On September 30th, a major federal tax credit aimed at encouraging buyers to choose EVs over gas-powered vehicles is set to expire.
According to CARS.COM, 70% of electric car shoppers are aware of the tax credits as consumers can continue to cash out the $7,500 tax credits for the new EVS and the $4,000 tax credits for used cars.
Coupled with growing awareness, 78% of EV and plug-in hybrid shoppers say credits play a major or contributing role in their decision to earn electricity, while 47% of shoppers say expiry tax credits can accelerate their timeline.
That urgency is manifesting in the Cars.com market, respectively, with demand for new EVs and EVS increasing by 33% and 22%, respectively.
“The federal government EV tax credits helped make EVs more affordable. The expiration at the end of September could slow demand in the short term, but it doesn’t mean the end of an affordable EV.”
Cars.com has released a list of top electric vehicles to buy before the federal tax credit ends next week, taking into account range, affordability, family-friendly and technological innovation.

Despite the federal incentives that end next week, “The deal will not go away. Many state and local incentives remain, and automakers like Nissan, Chevrolet and Hyundai are already unveiling new, low-cost models,” Bragman said.
