Government shutdowns enter day 7 as Trump’s signal shift: Live Update

play

WASHINGTON – The federal government closure entered its seventh day on Tuesday, October 7th.

But in a major change, President Donald Trump is now expressing his openness as one of the Democratic Party’s main policy demands.

“If we did the right deal, I would do it. That’s true,” Trump was asked by a reporter Monday if he was willing to do business with Democrats about expired Obamacare subsidies for low-income families.

Republican leaders in the White House and Congress have previously said they will not negotiate healthcare policies once governments reopen. But Trump said he began talking to Democrats about the subject.

“We’re negotiating with Democrats who could lead to good things,” Trump said. “And I’m talking about good things about healthcare.”

Johnson questioned the legality of Backpay, but stress workers should get it

Citing “a new legal analysis,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that some legal analysts believe federal workers have no right to pay. Federal workers hope to get their wages back, and President Trump told him he feels the same way.

White House memo says some people are not entitled to repayment

As the federal government has hit thousands of workers amid the government shutdown, management officials say the White House draft memo says they have no right to pay off wages when employees return.

The threat of withholding salaries from federal workers raises the stakes of a showdown between Congressional Democrats, White House and Congressional Republicans, raising the stakes over funding to the government, but it is not clear whether the Trump administration will continue. Axios first reported on the White House draft memo.

The Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that 750,000 federal employees could be abandoned due to the closure. Their total daily pay is around $400 million.

The U.S. Office of Human Resources released a memo in September about the shutdown indicating workers will be paid.

“After the expenditure lapse ends, employees who need to perform the work that was excluded during the revocation will receive retroactive pay for those durations of work,” the OPM memo says.

The 2019 law signed by Trump says federal workers who are overthrown during the expiration of government funds will be “paid during the expiration period.” The law states that it applies to government funding lapses from December 22, 2018.

Virginia Governor’s race is closure unfolding

President Donald Trump’s move to cut the federal government earlier this year has already been the focus of Virginia’s governor’s contest.

The old Dominion nation has more federal workers than most people. Democrats believe thousands more people are in favor, coupled with the ongoing government shutdown that began on October 1, coupled with the frustration that simmered in one go.

“Our money is pending. It’s painful,” says Chris Witter, 54, the stay-at-home father of two 16-year-old girls whose wife works for the federal government.

He condemns Republican closure and shows that the vote is most Americans agree.

The race between Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republican Winn Therm Earl Sears was already a number of elections as the first national referendum on Trump’s agenda, but the closure sent the race overdrive.

MTG, Obamacare’s “Not Fan” is seeking an extension of subsidies

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, a Trump supporter who calls Obamacare “not a fan,” has joined Democrats in pursuit of an extension of federal grants under the Affordable Care Act to lower the costs of health insurance. If the tax credit expires.

Senate Democrats have refused to reopen the government since October 1 by insisting on recovering cuts in Medicaid funding and extending Obamacare subsidies. Republicans who control Congress argue that Medicaid cuts will remove undocumented immigrants and force healthy citizens to work for Medicaid benefits. Green is not trying to restore Medicaid cuts.

Trump and GOP Congress leaders say the government can negotiate Obamacare subsidies before the government reopens and funds expire on December 31st.

“I’m ticking my lane,” said Green, who joined Congress in 2021, 10 years after lawmakers created Obamacare. “And I’m absolutely tired of double my health insurance premiums if the tax credit expires this year.”– Defeat Janssen

Trump did not identify Democrats, which are part of the debate. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer has rejected Trump’s claim that there are health care negotiations between the president and Democrats.

“Trump’s claims are not true, but if he’s finally ready to work with the Democrats, we’ll be at the table,” Schumer said in a statement.

The senator added, “If President Trump and the Republicans are ready to sit down and do something medical for American families, then Democrats are there — ready to do that.”

– Joey Garrison

Around 750,000 federal workers were placed in Fara during the closure, but President Donald Trump has not followed the warning of a massive layoff across federal workers.

The White House said last week that the layoffs were “immediate.” White House management and budget director Russell Vert told Republican lawmakers last Wednesday on October 1st that cuts would begin in “one or two.”

But so far, it’s all a threat and no action.

Trump said Monday that a massive layoff remains on the table. “That’s possible,” Trump said when asked if another defeat in the Republican Senate fundraising bill could lead to a layoff. “At some point it will be.”

The Supreme Court argues the prohibition of “conversion therapy.” Live coverage.

The therapist argues that Colorado’s ban on “conversion therapy” violates her right to free speech. About half of the states also have similar restrictions.

play

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court is back in the culture war, debating whether states can block licensed therapists from trying to change the sexuality and gender identity of young people.

On October 7th, the court is considering the Christian counselor’s claim that Colorado’s “conversion therapy” ban violates her right to free speech.

Colorado officials argue that the state’s 2019 law, which resembles the limits of about half the state, is necessary for “overwhelming evidence” that conversion therapy can harm young people, including increasing the risk of depression and suicide.

The case comes months after the High Court ruled in June that it could ban genders that affirm the care of minors. And the judge will consider later in the term, whether the state can prevent transgender girls and women from playing on women’s sports teams.

Colorado Act signed by the first openly gay elected governor of Colorado

The state’s challenged regulations were signed into law in 2019 by Gov. Jared Police, the country’s first openly gay elected governor.

“In just 27 years, we have made a significant change from what was called a ‘state of hatred’ to where all Coloradan rights are respected,” Police said.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who defends the law, is one of the candidates running in next year’s election to replace Police.

In 2023, the Supreme Court rejected challenges similar to Washington law brought about by Christian marriage and family counselors.

Three conservative justices – Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh said they would acknowledge the appeal. It takes four people justice to agree to hear the case.

Thomas said the state’s law is “point-based and content-based discrimination is in its purest form.”

Shannon W. Stevenson, Colorado’s top appeals lawyer, defends the state’s ban.

She was appointed Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, running for governor in 2023.

Who is refuting Colorado’s “conversion therapy” ban?

Jim Campbell, the top lawyer for Alliance Defense Freedom, represents Colorado counselor Kaylee Chile, who challenges the state’s ban on conversion therapy.

Alliance Defending Freedom is a conservative legal organization that has frequently appeared in courts in recent years when it comes to well-known social issues. They told me they had to create a website for same-sex weddings.

Is the Trump administration involved in the incident?

The case is about states rather than federal law, but the Department of Justice is involved. At the request of the department, Justice Department lawyer Hashim M. Moopan gets time in oral discussions to support the counselor’s challenges.

The Justice Department has already told the judiciary that Colorado is “shooting one side of the ongoing debate in the mental health community about how to discuss issues with children with gender and sexuality.”

Donald Trump and “Fafo” will return in January. Heggs took it home

0

Donald Trump’s presidency has several acronyms.

Of course, the Maga stands for “Make America Great Again” and is sometimes changed for other initiatives such as “Make America Healthy” and “Maha.”

But all of the popular acronyms are not being played by Trump this year. “Taco” was created by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong, and described how some investors predict market rebound amid Trump’s repeated tariff policies. (“Trump always drives out chickens.”) The government’s efficiency department has also been reduced to doge. This is the same name as the popular meme that became Memecoin supported by Elon Musk.

“FAFO” has also appeared several times throughout the presidency, what does that mean?

What does “fafo” mean?

FAFO abbreviates “f —Please check with others.”

It is often used as a warning that if someone is acting inappropriately they will face consequences. This phrase has been used outside of politics long before the Trump administration.

How do you use “FAFO” in (political) statements?

Pete Hegses, head of the newly created “The Department of War,” previously the Department of Defense, used the term in a recent meeting with hundreds of military commanders.

“If our enemies foolishly chose to challenge us, they would be crushed by the violence, accuracy and ferociousness of the war department,” Heggs said on September 30.

Musk recently posted a fake photo of Trump’s spelling “Fafo” and “Cool Shell Formation Found on Beach Walk.” Posted on the day former FBI director James Comey was indicted by the Department of Justice and there was a clear nod to Comey’s post on social media at the beach earlier this year, with “8647.”

Trump used “FAFO” in images generated by his own AI in January amid the potential tensions of the trade war with Colombia. The United States and Colombia were engaged in deportation showdowns.

Federal closure, Doge reduces echo in the race of Virginia Governor

0

Trump’s cuts will turn the Democratic Abigail Spanberger to Virginia voters, and the government across Republicans off winsome square.

play

Fairfax, Va. — President Donald Trump’s move took a move earlier this year to cut the size of the federal government.

The ongoing government shutdown that began on October 1 has left thousands more bored, which could slow down important services and lead to mass shootings.

Now, Democrats hope that these boiling frustration will boil in their favor with one of the most consequential elections of the year, the race of the governor of Virginia.

Virginia’s governor’s contests are often considered the first referendum on the current president’s agenda. This year, former members of Congress, Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Colonel will drive away Winsam Earl Sears Company in a race that could generate momentum for the Nationalist Party, or in a race that could rob its efforts to revive it.

Trump has not carried Virginia in any of his three runs for the presidency, according to Virginia Speaker Don Scott, who represents Virginia’s House Speaker Don Scott, who represents Navy-heavy areas, including Portsmouth and Norfolk.

Government cuts could also be a key race factor, he and others said.

About 22,100 Virginia people lost their jobs between January and May after government efficiency x larger stripes of federal officials, according to Federal Reserve data. Major private sector employers have fired thousands more.

“There’s no doubt that it has an impact on attitudes,” said Whit Ayers, a longtime Republican strategist and president of North Star Opinion Research. “It’s extremely difficult to find someone in the Northern Virginia area who doesn’t know anyone affected by the Doge cut.”

Government closures could put an even more strain on the soft economy in the region.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty, there’s a lot of anxiety because there are so many people, and there are people across the region who aren’t paid right now,” speaker Scott told USA Today.

Shutdown showdown

Standing outside the Fairfax County government center recently, Chris Witter, 54, listed the federal closures in his plans to support Spanburger.

A self-proclaimed centreist, Witter has expressed concern that his wife, who works for the federal government, will be unpaid until the closure ends. He also feared that staffing and fleeing the Veterans Affairs Bureau could delay his disability benefits.

“Our money is pending. It’s painful,” the father of the stay-at-home father of the two 16-year-old girls said in an interview.

Witter condemned the closure of Republicans, calling it “abuse of power.”

An October 2nd poll by the Washington Post found that nearly half of Americans were Trump and Republicans responsible for the closure. If these numbers are held in places like Virginia, you can spell out the fate of the GOP.

For example, an Emerson College survey released last week found that Trump in Virginia was underwater, with 42% approved for work performance and 54% disapproved.

The longest closure in history occurred during Trump’s first term in 2018 and lasted for 35 days. Researchers at George Mason estimated that the area would cost around $1.6 billion.

Republicans and Democrats have shown no signs of compromise so far, making it increasingly possible for a long shutdown this year.

Spanberger, 46, consistently led Earl Sears, 61, to 10 points in a recent survey, but has used government closures to strengthen criticism of his opponents.

“Trump is currently threatening Doge 2.0 and she’s defending it again,” Spanberger wrote about her opponent on social media.

Meanwhile, Earl Sears, the state’s current lieutenant governor, claimed Democrats were at fault for the closure in a post on social media site X. Her campaign cited comments that have recently been widely accused of being shut down to portray a Democrat general who was uninterested and hated.

Doge Effect

Bob Holworth, a longtime Virginia political analyst, bets Democrats will increase voter turnout, especially in deep blue pockets near Washington, D.C.

Typically, Virginia residents are about 1 million fewer people in gubernatorial elections than in the presidential elections. Mobilizing even a small number of voters can tilt the scale, he said.

Earl Sears tried to distance himself from the cuts that took place before the start of the Trump administration when entrepreneur Elon Musk led an effort to trim the size of the federal government.

Her campaign highlighted the thousands of Virginia jobs created by her and Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Glenn Youngkin is a culture war issue that is limited to one period under federal regulations and involves transgender students using bathrooms in schools.

So far, the effects of doge and government shutdowns on Virginia’s voter sentiment seem to be mixed.

55 miles south of the country’s capital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, signs of the blue garden of Spanburger signs grassy front lawns near the historic downtown of dozens of Spanburger.

Stewart Smothers, 45, said Dodge Cutt caused a frenzy in Fredericksburg. “Many people question whether they will lose their jobs. “He is going to vote for Spanberger.

However, he is not sure that he voted for Trump in last year’s presidential election and has since been “threwed into chaos” their personal lives, considering Virginia’s race.

“It was a big stressor there for a while,” he said. “I’m interested.”

Further north, David Purdy said the cut was the best when he voted early in the cloudy days in Fairfax County on a recent Monday afternoon.

Purdy, 56, lost her job in March at global consulting firm ICF International.

“I got all of this free time for the Dodge cut, so I thought I could drive away a lot of people who had their hands inside,” Purdy said. He described himself as a lifelong Republican, but said he had voted for the Democratic candidate since Trump’s first election in 2016.

“It’s not the only problem.”

Other voters USA Today said the federal cuts would not affect who they are helping.

Arlinda Hanna, 45, acknowledged that Doge’s measures have affected the belts of people in northern Virginia.

But she said, “That’s not the only problem.”

Hannah, a mother of three, said she is worried about the policy at Fairfax County schools.

She voted for Earl Sears when early voting began in late September.

“We have federal jurisdiction and we have to follow the law and we feel it’s a shame that they put their agenda and belief in the law,” Hanna said.

“For me, I will always vote morally by my (Christian) faith,” she added. “That’s my compass.”

Taylor Swift confronts news rumours and explains Fallon’s “Wood”

0

The audience cheered loudly while Jimmy Fallon introduced Taylor Swift, almost like a tour of Elas in Studio 6B.

Over three blocks, Fallon asked about his engagement to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelsey, who spoke at Selena Gomez’s wedding, and the inspiration behind “Wood.” And Swift answered a difficult question.

Before coming out, Fallon performed a dizzying tap dance with Bob Mackie-esque showgirls. After the intro to the show was played, his monologue was filled with Swift jokes.

“This is the most popular ticket in town,” he said. “Today, I called Pope Leo and said, ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t have any seats anymore.’ I just want to thank the Swifit people all over the world who are watching over us tonight.”

The joke didn’t stop. “Even though it’s October, like everyone else, I spent the weekend looking for Easter eggs. I listened to the albums many times this weekend. I think I’m in love with Travis. … Life as a Showgirl is full of references and mathematics to Shakespeare, but at this point Taylor is basically the Ministry of Education. … Taylor broke multiple records on Spotify. … Shakespeare was like, ‘I’m a murderer.'” Also. ‘”

The band was in a flurry when Fallon tried to make a joke other than Swift, “Stop wasting time, take her out.”

As the audience throbbed, she appeared from the blue curtains in a silver Giuseppe di Morabito dress.

“I’m starting to see, and congratulate you on your engagement,” Fallon said. As the camera zooms in on a rock designed by Kindred Lubeck, Swift explained how Kelce proposed to her when she announced her 12th season after recording the podcast on August 13th.

“He had it for a really long time before handing it over to me,” Swift said, flashing the “Old Mine Brilliant Cut” diamond. “He’s the person I’ve ever met. I don’t mean anything to anyone else, but the fact is that this is the person I’m with every day.”

Fallon moved to the rumor factory and read out five rumors that made gossip headlines about the singer. At least one was true.

  • She turned down the Super Bowl halftime show because the NFL refused to allow her to own footage.
  • Your best friend, Ed Sheeran, has learned of her engagement, just like everyone else. (That was true. “He doesn’t have a phone,” she said.
  • In your speech at Selena Gomez’s wedding, you joked that Selena had hit you to the altar. (She said she had spoken about her outfit when she met Gomez in 2008.)
  • He was spotted walking a mysterious dog in Florida.
  • You can hear Travis Kelce performing his harmony on “Opalite.”

From the commercial break, the two quickly fought the match.

  • Who was the last person to text? “Serena”
  • What was the last movie you saw? “The Next Battle… I’m very fortunate to be able to live in the same era as Paul Thomas Anderson.”
  • What related activities did you do last fall? “I baked cinnamon roll the other day.”
  • Not on a new album, what was your last song you listened to? “So I listened to The Tortured Poets Division to say goodbye.”
  • Is there a song from the artist you last listened to? “Tate McRae’s new song, “Tit for Tat,” is here.”
  • The last person you said, “So, baby, is it show business for you?” Without a answer found, she told Fallon.

To finish her part of the show, Swift sat at the round table with Fallon, who asked about the inspiration behind some of her songs. They began with “Opalite” and moved on to her provocative song “Wood.”

“I thought, “I wanted to bring this to the studio and do a song that sounds like a long-awaited, timeless sound,” she said of the song, which blushed listeners and clenched the pearls. “It really started in a nonsense place. I don’t know what happened, hey, once we got in there, we started the vibe and I don’t know.”

Swift and Fallon have been sharing memorable late-night moments for over a decade.

Early appearances

On October 6th, this will be his seventh appearance on “The Tonight Show Sterling Jimmy Fallon.” Swift has been drinking coffee on the late-night show since August 13, 2014, when she told Fallon that 24-year-old Swift would be appearing at the MTV Video Music Awards. He pressed her to reveal more about the next project she was teasing, the fifth album, 1989, but she remained silent. Swift also appeared in Fallon’s comedy “Ew,” where he played a teenager with braces spelling his name Sarah. Swift had her hair tied up in colorful scrunchies and wore a scramble letter necklace with the character’s name Natalie.

“This is a Pegacorn picture I drew. It’s a unicorn and a Pegasus, and this is the invention of the picture I drew,” Swift said, showing off his glittering mythical creatures.

When he returned in February 2015, Fallon told Swift and himself, gestured and hand-gestured that he “feels this bond.” Fallon held up the cover of Vogue, posing with model Carly Cross, Fallon explained how the two women played a game in which they painted each other’s faces without looking down at Vogue.com. He asked Swift if he could make a version of himself.

In the interview, Fallon also performed a bit of dancing with Swift and Jumbotron in New York City. In the skit, the camera captures fans dancing during the match, showing the two of them throwing out their popcorn, acting robots, and posing back to back.

Two years later, Swift returned to his “Reputation” era, performing an acoustic piano version of Fallon’s favorite album, “New Years Day.”

In the opening monologue on November 13th, 2017, Fallon admitted that her mother, Gloria Fallon, had held her and her sister’s hand three times, “I love you.” Swift performed an acoustic version of his song, which brought tears to tears.

“My heart is alive”

On October 3, 2019, Swift’s mother Andrea Swift sent Fallon footage of Swift recovering from laser eye surgery. He became groggy and the singer nearly cried as he grabbed a banana and tried to eat it. The video switches to her lying on the bed and chewing a banana. The mother warns, “Please don’t eat this and sleep.”

Swift replied cheerfully, “I’m not sleeping, my heart is alive.”

Fast forward to November 11, 2021, Swift teased the release of “Red (Taylor’s Version)” and explained the Easter Egg process (and he set up clues for the “Tortured Poets Division” three years ago), confronted them in a round of “Box of Lies” and tried to sabotage each other about strange items hidden within the mystery box.

Her sixth appearance was on October 24th, 2022. Swift wore a black and white three-piece suit with Dorothy Schumacher’s chevron print. She announced that she would soon be on a tour (later the Elas Tour), discussing “All To Well (10 Minute Version),” the music video, which became a short film, and previewed the “Vijeweled” music video.

Google’s new AI agent rewrites code to automate vulnerability fixes

0

Google DeepMind has introduced a new AI agent designed to autonomously detect and fix critical security vulnerabilities in software code. The aptly named CodeMender has already provided 72 security fixes to established open source projects over the past six months.

Identifying and patching vulnerabilities is known to be a very difficult and time-consuming process, even using traditional automated methods such as fuzzing. Google DeepMind’s own research, including AI-based projects such as Big Sleep and OSS-Fuzz, has proven effective at discovering new zero-day vulnerabilities in well-audited code. However, this success creates new bottlenecks. As AI accelerates flaw detection, the burden on human developers to fix flaws increases.

CodeMender is designed to address this imbalance. It acts as an autonomous AI agent that takes a comprehensive approach to fixing code security. Its features both reactive features that allow you to instantly patch newly discovered vulnerabilities, and proactive features that allow you to rewrite existing code to eliminate an entire class of security flaws before they are exploited. This allows human developers and project managers to spend more time building features and improving software features.

The system works by leveraging the advanced inference capabilities of Google’s recent Gemini Deep Think model. This foundation allows agents to debug and solve complex security issues with high degree of autonomy. To achieve this, the system is equipped with a set of tools that allow you to analyze and infer the code before implementing changes. CodeMender also includes a validation process to ensure that the changes are correct and no new issues known as regression.

Large language models are rapidly advancing, but making mistakes in the security of your code can lead to significant damage. Therefore, the CodeMender automatic verification framework is essential. Systematically check that the proposed changes fix the root cause of the problem, are functionally correct, do not disrupt existing tests, and comply with the project’s coding style guidelines. Only high-quality patches that meet these strict standards will be published for human reviews.

To increase the effectiveness of code modifications, the DeepMind team has developed new technology for AI agents. CodeMender employs advanced programmatic analysis using a range of tools, including static and dynamic analysis, differential testing, fuzzing, and SMT solvers. These tools allow you to systematically scrutinize code patterns, control flows, and data flows to identify the underlying causes of security flaws and architectural weaknesses.

The system also uses a multi-agent architecture, with specialized agents deployed to address specific aspects of the issue. For example, using a dedicated large-scale language model-based critique tool reveals the difference between the original code and the modified code. This allows the primary agent to ensure that the proposed changes do not cause unintended side effects and self-correct their approach if necessary.

In one practical example, CodeMender addressed an vulnerability in which crash reports indicate heap buffer overflow. The final patch only required a few lines of code changes, but the root cause was not immediately clear. Using the debugger and code search tool, the agent determined that the real problem was a stack management issue for Extensible Markup Language (XML) elements that are being parsed elsewhere in the codebase. In another case, the agent devised a critical patch for complex object lifetime issues and modified the custom system for generating C code within the target project.

CodeMender is designed to not only address existing bugs, but also proactively enhance your software against future threats. The team deployed an agent to apply -fbounds-safety Annotations to some of the widely used image compression library libwebp. These annotations tell the compiler to add bounds checking to the code. This prevents attackers from exploiting buffer overflows to execute arbitrary code.

This effort is particularly relevant given that the libwebp heap buffer overflow vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-4863 was used by threat actors in zero-click iOS exploits a few years ago. DeepMind points out that if these annotations were properly placed, that particular vulnerability would have been unexploitable along with most other buffer overflows in the annotated section.

Proactive code modification by AI agents involves sophisticated decision-making processes. Applying annotations allows you to automatically fix new compilation errors and automatically fix test failures caused by your own changes. If the validator detects that a change has corrupted the feature, the agent will self-correct based on the feedback and try another solution.

Despite these promising early results, Google DeepMind adopts a deliberate and planned deployment approach, focusing on reliability. Currently, all patches generated by CodeMender are reviewed by human researchers before being submitted to an open source project. The team is gradually increasing the number of posts to ensure high quality and systematically incorporate feedback from the open source community.

Looking ahead, researchers will provide CodeMender-generated patches to maintainers of important open source projects. By repeating community feedback, we hope to ultimately release CodeMender as a tool that is generally available to all software developers.

The DeepMind team will be publishing technical papers and reports in the coming months to share their techniques and results. This research will be the first step in exploring the possibilities of AI agents that proactively modify the code and fundamentally enhance software security for everyone.

Can you be fired for political statements or beliefs?

Do you have a question? Please send it here.

question: recently, I’ve heard stories about people who encourage businesses to fire employees for comment on social media and on the workplace political topic. Someone anonymously reported one of my friends to her company about what she said about Charlie Kirk’s shooting. Can businesses fire people for political statements and beliefs? – Earrings

Answer: 1) Employees are free to hold and share political beliefs, 2) Employers have the right not to hire workers and to fire workers, especially in a state of “will” when those beliefs and their way of expression disrupt the workplace.

The reality is that most companies do not make such decisions based on what their employees believe, but they are based on how their actions are reflected in the organization and affect others. That’s not about having an opinion. It’s about treating colleagues with respect and contributing to a cohesive, productive environment.

Workplace courtesy is important. Apathy costs more than $2 billion each day employers due to loss of productivity, turnover and absence. From a business perspective, it’s much easier to let go of one destructive employee than constantly mediating a conflict.

The workplace does not need to reflect the departments that appear on social media or cable news. Employers have both the right and the responsibility to protect a respectful civic culture. Therefore, while firing workers solely for statements or beliefs may be myopic, businesses can take action when their employees’ actions erode trust, respect, or cooperation. Courtesy is more than just manners – it’s good business.

Tennessee What you need to know about the October 7th Primary Election

0

A dozen people are running for the Tennessee Primary Special Election on October 7th, including President Trump’s nominee, Matt Van Epps.

play

WASHINGTON – A dozen candidates are running in the Tennessee special election primary on October 7th to fill the vacant U.S. House seat by former Republican Rep. Mark Green, who resigned from Congress in July.

Republican and Democrat voters from Davidson, Williamson, parts of Montgomery and 11 other counties are heading to the polling station to select a replacement for the 7th House district in the Nashville area. Green, who was considered a safe seat for the Republican Party, was re-electioned in November last year with nearly 60% of the vote, making it his fourth term.

President Donald Trump supported Matt Van Epps in the busy Republican primary last week, calling former state officials “MAGA warriors.” Those who win the Republican and Democrat primary will advance to the general election on December 2nd.

The poll is expected to close at 7pm Central Time on October 7th, according to the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website.

Tennessee election winners are crucial to the ability of Republicans and House Speaker Mike Johnson to lead Congress. Republicans currently hold a close majority in the House of Representatives, 219-214. Assuming that all Democrats are opposed, as all lawmakers are present, Johnson is only allowed to lose two Republican votes on any bill at this time.

Here’s what you need to know about the Primary Special Election:

Who is running for the Tennessee Special Election primary?

Nine Republicans are running for the special primary election after Tennessee Rep. Lee Reeves and businessman Stuart Cooper canceled campaigns last week following Trump’s support for Van Epps.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee appointed Van Epps as state general services director late last year. He previously served as the top coronavirus control coronavirus in Tennessee.

Van Epps has campaigned mainly on serving as a US Army helicopter combat pilot and supporting Trump. Local veterans filed a complaint with the Tennessee National Guard against Van Epps, alleging that military uniforms were inappropriately used in election ads in violation of Department of Defense rules.

Other Republicans running for the race include Tennessee Rep. Jody Barrett, state Rep. Gino Barso, former high school teacher and veteran Adolf Agbeko Duggan, Mason Foley, Montgomery County Commissioner Jason Knight, retired Marine Joe Lures and former state Senate investigation analyst Torres Whittam.

On the Democrats, Tennessee Rep. Aftin Alyssa Bain, state Rep. Vincent Dixie, businessman Darden Copeland and state Rep. Beau Mitchell are running for the party’s nominations for the general election, where the seats are contested.

The Maine investigation claims that 250 votes were found in Amazon order

0

play

Maine officials are investigating allegations that hundreds of blank votes were delivered to women in this November election as part of the Amazon order.

Officials from Ellsworth, a coastal Maine city, reported last week that 250 absentee ballots have disappeared from the state on delivery, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said at an Oct. 6 press conference. On the same day, an unknown woman from Newburgh, a small town about 41 miles northwest of Ellsworth, claimed she had found an unmarked vote bundled in an Amazon package.

“Suspicious events” are being investigated by the Secretary of State’s Law Enforcement Department, along with partners in federal law enforcement agencies, including the Maine Attorney General’s Office, Maine Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Service. According to Bellows. She refused to provide specific details about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

Bellows emphasized that the incident would not affect the November 4th election. October 6th was the first day of in-person absentee voting in the state for the election.

“Even if the most enterprising criminals could produce Maine ballots and Maine absentee ballot envelopes, or if their custody was broken, elections would be free, safe, safe and protected for checks and balances on absentee ballots,” Bellows said at a press conference.

Maine authorities are working with the US Postal Service

According to Bellows, the majority of the state’s communities receive absentee ballot shipments. She said the four small towns have not yet received a vote, but the town has no opening hours until the second half of the week.

Bellows said state officials are working closely with the US postal service to ensure that these four packages arrive on time. She added that the election process is safe and secure and that law enforcement will find the person responsible for missing voting cases.

“Our elections, and in fact, our democracy, are always under attack in new and different ways,” Bellows said. “It appears that there have been attempts this year to suspend the distribution of votes and voting materials, but they are stronger and better than those who are trying to harm the election.

The Voter Interference Case has made national headlines in recent years after the past three presidential elections were caught up in accusations of interference. Several cases, including allegations of interference and other voting issues, were reported in the weeks leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

Report: Woman’s Amazon packages appeared tampered

Bellows said it directed the Secretary of State’s law enforcement department to investigate the case after it was reported that 250 absentee ballots had been delivered to an unknown woman on an Amazon package. The alleged case “evidently outside of proper custody,” Bellows said.

She held a short timeline of the event during the press conference, saying that the city of Ellsworth received a predicted shipment of two boxes of absentee ballots on September 30.

The Ellsworth office of the clerk’s office has since notified the state’s election division of the lack of votes, she said. The election department has launched an investigation and contacted partners, including printers and licensed carriers.

On the same day, Bellows said from a conservative blog that a Newburgh woman was allegedly receiving five packets of state absentee ballots on an Amazon box. State officials contacted female lawmakers and conservative bloggers.

“But no one in Newburgh contacted the Secretary of State’s election department or law enforcement on Tuesday,” Bellows said.

Mainwire reported that the woman was expecting delivery of rice, paper plates and toy lightsabers, but instead found a vote in the Amazon package. According to the main wire, the package appeared to be tampered as it had already been retaped when it was opened and arrived.

Tropical storms can form in the Atlantic Ocean. where are you heading?

0

The Hurricane Center is tracking a tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean that could become the next named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

play

A large area of widespread pressure over the Atlantic Ocean could result in the next named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season in the coming days.

A tropical wave, labeled Invest 95L (AL95), has an 80% chance for the next 48 hours and a 90% chance for the next seven days, the National Hurricane Center said in an evening advisory Oct. 6.

The hurricane center appears to be conducive to environmental conditions to form within the “next day or so.” “This system is expected to be near or north of the Northern Leeward Islands on Thursday and Friday, and interests there should monitor its progress.”

The second potential system is to produce large areas of turbulent showers and thunderstorms over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. It is expected to move over the Yucatan Peninsula and over the Bay of Campeche on Tuesday, according to the hurricane center.

Some late developments are possible around midweek, but the center only lists a 10% chance. However, regardless of the development, areas of disturbed weather are expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, and southern Mexico this week.

atlantic storm tracker

This forecast track shows the most likely path of the storm center. The full width of the storm or its impact is not shown, and the storm center can spend up to 33% of the time moving outside the cone.

Hurricane Priscilla, Tropical Storm Octave continues to rotate in the Pacific Ocean

Meanwhile, in the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Priscilla appears to be a threat to parts of southwestern Mexico, while Tropical Storm Octave weakens toward the east.

Hurricane Center forecasters said in an Oct. 6 advisory that Priscilla continues to strengthen, with heavy rain and gusty winds forecast for parts of southwestern Mexico on Monday.

Priscilla is located approximately 430 miles southeast of the southern tip of Baja, California, with maximum sustained winds near 85 and high wind gusts. Forecasters said additional strengthening is predicted, and Priscilla could approach major hurricane status in the coming days before weakening by midweek.

Priscilla is expected to bring heavy rain to coastal parts of Michoacán and western Guerrero, with amounts of 2 to 4 inches expected. One to three inches of rain is expected in Colima, west Jalisco, and the rest of Guerrero along the coast. The rain poses a risk of flash flooding, the Hurricane Center said.

Get ready for a hurricane now

Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it’s too late. “Obtain disaster supplies while shelves are still stocked and get inspections for flood insurance early, as it requires a 30-day waiting period,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends.

  • Develop an evacuation plan. If you are at risk from a hurricane, you need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to plan where you are going and how you will get there.
  • assemble disaster supplies. Whether you’re sheltering in place or sheltering in place, you’ll need supplies not only to get through the storm, but also likely for the long aftermath, NOAA said.
  • Get insurance inspected and document your possessions. Contact your insurance company or agent today to request an insurance inspection to ensure you have sufficient coverage to repair or replace your home and belongings. Remember that home and renters insurance does not cover floods, so you need separate insurance for those. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • Create a family communication plan. NOAA says you should take time now to write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family. Determine where your family will gather and be sure to include out-of-town locations in case of evacuation.
  • strengthen your home. Now is the time to improve your home’s ability to withstand hurricanes. Trim trees, install storm shutters, accordion shutters, impact glass, and seal the outside of wall openings.

Stellantis Posts Sales Growth and Revitalizes EV Tax Credit until 2025

0

play

  • Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat, recorded its first sales profit since the second quarter of 2023.
  • The Chrysler and Jeep brands recorded double-digit profits.
  • Post by Dodge, Ram, Fiat and Alfa Romeo, the company noted that there is a positive trend in the Dodge and Ram lineup.

Stellantis’ US sales rose 6% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period as the brand sold 324,825 vehicles. To maintain momentum, the company announced that it will undertake the current electric vehicle tax credit costs by the end of the year while supplies last.

The rise in Stellantis sales is in contrast to the company’s performance in recent memory. The last quarter saw a 10% decline in sales compared to the same period in 2024. Sales for the first quarter of this year fell 12% from the same period last year. That followed an overall decline in 2024, 15% year-on-year.

Despite tumultuous 12 months, tariff unrest and an expired electric vehicle tax credit marked, this has led to a massive rush for buyers to win cash on EVs, but Stellantis’ sales report is good news for international carmakers.

Company officials told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA Today network. The offer will continue with the currently issued IRS tax refunds for EV sales, following similar moves from competitors Ford Motor and General Motors. Unlike Ford and GM, which offer credits by making preemptive down payments on vehicles, Stellantis offers $7,500 in credit through bonus cash incentives from existing dealer inventory.

According to the numbers, Jeep and Chrysler recorded double-digit sales growth compared to the third quarter of 2025, but RAM suffered a small loss overall. The Dodge has also declined, but the popular Durango, which increased the performance of its third quarter model by 44%, comes standard with the popular Durango.

According to company data, here are how the brands performed in sales compared to the third quarter of 2024:

  • Jeep has increased by 11%.
  • RAM has been reduced by 5%.
  • Chrysler has increased by 45%.
  • Dodges fell by 2%.
  • Fiat has increased by 2% (which represents the difference from 316 units in the third quarter of 2024 compared to 321 in the second quarter of 2025).
  • Alfa Romeo has dropped by 21%.
  • Stellantis did not report any data on its luxurious product, Maserati.

Lose the streak

Stellantis’s 6% increase in the third quarter marks the company’s first positive sales quarter in nearly two years. Since May, when Stellantis hired new CEO Antonio Filosa, the brand has been campaigning to stimulate its reputation and position in the American market.

Filosa, an Italian with over 20 years of experience with the Stellantis family of automakers, has replaced former Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares.

Under new leadership, Filosa often shows her intention to inspire the company’s US division.

Stellantis ended up losing Skid, but the company sold less than three Detroit competitors, GM and Ford, both reported profits.

GM and Ford reported sales on Wednesday, October 1, with GM boasting an 8% increase compared to the third quarter of 2024, and Ford’s sales also rose by about 8% in the same period last year.

GM set a company record for EV sales and cashed in with the last two seconds push for buyers to buy the EV before the $7,500 tax credit expired on Tuesday, September 30th.

How your senator voted to end it as government shutdowns continue

0

The latest US Senate vote has passed a suspension funds bill to end partial federal shutdowns. This failed as expected on October 6th. This means that the shutdown on the sixth day will continue.

The Senate did not pass a duel bill written by Republicans and Democrats. The Republican support measures to restore government funding until November 21st were defeated in a 52-42 vote. I needed 60 votes to pass. Democrat proposals lost in a 50-45 vote.

In the first four attempts, only 55 senators voted in favor of the bill. That voting destruction is unlikely to change. USA Today has not yet had any additional Democrats say they support the measure since their last vote.

White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt told reporters he threatened to threaten a layoff from the shutdown but has not kept looming.

Leavitt said the Office of Management and Budget is reviewing layoff plans with federal agencies. When asked whether the layoff would follow the vote of another senator on October 6th, Levitt refused to say when the layoff would begin.

“We don’t want to see people fired,” Leavitt said. “Layoffs will result in unfortunate results” of the shutdown.

How the Senate voted to expand funding, shutdowns closed

The closure began on October 1, the start of fiscal year 2026, after Senate Republicans failed to win sufficient democratic support in short-term funding measures that kept federal agencies open until November 21.

Democrats are calling for a permanent extension of the enhanced premium tax credit to help Americans purchase private health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. They also want written assurances that the White House will not unilaterally cancel any agreed spending in any transaction.

Republicans say they hope that the government is funded at the current level and that policy issues, including healthcare, should be considered separately.

How did the senator vote?

Approximately 750,000 federal employees, from national park workers to financial regulators, could flee under the closure, according to the Non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. USA Today reports that approximately $400 million in compensation could be withheld daily.

Open five new restaurant locations in these states in-n-out

Five new golden arrows are set to rise immediately.

In-N-Out continues to expand. Because the company lists five locations in three states as “soon open.” The three locations are in Tennessee, where the company opens its second headquarters.

Once praised by late food authorities Anthony Brudain, the double-double home has continued to expand beyond its California roots in recent years, opening locations in Colorado, Texas and Idaho.

The company previously announced its intention to open a store in New Mexico by 2027.

This is where IN-N-Out will open a new location.

It’ll open soon

The In-N-Out website lists five locations as “soon open,” but the company did not respond to USA Today due to a more clear time frame. These new restaurants are set to open at the following addresses:

  • Sylmer, California: 13864 Foothill Blvd.
  • Longmont, Colorado: 255 Ken Pratt Blvd.
  • Antioch, Tennessee: 4130 William Turner Pkwy.
  • Lebanon, Tennessee: 915 South Hartman Drive
  • Murfreesboro, Tennessee: 2508 Medical Center PKWY.

Snyder downplays East Coast expansion

In-N-Out CEO Lynsi Snyder pointed out logistical difficulties, further reducing the possibility of an East Coast expansion when he appeared on the “Related” podcast on July 18th.

“We can get to Tennessee from a warehouse in Texas. We have a warehouse, but we don’t do our own meat there, so we can deliver it from Texas,” Snyder said.

“Florida begged us, but we’re still saying no,” Snyder said. “East Coast states, we’re still saying no.”

The company operates most of its California locations, and Snyder added that most of the company’s stores are still in California.

However, on the same podcast, she aired her complaints about the Golden State, gravitationally about the implementation of rules surrounding the California Covid-19 pandemic, and in 2021 state health officials closed two restaurants to not check vaccine status.

“There are a lot of great things in California,” Snyder said. “But raising a family here isn’t easy. It’s not easy to do business here.”

She later relaxed her stance in a statement provided by the company to USA Today, appearing to have posted it on her Instagram page on July 22nd.

“I’m extremely proud of where In-n-out started. Anyone who knows me knows how often we talk about our beginnings and how our customers here in California have brought us where we are today.”

Adding Tennessee HQ, but not leaving California

IN-N-OUT has announced that many of California’s corporate employees will be relocating from Irvine, Orange County to their offices at Baldwin Park in the Los Angeles area.

It is set to be completed by the end of 2029, a mile from the first restaurant opened by Harry and Esthersnyder.

The company said after the Irvine offices close, employees at the company will be located either in the Baldwin Park office or in the Tennessee office. The Nashville area office is scheduled to open in 2026, the company said at the time.

President Trump said he would consider invoking a rebellion law and sending troops to cities if the court halts the deployment of the National Guard.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he would consider invoking a rebellion law and sending troops to cities if the court halts the deployment of the National Guard.

“We’ll do that if we need it. So far it’s not necessary. But there’s a reason why we have a rebellion law. If we have to, we’ll do that.”

The rebellion law, which has been invoked only 30 times in American history, gives the president the authority to send US troops to suppress rebellions and civil wars if federal law is obstructed.

President Trump’s remarks come amid the deployment of federal forces aimed at protecting federal buildings and cracking down on crime has stumbled in court, bringing new legal challenges from Democrats.

“If people were killed, and the courts were to detain us, or the governor or mayor were to detain us, I would certainly do that.” “We want to make sure people are not killed. We have to make sure our city is safe.”

On October 5, a federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked the Trump administration from sending National Guard to Portland, Oregon, where the Trump administration was trying to put troops into defense of immigration and customs enforcement facilities. The judge’s decision left hundreds of California National Guard members dispatched to Portland with nowhere to go.

White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told reporters that the administration is “utilising every option available” while appealing the judge’s ruling.

In another legal battle, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democratic governor, sued the Trump administration on October 6 to stop the deployment of National Guard into Chicago city.

“There’s a big problem with Portland. I’ll tell you what’s wrong. That’s a crime,” Trump said. “There’s a big problem in Chicago. It’s called crime. And we want to wipe out crime, but they want to fuel it.”

Patriotic makeovers are underway at all Steak ‘n Shake restaurants.

The Indianapolis-based burger chain made the announcement on Saturday, Oct. 4, to “proudly support American values and traditions.”

“Every Steak ‘n Shake has earned the tallest and largest American flag allowed by local governments!” the fast food chain wrote on social media platform X.

Shortly after Steak ‘N Shake announced its decision, SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk rang in support of the restaurant chain in a post on social media platforms.

He wrote, “I’m ordering from there tomorrow!”

While some shared the enthusiasm for masks, others criticized the decision. One user commented, “What are American values and traditions? Fast food, beef, obesity?”

Steak ‘N Shake confirmed the flag plans in a statement to USA Today on Monday, October 6th.

Steak ‘n Shake, Beef Tallow, Cracker Barrel

Steak ‘n Shake made headlines earlier this year when it announced plans to cook its fries with beef. “I rfk’d the fries,” Steak n’ Shake Coudin Edwards told “Fox & Friends” in a February interview.

In August, the burger chain criticized Cracker Barrel’s decision to give its logo a facelift. It’s a decision that was ultimately reversed after a wave of public outcry, including from President Donald Trump.

“Legacy is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and the CEO wants to scrape it all away. At Steak ‘n Shake, we take pride in our history, family, and American values.”

“All are welcome,” the social media post added. “We will never sell ourselves away from the past in a cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers.”
