Kamala Harris says she won’t run for California governor
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she will not run for governor of California, but has not ruled out running for president again.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris held a private phone call with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, according to a new report.
An article published by Axios said the two men spoke by phone just days after the mayor’s parliamentary support won the primary election, a possible sign of Mamdani’s growing power in politics.
Here’s what you need to know about the report:
Mamdani meets with Harris after gaining support
Last week, three Mamdani-backed candidates, two of them DSA members, won big victories in parliamentary primaries. Darializa Avila Chevalier joined Claire Valdez and Brad Lander in defeating Establishment Democrats in their respective districts, with both Lander and Avila Chevalier defeating incumbents.
The victory was a shocking blow to many Establishment Democrats in the party, some of whom were disappointed by the mayor’s decision to support him.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who endorsed Mamdani during her own campaign, said of the mayor on CNN: “We all have some frustration with the Democratic Party, but we don’t let it explode. That’s what MAGA did.”
According to reports, the former vice president called Mamdani on Thursday after Tuesday’s victory.
Axios claimed the two sides talked about the future of the Democratic Party and planned to speak again soon.
It is not immediately clear how constant communication between pairs is. The newspaper reported that the two had been exchanging text messages over the past few months and that the call could hint at a further presidential run for Harris.
Mamdani’s office and Harris’ team did not immediately respond to USA TODAY Network’s requests for comment.
