Trump administrator ends $60 million in Harvard grants on suspicion of anti-Semitism

0

May 19 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Monday it has ended $60 million in federal grants to Harvard University.

US President Donald Trump’s administration has frozen or terminated federal grants and contracts for universities worth nearly $3 billion in recent weeks.

Since taking office in January, the Republican president has tried to overhaul the US academia using federal research funds.

The administration accused Harvard of continuing to consider ethnicity when considering student applications and allowed discrimination against Jews as a result of Palestinian student protests that have rocked American campuses last year.

Columbia University in New York targets allegations of anti-Semitism.

“HHS is ending multiple multi-year grant awards as Harvard University fails to address anti-Semitic harassment and racism.

Harvard University did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based agency previously said it “cannot absorb the overall cost” of the freeze grant, and it is working with researchers to help researchers find alternative funds. He is also suing the Trump administration over a decision to cut grants.

Earlier this month, the university settled a famous lawsuit by an orthodox Jewish student who said Harvard University ignored anti-Semitism on campus.

The settlement comes four months after Harvard promised additional protections to Jewish students. That’s because they settled two lawsuits that claimed it was a breeding ground for anti-Semitism.

Who is Kim Porter? Things you need to know about Diddy’s late girlfriend

0

play

Kim Porter and Sean “Diddy” Combs are like a pop culture power couple, and their decade-long romance is still centrally staging.

Porter, the late model actress who dated the hip-hop monk from 1994 to 2007, is referenced in Combs’ ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan, where Combs, 55, is accused of engaging in prostitution through sex trafficking, assault and transport. He pleads not guilty to all charges.

Porter’s enduring romance and the founder of Bad Boy Records grew up when Combs’ ex-girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura Fine, stood up. The former R&B star, who has also been involved with Combs for a decade, became open about his feelings towards Porter when he was opened up about the tragic abuse he allegedly experienced from Comb.

From his hip-hop love story with Combs to his tragic death in 2018, there’s everything you need to know about Kim Porter.

How did Diddy and Kim Porter meet?

Porter met Combs in the 1990s when he was an A&R executive at Uptown Records. At the time, Porter was R&B singer-songwriter Al B. Sure! I was dating.

“When I first saw her, she was in the studio with her ex-boyfriend,” Combs told Essence Magazine in a 2006 interview. “I wasn’t going to scream for her or anything, but I was admiring her – her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy – and I’m thinking, ‘I wish there was such a girl.’ ”

Porter was later hired as a receptionist for a pioneering hip-hop record label, and was the setting for budding romance.

“She was as smooth as ice,” Combs told the outlet. “She’s collected as cool and thinks before you talk. You meet a lot of young women. They don’t do that. Kim was never forced on her. She was always in control.”

After 13 years of dating, in 2007, they were called the only couple in Ong to officially call it, but the two were friendly and often spent their holidays together.

Do Diddy and Kim Porter have children?

Porter and Combs shared four children, including Porter’s 33-year-old son Quincy Brown. Other children in the couple include son Christian “King” Combs, 27, and twin daughters Dalilla and Jesse Combs.

How did Kim Porter die?

Porter passed away in November 2018 at the age of 47 after it was found unresponsive at his San Fernando Valley home. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that she had died of pneumonia.

Combs lamented Porter and paid tribute to their close bond in an emotional Instagram post shared a few days after her unexpected death.

“We were more than best friends. We were more than soulmates,” writes Combs. “And I’ll miss you. Super Black Love.”

What did Cathy say about Kim Porter?

During the testimony on May 15, Ventura Fine said there was a “je” to Porter, and the ju umpire was shown a series of text messages from 2013, where she saw Porter and Combs with her children, and was pissed that she was not invited to family vacations or gatherings. She also expressed concern that it appears to be a “side piece” rather than a partner at Combs.

While standing up on May 16th, Ventura Fine said she was attending a follow-up service ceremony for Porter, Georgia, when she saw Combs for the last time. She told the defense that when Combs called Porter a “soulmate” on social media, he determined it was “very hurtful.”

Kate Linklark supports the WNBA’s investigation into alleged fan abuse against Angel Reese: “We have no place in our game.”

0

CNN

Indiana Fever star Kate Linklark says he supports the WNBA investigation into allegations of racial abuse by fans directed at Chicago Sky Forward Angel Rees during a game between the two teams on Saturday.

The WNBA said it “strongly condemns all forms of racism, hatred and discrimination” following the incident, but the fever said they are supporting the league in the investigation.

“Our game has no place for that, and society has no place,” Clark, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, told reporters after practice Monday.

“It is certainly true that we want everyone who comes to our arena, whether it be players or fans, to have a great experience.

“I am grateful to the league (investigation) and I am grateful that the Fever organization has been at the forefront of its release from day one.

There was 4:38 left in the third quarter, with a fever of 56-42 56-42 in Saturday’s game, with Clark coming into intense contact with Reese’s right arm as Sky moved forward towards the basket and knocked a star in the sky to the ground.

Clark received a Fragrant 1 for a foul on the Lease.

Clearly upset, Reese stood straight up and headed back to her feet, trying to face off against Clark, who had returned to Reese and left as Indiana’s Aliya Boston stepped between them.

Clark’s foul was upgraded from an individual to Fragrant 1, with Reese and Boston respectively receiving technical fouls.

Both players have since dismissed the incident, and it is unclear whether suspicious racial slander is linked to the conflict.

Reese and Clark both robbed their rivalry, but the two players are closely linked, especially in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Championship Game after a fierce collision in college.

Fever won the season opener 93-58 on Saturday, with Clark having a triple double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The lease had 12 points and 17 rebounds.

The two teams will play three more times during the regular season.

Russian Ukraine says drone strikes continue after Trump Putin’s call

0

CNN

Ukraine and Russia accused each other of launching an attack drone overnight, hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with US Donald Trump – and once again refused an immediate ceasefire.

Russia has launched 108 Shahed drones and “various types of decoid drones,” the Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday on a telegram channel, adding that air defenses have destroyed the country’s east, central and north 93.

The strike comes after Trump and Putin were calling from an oval office after nearly two hours of conversation on Monday.

Following Cole, Trump said Kiev and Moscow would begin ceasefire negotiations “quickly.”

But Putin said the Kremlin is ready to work with Ukraine on “the possibility of a ceasefire for a certain period of time” if a corresponding agreement is reached.

Neither Putin nor Trump discussed the time frame for a possible ceasefire, said Yury Ushakov, presidential aide of the Kremlin.

Putin previously ignored proposals for a 30-day ceasefire from Washington and Kiev, and last week called Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky to meet in person at talks in Istanbul.

As turkey talks circulated, Trump said he didn’t think there would be a major breakthrough in peace talks until he spoke directly to Putin.

“Unfortunately, following the Trump-Putin call, the situation remains the same,” said Mikaylo Podraic, adviser to Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky.

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz in a post on X late Monday said European leaders decided to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions after Trump gave them an explanation with a call with Putin.

Trump said he would not take part in progress “because there is a chance” in new sanctions on Russia.

“I think there’s a chance to accomplish something. If you do, you can make it even worse, but there may be times when that happens,” Trump said.

Following Cole, Zelensky said there will be discussion about future locations for further talks.

The Russian state communications agency TASS said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told reporters that “no specific decisions have been made so far regarding the location for future contacts” with Ukrainian officials.

“We are primarily interested in a swift settlement by eliminating the root cause of this conflict,” Peskov said.

Putin “wants Ukraine to surrender,” William Taylor, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine and a well-known fellow at the Atlantic Council, told CNN’s “The Newsroom with Rosemary Church.”

“He wants Ukraine to surrender. He wants Ukraine to be disarmed… The Ukrainians are in a position where they can’t protect themselves,” Taylor said.

“That’s what Putin means when he says “the root cause.” ”

Watch as a Mexican ship raided the Brooklyn Bridge and killed two people.

0

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters that a female cadet and a male marine were killed in an accident

A tall Mexican navy ship called the Armada de la República Mexicana (ARM) Cuauhtémoc struck the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, May 17th at about 8:24pm, killing two sailors and wounding more than a dozen more.

The exact cause is not yet known, but after it had departed from South Street port, the ship had moved backwards along New York’s East River after colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge.

All three ship masts decorated with stringed lights collided with the bridge and were damaged upon impact. The Brooklyn Bridge was not subject to structural damage.

How the crash of a ship on the Brooklyn Bridge unfolded:

US National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) briefing starting May 19th:

May 13th, Around noon: The ship arrived in New York and was docked at Pier 17.

May 17th, Around 8:20pm: The ship left Pier 17 with the assistance of a tugboat. The intention was to sail south along the river to the east and head towards the sea.

The preliminary weather report described the current flowing towards the approximately 0.3 knot bridge. The westerly wind was blowing at about 10 knots. The ship’s speed increased to about 6 knots before colliding with the bridge.

8:24pm: As they were moving towards the bridge, the ship called for an area tugboat to assist via VHF radio, and two more requests for assistance were made.

8:24:45 PM: The ship’s mast collided with the bridge.

Of the 277 people on board, two have been killed, 22 people injured and three have been seriously injured, the Mexican Navy said on social media.

Videos shared online from bystanders show naval cadets in white uniforms hanging from damaged masts and ship cross-beam harness.

8:27 PM: The ship has stopped.

8:30 PM: NYPD and FDNY were on the scene.

“The Cuauhtémoc is currently moored at Pier 36, East River, as damage assessments and future actions are being determined for the vessel’s rescue plan,” the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The NTSB will require anyone with a video of the incident to send an email to withins@ntsb.gov to assist in the investigation.

Which ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge?

The Cuauhtémoc is a three-mast bark of 300 feet long steel 3-mast, released in 1982, according to a recent fact sheet from the ship handler. According to the fact sheet, the ship and its crew, named after the last Aztec emperor and its crew, are foreign Mexican diplomatic symbols.

The ship was a Mexican Navy training vessel and was docked in New York from May 13th to 17th. We were planning to head south from New York Harbor towards Iceland.

Its mission, dubbed “Integration of Mexican Independence in 2025,” began on April 6th, with the ship scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 countries over 254 days. Before landing in New York, I was visiting Jamaica, Havana, Cuba and Kingston, Mexico.

Where is Brooklyn Bridge?

How many people were killed in the Brooklyn Bridge accident?

Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum told reporters on Sunday that a female cadet and a male Marine had died of injuries. The two victims have been identified as América Sánchez, 20, and Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, 23.

The injured personnel were transported to a local hospital in Manhattan for care, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to the NTSB, New York City has helped transport 179 crew members abroad, with around 94 still on board and on board.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the Cuauhtémoc incident on the @Semar_MX training vessel at the Brooklyn Bridge,” Mexican US ambassador Ronald Johnson said in a post on X.

Why did the ship collide with the Brooklyn Bridge?

The NTSB is actively investigating the incident and refuses to provide a possible cause of crashes at this time. The agency released a preliminary report 30 days later, with the entire investigation likely taking 12 to 24 months, an NTSB representative said at a press conference on May 19.

Russian fighter jets will protect “shadow fleet” containers in the first move by Moscow, officials say

0

CNN

Until last week, the secret fleet of Russian oil ferry ships around the world showed no clear ties to the Kremlin. That changed in a dramatic escalation when Russia used fighters in apparent efforts to protect one of the tankers believed to be in the fleet.

The Estonian Defense Forces said that Russian SU-35 fighters had passed the ship within Estonian airspace as they tried to execute a check after the Estonian army contacted Jaguar, a volatile tanker approved by the UK earlier this month. The army eventually escorted tankers from the Estonian seas.

“This is very new,” Estonian Foreign Minister Margas Tsekna told reporters at a NATO meeting in Türkiye on Thursday. Russia is now “officially tied together and united itself” with the so-called Shadow Fleet, he added.

Others agree. “This seems to be a step-change in the Kremlin’s thinking,” Ed Arnold, a senior researcher at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a UK-based think tank, told CNN.

The “Shadow Fleet” estimated to be hundreds of ships that have no official connections with Russia include many old and unmaintained ships. Russia denies any role in damages.

Tankers have opaque ownership structures by many, and transport Russian oil for export to avoid Western sanctions. As such, they became the focus of further sanctions against Moscow.

Russia is the first to use “military action” in response to economic sanctions. “It is evidence of the level of threat we face on the eastern side of NATO,” French Foreign Minister Jeannoel Barro told journalists at a conference in Turkey.

The video, taken from the Jaguar Bridge, which appears to have been edited, shows a radio call from Estonian authorities requesting a change course in Estonia, where Estonian military ships and aircraft are visible around the tankers. CNN supports the footage details and was shared online by Margarita Simoneyan, editor-in-chief of Russian state-run media outlet RT.

On May 13, 2025, this screen glove was taken from social media and airplanes flew near a Russian-bound oil tanker in the Gulf of Finland.

Later in the video, Russian only SU-35 fighter jet sweeps in front of the tanker, previously named Argent, according to the cargo record and the British government. In response, the Portuguese F-16 jet on the NATO mission in Estonia was rushed to the area to monitor Russian aircraft, NATO said.

The Jets are part of the strengthened NATO presence in Northern Europe since the full-scale invasion of Russia’s Ukraine in 2022.

“Maybe what the Kremlin is trying to do is push it back, so hopefully the NATO countries will be surprised by what happened (last Tuesday),” Arnold said on Rusi.

“There are probably some people in NATO who are a little worried about this.

For Estonians, the invasion of Russian jets into Estonian space is evidence of Western sanctions being bitten.

The incident “executively demonstrates that surveillance and approval of the Shadow Fleet is effective and such efforts must be further strengthened,” the Estonian Defence Force said in a statement.

CNN was unable to find a registered owner for Jaguar due to comments. The Russian Ministry of Defense has refused to respond to CNN’s request for comment. The Kremlin had previously refused to respond to accusations that it was using the “Shadow Fleet.”

Following repeated incidents in January when the ship damaged the undersea infrastructure of the Baltic Sea, NATO launched the “Baltic Sentry” initiative, strengthening its military presence in the waters.

“We believe the incident (Tuesday) is a reaction to the Baltic Sea Athletic sent,” NATO spokesman Colonel Martin O’Donnell told CNN. “Russian unstable actions will not prevent us from acting within the scope of international law to maintain maritime safety, security and freedom of navigation.”

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz said on Friday that a new sanctions package could be adopted after Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to participate in Russia’s talks with Ukraine last week in Turkey. Meltz previously said that the Russian “shadow fleet” – “permanently operated in the Baltic Sea with up to 300 ships” would be specifically targeted in this package.

Amid a possible move by Tatttat, the Green Award, a Greek-owned oil tanker, was detained by Russia on Sunday for transporting Russian waters on routes agreed by Estonia, Finland and Russia.

CNN contacted the ship’s owner and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comments. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not responded.

Estonian authorities have implemented more than 450 checks in Tallinn-controlled waters since June last year, according to the country’s Ministry of Transport. This includes the Gulf of Finland, one of the main conduits of Russia’s overseas trade.

2025 BMW X3 is faster, more agile and ready to run

0

Strong Points

  1. Improved efficiency
  2. Even better handle
  3. Large cargo hold

Cons

  1. You need to get used to interior styling
  2. Some important features embedded in the touchscreen
  3. Standard driver assist sting

The name change and updated styling aren’t just differences between the redesigned 2025 BMW X3 30 XDRIVE. Under the larger body of the Compact SUV, the bones have been improved that show that BMW is still interested in providing an exciting driving experience. The entry-level X3 is more practical than the previous model.

The outgoing X3 offered a solid combination of usefulness, comfort and fun, but it’s a bit slower for the segment and some rivals are better value. Is the latest base model improved with equations? How does it stack up with one of our major competitors, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class SUVs?

Hybrid Boost Good – Reason 1: Fuel Efficiency

Most X3 viewers should appreciate the substantial bumps in efficiency that come with the now mild hybrid 2.0 liter turbocharged inline 4 engine. Previously, the crossover was rated as a city/highway of 21/28 mpg, but the new version had jumped to 27/33 mpg. That’s big. Without changing the capacity of the 17.2 gallon fuel tank, the X3 can go 499 miles, more than 47 miles than before.

More importantly, it is to change the tables of rivals like the Mercedes GLC300 more efficiently. The 2025 version of the Mercedes Benz returns 23/31 mpg and has a slightly larger tank (17.4 gallons), but the GLC’s 452-mile range chases the BMW.

New speed – Reason 2: Hybrid is a good boost

Updated X3 30 BMW 0-60 mph estimates are recorded on the test track. 6.0 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the 2022 model I tested. However, the added Grant is not enough to keep up with a healthy 148 pound GLC. This allows for the same 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It also uses a 2.0-liter turbo fore with a mild hybrid boost of 48 volts, and the system contributes up to 23 hp and relatively gargantuan148 lb-ft of torque. The BMW setup offers just 11 hp and 18 lb-ft.

Still, the X3’s power is right, easily blending into quick moving interstate traffic, groaning enough to perform most of the through moves. The BMW injects some artificial engine noise into the cabin, but we almost ignore them and can completely down or shut off via the active sound design settings on the touchscreen.

Keep the road better

The X3’s handling improvements have also been promised, winning the SkidPad test in 2022. All trims feature a stiffer body, wider rear track, modified double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle suspension. The SUV also comes with a 2,200m sports package, adding a variety of sports steering and stiff springs and dampers. It also includes a slightly aggressive set of Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 6 tires.

The X3 equipped in this way also surpasses the GLC300 AWD. The difference isn’t that big, but BMW had an average outer g of 0.92g versus Mercedes’ 0.87. In the Figure 8 test of RaceTrack-Aping, the X3 was faster on average, digging in 25.8 seconds at 0.72 g, but at 26.7 seconds at 0.71 g.

What this means for the owner is that the X330 is enthusiastic about driving. It took me a bit of time to set up the configuration I like (6 steps from the touchscreen), but once everything was dialed it was worth it. When Sport Mode engages, power delivery is smooth and gear shifts are sharp. Digs how BMW adjusts this transmission, upshifts with Redline, downshifts under braking, and maintains optimal gear around the SkidPad.

Like many vehicles these days, there is no much feedback through the X3’s steering wheel, but the M-Sport Rack makes the steering feel very directly. The chassis was well balanced, and the all-wheel drive system effectively disrupts power.

As for braking, the best stops of 2025 are shorter legs than the 2022 and GLC. The pedal felt a little soft at first, but the trip was short and easy to chew, so X3’s body barely jumped in with panic stops.

The Life of X3

The previous generation X3 already offers more cargo space than the GLC300, and the new model is based on leads. An additional 2.8 cubic feet of standard cargo capacity will bring the trunk to 31.5 cubic cubes, with maximum volume (rear seat) growing from 62.7 to 67.1 cubic ft. GLC measurements are 21.9 and 56.3 cubic feet.

The updated cabin styling is different. I love the new curved screen that marries the SUV’s configurable 12.3-inch driver display and 14.9-inch infotainment interface in one frame. The design is somewhat minimalist, moving much of the physical controls from the SUV’s center stack to the touchscreen. We weren’t very enthusiastic about new ventilation controls for the interior. And the new ambient lighting is definitely not subtle.

The standard Niceties are somewhat limited as this model comes from the more accessible end of the lineup, but the test vehicle had a premium $3,400 package. This brings features like a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, remote engine start, and a panoramic roof. The pack also features BMW’s Travel and Comfort System, with front seats equipped with sockets for convenient installation such as tablet holders, folding tables and clothing hooks. Finally, the X3S with the premium package will win an active driving assistant professional. It comes with adaptive cruise control, and Parking Assistant Professional Self-Packing complements small amounts of standard driver assistance: forward collision mitigation, active blind spot detection, lane keep assist and automatic parking assistant.

total

The X3’s $10,200 option put the price tested at $61,325. The similarly equipped 2025 GLC300 4Matic ring goes up for a more expensive $66,050. After all, that’s another thing this Bimmer is doing. This is the affordable price for these SUVs from the Prestige brand. Even the X3’s base price is $1,275 less than the GLC AWD (Mercedes offers an entry-level variant of cheaper rear-wheel drive, while BMW has removed the SDRIVE RWD model).

2025 x3 30 Most people who choose xdrive are happy with their purchase. It’s more practical choice with improved efficiency and greater cargo hold compared to outgoing models. The new curved screen is the best part of the Redone interior. It also has enough performance to drive the fan, especially when checking boxes on available M Sport packages.

Some of the risks of the design BMW has incorporated inside this SUV can take some time to get used to. Some more standard driver assists would be good, especially for this type of coin. But we’re generally bullish about the new X3, but it’s a wise little luxury SUV that will fulfill BMW’s promises.

Ranking the final Stanley Cup matchups between the remaining teams

0

play

The Edmonton Oilers and Dallas stars are facing each other in the NHL Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row, which started in Dallas on Wednesday night.

The Eastern Conference Finals will see the Florida Panthers and the Carolina Hurricanes meet in a rematch of the 2023 Series. The series opens Tuesday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Last year’s Championship Round, Star vs. Hurricane, Star vs. Panthers, Oilers vs. Hurricane, Oilers vs. Panthers: Star vs. Hurricane, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, Star, and four matchups remain.

Which matchup is the best matchup to watch? Everything has its benefits. USA Today ranks four possibilities for the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.

Why not have a rematch? Last year’s Stanley Cup final was certainly fun, at least until the end. Florida seemed poised for a sweep after winning the first three games and being blown away 8-1 in Game 4.

Both teams are full of stars and deeper than last season. Edmonton and Florida have top crimes for the remaining four teams. Plus, there are plenty of storylines. Will the Panthers be repeated and will they call them dynasty after three consecutive trips to the final? Will the Oilers be the first Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens? Will Edmonton’s Conor McDavid, last year’s playoff MVP, and Leon Dry Saitole win their first championship? The Oilers will have a home ice advantage this time.

Do you want a fresh face? This works. Dallas was the last in the 2020 final for Carolina in 2006. Furthermore, there is a factor in Mikko Lantanen. He already managed to trade him incredibly early in the season with a hurricane before defeating the Colorado Avalanche this postseason. He has the opportunity to knock off another former team as the hurricane placed him on the star when he feared that he would not sign in to Carolina. He has playoff strength with a league-high nine goals and 19 points. However, the Hurricanes were good at neutralizing other team stars. Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov is just behind Rantanen with eight goals.

3. Dallas Star vs Florida Panthers

These teams were well represented in four countries’ showdowns, so they have top-end talent. Finland’s Olympic teams will certainly pay attention. These teams also have the best power plays left. Panthers coach Paul Maurice and star coach Peter DeBoer is friends and highly quotable. Deboer is 9-0 in all the winners games and Maurice is 6-0, so he hopes to move this to Game 7.

4. Edmonton Oilers vs. Carolina Hurricane

This will be the rest of the top offense (Edmonton) vs. the best defense (Carolina), but the hurricane style is not always the most exciting. This was also the rematch of the 2006 Stanley Cup final. The Hurricanes led that series 3-1, but the eighth seeded Oilers fought back before Carolina won Game 7. Rod Brindamour was the first player to lift the Stanley Cup as Hurricane captain. Will he be able to lift the trophy for the first time as a coach?

FAA investigates short radio outages at facilities leading Newark Flights

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating short radio outages at facilities handling flights at Newar Liberty International Airport.

Area C, the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility, lost radio frequency for approximately two seconds at around 11:35am ET on May 19, said in a statement to USA Today. According to the agency, all aircraft remained safely separated and operation is normal.

Flight dictates flights in and out of Newark, New Jersey, have faced a string of outages since April 28, when temporary radio and radar outages led air traffic controllers to lose communication with incoming flights. The first incident led to dozens of flight detours.

Following the April 28 incident, several controllers took medical leave under the Federal Employee Compensation Act, citing the stress of repeated suspensions. Their absence and ongoing staffing issues led to equipment failures as well as permanent flight disruptions at Newark Airport.

The incident has updated the country’s scrutiny regarding the aging air traffic control system, with US authorities warning that the FAA can experience other communications failures. On May 12, a Colorado air traffic control facility experienced a communication halt for approximately 90 seconds.

“What you see in Newark, we have to fix it, we’re going to do it quickly, but we’re going to do it right,” Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said at a May 12 press conference.

“Cannot process scheduled operations at current level”

On May 12, the FAA announced that it was convening an emergency task force and taking emergency measures to quickly track it, to prevent additional communications halts at the Philadelphia Tracon facility, according to Reuters. Principal Chris Rochelow, acting Federal Aviation Administration, said the task force will include L3Harris Technologies, Verizon and other technical experts.

The FAA also met with airline executives and proposed reducing the number of aircraft operations at Newark Airport after a three-day one-on-one meeting, USA Today reported on May 16.

The agency proposed an hourly arrival rate of less than 28 flights until June 15th, but one of the airport’s runways is under construction. The arrival rate will then be limited to 34 per hour until October 25th, when construction is not underway.

In a letter to United Airlines employees, CEO Scott Kirby, who cited the FAA, said Newark Airport is designed to handle 77 departures and arrivals per hour at peak times, but the airline is designed to schedule more flights regularly. The new proposed arrival rate is well below the maximum capacity.

The FAA said it plans to finalize arrival fees after May 28th, according to Reuters.

“The airport clearly cannot handle the current level of scheduled operations,” the FAA said, adding that the proposal would “reduce excessive scheduling, flight delays and cancellations to acceptable levels.”

Federal officials plan to improve aging air traffic control systems

Federal officials say the FAA is “slow modernisation.” According to a 2024 report from the Government Accountability Office, the agency has 138 information systems for air traffic control, with 51 being unsustainable due to outdated functionality, lack of spare parts and other issues.

On May 8, Duffy proposed spending billions of dollars on modernizing the national air traffic control system over the next three to four years. The Transport Secretary noted that equipment breakdowns like Newark Airport will become more common if infrastructure is not upgraded.

“Decades of neglect left us with an outdated system that indicates its age. Building this new system is an economic and national security need, and it’s time to fix it,” Duffy said in a statement.

The proposal comes after the FAA and the Department of Transport promised to upgrade to an air traffic control system that begins in Newark. The agency said it is beginning to work on adding redundant communications equipment and plans to increase the employment of air traffic controllers.

Nationally, the FAA has around 3,500 air traffic controllers, according to Reuters. The area responsible for Newark Airport has staffing levels eligible for 38 certified controllers, but now there are 24 in place.

The four people arrested under Tokyo’s strict yakuza gang law are not the reason you think

0

Tokyo
CNN

Think of a famous Japanese yakuza gang. And you might consider a very tattooed man to take part in a bloody battle.

However, last week, four men were arrested in Tokyo for a more mediocre crime – running an office for a yakuza who was too close to the library.

The suspect, ages 55 to 77, “conspired” to run the office from June 2024 to February 2025. The city has strict rules on where yakuza offices can operate as part of its campaign to eliminate organized crime.

The oldest 77 people are members of an organization affiliated with the Sumiyoshi Kai Organized Crime Syndicate, one of Japan’s largest yakuza groups, the statement added.

Yakuza known for its strict hierarchy and honor code – Boryokudan – Works with everything from fear tor and money laundering to drugs and sex trafficking.

It’s far from being an underground organization, many of which are registered with the police and have a nationally established presence.

The National Police Agency (NPA) lists the business addresses of several Yakuza organizations on its website. For example, Sumiyoshikai’s headquarters is located in the Akasaka district, high in Tokyo, not too far from the parliamentary building.

According to the NPA, during its heyday in the 1960s, the Yakuza were run internationally and had over 184,000 members. However, their numbers have been steadily declining over the last few decades as police crackdowns suppress their activities.

They are legally permitted to exist, but regulations have made it difficult for gangs to survive as they have made it illegal to hire yakuza, pay off their compensation, and share profits. Securing a mobile phone contract and even renting an apartment became even more difficult.

Police data show that in 2024, the number of members of the Organized Crime Syndicate fell below 20,000 to a record low of 18,800 for the first time.

In Tokyo, Yakuza offices cannot be operated within 200 meters of schools, child welfare centers, community halls, museums, probation offices, family courts, etc.

Companies cannot hire Yakuza members as security personnel, provide payments for services, or sign contracts that “encourage” activities with Yakuza.

As a result, the Yakuza group has been reduced and is currently committed to pursuing or behaving a headline of disbandment, a new law-abiding life.

In April, Yamaguchi Gumi, Japan’s largest yakuza crime syndicate, pledged to end a long-standing war with rivals after police strengthened surveillance and restricted activities. The three senior members of the gang vowed to “end all internal battles” and handed the letter to police saying they would “never cause trouble,” police told CNN.

The country’s largest grocery store chain has launched a voluntary recall of baby foods of green pear, kiwi, spinach and peas, produced by Bowman Andros LLC, released in a statement on May 9th.

The affected products were sold in 4-ounce plastic pouches and distributed to Publix grocery stores.

The chain, which operates around 1,400 stores in eight states, said no cases of the disease had been reported at the time of the statement.

The potentially shocking product has been removed “from all store shelves,” the director of Communications Publix Maria Blouse said in a statement.

Publix said nothing that affected the unit of the product, but said the recall was carried out in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was caused by routine sampling.

Experts predict that all fugitives will be caught

0

play

The location of the six inmates who ran from a New Orleans prison by climbing the hole behind the toilet remains unknown, but experts say the escape is likely to be caught.

When law enforcement officers hunt for escape, the odds of recapture are “very high,” Bryce Peterson, an adjunct professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who conducted extensive research into prisoner escapes, told USA Today.

“Over 90% of the prisoners who run away will be recaptured,” said Peterson, a senior research scientist at the CNA Center for Justice Research and Innovation, on May 19. “And some of the New Orleans prisoners face long sentences, federal, state and local governments working together.

Originally, ten inmates between the ages of 19 and 42 fled the parish prison in Orleans early on May 16th. The prisoner pulled the “flawed” cell door from the truck and escaped through a hole in the wall behind the toilet and sink units. Inmates faced charges ranging from aggravated assault to murder.

Four inmates have been captured, with six remaining large.

The running escape probably has a “network of resources”

The exact amount of time fugitives can avoid capture depends on how much they plan to escape, Anthony Kangelosi, an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former former US S and Secret Service agent, told USA Today.

And law enforcement is filling its hands, Cangelosi said, as the FBI believes others from outside are helping the seven prisoners.

“They probably have a network of resources that the other three didn’t have, or the captured people were fooled by their plans,” Kangelosi said. “A myriad of factors are at play.”

They also said on May 19 that if the fugitives were prepared enough to escape, they were “very motivated to not get caught.”

“Especially when they have a lot of time to think about this, while deciding when they were going to do it, where they’re going, who’s going to help them. The last thing in their mind is getting caught,” Kangelosi said.

“You don’t have much money and there’s no real change to your clothes. You have to blend in to keep running for a certain amount of time,” Cangelosi added. “And you’ll need shelter and you’ll need food. I’m sure some of them are being embraced and helped by someone they know.”

Authorities may be scrutinizing Escapees’ visitors and phone records. If they have access to emails for clues, Cangelosi and Peterson added.

And now, it’s been a few days at LAM, so experts say the authorities’ searches have expanded to check known locations of family members and close friends.

“The footprint they can chase could lead to trails to capture them,” Kangelosi said.

Inmates are rarely escaped

There are “very few studies on inmate escape,” Peterson said. However, a 2016 study he analyzed showed that over 600 prisoner escapes in 2009, with the majority being captured by over 92%. And this study shows that most escapes have escaped that low-security facilities are opportunity-driven.

Peterson said that while prisoner escapes are generally unusual, it usually happens at local facilities as well. In most cases, criminals may simply leave or not return if they are out for a work release.

“It happens much more often than inmates escape from the facility, overcome barriers, or overcoming security guards,” Peterson said.

However, Peterson said that the lack of comprehensive national data makes it difficult to estimate the number of prisoners’ breaks across the United States.

Violence caused by escape is rare

In his study, Peterson said about 19% of escapes result in some form of violence. Most of the violence is minor. For example, you may push or push the corrections officer while running away. But when fugitives come out in the community, violence is less common, Peterson said.

“They don’t want to pay attention to themselves. They focus on finding two things, like food and shelter. Third, they are typically captured very quickly and don’t have much opportunity to commit violent behavior,” Peterson said.

But for prisoners who fled in New Orleans, the more they weren’t in custody, the more likely they would be to resort to violence, Peterson said.

“The more desperate they become to maintain their freedom, the more opportunities that interaction in the community creates for them to resort to violence,” Peterson said. “The sooner they are captured, the better.”

The safest sunscreen for you and your family in 2025

0

According to an annual report that analyzes more than 2,200 sunscreens available for purchase in 2025, only a quarter of sunscreens on U.S. store shelves provide safe and effective protection from the harmful rays of the sun.

“Our standards include the ability of sunscreens to provide balanced protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and the ability of harmful chemical ingredients in our products,” says David Andrews, Chief Science Officer of the Environmental Working Group, EWG, a consumer organization that has been producing the annual sunscreen guide since 2007.

Released Tuesday, the 2025 Sunscreen Guide lists the best baby and child sunscreens, including the best “Bang for the Buck.” Highly rated daily sunscreen, including a moisturizer with SPF. The best lip balm with SPF. And top recreational sunscreen designed for outdoor activities such as sports and beach time.

“There are nearly 500 products that consumers recommend seeking as their first choice,” Andrews said. “We want people to wear sunscreen and at the same time realize there are other ways to protect their skin. It’s a very effective method to look for shade, wear a wide hat, wear a lightweight long sleeve shirt and pants, especially if you’re worried about sunscreen materials.”

Choosing not to protect your skin from the sun, an idea promoted by Tiktok influencers, should not be an option, according to Dr. Kathleen Suzzi, a dermatology surgeon at Yale School of Medicine.

“Extensive research has shown that ultraviolet rays from the sun are a key cause of skin cancers, such as melanoma. At this point it’s really uncontroversial,” Suzzi told CNN in a previous interview. “UV rays can be found in both UVA and UVB, both of which have been found to damage the DNA of skin cells.”

Sunscreen safety includes choosing and applying safe sunscreen at will, experts say.

There are two types of sunscreens: chemicals and minerals. Chemical sunscreens are designed to be absorbed by the skin Chemical reactions absorb ultraviolet rays as energy and disperse them as heat.

A 2019 US Food and Drug Administration tested that seven chemical components, avobenzone, oxybenzone, ocbenzone, ecamsuol, homosalate, octalitate, and octino acid salts, were absorbed into the bloodstream from the skin after a day of use.

The concentration of seven chemicals in the blood increased daily after application and exceeded FDA safety levels one week later. Two chemicals on day 21 – homoate salts and oxybenzone, still above the safety threshold.

Once in the bloodstream, these chemicals can enter the waterways through wastewater, threatening coral reefs and aquatic organisms. Hawaii is a result of the growing devastation of coral reefs. Key West, Florida. The US Virgin Islands; Bonaire; Alba; Palau, a Pacific island, prohibits the use of several chemical sunscreens, particularly oxybenzone.

Oxybenzone is also associated with lower testosterone levels in adolescents, hormonal changes in males, and short pregnancy pregnancy and destruction of baby birth weight.

However, according to EWG’s 2025 screen guide released Tuesday, the use of oxybenzone usage has declined dramatically. Oxybenzone currently belongs to 9% of its products, once it reaches 70% of non-mineral sunscreens, according to Andrews.

The Personal Care Products Council, which represents sunscreen manufacturers, opposed the findings of the report.

“This report hinders consumer disruption and poses serious risks by undermining public confidence in products that are scientifically proven, rigorously tested and highly effective in protecting against harmful UV rays.”

Mineral-based sunscreens behave differently. Instead of being absorbed by the skin, minerals physically deflect and block the sun’s rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two FDA approved mineral sunscreen ingredients that appear to be harmful to marine ecosystems.

“Of the 2,217 products tested in this year’s report, 43% use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide since only 17% in 2007,” Andrews said. “That’s good news for the consumer and the environment.”

However, some mineral products may contain chemical “boosters” designed to artificially increase the sunscreen coefficient (SPF), the report says.

“Using chemical boosters can lead to lower concentrations of active mineral ingredients at the cost of consumer safety,” Andrews said. “We want to make sure that these sunscreens offer balanced UVA and UVB protection with the SPF advertised on the label.

Some of these boosters, such as salicylic acid solvents and BOS, absorb ultraviolet rays like chemical sunscreen ingredients, Andrews said.

“But they are mainly sold as a solvent that improves how the product feels on the skin and reduces the white casting that mineral sunscreen can leave behind,” he said.

“BOS is structurally similar to Octisalate, one of 12 chemical sunscreen ingredients that the FDA has identified as requiring more safety data,” added Andrews. “However, BOS is not regulated as an active ingredient and has not received the same level of safety rating.”

EWG first raised concerns about the SPF booster in an August 2016 letter to then Commissioner Robert Caliph in August 2016, urging them to investigate “sunscreen materials that allow manufacturers to promote the higher SPF value of commercial sunscreen products without truly enhancing protection from UVA and UVB rays.”

Agents should also investigate “protection from redness of the skin, immunosuppression, long-term skin damage, and during cancer.” To date, the FDA has not taken action, Andrews said.

The FDA proposed updated rules for sunscreen safety in 2019. The industry was asked to provide additional tests on 12 sunscreen chemicals with seven concerns presented by FDA testing. Andrews said that hasn’t happened yet.

The FDA proposal also asked manufacturers to test spray sunscreen products to prove that aerosolized chemicals cannot be inhaled into the deep lungs.

“When the FDA tested aerosol cosmetics a few years ago, they discovered that some products had very small particle sizes that could be inhaled into the deep lungs and lead to potential health hazards,” Andrews said. “The same concern applies to sunscreen.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, inhalation of such particles can “has serious health effects on the highest-risk individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, those with diabetes, the elderly, and children (up to 18 years old).

However, aerosol sunscreens continue to be popular among consumers – 26% of the sunscreens tested were sprays – despite the potential inhalation risks and the difficulty of providing even and proper coverage with sprays, Andrews said.

“Australian studies have found that even under conditions of light winds of 6-10 miles, for example, a significant portion of aerosol sunscreen is simply blown away,” he said. “I was at a football game last weekend. When someone sprayed sunscreen, it felt like it had crossed the entire field. They’re not sure they have sunscreen on themselves.”

The FDA also calls for a 60 SPF cap on sunscreen products in its 2019 proposal, saying that profits for those over 60 are very small. Therefore, labeling sunscreens at levels above SPF above 60 can lead to misleading consumers by providing a false sense of sunscreen, the FDA said. That hasn’t been achieved either, and consumers continue to spend their money on these products, Andrews said.

“One of the main factors in consumer purchases is the highest possible SPF count,” he said. “Consumers have not received a message that higher SPF values do not offer clear benefits.”

CNN reached out to the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA, for comment, but did not respond before it was released.

Genetic testing company 23AndMe is expected to be acquired by pharmaceutical company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals after its bankruptcy in March, the company announced on Monday, May 19th.

Regeneron purchased the development company for $256 million at a bankruptcy auction with the aim of using genomic data to promote Durcty Discovery, the company said in a statement Monday.

More importantly, for consumers who have privacy concerns during the process, the pharmaceutical company has committed to abide by 23AndMe’s existing privacy policy, saying it “prioritizes the privacy, security and ethical use of 23andMe’s customer data.”

“As a world leader in human genetics, Regeneron Genetics Center has a proven track record of protecting genetic data for people around the world. He also said he is Senior Vice President of Regeneron Genetics Center and Head of the Statement, using this data to pursue discoveries that benefit science and society.

23AndMe will continue to operate as a personal genomics service. It first gained notoriety as the first company to allow customers to send DNA through household swabs and receive digital maps of their ancestors in return.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, allowing later court-appointed supervisors to monitor the use of genetic data collected from 15 million users through the sale. Regeneron has agreed to allow supervisors to confirm the intended use of that data.

Since the October 2023 data breaches affected 6.9 million customers, 23andMe has faced scrutiny from its customers and lawmakers.

In a statement Monday, the 23AndME Chair of the board’s special committee said “we are pleased to have reached a transaction that maximizes the value of our business and allows us to maintain our choices and consent regarding client privacy, choices and genetic data while maintaining our mission.”

The statement also thanked Regeneron for expanding the recruitment to employees in the affected department.

This sale is subject to approval through bankruptcy proceedings and related regulatory bodies. It is expected to close in the third quarter.

Ruth Eleonora Lopez: El Salvador arrested, human rights lawyer critical of President Viquere

0

CNN

El Salvadoran authorities have arrested a prominent lawyer critical of President Naive Bukere. This was arrested for a move criticised by rights groups who said it reflected the country’s growing trend in “authoritarianism.”

The Attorney General’s Office of El Salvador has accused Ruth Eleono Lopez, head of the anti-corruption and justice forces of rights group Cristál, of cooperating in “theft of funds from state funds.”

“Investigations and information collected during the attacks identified her active participation in the conduct she was charged,” the Attorney General’s Office said.

CNN is requesting more information from the prosecutor’s office.

Speaking at a press conference with Cristosal leaders on Monday, Lopez’s mother and husband said the arrest was part of a recurring pattern in which activists were detained, refused to contact their families, and their whereabouts were hidden.

They alleged that authorities had appeared at her home “pretending to be false” and that there was a traffic accident seducing her outside. She was later detained and was not allowed to see the warrant, they said. They added that they still don’t know of any formal charges beyond what the Attorney General’s office posted to X.

“This sends a message that the government is willing to violate human rights. At this point, it barely tries to hide it. It actually admits it,” said Abraham Abrego, director of strategic litigation at Christosal.

The organization labelled the move as “short-term forced loss disappear.” This is because you don’t know where Lopez, a lawyer and university professor, is taking place. He asked authorities to allow Lopez’s lawyers to meet with her.

Lopez has led a criticism of the Buquere government’s lack of transparency, denounces the abuses the state allegedly committed to crack down on crimes during an ongoing emergency, and denies the rise in public debt without buying Bitcoin for investment or use of public funds. She also criticizes the government’s decision to support mining, among other things.

Recognised by the BBC on the list of 100 influential and inspiring women in 2024, Lopez was an advisor to the former president of Eugenioticus, the highest election courtroom between 2009 and 2014.

Chicas is facing criminal lawsuits over the crime he pleaded not guilty after being arrested last February on suspicion of illegal enrichment for administrative disadvantage.

CNN is seeking comment from Chicas and his attorneys on these charges.

Since taking office in 2019, Bukel has for years enacted controversial measures to stem the crime and gang violence that have plagued the country.

In 2022, with the support of lawmakers, he declared a state of emergency that would allow the government to temporarily suspend constitutional rights, including the rights of legal defense provided by the state. The measure was intended to last for 30 days, but has been extended dozens of times and continues to this day.

Authorities say security forces have arrested around 87,000 people nationwide, or more than 1% of Salvadorans in the three years since it was declared.

The government argues that crackdowns have made the country safer, but critics say it violated people’s rights and led to countless illegal detentions.

International groups, including Amnesty International, condemned Lopez’s arrest in a joint statement on Monday, saying the Salvador emergency is “not only being used to deal with gang-related violence, but also as a tool to silence critical voices.”

CNN contacted the presidency for comment.

David’s Bridal’s New Diamond & Pearl offers high-end wedding dresses

David’s Bridal is opening up a new bridal retail concept aimed at providing a “high, curated, personalized” experience for brides looking for the perfect wedding dress.

The concept, released last Thursday, shares the name Diamond & Pearl, the name of the popular prince song. According to the company, it appears to offer a “space that seamlessly blends timeless elegance with modern charm.”

“At David, we believe every bride deserves a magical experience and we start the moment she stepped into one of our stores,” Kelly Cook, CEO of David’s Bridal, said in a news release. “We are using diamonds and pearls to take this promise to the next level.”

Where is Diamonds and Pearls?

The first Diamond & Pearls location is currently open to shoppers, booked in Delray Beach, Florida, with a second location to open later this year. The store aims to combine “high-end bridal boutique hospitality with David’s recent technology” and is “designed for a new generation of brides who crave modern styling options, personalization and luxurious ways to shop for dream dresses.

According to David’s Bridal, Diamonds & Pearls Stores features a “thoughtfully edited selection” with about a third of options found in the traditional David bridal store, tailored to “the most trending styles and silhouettes.” The store’s concept is also intended to “revolutionize” the in-store and digital retail experience, the company said.

Another location is set to open later this year, but it’s exactly the place that hasn’t been disclosed yet.

David’s Bridal dealt with the calamity of bankruptcy

The opening of this new concept has been a major problem for retailers in recent years. In April 2023, David’s Bridal filed for bankruptcy and fired more than 9,200 employees. In July 2023, they were able to sell their businesses to asset manager CION Investment Corp in a free transaction, Reuters reported. In 2018, the chain also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but came out the following year.

The Senate confirmed on Monday that Charles Kushner, father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, is the US ambassador to France and Monaco.

play

WASHINGTON – The Senate on Monday confirmed that Charles Kushner, the father of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will serve as US ambassador to France and Monaco.

Charles Kushner, 71, was confirmed in a 51-45 vote.

Kushner is the founder of Kushner Companies, a New York-based real estate company. He was found guilty of preparing a false tax return, retaliation against a cooperative witness, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission in 2005.

He admitted to hiring prostitutes to seduce his stepbrother and videotaping the sexual encounters. He then mailed tapes to his sister to threaten her to become a witness for a federal investigation.

Republican Chris Christie, a US lawyer in New Jersey at the time, said Charles Kushner’s actions were “one of the most disgusting and disgusting crimes.”

Charles Kushner sentenced him to two years in federal prisons and interim programs for more than 16 months prior to his release in 2006, Northjersey.com reported. Trump forgives Charles Kushner in 2020, saying that Kushner was dedicated to charity and causes at the time.

“This record of reform and charity will sentence Kushner to two years in prison for preparing a false tax return, witnessing retaliation and making false statements to the FEC,” Trump’s office said at the time.

In October 2024, Forbes estimated that the Kushner company was worth $2.9 billion and the Kushner family’s net worth was $7.1 billion.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in May, Charles Kushner admitted that he “made a very, very, very serious mistake” and “paid a very heavy price.”

“I think my past mistakes are actually my judgment and I’m entitled to do this job by making my view of life better, my worth better,” he added.

“Charlie understands the unique and enduring bond between the United States and France, rooted in shared history, democratic values and mutual benefits,” said Tennessee Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty.

“He is committed to promoting the national security interests of the United States by deepening the alliance between the United States and France through practical defence cooperation and fair mutual trade relations,” he added.

Jared Kushner, the son of Charles Kushner, has been married to Ivanka Trump since 2009. Jared Kushner served as a senior adviser to Trump during his first term and was a key negotiator for the Abraham Accord, establishing normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and Morocco, Balein, Arab Emirates and Sudan’s Morocco and Morocco.
