Children’s toothbrush box recalled due to battery “danger of accidental ingestion”

play

A box containing a children’s electric toothbrush has been recalled due to a loose button battery, which authorities said could be “easily accessible to children and pose a risk of accidental ingestion.”

According to a recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), this recall affects the box in which the electric toothbrush was sold, not the Autobrush Sonic Pro Kids toothbrush itself.

According to the recall notice, the batteries at the center of the recall are not included in the toothbrushes. Instead, it is housed inside the box’s plastic packaging. The CPSC said the toothbrush boxes did not warn consumers that they contained button batteries, which is legally required under lease law.

“This is not a recall for the toothbrush itself,” Autobrush wrote on its recall page. “Your child’s Autobrush Sonic Pro Kids toothbrush is safe to use. This recall applies only to the box it came in.”

CPSC said no injuries related to the recall have been reported.

Which boxes are recalled?

According to the recall notice, the affected boxes were sold in four different varieties, each depicting a toothbrush sold as Unity the Unicorn, Lenny the Lion, Harley the Hippo and Danny the Dinosaur.

The toothbrushes were sold online at TryAutobrush.com from March 2023 to December 2025, according to the CPSC.

Consumers are asked to throw the box in the trash and fill out a form on Autobrush’s website to receive a $5 credit.

What is Reese’s Law?

The Leasing Act of 2022 requires the CPSC to establish standards for products containing button or coin cells, as well as requirements for warnings and child-resistant packaging.

According to the CPSC, the law requires products to have the following requirements:

  • Battery compartments containing replaceable button or coin batteries must be secured using a tool or in a manner that requires at least two independent and simultaneous hand movements.
  • Button or coin battery compartments shall not permit access to or release of such batteries as a result of use and abuse testing.
  • The entire product packaging must contain a warning.
  • If possible, warnings should be placed on the product itself.
  • The accompanying instructions and manuals must contain all applicable warnings.

Five bodies were recovered from the water on a Princess Cruises ship en route to Spain.

Crew members of the Sapphire Princess were en route to Cartagena on April 21 when they “spotted orange inflatable life jackets in the water,” the cruise line told USA TODAY. The ship departed Civitavecchia, Italy, on April 19 for a two-week cruise to Copenhagen, according to Cruise Mapper.

The ship changed course to investigate and a fast rescue boat was dispatched.

“The five deceased persons were recovered by the crew of the Sapphire Princess, working in collaboration with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC),” the company said in an emailed statement. The cruise line did not identify the individuals, but confirmed they were not guests or employees of the ship.

The cruise line added: “We offer our sincere condolences for this loss and thank the crew for their quick response and assistance.” MRCC could not be reached for comment.

The news comes after another Princess ship, the Regal Princess, rescued four people from a small ship in distress during a Caribbean cruise in February.

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5, and players can choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose Easy Pick/Quick Pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered 1-70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase your non-jackpot prize by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Thousands of dumbbells sold at Walmart have been recalled. See affected items

A New York-based electronics manufacturer is recalling thousands of dumbbells, but not because they’re too heavy.

TZUMI Electronics has announced a recall of approximately 50,000 FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5-52.5 pound adjustable dumbbells after multiple reports of weight plates dislodging during use, posing a risk of serious injury.

On April 23, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) announced a recall for certain model 8361 FitRx SmartBell adjustable dumbbells sold in the United States.

Here’s what you need to know about the recalled dumbbells.

Which products are affected?

The recall affects FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select adjustable dumbbells with serial numbers KK23288361 through KK23388361 and KK207608361 through KK21347836.

The dumbbells were sold in black with red accents and came with handles, removable weight plates, and a molded plastic storage tray. Users can adjust the weight from 5 lbs to 52.5 lbs in 2.5 lb or 5 lb increments by placing the dumbbells on the tray and turning the handle.

The model and serial number are located on the side of the storage tray. CSPC reports that “FitRx” is printed on both the tray and the dumbbell handle.

Why are dumbbells being recalled? Were any injuries reported?

During use, the weight plate can come loose from the handle and hit the user or bystanders, according to the CPSC.

There have been over 115 reports of weight plates coming off. The agency said at least six injuries were reported, including broken toes, bruises, contusions and lacerations.

Where were dumbbells sold?

The recalled dumbbells were sold for approximately $100 at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from January 2024 to November 2024.

What should consumers do now?

Customers should immediately stop using the recalled dumbbells and contact TZUMI Electronics for a free replacement dumbbell and tray.

Customers are instructed to use permanent marker or spray paint to write the word “Recall” across the dumbbell tray, register their product through the company’s recall website, and dispose of the product after registration is confirmed.

If you need help determining whether your product is included in the recall, please contact TZUMI Customer Service at 866-363-2237, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, or by email at smartbellrecall@tdome.com.

Caroline Leavitt is going on maternity leave. “I’m ready to have a baby anytime.”

  • Caroline Leavitt announced in December that she was expecting a baby girl in May.
  • On April 24, she said she was “ready to have a baby” and that this would be her last laugh with the press for a while.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt bid farewell to reporters on April 24 as she prepared to go on maternity leave.

“This will be my last grunt for the time being. As you can see,” she said, looking at herself. “I’m ready to have a baby, so I’ll see you soon.”

Leavitt, 28, announced just after Christmas that she was expecting her second child, a baby girl, in May. He also said he planned to meet with reporters at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25.

“I know you get along very well with my team here at the White House, and I know that all of you personally have the president’s phone number,” she joked. A report in The Atlantic last month revealed that President Donald Trump’s phone number was being traded among journalists, which Semaphore called “Washington’s worst-kept secret.”

When is Caroline Leavitt scheduled?

Levitt announced in an Instagram post that she is expecting a baby girl in May.

“I am also extremely grateful to President Trump and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for their support and fostering a family-friendly environment within the White House,” she said in a December post.

Levitt is one of President Trump’s most prominent advisers and the youngest White House press secretary ever. She worked as Trump’s campaign spokesperson and gave birth to her first child on July 10, 2024, during the campaign. She spoke about returning to work just four days after giving birth on “The Megyn Kelly Show” in February 2025, saying, “[The assassination attempt on July 13, 2024]allowed me to get back to work a lot sooner than I probably imagined.”

It’s unclear how long Levitt will be on leave, but she is expected to return to the podium, as she told reporters on April 24, “I’ll see you soon.” Until then, no one will be taking Leavitt’s place, but various administration officials will be at the podium to brief reporters. Politico reported that members of the Cabinet, Vice President J.D. Vance and even Trump himself could be included.

Youth ATVs recalled after child’s death

Approximately 5,000 youth ATVs are being recalled after a 6-year-old died in an accident while riding them.

This recall notice was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday, April 23rd.

This recall affects approximately 4,900 Rex110 and Sierra110 youth all-terrain vehicles. The vehicle was imported by Lil Pickup of Rowland Heights, California and manufactured in Vietnam.

According to the notice, the ATV did not meet the maximum speed limit for ATVs intended for children 6 years of age and older.

In addition, mechanical suspensions do not meet safety requirements and may cause the throttle to stick. All of the aforementioned issues can lead to a collision, increasing the risk of serious injury or death, the notice states.

The surfaces under your ATV’s feet can be hot, putting you at risk for severe burns.

Other than the death, no other incidents were reported.

What exactly are the ATV products being recalled?

ATVs were sold under two model names and multiple brand names.

According to the notice, the model name “Rex110” or “Sierra110” is written on the VIN plate on the front frame pillar.

ATVs can also be identified by the brand names “Seangles,” “MOTOTEC,” “OFFROAD MALL,” or “EXTREME” located on the side body and/or handlebar cover of the ATV.

A plate on the front frame column states, “This ATV is subject to a LIL PICK UP INC action plan approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

Where was the recalled ATV sold?

The ATV was sold online and in stores.

Retailers that sold the products include Cougar Cycle, Texas Star DBA Flying Scooter, Vitacci Motorcycles, ODES USA, BV Powersports, Tool Store Go-Kart Shop, Offroad Mall, and Triple J Imports.

ATV colors are black, blue, silver, green, orange, pink, burgundy, spider black, spider blue, spider red, green camo, purple camo, and pink camo.

The Rex110 ATV was sold from January 2023 to November 2025, and the Sierra110 ATV was sold from January 2024 to January 2026 for $600 to $800, the notice states.

What to do if you own a recalled ATV

Consumers are asked to stop using the product and contact Lil Pick Up for a refund. Consumers are encouraged to visit www.lilpickup.us to register for the recall. There, they will receive instructions on how to return the recalled vehicle.

Free ATV pickup and transportation will be provided.

The company can be contacted by phone at 951-245-5663 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday) or by email at contact@lilpickup.us.

Who died in the Louisiana Mall shooting? What you need to know

0

play

A 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder after another teenager was shot and killed this week at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, with bullets flying in the food court after a confrontation.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse said authorities announced April 24 that Markelle Lee was being held in a local jail on suspicion of murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. The charges stem from a shooting at a shopping mall where police say they captured an innocent bystander in the crossfire.

USA TODAY is working to identify an attorney to represent Lee or a family member who can speak on his behalf.

The Advocate reported that police identified the girl killed in the April 23 shooting as Martha Odom, 17, who was described as the successful captain of the soccer team, the editor of her school newspaper and a teacher at the dance school.

Three weeks before graduation, she went to the mall with friends for “Senior Skip Day,” the newspaper reported.

Among the other five people injured in the shooting, a 43-year-old man was in critical condition and underwent surgery Friday, Morse said.

Here’s what you need to know about Deadly Mall Melee.

Where did the shooting occur?

The shooting occurred inside the food court at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, about 16 miles southwest of downtown.

The mall is the largest in the state and is located just off Interstate 10 near Bluebonnet Boulevard, the city’s main thoroughfare.

What happened in the Louisiana Mall shooting?

Police announced on April 24 that detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Morse said this was “not a random act of violence, but a very targeted disagreement between two groups”.

“It appears that words were exchanged in front of some food vendors in the food court and then a gun was drawn,” Morse said. “When the gun was pulled and the shots rang out, unfortunately and very tragically, an innocent victim lost his life.”

Who died in the Louisiana shopping mall shooting?

17-year-old Martha Odom was killed in the shooting.

Morse would not say whether Martha was involved in the struggle that led to the shooting or was a bystander.

Who else was injured in the shopping mall shooting?

Five people were injured in the shooting, including a 43-year-old man who is currently fighting for his life. The other four people were treated for minor injuries.

Police said it was unclear at this time whether the injured were part of a group that fired shots at each other.

Who was arrested in the Louisiana mall shooting?

Police announced that 17-year-old Markelle Lee was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and weapons charges.

Morse previously told reporters that a total of five people were in custody and being questioned in connection with the shooting. On April 24, he said the remaining four people were considered persons of interest.

Morse also shared a photo of another suspect police are searching for.

White Castle introduces hot slider kiosks nationwide

0

White Castle has announced plans to roll out automated hot food kiosks nationwide that will serve the chain’s burgers, introducing its signature sliders beyond the freezer aisles of restaurants and grocery stores.

The Columbus, Ohio-based fast food chain announced Tuesday, April 21, that it has entered into an exclusive partnership with Automated Retail Technologies (ART) to launch White Castle Crave & Go kiosks across the United States. The expansion will start with 1,000 locations, according to a press release.

What is a White Castle Crave & Go Kiosk?

The kiosk is designed to allow customers to access Hot White Castle Slides in locations where traditional restaurants are not nearby, such as college campuses, hospitals, workplaces, and transportation hubs.

“This partnership provides consumers with a fun new way to experience White Castle,” White Castle Chief Marketing Officer Jamie Richardson said in a release. “Automated retail allows us to meet consumers when the craving arises, whether on campus, in the hospital or at the workplace, while delivering the warm, delicious quality that has defined our brand for more than 100 years.”

White Castle said the kiosk’s orders are prepared on-demand and are meant to give busy customers a quick and convenient way to get their food without having to wait in line.

Automated Retail Technologies operates the Just Baked platform and has already installed kiosks in high-traffic environments such as health systems, universities, corporate campuses, and transportation centers. White Castle said the existing network made ART a natural partner for the expansion.

“We are proud to partner with an iconic American company like White Castle,” Automated Retail Technologies founder David Chessler said in a release. “Together, we will make it easier for consumers to access authentic White Castle favorites, even in locations where traditional restaurants are not available.”

When will the White Castle Kiosk be available?

White Castle said initial Crave & Go installations have already begun and are generating positive feedback. The company expects expansion to accelerate throughout 2026 as more locations come online.

The company, founded in 1921, operates approximately 340 restaurants and also sells frozen sliders at retail stores nationwide.

Jeremiah Love move could cost Cardinals

0

Every draft class in the NFL has a way of quickly subverting long-held expectations.

All the rankings, projections, and mock drafts that fill the months-long pre-draft process tend to be forgotten as soon as the picks start rolling in. And when this year’s first round began on Thursday, April 23rd in Pittsburgh, it didn’t take long for the pre-draft stories to fizzle out as the order took shape.

Still, some moves left the team’s decision makers open to legitimate speculation.

With the first round complete, here are the five most questionable picks in the 2026 NFL Draft so far.

When rumors first started circulating this week that the Cardinals had their sights set on Love, it seemed like classic pre-draft misdirection.

How could a team that lacks any solutions in front of center or behind center manage to move forward with roster construction and acquire a top-level running back? Arizona has also expressed interest in a trade back, so perhaps the team was simply trying to garner interest in a deal that would put the front office in a better position to land an offensive tackle late in the standings.

There’s no smokescreen here. Now, teams that aren’t that far into the reset are finding themselves acquiring a ball carrier who enters the league as one of the highest-paid players at his position.

On the surface, this is bad business at an event where teams often seek out cost-controlled young talent for top positions.

But considering the Cardinals’ current offensive makeup, the decision becomes even more difficult to make. Yes, Arizona finished 31st in rushing last year and was unable to produce the explosive plays that Love is known for. But just as the Raiders’ woes with Ashton Giunty were compounded last year, a returning rookie has little control over fixing the ground game on his own. Some may tout Love as an all-around “offensive weapon,” but how much value can he add to an offense that’s already running through Trey McBride and bringing in Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson? And with Jacoby Brissett set to return as the starting quarterback, running room may be difficult to find.

Good thing Love got over the open field hurdle. Perhaps he will need it.

Being very good at love can make you a productive back. Still, no team in the top 10 may have been in a worse situation to get the most out of him. For an athlete suffering from malnutrition, this felt like a kind of dessert-first move.

When the Rams acquired this pick from the Falcons a year ago, it appeared to be the perfect opportunity for Sean McVay and Les Snead to secure Matthew Stafford’s successor. After that, the quarterback class was pretty much reduced to Fernando Mendoza. And in the process, Los Angeles confirmed its commitment to devoting resources to the reigning NFL MVP’s bid for another Super Bowl appearance.

Nevertheless, the Rams pulled the trigger on a passer many weren’t at all sure would make it past the first round.

In some ways, Simpson is a smart solution for a team that lacked a transition plan beyond center. The Alabama signal-caller has shown the clean footwork you’d expect from a coach’s son, and his lack of experience (15 starts) shouldn’t be much of an issue when he can sit and wait for a year or more.

But the fit here is still odd in many other ways. At 6-1 and 211 pounds with middling arm strength at best, Simpson has the profile of a physically limited offensive starter. Pursuing and accepting Stafford as the team’s triggerman was a direct effort to step outside the box.

Perhaps this will help the Rams avoid the rebuilding phase that many other candidates would have to endure. However, the Rams may feel like they hit a ceiling with Simpson soon after he took over, and the opportunity cost here was significant.

3. DT Caleb Banks, Minnesota Vikings (18th)

Equipping Brian Flores with a 6-6, 327-pound missile outside the line of scrimmage might seem like a surefire way for Minnesota’s defense to increase its chaos quotient. Ultimately, this move could go in the wrong direction.

When healthy and solid, Banks is arguably the most talented and disruptive defensive tackle in this class. He’s a deadweight that keeps any offensive tackle at bay, and he’s agile enough to put himself in position to finish plays in the backfield, rather than just running off course and finishing plays.

Part of the problem: He rarely actually does that, and missed tackles are a common problem. That’s just one aspect of the contradictions that have come to define Banks’ game. Due to his below-average hand usage and leverage, even less athletic opponents can neutralize him without much trouble. And having been sidelined for much of last year with two serious foot injuries, his ability to stay on the field will have a big impact on his professional future.

4. OT Kadin Proctor, Miami Dolphins (No. 12)

Miami’s new system literally hit the ground running with its first pick.

At 6-7, 352 pounds, Proctor is a true mountain blocker. When everything goes really well, he can annihilate opponents with both his run game and aerial attacks.

But this last season revealed what happens when it lapses. Proctor can easily go off-kilter and allow defenders to slip past him. His weight management has also been an issue during his career, with former Alabama coach Nick Saban raising eyebrows when he said before the draft that Proctor was “not really a self-starter.”

New general manager John-Eric Sullivan named left tackle Patrick Paul and center Aaron Brewer as two of the core members of the Dolphins’ rebuild this offseason. He may envision Proctor as a front third, but he’s far from a player reliable enough to earn that kind of recognition right away.

5. DT Peter Woods, Kansas City Chiefs (29th)

Take this as a vote of confidence in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to get the most out of a player who hasn’t quite reached his full potential yet.

Although drawing double teams and operating in an ability that wasn’t always in position to play, Woods showed sporadic signs of promise early in his Clemson career. As such, many have billed him as a potential top-five pick entering the 2025 race. Things then took a turn for the worse as Woods and the rest of the defense failed to make the strides many had expected.

Spagnuolo can double his strength with stunts, allowing him to utilize wood more effectively at the next level. But the Chiefs need a real difference-maker on their defensive line, and they seemed well-positioned to score one with either of their two first-round picks. Woods can’t clear that hurdle because of his short arms and lack of development as a pass rusher.

After the article was published, Patel filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic. Asked about the article at a press conference on April 21, Patel said, “I will never listen to the fake news mafia…When their voices get louder, that means I’m doing my job.”

“I never got drunk on the job, so I filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit,” Patel added.

Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, told CNBC that the magazine stands by its reporting.

Asked about Trump’s views on Patel, Levitt told reporters at the White House on April 24: “The president still has confidence in the FBI director and our law and order team, who have done a very good job over the past year and a half.” She noted that crime rates had decreased during Patel’s tenure.

The Atlantic article cited interviews with more than 20 anonymous sources who “described Mr. Patel’s tenure as a management failure and his personal actions as a national security vulnerability.” Officials expressed concern about “significant intoxication and unexplained absences.” According to the article, the FBI’s early morning meeting had to be rescheduled because of Patel’s “nights of alcohol intoxication” and “several times over the past year, members of his security detail had difficulty waking him because he appeared to be so intoxicated.”

Mr. Patel’s actions “often alarmed FBI and Justice Department officials,” The Atlantic reported.

After this article was published, Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Patel asking her to undergo an alcohol use disorder screening test and submit it to the committee.

The body of a doctoral student in the U.S. military in Japan is discovered, and his roommate is arrested.

Police said Zamir Limon’s body was found on a bridge in Tampa, and the search continues for Nahida Bristi, also a missing U.S. military student in Japan.

play

As the search for another missing student continues, police announced April 24 that authorities have found the body of a missing University of South Florida doctoral student and arrested his roommate on multiple charges.

Zamir Limon and Nahida S. Bristi, both 27, were last seen in the Tampa area on April 16, according to the University Police Department.

On April 24, Limon’s body was found on the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa and positively identified, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said at a news conference.

Earlier in the day, police arrested Limon’s roommate, Hisham Abugarbi, after barricading himself inside a house about a mile from the university, Maurer said. Abu Gharbi faces multiple charges including domestic violence, tampering with evidence and illegally storing or removing a corpse.

Maurer said authorities are “still actively searching” for Bristi, who lived on campus.

“I’m asking the community, if you have any tips… please report this to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office right away so we can bring her home to safety,” Maurer told reporters.

What we know about Zamir Limon and Nahida Bristi

According to the University of South Florida Police Department, a family friend reported Limon and Bristi missing just before 5 p.m. on April 17, when neither could be heard from. Both the U.S. Forces Japan Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office documented and processed missing person reports.

According to the USA TODAY Network’s Sarasota Herald Tribune, Limon was pursuing a degree in geography, environmental science and policy. Bristi is studying chemical engineering. Authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the two students.

On April 23, the sheriff’s office announced that the two were considered “endangered and endangered,” but did not provide further details.

Anyone with information on Bristi’s whereabouts is asked to call 813-974-2628.

Community tax review: service, pricing, and legitimacy

0

If you’re late in filing or paying your taxes, things can quickly escalate. Penalties and interest will begin to accrue, and in more serious cases, the IRS may pursue collection actions such as liens and levies. For many taxpayers, navigating this process alone may seem overwhelming.

Tax relief companies aim to intervene by examining your financial situation, identifying potential resolution options, and communicating with the IRS on your behalf. These companies handle the paperwork and negotiations associated with programs such as installment agreements and offers in compromise in exchange for a fee. However, not all providers offer the same level of service or transparency, so it’s important to compare your options carefully and be aware of any red flags.

In this review, we’ll take a closer look at local tax, including its services, pricing structure, and reputation, so you can decide if it’s right for your situation.

Community tax overview

  • Establishment:2010
  • Headquarters: Jacksonville, Florida
  • The client assisted with: 110,000+
  • debt resolution: 1.3 billion dollars
  • Service area: Nationwide
  • Services provided: Tax preparation and resolution services
  • expertise: Tax accountant, registered agent, certified public accountant, lawyer
  • better business bureau: A+ by BBB, 4.13 stars after 138 reviews
  • Trustpilot score: 4.4 stars after 831 reviews

Role of community tax

Community Tax helps individuals and businesses resolve tax issues with the IRS and state tax authorities. Its services span both tax preparation and tax resolution. This means that the company can not only help you file your returns, but also help you deal with your existing tax debts.

For new clients, the process typically begins with a free consultation. During this call, a representative will review your financial and tax situation and outline potential solutions. If you choose to proceed, the company will conduct a more detailed investigation and create a personalized plan based on your eligibility for specific IRS programs.

For federal tax matters, that plan may include:

  • Installment Agreement (IA): A payment plan that allows you to pay off your tax balance over an extended period of time (often over several months to multiple years). Once approved, most collection actions are paused.
  • Infringing Offer (OIC): A settlement option that allows you to resolve your tax debt for less than the full amount owed if you meet strict financial criteria.
  • Currently unavailable for collection (CNC): Temporary status that suspends collection activities due to financial hardship. Interest and penalties typically continue to accrue during this period.
  • Innocent Spouse Relief: Protects individuals who have joint tax liability due to a spouse or ex-spouse misreporting income or claiming inappropriate deductions.
  • Reduced penalties: We often request that certain IRS penalties be reduced or removed based on a reasonable cause or first relief standard.

Once a strategy is developed, Community Tax will liaise directly with the IRS or state authorities, manage the necessary documentation, and negotiate on your behalf. As your case progresses, you will receive updates throughout the process.

How community tax pricing works

Community Tax does not publish standard prices on its website. Costs vary depending on the case, including the complexity of your tax situation and the services required.

As with most tax relief companies, pricing is typically structured in tiers.

  • Initial consultation: During your toll-free call, a representative will review your situation and outline possible resolution options and estimated costs.
  • Investigation phase (flat fee): The company obtains your IRS records, examines your financial situation, and determines which programs (such as offers in compromise or installment agreements) you may qualify for.
  • Resolution stage (additional charge): If you proceed, Community Tax will complete the paperwork, file your application, and negotiate with the IRS on your behalf. The cost at this stage will vary depending on the services included.

Prices are not disclosed upfront, so you must request a quote to understand your total cost. Be sure to check the detailed breakdown of pricing, including what each tier includes and whether additional fees may apply.

After the case is resolved, Community Tax offers a $39 monthly subscription that includes ongoing support such as tax monitoring, preparation services, and identity theft assistance.

Advantages and potential disadvantages of community taxes

Here’s a breakdown of the main benefits and limitations to consider before taking advantage of community taxes.

Strong Points

  • High praise from customers: The company maintains an average rating of over 4.4 stars across hundreds of customer reviews on Trustpilot, suggesting an overall positive customer experience.
  • Scope of tax experts: Our staff includes registered agents, certified public accountants, and tax accountants to help us handle more complex cases.
  • Free initial consultation: You can discuss your situation and understand potential costs before using our services.
  • Ongoing support options: A CTAX+ subscription provides ongoing post-case monitoring, tax preparation support, and identity theft assistance.

Cons

  • Non-transparent pricing: Community Tax does not publish its fees online, making it difficult to compare costs with other providers in advance.
  • Costs can add up across phases. Fees are typically billed in stages (investigation and resolution), which can increase the total cost depending on the complexity of the case.
  • May not be necessary in simple cases: If your situation is simple, such as setting up a basic payment plan, you may be able to work directly with the IRS for free.

Community tax reviews and reputation

Community Tax is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) with an A+ rating and average customer score of 4.14 out of 5 stars based on over 100 reviews. On Trustpilot, the company has an average of 4.4 stars across hundreds of reviews.

Overall, customer feedback tends to be positive. Many reviewers highlight prompt customer service, clear communication, and successful results in resolving tax issues.

However, not all experiences are consistent. Some customers have reported concerns about pricing transparency or reported that the total cost was higher than expected. Others have noted that the results did not fully meet expectations, which can happen given that results ultimately depend on individual financial circumstances and IRS approval criteria.

Community Tax vs. Competitors

Many of the major tax relief companies offer similar services. However, prices and quality of service may vary from product to product. For example, here we compare Community Tax’s services and ratings to some of its top competitors, such as Anthem and Optima.

When it makes sense to work with a tax relief company

Working with a tax relief company can simplify a complex and stressful process. A firm like Community Tax can handle your correspondence with the IRS, prepare your paperwork, and help you identify the most viable resolution program based on your financial situation.

However, these services can cost thousands of dollars. Therefore, it usually makes the most sense to engage a tax relief company when the potential savings or relief outweighs the cost of the service.

You may benefit from professional help if:

  • Have a tax liability of $10,000 or more
  • Facing IRS collection actions such as wage garnishments, liens, and levies
  • I have multiple years of unfiled tax returns.
  • have a complex financial situation, such as self-employment income, fluctuating income, or significant hardship;

On the other hand, if your situation is relatively simple, such as setting up a basic payment plan, you may be able to work directly with the IRS for free.

conclusion

Community Tax is a reputable tax relief provider offering a full range of services to resolve your IRS and state tax issues. The company is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, with mostly positive customer feedback and a solid track record.

That said, prices are not disclosed in advance and costs can vary widely depending on the case. To receive a personalized quote, you must complete a free consultation.

Before moving forward, it’s a good idea to compare quotes from multiple tax relief companies to see exactly what services are included. This allows you to better understand your total costs and ensure you’re getting the right value for your situation.

Hegseth calls US-Iran war ‘a gift to the world’

0

play

For Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth, the U.S.-Iran war is a “gift to the world.”

Hegseth’s comments were made April 24 during a press conference at the Pentagon. Hegseth told reporters that the US blockade of Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is “ironclad” and will continue “as long as necessary” to accomplish America’s “bold and dangerous” mission to end Iran’s threat to global security.

“We are in control. Nothing is going in or out,” Hegseth said of the Iranian port blockade. He added that Iran is acting like a “pirate gang” that seizes ships from other countries.

Earlier this week, Iran seized two container ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which Hegseth said were small high-speed vessels equipped with AK-47s.

Hegseth’s remarks came as U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are scheduled to depart for Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 25 to resume talks with Iranian officials on a deal.

Hegseth suggests European and Asian countries are ‘free riding’

Hegseth also told a news conference that European and Asian countries were “free riding” by not supporting the United States in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

“We don’t rely on Europe, but they need the Strait of Hormuz more than we do, and they may want to have less conversations and fancy meetings in Europe and more boats,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth is referring to a recent multilateral planning conference led by the UK and France that explored ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. His comments echo those of Trump, who told European countries in March to “get our own oil!”

“You have to start learning how to fight for yourself. America is not there to help you anymore, just like you were not there for us,” Trump said in a March 31 Truth social post.

How effective was the lockdown?

The blockade, which went into effect on April 13, has forced 34 ships to turn back, according to Gen. Dan Cain, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In a new briefing at the Pentagon on Friday, Kaine explained how the U.S. military seized an Iranian-flagged vessel that ignored orders over the weekend. He said the breach led to the US military firing precision rounds into the ship’s engine room, effectively disabling it. U.S. Marines then boarded the ship by helicopter.

“The ship and its crew remain secure under U.S. control,” Kaine continued, adding that the blockade is tightening as more military assets move into the Persian Gulf region.

Despite the blockade, ship tracking data shows Iran is still able to transport some of its sanctioned oil, PBS News reported.

Lloyd’s List Intelligence, a maritime intelligence firm that provides real-time ship tracking, said there was a “steady flow of shadow convoy traffic” moving in and out of the Persian Gulf, including 11 tankers laden with Iranian cargo that have left the Gulf of Oman outside the Strait of Hormuz since April 13, the report said.

Inside the Pepsi commercial where Michael Jackson was burned

0

The new film Michael recreates the shocking moment the superstar’s hair caught fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

play

Spoiler alert! We are discussing major details about the plot of the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’.

Yes, Michael Jackson’s new movie will feature hits ranging from “ABC” to “Human Nature.”

But Michael (in theaters April 24) revisits one of the most traumatic chapters in the King of Pop’s life.

On January 27, 1984, the then 25-year-old superstar filmed a Pepsi commercial in front of an audience of 3,000 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Filming went smoothly until the sixth take, when he descended the stairs singing “Billie Jean.” Fireworks exploded behind him, showering the singer with sparks and setting his hair on fire.

As depicted in the film, he continued to perform for several seconds until the back of his head was engulfed in flames.

According to a BBC news article published at the time, Jackson’s brothers and crew members rushed to help, covering their flaming hair with jackets. He was wearing dazzling silver gloves when he was taken to the hospital.

Audiences reported that he remained calm throughout the freak accident, and some even thought it was part of the act.

“He was amazing,” fan Virginia Watson told the BBC. “Even as he was being carried away on a stretcher, he reassured people.”

Michael Jackson suffered severe burns and hair loss while filming a Pepsi commercial

Jackson was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and then transferred to the Burn Center at Brotman Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for second- and third-degree burns. He also suffered from severe alopecia.

According to a United Press International (UPI) article published at the time, he was discharged from the hospital just one day later, against doctors’ recommendations. He underwent outpatient treatment over the next few months, including surgery three months later to remove scar tissue from his scalp.

“We recommended that Michael stay, but we determined that this could be done just as well outside the hospital as inside,” Dr. Steve Heflin told reporters at Brotman Medical Center. “Despite our recommendations, he felt he wanted outpatient treatment.

“He seemed very happy,” Heflin said. “After a good night’s sleep, he is feeling better. He is in very good health and is showing signs of a very rapid recovery. We are very pleased that he did not have severe burns.”

Pat Lavalas, a nurse at Brotman Hospital, said Jackson received numerous phone calls, including well wishes from singers Teddy Pendergrass and Stephanie Mills.

“He left in good spirits and is in good condition,” Lavalas said, according to a UPI report. “He didn’t tell us about the accident. This morning he was watching ‘American Bandstand’ and people were getting autographs from him.

“He was singing Stephanie Mills songs in the bathroom,” she added. “He was lying in bed and opened the telegram, and he was furious to see a telegram from a fan that said, “I know you’re hot, but this is ridiculous.”

Was Michael Jackson’s alleged drug problem caused by the Pepsi incident?

As shown in “Michael,” Jackson settled with Pepsi for $1.5 million (about $4.9 million today, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). He donated all the money to Brotman and continued to visit patients long after treatment.

One month after the incident, on February 28, 1984, Jackson won eight Grammy Awards (the most in one night), including Album of the Year (Thriller) and Record of the Year (Beat It). That July, he embarked on a month-long national victory tour with his brothers.

Despite the tragedy, Pepsi commercials were still airing. Footage of the accident was obtained and published by Us Weekly in 2009.

Over the years, there have been various reports speculating about what went wrong during the fateful Pepsi shoot. The Los Angeles Fire Department chief told TMZ that he heard commercial director Bob Girardi telling Jackson to stay longer at the top of the stairs so the fireworks would “look more majestic.” As a result, he was directly under the shower of sparks when the fireworks exploded.

Capt. Don Donester told TMZ in 2009, “It looked like he came out of the smoke, which was completely against instructions and didn’t let us know about the change.” “I waited until he got to the bottom of the stairs and grabbed him around the waist and pulled him down.”

In an interview with TMZ, Girardi denied Donester’s claims.

Although media reports over the years have suggested that Jackson’s hair products made her hair more susceptible to burning, Donester told Access Hollywood in 2009 that Jackson’s heavy use of gel may have actually “slowed down the burning of her hair.”

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50 from acute propofol poisoning. In TMZ’s new documentary, Michael Jackson: 30 Fatal Seconds, Jackson family attorney Brian Panish claims the Pepsi incident was the catalyst for the pop star’s lifelong battle with drug abuse and self-esteem.

“I believe that the Pepsi commercial led to Michael’s serious downfall,” Panish said in the documentary. “He had extensive plastic surgery, skin grafts. They took skin from other parts of his body to repair the damaged areas. He was in severe pain, debilitating pain. He also had neuropathic pain, which is nerve pain in the scalp. The pain caused anxiety and, really most importantly, led to lack of sleep. The pain, the inability to sleep, made the pain even worse.”

“Patients shouldn’t be telling their doctors what medications to take,” Panish said. “Doctors should be held accountable. And in this case, I think Michael was responsible.”

Spirit Airlines may go bankrupt. Is now the time to fly?

0

Spirit Airlines’ deep discounts could be worthless if the airline suspends operations.

play

  • Spirit Airlines is facing serious financial troubles, and analysts are warning it may soon cease operations.
  • Travelers who book with Spirit face a high-risk, high-reward situation, with lower fares but the possibility of flight cancellation.
  • If an airline goes out of business, passengers could be stranded and face increased prices for last-minute flights on other airlines.

According to Google Flights, if you want to fly from Fort Lauderdale to New York next weekend, you’ll only need to pay $146 on Spirit Airlines, which is at least $100 cheaper than on other airlines. But this deal comes with a big potential downside.

Spirit Airlines is in serious financial trouble. Analysts have warned that the airline could be grounded in the next few days, with the government in Washington reportedly considering a bailout package that would allow the airline to continue operating.

“This is really uncharted territory because we’ve never seen anything like this happen on just one airline in the United States outside of COVID, outside of 9/11,” Katie Nastro, a travel expert at airline ticket trading site Going, told USA TODAY. “This is a very strange scenario that Spirit is currently in.”

For travelers, buying Spirit tickets now can be a high-risk, high-reward situation. You could end up getting an incredibly cheap vacation, or if the airline disbands while you’re on your trip, you could end up stranded and having to pay directly.

“If you can tolerate that risk, please do so. But personally, I’m not going to book a Spirit ticket right now until we know more. You’ll have better odds if you postpone your trip for a week,” Nastro said.

If you’re planning on using Spirit in the near future, here’s what you need to know.

What happens if you book a ticket and the airline goes bankrupt?

It may be a difficult time.

Airlines sometimes offer discounted “rescue fares” for passengers stranded when a competitor goes out of business, but they aren’t always cheap or easily available.

“I’m hesitant to say it’s going to be cheap flights,” Nastro said. “It’s certainly cheaper than the last-minute flight, but is it cheaper than a $49 Spirit flight? No, you’ll probably end up paying more than the entire round-trip Spirit flight.”

William J. McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, added that other airlines’ flights are likely already full with their own passengers, especially heading into the summer, and those airlines may not have enough seats anyway.

“The load factor is so high, how can airlines make up the slack here?” McGee said.

Make a reservation with a credit card

If you’re willing to take the risk, Nastro says you should always pay for your flight with a credit card. That’s because it’s the best way to protect your purchases if the airline goes bankrupt.

Before the airline’s limited remaining funds can be used to refund canceled flights, other creditors will be in line for repayment before the traveler.

“Please dispute the charges as there will be no service provided at that time as there is no seller,” Nastro said.

Still, McGee cautioned that even that process could be a gamble, as credit card issuers may not be required to issue refunds if a merchant goes bankrupt.

The Department of Transportation outlines the process for submitting a claim to your credit card company.

Additionally, travel insurance may not cover bankruptcy as a reason for a claim, so check your policy before relying on it.

It could also be a good opportunity to use your Free Spirit Points. Free Spirit Points can disappear if their value declines if the airline goes bankrupt or needs to be reorganized.

Know the alternatives

Nastro said if you’re booked on Spirit Airlines, it’s also a good idea to be aware of alternative flights and return home in case the airline goes out of business while you’re out. You might also consider booking a refundable ticket or one that allows you to use miles from another airline as a backup. Be sure to cancel your backup plan before boarding a Spirit flight.

See what President Trump had to say about the British royal family ahead of his scheduled visit

President Donald Trump praised and criticized British politicians in an interview with the BBC on Thursday, April 23, just days before King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s visit to the United States.

Charles, 77, and Camilla, 78, will be in the United States from April 27 to April 30 at President Trump’s invitation, during which they will attend a dinner at the White House, a private meeting with the president, and address Congress.

Britain’s Foreign Office told the BBC that the visit celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence and a partnership of “prosperity, security and a shared history,” and comes amid heightened tensions between Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over Starmer’s reluctance to get involved in the Iran war and refusal to allow the U.S. to launch attacks on British military bases, as previously reported by USA TODAY.

In a five-minute telephone interview with BBC reporter Sarah Smith, President Trump praised the king while making sarcastic remarks about the prime minister.

Here’s what President Trump said about the royal family and Britain:

President Trump praises King Charles as ‘amazing’

Asked if he thought the royal couple’s visit would help mend U.S.-UK relations, President Trump replied: “Absolutely.”

“He’s great,” President Trump said of Charles III. “He’s a great guy. Without a doubt, the answer is yes.”

The president added: “I know him very well and have known him for many years. He is a brave man, a great person. They will definitely be a plus.”

UK PM says immigration policy can ‘recover’

Asked about a post on Truth Social in which Trump criticized Starmer for appointing Sir Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to the US, the president said the prime minister still had time to “get back on his feet”.

“If we open up the North Sea and tighten our immigration policies, which we don’t currently have, we could bounce back, but otherwise I don’t think we have a chance,” he said.

Later on Thursday, Mr Keir told the BBC that he was making decisions “based on what is in Britain’s national interest, not what other people say or do”.

“That’s why I decided not to get involved in the Iran war,” Kiir continued. “I’m not going to be distracted or diverted from what other people say.”

US ‘doesn’t need’ aid, but UK should provide support to Iran

Speaking about Starmer and Iran, Trump stressed that the US “didn’t need” Britain’s aid, but that Britain “should have supported” the war effort.

“It wasn’t needed at all, but it should have been. It clearly wasn’t needed,” he said. “We wiped out the Iranian military. We didn’t need anyone.”

He described the request for help from allies as “rather a test” and said: “We wanted to see if our allies would get involved.”

He also defended his widely criticized threats against Iran, declaring in early April that “an entire civilization will perish tonight.”

“The other side wants a deal,” he told the BBC. “So no matter what I say or do, it seems to be working very well.”

threaten new tariffs

President Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Britain after ending the conversation by referring to a multibillion-dollar libel suit over the editing of the Panorama documentary and warning that the BBC must be “very careful” or risk “tarnishing” its reputation.

Later in the day, the president told reporters in the Oval Office that new tariffs would be imposed if Britain did not reduce the 2% digital services tax on big US technology companies.

“We’ve been looking at that, but the UK would do well to be careful because it could very easily be achieved by simply imposing large tariffs on the UK.”

dig prince harry

In the same Oval Office interview, Trump also slammed Prince Harry after reporters asked him whether it was “appropriate” for the royal family, like the Duke of Sussex, to urge the president to do more to end the war in Ukraine.

After paying tribute to Prince Harry’s wife Meghan, Trump responded: “Prince Harry does not speak for Britain, that’s for sure.” “I don’t think I speak for Britain more than Prince Harry, but I appreciate his advice.”

According to Reuters, Prince Harry visited Kiev, Ukraine, on April 23 and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. He also spoke of the obligation of U.S. leaders to do more to end the war.

“This is a moment for American leadership, a moment to demonstrate that the United States can abide by its international treaty obligations not out of charity but out of its own enduring role in global security and strategic stability,” he said, as reported by USA TODAY.

Rob Reiner’s son Jake opens up about his parents’ death in emotional essay

Jake Reiner, son of the late Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, has spoken out about his parents’ deaths in an emotional new essay.

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both of your parents at the same time, in an instant. It’s too devastating for you to comprehend,” Jake Reiner writes in his Substack essay “Mom and Dad,” published on Friday, April 24. “I still have to wake up every morning and tell myself, no, this is not a dream. This is truly a living nightmare for me.”

Rob Singer Reiner and Michelle Reiner shared Jake with son Nick Reiner, daughter Romy, and Rob Reiner’s adopted daughter Tracy Reiner.

The wife of the acclaimed director and producer of “The Princess Bride” was found dead in her Southern California home on December 14th. Days later, prosecutors filed criminal charges against the son, Nick Reiner, for allegedly “stabbing” his parents.

“So much was taken from me that day,” Jake Reiner wrote. “My parents won’t be at my wedding, they won’t be able to hold my future grandchildren, and they won’t be able to see me building the successful career that I still desire. That breaks my heart and infuriates me.”

Jake Reiner also opened up about the moment he learned of his parents’ death.

“On the afternoon of December 14, I was at Union Station to attend a celebration of the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October. Then my sister, Romy, called me and told me that my father had passed away. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me that my mother had also passed away.”

Jake Reiner says his parents didn’t deserve to be killed

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced at a press conference on December 16 that Jake Reiner’s brother, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstances of multiple murders of his parents.

The 32-year-old screenwriter also faces a special charge of using a dangerous and deadly weapon – a knife – in the couple’s murder. In the special circumstances of multiple murders, a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty may apply.

“I can’t even walk in my parents’ shoes, but what I’m always reminded of is how scared they must have been,” Jake Reiner wrote on Substack.

“They were the last people in the world who deserved what happened to them. They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and most of all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”

He added: “They should have been able to enjoy the rest of their lives in peace, growing old together. Instead, that was taken away from them, me and Romy. There was nothing we could do about it.”

Jake Reiner pays tribute to ‘hero’ Rob Reiner and ‘best friend’ Michelle Singer Reiner

Jake Reiner reflected on his loving relationship with his parents in an essay for Substack, calling his father Rob Reiner a “hero.”

“In public, my father was the same beautiful person he was at home,” Jake Reiner wrote. “He was sincere and passionate, and his sense of humor was always my sense of humor.”

He added that his father “supported everything I wanted to do in life,” including his decision to pursue an acting career.

“When I transitioned from broadcasting to acting, I was nervous because I didn’t know how he would react,” Reiner recalls. “I think I should have known, because all he wanted was for me to be happy and love what I do. I wish he and I could have worked on the project together from start to finish.”

Jake Reiner said of his mother that Michelle Singer Reiner is his “best friend” and “the heart of our entire family.”

“She planned Thanksgiving every year, complained every year that it was too hard, vowed never to host it again, and then promptly hosted it the following year,” he wrote. “She was the one who planned all the trips we took as a family, and they were always perfectly planned. She had a passion for life that most people would like to achieve.”

Jake Reiner also reflected on the various outings he took with his parents during his childhood, such as playing baseball games with his father and going to see Broadway musicals with his mother.

Jake Reiner wrote, “I never forget that my parents gave me an amazing experience that most people never get to experience.” “But I would trade a Dodger game, a Broadway show, a vacation for just one more hour to talk to them and say goodbye.”

Jake Reiner speaks candidly about his ‘horrifying’ grief over the death of his parents

Jake Reiner also opened up about the emotional aftermath of his parents’ deaths.

“Every day since then has been horrible,” Jake Reiner wrote. “Every meeting we attend, every person we speak to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to the murder of our parents.

“In the midst of trying to process the most traumatic moments of our lives, the world demands meetings, paperwork, decisions, and explanations, as if documentation is necessary before mourning.”

In February, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to the murder charges brought against him. His next hearing is scheduled for April 29.

“We lost more than half our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake Reiner wrote. “Losing a parent is devastating, sure, but nothing compares to losing both of your parents at the same time, and having a younger brother at the center of it all. It’s almost impossible to process.”

Jake Reiner also asked the public for “love and compassion” as his family navigates the coming months.

“I understand that people have questions about what happened, and some of those answers will come in time,” Reiner concluded. “But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of what was taken from us.”

How to get rid of fire ants

0

Fire ants are aggressive pests that can sting you multiple times if you enter their territory. Unfortunately, for many homeowners who live in warm, humid areas, that area may be their backyard.

According to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC), these little buggers were only introduced to the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. They are now considered an invasive species, plaguing areas from Virginia to New Mexico and even California and Puerto Rico.

Do you need to get rid of fire ants? Here’s how pest control experts say you should.

How can I get rid of fire ants quickly?

The quickest way to get rid of fire ants is to apply liquid mound drench insecticide or use a fast-acting granular bait. DIY ways to remove them without using chemicals include pouring a solution of hot water or dish soap over the pile. These techniques can kill the mound and surrounding ants, but may not be enough to eradicate the entire colony.

“If you don’t address your fire ant problem early, they can quickly establish multiple colonies on your property,” says Rick Culbreth Jr., a third-generation exterminator and president of Yates Astro Termination and Pest Control, a family-owned company in Savannah, Georgia.

How to identify fire ants

Fire ants are reddish-brown in color and measure 2 to 6 millimeters, or the size of a pencil tip to a pencil eraser.

Their reddish coloration is one of their distinguishing features, but perhaps the most obvious indicator is their behavior. If you brush a fire ant mound, they will swarm and bite you.

Where are fire ants usually found?

“Fire ants prefer sunny, open areas where the soil is moist and they tend to form mounds,” Culbreth says. Colonies of fire ants may be found on lawns, spread out in fields, in garden flower beds, under playgrounds, and hidden in crawl spaces.

It thrives in warm, moist areas where moisture is present, as the soil allows it to tunnel more easily. Warmer, moist soil maintains proper temperatures within the colony for the queen and larvae.

“Fire ants emerge during the warmer months of spring and beyond, when temperatures rise and create ideal conditions for colony growth and expansion,” Culbreath said. This means that fire ant activity begins to increase from April to May.

What do fire ant mounds look like?

Fire ant mounds look like small, fluffy mounds of dirt. There is no visible hole at the top like other types of anthills. On the lawn, the mound may look like a bald spot without grass.

Comparison of fire ant extermination methods

Because fire ants are so widespread, the goal is to control them, not necessarily eradicate them.

The most effective fire ant treatments are multifaceted, targeting individual mounds and applying treatments more broadly. For example, pour mound treatment on all visible mounds, but you can also use bait traps to kill queens.

bait trap

Fire ant bait traps use slow- or fast-acting insecticides that foraging ants carry back to the colony and queen. Although this treatment is designed to treat an entire area, it can provide significant fire ant control when applied correctly.

Mound processing

Individual mound treatments are an effective way to target backyard fire ant infestations because they are more labor intensive and likely to use more insecticide than other approaches. Mound treatments can kill fire ant colonies in just a few hours, making them a quick solution for homeowners.

The downside to mound treatments is that the insecticide only kills the ants it touches, so it’s best done with a more extensive bait station treatment.

DIY method

Common DIY fire ant control methods include pouring a solution of hot water, vinegar, or dish soap over the mound. These non-chemical solutions are suitable and effective for small scale infestations. However, if you have multiple mounds, that may not be enough.

Fire Ant Safety Tips

If you notice signs of fire ants in your garden, take note. These ants sting when the mound is disturbed.

  • Find out what fire ants and their mounds look like
  • Do not disturb known fire anthills
  • When moving brush, wood, and other debris, be aware that fire ants may be underneath
  • Wear protective footwear and clothing
  • Handle pesticides carefully and apply according to instructions
  • Keep a first aid kit handy

If you get stung, wash your skin with soap and water, apply ice or a cold cloth, and consider using an over-the-counter antihistamine. Some people have severe allergic reactions to fire ant stings, so seek medical attention if necessary.

How to prevent fire ants

The best way to keep fire ants at bay is to keep your garden clean, and NPIC says you should:

  • Empty the trash regularly
  • Don’t leave trash in the garden
  • Put away dog and cat food
  • Spray insecticides on individual mounds or use treatments throughout the garden
  • For uncontrollable pest infestations, contact a professional pest control company.

“The best thing to do is to keep your yard and crawl space clean and maintained,” Culbreth says. Be sure to manage any potential fire ant habitat, such as vegetation, mulch, and wooden stakes.

Professional and DIY fire ant removal

If you only have one mound, you may be able to manage the colony with DIY fire ant control methods. But if you have a large-scale infestation without your knowledge, or if you fail to remove the queen, your fire ant problem can quickly get out of hand.

“Professional treatment is recommended for these pests, as DIY treatments often only partially resolve the problem,” Culbreth says. “Hiring an expert on fire ant problems can help the entire colony, including the queen, to prevent further infestation.”
