If you don’t fix it, leave people alone

Maybe you love the smell of fresh school supplies. Maybe you’re calling your target “tar-jay.” Maybe you’re still looking at “Grey’s Anatomy.”

We all have habits. And the recent Virus Tiktoc encourages people to fly their extraordinary flags.

“Do you know what’s underrated? Leave people to you,” a Tiktok user captioned the video with over 11 million views. “Excite them with words incorrectly, talk too much about shows they love, or don’t understand. You don’t need to get it, you’re just kind.

And experts generally agree. “Even when you’re making people shine and talking about things that aren’t about you, you’re using validation through active listening and taking a non-judgmental attitude about what someone else is saying,” says clinical psychologist Regine Galanti. “Positive and validation are great skills that we use to support others and build self-esteem and self-worth.”

But if something really bothers you – as they say “H” of herbs – and you have no choice but to yak someone’s yum. For example, someone’s mispronunciation may have more to do with innocent ignorance, as opposed to mistakes worth correcting.

“Based on a cultural background, some people may not know how to pronounce words. I think it’s perfectly appropriate to misinterpret words depending on the context you’re sharing on social media.”

“Consider whether the correction will help the other party’s interests.”

Everyone loves verification. And that is the spirit behind this Tiktok message. “Psychologically, validation is the act of recognizing someone else’s thoughts, experiences, or feelings,” adds Garanti. “Validation increases individual emotional regulation and improves relationships. It helps them feel they’ve heard of it.”

People lighten up when the conversation snakes into the wheelhouse. “They are simply sharing their own opinions about their hearts and what they are passionate about,” Chapman added, “they aren’t necessarily looking for other people’s opinions to revise them about the content they’re sharing.”

Of course, verifying someone doesn’t mean you need to agree with them. School supplies smell bad, or you might think “Grey’s Anatomy” is the worst show ever. That doesn’t mean that you need to say it all to a poetic person.

Brad Fulton, an associate professor of management and social policy at Indiana University Bloomington, proves that the conversation is false when dealing with misconceptions, saying it “relies heavily on context, relationships and motivation.”

As they keep saying that their boss’s name is wrong, it may be wise to help someone to not make fun of themselves. “With that being said, some people always fix others,” adds Fulton.

A good litmus test? “Think about whether corrections will help the other person’s interests or whether it will meet the need to make your needs right,” Fulton says.

When “correction is awkward”

If you’re trying to jump in to help someone with mispronunciation, “it’s not affirmative, but a gentle correction, and you’re not embarrassed later, especially if you’re in a context where the person you’re talking to can help avoid further embarrassment,” says Garanti. Adding Chase, a licensed clinical social worker, because “shamefulness of someone in that moment can be far more harmful than we realize.”

Be careful not to go far in any other way. If they’re objectively wrong about something, it “will help them in the long run, so if you know that person well, it’s worth the trouble of fixing,” Garanti says.

Whether someone’s interests are bored with you or mispronunciation is falling into your nerves, approach every conversation about such a subject with grace. “Picking mercy in moderation reflects emotional intelligence and deeper respect for people’s humanity,” says Kasen.
