The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that all new vaccines should be tested in placebo-controlled trials before they are approved for use, and raises urgent questions about the system used to clear each respiratory virus season in the updated COVID-19 booster.

“Under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, all new vaccines will be subject to safety testing in pre-licensed placebo-controlled trials, a fundamental deviation from past practices,” HHS said in a statement Wednesday.

The Covid-19 vaccine, first removed by the US Food and Drug Administration in the second half of 2020, is updated annually with a system similar to the one used for influenza vaccines, allowing better targeting circulating strains of the virus. The vaccine structure remains the same every year, but you can tweak the version of the virus it protects. The FDA usually selects strains of the vaccine that were updated in June, so it will be available for distribution by fall.

Experts warn that you will need a placebo-controlled trial before clearing the new version – participants will be enrolled, given some vaccines and placebo shots, and that you may be waiting for some time to assess safety and efficacy.

“The benefit of renewing vaccines annually to approach circulating strains is that they reveal protection against mild to moderate diseases for 4-6 months, especially for frail people, as antibody responses improve.”

A spokesman for the HHS did not immediately respond to an investigation into whether the new guidance is linked to the updated Covid-19 vaccine, but officials told CNN on Saturday that “the new Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are new and we need more gold standard science to ensure safety and efficacy for the public.” The formula drew a distinction from shots of flu that have been “tested and tested” for decades.

Questions about the fate of the Covid vaccine began to swirl after the FDA missed the April 1 deadline to decide whether to give full approval to the Novavacs vaccine, the only non-MRNA vaccine available to protect against the coronavirus. Novavax shots use more traditional protein-based techniques. A source familiar with situations where he was not permitted to speak on behalf of the agency told CNN that the vaccine is expected to be approved.

Novavax later suggests that the FDA would require a “off-the-counter commitment” for clinical trials and that vaccine research is necessary after receiving full approval (available through emergency use permits since 2022). The latest statement from HHS will be added to questions about whether a trial is required prior to approval, not only for the Novavax vaccine, but also for the latest versions of Moderna and Pfizer.

Experts said if that were the case, it would mark a new standard for the Covid vaccine.

“The FDA obviously took an approach that has been retained for years after the deliberation process, treating Covid-19 vaccine boosters like new products,” said Dorit Reiss, law professor at UC Law San Francisco. “They adopted the standard and now they’re changing it.”

Covid-19 is not fatal due to the height of the pandemic as the population develops broad immunity through both infection and vaccination, but the virus remains murdered and is particularly dangerous for the elderly. Between September 2023 and August 2024, there were over 36,000 deaths between Covid-19 and people over 65 years of age, CDC data shows.

In a statement Wednesday, HHS also alleged that the current system for monitoring vaccine safety, including vaccine adverse event reporting systems and vaccine safety data links, did not get enough vaccine injuries and “has become a template for regulatory errors.” HHS said it is currently building a surveillance system. “We will accurately measure the risks and benefits of vaccines.”

Offit, who co-invented the rotavirus vaccine and serves an independent panel of FDA vaccine advisors, said the claim that these systems are inadequate is wrong.

“Where is the evidence?” he asked. “I argue that all the evidence is on the other side.”

He noted that within weeks the system picked up very rare side effects, such as myocarditis and myocardial inflammation. This noted that it happened in about one in every 50,000 people who received the mRNA Covid-19 vaccine and rare blood clots in people who received the current discontinued vaccine, which affected around 250,000 people.

“That’s very good,” he said. “This kind of conception that people have lost faith in vaccines due to lack of safety surveillance systems is wrong.”

A synthetic chemical called phthalates found in consumer products such as food storage containers, shampoos, makeup, perfumes and children’s toys may have contributed to more than 10% of the global mortality rates caused by heart disease in 2018 among men and women aged 55 to 64.

Senior author Leonardo Trassande, professor of pediatrics and population health at Grossman School of Medicine at New York University, said: He is also the director of the Department of Environmental Pediatrics and the Center for Environmental Hazards Investigation at NYU Langone.

“Phthalates are known to destroy testosterone,” Trasande said, adding that in men, “low testosterone is a predictor of cardiovascular disease in adults.”

Phthalates have been linked in previous studies with reproductive problems, such as genital malformations and untreated testes in boys, as well as reproductive problems such as sperm count and testosterone levels in adult men. Research has linked phthalate erate to asthma, childhood obesity and cancer.

“The new study highlights the potentially enormous health and economic burden of DEHP exposure, which is consistent with existing concerns about risk,” said David Andrews, chief science officer of the Environmental Working Group, a consumer organization that monitors exposure to esthetic acid esters and other chemicals in plastics, in an email. He was not involved in the research.

The American Council of Chemicals, which represents the industry, declined to comment on the study, but emailed CNN that it was dedicated to promoting the benefits of hyphthalates such as DINP and DIDP.

Esterate Exposure and Risks

As it is often referred to as “chemicals everywhere,” phthalates are added to consumer products such as PVC plumbing pipes, vinyl flooring, rain and contamination resistant products, medical tubes, garden hoses, and some children’s toys, making plastic more flexible and less likely to break.

Other common exposures come from the use of phthalates in food packaging, detergents, clothing, furniture and automotive plastics. Phthalates also last longer scents, in addition to personal care items such as shampoos, soaps, hairsprays and cosmetics.

People are exposed when they breathe contaminated air or eat or drink food that comes into contact with plastic, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A new study published in Ebiomedicine on Tuesday examined the effects of ephthalate (2-ethylhexyl) di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, on global deaths in 200 countries and territories.

Researchers analyzed health and environmental data from a census of dozens of people, including urine samples containing chemical destructive products left behind by DEHP, known to be associated with cardiovascular disease, Trasande said.

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate is also linked to congenital abnormalities, cancer and reproductive harm in men, according to California Proposal 65, a law that requires businesses to place warning labels on products that notify consumers about the health effects of chemicals.

The researchers compared exposure to death statistics collected by the Health Measurement and Evaluation Institute, a US research group that collects global health information.

Analysis found that exposure to DEHP contributed to 356,238 deaths in 2018 out of men and women aged 55 to 64 years worldwide. Africa accounted for 30% of deaths from DEHP-related heart disease, while East Asia and the Middle East accounted for 25% of deaths, the study found.

Sara Hyman, an associate researcher at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, said the study is considered to be the first global estimate of health outcomes from exposure to DEHP.

“By highlighting the relationship between phthalates and major causes of death around the world, our findings add to the enormous evidence that these chemicals pose great dangers to human health,” Heiman said in a statement.

However, the limitations of this study stem from the US’s use of hazard ratios to estimate population-related deaths in other countries, EWG’s Andrews said.

“The authors acknowledge this limitation, but assume that the relationship between DEHP exposure and cardiovascular disease is globally consistent,” he said in an email. “This may not be true as there are significant differences in both exposure levels and CVD detection and access to treatment.”

Previous studies by Trasande and his team measured urinary phthalate concentrations in more than 5,000 adults in the US and compared their levels to the risk of early death over an average of 10 years.

In that study, the researchers found that phthalates could contribute to approximately 91,000 to 107,000 early deaths per year among Americans aged 55 to 64.. Research shows that those with the highest phthalate levels were at a higher risk of death from any cause, especially cardiovascular mortality.

The results were retained even after researchers controlled for pre-existing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, other common conditions, poor eating habits, physical activity, weight, and levels of other known hormone-destructive factors such as bisphenol A and BPA.

Researchers estimated that these deaths could cost around $40-$47 billion each year with losses in economic productivity.

Experts say it can be minimized to reveal exposure to phthalates and other endocrine disruptors.

“Be careful not to use plastic whenever possible. Reducing the use of ultra-highly processed foods can reduce the level of exposure to chemicals you come into contact with,” Trasande said. “Don’t put plastic containers in the microwave or dishwasher. Heat can break the lining, which can be absorbed more easily.”

Other tips for reducing exposure are listed below.

– Uses unscented lotion and laundry detergent.

– Use scentless cleaning products.

– Use glass, stainless steel, ceramic, or wood to hold and store food.

– Buy fresh fruits, frozen fruits and vegetables instead of canned or processed versions.

– Encourage frequent hand washing to remove chemicals from your hands.

– Avoid air purifiers and all plastics labeled 3, 6, and 7.

As artificial food dyes are increasingly restricted at the state and federal levels, some manufacturers are trying to switch to natural dyes to color their food.

Dr. Marty McCurry, Director General of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, announced at a briefing on April 22 that the agency will work with the industry to phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes in U.S. food supplies.

These dyes are commonly used to create food and beverage products that are bright and attractive to consumers. It includes Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5 and 6, Blue No. 1 and 2, and Green No. 3.

According to the FDA, natural food dyes that can replace them are derived from vegetables, fruits, animals and minerals.

Makary’s announcement is the latest move to ensure food companies stop using artificial dyes due to concerns about the adverse effects on animal and human health.

The FDA is quickly endorsing four new natural coloring substances and aims to quickly track reviews from others, including Gardière Extract Blue, Gardenia Blue, Butterfly Pea Flower Extract, and calcium phosphate.

“The FDA is asking food companies to (voluntarily) substitute petrochemical dyes with natural ingredients aimed at American children,” McCurry said in a news release. “… Given the growing concern among physicians and parents about the potential role of oil-based food dyes, we should not take risks and do everything possible to protect our children’s health.”

The FDA announcement follows a major change in the legal landscape regarding food additives over the past two years. California banned red No. 3 statewide in October 2023, and then in August it banned six other common dyes in school foods.

The FDA was effective on food on January 15th, 2027, drug effective on January 18th, 2028, and banned Red No. 3 in January, but now the agency is asking food companies to eliminate dyes more quickly. And in March, West Virginia passed its most drastic law to date, banning seven dyes and two preservatives.

“We’ve seen a lot of fun and hard work,” said Dr. Monica Justy, professor and vice-chairman of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Ohio State University. “Finally, we’ve seen some sort of regulatory action.”

Some natural dyes are already used in products sold in the US, and some stores have policies that prohibit the sale of food with synthetic dyes, said Melanie Benesch, vice president of the government of Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit environmental health organization.

CNN contacted the FDA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for comment, but did not return the time for publication.

Below is how it affects alternative dyes and their manufacturers and human health.

Many Natural dyes are already approved by the FDA and are adjusted in a different way than their artificial counterparts. The FDA requires manufacturers to submit samples of batches of synthetic colors for testing and certification. Natural color additives are exempt, but they are still valued by agents.

One of the most popular alternatives to bright red pigments is Cochineal extract or its lake, Carmine. (The lake is a fat-soluble version of the dye.)

Cochineal dyes are from the small, dried, crushed bodies of female cochineal insects that are almost and easily harvested from Peruvian cactus. It is so vigorously colored that simply crushing them with your fingers leaves a stain on them, and cochineal insects have been used as colorants for centuries, dating back to the INCA civilization that began in the 13th century.

Other natural dyes include anato extracts (yellow) from seeds of tropical tree seed, and blue to brown colorants produced from juice, powder or dehydrated beets, experts said.

There is also beta-carotene (yellow or orange) found in many plants, including carrots. Grape skin extract (red or purple); orange and red spice stermeric and saffron. According to experts, green chlorophyll, spirulina extract and matcha said.

“Naturally derived food colors come in a variety of ways to process them, and several methods are available for several colors,” said Renee Leber, Food Science and Technology Services Manager at the Food Technology Institute at the Food Technology Institute, via email. Research institute membership includes people working in food production.

As research into the effects of artificial dyes on human health remains underfunded, there is even less support for research into natural alternatives, experts said.

However, in general, “compounds that give color to fruits and vegetables tend to have additional beneficial properties for human health,” such as anti-inflammatory agents.

According to the Public Interest Center, a small percentage of consumers report fatal severity from hives to anaphylactic shock. This is fatal. Therefore, the ingredient is “identified as an allergic substance that must be declared on all food and cosmetic labels,” according to the FDA.

“These dyes have proteins that some people are allergic to,” says Dr. Marion Nestle, professor of public health in Paulette Goddard nutrition, food research and public health at New York University. “It can happen in very small amounts of sensitive people.”

However, since most natural dyes come from plants and are used in small quantities, “it’s hard to believe they’re effective,” Nestlé added.

Even if natural dyes may generally make human health safer, there are industry concerns about the potential impact on the appeal and feasibility of the product.

One reason manufacturers prefer petroleum-based dyes is that, in combination with other ingredients, they are preserved over time and when exposed to elements, their chemical structure does not change much, Justy said. Cochineal insects provide an intense and stable color, but the dyes in plant materials are not stable.

The difference is “very challenging for businesses, because, for example, if a company is producing 10 different red products, it could use one synthetic dye,” Giusti said. “However, if you want to replace synthetic colors with natural alternatives, you may need to use up to 10 natural dyes.”

Also, although there are many different alternatives to natural dyes, they cannot produce a spectrum of colours that some synthetic dyes can make. These factors can make products containing natural dyes more expensive than those with synthetic colors.

It can take six months to a year to convert only one product from synthetic dyes to natural colorants.

“It’s not like £150 million of beet juice is sitting down on a coincidence where the entire market could convert,” Paul Manning, the company’s chief executive, told the Associated Press. “Ten millions of pounds of these products need to be grown, drawn from the ground and extracted.”

It’s the same supply problem as cokinyl dye. According to the AP, approximately 70,000 republican insects are needed to produce around 2.2 pounds, or a kilogram of dye.

Some food companies have previously received backlash when switching to natural dyes, with some consumers reporting differences in taste. However, Nestlé said these experiences are likely to be biased perceptions as the product compositions usually remain the same.

The companies “were able to remove them in other countries and substitute vegetable dyes,” Nestlé said. “This seems easy to me.”
