President Donald Trump has dismissed concerns that tariffs on imports from China could raise consumer costs, saying in an interview that “China will probably eat those tariffs.”

Trump was asked about the trade war with China in an ABC News interview that airs on April 29th.

ABC News Anchor and Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran said the 145% tariff was “essentially an embargo.”

“That’s good,” Trump replied. “They deserve it.”

Economists say tariffs could lead to higher prices in the range of imported goods.

“It’s going to raise prices for everything from electronics to clothing to buildings,” Moran said.

“You don’t know that. I don’t know if China will eat it,” Trump replied.

“In 145, they basically can’t do much business with the United States,” Trump added.

Trump also defended his deportation tactics. Pushing whether undocumented immigrants should be heard by the court before being taken from the country, the president said, “If people come to our country illegally, there is another standard.”

In the case of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, the Trump administration admitted in court that he was excluded for “administrative errors.” The president said the administrative lawyers “don’t say that,” and that he “is not the one making this decision” about whether he would return him.

Trump defended his move to punish perceived enemies, including revoking security clearances and chasing law firms on executive orders.

“When I say I’m dealing with rough people, I don’t treat people rough,” Trump said. “I was treated worse than any president in our country’s history, and people thought that was it… he left town, went on a helicopter, then I came back, and I have enormous support.”
