US stock futures are mixed after being narrowly mixed as investors trimmed expectations for a reduction in the Federal Reserve rate at the heels of inflation reports that are hotter than expected.

The producer’s price index, which measures wholesale prices, rose 0.9% from June and has not changed since June. This exceeded the 0.2% of economists voted by Dow Jones’s most profits and the 0.2% of economists and monthly maximum profits expected since June 2022. The jump is due to tariffs, the economist said.

Before the market opens, investors will see retail sales in July for clues as to whether consumer spending is slowing.

At 6:20am on ET, futures tied to the Blue Chip Dow increased by 0.59%, S&P 500 futures added 0.03%, and high-tech Nasdaq futures fell by -0.19%.

How President Trump has accumulated over recent approval ratings

0

play

President Donald Trump’s support among Americans has fallen to nearly record low in the new national survey released in the last 30 days, which Trump gave him a low mark.

A Pew Research Center survey found that the president has dropped three points over the past two months, with a 38% approval rate, nine points from the early February vote. Over half (60%) say they disapprove of his work performance. Pew pollers believe it will decline to “a combination of decline in approval among 2024 supporters and adults who didn’t vote in November.”

The Pew survey was conducted on August 4-10 of 3,554 adults with an error of ±1.8 percentage points.

This is the latest in a series of national surveys released in the past month that gave Trump’s record numbers, following a 37% approval from the Gallup vote on July 7-21 and a 40% approval rate from the Reuters/ISPO vote at the end of the month. Gallup’s historical analysis shows that Trump’s first July approval rating for both conditions is lower than that of other modern presidents.

Recent approval voting aggregations from the New York Times and RealClearpolitics have disapproved by 53% and 51% as of August 14, with Trump’s approvals from 44% to 45%, respectively.

Here is a summary of other recent polls:

YouGov/Economist Poll

  • 42% will approve
  • 54% disapproved

More than half of those surveyed said in a YouGov/Economist poll that the country is on the wrong track and is unhappy with how American democracy works.

When asked about Texas’s constituency change crisis, opinions were also low when it plagued the Lone Star nation for nearly two weeks and sparked competition between Democrats and Republicans in other states to redraw their own congressional maps. Over 2/3, the response was more mixed when asked if another party should be allowed to redraw their maps, although they said that partisan gerrymandering should not be allowed. Another 36% said they were unsure.

The vote took place between 1,635 US adults from August 9th to 11th. There is an error of ±3.5 percentage points.

Morning polls

  • 45% will approve
  • 51% disapproved

Trump’s approval rate remains low in the second term in the morning consultation survey, following similar figures from the previous week. However, there was a slight increase in economic approval, with voters disapproving Trump’s economic handling and trade with a 1-point margin.

The vote took place between August 8th and 10th among 2,200 registered US voters. There is an error of ±2 percentage points.

CNBC Voting

  • 46% will approve
  • 51% disapproved

Of the seven issues, Trump’s handling of inflation and cost of living received the lowest ratings in the poll. 37% were approved, and 60% have changed since the April survey, falling five points from the start of the year.

Opinions on tax and federal spending were also underwater, with 40% and 38% approvals, respectively, followed by 41% approvals on the president’s foreign policy. Trump’s position on the southern border with Mexico was the most popular in the survey, collecting 53% positive responses, but deportation and tariffs reached a majority threshing with approval of 49% and 45% respectively.

The vote was conducted by Hart Research Associates/Public Opinion Strategies from July 29th to August. Three out of three adults. There is an error of ±3.1 percentage points.

Deepseek: A Chinese startup to challenge Silicon Valley

0

Market turmoil and shockwaves through Silicon Valley marked the launch of Chinese startup Deepseek, challenging some of the basic assumptions of how artificial intelligence companies operated and expanded.

In less than a few years, the Beijing-based newcomer has accomplished what many think could not be possible. Create AI models that compete with industry giants, speculating just a few of the budget instructional models and answers from competitors.

The impact of the release was immediate and measurable. According to the South China Morning Post, major tech stocks, including Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta, experienced a significant decline as investors have been working on the impact of Deepseek’s existence.

The free AI assistant application for IOS and Android, launched on January 10th, quickly climbed to the top spot of Apple’s US App Store, replacing Openai’s ChatGpt, marking the historic one of China’s AI products in the US market.

What makes this particularly important is Deepseek’s technical approach. Algorithm Bridge reports that the company is implementing several innovative solutions, including multi-head potential attention (MLA) to reduce memory bottlenecks and group relative policy optimization (GRPO).

This advancement allows DeepSeek to achieve results comparable or superior to its US competitors, while using significantly fewer resources. The company’s resource efficiency is impressive. Deepseek will run on under 100,000 H100 GPUs, and Meta will deploy 1.3 million GPUs by the end of 2025.

Efficiency extends beyond hardware. The algorithm bridge suggests that Deepseek’s approach represents a 10x improvement in resource utilization when considering factors such as development time and infrastructure costs.

However, the rapid rise in Western user awareness is not without challenges. South China Morning Post Deepseek’s sudden popularity has led to significant infrastructure stress, and as a result, server crashes and cybersecurity concerns have been forced to temporarily restrict registration. Growing pain highlights the real-world challenges of scaling AI services regardless of building efficiency.

The company’s commitment to open source development and research transparency is in stark contrast to the secret approach of major US high-tech companies. For many industry observers, open and localhost AI could be the blueprint for prioritized deployment.

The company has won praise from prominent figures in the tech industry, including venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, who described Deepseek’s development as “one of the most amazingly impressive breakthroughs.”

The political implications of events are important. US President Donald Trump characterized the emergence of “walking calls” and deepshek in the US industry, reflecting broader concerns about technological competition between the US and China. He continues to fight China’s competition in technology and imposes restrictive tariffs that have affected every corner of the world.

However, the situation transcends simple national competition and represents the fundamental challenges to established thinking regarding AI development.

A few important questions remain in the future. Can DeepSeek’s efficient approach scale meet growing demand? Has established players adapted their strategies with effective responses? Chinese companies have demonstrated that algorithm efficiency and open collaboration can replace raw computational power and secrets as key factors in AI advancements.

The disruption in the AI market could ultimately benefit the entire field by forcing a reassessment of established practices, leading to more efficient and accessible ways of developing AI.

While Deepseek’s achievements have been surprising since diving into public consciousness, it is important to note that the volatility in the high-tech sector market remains high as the largest US high-tech companies are unlocking their own advancements.

What is clear is that Deepseek has introduced a viable alternative to the capital-intensive approach that dominates AI development. Whether this will become the new industry standard or simply one of many successful strategies is still unknown, but the company’s impact on the industry is already important.

Crime has fallen by 20% in Chicago. Why is Trump threatening to break in?

0

The Democratic mayor says they have managed to lower crimes despite President Trump’s attack on cities as dangerous and out of control.

play

WASHINGTON – Talking about crime has long been Achilles’ heels for Democrats, who have continued to struggle with issues at the national level during Donald Trump’s second term, despite data showing that violence is declining in major U.S. cities.

But with Trump deploying National Guard in cities like Los Angeles and more recently Washington, D.C., changing public perceptions of crime are essential for parties going on after the 2026 midterm elections.

There could be places like Baltimore or Chicago next, the president hinted. Mayors of those cities say they are ready to fight back by showing them, rather than telling them how their cities reduced crime.

“We’re the closest to people,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told USA Today. “We are those who are proven by our results, and we are people who know how to communicate in a way that people understand.”

The administration’s militarized crackdown in the country’s capital presents Trump’s liberal enemies with a key test as a national figure who has grasped a variety of messages to counter Trump’s rhetoric and executive actions, including toes in the president’s shadow primary in 2028.

Some have cast his claims about crime as a “distraction,” while others have warned that the deployment of the National Guard is a step towards “authoritarianism.”

“He’s just gotten warm in Los Angeles. He lights his path to militarizing every city he wants in America. That’s what the dictator is doing,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in an August 11 post on X.

Other party leaders prefer to highlight how much crime is coming in these urban areas.

I don’t speak the numbers loudly

But strategists and experts warn that the way Democrats dropped out in the 2024 election will pose a risk of appearing deaf by simply citing data and statistics.

“I opposed going to statistics – it would feel like a gaslight to some voters.

But without a clear national figure, the challenge would fall primarily into Democratic mayors, some of whom emphasized that their cities were fighting violence well.

They said their party must apply the lessons they have learned since 2024 and show voters that the metropolitan area is not a crime-filled hell hole.

Mayor takes the lead by highlighting policies that make cities safer

Democrats “have to stop being afraid” to talk about fighting crime, Scott said.

It starts with forcing the fight against the GOP’s claims by highlighting personal stories, coupled with important investments that help reduce crime rates, the mayor said.

“Share the facts until your face turns blue,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City, Missouri.

For example, Vera Institute’s Advocacy Arm Vera Action rated the GOP spending more than $1 billion attacking Democrats on crime and immigration in 2024, with Democrats spending around $319 million on ads featuring public safety records.

“We missed Mark, and now it’s time to snatch the bulls ourselves and talk about the good work we’re doing as mayor,” said Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, president of the Democratic Mayor’s Association. “This is a story we can win.”

However, it will be difficult to resonate with voters. Experts say many Americans see crime through what they see in their neighborhoods and local television news rather than through academic research or government reports.

It was a big issue for Democrats as the party adapted to Trump’s electric style.

In the 2024 exit vote, Trump outperformed Kamala Harris with five points on the issue of crime. He hammered former California Attorney General and San Francisco District Attorney as soft in violence, making misleading claims about the amount of crimes she and former President Joe Biden had while in office.

According to the FBI, violent crime fell by an estimated 3% nationwide in 2023 and a 4.5% decrease in 2024. Crime continues to decline in most categories in a July study from the Criminal Justice Council.

Some of the cities that have been called by Trump – all black mayors – have seen a serious decline in crime. They attribute some reductions to investments in youth programs and other policing alternatives.

Cleveland Mayor Bibb said he spoke to DNC Chairman Ken Martin and other party leaders. They have the same mindset. Democrats must flood the country with what they are doing to improve public safety.

A few days before Trump gained control of Washington, D.C., the DNC cut the eight-minute video – called “Mayor s-t done” – featuring Bibb, showing off crime prevention programs across the country that reduced murder, expanded affordable housing and expanded homelessness.

“The data is one thing, but it makes sure people feel and recognize the safety of the city. That’s what we’re focusing in Cleveland, and I know my counterparts around the country are focusing as well,” Bibb said.

He said murders had fallen by 30% in Cleveland earlier in the year.

Democrats say it’s a distraction

Democrats with higher political aspirations don’t concentrate their messages too much on crime. Instead, the threat of Trump’s deployment to DC and doing so elsewhere is distracting from unpopular parts of his tenure, such as Republican tax cuts and Jeffrey Epstein’s case file.

“Let’s not lie to the public,” Illinois Gov. JB Pretzker, who is full of hope for 2028, said in an August 11 post in response to Trump. “You and I know you don’t have the right to take over Chicago. By the way, where is the Epstein File?”

With about 800 guard members moving across Washington, D.C., Trump vowed that his efforts would become a “crime-free” city.

“This will be a beacon and it will also serve as an example of what can be done,” Trump said on August 13th.

He told reporters earlier this week that “other cities are looking hopefully,” resulting in a “self-purification.”

But in some metropolitan areas that have already begun. As the Department of Justice itself announced in January, total crimes of violent crime in Washington, D.C. in 2024 fell 35% from the previous year.

And in Chicago, a long-standing example of Republican outrage, violent crime has fallen 22% compared to the same period last year. This year, 110 murders were seen than in the same period in 2024.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, who took office in 2023, lives on the west side of Chicago, where shootings and other violence were tragic. He said he understands why some residents feel crime.

“I was the first mayor in Chicago’s history and woke up in one of Chicago’s least invested communities, where trauma and violence are widespread and at the same time experience a decline in violence,” the 49-year-old mayor told USA Today.

“So, I realize that this film doesn’t necessarily keep up with people’s feelings, but it doesn’t take away the work we did,” he said.

In Chicago, for example, the Johnson administration invested $40 million in July to modernize homeless shelters. He also promotes other initiatives, such as the Peacekeeping Forces Program. This is a $34.5 million state-funded effort to train residents to eliminate community conflict.

Johnson said he would do everything possible “to ensure that our constitutional rights are protected,” and suggested legal action if Trump complies with his threat to the city of wind.

“We must stand firm and stand up to this tragic president’s tyrannical rule,” he said.

Crime also fell in Los Angeles when Trump ordered the National Guard in June to help quell the anti-abolition protests. The city has the lowest murders in 60 years, and gang violence is declining.

The deployment of security guards to Los Angeles was “completely unnecessary,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in an interview.

“In Los Angeles, our city had 4,000 national security guards and women. They had no connection at all. Of those, 100 guarded two buildings, 200 of the 4,000 people, and the rest did nothing.

Whether Trump is able to replicate the development may depend on the outcome of a case currently in front of a California court. The state is suing Trump for his National Guard deployment.

Polling shows that at least the public is on the side of local officials when it comes to allegations of overreach in enforcement.

A Kinipiac poll conducted in late June found voters disapproved between 55% and 43% of Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in Los Angeles.

“And Just That” series finale downs Carrie Bradshaw

0

play

Spoiler alert! The next story includes details about the series finale of “Sex and the City” sequel, and such…” (currently streaming on HBO Max).

You know that old biblical verse: “You prepare a table before me in front of my enemies. My toilets run.”

It’s very similar to the finale of the series “And Just That’s…”. This launched an unholy scatology war against her beloved Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). Instead, Carrie’s holiday is filled with revolving doors for the haughty art dealer and General Z Queerdos.

A magical land called Manhattan, this is not the case.

In some respects, it’s the right thing to end for “And just like that…”, and in three seasons we’ve found an incredible new way to humiliate and torture our “sex and city” heroines. Are you sure the entire episode dedicated to Charlotte (Kristin Davis) in the Dog Park? Send meteors. Does Carrie hear Aidan masturbate on the truck after imposing a five-year break to focus on the kids? Virginia isn’t bad enough – really, he takes him to The Hague.

Like the faithful piggy waiting for their slops, we each week looked into what fresh hell had for these once subtle characters, sparkling like a fresh pair of manoloes during the HBO’s “Sex and the City” run between 1998 and 2004. “Sex” was a rare show where you could tackle the twists of infertility and exhibitionism in the same breath. They never spoke to the audience or judged the central foursome. (Kim Cattrall, who played Va-Va-voom Samantha in greed, wisely sat in the sequel series.)

On the other hand, “And just like that…” couldn’t understand what it wanted to be. The original cast is whiter than Miley Cyrus’ veneer, and creator Michael Patrick King attempted to fix it by adding new characters that are racially and sexually diverse. However, despite the best efforts of Sarita Choudhury (Seema) and Nicole Ari Parker (as Lisa), their sole ring storylines did not contain logic or depth. At the very least, we always have memories of Choi Diaz (Sara Ramirez) and their comedy concerts.

Even worse, I was saddened by my husband, Mr. Big (Chris Noss) for the entire first season. Instead, the writers drove her past and just rehashed their upsurged res and uncertainty, wasting the next two seasons in a stagnant relationship with Aidan.

In the series finale, Carrie discovers she confronts her singles and asks herself, “Who am I the only one?” That’s a valuable question: According to a 2020 survey by the Pew Research Center, 29% of women between the ages of 50 and 64 are single. That number jumps to 49% for women over the age of 65. And just like that… “I had the opportunity to show the pain and glory of a single life of a woman like Carrie, who was the once witty, wide-eyed coat of arms for a woman like Carrie.

Instead, the final episode is largely condescending to the circumstances of Carrie’s relationship with sympathy. When she arrives at the Chinese restaurant, the server “you don’t have to eat alone” a gorgeous doll in the seat across from her. On Thanksgiving Day, she goes from door to door to deliver the pie to the closest companion. It’s a shame Carrie actually spends the entire episode in a stranger’s company for a show that has long claimed that all you really need is your best girlfriend.

You have to stop thinking of being “probably a man.” And I’m probably just starting to accept me,” Carrie tells Charlotte early in the episode. “It’s not a tragedy, it’s a fact.” And in the final scene of the series, Carrie eats dessert alone in the kitchen, before dancing around her spongy townhouse with Barry White’s “You’re the first, the last, all of me.”

It’s a sweet feeling of narcissism, but something that feels too tacked and hastily written to stuff an emotional wallop. And by knowing and loving Carrie for nearly 30 years, she was far better than this sturdy, distinctive sendoff.

On August 1st, when King announced “And just like that…” Parker wrote a long tribute on social media, tore me apart, capturing the wild and wonderful whimsicality of our cosmo shipping fashionistas amid her beautiful mess. “Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years,” the actress wrote. “I think I loved her more than anything else.”

You can wash away the rest. That’s how you can remember “sex and the city.”

Apple iOS 26 update may bring game-changing features to CarPlay

0

Apple Carplay is about to get a transformative new feature.

play

  • Apple’s iOS 26 update allows users to have new CarPlay features.
  • CarPlay is looking to acquire something even more attractive with one high demand feature.

Apple Carplay completely transforms the driving experience for iPhone owners.

CarPlay Connectivity allows iPhone users to link their smartphone to the vehicle’s infotainment system via a wired or wireless connection. The system gives you access to convenient apps for navigation, music streaming, podcast streaming and more.

Apple Carplay and Android Auto have received several updates over the years, making it a more integral part of the modern driving experience for many drivers. Apple’s upcoming Carplay updates could be an absolute game changer due to these new features.

Apple Carplay will debut a new feature in September, Apple Blog says

According to the popular Apple news site 9TO5MAC, Apple’s iOS 26 update has many new features for CarPlay. Everything from the appearance to the available widgets, apps and features has been upgraded.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xlfp4kbaq0

One of the many new features is Apple’s liquid glass design for backgrounds and wallpapers. This will give CarPlay a fresh new look that is more reflective of the iOS 26 update. Style upgrades are just the beginning when it comes to the new CarPlay features.

Another major new feature is the introduction of widgets to standard carplay. Apple users will be able to quickly access widgets from installed apps via the vehicle’s infotainment system. This feature allows CarPlay to be more capable in terms of what can be viewed, allowing drivers to quickly use more iPhone shortcuts from the vehicle’s touchscreen.

Perhaps the most impactful upcoming feature is AirPlay, a feature that supports in-vehicle video for standard car play. This allows drivers and residents to enjoy the video through the car’s infotainment system when the vehicle is parked. This is a game changer. This is because only some brands, such as Tesla, host infotainment video streaming capabilities before iOS 26.

Why IOS 26 could be revolutionary for Apple Carplay

One of the biggest advantages of CarPlay’s video streaming capabilities is the increased charging experience for EV owners. Once deployed, non-Tesla EV owners using CarPlay can, like Tesla owners, watch the video on their infotainment screens while their cars are charging.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqipt1l9okq

This feature essentially becomes “smarter” regardless of how modern or outdated the native infotainment system is. As the vehicle is more tech-reliant and software-centric, Apple’s decision to upgrade standard carplay makes sense.

Carplay Ultra takes things to a completely different level, allowing Apple’s unique user interface to dominate the vehicle display via infotainment and digital instrumental cluster screens. Standard Carplay isn’t that far yet, but it certainly evolves with every iteration and is becoming a typical part of the modern driving experience for iPhone users.

How Apple plans to fight distracting driving on iOS26

Incorporating video streaming into CarPlay raises obvious safety concerns. After all, moving around with your favorite shows or engaging new movies can be miserable. Thankfully, Apple designed a feature that automatically pauses video playback when a connected iPhone detects motion, according to PCMAG.

Therefore, streaming video content is reserved for restricted drivers and residents, safely parked for those attempting to stream and drive. As infotainment systems become increasingly attractive, Apple and Android need to remember to remember that they are safe as both software developers will introduce new features.

That said, both Apple Carplay and Android Auto have had a major impact on the way drivers interact with their vehicles. According to 9to5mac, the new Carplay update is scheduled to be rolled out in September.

Alaska is the “strategic” location of the Trump Putin Summit

0

Among other benefits, Alaska is a safe place for Putin, a prosecuted war criminal, to fly.

play

Why Alaska? After all, the state known as the last frontier is not a typical breeding ground for international diplomacy. But that’s where President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin mutually agreed to meet on August 15th.

The meeting will take place at Elmendorf-Richardson’s site, a vast joint base in Anchorage. The base is thousands of miles from both the White House and the Kremlin, on a land that once belonged to Russia.

However, Alaska itself is preparing to play an increasing role at the global stage as climate change opens new shipping routes near the Arctic as Russia, China and the US compete for control.

The Republican Alaska Senator said in a statement that choosing Alaska is natural. His hometown is “the most strategic place in the world.”

The United States persuaded Alaska from Russia in 1867, what was called “Seward’s foolishness” by then Secretary of the Interior William Seward, and today’s $160 million worth of Congress.

Trump has visited Alaska several times as president, where he called for expansion of oil, gas and mining permits, and even funded a new extreme icebreaker, a popular stance in the state that won 54% of the vote in 2024.

The face-to-face meeting between the men was called a “listening exercise” by White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.

“The goal of this conference for the President is to leave with a better understanding of how this war can be ended,” Leavitt told reporters at an August 12 news briefing.

A safe space for Putin

Historians and political scientists say the place offers a surprising variety of benefits. Among them is the fact that there is a high possibility that no one will try to arrest Putin there.

The two men meet as part of Trump’s efforts to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This prompted the International Criminal Court to issue a warrant for Putin after indicting him with war crimes.

“I don’t think it’s a good time for him to go to Europe,” former Alaska Lieutenant Colonel Mead Treadwell said of Putin.

In addition to the warrants of arrest, Russian strong may have a hard time flying between Europe and Canada. The US did the same thing, but Trump apparently has abandoned the Biden-era ban due to Putin’s visit. Trump’s flight from Washington, DC takes about seven hours.

Some experts have also criticised Trump’s decision to host Putin on US soil, no matter how far away from the White House, to legalize Russian leaders. Last year, Putin received 87% of the votes voted in the Russian presidential election. This is a statistical election expert, likened to the “fake” elections held in an African dictatorship.

It’s closer than most people notice

Because Russia and Alaska are separated only by narrow stretches in the Bering Sea – yes, there are places where you can really see Russia from your American home – the logistics of acquiring both men are relatively simple, Yuri Ushakov, the assistant assistant to the Russian president, told the BBC.

The closest distance between the two countries is the small island of Diomede.

Little Diomede is American, while Big Diomere is Russian, but his family has long been divided into two parts. This reflects Russia’s previous Alaska ownership. The two islands are only three miles away. The two mainlands themselves are 55 miles away, with Alaska’s Seward Peninsula and Russia’s Chukotka Peninsula sitting opposite the Bering Sea.

The National Park Service Beringland Bridge National Reserve is partially present to highlight how the two peninsulas were once connected, allowing ancient people to move from Eurasian land to North America.

“For our delegation, it seems very logical for merely flying over the Bering Strait and such a critical and anticipated summit for both countries’ leaders in Alaska,” Ushakov said.

Alaska was once a part of Russia, so some cultural connections remain. Approximately 80 Russian Orthodox Churches and Chapels are still in Alaska, many of which are located in Peninsula, near the western islands of the state and the Bering Sea. The first Russian Orthodox Church was founded on Kodiak Island in 1794, and the Holy Resurrected Orthodox Cathedral still serves it.

During the Cold War, the threat of Soviet invasion from the West has prompted massive defensive investments in Alaska’s missile alert system and marine and aviation patrols that continue to this day. The base where Putin and Trump meet are home to fighter jets like the F-22 Raptor, and are used to intercept Russian military aircraft as they fly near the border.

Russian invasion pushed Ukrainians up to Alaska

Alaska has long had a Russian community, but following Russia’s 2022 invasion, hundreds of Ukrainian refugees have also moved there under the Federal Humanitarian Program. Trump put the program on indefinite hold when he took office.

Trump meets with Putin without Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky. This is a move that concerns European leaders who have pledged unconditional support in his country’s efforts to repel Russia.

European leaders have expressed concern that Trump will put pressure on Ukraine to make too many concessions to Putin. But Treadwell said he believes that ending the war should be a top priority, and if this meeting in Alaska is necessary, it’s worth it.

“There are ex-Russians who live in Alaska and many ex-Ukrainians who live in Alaska,” he said. “If this leads to peace, I think we’re all very happy.”

Alaska has long been a stopover for diplomatic missions.

In addition to its strategic military importance, Anchorage is a familiar stopover for diplomatic missions moving between Europe and Asia.

  • In 1971, President Richard Nixon met with the Japanese emperor on the tarmac in Anchorage when Hirohito traveled to Europe for a conference. According to his presidential library, Nixon said it was the first time a Japanese monarch had stepped into foreign soil. Nixon also said their meeting was held almost equidistant from Tokyo.
  • Pope John Paul II stopped in Anchorage on his way back to Rome from Japan in 1981, touring the city and meeting his followers. He also met President Ronald Reagan at Fairbanks in 1984.
  • In 2021, then-ans Anthony Blinken national met with Chinese counterparts for several days of trade talks held at a hotel that was considered the halfway point between the two nations’ capitals.

Trump Putin’s meeting comes in Alaska’s busiest season

The White House has not discussed why meetings are being held at military bases, but one factor may have played a key role. This is Alaska tourist season and all other places are solid.

State statistics show that over 2 million tourists travel to Alaska every year, travelling via cruise ships and the historic Alaska Railroad.

Early in his administration, Trump renamed Denali Mount McKinley, and President Barack Obama renamed it to honor Alaska’s Native Americans. Trump said he is changing his name to honor former president William McKinley, who is responsible for adding Hawaii, Guam and several other territories to the United States.

Federal officials warn during the Trump Putin meetings on August 15th and August 16th that passengers and cargo flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport could be affected by temporary flight restrictions.

According to airport officials, August is July the second busiest month. Flight restrictions also affect the adjacent Lake Food Seaplane base, the busiest seaplane base in the world.

Many other presidents take counterparts on tourist trips or use state visits to do their own sightseeing, but Trump and Putin rarely spend time fishing or landing on glaciers. Inted, Trump said he hopes he will know “in the first two minutes” whether he will be able to reach the deal with Putin.

Treadwell, who was the state’s lieutenant governor from 2010 to 2014, said there was another reason Trump would agree to meet at Jber. He said that in addition to the traps of sand and the dangers of water, players there must regularly avoid moose and bears.

“In the summer here, you can play golf until almost midnight, but I don’t think he has time to do that,” he said. “I think all politically striped people want this conference to create peace.”

How many presidents did Putin meet? The answer may surprise you.

President Donald Trump will sit on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, to announce the seventh meeting between the two world leaders.

The summit, which focuses on ending the war in Ukraine, will be held at the joint base of the military facility Elmendorf Richardson. This will be the first meeting between Trump and Putin on American soil.

deepseek returns to nvidia for R2 model after huawei ai chip fails

0

Deepseek’s plans to train a new AI model R2 on Huawei’s Ascend chip failed and forced Nvidia to retreat while delaying the launch.

The story, pushed out by Beijing for several months, was one of unstoppable technological advancements and marching to self-sufficiency. However, in reality, there is a habit of chewing. The recent troubles of the Chinese AI Darling Deepshake are examples of textbooks where ambitions meet the hard walls of technical limitations.

After the successful launch of the R1 model in January, Deepseek found himself under pressure from China. The message was clear, according to three people talking about The Financial Times. Use Huawei chips instead of Nvidia chips.

When it comes to actually training a new R2 model, sources say Deepseek encountered a “persistent technical problem” with Huawei’s AI chip. The problem was so basic that the project was stopped. Those who know the situation said this was the main reason the planned launch of the model was scrapped in May, and why they put the company behind them in a market where no one was waiting.

To understand why this is so big, you need to know the difference between AI training and reasoning. Training is a difficult part, such as sending students to university for years of intense learning. It requires a huge amount of power and stability. Reasoning is a relatively “easy” part, like asking questions to graduates.

Deepseek discovered that Huawei’s chips may be ready for the final exam, but they have not yet advanced to rigorous university courses. The company had no choice but to go back to Nvidia’s powerful system to train. Sources say the Deepseek team is trying to work with the R2 model with the Huawei chip in the less demanding inference phase.

The two confirmed that Huawei sent its own team of engineers to the Deepseek office to help the R2 model run on chips. However, even with the experts in the room, they were unable to make the training a success.

Talk to anyone in the industry and they will tell you this is not a big surprise. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said earlier this year that the US is “exposing Huawei’s achievements” and “it’s not that great yet.”

However, Beijing is still actively promoting high-tech giants who prefer to support local hardware, and the Financial Times reports that companies must justify their orders for H20 chips that are compliant with Nvidia’s exports. This is part of the strategy of building domestic champions, but it can force companies to technically choose their choice.

Aside from the issues facing Huawei chips in training, Deepseek founder Liang Wenfeng reportedly told his team he was unhappy with the overall progress towards the R2 model. He is said to aim for them higher and push them to build something that can keep the company up among AI industry leaders.

All top-down directives and national pride still apply the laws of engineering. The Deepseek story reminds us that there are no shortcuts in a global race for AI hegemony. China has played a long game, but for now the Performance Crown remains firmly in Nvidia’s head.

About saving Mexico’s “most unfairly treated animals on earth”

Editor’s Note: Call to Earth is a CNN-edited series that, together with solutions, addresses the environmental challenges facing our planet. Rolex’s Permanent Planet Initiative is partnering with CNN to promote awareness and education on key sustainability issues and encourage positive action.

Bats have a bad reputation. Myths, folk tales, and negative media coverage often means that people either connect these flying mammals to vampires or condemn the outbreak of disease.

However, bat populations around the world are declining, and without them, ecosystems will lose important benefits such as pest control, pollination and seed dispersal.

Through education, research and advocacy, Rodrigo Medellin, a senior professor of ecology at the University of Mexico, has made its mission to change the way people see these animals.

Medellin’s appeal to bats began when she first held her hand at the age of 13. “That’s when I decided to devote my life to their research and protection,” he says. Since then, the cave has become his happy place.

Mexican ecologist Rodrigo Medellin wants to care more about bats in the world.

“Peace, darkness, silence is apart from the creaking sounds of bats. I feel relaxed in the cave. All I do is try to convey this feeling to those who are with me.” He also founded the Latin American Network for Bat Conservation and the Global South Bat, a network of bat scientists.

There are over 1,400 bat species, making up about a fifth of known mammal species around the world. They were the only mammals that could power, not just gliding, which allowed them to spread all over the world. They use highly developed echolocations to navigate to the night to find prey.

Although certain species have lived for over 30 years, bats breed slowly. Usually one puppy per year. This makes it difficult for the population to recover from the decline.

“They are very mystical. Many people fear, attack, or splash at them. They are probably the most unfairly treated animals on the planet,” says Medellin.

Bats are often seen as symbols of evil and darkness, primarily due to their relationship with vampires and the supernatural in Western folklore. Throughout the history of Christian Europe, Bats are associated with demons, evil spirits and witches.

Eastern cultures tend to Show them more positively. In Chinese culture, for example, they are considered symbols of luck and happiness.

Still, bat perceptions have been exacerbated by the emergence of Covid-19. They believe this comes from bats and are often seen negatively due to their association with disease.

“Bats certainly aren’t as well-savory as your dog or cat. It’s awfully exaggerated,” explains Medellin.

One of the most influential services offered by BAT is pest control. Medellín, only one species along Mexico’s northern border, counts up to 30 million individuals, devouring about 300 tons in total Every night of insects.

But they do more than hold back insects. Fruit-eating bats play an important role in spreading seeds when they fly long distances in search of food.

“By removing seeds far from parents and children, it regenerates forests, maintains plant diversity and supports the life cycle of countless other organisms. Forest recovery is highly dependent on bats,” says Medellin.

According to Medellin, bats are also important pollinators for a wide range of plants. Agave, a plant used to make tequila.

Despite its important ecological role, populations around the world face many challenges, most of which are caused by human activity. Habitat loss, wind turbines, pesticide use, and, more recently, white nasal syndrome, a fungal disease, all have been at serious cost. As a result, many species are currently listed as endangered or blackmailed.

“Imagine what happens if you lose a bat overnight,” says Medellin. “Without them, crops will be destroyed by hungry insects, mosquito populations will skyrocket and significantly change the way we live.”

He promises to persuade people that bats are important to everyday happiness, and believes that higher consciousness can change attitudes and turn fear into fascination.

Through initiatives such as bat-friendly agave agriculture, long-distance travel tracing and international conservation networks, he protects bat populations and highlights its role in pollination, pest control and ecosystem health.

“I’m going to fall in love with people, facts, images, evidence, and automatically they fall in love with bats,” he says. “In my experience, anyone who has come into contact with a bat will maintain that contact and begin to expand it.”

“If anyone is still afraid of bats, I would like to invite them to learn a little more,” he adds. “They’re going to win your heart.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom announces special elections on November 4th

California is the most populous state in the coalition and the only state with more seats in Congress than Texas.

play

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that his state will hold a special election on November 4th, asking voters to approve the mid-term Ladydick plan.

Newsom made the announcement after criticising President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans for their intention to redraw the map of the state’s Congress in order to create a more Republican-leaning Congressional district ahead of the 2026 election. Florida and Ohio are also underway to rezone efforts, which could benefit Republicans. Indiana and Missouri are also Republican-controlled states that discuss rezoning.

Overall, these efforts could win more than nine Republicans to strengthen their home 219-212 majority ahead of the Democratic election as Trump’s approval rating.

California has an independent constituency committee designed to limit partisan influence on the map drawing process, but Newsom said that it could return to the committee to pull out the map ahead of 2032, as it can approve measures to derive new processes that will be implemented for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 House elections.

“We affirm our commitment to national independent constituencies after the 2030 census, but we are asking voters to make their consensus and medium term changes,” Newsmu said. He didn’t say how many seats were trying to defy the democratic trends from Republican trends.

He called on Congress to pass a national law that would create a National Constituency Commission to effectively end gerrymandering nationwide, and denounced Republicans in Congress for not supporting such proposals in the past.

Christian Martinez, the regional spokesman for the Republican Congress’ campaign division, criticized Newsom’s announcement on social media as “stunts” that “has nothing to do with Californians,” and has nothing to do with the integration of radical Democrat power.”

A longtime Democratic base, California is the most populous state in the union and the only state with more seats in Congress than Texas.

“I know they’re going to say, ‘Don’t ruin Texas,'” Newsom said. “Well, don’t ruin the Great Golden State.”

Hong Kong Court delays national security trial on health concerns of media mogul Jimmy Lai

Hong Kong
–

A Hong Kong court postponed the national security trial hearing of media mogul Jimmy Lye on Friday due to concerns about his health after saying his defense was experiencing heart-moving pit.

Lai, the brand of democratic fire and now shuttered Apple Daily founder, appeared visibly thin and thin on Friday morning to end his debate on his groundbreaking national security incident.

The 77-year-old spent more than 1,600 days at the largest security Hong Kong prison.

Friday’s hearing was already delayed Thursday due to a massive storm, but continued about 15 minutes after the court heard about Rye’s health from his defense team.

Rai’s defense attorney, Robert Pan SC, told the judge that Rai “has some episodes that he felt were falling apart.”

Although Rai has undergone a medical checkup, prison staff have not yet provided him with a halter monitor, a device to record heart activity, Pan said.

Prosecutors said a team of medical professionals were waiting in court on Friday to address LAI’s medical needs.

However, Judge Alex Lee postponed the session on Monday, saying it would be “wise” not to start until Lye’s medical needs are present.

Jimmy Ly’s son Sebastian Ly told CNN before the hearing that he was deeply concerned about his father’s health.

“He’s 77 this year and will be 78 at the end of the year. Incarceration of all kinds is very concerned about his health, so don’t worry about solitary confinement and diabetes,” he said, calling his father’s long solitary confinement “a form of torture.”

“And over the summer, Hong Kong rises to 30 degrees, almost 40 degrees, and he’s in a small concrete cell, so he’s burning there. We’re very concerned about him.”

The Hong Kong government said it is strongly condemning what it calls a “misleading statement” about its treatment of Jimmy Lai in custody.

“The remarks by Sebastien Lai regarding the solitary confinement of Lai Chee-Ying are totally suppressing the facts, reflecting the malicious intent to smear and attack the HKSAR government,” Lai said in a statement.

The closing discussion is expected to take eight days, and it could take weeks or even months before the judge passes their verdict.

A British citizen, Lai is charged with two counts of charges with foreign military, a crime punished by life in prison under Beijing’s 2020 national security law, and another incitement charge. He pleads not guilty to all charges.

The outspoken founder of Apple Daily – the fiercely democratized tabloid newspaper known for years to force the closure of the ferocious broadside against the Chinese Communist Party has become a symbol of Beijing’s sweeping national security crackdown on the former wheel’s financial hub.

US President Donald Trump previously vowed that he had been released and confirmed in a radio interview with Fox News on Thursday that Lye’s ultimate fate was part of his continued negotiations with Beijing.

“I’m going to raise it, and I’ve already lifted it up, and I’m going to do everything I can to save him,” Trump said.

“You can understand, President Xi won’t be exactly excited about doing that,” Trump noted Chinese leader Xi Jinping. “All of that is said, so his name is already in the circle of what we’re talking about. We know what we can do.”

Nicholas Rossi, Conman, who fakes his death, committed the crime of rape in Utah

0

play

Conman of Rhode Island was accused of forgerying his death and fleeing the United States to avoid allegations of rape and sexual assault.

According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, a ju judge in Salt Lake County discovered Nicholas Alarverdien, 38, who was found guilty of first-degree rape of a 26-year-old Salt Lake County woman in 2008. The judges reached their conviction on Wednesday, August 13th, following a three-day trial.

“In this case, we are grateful to the survivors in this case for their willingness to move forward a few years after this attack occurred,” Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said in a statement. “We appreciate her patience when we worked to bring the defendant back to Salt Lake County so that this trial could be held and justice could be achieved. It took courage and courage to stand up to the attacker to hold him accountable.”

According to prosecutors, Alahverdian’s belief stems from accusations that he raped his then-girlfriend, whom he met online. Shortly after the two began dating, prosecutors said Allerverdians should have married a woman and bought a wedding ring.

But Aralverdian quickly became verbally emotionally abusive, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said the discussion at the mall became violent and when the couple returned to Aralverdian’s apartment, he refused to let her leave and rape her.

The charges will be punished for five years at Utah Correctional Facility, according to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. He is scheduled to be sentenced October 20th.

Alahverdian, who was charged under his previous surname Rossi, also faces additional rape fees involving another Utah woman in 2008. He has not yet gone to trial for those charges.

Nicholas Alahverdian handed over to us in 2024

Alahverdian has been held unbelievable at the Utah County Jail since January 2024 when authorities handed him over from Scotland. He spent three years in Scotland pretending to be “Arthur Knight,” a former Irish orphan and victim of misidentification, pretending to be “Arthur Knight,” and the strange pretense unfolded in front of international media and extradition courts.

A Scottish judge who tolerated Aralverdian’s charade at a hearing about his identity cleared the path to Aralverdian’s return to the United States – he concluded that “he is as cheating and deceiving as evasive and manipulative.”

Alahverdian finally gave up on the hoax while asking a Utah District Court judge to bail in November 2024. During the hearing, he argued that the long-standing deception and name change were part of an effort to protect himself from the “threat of death.”

Prosecutors argued that Alahverdian, who uses oxygen and a wheelchair, remains at flight risk despite his physical condition. The judge denied bail, noting that Aralverdian’s British wife was still offering him money “to help him with a potential flight.”

Why did Nicholas Araweldian forge his own death?

Alahverdian, who grew up in foster care and later became a critic of Rhode Island’s child welfare system, claims he was killed by an unknown state politician a decade ago for his advocacy work for state care children. In 2017, he escaped these suspected threats in a one-way battle with Ireland and pursued public relations efforts before eventually heading to Scotland.

Prosecutors said Alahverdian tried to forge his death and fled the United States to avoid being located. By 2019, Alahverdian was trying to remove her name from the registered sex offender list.

Meanwhile, the FBI began an investigation into Alahverdian for credit card fraud after the former foster father told authorities that he spent $200,000 on a card that Alahverdian photographed using his foster parent’s name and financial records.

In January 2020, Alahverdian began to spread the word to the Rhode Island media that he had late stage non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The following month he described the woman who himself was Aralverdian’s wife and in his name informed reporters that the Foundation had passed away.

Then, in September 2020, Utah County authorities issued an arrest warrant for his stepfather’s surname, Nicolas Rossi. Investigators later pursued him to Scotland after searching for his iCloud account and bank records, and he was arrested in hospital in December 2021 after awakening from coma due to Covid.

Alahverdian, who used several different aliases, has sued a judge in a Salt Lake County case in recent weeks, complaining that he is currently being charged with his birth name, Alahverdian. The judge denied the request.

What Aralverdians accused in Utah?

Authorities say Aralverdian was convicted in 2008 for exploring a woman at Ohio Community College. He then tried to sue the woman for honour of libel damage, and cast his request for appeal when a significant portion of the new evidence was presumably controlled by fake blog posts.

Investigators said the DNA of the case linked Aral Verdian to the rape of a 21-year-old woman in Orem, Utah in September 2008.

This week’s trial, which began on August 11th, comes from allegations that he raped his ex-girlfriend in November 2008. DNA evidence did not link him to the case, but investigators moved forward after admitting Aral Verdian in his international extradition lawsuit.

As in Orem’s case, authorities say Aralverdian met a woman from Salt Lake City online. They went on a short date and bought wedding rings before their relationship surged quickly.

But after a violent debate at the mall — Aralverdian called the police and reported that she hit him if she didn’t return him to her car — the two returned to his apartment where they raped her, police said.

Hundreds of people suffered from food poisoning in Indonesia after eating free school lunches

0

More than 360 people have been ill in the town of Slagen, Java, Indonesia’s Slagen town, after consuming school lunches, officials said Thursday in the biggest food poisoning incident that struck President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship free meal program.

Since its launch in January, the free school lunch program has been undermined by cases of heavy food poisoning across the archipelago, affecting more than 1,000 people.

Sragen government chief Sigit Pamungkas said 365 Reuters have become ill and food samples are being tested in the lab. The government will pay for treatment if necessary.

Withdandrid Hoimanyu, a ninth grader at Gemoron 1 Middle School, told Reuters that he woke up at night with a sharp pain in his stomach.

He had a headache and diarrhea, but after seeing a social media post from a schoolmate complaining about the same, he speculated that it was caused by food poisoning.

Possible contaminated lunches were turmeric rice, omelette ribbons, fried tempeh, cucumbers, lettuce salad, sliced apples, milk cooked in the central kitchen and distributed to several schools.

“We asked to temporarily suspend the distribution of food from that kitchen until the results of the lab return,” Sigitt said.

The government’s national nutrition agency that oversees the programme has raised standards for kitchen operation and delivery in the aftermath of a previous food poisoning incident, its chief Dadan Hindeyana told Reuters.

The free meal program has been rapidly expanding to over 15 million recipients so far. Authorities are expected to reach 83 million by the end of the year, and will budget a total cost of 171 trillion rupiah ($10.62 billion) this year.

Media reports say that in the case of food poisoning in West Java in West Java in May, more than 200 students became ill and the lab found that food was contaminated with bacteria from salmonella and E. coli.

DC’s most crime-affected areas await Trump’s crackdown

0

While security guards were enacted at tourist-friendly national malls, parts of Washington, DC’s most crime-rich area, showed little indication of military or federal agents.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s federal law enforcement and National Guard force deployment produced humvees in national malls and tourist destination agents roving bands as part of his stated efforts to crack down on crime in the country’s capital.

But many residents of the city’s highest crime area say they haven’t seen the outcome of Trump’s surge where it’s most needed.

“He probably doesn’t even know where Anacostia is,” says Charles Wilson, who has one of the highest rates of murder and violent crime in DC. Wilson says the low-income area of D.C.’s 8th District has endured several shootouts in recent years where bullets have stayed in homes, cars and even children’s bedrooms.

“I think this is all dignity and circumstances,” Wilson says.

As part of the August 11 campaign to “recover our capital” from crime and the homelessness, the federal government seized control of Washington’s metropolitan police station.

As the White House did not immediately respond to requests for details on the USA Today deployment, an MPD spokesman did not reply to a message seeking comment on Trump’s order to take over the department. .

Some Anacostia residents welcome help from Trump to fight crime

Like others interviewed by USA Today at Anacostia on the afternoon and evening of August 13th, Wilson said he is trained in the community and welcomes the presence of more law enforcement agencies to help the neighborhood reduce crime and violence.

Wilson, 49, has lived in the Southeast DC community for more than 20 years. On July 18, 2024, he woke up at about 2:30am by sounding like war on a corner suburban street from the historic Frederick Douglas Estate.

When he obtained footage from his neighbor’s doorbell camera and posted it online, the video of the two men running up and down the streets fired each other for nearly a minute.

“It was one thing, but it was something else,” said Wilson, a longtime community activist and chairman of the D.C. Democrats. He said the issue is not political. Democrats and Republican neighbours want to see the benefits of claiming that the benefits of what Trump claims are a new campaign to improve cities.

So far, he said, “There’s nothing new here. I’m not going to be anything different.”

“We’ve done nothing here,” said Anacostia resident Tina Harris, walking along Marion Barry Avenue, named after the former D.C. mayor.

“I think it’s clearly a shift from a real issue,” she said, including budget cuts to Trump’s local social services and police.

Trump announced his actions to “save our country’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and demons” after a famous attack on former staff member of 19-year-old Edward Coristine (DOGE) that occurred early on August 3rd.

Mayor Muriel Bowser challenged Trump’s justification for declaring a criminal emergency, calling it “a so-called emergency,” and pointed out that crime has been circulating after the 2023 spike.

However, crimes in District 8, including murder, car theft, robbery and assault with dangerous weapons, have historically been nearly twice as many as other wards in the city.

A few blocks from Wilson’s home, a cruiser from a metropolitan police station was parked and sat at a slowly flashing intersection.

Inside officers said he was just doing his regular rounds, like the other two officers interviewed by USA Today throughout the evening, and he didn’t see any increase in the nearby 7th District, a law enforcement or military presence there, or another high crime zone. All three officers refused to give their names, saying they were not allowed to speak publicly.

However, one officer said as a DC resident he welcomed additional resources Trump approved.

One Anacostia resident standing outside her home watching the cruiser confirmed that the officer was a nearby beat police officer. And despite nightly gunshots, carjacking and other crimes since Trump’s announcement, he has not seen any additional MPD officers, federal agents, or National Guard troops since Trump’s announcement. He also refused to give his name, citing a pending background check for work.

Darrell Gaston, chef and founder of nearby Kitchen Savage, showed USA the front window of his fine dining restaurant, which he had to replace after being smashed in a recent shootout between two car residents. Wild Shootout sent street lights to the restaurant.

Gaston, a member of the four-term advisory committee, said he saw evidence of increased security. Instead, he wants to see “I hope that people who specialize in community engagement and community protection will lead to a reduction in crime,” Gaston said.

“And hopefully, it won’t lead to an increase in the rights of citizens that are being violated,” Gaston said of the Trump surge. “When the MPD violates your rights, there are protocols to follow to deal with it. If the FBI or DEA violates your rights, who do you go to?”

In District 8, violent crime has declined overall this year, but police officers remained stable at 38 compared to the same period in 2024.

A swarm of federal agents near Capitol Hill

Crossing the Anacostia River near the Capitol, on the night of August 13th, we saw a quiet view of the rough HH Street commercials and nightlife corridors. It was one of the attacks Trump quoted.

The only visible security presence was the occasional MPD cruiser driving. But the store owner and Barfrey said the area has been swarmed by federal agents and police late at night since Trump’s announcement.

Johnny Lou showed USA Today a video of a team of seven FBI, ICE and DEA agents patrolling the area late on the evening of August 12, questioning people for drinking and smoking marijuana in public, and even arresting them.

Lou welcomed the surge, saying he frequently watched shootings, stab wounds, carjacks and robbers outside the Tiki Gardens restaurant.

“The MPD is fine. We have a good relationship with them. But the Fed, not particularly ice,” Lu said of the corridor merchants and residents. “We have to worry about them.”

Ag Pam Bondi Names Dea Head as “Emergency” DC Police Chief

0

play

WASHINGTON – U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy named Drug Enforcement Director Terry Cole on August 14 as “Emergency Police Chief” for the Washington State Police Department.

“Committee Cole shall assume all powers and duties granted to the District of Columbia Police Chief,” Bondy’s order said, adding that Cole has the authority to issue orders applicable to MPD members. The existing leadership of the MPD, including the current police chief and director, “must receive approval from Chief Call before issuing any further directives to the MPD,” the Bondi order said.

President Donald Trump said he deployed hundreds of National Guard in Washington earlier this week and temporarily took over the city’s police department, suppressing what he portrayed as a criminal emergency in the US capital, but statistics show a decline in cases of violent crime.

Republican Trump said on August 13 that he will crack down on crime in pursuit of long-term federal control of Washington police, and will engage in an escalating campaign to exert the president’s power over the nation’s capital, a Democratic base.

Washington mayor and Democrat Muriel Bowser has pushed back Trump’s claim that crime is on the rise. Both federal and city crime statistics show that violent crime in Washington has been declining sharply since its peak in 2023.

Trump called the statistics “fraud.”

Trump has previously threatened to expand his efforts to other democratically run cities such as Chicago, but he also claims he has failed to deal with the crime. Trump’s extraordinary move in Washington reflects how he approached his second term in the office, shattering legal concerns to test the limits of power in his office.

As North Korea is increasing its troops, how worried is South Korea’s downsizing forces?

0

Writing has been on the wall for a long time. South Korea’s birth rate has fallen over the majority of the last decade, writing about military troubles as regional threats and global conflicts boil over.

Now, new reports show that the number of South Korean troops has fallen 20% over the past six years. We found this to reflect the shrinking and expanding elderly workforce in one of the world’s fastest-aged countries, mainly due to a declining pool of young men.

The Ministry of Defense reported that it was attributed to “complex factors,” including population decline, and “complex factors,” with fewer men looking to become officers for “treatment of soldiers.” The report did not elaborate on its treatment, but research and investigations previously highlighted the military’s infamous harsh situation.

As of July, the military said it had 450,000 troops. This is down from 563,000 in 2019.

“If the number of permanent army (members) continues to decline, it can be difficult to ensure limits on elite talent and operating equipment,” a report shared last week by lawmaker Chummy warned.

This news comes at a bad time for Korea. South Korea is a key western ally that hosts a vast number of US troops and has mutual defense treaties with Washington.

Crossing the border, neighboring North Korea sent tens of thousands of soldiers to fight for Russia along the front line with Ukraine. Moscow instead shares advanced military technology with Pyongyang, increasing the fear of violating international sanctions.

On June 19, 2024, North Korean citizens Kim Jong and Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, the North Korean dominant Kim family continues to blow up hostile rhetoric, threatening to destroy South Korea with nuclear weapons if attacked, warning that Seoul will remain “enemy.”

But experts say that doesn’t necessarily mean that North Korean troops are better.

The North faces its own population problems and declining birth rates, and its technology is far behind in the South. This now hopes to close the shortage of military recruits through innovation.

“South Korea is far ahead of North Korea in terms of traditional weapons,” said Choi Byung-ku, a national security professor at Sang-Jong University. “We have a small army now, and I like to say “small but strong army.” That’s what we need. ”

On the surface, North Korea has several advantages.

According to the CIA World Factbook, it is one of the most critically militarized countries in the world, with up to 1.3 million military personnel. That’s almost three times the number of South Korean troops.

These units also serve the military much longer. With an average of 10 years, we can “enhance unit cohesion (and) knowledge of each other’s abilities.”

In contrast, within half of the year and half of the service most South Korean conscriptions provide, “what you can develop is not very sophisticated skills,” Seiler said.

According to UN data, North Korea’s birth rate is defined as the average number of children born to women in their lifetime. Hoin Lee, a senior economist at the Southern Institute for Economic Research, says that North Korea has been giving birth to more babies a year since 2018 than in the South.

But the bigger picture is more complicated, experts told CNN.

For one thing, South Korea has around 3.1 million people in preparation. Their training may be basic, but it gives them the number they need for a potential war – it doesn’t include the 28,500 US troops stationed in the country.

Pyongyang has also faced its own population problems as its fertility rate immerses in the past years following the pandemic. Kim Jong-un, the authoritarian leader of the nation, pointed out the issue at a 2023 Mothers National Conference, urging them to “bear many children” as a patriotic duty.

It could become ill for highly isolated countries with economies that rely on labor-intensive industries such as agriculture and mining, Lee said.

It’s hard to see how much this has impacted the North Korean forces so far. However, the fact that Pyongyang sent tens of thousands of troops to fight for Russia doesn’t feel that Kim “is worried that there aren’t enough soldiers to do the job of protecting his hometown,” Saylor said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong will instruct soldiers at the Army Subunit shooting contest on July 23, 2025, with photos released by the official South Korean Central Communications Agency.

Their army also joined in to fill the gap where more women existed. This trend began near the turn of the century after previous flooding of fertility, Lee said.

Many are young women working in the military’s communications, administrative and anti-aircraft artillery departments, Lee said. Meanwhile, middle-aged and older women are mobilized to bridge gaps in other private sectors.

In contrast, women are not drafted in South Korea. This is a controversial point that has sparked resentment among young Korean men who argue that their essential services are at a disadvantage in their research, career and personal life.

As of 2023, volunteer women accounted for only 3.6% of the total military, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Some experts suggest that eliminating more women could solve the Korean problem. But Choi, a national security professor, argued that the country needs to move away from the idea of increasing talent, and instead focused on moving forward with the technology and making the military an elite.

“I personally disagree with the opinion that we must have a large army because North Korea does,” he said. “The size of our forces is decreasing and there are no many options to increase it. As South Korea is on the path to becoming a science and technology powerhouse, I think we need to adopt this crisis as an opportunity.”

On European battlefields, Ukraine directly shows how out-of-armies and troops with guns can still be held back and inflicted painful losses on far larger enemies by embracing new and affordable technology.

Tools such as drones and cyberwarfare could help reduce South Korea’s dependence on infantry and artillery, Saylor said. Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at EWHA Womens University in Seoul, said AI support and autonomy systems could further boost the shrinking military.

Choi pointed out that South Korea spends much more on defense than in the north, and has many military training, including allies like the US, and is prepared for overall combat readiness.

However, Saylor warned at the end of the day that “You still need people. There are no robots or automation that can replace trained soldiers, airmen and Marines.” Easley agreed, saying that South Korean troops will still face a shortage of talent during the war.

And there are still wider challenges. How will the authorities change cultural attitudes towards the military within South Korea?

People can volunteer to serve longer conditions and become professional executives who train with more advanced weapons, but the number of applicants has steadily declined over the years.

Famous incidents of haze, bullying and harassment in the South Korean military may have contributed to the military’s negative perception.

In recent years, the government has eased restrictions on conscription, such as allowing mobile phones to be used at certain times, and provided alternatives to conscription.

But that’s not enough, Choi said.

“We need to improve the welfare of our military and fight the spirits as a whole,” he said. He added that supporting the current size of the military will become even more difficult in the coming decades as the population decreases further.

“By the 2040s, even maintaining a troop of 350,000 people will be difficult, so we need to establish an optimized talent structural system as soon as possible.”

It was sold in 1867, but some Russians want Alaska from America

0

The theory that the US stole Russia from Alaska in 1867 has been pervasive for decades.

play

Back in 1991, the once-fighting Soviet Union fell apart, and Westerners cheered, Vladimir Putin’s favorite rock and roll band released “Don’t Faquel Around, America.”

This resilient, accordion-led single ignored the misguided collapse of the Soviet dictatorship, instead pointing out the listener 2.4 miles eastward and the 49th US state across the Bering Strait:

“Please return us Alaska/ Give us dear Native American land.”

Now, as President Donald Trump prepares to host Vladimir Putin at a military base in Alaska, the song by Ruba (the loudest) of the Loubble Louz Rocker has resurfaced the resurfaced by a conspiracy theory claiming that his uncle Sam had scam his mother Russia from a 665,000 square mailed Alabama gem.

Russia America

Andrei Zunamansky, a history professor at the University of Memphis, said that during the conflict in which nationalists evoked betrayal of Russia in the 19th century and the Soviet Empire in the 20th century, Alaskan plots, when long-standing Russian plots became prominent in Russia during the conflict, became prominent in Russia.

Such a speech has been “amplified” during the Ukrainian War and the Trump Putin Summit on August 15th, Zunamansi told USA Today.

“It turns out that Russian Americans weren’t sold to the US. The actual events were completely different,” the Russian news outlet recently wrote, explaining the alternative, and historians say that Russia’s allegedly claimed Dominion in Alaska was simply leased to the US and expired long, and is wrong.

“Subtle act”

The first permanent Russian reconciliation in Alaska was founded in 1784, and today’s state still preserves a small number of Russian orthodox churches. Some Aleutians continue to practice an integrated combination of orthodox Christianity and shamanism, Zunamansky said.

However, after the defeat of Russia at the hands of the British in the Crimean War of 1854-56, Emperor Nicholas II decided to reduce his losses and abandon Alaska, which was difficult to defend. The UK, which controlled Canada, had a focus on its rich territory, so Nicholas sold it for $7 million and sold it to the US, a low-fighting bidder.

“It was malicious” act against England, Znamenski said.

Nicholas is not forgiven by the nationalist writer, but some of them see him as a trick of Masonic and Jewish plots. One author, Ivan Milonov, wrote his 2007 book, “A Destiny’s Trade: How Alaska Was Sold.”

Paradise Lost

Alaska and Crimea remain linked in several ways today, both of which are lost by weak leaders – Yeltsin, the first president of independent Russia, recognized Crimea as part of Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In 2016, two years after Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine, a black granite monument commanded future generations and grew up in the sailor’s square in Yevpatria in the Black Sea city. “We returned Crimea.

“Siberia and Alaska are the same on two coasts,” sang Ruba. “Women, horses, thrills along the way.”

The music video for the song begins with an animated machine gun cutting Alaska from the North American continent. (The lead singer of Liuba was later elected to the Russian parliament or Dumas as a member of Putin’s United Russian Party.)

Everything or nothing

For most Russian nationalist intellectuals, Alaska is no more of a recovery gem than a warning of concessions to the West. Alexander Duguin, the leading far-right intellectual of the Russian “Eurasians” who are closely associated with Putin, often poses the example of Alaska.

Duguin, whose adult daughter was killed in a 2022 car bombing that denounced the Ukrainian Secret Service, was fatally serious in discussing the Alaska Summit stakes in a recent article.

“President Putin has repeatedly admitted that the West never maintains its words and is constantly deceiving and distorting.

“For Trump, it’s a deal for our destiny,” Duguin said. “Ukraine is ours or nothing at all.”

Alex Jones’ Inforers is again on sale, Texas Judge Rules

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones faced another set-off in court as a Texas District Judge ruled that his Infowars platform could be sold again. The decision follows a 2024 ruling that ceased previous sales due to concerns over the auction process.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ruled on Wednesday, August 13th that Infowars’ parent company, the Free Speech System, will be put into the hands of court-appointed recipients, and that the company’s assets will be used to pay a legal decision of $1.3 billion.

In 2022, the court ruled that Jones had slandered the family in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting. He repeatedly made false claims that the massacre was a “hoax” staged as part of a government conspiracy to confiscate guns from Americans.

Gambling orders pave the way for onions to try again to buy Info and its assets.

In December 2024, the satirical news site initially won an Infowars court-ordered auction, but a US bankruptcy judge blocked the sale and said the bankruptcy auction did not bring about the best possible bid.

When and where will the Trump Putin meeting be held? Time, schedule, live stream

play

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet at the in-person summit on August 15th, with both leaders traveling to Anchorage, Alaska for a sit-in.

The two presidents are expected to discuss Russia’s war with Ukraine. This was launched more than three years ago with the country’s full-scale invasion, as Trump angled over three years ago for the peace deal. It’s a high stakes exercise for Trump as Ukrainian America’s solid support fires from some of his own party and European leaders claim that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is present in future talks, so he attempts a mediated role towards the conflict.

Here’s what you need to know about the much-anticipated diplomatic summit:

When and where will the meeting be?

The pair’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:30am (3:30pm ET) and a joint press conference is expected to continue.

The two world leaders meet at Elmendorf Richardson’s joint base in Anchorage, Alaska. The base hosts around 30,000 service members, their families and private employees, and is about 700 miles from the border with Russia.

Trump is scheduled to leave Washington, D.C. on early August 15th, flying in Air Force 1 for about six to seven hours before landing at Anchorage.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt, who appeared on Fox News’ Fox and Friends on August 14, said Trump’s meeting with Putin would be followed by a “bilateral lunch” between the two leaders and their respective delegations.

According to the National Archives, Putin will be Alaska as the first elected leader of Russia. If everything goes according to the plan, this trip marks Putin’s eighth visit to the United States during the presidency he has served for over 20 years in two separate terms since 1999.

USA Today is set to offer live coverage when Trump meets Putin in Alaska. You can watch it on the embedded below or on the USA Today YouTube channel.

What might be discussed?

Trump said there will be “very serious consequences” if Putin does not agree to end the Ukrainian war when he meets, and his summit with the Russian president will “set a table” for the Putin Zelensky meeting where he may be present.

In an August 14 interview with Brian Kilmeade, a conservative talk show host on Fox News Radio, Trump called the meeting a “chess game” and predicted that he could fail to advance peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump has raised the idea of a “land exchange” between Russia and Ukraine, claiming that the two countries must make concessions to each other to end the war. However, Zelenskyy firmly rejected the idea of giving away all the land to Russia. “Ukrainians don’t give their land to the occupyers,” Zelensky said in a video posted on X on August 9th.
