The cracker barrel has a new logo. Customers want “Uncle Herschel”

0

Cracker Barrel offers a minimalist and modern redesign of its iconic fork logo, but some customers and Wall Street traders have sent it back into the kitchen.

The 55-year-old restaurant and retail chain based in Lebanon, Tennessee announced changes to logo, menu and diner decorations on August 19th in a campaign titled “All the More.” The redesign eliminates several familiar items, including the “Uncle Herschel,” which has been part of the logo since 1977, the farmer in overalls, and the images of the cracker barrel itself.

The change in the logo caused an online backlash from customers. Some of them lamented the loss of “Uncle Herschel” like family. The conservative group accused the company of “waking up.”

Wall Street traders also disapproved. Cracker Barrel lost nearly $100 million in market value during trading on August 21. Prices began to recover on August 22nd.

How did you change the logo for the cracker barrel?

Old logo: The farmer-type man in overalls known as the “Uncle Herschel” sits in a rattan chair leaning against a soda cracker barrel. The word “cracker barrel” appears in the universe, shaped like a picto bean. This pays homage to one of the chain’s first side dishes.

New logo: Farmers, chairs and cracker barrels are gone with the term “old country store.” The “cracker barrel” typeface is more modern, with the stylized image of the barrel on its side replaced by a focus bean.

Not changed: New logo holds a brown lettering color scheme on a yellow yellow background.

Why did the cracker barrel change its logo?

Sales of cracker barrels have been declining in recent years. In the second quarter of 2024, customer traffic declined by 4% and retail sales fell by 5%. Retail sales fell 3.8% in the third quarter of 2025.

The “enhanced brand look” is intended to modernize the company’s brand, executives said. This intent includes moving the restaurant from a rich decor of nostalgia to something more modern and less messy. The change to the logo reflects that.

“We believe in the country hospitality, the spirit that always defines us. Our stories have not changed. Our values have not changed,” said Sarah Moore, chief marketing officer at Cracker Barrel, in a statement.

How has the cracker barrel logo changed over the years?

The character of “Uncle Herschel,” also known as the “Old Timer,” came from the sketch during the logo’s redesign, according to her daily diet.

“Uncle Herschel” was a real person. Herschel McCartney, the uncle of Dan Evins, the founder of Cracker Barrels, was the company’s well-intentioned ambassador. But that’s not his logo.

“The logo was created with napkins by napkin Bill Holly in 1977, and was aimed at creating nostalgia in overalls wearing old timers,” according to Cracker Barrel Insider.

The logo, introduced in 1977, has been changed over the years, but remains essentially the same.

Where is the Cracker Barrel Restaurant located?

Why do businesses change their logos?

According to dwplacesolutions.com, companies change their logos for a variety of purposes. Here’s the reason:

Brand identity.

I avoid being outdated.

Transparency across digital platforms.

Rebranding after the crisis.

These communities pay for your home. Is it worth moving?

These communities want to make a profit as rising housing costs and high interest rates drive people further out of the city centre.

play

When David Gaffney’s lease in Oakland, California ended last spring, she was “come in the moment of Jesus.”

The 42-year-old loved living near his sister in town, but struggled to find a place along with the creature comforts she and her 13-year-old daughter wanted. An apartment with outdoor space and unit laundry costs over $3,000 a month.

Disappointed by the real estate market and ready for a change, Gaffney Googled “towns that pay you to move.” She came across the program in Lukes County, Kansas, where she moved with $5,000 in cash, and offered numerous other benefits, including income tax exemptions, a pass to state parks and lunch with the local economic development director.

“For me, working from home, I have the quality of life, raising my own kids, and having the space to develop this house, this garden, this garden. “I couldn’t afford to do many other places.”

Over 100 programs that provide economic incentives to move to cities and states across the country have driven my move on online sites over the past decade. Some existed before the Covid-19 pandemic, but most of them came at the rise of remote work. They are surged as housing costs rise and high interest rates push people even further from the city centre.

People like Gaffney who use these offers say the extra cash and incentives have made them more comfortable with their quality of life.

The community that implements many of the programs of the original rusty manufacturing hub says people firstly say that the economic development approach has helped increase tax revenue, organic growth and the long-standing revitalization of the local downtown.

For every $100,000 in the revenues of the relocated workers, the local community enjoys a new economic output of $83,000 each year.

“As opposed to trying to attract businesses, these cities are relocating or hiring individuals, and retrieving is huge,” said Evan Hock, founder of Makemymove. Even if workers start to be called back to their offices, the site has registered over 150,000 remote workers since its launch in 2020, and has grown every year since its launch in 2020.

Mover wants to “buy life”

Gaffney moved to Stockton, Kansas, in place of other towns near the Nebraska family, for the benefit the county provided. The $5,000 temporary incentive covers travel expenses primarily, and gym, golf and state park memberships were fantastic, Gaffney said.

However, the biggest advantage had nothing to do with the offers she sought. When Gaffney lost her job in November, she didn’t have to scramble to understand how to pay bills as long as she needed elsewhere.

“I don’t live on my salary because my mortgage, including insurance and taxes, is one third of what I paid in California and half of what I paid when I lived in Missouri,” Gaffney said.

Matthew Mekek, 27, moved from Huntington Beach, California to Bloomington, Indiana, as well as his boyfriend.

Mekech was considering several different communities in the Midwest, but was persuaded to choose Bloomington, where his partner’s parents live, for the “new resident” package. The giveaways include three years of membership to the town’s coworking space, access to entrepreneurial programming, season tickets to local theatres, and other perks totaling $8,000.

The benefits of networking have been a “huge plus” for Mekek, creative marketing manager at Juicy Chain Earth Bar. He works on photography and design projects and has a self-proclaimed “entrepreneurship.”

Another perk: cheap home costs. In California, Mekek said he and his partner qualify for low-income housing because he and his partner earned less than $115,000. They paid $2,400 for a small apartment. Now they are building a three-bedroom, 3,000 square foot home overlooking his partner’s family farm for $380,000.

Avid climber, Mekek said he still has access to cliffs and trails, and his dog could “run around and chase squirrels” in his backyard. Bloomington, home to Indiana University, also has a small LGBTQ+ community, Mekek said.

One drawback: He misses urban culture.

“We had a Broadway show that will be in town for two days in October and we had an alarm set on our phones, so we got tickets,” Mekek joked.

“It’s just that I’m not like before. It takes a slow pace in life. I’m going to walk and hike just outside my back door, although I had in California. For at least a while,” Mekek said.

Cities see “what to promote”

It’s not just about movers who benefit from the program. Cities and towns that offer incentives also say they are seeing big returns.

For more than a century, Newton Iowa’s economy has not revolved around Maytag washer and dryer factories. When the company closed its facility in 2010, the city lost an estimated 2,000 jobs.

Newton’s lifelong resident, Bruce Shaw, remembers the massive volumes of Exodus and the dilapidated empty houses they left behind. He said the city was a “double attack” due to the 2008 housing crisis.

A survey conducted in the early 2010s depicted harsh paintings for the future of the city. The population was older, young families were separated, and there were no jobs.

“A lot of people thought that after Maytag (Newton) was basically a black hole and almost dying,” Showalter said.

So in 2014, the city began purchasing dangerous and dilapidated properties and began selling land to developers at a low cost. They then began offering $10,000 in cash incentives to those who bought new homes worth more than $240,000.

Above all, the program gave Newton “what to promote” and “what to promote.” Today, he considers it an important reason why the city avoided disastrous predictions after Maytag left.

Over the past decade, the city has issued 132 building permits for single-family homes, leading to an estimated tax increase of $37 million, Showalter said. Newton’s population hit a record high at the 2020 census, and Showalter said about half of those incentived to housing were new to the city.

Tulsa payment template

One of the biggest programs to provide incentives to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2019 is funded by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, providing $10,000 to selected remote workers and travelling to and staying in Tulsa for at least a year.

The goal was to reduce brain drainage and reinforce the city’s knowledge-based workforce when the programme began.

“We made $10,000 in cash, access to coworking spaces, community promises and participant offers to remote workers. As a result, our hope was to attract knowledge workers to the city and diversify the workforce of workers.”

However, the city has also seen the effects of the spill. An independent study published earlier this year by the We Upjohn Institute for Employment Research found that each dollar spent on the program brought $4 benefits to existing Tulsa residents.

So far, the program has welcomed over 3,500 people into the city.

Research author Timothy Baltic writes that the program is “a more benefit ratio than many business tax incentives” and is “a relatively inexpensive way to create local employment.”

Organizers like Harlan see Tulsa’s success as a blueprint for how Midwest cities can begin to grow and reduce population decline.

“It can change the notion that talent belongs to the coast,” Harlan said. “We can show you that you can make an impact here in the middle of here, and there are ways cities like Tulsa can improve your quality of life without sacrificing tons.”

Country American braces for hospital closures after Medicaid is cut

0

Rural Americans have historically relied on Medicaid more than people in densely populated areas.

play

Penny Blue was walking home in 2013 as she climbed the stairs at Union Hall, Virginia, when a blood vessel burst into her brain.

“When that happened, I actually felt a pop in my head,” she told USA Today. After sitting down and calling an ambulance, she quickly arrived towards the hospital 15 minutes’ walk away, where she was stable. She flew by helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was in intensive care for 13 days.

If the same thing happens again, Blue may not be so lucky.

If a rural hospital down the road is closed, the nearest hospital is at least an hour away in Roanoke. The 65-year-old said she saw statistics on survival and quality of life potential and told her she had to go that far. They’re not good.

“Time, minutes, seconds, whether you live or die, and if you live, if you live, the quality of your life is different,” Blue said.

Her concern is not idle. A rural hospital like the one nearby, she was already struggling financially before President Donald Trump took office in January. However, the GOP tax and expenditure bill, signed into law on July 4, has made the issue much worse, and could speed up closures across the country, according to hospital executives and healthcare professionals.

Trump says he’s only reducing Medicaid, the government insurance program for the elderly, and “waste, fraud and abuse” from people with disabilities. But these cuts force the state to compensate for state fund disparities when they are already cash-bound or allow rural hospitals to close.

“The federal government has put us in a very painful position,” Democrat Colorado Sen. Dylan Roberts told USA Today.

Risk rural health care

Rural Americans have historically relied on Medicaid more than people in densely populated areas. Additionally, rural healthcare providers and facilities often require Medicaid refunds to stay open.

Advocacy groups estimate that 700 rural hospitals (about one in three) and many rural clinics and nursing homes are at risk of closures over the next few years. Estimates from KFF predict that cuts to federal Medicaid spending, approved by the new law, will exceed $155 billion in rural areas over the next decade.

A map created by advocacy groups shows that most of these at-risk hospitals and clinics are located in Republican-owned House districts.

Without any outward indications of how close she had come to die over a decade ago, Blue is frustrated with politicians who tell people in rural communities not to worry about hospitals and clinics that could be shut down due to their decisions.

“I told someone (don’t) not to panic in the aneurysm… count every second,” Blue said.

Cuts and closures have already begun

Reductions to Medicaid and SNAP will not be fully effective until after the 2026 midterm elections, but the healthcare system has often budgeted a year or two in the future, and has already begun closures.

In southwest Nebraska, the McCook-based community hospital said Trump signed the bill and closed the clinic in Curtis, which is about 900 towns, would cite financial challenges, including Medicaid cuts.

The hospital is also considering whether more people will choose to go without health insurance when some premiums skyrocket this fall.

The law ends the enhanced premium tax credits of Obama-era Affordable Care Act. This means that the 24 million people who are insured through the Affordable Care Act market will almost certainly see their costs skyrocket.

“There are a lot of hospitals in rural and low-income areas that have been running for a long time with very slim margins, and we’re seeing the hard-working people this year starting this year,” said Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy.

An analysis of hospital financial vulnerability conducted by the University of North Carolina’s Cecil G. Sheps Health Services Research Center for Health Service Research has identified the largest figures in Kentucky, Louisiana and California.

On August 7, Providence Health System announced plans to close clinics, treatment and rehabilitation programs across two Washington counties, citing “multiple pressures,” including state and federal Medicare, Medicare cuts, and higher costs from inflation and tariffs.

“These headwinds will only be enhanced if the reductions to the critical safety net programmes included in the recently passed HR1 are also known as the One Beautiful Bill Act,” the Healthcare System said in a statement.

Federal Fund

In response to bipartisan concerns about the future of rural hospitals, the Senate added $50 billion in funding for the new “rural health transformation program.”

The fund distributes $10 billion a year for five years, with half split evenly across states that apply. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are authorized to distribute the rest.

The law doesn’t require money to go to rural hospitals only, but some of the nation’s largest medical groups say it’s not enough to cover Medicaid cuts, an increase in uninsured numbers and new restrictions on payments.

Republicans in the White House and Congress say the fund will protect rural hospitals.

“Rural hospitals are fine,” Sen. John Tune, a Republican from South Dakota, told Fox News “A Talk to Martha MacCallum and Martha Macalum on July 9th.”

What can the state do?

Colorado state senator Roberts said his rural members are always on the verge of what will happen if their clinics and hospitals close. He focuses on mental health, dental and other specialized clinics in the poorest and most rural areas of his district.

“It’s going to hit everyone and many of these clinics were already operating on margins before this bill was passed, so they certainly fear that they’re going to be next,” he said.

In Craig, Colorado, a community of 9,060 people is moving from coal mines to a more diverse economy.

“If there’s no hospital, people won’t stay. It’s important to make sure that such communities can be migrated and that they can remain a vibrant place,” Roberts said.

The local hospital closed its obstetric practices with OB/Gyn a few years ago. This means that women have to drive for an hour and give birth to a Colorado steamship. Roberts said he told him the hospital was considering closing other practices.

To stop the expected bleeding, Colorado has established a provider stabilization fund for $25 million over the next two fiscal years.

“It’s going to help, but it’s never going to be made up,” Roberts said, up to $800 million Medicaid the state expects to lose every year.

Michigan Senate Budget Committee Chairman Sarah Anthony said the future of rural hospitals is part of the “coldness” and “tension” of the last two-hour committee hearing. Michigan expects the cuts to pierce $5.6 billion in rural Michigan budgets over the next decade, she said.

The state is already working on many of the responsibilities the federal government has given them.

“As a state legislator, there’s not enough world to fill that hole.”

“What can the nation do to alleviate harm? There’s really not much,” she said.

Community-wide issues

Dennis Paraschack, a retired nurse in township in Plains, Pennsylvania, is closing hospitals, clinics or nursing homes.

“Having that country hospital in the area is a real lifesaver,” she said.

Politicians who are talking about using cuts to trim waste and abuse from Medicaid may not be thinking about the “disastrous situation” that those cuts mean for nursing homes, Paraschack said. Medicaid is the largest payer for long-term care facilities, paying more than 60% of nursing homes nationwide.

When rural nursing homes close, patients often have to move in with families who have no skills or training to provide watch care to people at the end of their lives, she said.

Paraschack said that the community loses local hospitals, which puts more stress on hospitals in other areas. They will be more crowded, patients will skip care until health issues become more severe and difficult to treat, and remaining health providers will have difficulty recruiting staff, Parashac said.

“It really has a snowman effect,” she said.

Gaza’s biggest city is in chaos ahead of the impending Israeli attack

0

Two years ago, Gaza’s biggest city spread to life. Classes were plagued by school children, markets were full of shoppers, and beachside cafes provided rest for those who escaped the stress of the besieged enclave.

Gaza City boasts a rich history, has lived for thousands of years and is shaped by successive acquisitions from ancient civilizations. It serves as an important landing site for Palestinians who were evacuated during Israel’s establishment in 1948, and the site, which is millions of years old, records its past.

It was therefore not surprising that when the Islamic extremist group Hamas seized control of the strip in 2007, it effectively chose Gaza city as capital.

The years of conflict, crippling blockades and Hamas’ dictatorial rules have stoked lives for the Palestinians. However, institutions established by extremists with the help of regional governments such as Qatar and the robust UN aid system have given some structure to the strip’s tired population.

With the established underground smuggling system, Gaza city gave it a taste of the outside world in the siege of land, sky and sea imposed by its Israeli and Egyptian neighbours and Egypt. Living in Gaza city is not easy, half of the population is unemployed and Hamas police are strictly patrolling the streets, but you can get a matcha latte on your way to a yoga studio or relax in the park.

Today, what once was the cultural and financial hub of the enclave lies in the lawless abandonment that was devastated by months of brutal Israeli attacks caused by Hamas’ fatal attacks on Israel almost two years ago. And once again, Palestinians in Gaza’s historic city are fearing survival as Israeli plans to launch new attacks in densely populated areas to eliminate Hamas’ militants hidden underground.

After brutal retaliation for Israel’s Hamas attacks, normal life on coastal enclaves fell apart.

Hundreds of thousands of evacuations in crushed buildings in the city are left to dodge for themselves after the collapse of Hamas police equipment. Their future is unknown, and Gaza residents are hearing news of the next food cargo, or the sudden sound of salted trickles from bathroom pipes.

Israel does not allow journalists to Gaza. CNN spoke with some of Gaza city residents and painted pictures of what the city would look like during the war.

Due to the attacks of tens of thousands of Israel, many towers of tiled rubs lie in the city, with sewage flooding the streets. Black smoke from burning plastic and wood used by residents for fuel blows away the sounds of Israeli drones and overhead drones amid sporadic explosions in nearby airstrikes.

A chaotic net of wires from the street generator provides power to those who can afford to pay. The market shows a random assortment of mercilessly priced groceries that may have been plundered by criminal gangs from several aid trucks Israel allows for strips.

Hospitals and pharmacies no longer function, and hygiene products remain rarity for Palestinians. Palestinians are invasive of lice, lack of vitamins, and their food is left sick and vulnerable.

As the night falls, armed thugs roam the streets, and the family picks up guns to protect themselves. Cash can be transferred to Gaza via an informal banking system, but those trying to withdraw it will be forced to pay a fee of up to 50% to the individuals and groups who control the money supply.

Hamas was once very visible on the streets of Gaza city and now does not exist. The political office, the organization’s local government and police station have been destroyed, and the extremists remain hidden.

“Their bitch sons have no control. They don’t look like they used to, but sometimes they find them suddenly appearing.

Residents who did not provide their full name due to fear of Hamas’ retaliation said the group had no visible power and civilians didn’t know how the group would organize.

“They don’t have a specific place where they come together. They have their own special ways of communicating and how to organize… We don’t know how they will do that,” Abu Mohamed said of Hamas.

When an agreement was reached with Israel for the ceasefire and the release of hostages in January, Hamas armed members were filled with full uniforms in public squares in Gaza City. It reminded Hamas that the group was still alive a few months after Israel tried to destroy it.

In the weeks that followed, Hamas choreographed the ceremony to parade strength during the scheduled release of the Israeli hostage filmed on October 7th. The ceremony threatened to withdraw from the agreement because it was furious with Israel.

In one of the latest videos circulating on social media and surrounded by Earth by CNN, an armed group of masked men chanted for the Al-Kassam Brigade, the armed wing of Hamas, carrying automatic weapons. The video, released in August, showed masked extremists setting fire to vehicles and threatening “thieves and businessmen” stealing aid.

The subgroup, self-styled as “al-Radea,” or “deterrence,” said in its first statement that a gang was formed to “prevent businessmen from monopolizing” by Hamas security devices and working with Israel in Gaza.

gazacity-sat-image-port-before-2023-06-04.png
gazacity-sat-image-port-after-2025-08-03.png

Al Radea claimed he executed people from a gang cooperating with Israel, including six people in the southern Khan Eunice last month.

“Remember, Hamas is not a static institution or a person. They started with a certain number of fighters on October 7th, and were given the destruction and death within Gaza, so they also made recruitments that were there and replaced the people who were there.”

It is nearly impossible to establish an accurate picture of the number of Hamas militants remaining in Gaza city.

“Hamas is not a unified unit, but their government is elected in Gaza and they have an institution to which they are responsible. Their military wings do not operate like a unified army… They act effectively like rebels of an elected government in the midst of war, they do not play by rules,” Prissas said.

The acquisition and occupation of the largest city in northern Gaza, which Netanyahu said was one of Hamas’s last bases, demands that, in addition to what has already been called, bring an additional 60,000 reserves to the Israeli army and extend the service of another 20,000 people.

Israeli sources this week said the military would give Palestinians about two months to evacuate densely populated areas before the attacks begin, setting an iconic deadline for October 7, the second year of the war.

IDF soldiers prepare tanks at the Gaza border in Israel on August 22, 2025.

Another Israeli military official was unable to provide Gaza city with numbers on Hamas troops, but officials said the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) had not ventured deeply into the area in nearly two years of war.

What is expected is that the troops will face enemies with time to dig under Gaza city using its extensive tunnel network

“They know we’re coming,” the official said, “They’re prepared for it.”

Hamas’ “subways” called Israel are more than just a uniform tunnel system, officials explained. Much more complex than the expected IDF, it has bigger strategic hubs and branches and smaller tactical tunnels for quick movements and surprise attacks.

Once Gaza City evacuated, the IDF is likely to attack a set of expanded targets in densely urban areas, officials have added sites that were not hit previously due to the density of civilians.

However, Israel’s movement to receive calls from governments and aid groups. The government is concerned about the Israeli military’s actions over the past two years, amid high civilian casualties, reporting war crimes, human rights violations and blockade aid.

“It will probably take several months for the Israeli army to enter every building, clear it and hit every tunnel. Is that possible? Yes?” said Prissas.

Japan and Korea: Friends born from circumstances

0

Tokyo, Japan
–

History was made this weekend.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stopped in both Washington, DC and Tokyo, making his first overseas trip for bilateral diplomacy. However, unlike his predecessor, Lee did not visit the United States first. Instead, his first stop was in Japan – a former colony in Korea.

It issued its first joint statement in 17 years, following the bilateral summit between Lee and Japan’s Prime Minister Isba, Tokyo and Seoul. We pledge deeper cooperation on AI, trade and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. They also announced plans to launch a joint task force to tackle shared challenges, including aging populations and declining birth rates.

But what stood out from the summit was not the one signed. It was a shared smile and warm words between the two leaders.

“This is our second meeting and we feel like close friends,” South Korea’s Lee said of his Japanese counterpart.

From hostility to familiarity, impressive changes in tone are impossible to ignore.

The Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, which lasted over 30 years in the first half of the 20th century, has long cast a shadow over relations. In 2023, Lee criticized his predecessor for attending a landmark summit with Japan, calling him a “doll” from Tokyo.

However, since taking office two months ago, Lee has been in a more practical tone. August 15th – The day of South Korea’s liberation from Japan’s rule – he called Japan an “essential partner” for economic growth.

This recent thawing in relationships primarily reflects not only diplomacy, but what is happening in the western Pacific.

The two countries are currently navigating unstable relations with Washington, with US President Donald Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy putting once stable alliances in question. He imposed tariffs, demanded greater defence spending, and urged both countries to pay more to US military hosts. Now, South Korea’s formerly revived alliance with the US has long been the State Department’s mantra and not robust.

“The problem is Trump’s volatileness and trading diplomacy are unsettling for everyone,” Jeffrey Kingston, a professor of Asian Studies at Tokyo Temple University, told CNN.

“After Ukraine’s betrayal, do you think many American allies wonder what US security really means?”

In Japan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is often seen as a warning story. Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida famously said: “Today’s Ukraine could become East Asia tomorrow.” Both Tokyo and Seoul are increasingly concerned about the growth of North Korean nuclear weapons and the deep ties with Russia in the Ukrainian invasion, where North Korean soldiers have acquired the benefits of direct battlefield experience.

Another looming concern about Japan and South Korea is the potential conflict over Taiwan. As China strengthens its military operations near the island, fears are growing that tensions could become involved in conflict at their gateways. Will the US intervene? Or maybe Trump, or the future US president, would be trying to make a deal with an authoritarian leader without Taiwan in the room, as we saw at the recent Alaska Summit?

Beyond security concerns, Trump’s trade war has rattled both economies as well.

Japan and South Korea have each signed to delay the worst tariffs, but the hikes on auto parts, steel and aluminum taxes have been hit hard by economies built around the automotive and technology industries.

At the same time, both leaders need to carefully manage their relationship with Beijing, the top trading partner of both countries. Neither accepts Trump’s conflicted stance towards XI, but they must navigate Washington’s demands without compromising their financial interests.

Already in face to Trump, Isba may have offered Lee’s advice on how to manage the president’s mercury style. During a visit to the White House in February, the Japanese leader blatted Trump and said, “I was very excited to see such a celebrity on TV.” Though Isba’s tone shifted after months of tariff pressure and domestic criticism over the lack of signed transactions. “Trump,” he later said, “I’m not a normal person. He’s someone who changes the rules.”

One of the early obstacles in this budding partnership with South Korea could be Isba’s resignation. The Prime Minister has put pressure on him domestically to intervene after losing a majority in both chambers of parliament.

If he is set aside, it is important for him to pass this rare spirit of cooperation to his successor – ensuring that new goodwill between nations continues to grow.

Venezuela’s Maduro has called on China to put pressure on the US. Will Beijing answer?

0

Amid acute escalation of tensions between the US and Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro mentioned China, the largest economic rival in the US, during his speech on domestic education.

While talking about a tutorial to learn how to do new things during the closing of “Bolivar Teacher’s First Educational Conference”, Maduro stopped to present his new mobile phone.

Maduro said he communicated with Xi through that new phone call by satellite.

“You want to learn something, you want to look for a tutorial. You want to learn how to use the camera that the cameras the cameras have there, you put “camera tutorials, etc.” I want to learn how to handle this new Huawei phone (Chinese flagship brand of mobile devices). This is the most advanced in the world.

“Ni Hao, Ni Hao (Hello). Xiexie, Xiexie (Thank you),” the Venezuelan president quickly added, pretending to call in the mandarin.

While that may seem minor, it was yet another indication of Venezuela’s need to publicize a settlement with China amidst tensions with the US.

In addition to Xi Jinping’s “gifts,” there were other nods to China last week, including diplomatic visits and messages from Asian countries. Both took place on Thursday.

Maduro met with China’s Venezuelan ambassador, Lang Fu, to celebrate the progress between the two countries, particularly in the economy.

“I am pleased with my mutual cooperation with Sister China this year in 2025, especially with progress in economic, science, technology and artificial intelligence projects,” Maduro wrote on social media.

Since being appointed as Venezuela ambassador in May 2023, Hu has joined in celebrating the relationship between the Latin American country and economic progress and criticizing pressure from Washington.

Last year, on the sidelines of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Venezuela, Hu criticized the US “unilateral enforcement measures.”

“China and Venezuela are united in defending the rights and interests of developing countries in the face of unilateral US enforcement measures to build a more fair and equitable multipolar world based on mutual respect,” Hu said.

These words from the Chinese ambassador came at the same time that the US raised concerns about the arrest of opposition activists ahead of Venezuela’s 2024 presidential election.

Maduro later declared the winner by election officials under the strict control of the Unified Socialist Party (PSUV) of Maduro in Venezuela.

A man waving a Venezuelan flag when protesters clash with police officers during the protests against President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas on July 29, 2024, the day after Venezuela's presidential election.

Opposition parties questioned the election process and claimed that the candidate won the vote, which earned many support from the international community. The Maduro government ensures that the election is legal, although detailed results have never been made public.

Beijing shared concerns following the recent deployment of US troops in the Caribbean area near Venezuela.

“China opposes any movement that violates the objectives and principles of the UN Charter and the sovereignty and security of the country. It opposes the use of force or threats in international relations and the interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs. We asked about the issue at a press conference.

This week, the Trump administration carried out major military deployments in waters surrounding Latin America and the Caribbean as part of a fierce effort to combat drug cartels, two U.S. defense secretaries told CNN.

The deployment comes to help the US harden the drug trafficking story about Maduro and his government – including nuclear-powered attack submarines, an additional P8 Poseidon reconnaissance jet, several destroyers, and a guided missile cruiser as part of the mission.

Maduro announced the deployment of 4.5 million militias across national territory, saying “the empire will not touch the sacred ground of Venezuela,” minimizing the country’s “threat to peace.”

The president assured his country that he had the ability to defend against conflict.

“Let the world know, let the empire know: Venezuela has more needs than today, so we are living in peace and we are going to continue in peace,” Maduro said on the TV. “We have the strength of David and Goliath,” he added before recounting details of the biblical story.

Meanwhile, White House press chief Caroline Leavitt said the US is preparing to “use all the resources of that power” after being consulted about its deployment with 4,000 military personnel in the Caribbean, with the goal of “controlling the flow of drugs into the country and bringing the person responsible to justice.”

US Department of Defense officials told CNN that the deployed ship had not been ordered to head to the edge of Venezuela’s territorial sea.

The relationship with Beijing has been commercially useful for Caracas for some time, and has been in a deep political and economic crisis.

“The support that Venezuela has (from China), especially at the economic level, has helped prevent this deepening of the deep economic crisis,” Jose Antonio Hernandez Macias, a researcher in Latin American Studies at the University of Mexico (UNAM), told CNN.

China has a trade surplus with Venezuela. It exports approximately US$3.45 billion in products to South American countries, but according to updated Economic Complexation (OEC) data by 2023, there is no $2.71 billion in surplus imported for the Asian economy.

In this sense, China has benefited economically from its relationship with Venezuela, and the OEC adds that its main export product to the world is oil.

Meanwhile, the US is in a trade deficit with Venezuela, and the products exported to Venezuela export more products than that. Trade balances support Venezuela at over US$1.3 billion, according to OEC data.

Therefore, Venezuela is a strategic ally to China in the economy, and is trying to value its interest in the region by showing its stance towards the US deployment, UNAM experts said.

“The oil that exists in Essequibo, the territory that Venezuela and Guyana dispute, plays an important role in this issue (…) Not only is it exploited by the US, there are also Chinese companies in the region,” explained Hernandez Macias.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will answer a reporter's questions in the State Department's treaty office on August 6th.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a statement by the Guyana government on Friday. It expressed “serious concerns” about the threats to local peace and security brought about by transnational organized crime and narcoterrorism, often accompanied by criminal networks like the Venezuelan sun cartel.

Recently, the Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that Maduro is the leader of the Sands cartel criminal group, doubled its pay by $50 million for information that led to the arrest of Venezuelan president. Additionally, the US has designated the Sands cartel as an international terrorist organization. The charges against Maduro over allegations of drug trafficking, repeatedly denied by the Venezuelan government, are nothing new. They date back to 2020, when the US pointed Maduro as the leader of the Sands cartel, initially providing $15 million for information that led to his arrest.

Amid this new conflict between the US and Venezuela, “there is that there are conditions that not only exist to defend the Venezuelan government, but also to have access to energy resources throughout the region,” Hernandez Macias added.

On Friday, Reuters reported that Chinese private companies have begun to misuse two Venezuela oil fields, and planned to invest more than $1 billion in a project that will produce 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day by the end of 2026 under a 20-year production stock agreement in 2024.

Although there are mutual economic benefits, according to Gabriel Pastor, an analyst at Uruguay-based think tank De Estudios de la Realidad Económicay Social (Ceres), Maduro is isolated from the world, and China’s position in the deployment of the US military speaks volume worldwide.

“(China’s position) says something everyone can expect, but that doesn’t mean that China will intervene in the conflict by supporting Venezuela,” the pastor told CNN. This is a “political correct statement” that changes nothing for Venezuela, as “no concrete action” has been announced to support the Latin American country.

Jinu and Rumi’s Ahn Hyo-Seop, Netflix’s “Kpop Demon Hunters” success

0

play

  • Ahn Hyo-Seop, known for his role in K-Dramas, voices the male lead in Netflix’s hit film Kpop Demon Hunters.
  • The film’s success comes from its positive message, K-pop soundtrack and unique storyline.
  • This project marks Ahn’s first English voice acting role and the biggest project ever.

Actor Ahn Hyo-Seop loved animation as a child, so being part of Netflix’s surprise blockbuster KPOP Demon Hunters was a perfect moment for him.

“I thought the story had this very special energy that I would like to be part of the entire journey,” Anne, 30, tells USA Today.

The trip was a quick ride to the top. The PG-rate animated film about the K-Pop Girl group using songs and swords to save the world hit Netflix on June 20th and surged almost immediately to the top ten streamers. In history.

For Anne, who voices male Reed Jin-woo along with female Reed Lumi (Arden Cho), the fundamental success of “kpop demon hunters” is her message.

“Everyone makes a mistake. Everyone has something they want to hide or undo,” he says. “Sometimes, the biggest obstacle is not the world, it’s us, and Jinwoo and Rumi face it. I think they actually grow together and that’s something that many people can relate to.”

Beyond the film’s message, Ahn calls K-Pop Vibe and Original Songs a major feat.

“The sound is really amazing. It was really cool to see K-Pop songs that really touched people all over the world.”

“Kpop Demon Hunters” has made Ahn Hyo-Seop milestone stand out

“Kpop Demon Hunters” is Ahn’s first animated film and still his biggest role, but not his first brush of fame. The Korean-born actor, who spent some of his youths in Canada, has built a global fanbase for 10 years as a lead actor in some of the most talked about K-dramas, including “Romantic” Season 2, “Business Proposals” and “Time Called You.”

He was drawn to “Kpop Demon Hunters,” and the script “really grabbed me,” he says, presenting a new challenge.

“To express everything in my voice alone without facial expressions or body was honestly a challenge at first. I had to try different tones and versions of Jinwoo to get there.

It was difficult to portray a character like Jinwoo, a demon who turned into a man who was troubled by his past.

“When you’re a demon, that’s not something you think about every day, right?” he says with a laugh. “I didn’t know how to approach it, but Jinuu’s backstory, his wounds, his doubts, the emotional weight he carries – I felt that he was connected naturally to him.

“KPOP Demon Hunters” also marked Ahn’s first English project.

“I hadn’t used English for a long time (after that) and I haven’t lived in Korea for about a decade,” he says. “It was pretty rusty at first, but English is a language that I actually grew up in, and I had the dream of using it one day.

Anne is just as excited about the future of “kpop demon hunters” as her fans

Like the film’s vast fan base, Ahn is caught up in Jinwoo and Rumi’s will.

“I’ll stun them too,” he says with a laugh. “I think it’s about the pain and pain they had. I feel it’s about the company, so you can’t solve your problems on your own. You had to have someone by your side and they had the biggest connection.”

Netflix has yet to announce a sequel, but given its international and sustained success, it is likely that at least one film will be lit up in green. Just this week, Netflix announced that it will be screening “KPOP Demon Hunters” at Select US Theaters from August 23rd to 24th.

If there’s a second film, will Jinwoo and Rumi reunite?

“I mean, Jinwoo gave him his soul, so he never imagined how he would come back,” Anne says. “As someone who loves Jinwoo as a fan, I’m certainly hoping to see him come back, but that’s not up to me.”

Fans continue to show their love for Jinwoo. Ahn pointed out that in Korea people actually left flowers at Namsan Tower, where the characters died.

And no matter what happens to Jinwoo and Rumi, Anne is excited about the future of “KPOP Demon Hunters.”

“I hope this franchise continues to encourage people to embrace their shadows and flaws and still move forward. I am also a huge fan right now.

Tropical Storm Fernando is formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Where are you heading?

The storm is expected to “traverse the open air in Bermuda and the subtropical North Atlantic,” the National Hurricane Centre said.

play

Tropical Storm Fernando is formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is the sixth-name storm of Atlantic hurricane season.

Fernando, which became a tropical storm on Saturday, August 23rd, was heading north in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The storm was expected to “traverse the open air in Bermuda east and the subtropical North Atlantic,” the National Hurricane Centre said.

The news comes days after Hurricane Erin was bolstered by a Monster Category 5 storm, breaking through the ocean along the East Coast, leading to eroded beaches and coastal flooding. Accuweather says Fernando is expected to intensify northward when it moves north, but at some point it could become a hurricane, but I don’t think its impact on the US is that important.

Forecasters have seen the system develop for days and say it will not have a major impact on the US mainland.

“At this point, no direct wind and rain effects are expected in the US,” said Alex Dasilva, lead hurricane expert at Accuweather.

“The heart of hurricane season is beginning to get hot,” Dasilva pointed out. The Atlantic hurricane season is expected to peak around September 10th.

“We expect the second half of the hurricane season to be more active than the first half.”

Tropical Storm Fernando Pastracker

This predicted track shows the most likely path in the center of the storm. The full width of the storm or its impact is not shown, and the storm center can move out of the cone for up to 33% of the time.

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes originate in the tropical regions above warm waters. Thunderstorm clusters can develop across the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are correct, clusters are swirling into tropical waves and storms known as tropical depression.

Tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm when its sustained wind speed reaches 39 mph. When the wind reaches 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Get ready for a hurricane now

Potentially delaying preparations for salvation can mean waiting until it’s too late. “Get disaster supply while the shelves are still in stock and flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period, so get that insurance inspection early,” NOAA recommends.

  • Establish an evacuation plan: If you are at risk of a hurricane, you will need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to plan where you will go and how you will get there.
  • Assemble disaster supply: Whether you’re evacuating or evacuating, you’ll need supplies not only to get through the storm, but also for the potentially long aftermath.
  • Get an insurance inspection and document your property: Contact your insurance company or agent now to ask for an insurance inspection and make sure you have sufficient insurance to repair or replace your home or belongings. Remember that home insurance and tenant insurance don’t cover floods, so you’ll need a separate insurance for that. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or through your national flood insurance program. Flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period, so take action now.
  • Create a family communication plan: NOAA just said that you took the time to write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family. Determine where family gatherings are to be located and include out-of-town locations in the event of evacuation.
  • It strengthens your home: Now is the time to improve your home’s ability to withstand the effects of a hurricane. Trim the wood; attach storm shutters, accordion shutters, and/or impact glass. Seal the wall opening.

More than 20,000 cans of 7UP were reminiscent of. This is why.

According to a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notification, after thousands of cans labeled “zero sugar” were found to incorrectly contain “complete sugar products,” independent bottlers voluntarily recall certain sugar-free 7UP sodas.

According to the notice, on July 31, Buffalo Rock Company, a Birmingham, Alabama-based bottler, issued a recall of more than 20,000 aluminum cans of 7UP Zero Sugar Tropical Soda on July 31.

The soda was distributed in Alabama, Florida and Georgia, the notice states.

USA Today contacted Keurig Dr Pepper, owner of the 7UP brand and formula, and Pepsico, Soda’s international distributor, on Saturday, August 23rd, but did not receive a response.

Which 7ups were recalled?

According to an FDA notification, 1,954 cases of 12-pack 7UP Zero Sugar Tropical Soda were recalled in a 12-liquid ounce can. The total number of cans affected by the recall is 23,448.

The UPC for the can is 078000037975, and the UPC for the cardboard carton containing soda is 078000037982.

What should consumers do with the recalled 7UP?

The recall notification does not explain what consumers should do if they buy or own a recalled 7UP. For most recalled products, the FDA suggests that consumers must review the recall notice for certain instructions and stop using the product before returning or disposing of the item appropriately.

Ukraine is bolstering its attack on Russia’s energy – and it’s working

0

The dramatic rise in Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries has put Russian gas prices high despite the government banning gasoline to deal with crunch.

Ukraine is focusing on drone attacks on refineries, pumping stations and fuel trains to injure Russian war machines, but to disrupt everyday life in Russia. Summer has seen peak demand among Russian drivers and petrol farmers.

According to CNN tally of the attack, Ukrainian drones have attacked at least 10 major Russian energy facilities this month alone.

And it seems the strategy is working. According to Ukraine’s intelligence agency, refineries described more than 44 million tonnes of products each year. This is more than 10% of Russia’s capabilities.

Among the targets is the giant Lukoil refinery in Volgograd, the largest in southern Russia. CNN planted a cloud of swirling smoke from plants attacked early on August 14th. The Russian Ministry of Defense admitted damage to the plants that were attacked again on August 19th.

A large refinery in Saratov, also in southern Russia, was attacked earlier this month. According to Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukrainian unmanned systems, the fire continued to burn on Saturday at another refinery in the Rostov region (Rostov region).

Gasoline shortages have been reported in Crimea, annexed with several Russian regions. Russia-appointed governor Sergei Akshonov said the gasoline shortage was attributed to “logistics issues” and that the government will “take all measures to buy the necessary amount of fuel and stabilize prices.”

Activist with a Crimean pro-Ukrainian group – Yellow Ribbon said on Telegram that the most popular Galedo-grade gasoline has disappeared.

Despite government subsidies, Russian consumers are paying more at the pump. The price of wholesale gasoline on the St. Petersburg Exchange has increased by nearly 10% this month alone, and has increased by about 50% since the start of the year.

Satellite images of an oil pump station, part of the Dolzva pipeline, according to the Ukrainian military in the Tambov region of Russia on August 19, 2025.

Much of that increase has been passed down to consumers, with Russia’s Far East being particularly affected. Analysts expected that despite the Russian government banning gasoline exports in late July, they would not expect relief for at least a month.

“Unfortunately, our forecasts are unfavourable for now. We will have to wait at least another month for prices to drop,” NEFT Research’s managing partner Sergey Frolov told the Russian newspaper Kommersant. Kommersant said the price surge this month was “due to an accident at an oil refinery.”

The military is primarily aimed at diesel and its supply is not much affected, so the military is not much affected.

Ukrainian military and intelligence communications agencies have developed long-range warfare using drones, missiles and sabotages, even if very different conflicts were deployed on the ground. The military claimed this month that this year’s long-range attacks caused $74 billion in damage, causing nearly 40% of strikes of at least 500 kilometers or more within Russia.

While it is impossible to test such claims, there is a lot of visual evidence of the damage caused to refineries, storage tanks and pump stations over the past few months. Repairing such infrastructure is complicated by European and US sanctions.

In a report on Thursday, Ukraine’s foreign intelligence agency said Russian companies were urgently purchasing oil from Belarus to address the domestic shortage. Belarus’ state-owned oil refiner Bernevtekhim said last week that “interest in Belarus’ petroleum products in the Russian market has skyrocketed.”

Ukraine is also trying to block Russia’s oil exports. Last week, the drone struck the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia.

Both complained to the EU, saying, “Through these attacks, Ukraine is not primarily hurting Russia, but Hungary and Slovakia.”

US President Donald Trump also stepped in, and in a handwritten note to Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban, he said he was “very angry” about the confusion.

But for Ukraine, pressure is put on the forefront, so the attack on Russia’s key energy industry is a way to counter the Moscow story that its victory is ultimately inevitable.

Ukraine is trying to add it to its long-range weapons weapons, and last week unveiled a domestically produced cruise missile called Flamingos. The manufacturer aims to produce 200 a month.

Missile expert Fabian Hoffman said that if, for example, the fatal radius of a flamingo is above 38 meters, it would cause great damage in the case of soft targets such as distillation columns in Russian refineries.

Workers will inspect the flamingo cruise missile at Fire Point's Secret Factory in Ukraine on August 18, 2025.

“Each missile successfully targeted causes much more damage (more than existing Ukrainian weapons) with a 1,150-kilogram warhead,” says Mick Ryan, author of blog Futura Doctrina.

“I wouldn’t call it a silver bullet, but it would have a major impact on Ukraine’s ability to hurt Russia,” particularly because it’s difficult to protect all oil refineries.

In the meantime, analysts don’t expect thousands of Russian gas stations to dry out, but they believe the disruption will already exacerbate high inflation, which could mean an extension of the ban on gasoline exports into the fall as the Kremlin tries to keep prices down and secure supply.

Why Menendez Brothers were denied parole

0

The latest news may not be the end of the Menendez brothers’ bid for freedom. Here are the options they still have.

play

Brothers Menendez’s hopes for freedom through the prison parole process were shattered when the committee cited them as unfit to be reunited with society and breaking long-standing rules behind the bar.

Eric Menendez, 54, and Lyle Menendez, 57, were questioned for several hours and hours during the two-day hearings on August 21 and 22, about their parents’ shotgun murder in 1989, their behavior and how they changed since entering prison while serving in prison for more than 30 years.

Despite recent momentum resenting the May Freedom bid and allowing groundwell, a public supporter for parole consideration and release, the brothers were denied parole for a minimum of three years.

“You were a model prisoner in many ways, but you demonstrate the possibility of change. But despite all those outward positivity, we still know… you still struggle with antisocial personality traits like deception, minimization, and rule breaking that are beneath that positive surface.”

This is the meaning of the news for the bid for the brothers’ freedom and why the authorities released them parole.

Eric’s prison violation hearing focus: smuggling, physical violence, taxation

Eric Menendez was the first brother to go before the parole board, and during a nearly ten-hour hearing, he explained his way of thinking during his murder and prison. California’s parole hearing chair Robert Burton denied, saying Eric Menendez’s history of rule-destruction was broad and raised concerns about how he would act if released.

“Contrary to the beliefs of your supporters, you weren’t a model prisoner, and frankly, we get in the way a little,” Burton said.

At the hearing, Eric Menendez also allowed him to participate in the tax system with prison gangs. He described much of his actions as belonging to a man with no hope of release, trying to survive. The brother’s original sentence was a life without the possibility of parole.

“I was incredibly terrified,” Eric Menendez said at the hearing that he was being approached by gangs to help with tax fraud. “I thought this was a great opportunity to align myself with them and survive.”

“It was a very violent garden that I was trying to survive,” he said.

The commissioner also said Eric Menendez’s use of contraband cell phones was a factor in the denial. Eric Menendez said using phones to connect with the outside world is not intended to cause harm. Before he went out for parole, he said he didn’t consider the consequences of getting caught up in the phone.

Both brothers have experienced educational and rehabilitation programs over the past decades.

Lyle also denied parole for the violation.

Lyle Menendez’s prison records include historians of mentoring, community service activities and the pursuit of a master’s degree. However, at the hearing on August 22, the commissioner said he still has the “anti-social” traits that put him on the public risk if released.

His hearing also included time focusing on unauthorized use of mobile phones. Lyle Menendez said he had stayed to stay in touch with his family.

“I never call myself a model and someone who was imprisoned. I say I’m a good person and I’ve spent time helping people. I’m very open and accepting.”

Garland said that prisoners who break rules in prisons are more likely to break social rules, indicating that the murder factor was that he “has a bad perception of threats.” She said the board discovered that his regret was “real.”

Will Menendez’s brother still be free?

The denial of parole was a blow to the legal battle of a fierce battle for freedom from prison. The siblings are eligible for parole after a while. On the other hand, freedom still has two other means.

The Menendez brothers’ lawyers filed a habeas-protection petition on their behalf. The petition is slowly proceeding through legal proceedings and is opposed by Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

Another path to freedom is for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to grant his brothers generosity. That seems unlikely that the parole committee has determined they are a threat to society, trial lawyer Neema Ramani said in an email that he is a former federal prosecutor and president of West Coast Trial Attorney.

“I can’t see him sticking his neck out and forgive Menendez’s brother or pass sentences to the parole board’s denial,” Ramani said.

Families respond to denial of parole

The family, who had great support for the brothers and said they had forgiven them for the murder at the hearing, balked at their denial and opposed the media’s attention regarding the lawsuit.

“Of course, we are also disappointed in today’s decision, but we are not disappointed,” the family said in a statement spokesman Laziza Lambert shared with USA Today. “This is not the end of the road.”

“We know they are good men who work to rehab and regret. We love them unconditionally and will continue to stand by their side on future journeys.”

5 Takeout from Ghislaine Maxwell transcripts and audio files

0

Ghislaine Maxwell questioned whether Jeffrey Epstein died of suicide, but abandoned the conspiracy theory, suggesting that she was threatening a powerful man who joined the sex trafficking ring.

play

Last month, a Department of Justice interview with the Department of Justice convicted sex offender and Jeffrey Epstein associate Gislaine Maxwell revealed that there were no bombs in the newly released transcripts and audio files.

Hundreds of pages of edited transcripts and a handful of audio clips released on August 22 showed Maxwell questioning the prosecutor’s findings that investors committed suicide in prison in 2019. However, Maxwell abandoned a conspiracy theory that suggested someone outside the prison killed him, saying he never saw a man acting inappropriately with a woman on Epstein’s orbit.

“I’ve never seen a man doing anything inappropriate with women of all ages,” Maxwell told Associate Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump’s former lawyer, who personally handled the interview.

The independent transcripts probably won’t satisfy those who claim that Epstein maintains a strong list of clients who have joined the sex trafficking ring. The Trump administration faces anger from members of Trump’s own base as several people in his inner circle refused to release the file with Jeffrey Epstein after fanning the flames of Epstein-related conspiracy theories over the years.

Maxwell is currently sentenced to 20 years in prison for trafficking minors for Epstein and other sex offences. Shortly after an interview in late July, she was transferred to a minimal security prison camp in Coosia, Texas.

Here are five takeaways from the newly released transcript:

Maxwell praises Donald Trump.

Maxwell seemed out of the way to praise President Donald Trump, who was friends with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s. Maxwell’s defense attorney David Oscar Marx said he hopes Trump will use his power “in rights and fair ways.”

Trump pointed out power during a reporter’s question about Maxwell in Scotland on July 28, adding that it was “inappropriate” to discuss it.

When asked about Trump’s relationship with Epstein, Maxwell said that Trump was always kind and sincere with her.

“And I just want to say I found it, I admire his extraordinary achievements as I am now president,” she said. “And I like him, and I’ve always liked him.”

Maxwell specifically said he never saw Trump get a massage. Epstein has been accused of inviting a minor girl to have sex by arranging for a massage that will make her sexual. In 2008 he was convicted of Florida prostitution involving minors.

“I have never witnessed the President in any way in an inappropriate environment. He was not inappropriate for anyone,” she said. “In the days I was with him, he was a gentleman in every way.”

Maxwell says he’s never seen Bill Clinton behave inappropriately

Maxwell characterized President Bill Clinton, who traveled by Epstein’s plane, as she was nearby, not Epstein.

“President Clinton was my friend, not Epstein’s friend,” she said.

Clinton has traveled about 26 times on an Epstein plane, she said, but she characterized it as a “one journey” and said she knows Clinton hasn’t received a massage.

“That would have been the only time President Clinton thought he had a massage,” she said. “And because I was there he didn’t.”

Maxwell questions whether Epstein died from suicide

In a two-page July memo declaring that they would not release the file on Epstein, the FBI said it concluded that Epstein had died of suicide in a solitary cell in a Manhattan prison in August 2019.

“I don’t think he died of suicide,” she said.

However, Maxwell also challenged a conspiracy theory that suggested someone outside the prison killed Epstein to silence him.

“Of course it’s possible,” Maxwell said. “But I don’t know why. And I don’t believe in either the scary mail or this. I don’t think Epstein was a hit like that.”

She added that she thought the idea was “silly” because Epstein was a “very easy target” before he was imprisoned in 2019. If Epstein is murdered, she believes it is an “internal situation” involving someone else in prison.

Maxwell says he can’t explain the massive remittance from Epstein

Blanche asked Maxwell about bank records showing that Epstein sent around $30 million in money over the years to Epstein. The relocation included approximately $18.3 million in 1999, $5 million in 2002 and $7.4 million in 2007.

By 2005, Epstein was investigating sexual offences involving minors.

Maxwell denied that Epstein was paying her to recruit minor girls to be sexually abused, as prosecutors proposed at her trial. She said it could have been sent to an account managed by an Epstein accountant, or it could have been a loan from Epstein for her business venture.

“He never paid me… for any reason,” Maxwell said. “I don’t think this money belongs to mine.”

Maxwell maintains innocence despite his beliefs

Maxwell maintained her innocence throughout the two days of interviews despite being convicted in 2021 for seducing and transporting minors for illegal sexual activity and conspiring to seduce and transport them for sex trafficking to Epstein. Maxwell is currently pending appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court.

She said she never intentionally recruited anyone’s minors to do a massage for Epstein and never witnessed sexual abuse.

“I never saw a masseuse look unhappy or look at me not coming back,” she said.

The dead end, which appears to be new accountability, is unlikely to satisfy victims who have already been upset by the Justice Department’s decision to move Maxwell to a low-security prison after speaking with Blanche.

“President Trump sent a clear message today: Pedophiles deserve priority treatment and victims are not important,” the surviving brother of Epstein’s victim Virginia Giuffre, who died of suicide in April, said in a statement along with victims Annie Farmer and sister Maria Farmer.

After the release of the transcript, Maxwell’s defense attorney David Oscar Marx said in a statement on X that his client was “innocent” and that he did not participate in sexual abuse against anyone.

Benson Boone American Heart Tour is the perfect 10

st. Paul, Minnesota – Of course, it started with a flip.

and Pyro. And a dry ice blanket. And the enthusiastic lights.

In the center is Benson Boone, surrounded by a fitted white outfit outlined in red and blue, pointing to it as if to mean it, delving into the energy of “I want to be what you call it.”

Boone baptized the American Heart Tour with a 22-song setlist at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is ready to prove his pop bona is a patented acrobatic.

The Friday night’s sold-out concert was the beginning of a 33-day North American run (Boone’s first full arena tour) landing in major cities such as Born, New York, Miami, Denver, Las Vegas and Seattle.

Boone has only released two full-length albums, the 2024 “Fireworks & Roller Blade” and the current “American Heart,” but Boone has come out of Pecific Northwest.

Yes, this unconventional 23-year-old has magnetism about turning your mind and yourself with charm and swagger.

He is confident and can command the runway during the Grabby Chorus of “Be Someant” and greatly appreciate the crowd towards the end of his almost two-hour show, before a robust singer of his groundbreaking smash “Beautiful Things.”

Boone’s retro look – The “70s” stout, the most classed outfit as the gas-astenant chic almost monobrow, has also spread to his music.

The slow Skyride on the blue chandelier, shaking uncomfortably high during “mysterious magic,” was as visually squeal as the opportunity to watch the bright tune to nod to vintage pop.

During “Mr. Electric Blue,” the homage to his father and the most robust song on his new album, Boone laughed, played air guitar and skipped the ramp tilted to his mirrored piano. His hands weren’t that big, but his attitude and flashy Abbaring outfit made young Elton John smack out the melody.

Boone also gets some vocal cues from Queen Freddie Mercury, smearing his multi-octave voice onto the heart-waving “Man Man” and the soft piano ballad “Star of the Stars,” singing on the blue piano at the bottom of the catwalk that stretches the length of the arena floor.

“At some point in your life, this song means something to you,” Boone told the crowd, sounding like a school counselor as he spoke about his loss (the song was written for his late grandmother).

The bold stage design of Boone’s show allows for maximum athleticism, with red lacquered stairs lined up on the sides of the circular stage, and the hydraulic platform provides a firing pad with frequent aerial attitudes that must make his insurance company cry.

There is no Boone’s innate showmanship. Not only does a heart of red, white and blue paper fall from the ceiling, it also leans against the crowd and claps its hands, embracing the spotlight between the “young American hearts” every time they lean against the crowd and embrace the waves from the fans and the waves.

However, his ballad-heavy trends, including clearly intentional “Mom’s Song” and slow burners “I’m Intoxicated with My Heart” and “My Love” follow a similar rhythm that can disrupt the pace despite emotional openness.

When Boone and his four-piece band rock “There she goes” or lying down the catwalk towards “Sugar Sweet”, the dynamism dials to 11, and his potential as a long distance is clear.

Boone may not be musically revolutionary, but he is a solid representative of Heartfelt Pop. I hope he continues to land.

Trump administrator. I want to send Kilmer Abrego Garcia to Uganda: Filing

The Trump administration plans to send Kilmer Abrego Garcia to Uganda after being released from detention in a months-long battle to take him out of the country on August 22, court filings stated.

On Friday, the magistrate judge returned to Maryland to Abrego Garcia, 30, who was released from the Tennessee prison. He and his family live while facing smuggling charges. Workers at Salvadoran National, Sheetmetal were in custody for several months after the administration accidentally deported him to MegaPrison in El Salvador.

However, as it was revealed that he was being released, an application posted on Saturday showed that the administration was trying to send him to another country. USA Today reached out to the Homeland Security and Immigration Customs Enforcement for comment.

According to a letter from Costa Rica’s safe minister, Mario Zamora Coldero to the US Embassy on Thursday, the day before his release, Costa Rica officials offered to take Abrego Garcia as a refugee or resident after his criminal penalty after the criminal penalty.

Abrego Garcia’s lawyer Sean Hecker said the administration had tried to offer Costa Rica to remove him in exchange for pleading guilty to two smuggling charges. In a filing in U.S. District Court in Tennessee, Hecker wrote that it was revealed that Abrego Garcia will be released at the end of the week, and the government in exchange for his guilty “a final ditch effort to prevent its release” remained in prison until Monday.

Abrego Garcia refused to stay in prison and was released Friday.

After his release, ICE attorney Charles Wall wrote in an email Friday that he must report to Abrego Garcia’s attorney to ICE’s executive office in Baltimore on Monday. A minute later, at 4:01pm, Wall said Homeland Security authorities may have taken Abrego Garcia to Uganda within 72 hours of that.

Hecker said the case should be dismissed and that Abrego Garcia is being forced to accept his guilty plea by the prospect of being detained indefinitely in the middle of a world where his safety and freedom are threatened. The 2023 State Department report warned of key human rights issues in inland East African countries, including “the harsh and life-threatening prison situation.”

“It’s hard to imagine the path the government could have taken if it was more emphasised on its vindictiveness,” he said.

Since he was detained in March, Abrego Garcia has found himself at the heart of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. This included removing hundreds of other immigrants accused of him and gang bonds at the terrorism confinement center in El Salvador.

The Trump administration said it could not return him despite accidentally deporting him, but ended up returning him under court pressure and facing smuggling charges resulting from a traffic stop in 2022.

A federal judge in Tennessee found he was eligible for release when he fought his case. His lawyers were deported quickly, fearing that he would soon be placed in ice custody. The judges allowed him to postpone his release.

A federal judge in Maryland made sure he wasn’t immediately arrested by the Tennessee ice. It gave him some reprieve with 72 hours notice before a plan to deport him.

Hurricane predictors hope that Fernando will form. I’ll track that path

Hurricane predictors are turning their attention from Erin to other developing tropical systems in the Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center invests in the AL90, and because “investment” shortens “investment” to “study”, it could potentially invest the AL90, track investments and develop into something stronger in the Atlantic. The most likely option is to invest in AL90. This is expected to intensify tropical storms as it develops into tropical depression on Sunday, August 24th and moves north. The NHC will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 8am (

Also being tracked: There are four more tropical waves in the Caribbean, east of Investment AL99. This is a tropical wave located about 850 miles east of the Windward Islands.

Potential tropical storms can affect Bermuda

According to the NHC, forecasters have warned them to monitor the progress of investment AL90 related to showers and thunderstorms. The system could be nearly 100% formed in the next 48 hours, according to the NHC.

The storm can follow a similar path to Hurricane Erin’s path, but Accuweather says that Bermuda can approach or collide directly as a hurricane. “The storm is expected to produce several inches of rain, gusts of winds of 60-80 mph, rough seas and several feet of rainy skies,” said Alex Dasilva, a lead hurricane expert at Accuweather.

When the system develops into a tropical storm, it is named Fernando. The Air Force reconnaissance planes will investigate the system Saturday afternoon, according to the NHC.

Another obstruction consisting of a confused shower and thunderstorm, Invest AL99 is located 850 miles east of the Upwind Islands. The NHC said local heavy rains and gusts of wind are expected to be brought to parts of the island on parts of the island, including Grenada and St. Lucia, but forecasters say it has brought the potential for development to 20%.

Hurricane Season Storm Tracker

Hurricane Center Tracking Four Tropical Waves in the Atlantic Ocean

In addition to investing in the AL90 and AL99, the National Hurricane Center tracks four tropical waves in the Atlantic.

  • Tropical waves of the Atlantic Ocean in the Far East migrate across the westward Cabo Verde Islands.
  • Tropical waves in the Central Atlantic Ocean near Invest AL99 are moving westward.
  • Tropical waves in the Eastern Caribbean from western Puerto Rico to western Venezuela are expected to bring about widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms from near the US Virgin Islands to Mona Passage south of Puerto Rico.
  • Tropical waves of the Western Caribbean near the Bay of Honduras lead through Honduras to the East Pacific Ocean, leading to eastern Nicaragua.

Each of the tropical waves is moving westward and poses no threat at this time. But experts say they are preparing for hurricane season.

Tropical waves in the Pacific Ocean, which are generating confused showers and thunderstorms, hundreds of miles south of the southwestern Mexico coast, are expected to become tropical depression early next week. Forecasters provide the system. The system is moving towards West Northwester, with a 40% chance of formation over the next two days and a 70% chance of formation over the next seven days.

What are tropical waves?

According to Accuweather.com, the term “tropical wave” describes atmospheric conditions.

Tropical waves are elongated regions, or troughs, with relatively low pressures, that move east across the tropical and west from Africa to the Atlantic.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, waves can lead to the formation of tropical cyclones, which can lead to the formation of tropical cyclones.

  • Create a family communication plan: NOAA said he took the time to write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family.

Irish folk band Mary Wallopards said she was muted at the festival after showing her Palestinian flag on stage.

Irish folk band The Mary Wloropers say they were muted at a music festival held in Portsmouth, England on Friday after displaying the Palestinian flag during their set.

“We were cut off at the Victory Festival with the Palestinian flag on stage,” the band said in an Instagram post. “We’ve been doing this for six years and this has never happened before.”

“Free Palestine every day.”

The festival organizers denied the band’s account and said event management cut out the sound, saying the band “used a chant that is widely understood to have a discriminatory context.”

“The flag was displayed at the stage contrary to our policy, and this was raised with the artist’s crew, but at this point the show did not end. “The decision by event managers to cut the sound and end the performance was only taken after the band used a chant that is widely understood to have a discriminatory context.”

CNN approached the band and festival for more details.

Video edited from a concert posted by the band on Instagram shows Mary Wollopers banjo player Andrew Hendy started the set by saying “Free Palestine and f**k Israel.”

According to the video, their performance lasts about a further minute. A stage hand comes on stage and appears to be removing the Palestinian flag that the band has stuck on one of the speakers.

Andrew Hendy tells the crowd that the band is instructed not to fly the Palestinian flag or that they will be cut out and encouraged the audience to leave the festival venue. Banjo players began chanting “Free Palestine” before the microphone was cut off.

The video then shows the band’s guitarist Charles Hendy asking people if the band is allowed to continue playing. The response is palpable, but the person appears to have responded that the Palestinian flag should be removed.

“We’re not playing,” replies Charles Hendy.

“Fine,” says offscreen.

As the band waving to the crowd, leaving the stage, the audience began chanting “Free Palestine” and “Let Play!”

“People were upset and angry,” said Emma Gaynor, an audience member who attended a concert with her partner. “I hadn’t heard anything discriminatory. It all happened very quickly.”

Another attendee, Jess Haksam, said that the other bands who performed the festival that day also said “Free Palestine” during the set.

“From everything I’ve heard,” Haksam emailed. “(Mary Wolopards) said “Free Palestine” that other bands on the main stage had said before the set. ”

The incident occurs amid the intense debate over pro-Palestinian activities and freedom of speech in the UK, where musicians are often at the forefront.

British police have launched a criminal investigation after rap duo Bob Billan chanted “Death to IDF” at the Glastonbury Festival set in June. Even the US government has revoked their band members’ visas prior to their US tour.

A New York bus crash kills 5 and injures dozens. What we know

Five people were killed and multiple people injured when a tour bus crashed on an interstate in upstate New York on August 22, authorities said they are releasing new information.

Fifty-four people, including a driver on a tour bus travelling from Niagara Falls in New York to New York City, crashed, capsized, rolled over the levee of Interstate 90 between Rochester and Buffalo, locking passengers away. New York State Police responded to the scene on August 22 at about 12:22pm, according to a news release.

Hospital officials said dozens were taken to local hospitals, including many children.

“I’ve been here for 25 years… This is probably the most traumatic patient we’ve had since the incident in one of my career here in Buffalo,” Dr. Samuel Cloud, chief medical officer at Erie County Medical Center, said at a press conference.

Here’s what we know:

What causes the bus crash?

Police said the cause of the crash was still under investigation. The bus, owned by the company M&Y Tour Inc, traveled east on the interstate. It left the road to median and was then “suddenly” corrected, capsized and rolled down the road sideways, state police said. Authorities say the bus was the only vehicle involved.

“It is believed that the operator was distracted, lost control, overcorrected, and then turned to his right shoulder,” New York State Police Major T. Andre Ray said at a press conference.

Both mechanical bus failures and driver impairment were ruled out as causes, state police said.

Bus residents range from 1 to 74 years old and live from multiple countries, including the US, China, India, the Philippines and the Middle East. None of the deceased is a child.

The crash temporarily closed the lanes in both directions on the interstate.

Who was the victim of the crash?

Authorities have not announced the identity of the deceased or injured person. It is not clear exactly how many people were injured. The five injured people were transported by helicopters, authorities said.

Kaleida Health, which operates several hospitals in the Buffalo area, provided an update on conditions of injuries sustained at the facility. Buffalo General Medical Center has five adults. One person is in good condition and the other has already been discharged from the hospital. The Millard Fillmore suburban hospital welcomed 11 adults and two children. Ten people are in good condition and three are in fair condition. Oishei Children’s Hospital had three children. Two children are in good condition and one child is in serious condition.

Six people were also receiving treatment at the University of Rochester Medical Center, URMC said in a statement on August 22. Three were transported by Mercy Flights, and three were transported by ambulance. Two patients are being treated for serious injuries, and four are medically stable, including children.

Officials at Erie County Medical Center said they are treating 24 patients.

Dutch Foreign Minister Casper Beldkamp resigns due to Israeli sanctions

Amsterdam

–

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned on Friday evening after failing to secure new sanctions against Israel in the war in Gaza.

Verdkamp intended to introduce new measures in response to planned Israeli attacks in Gaza city and other densely populated areas, but was unable to secure the support of his coalition partners.

The 61-year-old former Israeli ambassador told reporters that he “cannot implement his own policies and chart the courses he thinks are necessary.”

Following Veldkamp’s resignation, the remaining cabinet members of his central right new Social Contract Party also left, causing chaos to the Dutch government.

“In short, that’s it,” said party leader Eddie Van Heejum, calling the Israeli government’s actions “a complete opposition to international treaties.”

The Dutch government had already collapsed in June when anti-Muslim MP Geert Wilders separated from the country’s four-person coalition over the migrant fight.

The remaining three parties remained in the caregiver government until the election was held in October.

Palestinians will meet on August 13th to receive their prepared meals from Gaza City's food distribution centre.

The world’s leading authority on the food crisis said on Friday that the largest city in the Gaza Strip is being held by hunger and likely to spread across the territory without ending ceasefire and humanitarian restrictions.

The Dutch Parliament has repeatedly delayed discussions on sanctions against Israel. This is a discussion that has already been postponed from Thursday as the cabinet meeting took over on Friday afternoon.

“Hungerness, ethnic cleansing and genocide are underway,” Green’s left/Labor Party’s Kati Piri, who merged, told Congress.

In response to the planned military escalation, Woldkamp had proposed a ban on imports from Israeli settlements of occupied Palestinian territory.

Opposition politicians were unhappy with what was seen as a lack of action against Israel, calling for a lack of confidence in the minister.
