Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Fashion for Slave: Styling the Identity of Black Dandism and Black Diasporics, the exhibition theme explores the multicultural blend of African and European styles conveying black identity during the Atlantic diaspora.
“Dandism may seem frivolous, but it often brings challenges and transcends to social and cultural hierarchies,” Miller said on a Vogue-by-Vogue basis in a statement on February 4th. “We ask questions about identity, expression, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality and power.”

In connection with the Costume Institute’s “Super Fine” exhibit, the evening dress code is “tailored for you.”
According to Vogue, the code pays homage to the menswear focus on the exhibit, “deliberately designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretations.”
