Swedish climate and human rights activist Greta Tanberg departed Israel on a flight to France Tuesday after being detained by Israeli forces along with other activists on a Gaza-bound aid ship.

“Greta Samberg just left Israel on a flight to Sweden (via France),” Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote in X’s post along with two photos of young activists on the plane.

The 22-year-old Samberg is a well-known climate activist who has long avoided air travel, famously sailing to a climate conference held in New York in 2019.

At least five fellow crew members who were detained on a Mudline aid ship on Monday were detained on the Mudline aid ship, according to the French Foreign Minister on Tuesday.

“Last night, our consul was able to see six French citizens arrested by Israeli authorities. Their family was contacted. One of them agreed to a voluntary departure and is due to return home today. The other five will be deported.

One of the French citizens detained by Israel on Monday is Lima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry had previously said that anyone who refused to leave Israel by signing deportation documents would approve deportation before the judicial authorities.

The detained crew of aid vessel detained in Gaza that Israel had docked at Israel’s port of Ashdod on Monday morning, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The Madleen is part of the Fleet of Freedom, which opposed Israel’s blockade of Gaza and sought to destroy the siege with boats.

The Freedom Frotilla Union (FFC) said Israeli forces were “attacked” by Madreen and “illegally boarded.” Madreen was about to deliver aid to Gaza, where more than 600 days of war and 11 weeks of Israeli lockdown of all aid pushed 2.1 million people in Enkoleve to the hungry Christies.

Amnesty International also condemned activists’ detention.

“The interception of insanity and operation of the bloc in the middle of the night and in international waters is violating international law and putting the safety of those on boats at risk,” Amnes Caramado, executive director of Amnesty International, said in a statement.

In a statement to CNN, Israel said “in accordance with international law, it is preventing all ships from entering the Gaza Strip.”

Israel repeatedly vowed to stop the aid boat from arriving in Gaza, describing the ship as a “selfie yacht” carrying “celebrities.”

Israel imposed a complete humanitarian blockade in Gaza on March 2, blocking food, medical supplies and other aid to more than 2 million Palestinians living on the territory for 11 weeks.

Facing growing international pressure, Israel began allowing trickle aid in late May. However, humanitarian organisations say that only a portion of aid entered the enclave before the war, warning of an exacerbating humanitarian crisis and the increasing risk of widespread hunger. In late April, one in five people warned that they were facing starvation.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in the past week and are about to get help from a new US aid group that has been asked to provide assistance to Gaza by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The group aims to replace the unused system that distributes aid to Gaza. The United Nations warns that the new distribution mechanism has become a “death trap” for desperate people seeking food on the strip.

Canada will meet NATO military spending guidelines by early next year and diversify defense spending from the US, Prime Minister Mark Carney argued Monday that Washington is no longer playing a major role on the global stage.

The announcement means Canada will achieve NATO spending targets of 2% of its gross domestic product five years ago than previously planned.

“Our military infrastructure and equipment are aging and hindering our military preparation,” Carney said. “Only one of our four submarines is seaworthy. Less than half of our maritime fleet and land vehicles are operating. Even broader, we are too dependent on the US.”

NATO figures show that Canada is estimated to spend 1.45% of its GDP on its military budget, below the 2% target set by NATO countries. Canada previously said it was on track to meet NATO’s targets by the end of the decade.

“Our goal is not to satisfy NATO accountants, but to protect Canadians,” Carney said in a speech at the University of Toronto.

Canada is about to host President Donald Trump and other leaders at the summit of seven major developed countries in Alberta, ahead of the NATO summit in Europe, from June 15-17. NATO allies are poised to increase their commitment well beyond the 2% target.

NATO Executive Director Mark Latte said last week that most NATO US allies were supporting demands that they were ready to invest 5% of their domestic gross product in defense needs and increase security spending even more.

“We meet 2%, and that’s what NATO’s target is today,” Carney said at a later press conference. “We need to spend more,” he said there is debate about the increase in spending at the NATO summit and its timeline.

Kearney says he intends to diversify Canada’s procurement and strengthen national ties with the EU.

“We should no longer send three-quarters of our defense capital expenditures to America,” Carney said in a speech at the University of Toronto. “We will invest in new submarines, aircraft, ships, armed vehicles, artillery, and new radars, drones and sensors to monitor the seabed and Arctic.”

Canada is taking part in EU drives to discuss with the European Union to break security reliance on the US, focusing on purchasing more defense equipment, including fighter jets in Europe. The Kearney government is considering purchasing a US F-35 fighter jet to see if there are other options.

“We were shouldering shoulders with the Americans during the Cold War and the decades that followed, as the United States played a major role on the world stage. Today, that advantage is a thing of the past,” Carney said in French, one of Canada’s official languages.

He said that the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 made the United States a world hegemon, and its strong gravitational gravitational force became practically attractive, making the United States “our closest allies and dominant trading partner.”

“The US is now beginning to monetize its hegemony, charging for access to the market and reducing the relative contribution to collective security,” Carney said.

Trump’s call to make Canada the 51st US province infuriated Canadians, and Carney won the prime minister’s job after promising to stand up to the increased aggression Trump presents.

The Prime Minister said, “The new imperialism is threatening.”

Kearney said the long-standing view that Canada’s geographical location protects Canadians has become increasingly old-fashioned. The government has added $9 billion of Canadians (US$6.6 billion) this year, with Carney saying the Canadian Coast Guard will now become part of the military.

European allies and Canada have already invested heavily in military forces, arms and ammunition since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

China said by the end of the year, all tertiary level hospitals must provide epidural anesthesia during childbirth.

The National Health Commission on China (NHC) said in a statement last week that while epidural services must be provided by 2025, epidural services must be provided by 2025.

Officials are struggling to raise the birth rate of the world’s second-largest economy after China’s population declined for the third consecutive year in 2024, and experts have warned that the recession will worsen in the coming years.

Approximately 30% of pregnant women in China are under anesthesia to relieve pain during childbirth, but in some developed countries, official China’s daily life says, compared to over 70%.

The World Health Organization recommends epidural for healthy pregnant women who demand pain relief, and is widely used in many countries around the world, including France, where around 82% of pregnant women choose one, and more than 67% do in the US and Canada.

The move “improves the level of comfort and security of health services,” and “enhancing people’s well-being and promoting a friendly birth environment,” the NHC said.

Many states across China are also beginning to include birth anesthesia costs as part of their health insurance schemes to encourage more women to have children.

High childcare costs, job uncertainty and economic decline discouraged many young Chinese from getting married and starting a family.

In June, health officials in southwestern Sichuan Province in China proposed extending maternity leave to up to 25 days and up to 150 days to create a “fertility-friendly society.”

When Sana Yousaf turned 17, she posted a video of her birthday celebrations to her over 1 million followers of Tiktok.

They saw her cutting pink and cream cakes under the arch of matching balloons. The June winds disrupt her long hair as she glowed against the cloudy Margara hills of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

Less than 24 hours later, Sana was dead. A bullet from her chest, and graphic images of her corpse on social media in Pakistan have infuriated women all over the country, fearing that there is no safe space in real life or online.

Police are detaining 22-year-old Umar Hayat, unemployed in Faisalabad city over Sana’s murder. Islamabad police inspector Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi claimed that Rizvi “two attempts to contact him repeatedly” and that she killed her when she refused to respond. CNN was unable to find a legal representative for Hayat.

Sana’s father, Said Yousaf Hassan, told CNN there was no word to convey the loss of the family, and his daughter had not said she was being harassed. “My daughter was braveer than her son,” he said. “She was not afraid of anything.”

As Sana’s family prepared for her funeral, intrusive comments began to appear in her Tiktoku and Instagram posts. Read “I’m glad to see these things happening.” Another said, “My heart is happy today, I’m going to turn on the music and dance with joy.”

Under the photo of Sana wearing traditional Pakistani clothing covering her whole body, she commented, “Encouraging young women to look after attention or expose themselves can have serious negative consequences.”

The Digital Rights Foundation (DRF), a women-led nonprofit that promotes online safety, said such rhetoric “has dangerously linked women’s online presence or perceived morality with justification of violence.”

“This form of digital vigilance contributes to a wider culture of victim accusations where abuse is normalised and accountability shifts from perpetrators,” the DRF said in a report released shortly after Sana’s death.

Alongside toxic online comments, Reiji is simmering among women across Pakistan, demanding justice from Sana and pointing to the crisis of masculinity in the South Asian nation.

And Pakistan is not alone in seeing the heated debate over the valence of violence against women.

Latin America’s recent murders have led to digs, including Mexican influencers who were shot dead during live streaming, highlighting high murder rates across the continent.

The British miniseries “Adolescents” became a global hit this year with its online portrayal of misogyny-related damage online, with a recent large Australian study found one in three men who say they committed intimate partner violence at some point in their lives.

Sana’s Tiktok content is familiar to teenagers online. Her recent shorts included showing off her fashion wear, singing songs while driving, and shooting blowdried photos at the salon.

But for a prominent women’s rights campaigner, Sana’s death was the ultimate result of unlimited online abuse of women in patriarchal countries.

Ambharahim Shamsi, a well-known news digital platform journalist and Pakistani editor, says she was mercilessly harassed online in 2020 on a variety of issues, including views on women’s rights.

“I was also stalked online and was frightened when stalkers began sending mugs and photos to my office. I’m just an example among millions of women in every step. Most people don’t have the privilege or social security net to protect themselves.”

Shambu agrees that there is a crisis in masculinity. “Especially about how it unfolds in our digital space.” And what we need to talk about “not just for women, but for men too.”

According to Shamsi, “Social media amplifies the voices of women, especially those of young women, who are increasingly educated, politically aware, and not afraid to own their choices. Confidence is unsettling for some men who have grown to believe in their authority, control.

“It’s an identity crisis,” says Shamsi. “A subset of men responds to anxiety and aggression over this change in gender dynamics, as if it were to reduce the space of women rather than question why so many boys are raised to feel equally threatened.”

The DRF report states that since 2017, the Helpline has “recorded just the number of gender-based violence and online threats in over 20,000 cases, growing numbers.”

Kanwal Ahmed, a Pakistani social entrepreneur and storyteller, runs Soul Sister Pakistan, a Facebook group that gained over 300,000 followers in 2013. For years it has been operating as a popular and safe digital space online for Pakistani women, but Ahmed says criticism of her page is unforgiving.

“We’ve been called the trauma bonding club, who hates men that all women do is gossip,” said Ahmed, who works with volunteers to help women in need who post on their pages.

Sana is not alone when it comes to unnecessary online attention that has moved into real life. Ahmed recalled the lawsuit of a young woman in 2019 who had creeped up a man after a friend leaked her number online.

“The only difference between her and Sana is that she was not killed. The stalker appeared at her door,” Ahmed said. “You don’t have to be an influencer to face this. It happens to everyone.”

Natalia Tarik leads the resource mobilization of the Association of Progressive Communications (APC), a global network of social activists using the internet to make the world a better place, informing CNN that there is a “full culture of immunity” on Pakistan’s online gender-based violence. She said the regulations and policies implemented in the country are “absolutely inadequate.”

In Pakistan, “violence that occurs online is not harmful because it is “not true,” Tarik said. But she added that what is sometimes seen as a “just a virtual” online threat can often turn into physical violence.

Many praise has been raised by Pakistani authorities for the delicate and prompt handling of Sana’s murder, but some commentators say it has missed the point.

Osama Khirj, director of Boro Bee, digital rights advocacy group Boro Bee, says Pakistan should talk about educating boys about online harassment.

“Men in leadership positions need to talk about these issues,” says Kirji.

Khirji said hate speech towards women in Pakistani remains “not a priority and called the government “indicates leadership in fighting online crime against women.”

Sana’s murder comes less than two weeks after the landmark ruling by the country’s Supreme Court that upheld the death penalty of Zahir Jaffer, who killed Noor Mukkadam, the daughter of a prominent diplomat, in 2021.

Brutal beheading terrified the country and updated demands for better protection for victims of gender-based violence.

Noor’s father, Shaukat Mukhadham, has been praised for his relentless campaign for justice for his daughter. After the verdict, Noor’s family issued a statement saying the verdict was “a powerful reminder that women’s lives matter.”

Sana’s father, Hassan, spoke to CNN about the immeasurable love for her daughter, her plans to become a doctor, and the simple things that gave her the joy of a birthday party.

“Every moment with her was unforgettable,” he said.

Russia launched a drone attack in Kiev overnight on Tuesday, with air raid sirens roaring for hours and residents reported that hearing regular explosions caused damage to residents and residential buildings, causing at least two people to be injured.

According to CNN producers, air raid sirens are being blown up as the capital’s local time midnight and air defense systems operate non-stop in the city centre.

Many unmanned aerial vehicles are still reaching the capital, said Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko in the Telegram post. At least two people have been injured in the capital so far, Klitschko added.

Preliminary damages have been reported in Desniansky, Oboronsky and Shevchen Kivsky districts, according to Timur Tokachenko, head of the Kiev city junta.

According to Presidential staff member Andriy Yamak, Russian attacks hit the maternity ward in Odesa’s port city in Odesa, Nangan. Odesa Mayor Hennadi Turkanov said the residential building was also attacked, adding that at least one person was killed based on preliminary reports.

The overnight attack was the biggest drone strike in Ukraine on Monday, following Russia’s biggest drone strike, with Russia firing 479 UAVs in Ukraine in a one-night air attack, surpassing the most drones Moscow launched in one day on its second consecutive weekend.
