Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress after decades in office.
Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with hit-and-run after he allegedly crashed into a parked car in California’s Napa Valley.
On July 17, Napa County District Attorney Alison Haley announced charges against Paul Pelosi, 86, for the July 3 incident. Prosecutors accuse him of crashing an unoccupied parked car before leaving the scene in Yountville, about 80 miles north of San Francisco. Paul Pelosi also faces a violation for making an illegal turn.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office previously announced that no one was injured in the incident. Witnesses called 911 and told authorities the driver struck a parked car, stopped briefly, and then left the scene, the sheriff’s office said in a statement to multiple media outlets. Sheriff’s deputies then found Pelosi’s brown convertible nearby with damage to the front right side, consistent with damage found on the parked car.
Paul Pelosi told deputies he knew he had hit something, but didn’t know what it was, the sheriff’s office said. He continued to drive until the car was no longer drivable.
The sheriff’s office said Pelosi had no alcohol in his system at the time and was not arrested at the scene, which officials said is common in misdemeanor cases like this. The sheriff’s office said it referred the case to the state Department of Transportation to evaluate whether Paul Pelosi should be allowed to continue driving, officials said, adding that this is a common process for older drivers.
Court records did not list an attorney for Paul Pelosi, a wealthy businessman who runs a San Francisco-based venture capital firm. A spokeswoman for Nancy Pelosi’s congressional office declined to comment. The sheriff’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
A Pelosi family spokesperson previously told news outlets: “Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the car’s owner and assured him that she will take responsibility for the damage to the car. Speaker Pelosi will not comment further on this personal matter.”
Paul Pelosi’s court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 14, records show.
In 2022, Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of DUI causing death stemming from a crash in Napa County. His sentence included a three-year suspended sentence and five days in jail, and he was ordered to complete a drink-driving program as well as pay a fine and restitution.
Later that year, an intruder broke into Pelosi’s San Francisco home and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer, fracturing his skull. His attacker, David Wayne DePaap, was sentenced to life in prison for the assault. The attack highlighted violence against elected officials and their families.
