Is the federal government still closed? What you need to know on Thursday

0

play

The partial federal government shutdown entered its ninth day on Thursday, October 9, after Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on a budget to restore government funding and end the shutdown that began on October 1.

But the real-world effects of the government shutdown, especially on federal workers who are being furloughed or put on unpaid work due to budget constraints, could put pressure on lawmakers to reach a deal.

The Internal Revenue Service said in a statement Wednesday that the government shutdown sent more than 34,000 employees home, nearly half of its workforce, and effectively closed its taxpayer call center.

For workers who need to continue working but haven’t received a paycheck during the shutdown, the economic reality will be felt on October 10, when many government workers are scheduled to have their paychecks deposited into their bank accounts. The checks will be smaller than usual because they cover work done between September 22 and October 4, including the first three days of the shutdown, Reuters reported.

The nation’s 2 million active-duty soldiers are scheduled to receive paychecks next Wednesday, October 15th, for service performed after October 1st. If the shutdown is still in effect at that point, they will not receive any pay at all.

Here’s what you need to know as the federal government shutdown enters its ninth day.

Is the federal government still closed?

Yes, the federal government is still largely shut down.

Approximately 2 million federal employees have had their paychecks suspended, and nearly 750,000 have been ordered not to report to work. Other employees, including military and air traffic control personnel, must work without pay until a budget deal is reached.

What about Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid?

According to the Social Security Administration’s closure plan, the agency will continue to provide retirement and disability benefits, but will furlough 12% of its employees and suspend marketing campaigns.

Payments will continue under the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs as well.

Will U.S. mail be delivered?

The USPS said in a statement that there is no impact because the U.S. Postal Service does not rely on funding from Congress. Post offices will be open.

What about the airport?

More than 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration employees will still be required to report to work during the shutdown. Air traffic controllers will receive a portion of their pay on October 14 for the work they did before the shutdown, Reuters reported.

Will food assistance continue under SNAP and WIC?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nation’s largest food assistance program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC, will continue operating during the closure as funding allows, according to closure planning documents issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

What does the military shutdown mean for the military?

Two million active-duty military members will continue to serve without pay until the budget impasse is resolved.

Roughly 55% of the Pentagon’s 740,000 civilian employees have been furloughed, including those in training, procurement and administrative support. Civilians are still working in cybersecurity, medical care, weapons system maintenance, intelligence, and logistics.

The National Guard, which President Trump deployed to American cities, must also remain active.

What about Homeland Security, Immigration and Border Protection officers?

Only 5% of the Department of Homeland Security’s 271,000 employees are furloughed, including those involved in research, planning, training and auditing.

Secret Service agents, immigration and border officials, airport security screeners, Coast Guard personnel and Federal Emergency Management Agency emergency personnel remain on the job.

The shutdown is the 15th since 1981 and is expected to be the fourth longest in U.S. history, surpassing the eight-day shutdown in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter. The longest shutdown lasted 35 days during President Trump’s first term in 2018-2019.

Phillies defeat Dodgers in Game 3 and play one more day in MLB playoffs

0

play

LOS ANGELES — The Philadelphia Phillies tried to tell everyone not to panic.

No one believed it.

They kept saying that maybe a change of scenery to Dodger Stadium would be relaxing.

No one believed it.

They claimed a strong trio of All-Star hitters would break out.

No one believed it.

When the Philadelphia Phillies lined the field at Dodger Stadium for handshakes and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-2 on Wednesday night in front of a sold-out, stunned crowd of 53,689, they suddenly gained a large following.

Of course, the Phillies are still in trouble, trailing the Dodgers 2-1 in the best-of-five National League Division Series, with Game 4 scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 9, at Dodger Stadium.

Yet they are alive.

And they have a dynamic that the Dodgers really wanted to prevent.

Momentum.

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy said before the game, “You don’t always know if momentum is real or not.” “Having said that, as a player in certain situations you can certainly feel the momentum shift.

“Obviously we want to finish this tonight and we don’t want anything to take away from us. It’s one of those things when you talk about momentum, if we don’t finish it tonight it feels like it’s going to slip away. That’s the last thing you want to happen.”

Well, it happened.

“We want to keep them out. We don’t want to let them go for some air,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game.

Now, after what happened on Wednesday, the Phillies suddenly feel confident.

The Phillies, who lost their first two games in front of their home crowd at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and spent the season on life support, believe they can pull this off.

In the end, they became the first team in two weeks to defeat the defending World Series champions, ending the Dodgers’ winning streak at nine.

Ranger Suarez was great, pitching five innings in relief of Aaron Nola in the third inning, but he reminded everyone what the Phillies’ strong trio can do against opponents.

Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Trea Turner put on a power-hitting clinic for everyone to watch, despite failing 2-of-21 in the game.

Schwarber hit two home runs, including a 455-foot blast in the fourth inning, and had three RBIs.

Turner had three hits and two RBIs, scoring five runs in the Phillies’ eighth to break the game.

There was Harper, who got on base three times with two hits.

The Phillies looked good, just like that…Phillies.

Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who entered this game with an ERA of 0.66 in his past six starts, was made unable to be rescued from the fifth inning.

It all started when Schwarber, hitless in his past 22 at-bats, came to bat at the top of the fourth inning. With one majestic swing of the bat, his slump ended.

Schwarber sent Yamamoto’s fastball out of bounds, landing 455 feet into the right field pavilion. It was hit so far and so hard (117 mph) that Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez didn’t move.

At that exact moment, the Phillies batter woke up.

Harper, who was also handcuffed in this series, followed with a single into the left field seats. Bison Stott singled and as Harper headed to third base, center fielder Andy Pages tried to catch him. Instead, the ball bounced past third baseman Max Muncy and into the Dodgers’ dugout, scoring Harper and allowing Stott to advance to third base. Brandon Marsh made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Yamamoto appeared in the fifth, but was quickly met with singles by Bryson Stott and Torrie Turner, and was ejected from the game. It was the shortest trip since June 1st.

With the second steal, the Phillies had a great chance to take the lead against left-handed relief pitcher Anthony Banda. Still, Schwarber struck out. Harper hit a shallow pop-up into the right field seats. Then, after Boehm intentionally gave up a walk to load the bases, Brandon Marsh struck out on three pitches. Well, technically there are two lawsuits. Marsh will be charged with an automatic strike for pitch clock violation.

In the seventh inning, three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw appeared in relief, and the Phillies threatened again with Turner’s leadoff single and Schwarber’s walk. But Harper flied out to right, Schwarber went too far and was picked off from first base, and the chance ended with Brandon Marsh’s line drive to right.

Finally, they broke through in the eighth inning with a home run by JT Realmuto, a two-run homer by Turner, and a two-run homer by Schwarber.

Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts vividly remembers what it felt like to struggle in the postseason before ending his slump last year, so who knows what will happen now?

“I’ve been there…” Betts said. “When you get stuck in that rut, it’s like quicksand. No matter what you do, you can’t get out of it. It’s hard. Hell, I couldn’t get out of it. So I don’t have any advice or anything. I mean, shoot, if I knew what to do I would do it.”

“I wish them luck. Let’s see if they have an answer.”

For one night, they certainly did.

The schedule for Wednesday’s game is as follows:

Clayton Kershaw returned in the second inning and allowed a home run to JT Realmuto. He then gave up a walk to Max Kepler, and after Nick Castellanos reached on an error, Bryson Stott bunted to second and third base. With one out, Trea Turner hit a two-RBI single to put the Phillies up 6-1. Kyle Schwarber then hit his second two-run shot of the game, increasing Philadelphia’s lead to 8-1.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, Dave Roberts brought Clayton Kershaw out of the bullpen for his first appearance in the 2025 postseason. Kershaw faced the Phillies’ best hitters, giving up a walk to Kyle Schwarber and then allowing a leadoff single to Trey Turner. The veteran left-hander allowed Bryce Harper to fly out, then Schwarber got two outs on a baserunning error.

After giving up an intentional walk to Alec Bohm, Kershaw hit a hard line drive to right to retire Brandon Marsh and end the inning without allowing a run.

Kershaw, who will retire at the end of the season, has won three Cy Young Awards, one MVP Award and is a surefire candidate for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Anthony Banda (fifth inning) and Jack Dryer (sixth inning) relieved Yoshinobu Yamamoto and managed to prevent the Phillies from scoring an extra run, even though Philadelphia had the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Kyle Schwarber’s big home run in the top of the 4th inning took the lead and tied the game. The next batter, Bryce Harper, singled and then scored as a result of Andy Pages’ throwing error on Alec Bohm’s single. The ball went out, Boehm advanced to third base, and Brandon Marsh brought Boehm home on a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning. JT Realmuto hit a double, but Yamamoto singled out Max Kepler and Nick Castellanos to score and the Phillies took a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the 4th inning, Kyle Schwarber hit a 455-foot home run off Yoshinobu Yamamoto to tie the game.

The Phillies slugger led the National League with 56 home runs during the regular season, but was 0-for-23 at bat.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson stuck to his plan to limit Aaron Nola’s exposure, pulling right-hander Nola after two innings and bringing in southpaw Ranger Suarez.

On Suarez’s first pitch of the night, switch hitter Tommy Edman hit a solo home run into the left field seats, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead heading into the third inning.

Meanwhile, Yoshinobu Yamamoto held the Phillies hitless through three innings.

In the top of the first inning, with one out, Mookie Betts hit a triple, but Aaron Nola rebounded it and struck out Teoscar Hernandez. The Phillies’ veteran right-hander hit Freddie Freeman with a breaking ball, but struck out Will Smith, who was trying to get through the inning unscathed.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto successfully avoided Bryce Harper’s two-out walk to lead off a scoreless game at Dodger Stadium.

In his second year of a $325 million contract before pitching in the MLB, the Japanese right-hander became the Dodgers’ ace this season, earning All-Star selection and a 2.49 ERA.

The Dodgers’ All-Star catcher made his first start in Game 3 of this postseason and came off the bench for the first two games of the series. Smith had been sidelined for nearly a month with a broken hand.

“His at-bat was great, especially considering the arm he had to face both in that game and in the sack,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Game 3.

“If I didn’t feel like he could finish games, I wouldn’t have started him. He feels good. He’s in a good spot. I thought the quality of his at-bats was great.”

What is the cheapest price for a new Mercedes-Benz car in 2025?

You can buy a brand new Mercedes Benz for less than the average new car price.

play

  • Mercedes-Benz produces several competitive cars and SUVs that compete with the best vehicles in their respective segments.
  • By 2025, a single Mercedes-Benz car will be more affordable than the average car.

Can you buy a new Mercedes-Benz for less than the average new car price?

According to the personal finance site MoneyGeek.com, the average price of a new car is about $48,841. Mercedes-Benz isn’t known for its affordable prices, but some new cars and SUVs sell for less than the average new car price in 2025.

A luxury small Mercedes-Benz car is surprisingly affordable compared to current new cars. Is it worth considering, and how does it compare to its main rivals in its segment?

2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA starts under $43,000

The Mercedes-Benz 2026 CLA 250 Coupe has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $42,750. Equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with mild hybrid drive as standard. This powertrain makes small cars slightly more efficient compared to typical gasoline engines.

The CLA 250 Coupe produces 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It gets 31 miles per gallon combined. The Mercedes-Benz CLA has a fuel tank capacity of 13.5 gallons. The range on a full tank of gas is approximately 418 miles, which is a decent range for this segment.

Standard equipment for Mercedes-Benz CLA

From technology to comfort, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA includes a number of standard features that make it a great value for your money.

2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Standard Equipment

  • MB-Tex upholstery
  • heated power side mirrors
  • illumination entry system
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia display and digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

Mercedes’ most affordable car for 2025 also has several standard safety features, including active brake assist, blind spot assist, and an advanced tire pressure monitoring system. It includes luxury touches not standard on most mainstream vehicles, such as MB-Tex upholstery and heated power side mirrors.

This luxury car also comes standard with a large 10.3-inch infotainment screen. How does the new CLA Coupe differ from other luxury coupes in its segment?

2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA vs. Rivals

Key competitors for the Mercedes-Benz CLA include the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, Audi A3, and Cadillac CT4. Mercedes’ affordable coupe outperforms many rivals in style, standard technology, and ride comfort.

The Audi A3 may be the best overall affordable luxury car, as it combines engaging driving dynamics with a luxurious interior. The sedan body style makes it easier to accommodate multiple passengers, making it more practical.

The Cadillac CT4 handles well and is a great choice for driving enthusiasts who value driving experience over comfort. BMW’s 2 Series Gran Coupe is a solid choice for anyone interested in an entry-level BMW that represents the spirit of the brand without breaking the bank.

Should you buy the most affordable Mercedes-Benz car in 2025?

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA comes with many attractive features and decent performance specs, but it’s not the undisputed best model in its segment. The 2026 BMW 228 Gran Coupe is a more affordable German luxury car ($39,600). Additionally, BMW’s luxury car is slightly more powerful than the CLA and has better driving dynamics.

If you’re looking for an entry-level Mercedes vehicle with great features and a refined cabin, the CLA is a solid choice. If you want the best affordable luxury coupe on the market in 2025, you could instead enjoy the CLA’s BMW rival, the 228 Gran Coupe.

Blue Jays advance to ALCS after sluggish Yankees season: Highlights

0

play

NEW YORK — In Game 4 of the American League Division Series, Nathan Rooks hit a two-out double in the seventh inning, and Luis Berland and seven Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers allowed just six hits to shut out the New York Yankees, winning 5-2 and advancing to their first ALCS since 2016.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven ALCS is scheduled for Sunday at Rogers Center in Toronto, with the Blue Jays facing either the Seattle Mariners or the Detroit Tigers. The series is tied at 2, and the deciding game will be played Friday in Seattle.

After using eight pitchers in the 9-6 Game 3 loss, Blue Jays manager John Schneider assembled his staff and told his team to be flexible and ready at a moment’s notice. In Game 4, none of Toronto’s eight hurlers could throw more than 27 pitches, and the Yankees’ hitters could do nothing to break through, essentially giving a master class on how to run a bullpen game.

Burland, who lost Game 3 after allowing home runs to Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm, pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit on 20 pitches and striking out two.

Once again, the Blue Jays got off to a quick start, scoring first as they had in the past three games. Then, George Springer hit a double, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a single, his ninth RBI of the series, to take the lead.

The Yankees were once again in a come-from-behind mode, and in the third inning, Ryan McMahon hit the first solo home run of his postseason career over the right field to tie the game.

In the end, the winning run was given to Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlitler in the fifth inning, but in his last start, he pitched eight scoreless innings and recorded 12 strikeouts in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox.

It was the Blue Jays who repeatedly put the ball in play, extending their lead in the first inning with singles by Ernie Clement and Andres Jimenez and George Springer scoring Clement on a sacrifice fly. Schlitler, a 24-year-old rookie right-hander, allowed eight hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Toronto got an insurance run in the seventh inning when Ernie Clement singled to right field, his ninth of the series. Andres Jimenez then reached on a fielder’s choice thanks to an error by second baseman Jazz Chisholm, allowing Clement to advance to third base. Schlitler was relieved by Devin Williams and allowed Rooks a two-run homer to extend the lead.

Pinch hitter Myles Straw hit an RBI single in the eighth inning, sending thousands of fans to the exits of Yankee Stadium. The Yankees’ last scoring threat came to nothing in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded after Austin Wells got a fly out.

The Yankees are trying to climb out of a 2-0 ALDS hole, which they accomplished in 2017, but they have faced questions this offseason and have fallen short of a championship again despite having the third-highest opening day salary in the majors.

— Scooby Axon, USA TODAY Sports

The schedule for Wednesday’s game is as follows:

Myles Straw hit a one-out single in the top of the eighth inning against Camilo Doval, increasing Toronto’s lead to 5-1. David Bednar took the mound, with Andres Jimenez and George Springer connecting runners to first and third base.

Jazz Chisholm could not handle a hot shot that could have been an inning-ending double play, opening the door for the Blue Jays to counterattack in the seventh inning. Devin Williams relieved starter Cam Schlitzer and struck out George Springer, but Nathan Rooks hit a two-run home run with two outs to put the Blue Jays up 4-1.

Eric Lauer intentionally walked Aaron Judge, and with one out and no bases, Cody Bellinger lined out to left for two outs. Yariel Rodriguez replaced Lauer and gave up a walk to Giancarlo Stanton, but forced Jazz Chisholm to ground out and end the inning with runners in scoring position.

Ernie Clement and Andres Jimenez started the top of the fifth inning with singles against Cam Schlitter, the latter being unmanned and Clement advancing to third base. George Springer hit a sacrifice fly to center field that gave them the winning run, but Schlitzer limited the damage by striking out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with two outs.

Addison Berger hit a leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning against Cam Schlitler, but the rookie right-hander forced flyouts to Alejandro Kirk and Dalton Varsho, then struck out Anthony Santander at third base.

Ryan McMahon, acquired in July, hit a solo home run off left-hander Mason Fluharty in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 1-1. McMahon enters Game 3 of the 2025 postseason with three hits (all singles) in 12 at-bats.

Today is the anniversary of Don Larsen’s only perfect game of the World Series, when the New York Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0 in Game 5 of 1956. There won’t be a game like that in Game 4 of the ALDS, as both starting pitchers allowed hits in the first inning. Toronto took an early 1-0 lead with three hits, but New York wasted Aaron Judge’s one-for-one hit (his 12th postseason hit).

The Blue Jays got the ball rolling from the start, with George Springer getting the party started with a go-ahead double over left field on Yankees rookie starting pitcher Cam Schlitzer’s second pitch, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scoring his ninth RBI in the ALDS. With the third out, Cody Bellinger made a nice sliding play that stranded two batters on base, preventing further damage.

john Message from Manager Schneider to pitchers ahead of the bullpen game

“Be flexible, be prepared. Again, we’ve done this. A lot of teams have done this. There’s no set script. I think everyone has some idea of where they fit in the lineup, and things can change in a hurry.”

“I think (the pitching coaches and bullpen coaches) have done a really good job of communicating that to them, and I think they’ve done enough to the point where they’ve prepared. You never know how a game is going to start, so you can make the best plans and that changes.”

“So I think they have to be flexible and ready to go when the phone rings.”

aaron Boone named starting pitcher for Yankees

“The rotation was huge for us this year, especially because we started playing really well over the last six or eight weeks of the season. A lot of things started with our starting pitching and just being able to give us whether it was our best six or seven innings or even our best fifth inning. Just our starting pitching gave us a real chance to win ballgames every day.”

“Sometimes that’s the nature of the postseason. It’s not going to be perfect. Other guys are really good, other teams are really good. And the Blue Jays have done a good job against the starting pitching here in the first three games of the series.”

“The last three days have been pretty positive for him. He took a hit in a little simulation game with Max (Scherzer) and Chris (Basitt) in Toronto. He runs for the first time today. We’re going to take it one day at a time and just listen to how he feels.”

“I talked to him when he got here yesterday and I think he’s probably turned a little bit of a corner in terms of making steady progress, not just hitting in the cage, but knowing he’s going to be facing live pitches and running for the first time today.”

“So I think he’s making some progress and we want to take it one day at a time.”

Pornhub claims it doesn’t have to comply with state’s new age verification laws

A new law in Ohio requires a photo ID or other authentication to access pornography online. But Pornhub says the new rules don’t apply to its business

play

A new law in Ohio requires a photo ID or other authentication to access pornography online. However, Pornhub says the new rules do not apply to its business.

Mashable reports that Pornhub has not shut down in Ohio and has not enabled age verification as required by the new law that went into effect on September 30th.

Under Ohio law, organizations that sell or present material or performance that is “obscene or harmful to young people” must verify users’ ages with photo identification or other records, such as mortgage or employment data. Companies that do not comply risk facing litigation.

However, the law does not apply to “interactive computer services,” a broad term that the court ruled includes Google, Meta, and other web hosting platforms. Generally, these companies are not responsible for third-party content published on their sites.

Pornhub’s parent company Aylo told Mashable that the same exception applies to its business.

“We understand that we are not subject to any obligations under the (new Ohio law) regarding age verification requirements for the ‘interactive computer services’ we provide (such as Pornhub),” Airo said in a statement.

Republican lawmakers and groups like the Center for Christian Virtue supported the change.

“Parents need the power to protect their children’s innocence,” David Mahan of the Christian Virtue Center said in 2023. “This bill is another vital step in prioritizing the safety of children over the economic aspirations of a predatory industry.”

Pornhub has recently been blocked in more than 20 states and multiple countries, including France, due to age verification laws and other restrictions.

Dolly Parton’s health: Country star breaks her silence

Dolly Parton is sharing an update on her health, a day after her sister energized the superstar’s fan base by asking for prayers.

“I know everyone thinks you’re sicker than me these days,” Parton said in a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday, with the caption, “I’m not dead yet!”

“Do I look sick to you?” Parton said in the video. “I’m doing my best here!”

Parton said she was filming the video on Oct. 8 in between work on a commercial and said, “I just want to put some peace of mind to people who I think are really worried.” She assured fans that she was “okay” but said she had “some issues” to deal with and had undergone “several treatments.”

The singer went on to say that after her husband Karl Dean passed away earlier this year, she “didn’t take care of myself” and “let go of a lot of things that I should have taken care of.”

“When I tried to fix it, the doctor said, ‘We need to deal with this, we need to deal with that.’ It wasn’t anything major, but I had to cancel some errands to be closer to home,” she explained.

But Parton added, “I just wanted you to know that I’m not going to die!” She concluded, “I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God will finish me. And I’m not done yet.”

The 79-year-old’s comments come on the heels of Freida Parton, who called for fellow “prayer warriors” on her sister’s behalf.

“Last night I prayed all night for my sister Dolly,” Parton wrote in an Oct. 7 Facebook post. “Many of you know that she hasn’t been at her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I was (led) to ask all those who love her around the world to become prayer warriors and pray with me.”

The post concluded with, “She is strong and loved. And every prayer is being said for her so I know in my heart she will be okay. Godspeed my sissy Dolly. We all love you! ❤️.”

Dolly Parton previously opened up about her health issues in a social media post on September 28, announcing the postponement of her Las Vegas concert.

“As many of you know, I have some health issues and doctors have told me that I need some procedures,” she said. “I won’t be able to rehearse and put together the show I want you to see and the show you deserve to see. You’re paying good money to see me perform, and I want the best for you.”

Although her condition still allows her to “work on all my projects from here in Nashville,” Ms. Parton said she “just needs some time to prepare for the show.”

Toyota named most likely brand to reach 250,000 miles

play

  • A new study from iSeeCars.com ranked car brands by how likely they are to reach 250,000 miles.
  • The top four brands were significantly above average, while the remaining 28 brands were below average.

Not all cars are built for long distance driving, but some brands consistently produce long distance cars.

A new study from iSeeCars.com finds that four brands have a firm advantage: Toyota, Lexus, Honda, and Acura. Of course, Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand, and Acura is Honda’s luxury brand, so there is a connection.

4 brand vehicles are more likely to reach 250,000 miles than the industry average. In fact, Toyota vehicles are 3.7 times more likely than average to reach that milestone, according to the study, which was evaluated based on data from 174 million vehicles. The results cover 32 different brands.

The probability of driving a Toyota vehicle for 250,000 miles is approximately 18%. Compare this to the bottom three brands: Jaguar, Mini and Maserati. Studies have shown that the chances of their vehicles reaching 250,000 miles are essentially zero. That doesn’t mean those cars can’t achieve that much mileage, it just doesn’t record that potential in the data, and of course it also means that it’s still a feat even for Toyota.

Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars, said the findings aren’t necessarily surprising, but they may be more extreme than expected.

He likened the impact of the four high-performing brands to smart kids at school falling off the bell curve.

“It’s strange when you consider that there are 32 brands and only four of them are above average and 28 are below average,” he said.

The survey demonstrated the reputation for reliability that Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda have enjoyed for years. For example, it’s fine to find links online to articles that discuss why Toyota cars are so reliable.

Brauer noted that while these companies are not perfect, they are focused on engineering excellence.

“They designed it well from the beginning, and they built it well after it was designed,” he said of both companies’ vehicles.

Fans of American automakers can probably take some comfort in knowing that GMC, Tesla, Chevrolet, and Cadillac fared best among the remaining brands surveyed.

Brauer said GMC and Chevrolet make sense because they produce trucks and large SUVs that will likely be used frequently. Teslas, and perhaps other electric vehicles, should also have better reliability because they have fewer parts that can fail, he noted.

A car that can maintain high mileage provides an important value increase in the era of expensive new cars. The average transaction price for a new car in August reached $49,077, up from $48,841 in July, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Tropical Cyclone Jerry Path Tracker, Spaghetti Model, Forecast

Tropical Storm Jerry formed in the Atlantic Ocean on October 7 and is expected to strengthen in the coming days.

The National Hurricane Center said in an Oct. 8 advisory that Jerry was located about 1,335 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph and strong gusts. Jerry is expected to strengthen over the next few days and become a hurricane by Thursday, October 9, forecasters said.

The system’s core is expected to be near or north of the northern Leeward Islands late Thursday, October 9 and late Friday, October 10, according to the advisory. Jerry is moving toward the west-northwest, and this movement is expected to continue at a slower rate over the next few days, before gradually turning northward on Friday.

Forecasters said Jerry could bring 2 to 4 inches of rain across the Leeward Islands Thursday into early Friday. Additionally, the swell generated by Jerry is expected to reach the Leeward and Windward Islands on Thursday, October 9th, and spread westward toward the Greater Antilles on Friday, October 10th.

“These swells are likely to create life-threatening wave and rip current conditions,” the hurricane center said.

This forecast track shows the most likely path of the storm’s center. This does not indicate the full width of the storm or its impact, and the center of the storm can move outside the cone up to 33% of the time.

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes are formed over warm water in the tropics. Thunderstorms can form over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees. If conditions are right, the cluster will swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical cyclone.

A tropical cyclone becomes a named tropical cyclone when its sustained wind speed reaches 39 miles per hour. When wind speeds reach 114 miles per hour, a storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Prepare for hurricanes now

Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it’s too late. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends, “Get disaster supplies while shelves are stocked and get your insurance check early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.”

  • make an evacuation plan. If you are in danger of a hurricane, you need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to start planning where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
  • Prepare disaster prevention supplies. Whether you’re evacuating or sheltering in place, you’ll need supplies to not only survive the storm, but also likely for the long-term aftermath, NOAA says.
  • Get an insurance check and fill out the paperwork with your belongings. Contact your insurance company or agent today to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or replace your home and belongings. Note that home insurance and renters insurance do not cover floods, so you will need separate insurance for those. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • Create a family communication plan. NOAA says you should take the time now to write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family. Decide where your family will gather, and be sure to include locations outside the city in case you evacuate.
  • strengthen your home. Now is the time to make your home more resilient to hurricanes. We cut down trees and install storm shutters, accordion shutters, and impact-resistant glass. Seal openings in exterior walls.

Long John Silver’s ditches fish for chicken with new logo

Long John Silver’s is adding something new to its menu and logo: chicken.

Months after Cracker Barrel’s logo scandal angered some customers, including President Donald Trump, Long John Silver’s unveiled its own “redesigned logo” on October 3. The Lexington, Kentucky-based seafood chain known for its fried seafood platters is now “putting the chicken front and center” by replacing its signature fish illustration with a stylized chicken to spotlight non-fish items like fried chicken.

“For years, our customers have told us that our chicken is our best-kept secret,” Christopher Caudill, director of marketing for Long John Silver, said in a statement. “The hand-battered chicken strips known as chicken planks are as mouth-watering as the legendary fish, and now it’s time to reveal their secrets.”

Long John Silver’s new logo puts ‘chicken front and center’

Long John Silver’s said the decision to refresh its logo was based on “successful product testing” at its Louisville flagship store.

One of the recipes tested was the chicken wrap, which features spicy Nashville hot chicken, seafood, special crumbles, sauces, and other ingredients in a warm tortilla.

“This brand was built with the idea of making the coastal experience accessible to everyone, so seafood will always be part of our DNA,” Caudill said. “But chicken is part of our heritage and a big part of our future, so it deserves a rightful place in our logo, on our menu and at our guests’ tables.”

Long John Silver’s is still testing its menu for possible chicken varieties, but currently features a $6 basket with four options: chicken plank, hand-battered fish, battered and soaked shrimp, or grilled shrimp.

The chicken currently available at Long John Silver’s is:

  • 3 pieces chicken
  • Assorted fish and chicken
  • Assorted fish, chicken and shrimp
  • 2 piece chicken combo
  • 2 piece chicken basket
  • 1 piece chicken
  • chicken share 9 pieces
  • super sampler platter
  • 3 piece chicken meal

President Trump says he “taken away freedom of speech” by burning the flag

play

  • President Trump said his administration had “taken away freedom of speech” in connection with the flag burning during a roundtable discussion on Antifa.
  • In August, President Trump issued an executive order calling on his administration to prosecute those who burn the American flag, calling such acts “uniquely offensive and provocative.”

President Donald Trump said on October 8 that his administration had “taken away freedom of speech” over flag burning, which the Supreme Court has ruled is protected by the First Amendment.

“We took away free speech because it went through the courts, and the courts said there was free speech, but what actually happened was they agitated and irritated the crowd by burning the flag,” Trump said during a roundtable discussion on Antifa. “I have never seen a situation where there would be violence on either side.”

Trump made the comment in reference to conservative influencer Nick Souter, who reported being attacked after trying to stop flag burning at a protest, according to Oregon Live.

President Trump also referenced his Aug. 25 executive order directing his administration to prosecute people who burn the American flag.

The order described the flag as “our most sacred and cherished symbol” and said its desecration was “uniquely offensive and provocative.”

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 1989 case involving Gregory Lee Johnson, who burned the flag in protest of then-President Ronald Reagan’s administration, that flag-burning was protected speech.

The court found that First Amendment rights are not limited to oral or written speech. The ruling said states could seek to stop “imminently illegal acts” but added that acts like Johnson’s are and should be protected.

During the roundtable, President Trump reiterated his position that flag burning does not protect speech, saying, “Burning the American flag incites great violence.”

White House press secretary Abigail Jackson told USA TODAY that President Trump will “always uphold the First Amendment while implementing common sense, tough-on-crime policies to prevent violence and disorder.”

“President Trump will not allow the Star-Spangled Flag, a special symbol of our nation’s greatness, to be used as a tool to incite violence and insurrection that threatens the safety of everyday Americans,” Jackson said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said at an executive order signing ceremony in August that the administration could prosecute flag burning “without violating the First Amendment.”

Hours after the signing, a man was arrested for burning the flag outside the White House. U.S. Park Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of violating the National Park Service’s fire policy, which prohibits arson “except in designated areas or containers and under conditions established by superintendents.”

Gene Simmons made the comments after reports surfaced that he was involved in a car accident in Malibu, California.

“Thank you everyone for your kind wishes,” Simmons wrote in an Oct. 8 X post. “I’m totally fine. I got a little fender bend. That’s common, especially for us (we) bad drivers. And that’s me. Everything is fine.”

The 76-year-old KISS frontman was driving on the Pacific Coast Highway on Tuesday, October 7, when he crashed into a parked car, according to NBC 4 Los Angeles. Witnesses reportedly called 911, after which Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to the scene.

USA TODAY has reached out to LASD and Simmons’ representatives for comment.

Simmons was hospitalized for tests after the accident, police told NBC. Authorities said Simmons gave a detailed description of the crash to first responders, stating that he either passed out or passed out and crashed into a parked vehicle.

Simmons’ wife, Shannon Tweed, told NBC that Simmons is currently recovering at home.

The tireless rocker embarked on a solo tour in the spring with a solo band consisting of Brent Woods on lead guitar, Jason Walker on guitar, and Brian Tichy on drums. In a March interview with USA TODAY, Simmons cheekily revealed the secret to her longevity.

“Do you see my hands?” Simmons said at the time. “They don’t shake, and I’m 75 years old. Kids, stop doing drugs, stop drinking, stop smoking.”

President Trump says Israeli hostages in Gaza will be released ‘soon’

0

The first phase of the agreement called for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says Israel and Hamas have agreed to implement the first phase of the White House peace plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza, and that Israeli hostages will soon be released.

In an Oct. 8 statement, President Trump said Israel would also withdraw its troops from Gaza “under agreement,” declaring the agreement a first step toward lasting and lasting peace in the region.

“Today is a great day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, neighboring countries, and the United States of America,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “I thank the mediators in Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for working together to make this historic and unprecedented event possible.”

The announcement came after President Trump said he was considering a last-minute trip to the Middle East to help finalize a deal that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the militant group Hamas first announced their support for last week.

This comes after repeated failed attempts to defuse the two-year war, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages.

Israeli military operations in response have killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

The first phase of the agreement expected hostages to be released in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. There are 48 hostages remaining in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

In a statement, Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked President Trump for his commitment to the deal and expressed his desire to expand peace with Israel’s neighbors.

“This is a great day for Israel. Tomorrow we will convene the government to approve the deal and bring all our precious hostages home,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said.

As part of its plan, Hamas is keen to hand over control of Gaza to a coalition of Palestinian technocrats. It is less willing to disarm completely and is not committed to playing no further role in governing Gaza.

Negotiators from Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and the United States met for several days in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and on behalf of the United States, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

A deal appeared to be on the horizon when President Trump said on the afternoon of October 8 that he was considering a visit to Egypt. President Trump said at the time, “We are in the final negotiations with Hamas, and they seem to be going well.”

Kimmel skewers Trump, Epstein files in AG Pam Bondi video

Jimmy Kimmel mocked Attorney General Pam Bondi’s appearance at a Senate hearing where she refused to answer questions about the Epstein file.

play

Jimmy Kimmel still has his teeth set on President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the comedian slammed Attorney General Pam Bondi for refusing to answer questions at a Senate hearing despite repeatedly promising not to release the so-called Epstein File, the incriminating evidence about convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein held by the FBI and Department of Justice.

“There were a lot of questions about the Epstein file, but no answers about the Epstein file,” Kimmel said.

He also showed footage of former prosecutor and Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse asking Bondi if he knew if the FBI had discovered a photo of President Trump with a “half-naked young woman” that Epstein had circulated, to which the attorney general responded, “You sit here and make vile statements and try to smear President Trump again, on the left and the right…”

After the video, Kimmel said, “You didn’t hear the word ‘no’ there, did you?”

Mr. Kimmel then played footage of Mr. Whitehouse repeating the question before Mr. Bondy rolled his eyes and asked, “You don’t know anything about that?” Bondi responded with silence, which the White House took as a no.

“Attorney General, did you eat the Polaroid yourself?” Kimmel joked.

It then played Bondi’s response to Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin’s question about why he didn’t compile a list of Epstein’s clients. In it, the attorney general said she had not reviewed the list and that other files were waiting on her desk.

“[She]had other things to do. ‘Do I want Bigfoot to turn my child into a transgender person? No! Let me do my job,'” Kimmel joked.

Kimmel continued, “One thing we know for sure is that Donald Trump doesn’t want us to see these files. To me, that’s all you need to know. I mean, you walk up to a teenager and he suddenly takes off the cover and slams his laptop shut. I think we have a good idea why. We don’t need to see his browser history.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment.

The segment featured Kimmel making fun of Trump after the president increased his approval ratings while the president mocked Kimmel about his TV ratings. Kimmel has been particularly harsh against the president, claiming that the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission pressured ABC to take action and tried to “cancel” him after Trump was suspended after Trump celebrated the move.

“I have no choice but to feel sorry for him. He did everything in his power to cancel me. In return, he forced millions of people to watch the show,” he responded in a monologue during ABC’s late-night show’s return after its cancellation. “It backfired in a big way. Now he may have to release Epstein’s files to distract us.”

Sam’s Club sells weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wigoby

play

Add Sam’s Club to the list of retail pharmacy options for consumers looking to purchase expensive weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegoby.

Sam’s Club pharmacies currently sell Novo Nordisk’s Wigoby and Ozempic for $499 a month. Costco sells blockbuster prescription weight loss drugs at the same discounted prices.

Novo Nordisk is expanding its discounted retail options for consumers who want to buy medicines directly. The Danish drugmaker previously announced that prescription drug discount website GoodRx would sell Ozempic and Wegovy for $499 per month. Consumers can also purchase Wegovy prescribed through the company’s NovoCare Pharmacy for $499 per month.

The drugmaker is looking to expand purchasing options for Ozempic and Wigovy, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs that suppress users’ appetite and lead to weight loss. Novo Nordisk faces competition from telemedicine companies that sell Eli Lilly’s Zepbound and Maunjaro, as well as combination versions of Ozempic and Wigovy, despite Food and Drug Administration regulations against counterfeit drugs.

How do I purchase Ozempic and Wegovy at Sam’s Club?

Sam’s Club members can purchase prescription Wegovy and Ozempic for $499 per month using their Novo Nordisk co-pay card. The retailer can also deliver refrigerated injections to your home. Sam’s Club Plus members will receive free same-day delivery on club orders placed by 2 p.m., while non-members will pay $12 for same-day delivery, the retailer said.

Sam’s Club said its approximately 570 pharmacies in the U.S. also sell temperature-controlled medications such as insulin, antibiotics and other specialty prescriptions.

Warehouse Retailer has two membership levels. Club membership is $50 per year and Plus membership is $110 per year.

We have insurance. What are my options?

Wegovy is prescribed for adults who are trying to lose weight, are obese, or have heart disease. Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

Research shows that insurance companies are more likely to cover GLP-1 drugs if prescribed for diabetes or heart disease. Mercer, a benefits consultant, said 44% of all large employers will have GLP-1 drug coverage for obesity in 2024, up from 41% in 2023.

The list price for Wegoby is $1,349 for a one-month dose, but Novo Nordisk says most customers are paying much less than that. Novo Nordisk says about 9 out of 10 consumers with insurance plans that cover Ozempic pay less than $25 a month. Customers who pay for the drug out-of-pocket can purchase it for $499 at Costco, Sam’s Club, GoodR.X. and the drugmaker’s Novocare pharmacies.

What is a banned book? Here’s how they’re being challenged in the US

0

More than 3,700 unique books were banned during the 2024-2025 school year, more than double the titles tracked in the 2021-2022 school year, when PEN America began counting.

The nonprofit organization, dedicated to defending freedom of expression, found a total of 6,870 book bans from 2024 to 2025. Their “Banning in the United States” report states that book banning is “rampant and common” and warns that it is becoming “normalized.”

But what does banning a book actually mean? How does it happen? USA TODAY’s Banned Books Week answers your questions.

What is a banned book?

The American Library Association is a founding member of the Banned Books Week Coalition, which tracks book issues, or efforts to remove or restrict materials, as well as book bans, or the actual removal of these titles from public spaces. PEN America, one of this week’s sponsors, defines a book ban as any action taken against a title based on its content.

Kasey Meehan, director of Freedom to Read at PEN America, says the guiding principle is access. Regardless of the time spent away from the bookshelf, the ability to read the book is limited or diminished.

“For us, a book ban means that a book that was previously available to students is no longer available based on its content,” Meehan said.

This can occur due to challenges from community members or outside groups, pressure from elected officials, or legislation from the state. Books were prohibited from being sold in school libraries, classroom curricula, classroom libraries, and public libraries.

Some argue that if books are removed from schools, students can instead obtain them from bookstores, online retailers, or other libraries. But Meehan says there are still barriers.

“Schools and school libraries play an important role in providing students with access to literature. Not all students can just buy books on Amazon. Not all students can walk, bike, or even drive to their local public library,” Meehan said. “Restricting that access will not only ban the books, it will only hurt students’ access to information.”

Is it legal to ban a book?

“The law is very shaky,” says Lauren Zimmerman, a lawyer representing the authors of the children’s book “And It Takes Three” in a lawsuit against the Florida district that removed the book.

“America doesn’t have a large, well-developed history of removing books from school libraries and schools,” Zimmerman said. “Nothing is fully developed, nothing is black and white, and that’s what’s happening right now. That’s why it’s so important that people pay attention, because the laws around this – what’s legal, what’s illegal, and when you can and can’t take down books – are being decided across the country right now.”

In some cases, lawyers have argued that banning books featuring LGBTQ+ characters amounts to viewpoint discrimination, Zimmerman said. In other cases, judges have ruled that school libraries are “First Amendment free zones” and that these protections do not apply to them.

How does a book get banned?

We’ll use the example of “And Tango Makes Three” in Escambia County, Florida. Published in 2005, this picture book tells the true story of two male penguins, Roy and Silo, who start a family together after a Central Park zookeeper gives them eggs to care for.

1. Try a book

Book objections are often filed to challenge its content. In the case of “Tango,” the charges were “an LGBTQ agenda using penguins” for the purpose of “indoctrination.”

The award-winning book “Tango” has been on library shelves since 2005. The book was challenged after Ron DeSantis’ Parents’ Rights in Education Act (which opponents called the “Don’t Tell Me I’m Gay” law) was signed into law in 2022 as the Curriculum Transparency Act. Part of the law required school districts to catalog all books available in libraries and classrooms for formal review and complaint processing.

2. Voting by the Committee

Several committees will participate. First is a committee made up of educators, librarians, parents, and community members, and then the district materials committee. In the case of “Tango,” both committees voted to keep the book on the shelf.

Florida’s Sunshine Law requires such decisions to be made in public hearings so that local residents can have their voices heard.

3. If you have an objection, go to the Board of Education.

The challenger appealed the district materials committee’s decision and took “Tango” to the school board, Zimmerman said. Unlike a board, a school board is made up of elected officials. At a public hearing, the Board of Education resolved to delete “Tango.”

4. The book is removed and the author takes action (in some cases)

“Tango” has been removed from school shelves in several districts in Florida. Here, Zimmerman appeared on behalf of writers Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. In general, options for banned authors are limited and expensive, Zimmerman said.

The “Tango” case in Escambia County is ongoing. However, another case in Nassau County was settled in 2024, and “Tango” returned to store shelves. The plaintiffs alleged that the school district illegally removed “Tango” without a public hearing or community input.

What books are prohibited?

Books that feature LGBTQ+ characters and characters, as well as characters and characters of color, are disproportionately affected by book bans. Commonly censored books deal with themes of race, sexuality, gender identity, substance abuse, suicide, depression, and other mental health issues.

According to the PEN America report, the top banned books include Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, Jennifer Niven’s Breathless and Patricia McCormick’s Sordo. Frequently banned books, such as Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer: A Memoir” and George M. Johnson’s “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” are not included in this year’s report because they rarely remain on store shelves once they are banned, Meehan said.

Meehan said this year’s report had “expanded” its scope, with more books featuring a “wider range of sexual experiences” including sexual violence.

Who is objecting to or banning books?

According to PEN America, most book bans occurred in Florida (2,304), Texas (1,781) and Tennessee (1,622). There were 590 bans issued by the Department of Defense.

A 2025 ALA analysis found that 16% of concerns raised about books were by parents, with most complaints filed by “pressure groups” and government agencies.

A 2024 Knight Foundation poll found that two-thirds of Americans oppose efforts to limit books in public schools. Additionally, 78% of adults surveyed are confident that their school will select the right books for their students.

What is a “mortgage desert” and why is it important?

0

play

Consumer advocates and policymakers have long been concerned about banking deserts, areas where residents lack access to depository institutions and must rely on more expensive and less secure services such as check cashers.

A new report draws attention to mortgage deserts, or regions where home sales are much more likely to be financed with cash than with a mortgage. They range from Hudspeth County, Texas, where just 2% of home sales included a mortgage, to Detroit, Michigan, where nearly two-thirds of sales included a mortgage.

A report from the progressive Consumer Federation of America argues that it is important to document areas where mortgage access (often a proxy for mortgage access) is rare.

“Without access to mortgages, homeownership would be out of reach for most people,” wrote Sharon Cornelissen, director of housing at CFA and author of the report. “Access to housing finance is uneven across communities, creating exclusion and inequality of opportunity.”

Mortgage deserts exist in both rural and urban areas, but for different reasons. In rural areas, where manufactured housing can represent a larger proportion of the housing stock and has traditionally been more difficult to obtain mortgage financing, new developments in construction and regulatory changes are helping to change the situation.

Rural counties may also have a higher percentage of affordable housing. In most of the counties CFA classifies as rural mortgage deserts, average home prices range from $53,000 to $91,200, significantly lower than the national median home value of $303,400 in 2023.

“Small” mortgages are often difficult to obtain. Lenders generally have to put in the same amount of effort and resources to get a mortgage of any size, so they may shy away from lower-cost mortgages. They may also have a hard time taking on cheaper housing because they require extensive repairs. “In the so-called ‘appraisal gap,’ the total cost of purchasing and renovating these homes often exceeds their renovated appraised value,” Cornelissen explained.

Finally, black residents make up twice as much of the population in rural mortgage deserts as in other rural areas: 15% versus 7%.

In contrast, the top urban mortgage deserts are mostly historically disinvested, primarily in black cities like Baltimore, Memphis, and Philadelphia. Many of these cities lost jobs during the decline of manufacturing in the 1920s.th A century later, many homes are still in disrepair or vacant, leading to an overall decline in real estate values.

As the report points out, mortgages not only enable the purchase of a home, but also give users financial flexibility. Homeowners enjoy luxuries that renters rarely have. You’ll have more stable monthly payments over time, and you’ll also have the opportunity to refinance your payments if interest rates drop.

Owners also gain home equity that can be used for home improvements, education, other expenses, or reverse mortgages for seniors. And, as USA TODAY reported, by forcing owners to save, American owners end up with far more wealth than renters.

“Without mortgages, families cannot become homeowners, cash investors have free reign, and communities struggle to build wealth,” Cornelissen concluded in the release.

President Trump says he may visit the Middle East to see the Gaza peace deal come to fruition

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he may visit the Middle East this weekend in an effort to reach a peace deal between Israel and Hamas to end the region’s wars.

President Trump said on October 8 that he believed there was a “good chance” that a peace deal would happen, adding that if he were to travel, he would be in the Middle East on Saturday or Sunday.

President Trump said, “We’ll see, but it’s very likely. Negotiations are progressing very well.” “Last negotiations are being held with Hamas and appear to be going well.”

The Trump administration team, led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, is in Egypt for indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.

President Trump has not decided where in the Middle East he will visit, but said it would “probably” be Egypt. He said a visit to Gaza was also under consideration. “Maybe. I haven’t decided exactly.”

Hamas announced on October 3 that it had agreed to parts of President Trump’s 20-point plan to end Israel’s two-year war in Gaza. This includes the release of all Israeli hostages, living and dead, from Gaza. President Trump quickly touted Hamas’ statement, calling today a “very special day” and vowing to secure a formal agreement from the terrorist organization.

On October 7, Hamas marked the second anniversary of the attack on Israel and said it was ready to reach a deal to end the war based on President Trump’s plan, but noted hurdles remained. Hamas leader Khalil al-Haya told Egypt’s state-run Al-Kahela news television that Hamas had come “to carry out serious and responsible negotiations.”

Arrests made in Los Angeles’ Palisades fire

An arrest has been made in connection with the deadly Palisades fire that ripped through parts of Los Angeles earlier this year, but is now believed to have been caused by arson, authorities announced Tuesday.

The fire, along with the Eaton Fire in another part of Los Angeles County, broke out on January 7 and continued to burn for several weeks. Together, the two fires claimed at least 31 lives, and researchers estimate the toll to be much higher. Thousands of homes and other structures were destroyed.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, is accused of starting the fire in the early hours of January 1, authorities said. Kenny Cooper, special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Los Angeles Field Division, said the fire was initially extinguished, but it continued to burn underground until winds ignited it and the Palisades Fire was never found.

Ciaran McEvoy, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney’s Office, said Linderknecht did not enter a plea during his first appearance in federal court in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 8 because he was appointed a public defender. Rinderknecht is scheduled to return to court for a detention hearing on October 9th.

If convicted, Linderknecht could face five to 20 years in federal prison, authorities said.

“The Palisades Fire, reported on January 7th, was caused by an intentionally set fire,” Cooper said. “High winds brought this subterranean fire to the surface and spread above ground, sparking one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history, known as the Palisades Fire.”

The Palisades Fire has burned more than 23,000 acres, destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings and killed 12 people, according to CalFire. Three other civilians and a firefighter were also injured in the fire, the agency said.

Officials said at a news conference that Rinderknecht was working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve and dropped off passengers in the Palisades area. Prosecutors said two passengers he drove with that night told investigators he seemed “agitated and angry.”

The men then walked from the trailhead to the top of the hill, igniting what is known as the Luckman Fire at about 12:12 a.m. on Jan. 1, said Bill Esseri, deputy district attorney for the Central District of California. Before lighting the fire, Rinderknecht allegedly listened to a rap song with a music video depicting setting things on fire.

After setting the fire, the man called 911 before leaving the scene, but then turned around and returned to the trail, taking videos and photos of the fire and firefighters working to extinguish it, authorities said.

Linderknecht, also known as “Jonathan Linder” and “John Linder,” is familiar with the Palisades area and is a resident of Southern California who later moved to Melbourne, Florida.

Esseri said the suspect was known to law enforcement and had been questioned as of Jan. 24. He currently faces federal charges of criminal damage to property by fire.

Esseri said the case will go to a grand jury and prosecutors may seek additional charges.

The criminal complaint against Linderknecht further alleges that Linderknecht lied to authorities that he only discovered the fire after leaving the vacant lot and walking back down the hill to his car.

A report released in late July said the wildfires were among the costliest in U.S. history, with a combined cost of $65 billion. A separate report released last month by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors found outdated policies, communication gaps and staff shortages all hindering authorities’ ability to respond and warn residents about rapidly progressing fires.

Palisades fire suspect uses AI to generate images of burning city

Federal investigators said Jonathan Rinderknecht used ChatGPT to create disturbing fire-themed visuals before the deadly Palisades fire.

Palisades suspect calls 911 after arson, uses ChatGPT: prosecutors

Before setting the fire on January 1, Rinderknecht used his iPhone to listen to the song “Un Zder, Un The” by French artist Jossman, according to a criminal complaint. Rinderknecht also told investigators that he grew up in France and was fluent in French.

Records also show that Rinderknecht listened to the song nine times in the four days leading up to the fire. The music video, which depicts someone setting something on fire, was watched three times during that time, according to the complaint.

Essayli said investigators found an AI-generated image of a burning city on one of Rinderknecht’s devices. According to the complaint, the image was created in July 2024 using the following prompt: “A dystopian painting divided into separate parts that seamlessly blend together. On the far left is a burning forest. Next to it, a large group of people are fleeing a fire, continuing to the center. In the center, hundreds of thousands of poor people are trying to pass through a huge gate with a large dollar sign.”

“On the other side of the gate and across the walls is a collection of the wealthiest people. They watch the world burn and watch coldly as people struggle. They laugh, have fun, and dance. The scenes are detailed and impactful, highlighting the sharp contrasts and direct connections between different parts of the world.”

The complaint says Rinderknecht tried to call 911 several times after starting the fire just after midnight. Many attempts were unsuccessful, but officials said the man may not have had cell phone reception in the area. He was eventually able to get through, but by then nearby residents had already called 911.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspect also used the ChatGPT AI platform during the 911 call to ask the following question: “If a cigarette caused a fire, would it be your fault?”

The search and 911 call were screen recorded using his cell phone, showing that he “wanted to preserve evidence of his attempts to help put out the fire and to produce evidence regarding a more innocent explanation for the cause of the fire,” according to the complaint.

The Jan. 1 fire became the Palisades Fire.

The Palisades fire is believed to have started on January 7th, and authorities said it was a so-called “holdover fire.” Residual fires, also known as “zombie fires,” can continue to burn underground and flare up again later.

Firefighters extinguished the Luckman Fire on Jan. 1, which burned 8 to 10 acres, before extinguishing it later that day and intentionally leaving fire hoses in case they were to re-enter the area, according to the criminal complaint. They retrieved the hose on January 2nd.

“To their eyes, the fire appeared to be completely extinguished,” the complaint states.

The Ruckman fire was likely caused by an open flame from a lighter, according to the complaint. Other causes excluded include fireworks, lightning strikes, power lines, the refraction of sunlight through glass, and smoking, according to the complaint.

“I’m in complete shock.”

News of the arrest came as a complete surprise to Perry Akins, 85, and his wife Metal, 77. The couple raised two children and lost their Pacific Palisades home of 45 years in a fire.

“I would call it complete shock, if that’s the right word. I didn’t think someone would start a fire on purpose? I had no idea,” Perry Akins said in a phone call with USA TODAY on Oct. 8.

Metal Akins said he was even more speechless.

“I always thought it was natural causes. It’s amazing,” she said. “It would be a big deal if someone actually did that.”

The couple decided not to rebuild and subsequently moved to nearby Brentwood, California. Pacific Palisades Rotary Club President Perry Akins said the organization has spent months collecting donations for the Palisades Fire Relief Fund.

About 16 Rotary members lost their homes in the fire, Akins said. He added that the arrests will definitely be on the agenda at the meeting scheduled for tonight.

“I don’t think we’ll talk about anything else,” Akins said.
