MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — There’s only one Kylian Mbappé, but the French superstar is now on his own at the World Cup.
On Saturday against England at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, Mbappe dug his heel into the pitch and fired a sweet ball into the net. This goal in the 48th minute cut France’s lead to 4-1. It also tied Mbappé and Lionel Messi for the most goals in World Cup history.
And Mbappe, being Mbappe, literally broke the score and record by scoring his second goal in the 66th minute. His second goal was his 10th of the tournament and 22nd of his career in a World Cup match. With his two goals against England, he surpassed Messi for the most goals in World Cup history (22).
Furthermore, Mbappe’s teammate Mikael Oliseh, who assisted on both of his goals, overtook Pele with seven assists for the most assists in a single competition.
If Mbappé and France can come back and beat England, they will earn $29 million and a bronze medal for their efforts. France’s victory could affect the country’s world rankings and the qualifying draw for the 2030 World Cup.
