At least 21 people were killed on Sunday in an attack on church grounds in eastern Congo by Islamic State-backed rebels.

The attack was carried out by members of the Allied Democrat Forces (ADF) around 1am on the premises of the Catholic Church in Commanda in eastern Congo. Several houses and shops were also burned.

“More than 21 people have been shot dead inside and outside, at least three burnt bodies and several homes burned. But the search continues,” Commanda’s civil society coordinator, Dieudonne Duranthabo, told The Associated Press.

Earlier this month, the group killed dozens of people in Ituri, what a UN spokesman described as a blood band.

A spokesman for the Congolese military in Ituri province, where Comanda is located, confirmed that 10 people have died.

“What we know this morning is that there was an armed man invasion of the church by armed men into a church not far from Commanda, where around ten people were killed, slaughtered and several shops were placed on fire.”

The ADF is a rebel group that has ties to Islamic states and operates in the Uganda-Congo border area, and has routinely engaged in attacks on civilians.

“We’re really disappointed because it’s hard to believe that such a situation could happen in a town with all the security guards,” Duranzabo said. “Some citizens are beginning to flee the area and heading for Bunia.

“The enemy is said to be still close to our town, so we will request military intervention as soon as possible.”

The ADF was formed by different small groups in Uganda in the late 1990s following allegations of complaints with Yoweri Museveni.

Following a military attack by the Ugandan army in 2002, the group moved its activities to nearby DRCs, and has since been responsible for killing thousands of civilians. In 2019, he pledged his loyalty to the Islamic State. ADF leadership considers the Islamic government of the East African country.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) military has long struggled with rebel groups and has been tackling a complex web of attacks since new hostilities among the Rwandan-backed M23s.

Cambodia and Thailand traded fires across the conflict border on Sunday on the fourth day. Hours after President Donald Trump announced that two Southeast Asian countries agreed to a ceasefire talk and that continued fighting threatened to endanger trade deals with Washington.

At least 32 people have been killed and more than 200,000 have been evacuated since Thursday, Thai and Cambodian officials say. In a disgusting clash despite calls from the UN, the US and China to stop calls.

Both sides accused others of starting the latest border flare-up and exchanged responsibility for the ongoing battle.

Hours after Trump’s announcement, Thai government on Sunday said it was “not ready” to halt military operations, accusing Cambodia of continuing to fire heavy artillery at its border and civilian areas of Surin Province, in the border and several other regions.

While Cambodia has “recurringly violated the fundamental principles of human rights and humanitarian law,” it “cannot reach a halt of hostility,” Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Trump said he warned Thai and Cambodia leaders that they would not trade with either country if a fatal border dispute continues.

Thai acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said on Sunday that his country was “thanks” for Trump’s “concerns” while third countries didn’t want mediation.

“We proposed a bilateral relationship between the foreign ministers and concluded the conditions for a ceasefire and a pullback.

A spokesman for Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense told reporters.

According to Lieutenant General Marie Sochieta, some of the projectiles landed near the ancient Plihaa temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in a northern Cambodia province of the same name. The temple complex was at the heart of previous clashes between the two countries.

Cambodia accused Thailand of saying it was a “intentional and planned attack.”

These actions occurred despite efforts that have been publicly and explicitly supported by Cambodia’s Kingdom Prime Minister Hun Mane despite President Donald Trump’s continued efforts to seek a ceasefire,” said Lt. Gen. Marie Sochita.

“Our troops are still actively and aggressively returning and are not afraid to protect the territory,” said Marie Sochita.

Thailand’s national national broadcasting service (NBT) reported that Cambodian troops fired cannons in Surin province, on the Thai border, west of Plier Bihaa, and damaged the home. The Thai army reported that it was responding.

Thailand said on Sunday that 19 people have been killed since the hostilities began, mostly civilians. More than 138,000 have evacuated from six states and are staying in government shelters, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Cambodia said on Saturday that 13 people have been killed and 50 injured in Odal Jeansi province, which crosses the border with Thailand’s Surin. At least 80,000 Cambodia have been forced into combat, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Strongman and the communication billionaire

Thailand and Cambodia relations had been approaching earlier. This is partly thanks to the relationship between two former leaders, Cambodia’s Strongman Hun Sen, and Thai communications billionaire and former prime minister Thaksin Sinawatra.

Neither person has been appointed, but both have a great influence in their respective countries.

Recent Tensions at the border have been simmering ever since the clash occurred in May when Cambodian soldiers were killed. Relations worsened after the release of leaked calls between Thai Prime Minister Paetong Tarun Sinawatra (Taksin’s daughter) and Cambodia’s Hun Sen.

In the call, Paetongtan could be heard calling Hun Sen “uncle” and appeared to criticize the actions of her own military in the border conflict.

Paetongtarn’s comments were nervous in Thailand, with opponents accusing her of compromising the country’s national interests. She defended her actions, but could later be suspended by the Constitutional Court awaiting an ethical review and face dismissal.

Hun Sen later posted Scathing’s comments on Thaksin on Facebook, accusing him of “relying on war, the ultimate outcome of which will be the suffering of people.”

In a post from X, Thaksin accused Hun Sen of ordering Cambodian troops to fire on Thai territory.

President Trump said he spoke on Saturday with both Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Mane and Thai Prime Minister in his efforts to restore peace.

“They agreed to meet soon, and quickly agreed to settle a ceasefire and, ultimately, peace!” Trump wrote about the true society in a series of posts outlined his diplomatic efforts, but did not provide details about the negotiations.

“They also want to go back to the ‘trading table’ with the US. I think this is inappropriate until the battle stops,” Trump wrote.

Earlier this month, Trump wrote to Thailand and Cambodia, threatening tariffs of 36% on most of its exports to the US from August 1st.

Earlier local time on Sunday morning, Hun Mane thanked Trump and said that Cambodia had agreed to a “proposed for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two troops.” He added that he previously agreed to a ceasefire proposal from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

A statement from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been further measured and said he would like to see “honest intentions from Cambodia,” but Phumsam has asked him to “communicate with President Trump.”

Since colonial power France painted borders between them over a century ago, Bangkok and Phnom Penh have fought over contested territory. The new deadly conflict is a longtime ally of a US alliance with decades of experience against Cambodia’s relatively young military forces, and has close ties with China.

The UN has condemned violence, and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for “both sides to immediately agree to a ceasefire and address the issues through dialogue.”

Walls, tall, deadly, three sides of Gaza. Fourth is the ocean, which stretches to the horizon.

The water and the fish in it have a long, nutrient gaza isolated from the outside world.

Today, the beach, along with fishermen who once robbed the banned coast from the Mediterranean, does not provide rest and small shelters for evacuees.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) repeated a security order earlier this month banning Gazan from swimming off the coast.

And as the Israeli army patrols the coast with lethal force, truly desperate courage tries to try and survive another day with just the courage of the waves.

As the world is upset by the image that Israeli actions face international criticism with children of Palestinian skeletal structures, Gazan focuses on finding his next meal.

This ocean has become one of the only food sources for those on the brink of hunger, although now prohibited by Israel.

Despite the risks posed by Israeli navy, some fishermen prefer to put water at risk rather than fatal gunshots in the shadow of aid points.

“There are no other foods, but this is not,” Fisherman Ziyad Abu Amira told CNN. “If I don’t bring it to my kids today, I’ll die.”

“I don’t chase (assistance) trucks. That’s how I do it,” he said.

Even scrap fish has become a meal for some. The 7-year-old Pheaza’s voice is small as it offers a bite that has been cleaned from the fishing net.

“I’m waiting for the fishermen to leave the sea and give me some. I’m coming every day and getting a little bit back and coming back,” she told CNN.

Plus along the beach, 8-year-old Hussam Saadalla is an unlikely earner for nine relatives.

He would go out into shallow waters on a net made with a friend and occasionally catch small fish. “We’re throwing the net because we want to eat,” he told CNN.

“I’m always afraid of naval ships once the naval ships get a little deeper.”

When the humanitarian crisis reaches a new low, Gazan enters water risk deaths from Israeli boats and aircraft.

Even before 2023, fishermen risked being killed, shot and detained by Israeli forces for wandering far away from the coast.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that since Israel began the Israeli war more than 21 months ago, most fishing boats have been destroyed, targeting fishing just a few metres from the coast.

After the IDF issued its latest dict decree on the Palestinians, “were back two days later,” Fisherman Ziyad Abu Amira told CNN that he was in the net. “You can’t see kids getting hungry.”

For years, Gazan had no free access to this precious natural resource. Israeli restrictions on fishing activities have fluctuated in tensions with Hamas, with limits of just three voyage miles and sometimes even previous total bans on fishing.

These limitations of navigation were directly correlated with the catches available to Gazan fishermen in deep waters.

According to the United Nations, Gaza fishermen produced about 4,660 tonnes of catch each year prior to the attack on October 7th.

Fisheries support the local community economically, “providing a key source of protein for the Gazan population and will greatly contribute to poverty alleviation and resilience against food insecurity,” the United Nations said in a report from May 2025.

Today, after Israeli forces almost completely destroy the infrastructure of Gazan’s fishing fleet and fish farms, its yield is now only 60 tons, with the farms not fully operational, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The United Nations says Gaza’s fishing industry currently works at just 7.3% of its prewar production capacity.

The Mediterranean was also the site of some of the most well-known international initiatives mediating on Gazan’s behalf. In 2010, a fleet of civilian ships with assistance from Türkiye tried to break the blockade.

Israeli commanders stormed the ship, killing nine Turkish activists, prompting an onslaught of global criticism. Earlier this year, climate activist Greta Samberg was detained by Israeli forces in a largely symbolic attempt to reach the Gazan coast with aid ship.

However, water still has little comfort to Gaza.

16-year-old Ismail Al Amoudi comes from a fisherman’s family. He now sees the waves differently.

“Everyone is afraid to go to the sea,” he told CNN. “We see death right in front of us.”

Wore her short hair and showless clothes, Hwang Chunli shows a middle-aged Chinese countryside woman to everyone. She stands out amidst crowds of young people competing for becoming the next breakout star in one of China’s most popular stand-up comedy contests.

However, when the 50-year-old takes the microphone, she shines in life, dripping with sarcasm and drops down a joke about her abusive ex-husband who makes the audience a mixture of laughter and tears.

Fans from places who know how to use the internet simply “turn to Elon Musk in my village” are the latest sensations in the booming scene of China, an art form that provides outlets of grievances in countries that often thwart public debates in politics and society.

However, fans Aselvik took over patriarchy, domestic abuse is wary of some Chinese officials, and women’s rights remain a sensitive issue. The dominant Communist Party is trying to raise fertility rates and stop the looming demographic crisis. It cracked down heavily on the country’s early feminist movements.

During the performance that famously shot her earlier this month, fans exposed the absurdity facing many victims of domestic violence in the country.

She said she was beaten by her ex-husband. However, when she told her parents she wanted a divorce, her father warned her not to bring any disgrace to her family.

“When a man is involved in domestic violence, that’s not shameful. When a woman demands divorce, that’s not shameful,” she said.

The fan’s performance appears to be regretting at least one local government.

Last week, after footage of her routine became word-of-mouth, officials from Zhijiang Eastern Province issued a warning that such jokes were “catalysts that cause gender conflicts.”

The statement did not directly name the fans or the show in question that it is only hinted at by newcomers called “the industry gems,” namely newcomers called nicknames given by the show’s judges.

“The content of some talk shows gradually deviate from the nature of humor, simplifying gender issues and repeatedly fussing about “opposition between men and women.” The state does not have specific links to fans or television shows, but the department occasionally posts commentary on recent trends.

He said that discussions on gender issues should be “rational.”

The Chinese government has cracked down on feminist activities over the past decade. Most notably, a group of women who became known as the “Feminist Five” were arrested after planning a public transport protest against sexual harassment in 2015.

However, while authorities allow mild discussions on social media, films featuring feminist themes continue to screen without issue.

However, fan backgrounds – state backgrounds, not wealthy or highly educated – may contribute to official uncertainty over her popularity, adding an extra layer of scrutiny.

“She is a middle-aged woman from a rural background and is not one of the typical urban liberal elite feminists,” said Meng Bingchun, a communications professor studying feminism at the London School of Economics (LSE).

“This seems to indicate this type of grievance and complaints related to gender issues, as well as the traditional Confident, patriarchal values, perhaps more widespread than they (the authorities) want to acknowledge,” she told CNN.

Traditional social codes can be as strict as government dictatts. Late last year, Chinese e-commerce giant JD faced a boycott by customers who were upset by the cast of pioneering female comedian Yang Li in a live stream of promotions.

The people leading the action seemingly still stabbed by Quip, a signature by Yang five years ago, making the mediocre man chi.

Sudden to online backlash, the company apologized and cut ties with Yang.

Fans have never publicly identified themselves as feminists. However, in a post on online platform Weibo, she writes that she believes that leaving social constraints in rural life could lead to “women’s awakening.”

“For example, when I say I want to divorce in my village, I am considered a ruthless villain,” she writes.

“But when you talk about divorce outside, the audience applauds.”

Growing up away from major Chinese cities, she had no formal education until she was eight years old. However, it soon ended after middle school.

Growing up in a time when opportunities were mostly for men, she remembered picking up work in the city before getting married, and her mother handed her brother all the money she had sent home.

“A girl who grew up in a rural village has no right to inherit anything, not a home, not a land,” she told Sanrian. “At the time… I just wanted to get married.”

However, after getting married, she discovers that “family and marriage are trapped by women, making it impossible for them to make money.”

For fans, life before stand-up was cleaning jobs in an obscure village in Shandong, northeastern China’s northeastern province.

Her path to stardom began with an unlikely twist.

In 2023, having a hard time interacting, she remembered selling her jewellery and watching her idol perform, state media reported.

On the show, she was supposed to be roasted during the improvised segment, but the witty response of fans impressed performers who decided to introduce the fans to the trade, she said.

Fans have gained a lot of experience when it comes to divorce, when it comes to thinking about themselves for over 20 years.

“When my eldest daughter was born, I was already thinking about getting divorced,” she told Sanrian.

The mother of two described her ex-husband as a gambler, but her absence made her care for her sick stepfather alone. She also enjoyed his sleazy manners and said he ate the popular Chinese rice cultivation directly from the ladle.

At one point, her ex-husband and his father beat her badly, she claimed that her face was covered in bruises. She goes home and tells her parents that she wants to get divorced, but only gets her mother deterred and tells her to break up the relationship only if he is cheating.

The last straw came when she caught her husband once more concealing his bones and mouth shaking a year or two ago. “This time,” she recalled thinking, “I’ll leave without looking back.”

By then, fans were already based on comedy performances, with a slot in the local comedy club. After leaving her husband, she decided to make the stand-up a real shot to admit both of the two homes and get him to agree to divorce.

During her viral performance, she moved from innocent voluntary to roasting her ex-husband’s full throttle.

“How difficult is it for a country aunt to come to town for work for the first time?” she asks.

She then thought of her current misery.

“I glanced at my husband by my side and thought, ‘I’m not scared of this challenge.’ ”

Apart from her marriage, she was also open about other taboo picks aimed at Chinese women, including many marginalized biological realities.

Focusing on her new, later stardom, she said, “My menopause comes with my debut,” unlike many women who retire when the period stops.

Fans spoken by CNN are rooting for the rise in the Chinese women’s comedy scene and oppose Z Jiang authorities’ warnings against “gender opposition.”

Zhang Yuanqi said he saw a show with his mother and fan who left the same abusive home 10 years ago.

She said that comedians like fans are not trying to stir up ‘gender opposition’. They’re just turning life experiences into jokes.”

“What we want to hear is our own lives,” she said.

Huang Xueao, a 21-year-old university student, said:

Fans touched on the issues women encounter daily, adding that they couldn’t understand local government warnings. “They are telling us to stop. What is behind the authorities’ thoughts?” added Huang. Huang said he wanted to see his mother perform his fans in person.

LSE Meng said the Chinese government is working to understand this new form of entertainment. While this may explain a cautious approach, warnings from Z Jiang authorities are unlikely to bring further results to fans.

As of Sunday, fans’ Weibo accounts remain active (deactivation is one of the first signs that performers have violated Chinese censorship devices) – several posts have removed the railing against the official veiled warning.

For rising performers, comedy is not just a new career, but a way to gain catharsis.

“My biggest change since I started doing stand-up comedy is that I no longer get mad at every move my ex-husband,” fans told Sanrian.

“There’s a sense of reconciliation.”

Israel’s far-right national security minister condemned the government’s decision to increase humanitarian assistance to Gaza, calling it a “subordination to Hamas” and said it was removed from deliberation.

“On Saturday night, I was informed by a source from the Prime Minister’s Office that security consultations had been held without me during Shabbat,” Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote on social media on Saturday night.

Shabbat is the day of Jewish rest that falls on Saturday. During the Sabbath, observer Jews usually refrain from work outside of emergency.

Israeli forces announced on Saturday that humanitarian aid would enter Gaza and open corridors to suspend combat operations in certain areas.

Ben Gwil has spoken out about pushing for war in Gaza and has consistently opposed a ceasefire with Hamas.

He would call the decision “subord”, putting Israeli soldiers in danger and delaying the return of the remaining hostages.

Some contexts: Israel imposed an 11-week lockdown on all aid to the strip, beginning in March, and eventually resumed distribution in late May through the controversial US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

According to the United Nations, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in an attempt to access aid in a month, and aid groups have warned that “mass hunger” is spreading throughout Gaza.

Israeli forces intercepted Handara, a Gaza-bound ship carrying aid and activists on Saturday night, within 70 nautical miles of their destination.

“The occupation has disabled our cameras and all communication has been lost,” a spokesman for the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) told CNN in a message.

A live stream on YouTube showed armed personnel on board the ship, but all the activists on the deck were wearing life jackets, surrendering and holding their hands in the air. One of the helmet reps appears to be operating the camera streaming on the deck and turning around. The stream ended immediately afterwards.

In a statement from X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that “the Israeli Navy has used Handara’s original name to “stop the Israeli Navy from entering illegally into the maritime zone on the coast of Gaza.”

“The ship is safely heading towards the Israeli coast. All passengers are safe,” the statement continued. “Illegal attempts to violate the lockdown are dangerous, illegal and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.

Named after a famous Palestinian cartoon character, the handler is part of the FFC, who has attempted multiple times to break Israeli blockade in Gaza through the sea, where he has attempted to reach Palestinians with assistance.

It is equipped with two members of French and European parliament and American trade union member Christian Small, according to the FFC.

“The unarmed boat carried life-saving supplies when boarded the Israeli army. Passengers were accused and cargo was seized,” the FFC said in a statement issued shortly after the livestream ended.

The statement added that supplies include “formuld milk, diapers, food and medicine.”

Hours before the ship was intercepted, the FFC issued a statement that the handlers were piloting towards Egypt to avoid boarding.

Handala’s journey to Gaza is just over a month after another ship from the Fleet of Freedom, the Madreen, was intercepted in a similar way on his way to the enclave.

The ship, which was also crewed by a group that includes climate activist Greta Samberg, was carrying assistance. Israeli authorities tow the ships to Ashdod, and then all were deported from Israel.

On Saturday evening, the crew on Handala deck were seen wearing reflective life jackets after telling Australian volunteer Tania Safi in a voice memo to CNN that the ship was “surrounded by Israeli Heron drones.”

CNN is unable to verify the claim and has contacted Israeli authorities for comment.

“Everyone here is prepared for almost every possible scenario that Israel can pass us through,” Safi said Saturday afternoon. “If they intercept us, it would be a violation of international maritime law.”

The FFC says on their website that 19 Handara activists and two journalists came from many countries, including Australia, the UK and Italy. Norwegian Foreign Ministry told CNN it knows that Norwegian citizens are on board the ship.

According to the FFC, the handler is a US citizen on the four ships. CNN contacted the US State Department for comment.

On Thursday, a State Department spokesman called the activist aid ship “selfie fleet” and dismissed the effort as a stunt. “The latest ‘Selfie Fleet’ should end the stunts,” the spokesman said. “The real story is the serious people who risked their lives to get food and help the people of Gaza without being in the hands of terrorists.”

A spokesperson added that the State Department “is a higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens,” and that details were introduced to the Israeli government.

Taipei, Taiwan (AP) – Taiwanese voters reject a bid that around a fifth of lawmakers will be kicked out of the opposition nationalist party in Saturday’s recall election, hoping the ruling party will flip the balance of power in the island’s self-emitted island parliament.

The dominant Democrat Progressive Party, which has a tendency to independence, won last year’s presidential election, but the Chinese-friendly nationalist, also known as the KMT, and the smaller Taiwan People’s Party, have enough seats to form a majority.

Official preliminary results showed that the recall effort could not be removed by any of the two dozen KMT lawmakers. The scale of the recall election is unprecedented, with seven more KMT lawmakers facing similar votes on August 23rd.

KMT currently holds 52 seats, while the dominant DPP holds 51 seats. For the DPP to secure a legislative majority, it will need to expel at least six KMT lawmakers, and the ruling party will need to win the by-election, which must be held within three months of the announcement of the results.

For a recall to pass, at least a quarter of eligible voters in a district must vote in favor of it, and the total number of supporters must exceed the voters.

Voting closed at 4pm local time. Taiwan’s Central Election Commission will release its official results on August 1st.

If the results of next month’s polls are also at a disadvantage for the DPP, that means that Taiwan’s government president Lai Ching-Te can continue to face strong resistance from within Congress before the election is expected to take place in 2028.

KMT Chairman Eric Chu told reporters that voters have used the vote to prove that Taiwan’s democracy is mature and that they are seeking an apology from LAI.

“All Taiwanese people chose stability and chose that the government should focus on getting things done rather than engage in a fierce political battle,” he said.

Lev Nachmann, a professor of political science at National Taiwan University, said despite their great efforts, those who support the recall faced a “difficult battle” in trying to free lawmakers in the organized and powerful KMT district.

As a result, it will make it even more difficult for Lai to move his agenda forward, especially ahead of next year’s local elections, said Nachman, a Taiwanese election expert.

“At this point there’s little LAI can do other than try to think of other creative ways that LAI would appeal to the public,” he told The Associated Press.
