Rosie O’Donnell has spoken of the “painful” experience of visiting her daughter in prison.

The 64-year-old comedian wrote a poem for Substack on June 12 titled “Before and After,” about visiting his daughter Chelsea O’Donnell in prison. The 28-year-old was sentenced to prison last year for violating the terms of her probation following a series of arrests.

“I’m going to visit her soon,” O’Donnell wrote in the poem. “I’ve been trying to prepare myself. I know it’s difficult, but I have to do it because she told me to do it. It’s a first for her at 28 years old. I can do difficult things, and so can she.”

O’Donnell said she told her daughter she might cry when she saw her in a prison uniform, but Chelsea replied, “Why, mom, it’s not bad here, but now I have friends.” During the visit, the comedian said his heart skipped a beat when Chelsea looked “healthy” and “calm.” The two reportedly hugged each other “tightly.”

“When tears fall from my eyes, I splash cold water on my face,” she wrote. “I’m trying to shake off the sadness. It’s hard enough for her… She turns 29 this summer. And when I look at her, all I see is a blonde baby in diapers.”

The former talk show host went on to write that her daughter calls her every day to say she’s “somehow not in pain.” “We have grown even closer through this tense time, and I am grateful for that,” she wrote. “That she’s alive. She’s looking forward to her release. She’s planning her post-prison journey. She’s not using drugs.”

Although the visit to the prison was interrupted by a nearby tornado, O’Donnell concluded that it was a “big day” for the couple and an example of the “unconditional love” between a mother and daughter. On Instagram, she shared a poem along with a photo taken with her daughter.

Chelsea O’Donnell, who Rosie lives with ex-wife Kelly Carpenter, was arrested three times in 2024 on charges including maintaining an alleged “drug den”, child neglect, domestic abuse, possession of methamphetamine, THC, drug paraphernalia and illegally obtained prescriptions. After her daughter’s third arrest, Rosie posted on Instagram that Chelsea was “facing numerous charges related to her drug addiction.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Chelsea O’Donnell later pled guilty to jumping bail, possessing methamphetamine, and resisting or obstructing a police officer.

Rosie O’Donnell shared a childhood photo of Chelsea on Instagram last year, writing that it showed her “before addiction took over her life.” He added: “I loved her and I still love her now as she faces a terrifying future. Prayers are greatly appreciated.”

Chelsea has four children, but according to Rosie’s poem, they haven’t visited her in prison, “and I know that makes her sad.”
