Less than a year after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Big Lots announced plans to secure yet another partner in its comeback campaign and close hundreds of stores.

In the September 2024 bankruptcy filing, several companies have bought closed locations, with one of the latest buyers being tractor supply for rural lifestyle retailers.

The discount retailer sold the lease to Boston-based asset liquidation company Gordon Brothers Retail Partners in late 2024 to more than 460 stores, at which point the building was on sale. More than 200 locations have been acquired by variety wholesalers as part of a deal that began reopening in April.

The company resumed its first wave of nine locations on April 10, with plans to announce a second wave of 55 stores on May 1, and announcing a further 70 stores on May 15. Another round will follow in June.

Tractor Supply confirmed with USA Today that it purchased 18 big lot leases in 15 states, as Penn Live first reported.

“These locations are strategically located in existing and adjacent commercial areas to provide an ideal footprint, favourable lease terms for functionality, and to meet the essential needs of farmers, livestock and pet owners, ranchers, part-time and hobby farmers, gardeners, homeowners, merchants and more.

Other retailers buy big lot locations

Apart from the supply of tractors, other retailers have announced the purchase of large lot locations. The variety wholesaler has acquired 219 big lot stores and two distribution centers, but Rhode Island-based Ocean Statelot announced in March that it will purchase 15 big lots in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.

Earlier in February, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet said it would buy 40 previous big lot stores. Burlington Stores, Inc. has also acquired 12 big lot locations in eight states.
