Cindy McCain is recovering in Arizona after a mild stroke

Cindy McCain recently suffered a mild stroke, according to an Oct. 9 statement from the United Nations World Food Program, which she heads.

McCain, 71, is expected to make a full recovery, the statement said.

“I would like to thank the Italian medical staff for the excellent care they provided,” she said in a statement. “Thanks to their excellent care, my recovery is progressing well and I look forward to continuing my recovery with my family at home in Arizona.”

The organization said McCain will take four to six weeks off before returning to the World Food Program’s Rome headquarters after receiving medical clearance.

Her late husband, John McCain, served as a senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death from brain cancer in August 2018. He was the 2008 Republican presidential candidate. The couple married in 1980 and raised four children together.

Cindy McCain suffered a stroke in April 2004 at the age of 49, The Arizona Republic reported at the time. She was treated at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. John McCain said his wife developed high blood pressure after the stroke, and the doctor treating her said the condition is common for people who experience a stroke.

She served as U.S. ambassador to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations from November 2021 until her appointment as executive director of the World Food Program in March 2023. Then-President Joe Biden nominated her for the role. She supported Democrat Biden in the 2020 election.

The World Food Program provides food aid to more than 100 million people in 87 countries, according to the organization.

Israel Defense Forces announces ceasefire takes effect in Gaza Strip

The Israel Defense Forces announced that a ceasefire has come into effect in the Gaza Strip, after the Israeli government approved the first phase of President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

An October 10 statement from the IDF said Israeli forces were redeploying “along the latest lines of development” and preparing for the return of hostages held in Gaza. The statement warned that the military “continues to eliminate any immediate threats.”

The early approval of President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, a milestone in efforts to end the two-year war, came after several hours of debate by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet on October 9 and presentations by Trump advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

Negotiators from Israel and Hamas reached a deal on October 8, which President Trump announced on social media.

“This means that all hostages will soon be freed and that Israel will withdraw its forces to agreed fronts as a first step toward a strong, lasting, and everlasting peace,” President Trump wrote at the time.

The first phase of President Trump’s plan called for the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours of an agreement being reached in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

The agreement comes after repeated failed attempts to quell the two-year war, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages.

Release of the hostages is likely to begin on Monday, October 13, but they could be returned sooner, US officials said. Of the 48 hostages left in Gaza, 20 are believed to be alive.

President Trump plans to visit the Middle East in the coming days, and on October 9th said he would address the Israeli parliament if invited.

Coffee and non-alcoholic beer collaboration between Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland

Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland shared several major movie scenes in the ‘Marvel’ blockbuster. The two actors are currently collaborating on a beverage brand.

play

This is a new type of Marvel team-up. Actors Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland are collaborating off-camera on their own coffee and non-alcoholic beer brands.

Of course, the duo has previously teamed up as Iron Man and Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and The Avengers. If the two do face off in a future Marvel movie, it’s likely that they’ll be rivals against each other in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, with Downey playing the villainous Doctor Doom.

Downy has confirmed to Holland a collaboration between its own brands, Downy Happy Coffee and Holland’s BERO Non-Alcoholic Beer, and two new limited edition beverages: Happy Eternal Hooptimist Ground Coffee, roasted to exude ale-like pine and citrus aromas, and BERO Coffee Draft, a coffee-flavored stout with less than 0.5% ABV. Both are now available at Target stores and Target.com, as well as the Happy Coffee and Bero websites, the companies announced.

Tom Holland: Non-alcoholic beer and coffee taste ‘delicious’

Holland, an avid coffee drinker who launched a line of non-alcoholic beers nearly a year ago, discussed “new flavors and new styles” a few months ago, and said, “When I was drinking, one of my favorite drinks was a pint of Guinness,” Downey recalled in a recent video chat with USA TODAY. (Long before founding BERO, Holland talked about his journey to sobriety, which began in 2022.)

Later, at home, Holland poured himself a BERO, “I put a shot of Robert’s coffee in it, and it was out of this world,” Holland said. “I think the coffee brings a really nice nutty flavor.”

Just like on screen, the two actors quickly develop a rapport. When Downey participated, he first wanted to know how Holland felt after suffering a mild concussion on the set of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2026.

Logging in from a London hotel, Holland tells Downey that he has been back on set for a few days and is doing well.

“The movie is going very well. The director (Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’) is amazing,” he previously told USA TODAY. “We have some really exciting new cast members who are bringing these new characters to life. It’s just amazing.”

Downey, who co-founded Happy Coffee with entrepreneur Craig Dubitsky in January 2024, said the two brands are working well because each makes sense for him. “Tom is strangely a natural businessman,” he said, adding that Mr. Holland’s “insight is pretty strong” and that he built his company “really well.”

“I think it was organic,” Downey told Holland. “I mean, I believe[Coffee]was happy with me, so it’s very authentic about who you are.”

Downey said the collaboration also targets “a whole generation, the (Dutch) generation that thinks alcohol is a little bit overrated.”

BERO is “kind of serving this emerging market,” Downey said, as a recent Gallup poll found fewer U.S. adults say they consume alcohol, to an all-time low of 54%.

Charitable Giving: Downy’s Happy Coffee and Dutch BERO

Mental health is a major cause for Downey, who spoke about his journey to sobriety on Oprah in 2004. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is an equity partner in Happy Coffee, Downey said. Happy Coffee products, from whole bean coffee to ready-to-drink canned coffee beverages, also feature a QR code to connect consumers to the NAMI helpline.

There’s also a philanthropic side to Holland’s business, with a portion of the proceeds going to Brothers Trust, a fundraising organization founded in 2017 by his family, which includes his parents Nicky and Dominic Holland and his three siblings. One of the projects supported by the organization, Story Book Dads, records incarcerated fathers reading bedtime stories to children on CDs and DVDs. “It helps them maintain relationships with the kids outside,” Holland said.

Of collaborating with Downey, Holland said, “There is nothing more incredibly rewarding than teaming up with a friend that I respect and admire. I’m also extremely grateful for how the last 10 years of my career have worked out…We were able to do another truly amazing thing together.”

In response, Downey said, “You know, this is so weird. This just occurred to me. If I hadn’t spent 10 years watching someone work like a clean machine that inspires you, we might not even be on Zoom today. Actually, I should be an equity partner in BERO, but let’s put that aside.”

What you need to know about Tom Holland’s BERO non-alcoholic beer

Holland co-founded the non-alcoholic BERO series with CEO John Herman, previously of NutraVolt (a C4 Energy brand), and was backed by talent agency WME and Imaginary Ventures.

Initially offering Kingston Golden Pils, Edge Hill Hazy IPA, and Noon Wheat, BERO added Double Tasty West Coast Style IPA in June.

On BERO’s website, a 6-pack of BERO including the new Happy Coffee Draft costs $14, but you can purchase and subscribe to up to 24 packs. A 12-can variety pack costs $28.50.

What you need to know about Robert Downey Jr.’s Happy Coffee

Founded by Downey and entrepreneur Craig Dubitsky (co-founder of Hello Dental and EOS skincare products), Happy Coffee originally brought to market light, medium and dark coffee blends available in light roast, whole bean, instant and K-cup compatible pods in early 2024.

The brand also offers ready-to-drink vanilla, caramel, and mocha lattes and cold brew, and products are available at many stores including Target, Walmart, Kroger, CVS, Hy-Vee, Harris Teeter, Albertsons, Sprouts, Safeway, and Amazon.com.

On the Happy website, a 12-ounce pack of medium roast ground coffee is $12.99 and a box of 22 dark roast coffee pods is $17.99. A 12-can variety pack of Happy Latte (includes Limited Edition Chocolate Chip Cookie + Tate’s Bake Shop Latte) or Happy Cold Brew costs $35.88.

Mr. Cuomo has an advantage in the New York mayoral race, but is still behind Mr. Mamdani.

0

The Quinnipiac University poll comes less than a month from Election Day and just over two weeks before early voting begins in New York City.

play

NEW YORK – Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has a 10-point lead over Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral race, but still trails the 33-year-old state lawmaker by double digits, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University poll, released Oct. 9, comes just over a week after Mayor Eric Adams withdrew his bid for re-election. Presumably, New York City voters, of whom more than 1,000 cast their votes in early October, had largely made up their minds about the candidates ahead of the Nov. 4 election.

Mr. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, leads with 46% of likely voters, while Mr. Cuomo, who is running as an independent, has an approval rating of 33%, up from 23% in a September Quinnipiac poll before Mr. Adams resigned. Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Adams are both registered Democrats with independent voting slots. The latest poll shows Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa with a solid 15%.

The results showed Mamdani, a democratic socialist who is the city’s first Muslim mayor and first Asian American mayor, up just one point from the Sept. 10 poll. However, there is still a 13-point difference between him and Mr. Cuomo.

“While the numbers have changed, the contours of the race have not,” Mary Snow, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement. Mr. Snow said Mr. Cuomo had rallied supporters of Mr. Adams, but “Mamdani remains the front-runner by a double-digit margin.”

The poll was released nearly a month after Election Day and just over two weeks before early voting began. Mamdani trailed Cuomo for much of the June Democratic primary. Mamdani closed the gap in the final stages and won a decisive victory in the predominantly Democratic city, clinching the key nomination.

Cuomo’s campaign quickly seized control of the polls, saying in a statement that “the race is decisively changing.”

“The path is now clear. This is a two-man race between Andrew Cuomo and Zoran Mamdani,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said. “As voters learn about the stakes and Cuomo’s track record of rebuilding LaGuardia, revitalizing the MTA, expanding affordable housing, and keeping New York safe, they are rallying behind proven leadership.

Nearly three-quarters of likely voters said Mr. Cuomo had the experience to be mayor, compared with less than 40% for Mr. Mamdani, who was first elected to the state House in 2020, according to the poll.

Mamdani campaign spokeswoman Dora Pekek said in a statement that there was “genuine enthusiasm” for Mr. Cuomo’s campaign, backed by thousands of volunteers against the billionaire who are propping up Mr. Cuomo in a “last-ditch effort.”

The poll found that about 90% of likely voters for Mr. Mamdani were very or somewhat enthusiastic about the candidate, while 69% of likely voters for Mr. Cuomo said they were very or somewhat enthusiastic about the candidate.

“Every day, Zoran meets with voters in all five boroughs who are ready to turn the page on the broken politics of the past and build a city that everyone can afford,” Pekek said.

Hurdles remain for Cuomo

More than half of respondents said they had an unfavorable opinion of Mr. Cuomo. A similar number of respondents, 54%, said Mr. Cuomo is unethical. In 2021, Cuomo resigned in disgrace as governor amid allegations of sexual harassment (which he denies) and criticism of his management of nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Another hurdle is that Adams, who withdrew from the race on Sept. 28, will remain on the ballot as an independent candidate even though he is not seeking re-election.

Nearly half of respondents said Mr. Mamdani could reduce housing costs, compared with just a quarter for Mr. Cuomo. Voters who believed Cuomo was growing the city’s economy favored Mamdani by 41% and 35%, respectively.

The poll also asked voters about President Donald Trump. Voters were divided on whether Mamdani or Cuomo was the best person to represent New York City’s interests to the White House.

Quinnipiac’s Snow said both Democrats are trying to argue that it’s best to protect New York City from President Trump, but voters don’t see much difference between the parties on that point.

Sliwa, founder of the anti-crime vigilante group Guardian Angels, said in a statement that the only polls that matter are those on Election Day.

Donald Trump won’t win the Nobel Peace Prize

0

President Trump said he deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize for resolving various conflicts before the 2025 winner was announced.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s dream of becoming a Nobel Prize winner did not come true this year.

The Norwegian committee that decides the winners of the prestigious award awarded Trump the coveted peace prize in hopes that he would win for normalizing relations with Israel and some Middle Eastern countries.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that it has awarded the prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Colina Machado. The award recognizes efforts to promote democratic rights and achieve democratic transition in their countries.

During his first term, President Trump brokered a historic agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates that formalized bilateral relations. Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan signed the agreement, and President Trump had hoped to extend it to other countries.

The U.S. president was also nominated for the Peace Prize this year for various agreements he signed to resolve crises and conflicts, but the nominations were submitted past the committee’s Jan. 31 deadline for Cambodia and Pakistan.

The committee’s decision not to award Trump the award was not surprising. Earlier this year, he thought he would “never” win the prestigious award, which has only been given to four U.S. presidents.

President Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office on February 4 and said, “They will never give me the Nobel Peace Prize.” “It’s a shame. I deserve what I deserve and they will never give it to me.”

Asked by reporters during a roundtable discussion whether he thought he would receive the award on October 8, President Trump replied, “I don’t know.”

“Maybe they’ll find a reason not to give in to me, and they will,” said Trump, who has resolved seven conflicts during his presidency and said he is working toward ending the war in Gaza.

Previous recipients of the prestigious award include Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama.

On October 9, at a meeting in the Oval Office the night before the memorial service, President Trump angrily said, “Obama received an award for doing nothing.”

The Nobel Committee did not reveal the names of the candidates who were not selected, but prior to the announcement, it had announced that there were 338 candidates, of which 244 were individuals and the remaining 94 were organizations.

New York State Representative Claudia Tenney, a Republican, has publicly announced that she nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize for his work on the Abraham Accords. Prime Minister Netanyahu also said during a visit to the White House in July that he would nominate Trump for a role in the deal.

President Trump wants to expand the agreement to include Saudi Arabia.

Economists say California and New York hold the key to whether the U.S. falls into recession

0

play

If you’re wondering whether the U.S. economy is in recession, close to recession, or okay, you’re not alone.

The answer may depend on where you live, said Mark Zandi, an economist at Moody’s Analytics.

According to his analysis, 21 states and the District of Columbia, which account for about a third of U.S. economic activity, are already in recession. He said another 13 states, representing about another third of the economy, are stagnant, while the remaining 16 are growing.

Even if the country isn’t in a recession, if you live in a state that is or is on the brink of a recession, you’re probably already feeling the pinch.

“State-level data reveals why the U.S. economy is on the brink of recession,” Zandi said.

Why are some states in or near recession?

Most states in or near recession are producing goods, Zandi said. He said agriculture, mining and light industry were currently vulnerable, which was exacerbated by weakness in the transport sector.

But Zandi said, “The Washington, D.C. area stands out as a result of government job cuts.” The federal government is one of six industries he sees in recession. Others include transportation and distribution, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and construction.

“Naturally, the industries that are suffering the most are the most affected by higher tariffs, very restrictive immigration policies, and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) cuts,” he said.

Zandi said New England states generally have slower populations and therefore tend to have weaker economies than other regions even in good times.

Some states, such as Georgia and Illinois, also have high prices, which is hindering population growth, he said.

What is supporting other states?

Zandi said states like Texas and Florida have generally always fared well, in part because of their low taxes.

Penn State surprised him with a turnaround. “We’re doing well because of health care and education,” he says. “Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are running the train.”

Other growing industries include technology, state and local government, and real estate, he said.

Why are California and New York states to watch?

Zandi said California and New York are on track to avoid recession so far. If one side goes into recession, Zandi predicts the rest of the country will be dragged into it as well.

Together, these two states account for more than one-fifth of the nation’s economic growth. “Stability is extremely important to avoid a national economic downturn,” he said.

How likely is the U.S. to go into recession?

Most economists don’t expect a full-blown recession, defined by the National Bureau of Economic Research as a significant decline in economic activity that spreads throughout the economy and lasts more than a few months. The NBER is the official arbiter of when a recession occurs.

Zandi also said he was hopeful that a national recession could be avoided, but only at a whisper. “Fiscal and monetary policy should help the day and bring victory,” he said.

But for many Americans, he said, simply overlooking the recession won’t make them feel good.

“Firewalls are a redundancy,” Zandi said. “They’re still at very low levels. As long as they stay low they should be fine, but it’s unpleasant because companies are stopping hiring and cutting back on hours. They’re taking all the steps short of layoffs, and it’s going to be an unpleasant situation until they start hiring again.”

With 70% of the country currently in or approaching recession, Americans are already feeling depressed. The University of Michigan Consumer Survey found that sentiment in September compared to the previous month showed that “a wide range of consumers across age, income, and education groups are feeling pressure from both the prospect of higher inflation and the risk of weakening labor markets.”

Is the economy out of crisis?

Most economists revised their forecasts upward after economic growth in the April-June period came in at 3.8%, which was better than expected. Economists at Wells Fargo said strong consumer spending continues to support the economy.

But Zandi still sees the situation as volatile, with many risks that could upend the economy. He said these include:

  • Second week of government shutdown lasting 1-2 months
  • Major AI companies expect earnings to slow
  • People don’t like Trump being nominated to replace Fed Chairman Jerome Powell next year
  • Countries retaliate against US tariffs
  • If the Fed cuts interest rates too aggressively, inflation will rise.

Nobel Peace Prize goes to Venezuela’s Maria Colina Machado

0

OSLO, Nov 10 (Reuters) – Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Colina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her efforts to promote democratic rights and achieve a transition to democracy in her country, Norway’s Nobel Committee said on Friday.

Machado, a 58-year-old industrial engineer who lives in hiding, was blocked by a Venezuelan court in 2024 from running for president, preventing him from challenging President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power since 2013.

“When authoritarians seize power, it is critical to recognize the courageous defenders of freedom who stand up and resist,” the magazine said in a quote.

In the lead up to this year’s award, President Donald Trump repeatedly said publicly that he was worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The commission made the final decision ahead of Wednesday’s announcement of a ceasefire and hostage agreement under the first phase of President Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza.

Prior to the Nobel Prize announcement, Nobel experts also said it was highly unlikely that Trump would win the prize, as his policies were seen as dismantling the international world order cherished by the Nobel committee.

The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 11 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million, will be awarded in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish businessman Alfred Nobel, who founded the prize in his 1895 will.

Gen Z shoppers love buying ducks. why?

0

play

Emily Huang, a Gen Z shopper in Boston, likes to buy camo and name-brand alternatives for herself and her friends.

While studying abroad in Shanghai last year, she went to a market and bought a friend a wallet similar to those by Gucci, Prada and Goyard, but costing $10 to $20 instead of hundreds of dollars.

“There’s a lot of good ducks these days,” Huang, 22, told USA TODAY. Her friends said, “I got a new wallet. If you don’t look closely, it’s pretty close to the real thing.”

Gen Z shoppers are price sensitive

Gen Z shoppers like Huang take pride in purchasing alternatives (often referred to as “camo”) to expensive name brands and trendy items.

In a recent study by PwC, 82% of Gen Z shoppers said they plan to purchase camouflage this holiday season.

“For Gen Z, price is their love language. They were raised in an era of rising costs and value cost transparency,” Ali Furman, PwC consumer markets industry leader, told USA TODAY.

They’re a generation that loves a good duck, Furman said.

“They will celebrate camo culture on social media as a sign of being a smart shopper. In previous generations, they might have felt a little guilty about buying camo, or even felt bad about buying camo,” she says.

Fuhrman said Gen Z shoppers like to cheat on a variety of categories, including bags, cosmetics, apparel and shoes.

Gen Z friends like buying and receiving ducks

Huang, who now works as a salesman for an event rental company, said buying camo is practical and that many Gen Zers enjoy getting what looks like expensive name brands for less.

Huang said given his limited income, he could not afford to buy the real thing and was satisfied with the quality of most of the fakes he purchased.

“A lot of the camo that I actually participate in are things that I know are going to go out of style, or trends that are moving so fast that they’re not worth the[name brand]money,” she said.

Fans also bought camo shoes from Crocs, sunglasses from Prada, and the popular on-trend love doll camo, Lafufu.

She says some of her friends buy products that are perfect for famous brands and others that are so bad that they become a joke.

“If I were to buy a present for a friend, I would either buy a really bad duck or a really good duck. There’s no choice in between,” she said. “If it’s bad, it’s just funny. If it’s really good, you and I know, but who else knows?”

Dupe gives you access to trending items

Shikha Jain, partner and head of consumer and retail at commercial strategy consulting firm Simon Kuchar, said Kamo often targets Gen Z and millennial shoppers because they often want high-quality products without breaking the bank.

“You can get the same (product) by a high-end, luxury designer at an affordable price. It’s not necessarily a pure imitation, it’s an embrace of imitation,” Jain told USA TODAY. Mr. Jain also said counterfeit products are different from counterfeits because they are made to look very close to the real thing but are not trying to fool famous brands.

Camo allows cost-conscious shoppers to “see good value and be part of the trend,” she says. As some younger shoppers become more affluent, “ideally they’ll upgrade to that designer product and high-end products,” she says.

Jain said Gen Z shoppers are value-conscious and embrace thrifting, reselling and upcycling, becoming more mainstream. They are also excited to share financial prudence, she said.

Because of economic uncertainty and inflation, “it’s an accessibility issue for younger consumers and loyalty is waning,” Jain said. “They want to show that aesthetics, quality and taste are still accessible as opposed to expensive status items that would burn a hole in their pockets.”

Jackson Dart, Saquon Barkley named winners and losers of Giants upset win

0

play

  • Giants rookie QB Jackson Dart had a prime-time coming-out party and got plenty of help.
  • Can you name the last time the Eagles lost two straight?
  • Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley showed flashes on and off the field Thursday…even if it was just for a moment between the lines.

A month ago, while the Super Bowl 59 champion Philadelphia Eagles were still officially dominating the NFL, the New York Giants, who had the league’s toughest schedule (2024 opponents’ combined winning percentage of .574), were widely expected to be the underdogs league-wide.

When both teams began Week 6 of the 2025 season on Thursday night, they had only taken a slight step back toward average during that time, but now suddenly appear to be in a collision course after the Giants defeated their NFC East rivals 34-17 and Philadelphia suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since the end of the 2023 season.

But there was more going on at MetLife Stadium than the final result on the scoreboard. So let’s break down Thursday’s ancillary winners and losers.

winner

rematch

At a time when the Eagles just won their second Lombardi Trophy and the Giants have meant little since their last Super Bowl win nearly 14 years ago, it looks like these teams may finally have some new energy in the Border Wars. Even if you missed Thursday night’s Ambush of the Champions, you’ll be able to see it again soon against the Giants, who come to Philadelphia in Week 8.

giants rookie

This year, the G-Men were the first team to lose to the New Orleans Saints, but they bounced back in a big way thanks to the rookies responsible for getting the Eagles into the woods. First-round QB Jackson Dart, making his third NFL start, passed for 195 yards and a touchdown and ran for an additional 58 yards and an additional score. Fourth-round RB Cam Skatebo rushed 19 times for 98 yards and 3 TDs. And while the two combined for four of New York’s five turnovers in the loss to New Orleans, they had none on Thursday.

Dart and Skatebo also put on quite the exclamation point when they appeared on Prime Video’s postgame set that night.

“Push push”

The Eagles will obviously continue to make the most of their signature offensive play as long as it’s legal. That included an early 3-yard TD catch from tight end Dallas Goedert after using a modified formation in the passing game (which he also used in Tampa two weeks ago), followed by four consecutive runs starting from the 3-yard line for a touchdown in the second quarter.

brian burns

The Giants pass rusher tied a career high with two of the team’s three sacks of Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts.

Saquon Barkley?

The former Giants star and 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year stopped an 18-yard run, his longest of the season, on the first play of the game from scrimmage. Barkley also made a (temporary) touchdown-saving tackle in the fourth quarter after Hurts’ interception, but the Giants scored a few plays later. Finally, Prime Video also released its latest NFL documentary, “SAQUON,” on Thursday, so despite the loss and modest production, it was an eventful day for Barkley.

loser

Saquon Barkley?

The former Giants star and 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year had 17 runs of at least 20 yards last season, and he rushed for a league-high and career-best 2,005 yards on essentially one run per game during the regular season. After gaining 58 yards on Thursday night, he is on pace for 921 yards this season.

Russell Wilson

“Mr. Unlimited” was limited to two plays in the third quarter when Dart absorbed a body blow while running and had to go to the medical tent. Wilson handed off once and threw an ugly (and incomplete) pass on third down, forcing the Giants to punt, earning another boo-serenading from the Big Blue crowd. Freelance Jamis, Coach Daboll.

eagles defense

Philadelphia was the league’s top unit during its run to the crown last season, but surrendered a season-high 34 points, marred by the early departure of an apparently inactive DT Jalen Carter (heel) and top CB Quinyon Mitchell with a hamstring injury.

Philadelphia’s explosive power

In addition to Barkley’s run to start the game, the Eagles had three completions of 20 yards or more, the longest being a 36-yard run by tight end Dallas Goedert when the game was essentially decided. Not enough. Hurts missed a wide-open DeVonta Smith shot early in the third quarter for what was likely a game-changing 89-yard TD.

AJ… Dillon

Barkley’s backup provided an ugly reminder of why that’s his role. After the Giants led by 17 points with nearly 10 minutes left in the game, Dillon nullified the ensuing kickoff, relegating Philadelphia to its own 5-yard line. He fumbled at the Giants’ 25-yard line on the play after Goedert’s 36-yard catch, putting the game on ice seven snaps later. Games, sets and matches.

AJ…Brown

The Eagles’ receivers ended up having a solid night with six receptions for 80 yards between the lines. But Hurts’ postgame interview with reporters, in which he blandly denied any involvement in meetings with Barkley when this offense wasn’t going well, won’t help the suddenly worrying picture surrounding this team.

Jalen Hurts

In addition to missing Smith, he found Giants cornerback Cordale Flott in the fourth quarter for his first interception on his 305th regular-season pass, ending the league’s longest active clean sheet…and effectively ending the game.

Sister Jean dies at age 106. In memory of Reverend Loyola Chicago

0

The face of one of the greatest Cinderella teams in NCAA Tournament history is no longer with us.

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the longtime team chaplain at Loyola Chicago University, passed away on October 9, the university announced. She was 106 years old.

Catholic Nun gained national attention during the Ramblers’ improbable run to the Final Four in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, becoming only the fourth No. 11 seed to reach college basketball’s highest stage at the time. Sister Jean loved basketball and would pray for her team before games. It was bound to be televised before the upset victory. She also sent personalized emails to players, praising them after good games and encouraging them after bad ones.

“She means so much to this program and to the city of Chicago. Her aura is so bright. … She’s like no one else,” former player Donte Ingram said at the 2018 Final Four.

After Loyola Chicago’s buzzer-beating victory over Miami in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Sister Jean became an overnight celebrity, with photos and videos of her hugging players after the win going viral.

“Everything seemed to skyrocket,” she said of her sudden popularity at a packed Final Four press conference in San Antonio. “I can’t believe it. I wake up and say, ‘Is this real or a dream?'” And I say, “No, it’s really true.” …This is the most fun thing I’ve ever done in my life. ”

Her fame grew even more when the Ramblers advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 33 years and ultimately to the Final Four for the first time since 1963. That’s when the program won a national championship in a game that broke racial barriers. She had her own bobblehead and Nike shoes, but her face was on a T-shirt and socks as Loyola’s storybook run resonated beyond the sports world. In April, after running the bases for Loyola, she threw out the first pitch at the Chicago Cubs’ season opener and posed for photos with then-Ramblers coach Porter Moser, players, and then-Cubs manager Joe Maddon.

Sister Jean became a household name, but long before she became a household name, she was a fixture on Loyola’s campus on Chicago’s North Side. Sister Dolores Schmidt of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady came to Loyola in 1991 and became the team’s chaplain shortly thereafter. She had an office in the student center on campus, lived in the freshman dorms, and offered advice to visitors.

She had only recently officially retired from her job.

“In her many roles at Loyola for more than 60 years, Sister Jean was an invaluable source of wisdom and grace for generations of students, faculty, and staff,” Loyola President Mark C. Reed said in a statement. “While we feel a sense of sadness and loss, there is great joy in her legacy. Her presence was a profound blessing to our entire community, and her spirit lives on in thousands of lives.

“In her honor, we can hope to share with others the love and compassion that Sister Jean shared with us.”

Dodgers win NLDS due to error, thoughts on Phillies’ Orion Kirkeling

0

play

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers drank champagne, chugged Bud Lights and hugged each other shirtless Thursday night.

But when it comes to celebrations, the geriatric bingo parlor might have been more jubilant than the Dodgers’ National League Division Series championship party.

That night, the Dodgers felt even more relieved as they survived a heavyweight game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a dramatic 2-1 victory in the 11th inning, clinching the National League Division Series 3-1.

As a matter of fact, after a short party in the indoor batting cage, the Dodgers, let’s not spoil their fancy new clubhouse, say they were just too tired to properly celebrate.

They can do it in the next round, knowing that one more series win would earn them a return to the World Series.

And if they win the World Series again, becoming the first National League team to do so since the Big Red Machine of the Cincinnati Reds in 1975-76, we’ll see a huge hype that Hollywood would envy.

But for now, they just wanted to relax and soak in the moment, believing that by surviving this grueling series, they can beat anyone that comes their way.

“It was a war,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “It was a battle. It became an instant classic.”

It may take years for the Dodgers to fully realize what they accomplished, but on this night, their heads were still spinning.

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy said, “I don’t know how it would rank as a part of a game like that, but it would definitely rank high.” “Overtime at home against a really, really good team. Great pitching. Both teams were playing like there was no tomorrow.”

“It’s just crazy that it ended up being a missed throw by the pitcher throwing it back to home plate.”

For the Phillies, it was just an elimination game, but for the Dodgers, it felt like Game 7.

“You never want to go back to Philadelphia,” Muncy said. “You know it’s a very, very hostile environment. And you don’t want to mess it up. You don’t want to get on a plane.”

Both teams spent three and a half hours trading punches and leaving everything on the field. Starting pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Christopher Sanchez each pitched six innings, allowing just three hits for a shutout. The Dodgers turned to rookie Aki Sasaki, who pitched three perfect innings in one of the best relief performances in Dodgers postseason history. The Phillies brought in starter Jesus Luzardo, who hadn’t pitched as a reliever in four years, and got five outs.

The Dodgers’ quartet of Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez had three hits and seven strikeouts for 18 at bats, while Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper had one hit and four strikeouts for 14 at bats, shutting down the big stars.

Roberts went back and forth about why he took Glasnow out in the 6th inning even though the Phillies quickly scored a run, and Phillies manager Rob Thomson was questioned for intentionally walking Ohtani, who had one hit in 18 at-bats and nine strikeouts in this series, against Mookie Betts, who tied the game with a walk with the bases loaded.

The Dodgers also made the mistake of expressing sympathy for Phillies relief pitcher Orion Kirkeling.

“It’s cruel,” Roberts said. “He’s done it thousands of times, and I’m sure he was just focused on getting the batter there. (He) forgot about the outs and the situation.”

There were two outs and the bases loaded. Dodgers No. 9 batter Andy Pages, who was 1-for-24 in the series, got stuck on a 96.2 mph fastball and broke his bat. The ball bounced off to Kerkeling, who fumbled the ball and retrieved it with his bare hands.

“I was so mad at myself,” said Pages, who was still 55 feet from first base when Kirkeling picked up the ball. “I saw him grab it and then I saw him throw. But I couldn’t believe he didn’t throw to first base.”

No one else at Dodger Stadium could do it.

Panic began as Phillies catcher JT Realmuto pointed to first base and Pages was just over halfway through the lineup. Kirkering’s shot was home to Realmuto. Even if that pitch was a perfect strike, it would be too late for pinch runner Kim Hye-sung to come to bat.

“I ran for my life,” Kim said.

While the ball rolled to the backstop, the Dodgers rushed onto the field, still trying to figure out what exactly happened.

“When the pressure got on,” Kerkeling said, “I thought there was a faster throw to JT. There was a little faster throw than a crossbody (to first base). So I just made a (expletive) throw to the horse.”

“It’s baseball.

“(Something) will happen.”

Mr Thomson said: “He just got caught up in the moment a little bit,” Thomson said. “I feel for him because he carries everything on his shoulders. But we win as a team and we lose as a team.”

The Dodgers couldn’t believe it.

“It was just pure joy and a little bit of laughter,” Muncy said. “Because I didn’t know what happened. I saw everyone standing around and at first I thought it was a foul ball. But then it turned into pure joy.”

But even in the midst of clubhouse celebrations, they talked about the blunder in subdued tones, excited to have won the game but wanting to express sympathy for Kerkeling.

“I feel sick,” Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas said.

“I was talking to Freddie[Freeman]about it and we both talked about how bad it would be. He’s going to have to wait until next year to wash it off.”

But that’s a Phillies issue, and Thomson will be asked about job security at the end of the night.

“It’s out of my control, I don’t even think about it,” Thomson says. “Right now, there are 60 people in my workplace who have lost their hearts, so I’m thinking about that more than my job right now.”

“When this happens, it feels like the whole world has stopped. It’s just a thud.”

The Dodgers are looking to win a second ring while waiting for the winner of the Chicago Cubs-Milwaukee Brewers series, where they are heavy favorites.

The Dodgers weren’t that strong before this series, but with Glasnow proving he could pitch under postseason pressure as well as a lights-out closer’s debut that solved a ninth-inning woes, the Dodgers became a beast.

Sasaki was nothing short of sensational.

9 up, 9 down.

36 pitches, 26 strikes.

“Oh my god, you’re talking about the best starter ever to come out of Penn as far as I can remember,” Roberts said. “I can’t say enough about his development and contribution to this club. We are starting to see something really special in him…

“We’ve just scratched the surface of what he’s accomplished on the biggest stage. We couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Manager Roberts did not intend to use Sasaki until three innings, but he was so dominant and efficient that he continued to use him. While the Dodgers were packing up for Philadelphia, one mistake could have ended the game.

But he mowed them down in the eighth inning. Again for the 9th time. And tenth. He could have continued if Roberts had let him.

“It’s part of Japanese culture, it’s toughness,” Roberts said. “He’s been a star his whole life, and in that moment in the ninth inning, I felt like he was the best option to continue this game.”

“The toughness is definitely there and he embraces it.”

It was hard to believe that this was the same guy I had been wondering about all summer. Sasaki was the most sought after free agent on the market because his cost was only what the team had left in the international contract pool. For the Dodgers, it was just $6.5 million.

Sasaki started the first eight games of the season and posted a 4.72 ERA, but pitched more than five innings only twice. The 100 mph fastball he showed in Japan has faded, and his velocity has dropped by about 5 mph. He went on the disabled list with shoulder strain, struggled in the minors, and then had the Dodgers overhaul his pitching mechanics.

He returned in late September, agreed to a role in the bullpen, and performed well enough in two relief appearances to earn a spot on the postseason roster.

After his performance in the postseason, where he allowed just one hit in 5 1/3 innings, he looks like the second coming of Mariano Rivera.

“I felt like my fastball velocity was back to where it was before, and my fastball control was also where I wanted it to be. So I think that’s really helping with my offspeed. And because of that, I’m really confident in being able to attack in the zone,” Sasaki said.

Sasaki’s dominance has everyone on the Dodgers confident that they are a team that can win again, as they already know that their rotation with Ohtani, Blake Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the best in baseball.

“It was unbelievable,” said Glasnow, who grew up in the Los Angeles area and dreamed of pitching in the playoffs for the Dodgers. “When you think about what he went through earlier in the year, coming back and going to Triple-A and then coming out and pitching one of the worst innings I’ve ever seen in baseball, that shows you how strong he is and how much of a competitor he is.”

“He didn’t seem fazed by anything. He was throwing strikes and was super aggressive. Very impressive. We’re going to need him for the rest of the season.”

The Dodgers started the countdown with a 5-1 record this postseason.

With eight more wins, they will be back as World Series champions for the third time in six years.

“I feel great, but I know we have a lot of baseball to play,” Dodgers guard Enrique Hernandez said. Our goal is to win the World Series. The goal is not to win the NLDS. ”

Lottery player wins twice in 2025, netting more than $1 million in profits

As far as lottery games are concerned, striking while the iron is hot can result in a big win or two.

Just ask Sherry Suttles of Bridgeport, Connecticut. He won a $100,000 prize in the daily Cash 5 Lotto over the summer and took home a $1 million jackpot.

Suttles won the $1 million prize when he stopped by the Grand Package Store to pick up a few things, including Ultimate 7 scratch-off game tickets, the Connecticut Lottery announced on Tuesday, September 30. The store will also receive a $10,000 bonus for selling winning tickets.

“I almost fainted. I scratched the box and saw $1 million,” Suttles told the CT Lottery. “I had never seen a million dollars on a ticket before. When I picked up the phone and told my sister, she started screaming. She couldn’t believe it either.”

“I still can’t believe it.”

When state lottery officials caught up with Suttles, a regular CT Lotto player, he still couldn’t believe he’d won.

“I still can’t believe it,” Suttles told the camera, clutching the check. “I can’t believe that happened. But it did.”

Suttles plans to use the winnings to pay bills and donate to local churches. According to CT Lottory, the “overall odds” of winning Ultimate 7s are 1 in 3.47 and 1 in 72.1 for Cash5, or 1 in 12.1 for Cash5 with a kicker.

After Suttles won $1 million in the last “top prize”, the Ultimate Sevens, state lottery officials called off the competition. Winning tickets, including other major prizes in this game, must be verified by March 29, 2026.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid returns with 36 MPG and trail-ready AWD

  • Crosstrek Hybrid prices start at $33,995.
  • The Crosstrek Hybrid will go on sale in November.

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is back with better fuel economy and a host of other new features since 2023, when the automaker last offered hybrid power to its popular subcompact SUV.

The Hybrid is the top model in the Crosstrek model line. It has more power than the gas-only model, with 194 horsepower compared to 180 horsepower.

The Crosstrek competes with small SUVs such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Encore GX, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Volkswagen Taos.

Hybrids are rare among subcompact AWD SUVs. The Corolla Cross is the only hybrid among Crosstrek competitors.

Crosstrek prices start at $26,995, with the hybrid joining the lineup for $33,995. All prices exclude $1,420 destination charge.

I tested a well-equipped Hybrid Sport on country roads and wooded trails in rural Oregon. My test vehicle had a $33,995 sticker.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek trim levels and prices

  • Basic: $26,995
  • Premium: $27,995
  • Sports: $30,625
  • Limited: $32,995
  • Wilderness: $33,795
  • Sport Hybrid: $33,995
  • Limited Hybrid: $34,995

Driving impression

The Crosstrek has one of the most spacious interiors in its class. It is comfortable and well-equipped, with convenient storage space and cargo capacity.

Subaru’s rural test site wasn’t suitable for the stop-and-go city driving that hybrids excel at, but the Crosstrek’s extra power was evident on winding mountain roads.

The route included some pretty challenging off-road trails that I think would hinder other subcompact SUVs. The Crosstrek Hybrid’s standard AWD handled everything with ease.

This system features a mechanical connection between the engine and the rear axle, unlike the Corolla Cross, which has a separate electric rear axle. Crosstrek planning manager Chris Charles said Subaru’s layout provides excellent off-road performance. I would never drive a Corolla Cross on that road, but the Crosstrek’s performance was convincing.

The Crosstrek’s design also allows it to enter and exit deep potholes without scraping the front or rear.

As with all Subarus, a large center-mounted touch screen manages most of the Crosstrek’s systems. A few more buttons would improve usability and reduce distractions, but it’s not the worst system on the road.

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Key Features

  • all wheel drive
  • 1,500 lb towing capacity
  • 8.7 inches ground clearance
  • Continuously variable transmission.
  • 18 inch wheels
  • Bicycle and pedestrian detection
  • emergency steering assist
  • automatic high beam
  • Rear passenger reminder
  • Standard push button start
  • Standard dual-zone climate control with occupant sensors and voice controls

Why buy a 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid?

The Crosstrek Hybrid is attractive, capable, and efficient. The hybrid drivetrain provides a welcome power boost in addition to attractive fuel economy.

The interior is spacious, with plenty of space for shopping and pets.

Few, if any, subcompact SUVs can match the Crosstrek’s capabilities on backcountry trails.

US to send up to 200 troops to monitor ceasefire in Gaza

WASHINGTON — The United States is preparing to send up to 200 troops to help monitor the ceasefire and support Gaza stabilization forces, according to a U.S. official familiar with the plans.

“Up to 200 U.S. military personnel already stationed at Centcom will be tasked with monitoring the Israeli peace agreement and will work with other international forces on the ground,” White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a statement.

The military is stationed in places such as Israel and serves as a monitor to monitor for violations. U.S. troops have no plans to enter Gaza, officials said.

The role of U.S. Central Command will primarily be to oversee a joint task force that will likely include Egyptian, Qatari, Turkish and UAE forces, and to assist in deconfliction with the Israeli Defense Forces currently deployed in Gaza, the official added.

Details of the deployment were still being worked out on October 9, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government formally approved the first phase of a peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump.

Dodgers knock out Phillies on error in overtime thriller: Highlights

0

play

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers limped through in-season rehearsals, looking like they were just a pedestrian team and might be vulnerable in the postseason.

Sucker.

The Dodgers are threatening to start up again when the calendar flips to October and go where no National League team has gone in nearly 50 years.

Consecutive World Series wins.

The Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in 11 extra innings on Thursday, winning the National League Division Series for the first time in four games and advancing to the National League Championship Series, where they will face the winner of the Milwaukee Brewers-Chicago Cubs series on Monday.

It was an epic pitching battle, but it ended in perhaps the biggest blunder to end a postseason game since New York Mets first baseman Bill Buckner’s blunder in the 1986 World Series.

Phillies relief pitcher Orion Kirkeling plays against Andy Pages with two outs and bases loaded in the 11th inning.thappeared to come out of a jam when he guided a soft bouncer. Kirkeling fumbled the ball, but still had enough time to catch Pages at first base.

Instead, he panicked. It’s an important time.

Kerkeling inexplicably threw home, and the ball went over catcher JT Realmuto, who was trying to throw the pitcher to first base.

As the ball rolled to the backstop, the Dodgers were rushing onto the field to celebrate their return to the National League CS.

This is the first time that a deciding game in a postseason series has been decided by an error.

The Dodgers seem to be peaking at the right time, winning 10 of their last 11 games dating back to the final week of the regular season.

And listening to the Dodgers, it feels like they’re just getting started.

“I think it’s still in gear,” Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy said. “I don’t think we’re quite at the level that we can get to. That’s not to say we’re there, and it’s not to say we’re not there. But I still think there’s a whole other level that we’re not there yet.”

No one knows how good the Dodgers will be for the rest of October, but this team is so much better than it was over the summer that I always believed this day would finally come.

“We knew who we were as a team all year long, and even though there were times when we weren’t at our best, we believed in who we were,” Muncy said. … We’ve had some tough times this year, but no one in the clubhouse was fazed. And the reality is, I think we had a group of players there that had an amount of experience and talent that gave us confidence that we could get through it. ”

To be honest, there was never any question of the Dodgers playing in October. They have reached the postseason for 13 consecutive seasons and have won 12 National League West titles during that time.

The question was how they would fare once they made the playoffs.

“Obviously every year in spring training,” Muncy said. In reality, only a handful of teams can say that’s a realistic goal. And we are part of that every year.

“So, for us, making the postseason is never a given, it’s never going to happen. But we expect to get here. And when you get to this point, it’s a whole other level. And we’ve had a few years where once we get to this point, we have a little bit of a hard time turning on. We finished the regular season, and we just couldn’t find a way to turn on at this point in the year.”

“I feel like we’ve found that path the last few years, and I think that’s what’s driving us.”

Admittedly, this heavyweight matchup against the Phillies wasn’t easy. Both teams believed this could have been two rounds early in the World Series.

The game brought back memories of Steve Carlton and Don Drysdale, as well as the pitching of Phillies aces Christopher Sanchez and Tyler Glasnow. It was a classic pitching battle between Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow and Phillies ace Christopher Sanchez, each pitching six shutout innings, but it was a second time for the manager.

The move, which will no doubt be second-guessed heading into the winter, was a decision by manager Rob Thomson in the eighth inning that backfired.

A tired Sanchez walked No. 7 batter Alex Cole in the seventh inning, then allowed a sharp single to Enrique Hernandez and retired. Thomson targeted closer Joan Duran for a possible eight-out save.

As Duran gave first baseman Bryce Harper a bouncer with two outs and runners on second and third base, Thomson made a move that would have made a radio talk show host scream in his head.

He chose to intentionally walk Shohei Ohtani.

Under most circumstances, that would make perfect sense, especially considering Ohtani is 2-for-4 home run off Duran in his career.

This is not a normal situation.

Ohtani has had an abysmal record this series, with just one hit and eight strikeouts in 17 at-bats.

Still, Thomson was well aware of his resume and believed Ohtani could break out at any time, so he intentionally gave Duran a walk to load the bases.

Mookie Betts made him pay. Duran gave Betts a walk on a full count, then tied the score at one with a 161 mph fastball thrown high on the fourth pitch.

The move saved Dodgers manager Dave Roberts from pulling Tyler Glasnow after pitching six great innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight. Glasnow threw just 83 pitches, but Roberts wanted a fresh arm and called up Emmett Sheehan, who was a starter throughout the regular season but was in the bullpen for the postseason.

Realmuto met him with a leadoff single to center field. Sheehan gave a quick bouncer to Edman at second base, who flipped the ball back to shortstop Mookie Betts for one out, but Sheehan was late covering first base and missed the return ball from Betts. The ball went out of play and Kepler reached second base.

Nick Castellanos was 1-for-13 home run, but Sheehan’s double down the left field line gave Kepler the lead and made him atone for his mistake.

The lead continued until Betts walked in the bottom of the seventh inning, when rookie Aki Sasaki retired all nine batters he faced, handing the game over to the bullpen.

For the Phillies, Duran pitched 1 2/3 innings and Matt Stram pitched one inning before being replaced by starter Jesus Luzardo, who was originally scheduled to pitch in Game 5.

Thomson wanted to secure a Game 5.

It never happened, thanks to a fiasco that will forever be remembered in baseball lore.

Follow Nightengale on X: @Bnightengale

The schedule for Thursday’s game is as follows:

In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Dodgers had two outs and the bases loaded, and Andy Pages hit a come-from-behind hit to Orion Kerkeling, but Kerkeling threw the ball home, but it was an airmail and allowed the winning run.

Alex Bashear started for the Dodgers in the 11th inning, and with one out, he gave up a walk to Bryce Harper. Alec Bohm then hit a ball to the edge of the warning track in center field, surprising the crowd, but it fell as two outs. Beshear caused a wild pitch on his first pitch to pinch hitter Harrison Bader, advancing Harper to second base, but Beshear eventually broke a 10-pitch stalemate and struck out Bader, ending the top of the 11th inning.

Game 2 starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo took the mound in the 10th inning and immediately struck out Shohei Ohtani with three pitches. The left-handed pitcher struck out Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez to end the inning and send the game into the 11th inning.

Dodgers rookie Roki Sasaki took out the Phillies in the top of the 10th inning, giving up three scoreless innings and retiring all nine batters he faced. Jesus Luzardo will pitch for the 10th time for the Phillies.

In Game 4, the Dodgers and Phillies will go to overtime. Roki Sasaki played until the second inning of the ninth inning and defeated the Phillies, retiring all six batters he faced. Matt Stram started for the Phillies and pitched until 10 innings without allowing a run.

Major League Baseball’s overtime format is different in the playoffs than in the regular season, with the “ghost runner” who starts at second base being eliminated if a game goes beyond the ninth inning.

Unlike the previous six months of baseball, there will be no free runners in extra innings of the postseason.

For the Dodgers, Aki Sasaki pitched eighth and forced the Phillies to retire in order. For Philadelphia, Joan Duran returned and with two strikeouts including a ground ball, he defeated the Dodgers and brought the game to the ninth inning, tied at 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Christopher Sanchez replaced Joao Duran with runners on first and second base, and Phillies relief pitcher Andy Pages had two outs. However, manager Rob Thomson chose to intentionally walk Shohei Ohtani in order to force Mookie Betts to load the bases. The former MVP moved the count well and drew a walk to tie the game.

Duran struck out Teoscar Hernandez to get out of the inning, sending the game into the eighth tied at one.

After Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow pitched six scoreless innings, Emmett Sheehan relieved him in the top of the seventh inning. He allowed a lead-off single to JT Realmuto and then got the first out on a fielder’s choice by Max Kepler, but the ball flew out of bounds as the Dodgers attempted a double play, forcing Kepler to second base.

Nick Castellanos then hit an RBI double in front of third base, bringing home the game’s first run.

However, Sheehan retired Briston Stott and Trea Turner and placed Castellanos at second, making the game 1-0 going into the seventh inning.

Tyler Glasnow and Christopher Sanchez were hitless through the first five innings, with both teams allowing just two hits. Sanchez threw just 62 pitches, no walks, and four strikeouts.

With runners on first and third base and two outs due to an error by third baseman Alec Bohm, the Phillies’ starting pitcher grounded out Mookie Betts to end the bottom of the third inning.

Game 4 was scoreless until the 4th inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Mookie Betts led off with a single against Christopher Sanchez, then Tommy Edman hit a line drive to left field that looked like he was going to hit the gap until Max Kepler made a nice diving catch. Sanchez then grounded out Will Smith into an inning-ending double play.

Game 4 was being played at Dodger Stadium, and the Phillies threatened in the top of the first inning with Kyle Schwarber’s one-out double. But Tyler Glasnow grounded out Bryce Harper, walked Alec Bohm, and then struck out Brandon Marsh.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers are not using closer Tanner Scott this postseason and no longer trust him to pitch in key situations, so they removed him from their postseason roster Thursday before Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers received permission from MLB to remove him from the roster and replace him with left-handed reliever Justin Robleski.

Scott, who signed a four-year, $72 million free agent contract, will not be eligible to pitch for the Dodgers until the World Series if the Dodgers advance. Scott, who only briefly warmed up for the National League Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds, suffered an “abscess incision” in his lower body, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced was a minor surgery. — Bob Nightengale

New York Democratic Party rallies in support of Letitia James after bank fraud indictment

0

Mr. James’s defense by fellow New York Democrats stands in sharp contrast to the prosecution of New York Mayor Eric Adams just over a year ago.

play

New York Democrats rallied around state Attorney General Letitia James, who was indicted in federal court in Virginia.

The indictment, returned Oct. 9, alleges that James committed bank fraud related to a mortgage loan he received to purchase a home in Virginia. President Donald Trump, the man James filed her lawsuit in 2022, had asked her to file weeks earlier.

James, 66, a Democrat who lives in Brooklyn, said she is not intimidated by what she calls “baseless accusations.” Her allies in Albany, Washington DC, and New York City were equally powerful.

“What we are seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Department of Justice to punish those who hold those in power accountable,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in an X post.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a fellow Brooklyn Democrat, said James “has bravely led and successfully challenged the Trump administration’s lawless and deeply unpopular overreach.”

“She has always followed the facts, applied the law and been guided by the Constitution,” Jeffries said in a statement.

State Republican Party: “No one is above the law”

Meanwhile, the New York Republican Party echoed Lindsey Harrigan, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, in announcing the charges: “No one is above the law.”

“For years, Letitia James has unlawfully used her office as a weapon to conduct a political witch hunt against her Democratic political opponents, particularly President Donald J. Trump,” said Rep. Elise Stefanik, an upstate New York Republican who is challenging Hochul for governor.

Three years ago, Mr. James sued Mr. Trump, his companies, and some family members, alleging that they fraudulently inflated the value of Mr. Trump’s assets to get better loans and insurance terms. A state judge agreed and ordered Trump to pay a fine of approximately $454 million. The Manhattan-based appeals court found the penalties inappropriate, but maintained certain business restrictions. James was appealing that decision.

In September, former U.S. Attorney Eric Siebert for the Eastern District of Virginia reportedly concluded there was not enough evidence to charge James. Mr. Siebert resigned after President Trump demanded his removal. Mr. Harrigan, the president’s former personal attorney, immediately replaced Mr. Siebert.

“This is what tyranny looks like,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Brooklyn Democrat, told the X-Post. “President Trump is using the Department of Justice as a personal attack dog, targeting Attorney General Tish James for the ‘crime’ of prosecuting and winning fraud charges.”

New York Democratic Party’s response differs from prosecution of Mayor Eric Adams

The rush by fellow New York Democrats to defend James stands in sharp contrast to another federal indictment, that of New York Mayor Eric Adams.

In 2024, under the Biden administration, federal prosecutors indicted Adams on corruption charges, which the mayor denied. Democrats called for his resignation, especially after the Trump Justice Department intervened to dismiss the case.

As with James’ prosecution, federal prosecutors also resigned over the case. But in Adams’ case, prosecutors resigned in exchange for Adams dropping criminal charges in exchange for aiding immigration enforcement. Adams denied there was an agreement to dismiss the case.

City Hall officials did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment on James’ indictment.

Her indictment comes less than a month before New York’s November 4 mayoral election. Mr. Adams recently withdrew his likely bid for re-election.

James was investigating independent mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo when the former Democratic governor was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women. A spokesperson for Cuomo’s campaign did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

State Rep. Zoran Mamdani, a front-runner in the mayor’s race and the likely Democratic candidate, sided with James against “baseless accusations” of “political vendetta.”

“The Attorney General has supported us many times,” he said in a statement. “We have something for her.”

Who are the 20 Israeli hostages still alive in Gaza?

0

These hostages could soon return home after Israel and Hamas agreed to implement the first phase of President Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

play

Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a peace deal aimed at ending the two-year conflict and releasing in the coming days a group of remaining Israeli hostages captured in an October 2023 terrorist attack.

A bipartisan agreement announced by President Donald Trump on October 8 calls for the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours of the agreement in exchange for the release of Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

The announcement did not give an official release date, but a senior White House official told USA TODAY that release of the hostages is likely to begin on October 13, but they could be returned sooner. On October 9, President Trump told a Cabinet meeting with his top advisers that the hostages could be released “on Monday or Tuesday” on October 13 or 14.

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu read out the names of the 20 hostages the government said were still alive. Among them are several music festival attendees, two sets of brothers, dual Israeli citizens, and two Israeli soldiers.

These are hostages who are believed to be still alive after more than two years in captivity.

Matan Angrest, 22 years old

Angrest, an Israeli Defense Forces soldier, was taken from Kibbutz Nahal Oz during an attack on October 7, 2023. His mother, Anat Anrest, is one of dozens of family members of the remaining hostages who have been outspoken in their advocacy for their release. In late September, she joined other hostages’ families in protesting in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Jerusalem calling for a ceasefire.

“Our loved ones in Gaza are being shelled by the Israeli Defense Forces on the orders of the prime minister,” she said.

Gari Burman and Ziv Burman, 28 years old

The twin brothers were taken from Kfar Azha Kibbutz during the attack.

Their brother, Rylan Berman, told USA TODAY in November 2023 that they are fun-loving twins who light up every room they enter and have traveled the world for their work in the music industry.

Elkanah Beaubot, 36 years old

Bobot was taken from a music festival in Reims, southern Israel, and was the first to take several others in the October 7 attack, which also killed hundreds of other festival-goers.

According to an August post about X from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, he is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and a son. In March 2025, Hamas released a video showing Bobot and another hostage, Yosef Chaim Ohana, alive.

Rom Braslavski, 21 years old

Blaslavsky was working as a security guard at the Nova Music Festival when he was taken. The festival was held about five miles from the Gaza border and coincided with the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot.

Nimrod Cohen, 20 years old

Cohen, an IDF soldier, was abducted from Kibbutz Nahal Oz. He has a twin sister and enjoys gaming, music and traveling, according to the American Jewish Committee.

Ariel Cunio (28 years old) and David Cunio (35 years old)

Both brothers were kidnapped along with their partners from their home in Nir Oz, a rural area near the Gaza border.

Ariel Cunio and his partner Albel Yehud were taken away. Yehud was released on January 30 along with several other hostages. In a Sept. 5 Facebook post to the advocacy group Bring Them Home Now, he said their home was “our private paradise, and from that wonderful place we were brutally taken into the depths of hell in Gaza.”

David Cunio was kidnapped along with his wife Sharon Cunio and young twin daughters Yuri and Emma. Sharon Kunio and her daughters were released in November 2024.

Guy Gilboa Dalal, 24 years old

Guy Gilboa-Dala was taken hostage at the Nova Music Festival, where he and his brother Gal were attending. In the confusion, the two were separated.

“Time is passing in a very strange way,” Gall said in an October 6 article in the Guardian. “In some ways I feel like I was with him yesterday in Nova, and in some ways I feel like I haven’t seen my brother in over 100 years.”

Evyatar David, 24 years old

David is one of the members from the Nova Music Festival.

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), along with several synagogues and Jewish organizations across Atlanta, “adopted” David’s case around May 2025 and advocated for his immediate release. Other members of Congress and Jewish organizations across the country have also chosen to highlight individual hostages by “adopting” them or meeting their families as part of a concerted effort to demand their release.

“Evyatar is 24 years old. He loves playing the guitar, loves his family and loves life,” Ossoff said in a statement.

Maxim Hertic, 37 years old

According to France 24 newspaper, Herkin is a dual Russian-Israeli citizen who immigrated to Israel from Ukraine with his mother.

The newspaper reported that before Harkin was taken from the Nova Festival, he wrote a letter to his mother saying, “Everything is fine. I’m going home.”

Etan Horn, 38 years old

According to the BBC, Horne is an Israeli of Argentine descent and worked as an educator before the attack. He was taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz along with his brother Yea Horn. Iea was released from confinement on February 15th.

Segev Calfon, 27 years old

Calfon was also attending a music festival when he was taken. The Times of Israel said he was the second of three children and was working as a production manager at a bakery and studying finance before his arrest.

The Century Abraham Barmat, 23 years old

Kuperstein was working as a bouncer at the Nova Music Festival on October 7, 2023. The Hostage and Missing Families Forum, an advocacy group working to free all the hostages, said Kuperstein helped other victims survive the attack before being abducted by Hamas militants.

Omri Milan, 48 years old

Milan was abducted from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, less than a mile from the Gaza border. He was separated from his wife, Rishay Milan Ravi, and their two daughters during a raid on their home and was captured by Hamas militants.

Eshitan Abraham Mor

Mol was also working as a security guard at the Nova Music Festival when we were kidnapped. He lived in Jerusalem before the attack and is one of eight children, the Times of Israel reported.

Joseph Chaim Ohana, 25 years old

Like many other hostages, Ohana was attending a music festival during the Hamas-led attack. According to Bring Them Home Now, he was born into a religious family and has two siblings.

Aron Orel, 24 years old

Oher, who has German, Serbian and Israeli nationality, was attending the Nova Music Festival at the time of the attack on October 7, 2023. The Times of Israel reports that he is a pianist and his family claims he is blind in one eye due to injuries sustained in the attack following a recent video released by Hamas.

Abinathan Oru, 32

Or being kidnapped at the Nova Music Festival with his girlfriend, Noah Algamani. After eight months in captivity, she was rescued by Israeli forces in June 2024.

women of the resurrection

Zangauker was captured with his girlfriend, Ilana Griszewski, who chronicled the incident in a May 2025 column for USA TODAY.

“A bullet went through the door, so we jumped out of the vault window. We ran in different directions. We lost sight of Matan,” she said. “After a while, I was captured.”

Griszewski was freed during a ceasefire in November 2023, but wrote in an op-ed for USA TODAY that he won’t be able to fully recover until Zangaukar is also freed.

Pennsylvania’s Radical Constitution: An Experiment in the Making

0

This essay is part of the 50 states series About the country’s constitution. We asked state experts to dig into each state’s constitution, tell its history, identify its characteristics, and summarize its most important elements for our readers.

If the U.S. Constitution was the product of deliberations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s constitution is the product of a revolution in the streets. Born in 1776 at the height of the Rebellion, Pennsylvania’s founding documents marked a decisive break from colonial rule and provided an unapologetically radical blueprint for democratic life. The Union’s enduring legacy of constitutional experimentation, from its early embrace of popular sovereignty and expansive rights to the role of the modern judiciary as a bulwark of democracy, shows that Pennsylvania’s evolving constitutional tradition reflects and redefines the trajectory of American democracy.

Historical development and contemporary framework

Pennsylvania’s first constitution, drafted and adopted between July and September 1776, was a significant departure from colonial orthodoxy. It was not simply a reaction to British tyranny, but a radical vision of popular sovereignty and participatory democracy, filled with the revolutionary fervor of the time.

Heavily influenced by the works of Thomas Paine common senseWilliam Penn’s Quaker heritage, and the early influence of Benjamin Franklin, the 1776 Constitution established a unicameral legislature, abolished the office of governor, and placed faith in an active citizenry with broad voting rights and annual elections. The report highlighted the state’s efforts to check power from below by introducing a Censorship Council, an elected body tasked with assessing the government’s compliance with the constitution every seven years. By many accounts, and as Richard Ryerson has put it, Pennsylvania became “perhaps the most important participatory democracy in the world.”

Among its most enduring contributions was the concept of constitutional supremacy, the idea that the constitution is superior to ordinary law and is binding on both public officials and the people. This idea, which originated in Pennsylvania, later became a founding principle of the U.S. Constitution. As former Chief Justice Robert Nix Jr. put it, the intense debate over the framework for Pennsylvania’s creation “undoubtedly influenced constitutional thought at the time the federal Constitution was written.”

The 1776 Constitution lasted until 1790, but widespread dissatisfaction with the imbalance of power between branches led to the adoption of more traditional government structures, including bicameralism and a stronger executive branch. Most of the 1790 Constitution remained in place until the adoption of the current Constitution in 1968, through amendments. The current constitution officially replaced the 1874 version with the aim of modernizing governance and clarifying its structure.

Bill of Rights and Affirmative Protection

Pennsylvania’s 1776 Declaration of Rights predated the federal Bill of Rights by more than a decade and set the standard for a broad view of individual liberty. It guaranteed a broader voting base, limited by tax status rather than property ownership, and mandated transparency in the legislative process. Today, the Union continues to take the lead in codifying positive rights that the U.S. Constitution omits.

Although the federal constitution contains no such language, Pennsylvania’s constitution explicitly guarantees the right to vote. The federal Free and Equal Elections Clause has emerged as an important doctrinal tool for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, especially in the face of contemporary threats to election integrity. As I have argued, this provision has recently served as a bulwark against legislative efforts to undermine democratic participation. This language has been liberally interpreted to curb Congressional overzealousness in election administration, including extending deadlines for mail-in ballots, allowing inaccurate or undated ballots to be counted, prohibiting overly restrictive mail-in policies, and clarifying residency requirements for poll watchers. This liberal interpretation of the Free and Equal Elections Clause has helped prevent disenfranchisement of millions of voters in Pennsylvania.

In addition to the right to vote, the Pennsylvania Constitution guarantees gender equality through Article 1, Section 28, which states: “Equality of rights under the laws of Pennsylvania shall not be denied or abridged on account of the sex of a person.” In recent years, courts have begun to address this and other provisions to address issues surrounding reproductive autonomy. in 2024 Allegheny Reproductive Health Center v. Pennsylvania Department of Human Servicesfor example, the court held in a 3-2 decision that the state constitution’s Equal Rights Amendment prohibits laws that burden one sex, including prohibitions on Medicaid coverage of abortion. The court ruled that regulating conditions unique to one sex, such as pregnancy, constitutes sex discrimination under the state constitution.

This case shows how the Constitution continues to adapt to modern rights struggles.

innovation and inclusion

The Pennsylvania Constitution has long also served as a vehicle for experimentation. From the early repeal of the Bureau to the adoption of the Environmental Rights Amendment in 1971, this document reflects a continued evolution toward comprehensiveness and responsiveness. State courts have similarly embraced this ethos, transforming into “new laboratories of democracy” where judges experiment with innovative constitutional theories to protect voting rights and democratic norms. Its innovation also extends to judicial responsibilities. Unlike federal judges, Pennsylvania judges are elected by the people, are based on popular legitimacy, and are subject to direct democratic feedback. This system creates an institute democratically accountable for adjudicating constitutional, political, and policy decisions.

Governance and jurisdiction

The 1776 Constitution gave overwhelming powers to the legislature and deliberately weakened the judiciary and executive branch. Judges serve seven-year terms, but they can be removed at any time for misconduct. This imbalance proved unsustainable and led to the adoption of the 1790 Constitution, which introduced a bicameral parliament and a stronger executive. Today, the pendulum has swung sharply as Pennsylvania’s judiciary wields greater policy-making authority, from overseeing the administration of justice to intervening in election crises. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, courts have intervened to extend voting deadlines and interpret election laws in ways that preserve voter access.

correction

Pennsylvania’s constitution is much more volatile than the federal constitution. Initially, constitutional amendments were the purview of the Censorship Council, which proposed amendments every seven years. The modern system now allows for amendments through legislative proposals. Article XI allows for a legislatively referred amendment process, giving the General Assembly exclusive authority to propose and pass amendments by a simple majority vote, and amendments must survive voter ratification through simple majority approval. This flexibility produced a living national constitution that was continuously shaped by evolving values and corresponding judicial interpretations. Recent amendments and rulings have relied heavily on the Free and Equal Suffrage Clause to fend off efforts to disenfranchise voters. Notably, recent proposals such as Marsy’s Law, a victims’ rights amendment that was approved by voters in 2019 but later blocked on procedural grounds, demonstrate both the vigor and legal complexity of Pennsylvania’s amendment process.

The battle between judicial interpretation and democracy

Nothing better illustrates Pennsylvania’s modern constitutional institute than a recent incident. League of Women Voters v. CommonwealthIn 2018, the state Supreme Court invalidated the 2011 Republican-drawn congressional map as partisan gerrymandering and unconstitutional based on the Free and Equal Suffrage Clause. The decision was based on proper and independent state grounds and was insulated from federal review following the 2019 U.S. Supreme Court decision. Lucho vs. Common Cause Federal courts could not hear partisan gerrymandering claims.

The court’s actions didn’t stop there. It issued several important rulings during the 2020 election cycle. in Pennsylvania Democratic Party vs. Boock Barthe court extended the deadline for voting by mail, citing pandemic-related mail delays and emphasizing the need to “prevent voter disenfranchisement” under the state constitution’s Elections Clause. in Re: Canvas for absentee and mail-in votingthe court ruled that minor ballot defects should not automatically lead to the vote being thrown out, reinforcing a commitment to an inclusive election process.

Perhaps the most significant decision was made in 2020. Kerry v. Commonwealthwhen the Republican candidate tried to invalidate Act 77, the bipartisan law that would have allowed universal mail-in voting, after he had already lost the election. The court dismissed the case with prejudice, with Justice David Vecht warning that the challengers were “playing a dangerous game at the expense of all Pennsylvania voters.” These decisions demonstrate the evolving role of courts, not only as arbiters of constitutional meaning but also as institutional bulwarks against the erosion of democracy.

• • •

The Pennsylvania Constitution was born out of a revolution, and it remains revolutionary. Its legacy is one of experimentation: structural, doctrinal, and democratic. From its radical origins in 1776 to its role in election litigation in 2020, this document and the courts that interpret it have evolved into an architecture for upholding democratic norms. As federal courts increasingly retreat from protecting voting rights, state constitutions and state courts, particularly Pennsylvania, are leading the way in protecting and redefining American democracy. This is not only the story of Pennsylvania’s constitution, but also the future of the nation written in a federal laboratory.

With one-third of the 2025 NFL regular season remaining, Week 6 begins tonight.

The New York Giants (1-4) will host the Philadelphia Eagles (4-1), who suffered their first loss of the season against the defending Super Bowl champions against the Denver Broncos. The reigning champions squandered a 17-3 lead in the fourth quarter when Denver scored 18 straight points in the final 13 minutes to defeat the Birds. Philadelphia will look to get back on track against Big Blue at MetLife Stadium.

Week 6’s edition of “Thursday Night Football” promises to be entertaining as these divisional rivals are scheduled to battle it out in what’s known as the “I-95 Game.”

Like the Eagles, the Giants blew a double-digit lead last Sunday against the previously winless New Orleans Saints and ultimately suffered a disappointing loss. The Giants jumped out to a 14-3 lead on the road, but gave up 23 points and suffered a 26-14 loss.

The Giants struggled with turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble by Jackson Dart, who was making his second start in NFL history. Tonight will be the 25th overall pick’s first prime-time game, and he will look to provide the inspiration the Giants and Brian Daboll need.

Saquon Barkley is off to a pedestrian start after rushing for 2,000 yards last season. He has just six carries in the Eagles’ most recent games and averaged just over 50 yards through the first five weeks of 2025. Last season, in Barkley’s first matchup against his former team, he rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year was placed on the injury report earlier this week, but it appears he will be back at full strength Thursday night.

Philadelphia’s other offensive star, AJ Brown, got off to an inauspicious start. Can Alpha wide receiver get back on track against the Giants’ secondary?

This is the first of two games over the next three weeks between the NFC East foes. Can the Eagles get back in the win column, or can the Giants suffer their first losing streak since December 2023?

USA TODAY Sports will bring you live updates, highlights and more from Thursday night’s Week 6 game between the Giants and Eagles below.

The Giants’ rookie running back brought New York’s offense closer to the goal line with a 12-yard run at second base and a 10-yard run from the Eagles’ 13-yard line. He made his second effort one play later, giving the Giants a two-point advantage over the Eagles.

Jude McAtamney’s extra point gave the Giants a lead with 7:56 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles’ first-round draft pick a year ago was ruled out of tonight’s game with a hamstring injury. Veteran Adoree’ Jackson will likely play outside cornerback in Mitchell’s place for the remainder of the game.

The two offenses each punted once in the first half. They accomplished that on their first two drives of the second half. Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts beat wideout DeVonta Smith from his own 11-yard line on a third-and-6, giving the Eagles a kickback to the Giants. New York takes control at its own 44-yard line.

New York opened the second half with a 3-and-out and punted for the second time in the game. Quarterback Jackson Dart, facing unblocked pressure, fired a deep pass to Johnson, but the tight end was unable to control the ball on the ground and was ruled incomplete.

With 13:43 remaining in the third quarter, the Eagles’ offense was on the offensive at its own 7-yard line after receiving an unnecessary roughness penalty on a punt.

Philadelphia barely made it to midfield in the final 79 seconds of the first half, but time ran out before kicker Jake Elliott got within range for the game-winning field goal. The Eagles entered halftime with a three-point lead over the Giants, with the Giants kicking off the second half.

This is the first time the Giants have led at halftime against the Eagles since Week 18 of the 2023 season.

New York responded to the Eagles’ long scoring streak with a score of its own. The Giants took the lead by advancing 67 yards in 15 plays. This time, it was another Giants rookie as Scattebo found the end zone, scoring the winning touchdown over the left guard from four yards left.

Jude McAtamney added the extra point with 1:19 left in the first half for a three-point lead.

Philadelphia’s top cornerback is sidelined with what the team is calling a hamstring injury as the game approaches halftime. His return to tonight’s game is questionable, but the Eagles are replacing him with veteran Adoree’ Jackson.

Philadelphia called the infamous “push-push” play four consecutive times inside the Giants’ own 5-yard line, resulting in the go-ahead score. Quarterback Jalen Hurts crossed the goal line with one yard left to go, capping a 13-play, 74-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes of game time.

Jake Elliott’s extra point helped give Philadelphia a four-point lead with 6:56 left in the first half.

Philadelphia’s offense advanced 72 yards in seven plays and scored the first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Jalen Hurts took the snap from under center in an empty backfield and tossed the ball to Goedert for a 3-yard touchdown.

Jake Elliott’s extra point helped the Eagles cut the lead to three points with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

New York’s offense took just four plays to advance 66 yards and score. Quarterback Jackson Dart scrambled away from second-and-nine pressure and found Wan’Dale Robinson on the right sideline. Robinson escaped a tackle by Andrew Mukuba and sprinted down the right sideline, scoring yet another Giants touchdown.

Jude McAtamney’s extra point was no good, but the Giants held a 10-point lead with 5:37 left in the first quarter.

New York’s defense interfered with Saquon Barkley on second-and-5 from the Eagles’ own 34-yard line, resulting in a loss of three yards. On the next play, Giants edge rusher Brian Burns looped inside for a drive-stopping sack and lost eight yards.

With 7 minutes and 39 seconds left in the first quarter, the Giants’ offense recovered the ball at their own 34-yard line.

Facing third-and-7 from the Eagles’ own 19-yard line, Giants quarterback Jackson Dart evaded the tackler and sprinted for a touchdown, his second rushing score of his rookie season. A 34-yard shot from Dart to Lil’ Jordan Humphrey set up the Giants near the red zone.

New York leads Philadelphia with 9:59 left in the first quarter.

Saquon Barkley ran for 31 yards on his first two carries, but the Eagles offense limited him to just five yards and he was given a breather. Dallas Goedert couldn’t get past his marker from the Giants’ 29 to third and 10, and the Eagles brought in their special teams unit.

Jake Elliott made a 42-yard field goal with 11:59 left in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Yes, it didn’t take long. Saquon Barkley took the first snap 19 yards just over Gatto, giving the Eagles a first down. He returned to center and got the first down.

Philadelphia would have great field position, as the first kickoff did not fall into the landing zone (inside the 20-yard line). Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and others will start the first drive from their own 40-yard line.

Giants vs. Eagles predictions

It’s a beautiful October night in East Rutherford, kicking off spooky season. The defending champions haven’t lost in a row since December 2023, and that streak is unlikely to end tonight against a reeling Giants team featuring a rookie quarterback. This feels like the perfect spot for the Eagles. Slumping stars Saquon Barkley and AJ Brown will lead the charge to double-digit wins.

prediction: Eagles 26, Giants 16
