Consumers who fear retail returns will soon have a new option.

Uber Eats has launched a new returns feature that allows consumers to return purchases from certain retailers on the app and receive a refund, the company confirmed to USA TODAY on Friday, April 17th.

“In a first for the on-demand delivery industry, customers will now be able to return eligible retail items purchased on Uber Eats for an instant refund. Simply request a return in the Uber Eats app and a courier will come to pick up your item for a fee,” Uber said in an announcement.

This feature is now also available in the app.

How Uber Eats returns work

To make a return through the Uber Eats app, customers can go to their order history and select the “Return Item” option. Next, select the items you want to return and tell Uber Eats why you want to return them. As long as the item is eligible and meets the retailer’s return policy, consumers can tap Return with Courier to complete the process.

Uber Eats will immediately process the refund once the courier receives the item, the company said.

How much does it cost?

Uber Eats says delivery returns are only available for purchases of $20 or more and are subject to the store’s in-app return policy. Refunds include the item price, applicable taxes, and Uber Eats service fees.

Return fees charged to consumers are calculated based on courier time and distance.

Delivery fees and tips are non-refundable, Uber said in a statement.

Which retailers allow returns through Uber Eats?

At initial launch, the feature will apply to retailers on the app, including Petco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Best Buy, Uber Eats said. The company said it plans to add more retail partners in the future.

Uber Eats also has a “send item” feature

According to a spokesperson, Uber Eats also has Uber Courier’s “Send Items” feature, which allows customers to pick up up to five prepaid, sealed packages at a time from a courier and drop them off at a local post office, UPS, or FedEx location. Uber says the feature was first introduced in 2023.
