WASHINGTON – Democrat Adelita Grialba won a special election in Arizona, filling the seats in the US vacant US home by her late father, Raul Grialba, The New York Times and NBC News.

Adelita Grijalva, a former member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, defeated Daniel Butierez, a registered contractor and a Republican opponent. She currently represents Arizona’s Deep Blue Seventh Congressional District, covering part of Tucson, Arizona.

Her victory means Democrats currently hold 214 seats in the house while Republicans control 219 seats. House Speaker Mike Johnson had already faced difficulties getting the law across the finish line with a majority of the razor-thin GOPs. He can afford to lose two Republican votes on a particular bill if all Democrats oppose it.

Raúl Grijalva passed away on March 77 after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2024. He is one of three House Democrats who have died since the start of the 119th Congress in January. Two others are Sylvestar Turner of Texas and Rep. Gerald Connolly of Virginia.

Adelita Grijalva, 54, launched a parliamentary campaign in March. She came to the top of the Primary on July 15th, beating a handful of fellow Democrats for the nominations, including top competitors Deja Foxx and Daniel Hernandez.

Adelita Grijalva told Politico that she supports bipartisan efforts to force the publication of files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
