As negotiations progress and tensions rise, President Trump presses for a war deal with Iran
President Donald Trump has signaled progress in Iran war negotiations, while warning of a recurrence of conflict and urging regional countries to join the Abraham Accords.
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will convene his entire Cabinet at the Camp David Presidential Retreat on Wednesday, May 26, as renewed U.S. attacks on Iran threaten to upend peace deal negotiations.
The unusual meeting, confirmed by administration officials, at Maryland’s Camp David facility came amid threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps to retaliate after U.S. Central Command announced defensive strikes on ships attempting to lay mines and missile launch sites in southern Iran.
Escalating tensions risk derailing President Trump’s efforts to secure a deal with Iran that would end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for trade between the United States and Iran. President Trump faces increasing pressure to secure a deal after both sides indicated they were close to a deal.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters hours after the airstrike that Trump was “either going to get a good deal or no deal” and that it could take “a few more days” for negotiators to reach a deal.
Iran is expected to take the lead in the Camp David talks, but the official said ministers will also discuss the economy and anti-corruption efforts, among other administration priorities.
President Trump has held 12 cabinet meetings so far in his second term, but Wednesday will be the first at Camp David, built in 1938 for former presidents to engage in diplomacy with foreign leaders. Representatives from other countries are not scheduled to attend.
President Trump’s Cabinet meetings are typically long sessions in which Trump’s top aides take turns praising the president. Tulsi Gabbard, who announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence on May 22, is also expected to attend the Camp David meeting. Gabbard’s retirement is effective June 30th.
The conference is holding off on possible weather restrictions as rain continues to fall in the Washington, D.C., area. President Trump typically takes Marine One on trips to Camp David.
President Trump’s Camp David rally will be his second visit to a retreat during his second term. President Trump met with military leaders at Camp David in June 2025, following anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.
