Should taxpayer money protect private schools from shootings?

0

“Our schools are under attack,” a supporter of Minnesota Catholic Schools wrote in an open letter in April 2023.

play

A few years before the shooting in Minneapolis on August 27, the city’s religious and education leaders requested additional state funds to keep campuses safe.

They never got it. Complex reasons: One is that the state legislature never passed a bill that should have been funded (the public schools also didn’t get the money). Lawmakers reintroduced the law this year, but it is still pending.

This situation highlights another dynamic in American schools. The idea of investing public funds in private schools, particularly religious schools, is often controversial. In the meantime, no school is public or private, or appears to have no complete risk of shooting. That fact has encouraged leaders at some private schools to promote security resources on par with their counterparts in public schools.

“Funding and grant programs should be structured to ensure equitable access to all public and non-country schools, including faith-based schools,” said Stephen Cheeseman, president of the National Catholic Education Association.

Following the massive shooting at a religious school in Nashville on April 14, 2023, supporters of Minnesota Catholic schools said they could use more help to keep campuses safe.

“Our schools are under attack,” they wrote in a public letter. “In Minnesota, private schools, especially Jewish and Muslim schools, are experiencing an increasing level of threat, and everything must be taken very seriously.”

They urged Democratic Gov. Tim Waltz to help lobby the state legislature to include them in the newly proposed school safety program. In a statement to USA Today, Walz’s Office said private schools in Minnesota have already received state funding. He is also qualified for the school’s safety centre resource, including training.

“The governor was deeply concerned about student safety and has signed millions of laws to raise funds for school safety,” spokesman Claire Lancaster said. “We are committed to working with people who are willing to work with us to stop gun violence and keep students safe.”

Taylor Swift and the first night after Travis Kelce engagement

0

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelse are renewing their engagement and spending their first public date night at Arrowhead Stadium.

Swift wore a sweater vest and a mini denim skirt paired with knee-high white boots. A social media clip posted to X saw Swift flashing his engagement ring while drinking from the cup.

“The rings glitter,” a social media user wrote. Another user wrote, “You can see how shiny the ring is even in this blurry video.”

The Kansas City chiefs will not take the field in Sao Paulo, Brazil until September 5th, but the newly engaged couple will absorb college football and Cincinnati, Kelse’s alma mater, will open a season with Nebraska. Neutral site matchup puts Arrowhead in the national spotlight.

The couple’s appearance comes just a few days after sharing photos of Kelse’s garden proposals. “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are married,” the Instagram caption read.

How much does Taylor Swift have an engagement ring?

Kindred Lubeck is a jewelry designer and the rings are gorgeous cut diamonds from an old mine. According to British jeweler Hancox, the style of the diamond is known for its square or rectangular stone pairing on the corners and sides.

“It’s a traditional thing with modern talent. The stone in the center looks like a long mining cushion cut of 7 to 9 ct bezel set, set in 18k yellow gold.” “The cut and clarity are very visible in the photos, so my estimate is that this ring costs around 250-500k.”

However, experts in other industries have made the ring even more valuable.

“If diamonds are of natural and extraordinary quality, they probably have a good range in the D to F color range, and they could be worth £500,000 to £750,000 ($675,000 to $1 million), jeweller Laura Taylor, who specializes in engagement and wedding rings at Lorel Diamonds, said in a statement in an email to USA today.

Her comments show the ongoing bustling division over the recent popularity of nature and laboratory-grown diamonds.

Travis Kelce’s father cooks at the suggestion of his son Travis, Taylor Swift

The tight end’s father, Edquelse, revealed that Travis popped the question on August 10th, shortly after taping his brother’s “New Heights” podcast. “You can do that on the side of the road and have a place that makes it a special event,” Ed told ABC affiliate in Cleveland, recalling the advice he and Scott Swift provided to Travis.

For Swift and Kelce, the stadium has become a date night tradition.

The two were spotted in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final, held in New York at the US Open last year, and were cozy in the MLB playoff game in October 2024.

Their return to Arrowhead feels like a perfect circle moment, celebrating their involvement in the city where their romance first became headline news.

What is de minimis?

0

Good morning and happy Friday! This is Betty Lin-Fisher in the consumer-centric Daily Money edition on Friday.

The major trade loopholes are now over today, which may mean high prices for low-cost goods from other countries.

You may have heard of the “De Minimis Trade Agreement.” This was an exemption of under $800, which was applied to items shipped to the US. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in late July, effectively ending the rules and fully ending the tax-free program.

Today’s deadline is months after the loophole was closed on May 2nd, especially due to imports from China and Hong Kong.

Consumers are enduring prices rise, with 30 countries halting parcel services to the US

Will the Fed cut help the US economy?

Earlier this week, President Trump fired federal government governor Lisa Cook, paving the way for appointees to make up most of the federal government’s seven-man governors committee. The move is seen as the latest in the president’s efforts to restructure the central bank’s composition as central banks continue to push for aggressive interest rate cuts.

Cook is trying to remove her in court.

Trump says the Fed cuts will make the US solid economy even better. Is he right?

After filming, RFK Jr. says HHS will study psychotic drugs

0

Sen. D-Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith said Kennedy should be fired after suggesting that the antidepressants played a role in the August 27 shooting at a Catholic school.

play

  • “We need to explain why this violence is happening and we need to look at all possibilities,” Kennedy said.
  • A 2019 survey found that most school shooters didn’t appear to have been prescribed psychotropic drugs and had not discovered a “causal relationship.”
  • “I’m going to tell you that you go to announcement school and tell our sad community. In effect, guns don’t kill children, antidepressants do,” Smith wrote to Kennedy on social media.
  • Two children have been killed and 18 people were injured in the attack at the Announcement Catholic School in Minneapolis.

Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said his agency would study whether antidepressants and other psychotic drugs “may contribute to violence,” as a result of the Minneapolis School shooting, urging Minnesota senators to accus the Minnesota senator of “selling bulls.”

Kennedy said in an interview with Fox News that HHS is looking at a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and “some of other psychotic drugs.” The Health Secretary has long raised concerns about SSRIs and has linked them to school shootings.

A 2019 survey found that most school shooters did not appear to have been prescribed psychotropic drugs and that the predicted drug “no direct or causal relationships found.”

Sen. D-Minnesota, Sen. Tina Smith, said Kennedy was focusing on the wrong issues.

“I’m going to announce school and trying to tell our sad community. In effect, guns don’t kill children, antidepressants do,” Smith wrote on social media. “Just shut up. Stop selling bulls. You should be fired.”

Police say 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire at an Announcement Catholic School, killing two children and injuring 18 people. According to media reports, Westman has written in a journal about suffering from depression and having thoughts about suicide and murder. It is unknown if Westman is taking psychotics.

“We need to explain why this violence is happening and we need to look at all possible possibilities,” Kennedy said on Fox.

Democrats have raised concerns about access to guns in the wake of yet another shooting.

“There are 400 million guns in this country,” Smith wrote on social media. “More guns than people. In America, we are 10 times more likely to be shot in schools or playgrounds than any other developed country.”

“People have guns in this country forever,” Kennedy said at an August 28 press conference in Texas.

“Something changed and it dramatically changed human behavior. And one of the perpetrators we need to consider is whether the fact that we are the most overrecognised country in the world,” he added.

Some conservatives also focus on Westman’s gender identity.

According to media reports, Westman’s name was legally changed to Robin because the judge wrote, “identifies minor children as women.” Kennedy’s Fox News comments were prompted by questions about Westman’s male-to-female transition process.

“Everyone who uses this as an opportunity to exacerbate our trans community and other communities there has lost a common sense of humanity,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a press conference.

Kennedy has been a longtime vaccine skeptic, and his views on some of his health issues are considered fringes by mainstream experts. His tenure as the country’s finest health officer is tumultuous. He attempts to kick out the center of Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monares amidst a disagreement on policy, but she refuses to resign.

Just as less than a month has passed since the Senate confirmed her role, Monares’ contested expulsion urged the three other CDC staff to resign in protest of Kennedy’s leaders, including his instructions on the vaccine.

The $5.7 billion wealth promised to pass on half of the wealth. What about them?

0

play

Do you remember the pledge? It sounds almost quaint today, but in 2010, they promised to give at least half of their wealth to charities.

Bill and Melinda Gates, together with billionaire Warren Buffett, have launched a pledge as a way to encourage the ultra-wealthy people to divert some of their wealth into charity causes. Since 2010, the 57-person original-predger group has grown from 30 countries to over 250 donors.

The pledge gives hundreds of millions of dollars to valuable causes. However, the new report questions how sincere they are in fact separated more than half of their fate.

“Is it remembered as a catalyst or empty promise?” report titled the gift pledge at 3pm, released on July 30 by the Progressive Institute for Policy Research. The pledge gives marks that 15th Anniversary of August.

“We have a bold, direct pledge,” the report said. “There are pledges who need to pick up the pace, and there are pledges who long for personal benefits in their charity duties.”

Despite its best intentions, the report concludes that “the pledge is not fulfilled, not fulfilled, not a ticket to a fairer, better future.”

The pledge gave billions to charity

That doesn’t mean that the pledges given are not making a difference. Dozens of contractors are giving billions of dollars to charities. And that’s important. In one academic estimate, only about half of Americans give something to charity causes.

“For 15 years, the pledge has created a new norm of generosity and has grown into a connected and proactive global learning community,” the nonprofit said in a statement.

According to the report, there are some of the biggest charities here.

  • Bill Gates, $55 billion
  • Warren Buffett, $51 billion
  • Michael Bloomberg, $20 Billion
  • Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, $10 billion
  • Film director George Lucas and wife Melody Hobson, $4 billion

So, what is the problem?

Do billionaires giving their pledge live in their vows?

The report concludes that most pledges do not live up to the pledge for all their gifts. Among the survey results:

  • Of the 57 original pledges, 32 are still billionaires, with 283% becoming wealthy since being signed.
  • Of the 22 deceased pledges, only eight fulfilled the pledge, and death gave them more than half of the wealth.
  • Approximately 80% of the charitable contributions from the original contractor went to private foundations rather than directly to the charity.

Overall, the success of the pledge given is a “mixed bag,” said Chuck Collins, a senior scholar at the nonprofit and one of the authors of the report. “I think some people are stepping up and doing that, and some people are coast running with good intentions that come even though they signed the pledge.”

Collins said the spirit of the pledge is “to make money for the organizations where they work. That doesn’t seem to happen.”

Only those who signed the pledges gave billions to charities

Collins and his cow soldiers estimate that of the original pledge signatories, only the living pledge who gave more than half the wealth to the charity, gave hedge fund billionaire John Arnold and his wife Laura to the charity. They gave 62% of their current wealth, or about $5 billion.

Of the former living pledges, 18 have given charities at least 10% of their wealth to charities, with reports estimates that include Lucas, Bloomberg, Bill, (separately) Melinda French Gates, Buffett and Media’s Titan Ted Turner, along with some lesser-known billionaires.

Overall, the 32 living billionaires who signed pledges in 2010 give charity 18% of their wealth, on average, according to the report.

“I think it made a difference,” Collins said of the pledge. “I don’t think it’s making a difference.

Clearly, given the tone of the 33-page report, researchers at the Institute consider the pledge they give as a worthwhile effort. The Institute works to combat income inequality and build a more equitable society.

Giving a pledge leader praises the report that raises “an important question aimed at encouraging greater donations.”

However, they have been quized in research. They say the report is drawn from incomplete financial data and employs an inconsistent methodology.

“Unfortunately, the reliance on incomplete data in the report and the exclusion of important forms of charitable contributions, such as gifts to the foundation and other intermediaries, paints misleading pictures of the signatories of the pledge and the impact and intent of the pledge.

Does Private Foundation hold charitable funds in Limbo?

Perhaps the biggest point of competition is private foundations.

If a billionaire leads wealth to a private foundation, the report says money will not be a source of charity until the foundation releases it.

The report says four-fifths of the $206 billion given by the original pledge went to the private foundation. Some of them sit in billions of dollars of wealth.

“Well, when will it come out?” Collins said. “Are we going to create a foundation for a dynasty family? Will the money be parked on the bystanders for decades and by decades?”

The hero of the pledge given is Chuck Feeney, a tax-free shopping billionaire who gave almost all of his wealth before his death in 2023. The report believes he is one of the only former pledges who handed it all over before he died.

“For the sake of the pledge to fulfill their promises,” the report said.

More protests against Trump are planned nationwide

“More than billionaires” protests target billionaires who will help implement Trump’s policies

play

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to skip barbecues and spend Labor Day protesting President Donald Trump and the billionaires who support him.

“A lot of people are thrilled to see a lot of people really raise the heat of the administration and billionaires who are actually pushing the agenda, especially as we’re seeing an increase in attacks on the community.”

Over 1,000 “billionaires” events are planned nationwide on Labor Day and surrounding days.

The event, which takes place in cities large and small in almost every state, is designed to build on the momentum of other massive protests, including No Kings Day in June and Good Troubles in July. They are led by labor organisations, including the AFL-CIO, as well as other advocacy groups such as Mayday Strong, Public Citizens and Individuals.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment on the protests. Instead, he provided a quote from Vice President JD Vance about Democrats who have not voted for the GOP tax and expenditure bill, as well as an estimate from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Labor Day.

“We finally have a president who fights and delivers for American workers every day. President Trump believes that American workers are the heart and soul of our economy and national identity. That’s why he’s always defending the agenda that puts them first,” she said.

Batty, whose group focuses on racial and economic activity, said many Americans don’t see Trump’s actions that way.

The organizers said, “We are hoping for a show of great power that we are not sitting on Monday, working class people all over the country are fighting back and billionaires are ready to keep our community from smashing away,” Batty said.

Near the community

Many advocacy groups planning the Labor Day protest were also involved in the nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations on June 14th. This attracted millions of attendees at 2,100 locations for good trouble live shows at events at over 1,000 locations on July 17th, according to group estimates. Overall, since April, there have been monthly nationwide protests against the administration’s policies.

Events are expected to grow in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, but this time there will be no flagship events. This is because organizers want activists to focus on community needs.

Following the models that model advocacy groups have been using since the spring, they will host events in as many locations as possible, rather than one or two major cities. This approach can be ignored and made possible by the public, connecting with local resources, and those who appear to conduct local advocacy.

The president of National Education Association Becky Pringle said that teachers and school support staff unions are taking part because educators feel a responsibility to speak out. The administration hurt the child, she said, In particular, the passage of the GOP tax and expenditure bill will reduce Medicare and food profits.

“We understand that we must demonstrate corruption and rejection of lawlessness and predatory policies, as all the chaos and destruction is because we take money from our children and give tax credits to already wealthy people from providing health care,” Pringle said.

Each community must decide on specific policies to protest and how and how to protest, Pringle said. She will be attending an event in Iowa and will focus on the impact of cuts on food aid and what it means for working families.

“Educators and workers across the country understand what is happening, how our rights are diminished or taken away, how power is integrated. “To be honest, we’re in a moment when we don’t stand up and fight for democracy or have it.”

Regardless of what topics activists choose to focus on, organizers feel this should be a move led by working-class people.

“At this moment, the only way forward is to choose workers who are more than billionaires every day,” she said.

Dominguez said the moment stands out as it has long brought together labor and community groups for mass protests on Labor Day.

In New York City, thousands of New Yorkers are expected to gather in front of Trump Tower and turn Fifth Avenue into a “street restaurant.”

In Des Moines, labor groups will march from the Iowa State Capitol to Union Labor Park, ending with a massive chef. In Scottsdale, Arizona, organizers are planning a complete dy-in with gravestones and cos, according to the event’s description, “billionaires and politicians are killing our community through corporate greed, school privatization and attacks on workers.”

Organizers in Madison, Wisconsin are holding Labor Festival 2025 on the Madison Labour Temple site. There are live music, food trucks, children’s events and collection drives for students from homeless families.

In Denver, activists hold rallies at the state capitol, demanding that ice move away from schools and communities.

Arkansas activists gather for a rally at Hot Springs National Park and a march in Little Rock. In Post Falls, the North Idaho Central Labor Council and Spokane Regional Labor County are hosting car shows and Labor Day picnics.

Protests targeting certain billionaires

Some of the protests and rallies target certain business officials “which really help drive an authoritarian agenda,” Batty said.

These include those and businesses who donated to Trump’s Political Action Committee, those who worked for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or those who benefited financially from the moves they made by the Trump administration.

“We know that many of these people who actually help promote the agenda are not used to being in fact the subject of major protest,” he said.

Bhatti speaks at a Chicago event targeting Antonio Gracias, a senior Doge volunteer involved in immigration and social security policy who left the government in July. Randy Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, had recently questioned nine public pension funds that he also controlled whether his Doge was harming investments.

Other goals include AI platform Palantir Technologies Inc., Bhatti said. It received millions of dollars in government contracts to integrate government data on Americans and its co-founder billionaire Peter Thiel. Target changed Day’s policies when Trump took office. Airbnb co-founders Joe Gebbia and GOP Mega-Donor Jeff Yass.

In New York’s East Hampton, where summer homes for hundreds of millions of dollars are homes, organizers plan a “house tour” march past their homes. Organizers of the East Hampton event have called it “a direct conflict with the Olihead power center” in a news release.

Dominguez said people who are directly connected to Trump are not the only targets of protest. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, activists are protesting local developers who received a multi-million dollar tax credit to build hotels and expensive homes, Dominguez said.

Training for the future

Organizers also want to use the protests to continue training a new generation of activists, turning their eyes to the next three years and more of Trump’s term.

“We know we are in a history era where many massive protests across the country are taking place in order to really bring back the tide of authoritarianism,” Batty said. “We know it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and people need to build muscle.”

Pringle said activists are extremely intentional about building movements at all levels.

“We are against the truly wealthy people, billionaires who are exercising their power, influence and control in this government in a way that we have not witnessed at this level or at this rate,” Pringle said. “An organized people always win over organized money, but we have to organize. We have to be intentional, we have to understand our strength.”

Rwanda received immigrants deported from the US this month

0

WASHINGTON/NAIROBI, Aug. 28 (Reuters) – Rwanda received seven immigrants deported from the US earlier this month, a government spokesman said in a statement Thursday weeks after the two countries reached an agreement on relocating up to 250 people.

“The first group of seven vetted immigrants arrived in Rwanda in mid-August,” Rwandan government spokesman Yolande Makoro said in a statement.

“Three individuals have expressed their desire to return to their home countries, while four want to stay in Rwanda and build their lives. All of these individuals will receive appropriate support and protection from the Rwandan government, regardless of their specific needs.”

President Donald Trump has taken a hard-line approach to immigration, aiming to illegally expel millions of US immigrants and to step up removals into third countries.

A US State Department spokesman on Thursday introduced the Rwandan government to questions about deportation earlier this month, and declined to comment on details of diplomatic communications with other governments.

“Implementing the Trump administration’s immigration policy is a top priority for the State Department. As Secretary Rubio said, we remain unshakable in our commitment to end illegal and mass migration and strengthening US border security,” the spokesman said.

The US Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In early August, Rwanda and the US signed an agreement for Rwanda to take over up to 250 immigrants, and Washington sent Rwanda the first list to review the first list of 10.

Rwanda has recently established itself as a destination for immigration that the West wants to exclude, despite concerns from rights groups that Kigali doesn’t respect basic human rights.

The Trump administration says deportation from third countries will help quickly eliminate immigrants, including those who have been criminally convicted. Migrant hardlines are looking at the removal of third countries as a way to deal with criminals who cannot be deported easily and can pose a threat to the public.

Opponents have criticized deportation as dangerous and cruel. Because people can face violence, they can be sent to countries that have no bonds and do not speak language.

Earlier this month, Makoro said under an agreement with Washington, migrants deported to Rwanda will be provided with workforce training, health care and accommodation.

On Thursday, Makoro said that people deported to Rwanda were accompanied by international organisations and visited by international migrants and Rwandan social services.

Google Cloud reveals how AI is restructuring cybersecurity defenses

0

In Google’s sophisticated Singapore office at level 3 block 80, Mark Johnston stood in front of the technology journalist’s room at 1:30pm with an astonishing entry. “In 69% of cases in Japan and Asia Pacific, organizations were notified of their own violations by external entities,” the director of the CISO’s Google Cloud office in Asia Pacific revealed.

What unfolded during the hour-long “Cybersecurity in the Age of AI” roundtable was an honest assessment of how Google Cloud AI Technologies is trying to reverse decades of defensive obstacles, despite the same artificial intelligence tools giving attackers unprecedented capabilities.

Mark Johnston presents M-trend data for mandians showing detection failures in the Asia-Pacific

Historical background: 50 years of defensive failure

The crisis is nothing new. Johnston returned to the issue of cybersecurity pioneer James P. Anderson in 1972, in which “the systems we use don’t really protect ourselves.” “What James P Anderson said in 1972 that it was still applied today,” Johnston emphasizes that even as technology evolves, underlying security issues remain unresolved.

The persistence of basic vulnerabilities exacerbates this challenge. Threat intelligence data from Google Cloud reveals “more than 76% of violations start at the basics” (configuration errors and qualification compromises that have plagued organizations for decades). Johnston cited a recent example. “Microsoft SharePoint, a very common product that most organizations used at one point last month, also has what they call zero-day vulnerabilities.

AI Arm Race: Defenders and Attackers

Visualization of Google Cloud’s “Defender’s Dilemma” Shows scale imbalance between attackers and defenders

Kevin Curran, a senior member of IEEE and professor of cybersecurity at Ulster University, describes the current landscape as a “high stakes arm race” in which both cybersecurity teams and threat actors out-manoble each other using AI tools. “AI is a valuable asset for defenders,” explains Curran in his media notes. “Companies implement generator AI and other automation tools to analyze huge amounts of data in real time to identify anomalies.”

However, the same technology benefits the attacker. “For threat actors, AI can help streamline phishing attacks, automate the creation of malware, and scan the network for vulnerabilities,” Curran warns. The double use nature of AI creates what Johnston calls the “defender’s dilemma.”

The Google Cloud AI Initiative aims to lean these scales in favour of advocates. Johnston argued that “AI will overturn the defender’s dilemma and tilt the scale of cyberspace to provide a critical advantage over attackers. The company’s approach focuses on what is called “the myriad use cases of generated AI in defense,” extending to vulnerability discovery, threat intelligence, secure code generation, and incident response.

Project Zero’s Big Sleep: Find What AI Humans Are Overlooking

One of Google’s most compelling examples of AI-powered defenses is Project Zero’s “Big Sleep” initiative. This uses a large language model to identify vulnerabilities in real code. Johnston shared an impressive indicator. “Big Sleep uses a generator AI tool to discover a vulnerability in an open source library. For the first time, they believed that the vulnerability was discovered by an AI service.”

The evolution of the programme shows the growing capabilities of AI. “Last month we announced that we discovered over 20 vulnerabilities in various packages,” Johnston noted. “However, when I saw the Big Sleep Dashboard today, we found 47 vulnerabilities in August that were discovered in this solution.”

The progression from manual human analysis to AI-assisted discovery represents what Johnston describes as a shift as a “manual to semi-autonomous” security operation. “Gemini drives most tasks in the security lifecycle consistently and delegates tasks that cannot be automated with sufficient reliability or accuracy.”

Automation Paradox: Promises and Dangers

The Google Cloud roadmap envisages four stages of progress: manual, assisted, semi-automated, and autonomous security operations. In the semi-autonomous phase, AI systems escalate complex decisions to human operators while handling regular tasks. At the ultimate autonomy stage, AI will “drive the security lifecycle to positive outcomes on behalf of the user.”

Google Cloud’s Roadmap for the Evolution from Manuals to Autonomous AI Security Operations

However, this automation presents new vulnerabilities. When asked about the risk of excessive reliance on AI systems, Johnston acknowledged the challenge. “There’s a possibility that we can attack and manipulate this service. At this point, when we look at the tools that these agents are piped, there’s no really good framework for authenticating that it’s a real tool.”

Curran reflects this concern. “The risk for businesses is that security teams are overly dependent on AI, hinder human judgment and make their systems vulnerable to attacks. They need to clearly define their human “co-pilot” and role. ”

Real-world Implementation: Controlling the unpredictable nature of AI

Google Cloud’s approach includes practical safeguards to address one of the most problematic properties of AI: the tendency to generate unrelated or inappropriate responses. Johnston illustrated this challenge with a concrete example of contextual discrepancies that could create business risk.

“If you have a retail store, you shouldn’t give medical advice instead,” Johnston explained, explaining how AI systems move to unrelated domains. “There are times when these tools can do that.” Unpredictability represents a critical responsibility for businesses deploying AI systems for their customers. This system allows off-topic answers to confuse customers, undermine brand reputation, and even create legal exposure.

Google’s Model Armor Technology addresses this by acting as an intelligent filter layer. “Using filters and features to health checks on these responses will help organizations gain confidence,” Johnston pointed out. The system screens AI output of personally identifiable information, filters out content that is inappropriate for business context, and blocks responses that can become “out-branded” for the organization’s intended use case.

The company has also seen growing concerns about the deployment of Shadow AI. Organizations are discovering hundreds of fraudulent AI tools in their networks, creating large security gaps. Google’s sensitive data protection technology attempts to address this by scanning multiple cloud providers and on-premises systems.

Scale challenges: budget constraints and increasing threats

Johnston has identified budget constraints as a key challenge facing Asia-Pacific CISOs that arise precisely when organizations face escalation of cyber threats. The paradox is tough. As attack volumes increase, organizations lack the resources to respond appropriately.

“We look at statistics, objectively speaking, we see more noise. It may be very unrefined, but more noise is more overhead and it costs more to deal with more costs,” Johnston said. Increased attack frequency creates resource drains that many organizations cannot maintain, even if individual attacks are not necessarily more sophisticated.

Financial pressures strengthen the already complex security environment. “They are looking for partners that can help them accelerate it without hiring 10 more staff or getting a bigger budget,” Johnston explained, explaining how security leaders face pressure to do more with existing resources while increasing threats.

There are important questions left

Despite the promising capabilities of Google Cloud AI, some key questions continue. When challenged whether the defenders were actually winning this weapons race, Johnston admitted that he had “never seen a new attack using AI before,” but said that attackers would use AI to scale existing attack methods and “create a wide range of opportunities in some aspects of the attack.”

Efficacy claims also require scrutiny. Johnston cited a 50% improvement in the speed of writing in incident reports, but he admitted that accuracy is still a challenge. “It’s certainly inaccurate, but humans make mistakes too.” The acknowledgements highlight the ongoing limitations of current AI security implementations.

Looking forward to: Preparation after Quantum

Beyond current AI implementations, Google Cloud is already preparing for the next paradigm shift. Johnston revealed that the company is “already deploying post-Quantum encryption between data centers by default” to positioning positioning for future quantum computing threats that could potentially decommission current encryption.

Verdict: Careful optimism is needed

The integration of AI into cybersecurity represents both unprecedented opportunities and significant risks. While AI technology from Google Cloud demonstrates its true capabilities in vulnerability detection, threat analysis and automated response, the same technology enhances attackers’ ability to reconnaissance, social engineering, and avoid.

Curran’s assessment offers a balanced perspective. “Given how quickly technology has evolved, organizations need to adopt a more comprehensive and aggressive cybersecurity policy if they want to go ahead of the attackers.

The success of AI-powered cybersecurity depends ultimately on how these tools are thoughtfully implemented, not on the technology itself, but rather on how they maintain human surveillance and deal with basic security hygiene. As Johnston concluded, “We need to adopt these with a low-risk approach,” highlighting the need for measured implementations rather than wholesale automation.

The AI revolution in cybersecurity is ongoing, but victory belongs to those who can balance innovation with wise risk management.

Thai court fires Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for breach of ethics

0

BANGKOK, August 29 (Reuters) – Thailand’s constitutional court has dismissed Prime Minister Paetong Tarun Sinawatra from his office for ethics violations after just a year of power, dealing another crushing blow to the political dynasty of Sinawatra, which could smash the era of the new era of Thamoil.

The youngest prime minister in Thailand, Paetongtarn will become the sixth prime minister of the billionaire Sinawatras, and will be eliminated by the military or judiciary in a turbulent two-year battle over power among the nation’s fighting elites.

In that ruling, the court said Paetontunn had violated ethics in a leaked call in June. Meanwhile, she appeared to former Cambodian leader Hun Sen while the two countries were on the verge of an armed border conflict. The fight exploded a few weeks later and lasted five days.

The decision paves the way for a new prime minister’s parliamentary election, a process that could be drawn out, facing the challenge of Paetongaghn’s ruling, Fau Party, losing its negotiating power and strengthening its vulnerable alliance with the thin razor majority.

In the 6-3 decision, the court said that Paetongtarn placed her personal interests before the people of the country, hurting the country’s reputation and losing the trust of the people.

“Due to the personal relationship that appears to be consistent with Cambodia, the respondent was consistently willing to comply or act according to the wishes of the Cambodia,” the court said in a statement.

This rule brings a premature end to the protégé of her daughter Prime Minister and influential big name Thaksin Shinawatra. Paetongtarn, 39, was a political newcomer when she suddenly plunged into the spotlight a year ago after the surprising fire of her predecessor Srettha Thavisin by the same court.

Paetongtarn apologised for the leaked call and said he was trying to avoid the war.

Future uncertainty

She is the fifth prime minister in 17 years to be dismissed by the Constitutional Court, highlighting her central role in the cumbersome power struggle between the elected government of the Sinawatra clan and the ties of the widespread and influential, powerful Conservative Party and royal generals.

Next, the focus shifts to those who will replace PaetongTan, and Thaksin is expected to be at the heart of the gust of the horse trade between the party and other power brokers, with the hope that Feutai will try to take charge of the Union.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and the current Cabinet will oversee the government with the capabilities of caretakers until the new Prime Minister is elected by the House of Representatives.

There are five eligible to become prime ministers, but one of Pheu Thai, Chaikasem Nitisiri, 77, is a former attorney general with limited cabinet experience maintaining a low profile of politics.

Others include former Prayuth Chan-ocha, who retired from politics in 2014 and led a military coup against the last Pheu Thai government, and deputy prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul, before withdrawing the party from the Paetongtarn coalition over Leekum Tarn’s calls.

The ruling thrusts into more political uncertainty at a time when Thailand has boiled down a stagnant reform and a stud-ton economy, which is expected to grow to just 2.3% this year.

The Pheu Thai administration is a coalition that is likely to have only a majority and, with great public support promoting early elections, could face frequent parliamentary challenges from the opposition parties.

“Appointing a new prime minister can be difficult and can take quite a while,” said Stithorn Thananithichot, a political scientist at Chulalongkorn University.

“It’s not easy for all involved to match their interests,” he said. “Pheu Thai is at a disadvantage.”

It’s been 20 years since Hurricane Katrina denounced the Gulf

Friday marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landing on the Gulf Coast on the morning of August 29, 2005. The storm has devastated many parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, but it was New Orleans that was damaged when the city’s levees and floods were slashed. More than 1,300 people have been killed, about 80% of the city have been in the water for several weeks, and the city has lost more than 120,000 residents who have fled and never returned. How Katrina redefines New Orleans 20 years later depends on where you ask in the city. The two regions, Broadmoor and The Lower Ninth Ward, tell the competing stories of the storm.

Family remembers children injured in Minnesota shooting

Describing “an unimaginable loss,” the family recalls the murdered child the day after the attackers fired from the window of a Minneapolis Catholic School church, dived into the back of their feet. Fletcher Merkel’s father, Jesse Merkel, 8, called the suspected shooter the “co-sick man” who took the life of his son. The fatal shooting occurred before 8:30am local time on August 27 at a Catholic Catholic School, a private elementary school in Minneapolis with around 395 students. The two children killed in the shooting were 8 and 10 years old. Eight other people were injured.

Labor Day weather forecast will be “mixed bags”

Good and bad, but not ugly, most of the country explains Labor Day weather forecasts. “It’s kind of a mixed bag, but overall it’s like a thumbs that a lot of people live in,” Accuweather meteorologist Carl Erickson told USA Today. “For most of us, it looks really good – there’s no big heat, no low humidity.” The sweet spot includes a strip of nations that travel from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley, through most of the Mississippi Valley and across the Middle Atlantic countries. These areas “all look really nice,” Erickson said.

That’s bad for Jerry Jones, the Cowboys.

0

play

  • The Cowboys traded perhaps their best player, Mika Parsons, for two first rounds and a pro bowler.
  • When Parsons joins the Packers, he also cut his record deal.
  • Dallas owner Jerry Jones could face even more questions than he did for balance this summer.

When I thought Mika Parsons would become the star of the latest Dallas Cowboys, he literally got a figurative – nine digit extension…

When Dallas owner Jerry Jones loses negotiations with one of his premier players, he decides to take another bath…

When you think the latest NFL superstar holds out, holds in, I’ll hurt, I’ll exchange me, now you’ll just pay me playbook for wealth and get his bag…

When you assume everything that unfolds as it has so many NFL quarters often have – especially North Texas – Jones and “American team” Parsons ship Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, many of America actually loved them, and have been generally associated over the past 30 years.

Hoo ‘Boys!

Naturally, a transaction of this scale will soon help to dissect and declare who won and lost.

winner

Mika Parsons

As he waited and waited in Frisco, Texas and Oxnard, California, he eventually became disillusioned with Jones and his typically polarizing negotiation rhetoric, and wanted to reveal it in trade demand. Surprisingly, Parsons not only embraced his wish, but was moved to a better team, and according to reports, he was caught up in a record four-year, $188 million contract with a guaranteed $136 million. Currently set to make $47 million a year, Parsons not only resets his non-quarterly contract scale several digits, but has surpassed the recently extended TJ Watts.

David Murgetta

It’s amazing how good agents can play players when an NFL team actually invites him into the process.

Green Bay Packers

USA Today Sports had already predicted them as the 2025 NFC champions. – And their Super Bowl odds only get significantly shorter from here. Thanks to its stability and its approach to drafting and development, GM Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur were generally hugging. However, Parsons’ arrival will further disrupt the opponents of the team, who finished eighth in the league with 45 sacks last season.

Aidan Hutchinson

The Detroit Lions star could be the next pass rush to get paid. He almost certainly won’t cut $47 million, but the big deal for Parsons should help Hutchinson’s cause every time he gets mad at the table.

Trey Hendrickson

Cincinnati Bengals Star – It is set to reach just around $30 million in 2025, but it could also benefit from the Parsons atrium. If Cincy did that route, Hendrickson would win at least $36 million in franchise tags in 2026, but that number could rise as the pass rush pay scale continues to explode, and Parsons will take it to another level. Apart from that, Hendrickson will almost certainly be leading more than $40 million a year from the team that signed him in March next year.

Philadelphia Eagles

Next Thursday night, the regular season kickoff game against the Cowboys is beginning to look like a Super Bowl Champion speed bump where there appears to be only one legitimate challenger (Washington) in NFC East. No team has won a division in back-to-back seasons since the Eagles sat at the summit from 2001-04, but it’s even more difficult to bet on them.

NBC

On September 28th, the Cowboys Packers’ Sunday Night Football. Legal Chance This is the best regular season game of all time, given that this subplot has been added to what is already a match between the two most popular clubs.

loser

Jerry Jones

Certainly, you’ll get two first-round picks – although you’re likely to land behind round one, there’s nothing frontline player like the Pro Bowl defensive lineman. I also have a cowboy Many Now that Parsons doesn’t take up a significant portion, as QB Dak Prescott and WR Ceedee Lamb have already done, there’s a more pay cap to import and pay other players.

But man. Jones literally just stomps out his best player, which also sends a bad message to the guys currently in the locker room and those who might consider joining it. And given that his summer shenanigans led to this outcome, fans find it hard to believe that Jones will continue to ask him to abandon his de facto general manager duties… he’s not to hear. And if players like Heck, Laremy Tunsil and Jamal Adams have won two first rounds in recent years, did Jones really score the biggest player’s return that could be rounded out as a generational pass rusher? Regardless of the shape the Clark trio and his two future teammates take, it is highly feasible and they don’t actually fill in the void left by Parsons from a production or public relations perspective.

Recently paid pass rush

Watt of the Steelers, Miles Garrett of the Browns, Daniel Hunter of the Texans, Max Crosby of the Raiders all signed at least $35 million this offseason, and at least $40 million for Watt and Garrett’s case. Oops?

Kenny Clark

He quietly gave the Packers nine really good seasons, and his 10th was full of possibilities – sorry, man.

Brian Schottenheimer

Being a rookie head coach is tough enough without losing his best player a week before the start of his inauguration season. However, there is usually hope around the cowboy, but perhaps Schottenheimer (51) enjoys at least a more measured period of bounty as Dallas clearly changes to what is adjacent to the reconstruction mode and retool mode.

Dallas fans

First, Luka, then Mika. But hey, the Mavericks got caught up in the Cooper Flag, Y’all – maybe the NFL script will offer the Cowboys manning the arch at the top of next year’s draft? right?

A victim of a shooting at a Minneapolis school has identified: “Unbelievable losses”

“Remember Fletcher for the sake of who he is, not for the act that ended his life,” Jesse Merkel said. “Give your child an extra hug and kiss today. We love you, Fletcher. You will always be with us.”

The fatal shooting occurred before 8:30am local time on August 27 at a Catholic Catholic School, a private elementary school in Minneapolis with around 395 students. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, the shooter approached the outside of the church building and fired inwards at the children sitting at Pues.

The two children killed in the shooting were 8 and 10 years old. Authorities say 18 other people, 15 of them, 15 of them, and six students in the ’80s, were shot. All injured people were expected to recover, but some families say they have a long way to go to recover from serious bullet wounds.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims who were shot in the attack, but family and friends have begun identifying loved ones.

“As a community, we are responsible for ensuring that no children, parents, teachers need to experience what they have experienced today,” Headmaster Matt DeBoer said at an August 27 press conference. “I lost two angels today.

Fletcher Merkel

At a press conference outside the Catholic Catholic school, Jesse Merkel recalled her son Fletcher as a very loving child who enjoyed friends, fishing, cooking and “the sport he was allowed to play.”

The murderer’s violent actions caused great losses to Fletcher’s family, Jesse Merkel said. “We will never be allowed to hug him, talk to him, play with him, see him grow into a wonderful young man on the path he is going to become,” he added.

Fletcher was the second youngest of the four children, family spokesman Blois Olson told NBC News. According to NBC News and ABC11, two brothers, who were not injured in the shooting, were attending Mass together on August 27th.

“The holes in our hearts and lives will never be filled, but we hope that in the future our family will find healing,” Jesse Merkel added. He also shared prayers of healing, recovery and strength for other victims and their families.

“In the past days I’ve heard many stories from within the church explaining the swift and heroic behavior of children and adults. Without these people and their selfless behavior, this could have been a tragedy of many magnitudes. For these people, I am grateful,” he said.

In his final remarks, Jesse Merkel asked the public about his family and school community sadness and sympathy for “trying to understand such meaningless acts of violence.”

Harper Moisky

The second victim killed in the shooting was identified as 10-year-old Harper Moysky, according to a joint statement shared with the press on behalf of his family.

They read the statements of Michael Moyski and Jackie Flavin, according to CBS News and KSTP-TV. “Harper was a bright, fun, deeply loved 10-year-old, and her laughter, kindness and spirit were touched by everyone who knew her.”

Harper’s family said their hearts are “broken not only as parents, but also Harper’s sister, who worships her sister and grieves her unimaginable loss.” They added that they are grieving for those who are mourning and those who are injured in the attack.

The family pointed out that while they focused on healing with their daughter, they believed that “it is important for her memory to promote behavior.”

“There should never be a family member who has to endure this type of pain. We urge our leaders and communities to take meaningful steps to deal with the country’s gun violence and mental health crisis,” the statement said. “Changes are possible and necessary. So Harper’s story won’t be yet another with a long line of tragedy.”

“We are deeply grateful for the pouring of love, prayer and support,” the statement continued. “Harper’s light always shines through us. I hope that her memories inspire others to work towards a safer and more caring world.”

Sofia Fortias

According to GoFundMe, which was organized for her family, Sofia Fortias was injured in a shooting and remained in danger after undergoing emergency surgery. The 12-year-old was said to be “full of young girls who are cheerful, kind and fighting for life.”

“The path ahead of her is long, uncertain and incredibly difficult, but she is strong and she is not alone,” says the GoFundme page.

Sofia’s younger brother was also at school during the shooting, but according to the page, he was unharmed. The mother, a pediatric emergency nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center, worked to help the injured victim before she learned that her daughter was seriously injured.

Father Timothy Sass of St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis also issued a statement confirming Sofia was injured in the shooting. According to SAS, the Forchas family, along with several students from the Catholic Announcement School, is a parishioner of the church.

“Among the 20 shooting victims were (a) the incredible seventh grader Sofia Forsha,” SAS said in a statement. “Sophia was born and raised in our Parish of St. Mary and was immersed in church life with several generations of large families who are dedicated members of our congregation.”

Endre Gunter was shot twice, according to aunt Natalie Davis, who organized the Gofundme page to help the 13-year-old medical bills.

“It is impossible to understand this act of violence against a child in a place that should have been a sanctuary of peace and security,” Davis wrote on the page. “Faced with unimaginable fear and pain, Endre has demonstrated strength and faith beyond his age.”

Before Endre had the surgery, Davis said he asked the doctor to pray with him. The doctor later told the family that Endre survived the surgery and “fought through the horrifying events with the courage that affected the entire medical team.”

“That prayer moment, and Endre’s resilience, will remain with our family forever,” his aunt said. “Now he is recovering from surgery in the hospital and is surrounded by his loved ones and the best medical team possible. The road ahead is a long way to be grateful that he is still with us.”

David Hegg

David Haeg, a young student at Annunciation Catholic School, was “tragically injured” during the shooting on August 27, according to GoFundMe, which was organized on behalf of his family.

“Our school community is heartbroken as we gather around David Haeg, one of our own,” Page said. “He has a long path to recovery, but he shows incredible strength and resilience.”

The fundraiser will support David’s medical expenses. “His parents can focus entirely on being around him and help him heal.” According to the GoFundMe page, he is expected to remain in the pediatric intensive care unit for at least five days after undergoing surgery.

The fundraiser asked the public and the community to pray for David and his family.

No, there’s no “fad” shooting by trans people

play

The familiar story appeared on social media shortly after the filming of the Minneapolis Catholic School on August 27th.

This happens every time there is a shooting in the US. Commentators and politicians with large social media make conspiracy theories that the attacker was trans and that his claims were quickly exposed.

However, this time the argument was correct. The shooter who killed two children and injured 17 more were actually transgender. Cue your anger. Right-wing commentators, lawmakers and influencers seized two years ago stories of America witnessing the “fad” of violence from the trans community.

That’s not true.

Americans who identify as transgender will attack and kill people at an unbalanced rate. And there is no evidence that gender identity had an impact on Robin Westman’s decision to shoot children at Catholic schools, according to some experts on extremism and mass shooting interviews by USA Today. Rather, the evidence left by attackers shows deep interest in mass shooters and mass shootings, suggesting involvement in internet subcultures that have become obsessed with these attacks and become known as “nihilistic violent extremism.”

It is essentially murdered for murder. The quest for fame and infamy within groups on the internet has characterized some of the recent deadly school shootings, stated Michael Jensen, research director at the National Consortium for Research on Terrorism and Responding to Terrorism.

“What’s perpetuating the cycle is that this ecosystem is online and wants individuals to gain fame for emulating past attackers and do so,” said Jensen, who maintains an in-depth database of incidents of large-scale violence in America. “In their minds, bringing them just one thing is doing more importantly – it does a huge harm that drives their names to the top of the list. This is about individuals seeking notoriety and recognition from a particular community.”

There is no epidemic of trans violence

The allegations that trans people are disproportionately responsible for massive American violence arise every few months.

That was never true, Jensen said.

“I know I don’t recognize any evidence in support of the allegations that trans people are disproportionately responsible for large-scale violent events in the United States, such as school shootings,” Jensen said. “In fact, the data suggests the exact opposite.”

Jensen’s study has identified more than 1,000 mass casualties parcels since its inception in 2023 that perpetrators had explicitly intended to kill or hurt as many people as possible.

And there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Westman was influenced by another community in the case of the Minneapolis shooting.

The latest example of nihilistic violent extremism

Two videos posted by Westman on YouTube suggest that the attackers were involved in an online subculture that respects a large number of shooters, said Hannah Gais, a senior research analyst at Southern Poverty Law Center. The Westman’s writings, phrases and symbolisms depicted by the archer on the weapons used in the attacks, as well as the clear obsession with past shooting attacks, Gais said.

“It showed a mishmash that idolizes other mass shooters,” Gais said. “To me, this feels like an example of nihilistic violent extremism.”

The term “nihilistic violent extremism” was mentioned by three other experts on mass violence who spoke to Jensen and USA Today. It describes the extreme online subculture where participants are absorbed into mass shootings and obsessed with mass shootings and massive shooters. That subculture is sometimes referred to as the “true crime community.”

Again, this world is nothing new. Over the years, online bulletin board communities like 8kun (formerly 8chan) have celebrated massive shootings and respected murderers.

Westman’s video shows weapons scrawled in the names of at least three other mass shooters. They also provide other clues that Minneapolis attackers were involved in this subculture, including the use of certain memes, phrases and anti-Semitic terms.

What they are not showing is certain political ideologies, said Alejandra Carabaro, a clinical instructor at Harvard Law School’s Cyber Law Clinic, who carefully examined videos of Minneapolis shooters.

“Of the pages and pages and pages in this manifest, they are all inconsistent and self-contradictory,” Carabalo said. “The way these people find meaning in life is to commit these atrocities and do whatever they can to talk about them.”

In a violent and hateful world

What is noteworthy about the gender identity of Minneapolis shooters is the fact that shooters generally seem to have chosen to interact with online communities that generally deny and make the LGBTQ+ community evil, specifically transgender people.

In that respect, along with the apparent obsession with other mass shootings by Minneapolis shooters, Carabaro said this week’s attacks mirror a January shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee. In that case, a 17-year-old black student injured two people and killed another student and himself. The attacker’s writings and social media posts show that he was obsessed with mass shooters and expressed his white supremacist beliefs.

These two shootings show that young people can be highly poisoned by the worship of large scale shooters, and are willing to associate the same ethnic or gender identity groups to which they belong, with groups they openly dislike, Carabaro said. It will make them feel more self-loathing and confused, she said.

“It’s hard to explain to people that these people don’t actually believe anything,” Carabaro said. “It’s hard to explain this kind of level of black Pirnihilism to anyone, because it basically means you don’t believe anything. You believe everything is pointless.”

At a press conference on the day of the attack, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged the public not to use shootings “to exacerbate our trans community.”

The continuous and sincere tale of the trans community disproportionately violent and mentally unstable appears to have steamed since this week’s shooting.

And that backlash has sparked concern among transgender Americans.

“As the investigation into yesterday’s shootings unfolds, we ask the public and the media to remember that we should not use one-person actions to target or condemn the entire community,” said Ash Lazaro Oh, a spokesman for advocates of trans equality. “Trans and non-binary people in particular are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.”

Corvette Museum debuted in 1974, owned by legendary creators

  • “The Godfather of the Corvette” Zora Arcas Dontov defended the car’s V-8 engine and performance legacy.
  • His personal 1974 Corvette Stingray, restored by the National Corvette Museum, will be published.
  • The restored Corvette features a unique customization that reflects Arkus-Duntov’s personal touch and passion for the car.

Zora Arkus-Duntov defended car production in the 1950s and was known as the “The Godfather of the Corvette” for putting a V-8 engine in the General Motors to make it a true performance car.

However, Arkus-Duntov owned one Corvette in his lifetime: the 1974 Corvette Stingray. When the car unveils at the 31st anniversary ceremony of the National Corvette Museum on August 28-30, 2025, the public can see the car returning to its full glory.

The car has been undergoing thorough and expensive restoration for the past two years, in preparation for its release and permanent display at the newly opened Hall of Fame exhibition. The museum is located across the street from GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Factory in Kentucky. This is the factory where GM builds the Corvette.

Museum staff say that since the museum first acquired it in 1995, Arkus-Duntov’s cars have been a major attraction to attract Corvette enthusiasts.

“For the museum and the Corvette community, this car is valuable. It’s kind of one. It’s like finding the number one 1953 Corvette.” “For Corvette enthusiasts, they remember Zora and his wife Elphy in that car, so they start to see this car.”

Arkus-Duntov is coming to America

According to a 2014 biography of the car and driver, Arcas Dontov, born in 1909 to wealthy Russian parents in Brussels, Belgium, spent more than 20 years as an engineer at GM. In the 1930s he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Charlottenburg in Berlin. However, during this time he saw a troubling situation in Germany, especially for Jews. So Arcas Dontov and his wife, former Elfi Wolf, fled for Paris and then fled to America.

He joined GM in 1953 as a development engineer, and Arkus-Duntov quickly fell in love with the Harley Earl Corvette prototype at New York Motorma in 1953.

“(Arkus-Duntov) fired the full brunt of his persuasive power to convince Chevrolet boss Ed Cole and GM R&D director Maurice Ollie that the production corvette was GM’s “turning point” and that his contributions would help contribute to what the driver wrote.

Make your Corvette a world-class car

Ryan Eichler, chief marketing officer at the Corvette Museum, said the 1953 Corvette included a “Blue Flame Six” engine. According to Motorrend, the Blue Flame Six was a six-cylinder engine that produced 150 horsepower. Arkus-Duntov knew that the Corvette needed something more powerful.

“We consider him to be the Godfather of the Corvette because when you think about Corvette’s DNA, it’s about performance, innovation and design,” Eichler said. “The first Corvette had a design, but he convinced GM to make it a performance car. He convinced GM to put it in the first V8 in 1955.”

Arkus-Duntov believed that the Corvette would be a true performance car. GM enters the V8 and “opens the market and sets the tone for Corvette’s success in the remaining 70+ years,” says Eichler.

But his contributions exceeded that. When Corvette sales shaking in 1957 and GM considered killing the car, Arkus-Duntov stepped up again. He remade it as a Chevrolet Hello car. The Hello Car is a stylish, high-end car that aims to shed light on the brand’s technology and design skills. The aim is to attract new car buyers to the brand, not the mass sellers themselves.

Arkus-Duntov’s Corvette strategy has earned him an internal respect and “work to evolve the Corvette from a fashionable, stringless two-seater to a world-class sports car,” the car and driver writes.

The only one

Arkus-Duntov only owned it before his death in Michigan on April 21, 1996, despite his apparent passion for Corvette.

“I imagined myself as a senior engineer at GM in the 1960s and 1970s, and I didn’t have to buy a car,” Eichler said. “He would take prototypes and drive them as a daily driver.”

However, in 1974, a year before he was due to retire, Arkus-Duntov decided to give himself a retirement gift. It was the last year of a big block V8 engine for cars and he wanted to get one given that engine was working so hard to push it to be in the Corvette, Garrett said.

So Arcas Dontoff purchased a 1974 Corvette Stringray from a dealer in Michigan where he lived at the time. Garrett didn’t know the name of the dealer who sold the car to Arkus-Duntov or how much he paid for it. Garrett said the Corvette was sold in 1974 for around $5,000.

Arks Dundov’s corvette was made at GM’s factory in St. Louis, Missouri, Garrett said. The first 1953 model was handmade in Flint, Michigan. That year, I only managed to do about 300.

In 1954, GM moved production of the Corvette to St. Louis, which remained until 1981. GM then moved production to its current location at its Bowling Green Assembly Factory in Kentucky.

Eichler said that Arcas Dontov bought the car from silver, but a year later he repainted it into a “bright green” colour of a Corvette.

“Zola and many designers are never satisfied with what they have and want to customize it,” Eichler said. “So he had it painted green and then he left it to a friend to repaint it.

According to Eichler, the museum does not have a document on when the painting job took place, but the two-tone colors present in the car are light blue and dark blue, known as Spectramaster Medium Blue. The museum doesn’t have a specific name for dark blue, Eichler said.

“Zola loved the job of painting cars so much that he had his wife stand next to her car and draw it,” Garrett said. The portrait is at the National Corvette Museum.

Restoring classics with great care

Arkus-Duntov owned the car until the mid-1980s before selling it to couples. They owned it until 1995, but they donated it to the museum, Garrett said. The museum has never evaluated an Arcas Dontov car, so Garrett doesn’t know how much it is worth. However, he said the 1974 Corvette wasn’t that popular and didn’t bring much money.

“The nice stuff is on sale for around $15,000,” Garrett said. “For history, he’ll say he’s quite worthwhile.”

The Arkus-Duntov Corvette was on display at the National Corvette Museum from 1995 to 2023.

“We were redesigning the area and then we discovered how much damage the car had been sitting there and how much rust there was,” Garrett said. “This was Zora’s daily driver, and he drove it in the snow in the rain… So the fuel line was rotten and rotten, the gas line was rotten… so it was when we started talking about preserving the car.”

Eichler added that he has 100,831 miles when Arkus-Duntov’s car was donated. When a car is donated to the museum, it becomes an artifact and is not driven, so there are still 100,831 miles of miles.

For nearly two years, the museum team meticulously repaired the vehicle. Garrett said they would remove the body from the frame and peel the frame down to exposed metal to secure the rust. They restored full front and rear suspension. They put in a new braking system, a new fuel system, and rebuilt the engine and power steering system.

“The body and inside were pretty amazing and there was a lot of Zora history, so we let it go,” Garrett said.

The parts to do the entire project cost around $20,000, but that number doesn’t include the 964 hours of business hours spent on the work. Garrett and Eichler said it was worth it.

“You can look at the car and see how special it is by its appearance,” Eichler said. “There’s a special touch like a two-tone blue, and I paint Zad’s hands on each door. He took the time to customize it and make it his own.”

In addition to being able to see the Arkus-Duntov corvette, visitors will see museum staff working on the next project: Preservation of the LT1 Corvette in 1971, Garrett said.

With 115,000 square feet of Corvette and Corvette artifacts, the museum is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm and has a general admission fee of $25.
