- GM intends to sell Buick Envision vehicles assembled in the United States to the North American market, the company confirmed.
- This means production may continue in China for sale to markets outside the United States.
General Motors plans to transfer production of the next-generation Buick Envision produced in China to the United States in 2028, the latest reorganization of the company’s vehicle assembly under auto import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The Detroit automaker confirmed on January 22 that it plans to produce the compact SUV on land at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas. GM has been manufacturing the Buick Envision in China for the North American market since 2017.
Fairfax Assembly currently builds the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt, but will produce it in limited quantities. The plant is scheduled to begin producing the Chevrolet Equinox equipped with a gasoline engine in 2027. Once Envision is added, it will become a shared platform with Equinox.
“This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on the $5.5 billion in new investments we announced across our U.S. manufacturing footprint last year,” GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in an emailed statement.

This is the latest change for GM after President Trump’s second term saw production plans disrupted by regulatory changes and lower-than-expected consumer demand for electric vehicles.
Meanwhile, Buick Envision production in China will not be interrupted, and GM will continue to ship Envisions from China to the United States. GM said additional product and timing details for the new Buick will be shared closer to launch. GM sold 41,924 Buick Envisions in 2025.
