Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi faces misdemeanor charges for allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that caused “significant” damage to a parked car in Northern California, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Pelosi, 86, is suspected of crashing into a parked car before driving off July 3 in Yountville, about 80 miles north of San Francisco, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement to multiple media outlets. Officials said the parked car was unoccupied and no one was injured in the incident.

A witness called 911 and told authorities the driver had struck a parked car, stopped and left the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies later found Pelosi’s brown convertible nearby with damage to the front right side, consistent with damage found on the parked car.

Pelosi told lawmakers she knew she had hit something but didn’t know what it was and continued driving until her car became disabled, a statement from law enforcement said. Pelosi had no alcohol in her system and was not arrested at the scene, the sheriff’s office added, noting that such incidents are typically treated as misdemeanors.

The sheriff’s office said it recommended a misdemeanor charge of fleeing the scene of an accident with property damage. The case was referred to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Authorities also referred the case to the Department of Transportation for evaluation to determine whether Pelosi should be allowed to continue driving, a process that is “common for older drivers,” the sheriff’s office said.

In a statement to CBS News and the California Post, a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said, “Paul Pelosi personally apologized to the owner of the car and assured them that she would take responsibility for any damage to the car. Speaker Pelosi will not comment further on this personal matter.”

Paul Pelosi previously made headlines after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge stemming from a crash in Napa County in 2022. He was sentenced to probation, ordered to complete a DUI program and pay fines and restitution.

That same year, an intruder broke into Pelosi’s home and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer, fracturing his skull. The attack attracted national attention and became a major political flashpoint, raising concerns for the safety of elected officials and their families. Pelosi later underwent surgery and is recovering from her injuries.

The perpetrator, David Wayne DePaap, was later prosecuted and sentenced to life in prison.
