President Trump said the peace deal between the United States and Iran is “done.” What you need to know

Date:

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is done,” President Donald Trump said in a social media post. “Congratulations, everyone!”

President Donald Trump and Iranian officials announced they have reached a deal to end the Iran war, with a formal signing ceremony scheduled for later this week.

President Trump suggested the deal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting the blockade of Iranian ports, but additional details were not immediately disclosed.

“The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is complete,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social on June 14. “Congratulations, everyone! I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and at the same time authorize the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade.”

When USA TODAY asked for more information about the deal, the White House pointed to President Trump’s social media statements.

The president later announced on social media that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on June 19, the day the US-Iran deal is scheduled to be signed.

“With Friday’s deal, the opening of the Strait will once again have oil flowing from both ends for the purpose of demining, for the benefit of our region and the world!” Trump said in the post.

The Iran war has become a domestic political liability for President Trump and Republicans in Congress, and polls show Americans are deeply dissatisfied with rising gas prices ahead of November’s midterm elections. But Trump is also facing pressure from members of his own party who say Iran’s nuclear program should be halted completely.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister announces peace agreement with US

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Ghalibabadi told Iranian state television that military operations on various fronts, including Lebanon, would cease, confirming an immediate and permanent end to the war.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is mediating the peace talks, said a formal signing ceremony to conclude the deal would be held in Switzerland on June 19.

“I am pleased to announce that after intensive consultations, a peace agreement has been reached between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Sharif said on social media. “Both sides declared an immediate and permanent suspension of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

In addition to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the Trump administration has previously said the memorandum commits Iran to further talks on eliminating its nuclear program over the next 60 days.

Ghalibabadi told Iranian state television that negotiators would work for 60 days to reach a final agreement, adding that the Iranian government would take its own measures in case of “violations by the other side.”

The United States and Israel began the Iran war on February 28th. Thousands of people died in the conflict, including 13 American soldiers. Although the two countries agreed to a ceasefire in April, Tehran continues to restrict the strait, disrupting the global economy and driving up oil prices.

In response to President Trump’s push for a permanent peace agreement, the United States blocked Iranian ports.
