“I think I’ve done it before,” Diaz told reporters about cockfighting in his native Puerto Rico. I’m concentrated to be back and ready as soon as possible. So I don’t think about it too much.”

Diaz’s first public comment on the issue was since USA TODAY Sports published an article about his public involvement and extensive activities. He made them while responding to a question after his first rehab stint.

Do you want to continue your involvement in cockfighting?

Edwin Díaz will be among the 40 participants in the cockfighting tournament to be held on Friday, July 17 at Club Galistico in Puerto Rico, according to a photo posted on the club’s Facebook page. Attempts to reach the Club Gallistico to confirm the Edwin Diaz listed is the pitcher were unsuccessful.

Edwin Díaz’s name has been listed as a participant in the tournament for Puerto Rico’s Club Galistico no fewer than six times since the Dodgers closer went on injured reserve on April 20.

A Dodgers spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports that Diaz will not answer questions from USA TODAY Sports because he is busy preparing for his return.

Diaz underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove bone and cartilage debris from his right elbow in April and is scheduled to return after the All-Star break in July.
