More and more people are paying Medicare supplements. Do you want to?

0

play

2026 Medicare enrollment begins October 15th. Do you know how much money you made two years ago?

Your 2024 income will determine whether you pay the Medicare Supplement, or Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), next year. Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries must pay IRMAA plus the standard premium if their taxable income exceeds a certain threshold. IRMAA also applies to any prescription drug coverage.

Medicare premiums are expected to rise by near-record amounts next year, eating up a significant portion of the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) older Americans may receive. IRMAA can more than double your standard monthly health insurance premium and almost double your drug premium.

“Medicare is going to be taken out of Social Security, which could be very painful,” said John Jones, an investment advisor at Heritage Financial. “Social Security couldn’t do anything other than pay Medicare.”

Only about 8 percent of Medicare enrollees, or 5.1 million people, pay the Medicare Part B surcharge, compared with 1.7 million Americans when the surcharge began in 2007 to fund Medicare, according to a Medicare Administrative Board report. The number of people paying IRMAA is expected to increase to 8.6 million by 2034.

Nearly 4.5 million Americans pay extra for Part D drug plans, and that number is projected to rise to 7.7 million by 2034.

How much is IRMAA?

IRMAA’s 2026 income threshold has not yet been finalized. However, the Medicare Administrative Board report estimates that in addition to the expected standard monthly Medicare premium of $206.50 and various plan premiums for prescription drug coverage, high-income individuals will pay:

  • Individuals with incomes between $109,001 and $137,000, or couples filing jointly with incomes between $218,001 and $274,000, pay IRMAA of $82.60 per month in health insurance premiums and an additional $14.50 in drug premiums.
  • Single filers with incomes between $137,001 and $171,000 or joint filers with incomes between $274,001 and $342,000 will pay $206.50 more per month and $37.50 for prescription drug coverage.
  • Individuals with incomes between $171,001 and $205,000, or joint filers with incomes between $342,001 and $410,000, pay an additional $334.40 per month, plus an additional $60.40 in prescription drug coverage.
  • Single filers with incomes between $205,001 and $500,000, or married couples filing jointly between $410,001 and $750,000, pay IRMAA of $454.30 per month and $78.60 for prescription drug coverage.
  • Individuals with incomes of at least $500,001 or joint filers with incomes of at least $750,001 pay an additional $495.60 per month plus an additional $85.80 for prescription drug plans.

How can seniors avoid Medicare surcharges?

Michael Chua, an attorney with Paxterra Law Firm, said Americans focused on saving as much as possible for retirement often overlook IRMAA, “and the results can be surprising.” “People need to plan. IRMAA is a two-year look back, so what you do today will affect what your premiums will be tomorrow.”

Ideally, Americans plan for retirement throughout their lives, advisers said, starting by saving their allowance money as children, maximizing retirement plans and company matchmaking as adults, and using layoffs and periods of low income while staying home to encourage their children to make Roth conversions.

Roth conversions, which move money from traditional pre-tax accounts to after-tax Roth accounts, can help keep future income low and IRMAA in check, advisers said.

At age 73, required minimum distributions (RMDs) from tax-deferred retirement accounts such as 401(k)s begin. Distributions are taxable income and, if large enough, can trigger IRMAA. Roth accounts are not subject to RMDs.

Nick Barr, CEO of Inspire Wealth, said: “As you approach retirement, the location of your assets becomes important.” He said Americans should aim to contribute up to a third of their funds to Roth accounts before retirement and consider moving to Roth accounts early in retirement, when income is lower.

Advisors cautioned that Roth conversions must be strategically planned because the amount converted from a tax-deferred retirement fund to a Roth account counts as taxable income. Advisers warned that the conversion would also require cash to pay taxes.

Early planning allows for more flexibility, including access to tax benefits throughout adulthood. For example, let’s say your personal income is $70,000 and your marginal tax rate is 22%. The next 24% tax bracket won’t be reached until 2026, when your income exceeds $105,700. Advisers said the 22% tax bracket could be “filled” by negotiating enough losses to reach, but not exceed, $105,700.

What if I’m already 62 years old?

Those who missed the earlier boat should start today, advisors said.

Americans approaching age 65, the age at which they can enroll in Medicare, should consider cutting back on work to reduce their income. At the same time, if you can afford it, do some Roth conversions.

“One to two years is not enough time to make big changes,” Boer said, but people can reduce their IRMAA by retiring.

It is also said to be able to “peel off a bandaid.” “If you can’t avoid[IRMAA]shorten your payment time by doing most Roth conversions over a few years and only paying IRMAA for a few years.”

Jones said people can also try suing IRMAA. According to the Social Security Administration, you may be eligible for a premium reduction if you have a life-changing event, such as a decrease in your household income due to marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, loss of income, or payment of an employer settlement.

“You can fake a Ross conversion,” Jones said. “If you do a large Roth conversion, your income will skyrocket. But if you had a significant life event and say it was a one-time thing, you might get your (IRMAA) back.”

For example, if you are self-employed, if you work normally for a year and make a Roth conversion, your income will be higher that year. The next year, because your income has decreased, you can save time and write your IRMAA appeal. “In some cases, you get two years,” Jones said.

A family of seven was taken hostage in Gaza. the last people are coming back

0

Alana Zaichik, like President Donald Trump, is heading to Israel where her family will finally be reunited as part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the White House to end the war in Gaza.

play

  • On October 7, 2023, seven members of Alana Zejcik’s family were taken hostage by Hamas.
  • A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas could allow the two remaining detained family members to be released.
  • The five family members were previously released during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023.
  • Families continue to grapple with the trauma of kidnapping and captivity, especially for young children.

WASHINGTON — Somewhere in the Midwest, above the clouds, the news flashed on Alana Zejcik’s phone.

Hamas and Israel have agreed to ceasefire terms brokered by the White House, ending more than two years of fighting and potentially allowing the release of hostages still held in Gaza.

Zejcik couldn’t wait to get off the plane. She had been working and praying for this day. On October 7, 2023, her seven Jewish family members in Israel were abducted by Hamas fighters. Five of them, two cousins and three young daughters, were among the first hostages released as part of a temporary ceasefire in November 2023. However, the cousin’s husband, David Cunio, and his brother, Ariel Cunio, remained in captivity.

Czajczyk cried and frantically sent messages to her family. A text message from one of her cousins confirmed what she had read on the plane from Los Angeles to New York.

David and Ariel are back home. Right away.

“I was excited and wanted to jump on it,” she said.

But she didn’t. There was still work to be done.

“Fight for me. Don’t give up.’

Ms. Zejcik and her cousin are close. Like sisters. That’s what happens when you grow up with only siblings.

Sharon Kunio was the closest thing she had to a sister. As teenagers, they would walk around town and talk about the boy during Zejchik’s annual vacation to Israel.

Her other cousin, Danielle Arony, was like a big sister to her. When Danielle came to New Jersey to work as a nanny during high school, Zaychik stole cigarettes from her.

Their kidnapping hit Zejcik like a punch to the gut. Sharon and David were at home with their twin daughters, Emma and Yuri, then just three years old, in Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel, near the Gaza Strip, when armed Hamas militants opened fire. Daniel and his 5-year-old daughter Amelia were visiting for the weekend.

David’s younger brother Ariel was in another house on the same kibbutz.

All seven people were taken hostage. They were among 251 other men, women and children kidnapped in a brutal attack on Israel that killed 1,400 people.

When she returned to Brooklyn, Zejcik made it her mission to find her family. Two days earlier, she had quit her job at a social media technology platform. Searching for missing relatives becomes her full-time job.

She turned to traditional and social media to keep the world’s attention on the hostages. She agreed to an interview. I met with members of Congress. Hand over the petition to the United Nations. I sent a ton of long distance text and voice messages to my family in Israel.

Then, seven weeks after the kidnapping, a breakthrough occurred. Daniel and Amelia were released the day after Thanksgiving as part of a temporary ceasefire brokered by Qatar and the United States. Three days later, Sharon and the twins were also released.

Zeitchik wanted to meet them. To hug them. She boarded a plane to Israel the following February. Sharon was sleeping on the couch when we arrived.

“I just crawled in and held her forever,” Zejcik said.

She always believed they would come back. But when I met them and learned they were alive, I felt a great sense of relief. “It was very emotional,” she said.

However, the family was not yet complete. David and Ariel were still missing. He is still being held hostage somewhere in Gaza.

“Fight for me. Don’t give up,” David, who was thin, frail and with a scar on his leg, told Sharon as they hugged one last time before being released, she recalled in an interview with The Associated Press.

“Scream what I can’t scream,” he begged. “It’s really scary.”

No one in the family has seen them since. Week after week there were reports that some hostages had died in captivity. Still, the family held out hope that David and Ariel were alive. Then, last February, encouraging signs appeared. A recently released hostage sent a message to Sharon that David had been seen a few days earlier.

No sightings of Ariel have been reported. However, he and David are both believed to be alive, according to the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, a volunteer group focused on the safe return of all abductees in the Gaza Strip.

“Anything is possible”

Zejcik’s family has not received any official information about when David and Ariel will be released. The White House says it will likely be next Monday or Tuesday. But exactly when and where, they don’t know.

“We will not breathe until we are all home and in the arms of our loved ones,” Zejcik said.

Still, they are optimistic. The Israeli government approved the peace agreement early on Friday, October 10, and announced that a ceasefire had come into effect. Under the agreement, the Israeli military is to partially withdraw its troops within 24 hours and completely cease fighting in Gaza. Hamas is expected to free the 20 surviving Israeli hostages within 72 hours.

Zaichik is as confident as he can be that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders will see through to the deal.

“I know there is a lot of pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu from the U.S. government, and that was necessary,” she said. “And he agreed. That was the most important part for us. I also know that the Arab countries are putting a lot of pressure on Hamas and really pushing them into a corner. So I’m generally confident right now.”

still …

She paused for a moment to consider the possibility of the deal unraveling.

“Something can go wrong at any time,” she said. “I never dreamed that my family would be kidnapped. Now I know anything can happen.”

“Why are they trying to kill me?”

When David and Ariel return, she believes, the trauma of the past two years will not end.

Zejcik said Sharon has done her best to raise the twins on her own while fighting for David’s release. She hides her depression by putting on a happy face for the girls. They are now 5 years old and have been without their father for 2 years. They still play the silly games he taught them. They wear T-shirts embossed with color photos of his smiling face. They are startled by the sound of an “emergency alert” siren warning of falling rockets.

Amelia, now 7 years old, vividly remembers the kidnapping, the bad guys who took them, the terrible food they ate, and how the water in the shower froze. The time she had to take shelter in an air raid shelter was particularly painful for her.

“Why are they trying to kill me?” she asks.

Zychik said the state is providing trauma counseling and the girls’ mothers are coping with a lot of support from family, friends and others. Children, she says, are resilient in their own way. “But they have significant trauma from their time in captivity that we are still dealing with and will probably continue to deal with.”

David and Ariel have now been missing for 737 days and will take time to heal before they return. Israeli hospitals are preparing to receive all the hostages once they are released. Doctors will monitor their medical conditions and needs to see what complications have arisen during their care.

It is unclear how long they will be hospitalized. But when they finally come home, Zejcik said their families are ready to embrace them with all the love they need on the road to recovery.

On Friday, October 10, Zejchik boarded another plane in New York and returned to Israel.

She had planned the trip before the peace deal was announced and before she knew David and Ariel would be returning home. Still, she held out hope that her family would be whole again while there.

“I thought the universe was going to give me a gift,” she said.

Finally, she thinks it has happened.

Stars mourn Diane Keaton. Steve Martin and Reese Witherspoon pay tribute

0

Hollywood is in mourning following the death of legendary actress Diane Keaton.

The Oscar winner, whose acting career dates back to the 1960s, has died at the age of 79, according to People magazine and the New York Times.

The Los Angeles native has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including her “Book Club” co-star Mary Steenburgen, whom she admires.

“Diane was magical. There was and will never be anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. Her love for her family. What a magical person she was,” Steenburgen wrote in a statement shared with USA TODAY.

Candice Bergen said her “Book Club” co-star’s death was a huge loss for her and the world.

“Diane was a true artist. She was extremely talented and unique in so many areas, but she was also modest and amazingly eccentric. She will be sorely missed,” Bergen said in a statement shared with USA TODAY.

Jane Fonda, who also starred in the Book Club series, remembered Keaton as “a ray of life and light, constantly laughing at his own flaws.”

“She was unique,” Fonda wrote on Instagram. “And she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, but oh, she was a great actress!”

“Hocus Pocus” actress Bette Midler praised her “First Wives Club” co-star on Instagram, calling her “amazing, beautiful, amazing.”

“Words cannot express how unbearably sad this is. She was hilarious, completely original, and had none of the malice or competitiveness you would expect from a star like this,” Midler wrote. “What you saw was her true identity…Oh, la-la-la!”

“First Wives Club” co-star Goldie Hawn emotionally wrote, “Diane, we are not ready to lose you.”

She recalled that Keaton “didn’t like being praised and was very humble, but I can’t say ‘shut up’ now, honey. There never was anyone like you and there never will be anyone like you…I’m going to miss you so much.”

‘The Woman King’ star Viola Davis is distraught over the loss of a figure who “defined femininity”.

Davis posted on Instagram, “No!! No!! No!! God, no yet, no!! Man…” “The pathos, the humor, the lightness, your ever-present youth and vulnerability. You put your soul into every role, making it impossible to imagine anyone else inhabiting the role. You were definitely, unapologetically you!!! Love you, man…rest in peace. God bless your family and I know the angels are walking you home.”

“Father of the Bride” family speaks

Keaton’s Father of the Bride co-stars Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Steve Martin also paid tribute.

Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton’s daughter in the classic 1991 film, called her experience with her on-screen mother “one of the highlights of my life.”

“You are one of a kind and I was thrilled to have you in my orbit at one point. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, talent, and most of all your laughter,” she wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Martin, who played her husband, shared an excerpt from an Interview magazine article in which Martin Short asked Keaton who was sexier and Keaton replied, “I mean, they’re both idiots.”

“I don’t know who originally posted this, but it sums up my fun relationship with Diane,” Martin wrote on Instagram.

Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, Leonardo DiCaprio and more react

“Legally Blonde” star Reese Witherspoon paid a two-minute tribute to one of the first mentors of her career at Hello Sunshine’s Shine Away event in Los Angeles.

She said that when she was 15 years old, she auditioned for the 1991 television movie Wildflowers, directed by Keaton. Witherspoon said Keaton couldn’t believe her country accent and hired her on the spot.

“From ‘Annie Hall’ to ‘The Godfather’ to ‘Something’s Gotta Give,’ she’s just an incredibly unforgettable, truly original person. So for Diane, go watch her movies, wear really cool, interesting clothes, in black and white. Take cool photos, and just live the dream. I think Diane would be really happy if she was unique and interesting,” Witherspoon told the crowd.

Mandy Moore, who played Keaton’s daughter in the 2007 comedy Because I Said So, said it was an honor to call Keaton “Mommy” on set.

“Once in a lifetime honor. What an incandescent human being Di was. We will be so sad to see her go for all sorts of reasons, but also because we felt like she would be here forever and dazzle us with her talent and charm (and her style)!!! One of the best jobs ever. My love to her children and loved ones,” Moore wrote.

Other Hollywood responses included Leonardo DiCaprio, Rosie O’Donnell, Nia Vardalos and Cynthia Nixon.

“Diane Keaton was one of a kind,” DiCaprio wrote about his Marvin’s Room co-star on his Instagram Story, sharing a vintage photo of himself with Keaton. “Wonderful, funny, and unapologetically herself. A legend, an icon, and a truly kind human being.”

Nixon said, “When I was a kid, Diane Keaton was my absolute idol. I loved her acting. I loved her vibe. I loved everything about her. I tried to dress like her since I was 12. I wore my hair long. She wore a hat and vest and book-like glasses (though her eyes were fine) because I thought she looked more like Diane Keaton.A little over 10 years ago, she was cast in a movie called Five. Flying up with her was like a dream come true. I was very shy around her, but I think she liked me, and that meant everything to me. ”

O’Donnell wrote, “Oh, this breaks my heart. Her love for her children, her style, her grace, I will miss her so much.”

Luke Evans wrote: “Such a sad day. Rest in peace #DianeKeaton. Such a wonderful actor and a loving person with a kind heart and a brilliantly independent spirit.”

Vardalos wrote, “Grace. Style. Talent. Above all, a comedy gal who set the bar high for all of us who came after her. Rest in peace sweet and funny Diane Keaton. Reposting a photo from my friend’s icon page.”

Josh Gad said, “Diane Keaton has defined my love of movies in many ways, from Annie Hall to The Godfather movies, from The First Wives Club to Baby Boom, from Father of the Bride to Somebody’s Gotta.” Until Gibb, her resume here is truly iconic and worthy of a Hall of Famer. I was very fortunate to work with her on an unproduced pilot for HBO many years ago, and what I found was the most humbling and brutally funny. These are some of the most incredibly talented people I have ever met.”

Fashion designer Zac Posen wrote, “Diane Keaton is gone. I only knew her through the light she gave on screen, and I will deeply miss that light.”

Actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris wrote, “My condolences to Diane Keaton, America’s most gracious, elegant, and fiercely talented muse. She remained self-aware throughout her many roles, which reminded me as a young performer that the most interesting people are the many facets of themselves.”

Broadcaster Piers Morgan wrote: “Rest in peace Diane Keaton, 79 years old. Wonderful in films like The Godfather and Father of the Bride, Oscar-winning actress for Annie Hall. One of Hollywood’s greatest actresses and a funny woman. Sad news.”

Melissa Gilbert said, “People often ask me who my idol is and I’ve never answered honestly because I was hoping our paths would cross again (we did once when I was 17) and that she’s my idol. I didn’t want her to know…so much that I thought I’d burst out and say something embarrassing…I kept it to myself so that if we ever met, she wouldn’t know in advance what a fool I was.”

Cubs vs. Brewers live score updates, NLDS Game 5 highlights, TV channels

The National League Division Series is all about Saturday night’s winner-take-all Game 5 between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs at American Family Field.

The Brewers won the first two games at home and appeared on track to win it all, but the Cubs rallied to win Games 3 and 4 at Wrigley Field, sending the series back to Milwaukee for the deciding game. The winner advances to the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which begins Monday in Milwaukee or Los Angeles.

Only 10 teams in baseball history have ever overcome a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-five series, most recently the New York Yankees in 2017. Milwaukee had the best regular season record in MLB, but has lost the last six playoff series dating back to 2018, while the Cubs are looking to return to the NLCS for the first time since 2017.

Follow us for live updates:

After an early power show, things calmed down at American Family Field.

The Brewers and Cubs remain tied 1-1 through three innings in Game 5 of the decisive NLDS.

The Cubs selected Collin Ray as the No. 2 bullpen relay, and he has had a near-perfect record, allowing one hit in two innings. Meanwhile, Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski calmed his heart rate after allowing a home run to Seiya Suzuki, the leadoff batter he faced in the second inning.

He allowed two more hits but no more runs. The intriguing question now is how long Brewers manager Pat Murphy will continue to protect his prized rookie.

The Milwaukee Brewers won the opening game battle, but the Chicago Cubs responded with a fast break against the Brew Crew’s rookie superstar.

William Contreras hit a two-out solo homer off Drew Pomerantz, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead over 6-foot-8 rookie Jacob Misiorowski. However, not a single batter could last, and Seiya Suzuki hit Misiorowski’s pitch over the wall in right-center field.

This was a shock to the Brewers. In Game 2, the Brewers provided relief from the winning pitcher Misiorowski, pitching three scoreless innings.

However, The Miz calmly forced his team out, and the club entered the bottom of the second inning tied 1-1.

With two outs and a count of 3-2, Contreras put Drew Pomerantz in the yard, making it 1-0 for the home team after one inning.

It must be a good feeling for the Brewers, who lost Game 4 in a shutout.

Megill retired the Cubs’ first three batters in order, finishing with a strikeout of Kyle Tucker. After that, the Brewers’ starters were fired up, to say the least.

Incredibly, Game 5 was the first game in the series in which the Brewers went scoreless in the first inning.

What time is the Cubs vs. Brewers game?

The first pitch is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast on TBS and HBO Max, and can be streamed on Sling TV.

Cubs vs. Brewers odds

BetMGM: Brewers win

The staff writes: Based on recent trends, the model takes into account game simulation, recent player performance, starting pitching and injuries and predicts the Brewers will win Saturday’s MLB game with 55.8% confidence. ”

DraftKings: Brewers

Zach Thompson wrote, “The Brewers took the first two games of the series convincingly, 9-3 and 7-3. The Cubs definitely got a big boost from their play at Wrigley Field, but a return to Milwaukee should get the Brewers back in the win column. The Brewers are much more accustomed to playing out of the bullpen, and Misiorowski is a big part of their plan, giving them a huge advantage.”

Sports Illustrated: Brewers

Ryan Gilbert writes: “Home field advantage was strong in this series, with the Brewers and Cubs winning two games in their home stadium. We’re back in Milwaukee for Game 5, and it’s hard to imagine the Brewers losing at home. This season, the Brewers were 52-29 at home and the Cubs were just 42-39 on the road. Chicago had won two of three games in Milwaukee.” The Brewers have now won four of their past five games at home, including the playoffs. ”

Drew Pomerantz and Trevor Megill are the nominal starting pitchers for Game 5 of the National League Division Series, as the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers throw in the “openers” for a winner-take-all game at American Family Field.

That means the spotlight should quickly switch to Brewers rookie flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski.

The All-Star earned three shutout wins in Game 2, reaching 164 mph on the radar gun and eclipsing 100 mph 31 times in a relatively short stint. Misiorowski has had four full days of rest and should be ready to go.

How the Brewers get to The Miz remains a fluid equation in bailing out Megill.

“It’s like an equation: If we have to rescue so-and-so, this is the best reliever on this team,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said in a press conference before Game 5. “If he gets through that, we have the best player here to start the second game based on where we finished. And we’ll take it from there.”

For the Cubs, Shota Imanaga, a left-hander who scored four points in just 2/3 innings in Game 2, will be playing. As we saw in Game 5 of the AL District Series, both teams will be giving their all.

What V12 cars can you still buy new?

play

  • V12 engines are now only available in high-end exotic cars.

Nothing compares to the sound and feel of a big 12-cylinder engine. It used to be sold by many car manufacturers, but these days it is rarely used. They are not a viable powertrain option for the majority of vehicles due to the carbon emissions they produce and the high costs of manufacturing and repair.

If you’re concerned about fuel efficiency, these cars aren’t for you. It is well known for the amount of power it can generate and the unique sound it makes when accelerating.

There are less than a dozen left, and only exotic cars are still in use. So what V12 engines can you still buy new for the 2026 model year?

aston martin vanquish

A few years ago, Aston Martin had plans for an electric car. They ultimately decided to cancel and build more V12 engines. Their new and improved Vanquish keeps one of their most famous vehicles alive and retains the engine they’ve been known for over the years.

ferrari 12 chilindri

12Cilindri means “12 cylinders” in English. This is the latest addition to the front-engine V12 line produced by Ferrari. The 12Cilindri is the only V12 two-door coupe offered by the brand, as the brand’s latest hypercar, the F80, uses a twin-turbo V6.

ferrari purosange

Ferrari has yet another V12 in its lineup, and it’s in an SUV. The company approached the development of an SUV like other exotic car manufacturers. Ferrari prefers to call this big four-door car a “full-fledged four-door sports vehicle” or FUV (Ferrari Utility Vehicle), but it’s still an SUV.

lamborghini revelto

Lamborghini is well known for making the loudest cars possible. The alien-inspired design language, scissor doors, and roaring V12 engines have been the company’s bread and butter for decades. After the Aventador ended production, Revuelto took the V12 engine to the next level and added a hybrid system for a total of 1,001 horsepower.

Mercedes-Maybach S680

Mercedes recently announced that the Maybach S680 will be powered by a V12 engine. As the brand’s most luxurious car, it makes sense to keep a different engine than the rest of the lineup. This car has an MSRP of $244,400, making it the cheapest car on this list.

rolls royce cullinan

Most V12 engines are known for their loud, screaming exhaust sounds. The Rolls-Royce V12 makes almost no noise. Huge amounts of additional power are added to push these heavy land yachts along the road in maximum comfort.

rolls royce ghost

This is an entry-level Rolls-Royce that starts at $357,750. While it doesn’t have the status of a Phantom or the size of a Cullinan, it’s still one of the most luxurious cars money can buy.

rolls royce phantom

Rolls-Royce’s flagship and the king of luxury cars, the Phantom, still exists. Since its inception in 1925, new versions are still being made, so being the oldest car on the market is kind of a big deal.

  • Josh Norris will be sidelined for a “significant amount of time” after suffering his second major injury since being acquired before the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
  • Norris has been limited to four games since joining the Sabers due to two injuries.
  • Here are some other injury updates around the NHL:

Buffalo Sabers forward Josh Norris continues to have bad luck with injuries.

He suffered his second major injury since being acquired at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, and coach Lindy Ruff told reporters he will be out for a “significant amount of time.”

“We don’t know what that amount is. He’s still evaluating it,” Ruff said Saturday, Oct. 11.

Norris will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after injuring his oblique in the third game after being acquired from the Ottawa Senators in a trade for Dylan Cozens.

This season, he suffered an upper-body injury in the Sabres’ season opener loss to the New York Rangers. He was injured during a faceoff and was slow to return to the bench.

Coach Ruff said this season’s injuries are different than last season. Norris also had shoulder issues early in his NHL career.

Another injury with the Sabers limited him to four games. He had a goal and an assist last season in Buffalo, but was scoreless in his only game this season.

He had 90 goals and 156 points in 236 career games over five seasons with the Senators before being traded.

The Sabers are trying to end a 14-year playoff drought but are battling other injuries, including goaltender Ukko-Pekka Lukonen.

Iron Hill Brewery files for bankruptcy after sudden store closures

play

The Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant chain, which closed 16 stores in recent weeks, has filed for bankruptcy.

The Newark, Del., brewery, founded in November 1996, has filed for Chapter 7 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey to begin liquidating the nearly 30-year-old East Coast chain, which until recently had 10 locations in Pennsylvania, two locations each in Delaware and South Carolina, and separate locations in Georgia and New Jersey.

A month ago, Iron Hill closed its flagship store in Newark, Delaware, and two restaurants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Two weeks later, on September 25, the remaining employees at Iron Hill Restaurant learned they had lost their jobs.

Iron Hill Brewery announced its intention to file for bankruptcy in an email to employees, the Delaware News Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported.

According to the bankruptcy filing, Iron Hill Brewery’s assets are estimated at $164,581 and its total debt is $20 million, most of which is a $17.3 million lien on real estate held by BankUnited in Miami Lakes, Florida.

Possibility of class action lawsuit over Iron Hill Brewery bankruptcy

The Delaware News Journal reports that at least one law firm is considering a possible class action lawsuit over Iron Hill’s bankruptcy, citing potential violations of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988. The WARN Act requires most employers with 100 or more employees to notify employees at least 60 calendar days in advance of any planned closure or mass layoff.

The Berwyn, Pennsylvania-based law firm Sauder Scherkopf has launched a website soliciting comments from former Iron Hill employees who believe their rights under the WARN Act have been violated.

Court rules that President Trump cannot send National Guard to Illinois

0

The court has ruled that President Donald Trump can still federalize the National Guard.

play

A federal appeals court said on October 11 that the Trump administration cannot send the National Guard to Illinois.

But a brief ruling by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago said President Donald Trump could still federalize the National Guard. The ruling states that troops already deployed do not need to return home for the time being.

The appellate court ruling largely upholds an Oct. 9 temporary restraining order by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois that blocked the administration from sending troops into the state. Judge April Perry wrote in her opinion that deploying the National Guard was “likely to cause civil unrest.”

The Chicago area has become the epicenter of the administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown known as Operation Midway Blitz. In response, protests erupted, particularly in front of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the Broadview suburb.

The administration had deployed National Guard troops from Illinois and Texas in response to what it called violent clashes between protesters and operatives in the Midwestern state and the nation’s third-largest city, Chicago. Local and state officials said the federal government was exaggerating the facts on the ground.

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago sued the Trump administration to oppose sending troops to Democratic-led cities and states. Lawyers from the U.S. Department of Justice appealed Perry’s ruling on October 10.

Spokespeople for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment. The White House did not immediately respond to an emailed request.

President Trump also sent the National Guard to other deep blue cities, against the wishes of local officials. In Memphis, the Tennessee National Guard began patrolling the city on October 10, city officials announced. Republican state officials welcomed the administration’s action.

Federal troops are also being dispatched by Republican administrations to Portland, Oregon, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. Judges in California and Oregon ruled the deployment illegal and unjustified.

East Coast braces for heavy rain and strong winds due to nor’easter

The East Coast was already experiencing astronomical tidal effects from the supermoon. The storm is expected to cause further flooding in coastal areas.

play

NEW YORK – The East Coast is bracing for heavy rain and strong winds as the Northeastern influence intensifies over the weekend.

Heavy rain has already affected coastal areas of the Southeast since Saturday, Oct. 11, creating a risk of localized flash flooding and increasing risk for urban areas and low-lying areas, the National Weather Service said in an early morning forecast. From Saturday night through at least Monday, the storm is expected to intensify with winds exceeding 45 mph, coastal flooding and coastal erosion, and rain will move north to the northeast.

“The storm is not going to go away in a hurry,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bill Degar told USA TODAY.

A nor’easter is a storm that forms along the east coast of North America and produces a large area of severe low pressure with northeasterly winds. The latest one formed on Friday and is moving north through the Atlantic Ocean, Degar said.

The East Coast is already experiencing astronomical tidal effects from the supermoon, with water levels higher than normal as the storm further floods coastal areas. The densely populated I-95 corridor should brace for rain, but coastal areas could be hit the hardest.

Georgia and the Carolinas were experiencing heavy rain and strong winds late Saturday morning. In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, which has been battered by recent hurricanes, the National Weather Service warned of 1 to 3 feet of flooding from strong winds into Saturday afternoon. Flooding was expected to increase further Saturday into Sunday.

Warning to remain vigilant

State and local officials had already issued emergency alerts.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore urged residents to remain vigilant along the coast and inland. New Jersey has already declared a state of emergency, effective Saturday at 10 p.m.

Coastal flooding could reach 1.5 to 2 feet in flood-prone areas in and around New York City, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the New York City Weather Bureau. Combined with high tides, the risk of flooding will be highest from Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to be prepared at home and to use caution if they must travel to affected areas. New York City officials warned of coastal flooding along highways, roads, underpasses and underpasses.

“New Yorkers should expect a storm this weekend that could bring high winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.

City emergency management officials advised people living in flood-prone areas or low-lying areas to move parked vehicles to higher ground or inland, gather supplies and ensure storm drains are cleared to reduce localized flooding. People should also prepare for power outages.

Degar said storms are expected in New England from Sunday through at least Monday. On Cape Cod, local officials warned of wind gusts of up to 90 mph and a coastal flood watch.

Ministry of Education cleans out special education office, union announces

0

The agency has cut nearly the entire staff involved in administering federal funds for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, one of the officials said.

play

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Education has laid off nearly the entire Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services in a new wave of layoffs that began Friday, the union representing the agency’s employees announced.

It was not immediately clear how many people in the department had been laid off because there was no official estimate from the agency. But based on reports from staff and their managers, most employees below the leadership level were part of the layoffs, said Rachel Gittleman, president of American Federation of Public Employees Local 252.

Separately, an employee in another office involved with the university access program known as TRIO was also fired, she said.

Gittleman told USA TODAY that the layoffs, which the union challenged in court, “double the harm to K-12 students and schools across the country.”

A Department of Education spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Saturday. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has repeatedly stated that protecting students with disabilities and ensuring they have access to the educational resources to which they are legally entitled is a top priority.

“I’d like to see more money go to states for that,” she told CNN in March.

In a court filing Friday, the Justice Department announced that more than 460 Department of Education employees have been laid off, reducing the department’s already exhausted workforce by about a fifth. That number could rise even further.

The layoffs affect more than half a dozen federal agencies and are part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to pressure Congressional Democrats to end the ongoing government shutdown. Nearly 90% of the Department of Education has also been furloughed.

A Department of Education official told USA TODAY that the department has laid off nearly all employees who work to administer funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the main federal law that supports students with disabilities. He wasn’t sure how these programs would survive going forward.

“This system was designed to happen at the school level, with district oversight, state oversight and federal oversight,” said Glenna Wright Gallo, who served as assistant secretary of state from 2023 to 2025. “Now we’re losing that system of checks and balances.”

Secretary McMahon suggested that the Department of Health and Human Services, rather than his own agency, would be better able to oversee IDEA funding. However, a parliamentary vote is required for the transition to become official.

Given the likely absence of comprehensive federal services for students with disabilities, Wright-Gallo recommended that parents and advocates start paying more attention to support systems at the local and state level.

2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS delivers muscle car speed with modern EV technology

0

play

Strong Points

  1. Oh, that’s early
  2. The coolness of SS
  3. solid range

Cons

  1. Not the fastest charging
  2. Sound please
  3. On the heavy side

The button looks like a suspicious bat signal. When you press the button, a hissing, pulsing, thumping sound echoes through the car, letting you know you’ve done something important. 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS AWD. All 615 electric horses are at your command, ready to propel you and your 5,729-pound SUV toward the horizon. Try hitting the go pedal with a hammer. It is best to press the C1 to C7 vertebrae firmly against the seat. Because otherwise, severe snapback will occur.

For the uninitiated, WOW stands for Wide Open Watts, a drive mode that activates a full-power enchilada when you press a button on the screen. It’s a kitschy tagline, but there’s nothing cheap about the wow factor you feel when you roll off the line in the SS EV, a vehicle that Chevrolet claims is the fastest SS-badged car it’s ever produced. Quite a statement considering the pedigree of Chevrolet’s supersport sub-brand.

How fast is the fastest SS in history?

The overwhelming power and performance of today’s vehicles, especially the huge and heavy EVs (which weigh only about 700 pounds less than EVs). two With dual motors, a huge 102.0 kWh battery pack, 615 horsepower and 650 pounds of torque, the ’67 Camaro SS 350 delivers incredible power just like the Blazer SS and is sure to blow the minds of classic muscle car drivers and blow them away at the drag strip. The 0-60 mph test figure of 3.4 seconds is in line with Chevrolet’s vehicle estimates, requiring just 11.8 seconds for the quarter mile, at which point it would be traveling at 117.5 mph.

There aren’t many all-electric performance SUVs on the market today that are in the same size class and price range as, or even close to, the midsize Blazer EV SS. The closest one is probably the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which weighs about 1,000 pounds less, has a 3.7-inch shorter wheelbase, and has 641 horsepower off the line. As expected, the 5N was much faster.: 60 mph takes 2.8 seconds and 194.9 mph takes 11.0 seconds.

Pirouette and drag it down

Chevrolet’s SS cars weren’t just capable of burning out at traffic lights or dropping the hammer when the Christmas tree lights turned green, they were also equipped with gear to improve cornering and stopping. The same goes for the Blazer EV SS. It’s not a world-class handler, especially considering its weight, but it’s not embarrassing per se.

That said, once again, the Ioniq 5 N recorded a 24.1-second rip time at 0.82g (average) in our top-line dynamic test, which included a figure-eight lap, compared to the Blazer’s 25.1-second time at 0.80g average. The same goes for the skidpad, where Hyundai beats Chevrolet by 0.96g to 0.85g.

Braking is an area where the Blazer SS gets a special merit badge, with a strong pedal that doesn’t fade or overheat during hard track work, and like other General Motors heavyweight EVs we’ve tested, there’s not a lot of brake dive. But as you might expect, the 5 N also crushes stopping from 90 mph, requiring only 102 feet as opposed to the Blazer SS’s 114 feet.

Again, the Chevy is much larger and carries much more pounds, so it’s worth taking these results with a few grains of electrons. In fact, regardless of how well the small Hyundai performs, what many potential buyers are actually looking for is a plus-size Blazer, and they may be looking for something over 5N. And the underlying Ioniq 5 and Blazer EV is a former Motor Trend SUV of the Year winnerwe will continue to dig into both as an overall proposition.

Range and road test

There’s one area where the Blazer SS beats the Ioniq 5 N, and that’s in the range department. Thanks to its huge battery pack, the Blazer’s 303 miles of EPA range is well below the 5N’s 221 miles. In the MotorTrend Road-Trip Range test of highway miles, where the EV runs from 100 percent to 5 percent charge, the Blazer SS EV posted a solid 276 miles. It also beat 5 N in EPA city/highway/combined numbers, 92/77/84 vs. 84/72/78.

However, more to the point, Blazers aren’t necessarily top performers. This is another area where Hyundai’s EV is far superior. Charge time from 5 to 80 percent on a 350-kilowatt fast charger is average at best, taking 54 minutes, but it took a whopping 97 minutes to reach 100 percent. That’s a lot of movie run time, so it’s a good idea to have a queue ready to watch while you charge.

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the Blazer SS EV’s cabin, you’ll find it to be a great place to be, with comfortable seats (though some reinforcement is needed for high-speed cornering) and plenty of space for all passengers. The large wraparound digital screen facing the driver is one of the best in the industry in terms of display and usability, and the business of not having CarPlay or Android Auto might be a bit of an exaggeration. The Google integration works well and allows you to natively set up most of the features you would normally use on your phone.

The interior is spacious, and the car’s optional dual-pane panoramic power sunroof is well worth the $1,495 outlay. On the outside, aside from its Halloween-themed color scheme (Habanero Orange), the Blazer SS, like its SS predecessor, looks less flashy and more like the part of a sports-themed SUV.

On the freeway or on side roads, you’ll notice that the ride is firm over bumps in the road. The shocks are not adaptive, so the ride quality is the same in any drive mode. The good news is that the long wheelbase helps eliminate the worst ride quality effects. It all comes with territory. You want the sporty appeal and huge 22-inch rims of an SS, right? If not, you can always choose from other blazers. One-pedal driving enthusiasts will love the two modes you can choose from. For us, it’s aggressive mode and stranglingly aggressive mode.

However, I wish I could dial in a cool sound mode when I quietly hiss away from the signal. May I recommend something like a Chevrolet small-block LS V-8?Also, this isn’t the type of vehicle that shrinks around you, but rather one that falls on top of you. You can feel its weight when you speed up.

Yes, there are a few dents in the armor, but taken as a whole, the Blazer EV SS is a strikingly modern interpretation of the spirit of the Chevrolet SS, packaged into a flashy future. Those who were into 60’s muscle cars would be understandably amazed by this.

How a restored 1983 Jeep Wagoneer became a teenager’s dream vehicle

0

play

One day when Victoria Mann was 14 years old, she came home to find an old Jeep Wagoneer Limited parked in her father’s driveway. This was not unusual. Brian Mann has been repairing and selling four-wheel drive vehicles since the 1980s.

The beige paint on this one had faded and there were some dents and rough spots on the surface. The nutmeg-colored upholstery and bucket seats were photographed. The headliner hung low. The car was very old and was manufactured 23 years before she was born.

It was hers, a $2,500 gift from her father. her first car.

“She had no clue. When she asked what that was sitting in the driveway, I said, ‘That’s your new Jeep!’ She didn’t say much for a while,” her father recalled.

Was she overjoyed?

There aren’t that many.

“I was thinking about buying a Jeep Wrangler, but when I saw this, I really thought it was something he was fixing up to sell. I guess he was hoping…” She paused, then said, “It’s not that old.”

Probably from the 21st century.

However, father and daughter together began dismantling the old Jeep and destroying the interior.

Her father tweaked the 360 V8 engine and replaced the suspension, brakes, and steering system. He installed a 6-inch lift kit and 33-inch tires on the original wheels.

Mann believes he has $10,000 invested in the 40-year-old Wagoneer. He said the ride was smooth and “will go smoothly and straight down the road at 80 mph.”

Victoria got her driver’s license and has been proudly driving her Jeep for about a year. At age 17, her opinion of this artifact changed from the day she first saw it.

“My friends think it’s great. They know that sound so they can hear me coming,” she explained of the V8’s big roar.

“She can’t hide it because my friends know what it feels like too,” her father said.

Jeep built the Wagoneer Limited for just one year. In 1984 it became the Grand Wagoneer, a name it retained until 1992.

A 1983 magazine ad for the Jeep Wagoneer Limited called it the “ultimate wagon” and it became the official vehicle of the America’s Cup. “Water covers three-quarters of the Earth’s surface. Our Wagoneer covers the rest.” Prices ranged from $16,889 to $44,600 in 2020 dollars.

The Wagoneer Limited featured tinted glass, a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, thick carpeting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a premium audio system with electronic tuning, a cassette player, and power windows, seats, and door locks.

And the fake wood panel trim that is thankfully long gone from Victoria Jeeps.

President Trump identifies ‘funds’ to pay for US military during shutdown

0

play

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he has found a way to pay the military during the government shutdown.

On Saturday, Oct. 11, President Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had authorized Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to use “specified funds” to pay the military.

During the government shutdown that began Oct. 1, military personnel may not receive their Oct. 15 checks. But President Trump on Oct. 9 mentioned the possibility of a standalone bill to pay the military during the government shutdown, saying military personnel would not receive checks.

Federal civil servants were expected to receive a pay cut on October 10 due to the government shutdown.

President Trump’s Truth Social post, posted at 1:35 p.m. ET, said: “Therefore, in my authority as Commander-in-Chief, I urge Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth to use all available funds to… I am directing the military to be paid on October 15th. We have identified funds for that, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to pay for the military. I will not allow the Democrats to retain the military and security overall.” Hostage to our country’s dangerous government, please shut down. ”

How many military personnel do you need to pay?

The approximately 1.3 million active-duty members of the U.S. military, along with hundreds of thousands of National Guard and non-military personnel employed by the Department of the Army, will leave without pay unless action is taken during the shutdown.

The Pentagon previously told USA TODAY that service members were last paid as scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 30, but will not receive payments again until appropriations are restored.

Military pay becomes flashpoint amid government shutdown

One of the most emotional moments of the government shutdown occurred on Oct. 9, when a woman who identified herself as a military wife confronted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) during a C-Span call-in show.

“As a Republican, I’m very disappointed in my party and I’m very disappointed in you because you have the power to recall the House,” the woman said, adding that her two children with serious medical conditions “could die.” “You refuse it, it’s just for show.”

Johnson said her situation keeps her up at night, but she blamed the uncertainty on Democrats, saying, “They’re the ones who are keeping us from getting the checks.”

Rep. Jennifer Quiggans (R-Va.), who introduced a bill in September to pay military personnel despite the government shutdown, urged House Republican leaders on Oct. 8 to quickly pass the bill.

She has 148 co-sponsors. However, the House remains in session until November 21, pending approval of the government reopening bill by the Senate.

Halloween candy takes center stage as trick-or-treaters enjoy a fun candy hunt. With a variety of options, from classic mini chocolate bars like Reese’s and Snickers to the polarizing candy corn, there’s something for everyone. Americans are expected to spend $3.9 billion on Halloween candy this year.

“Despite concerns about price increases due to tariffs, Halloween continues to resonate with consumers of all ages,” said Kathryn Cullen, vice president of industry and consumer insights at the National Retail Federation. “Whether it’s dressing up or carving pumpkins, more consumers are planning to participate in Halloween activities and traditions.Retailers are gearing up to make the shopping experience a treat for consumers this Halloween season.”

Additionally, 96% of households plan to purchase candy for Halloween in 2025.

Candy corn, a symbol of Halloween

Bar Louis, the restaurant chain that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, joins a growing list of restaurants owned by Sun Holdings.

Dallas-based Sun Holdings, which acquired Uncle Julio’s in January 2025, announced on October 7 that it has also acquired Bar Louie, which operates 39 restaurants and cocktail bars across the United States.

Bar Louie, founded in 1991 in Chicago, Illinois, filed for bankruptcy in March. At the time, the company had 31 company-owned stores and 17 franchised stores in 19 states. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and was acquired by BLH TopCo as part of that process.

The restaurant chain’s bankruptcy, which had 130 locations in 2018, comes after a number of popular restaurant brands, including LaZoo’s Cajun Cafe, filed for Chapter 11 protection earlier this month, according to Nation Restaurant News. Other recent bankruptcy filings include Bravo Brio Restaurants LLC, which operates 25 Brio Italian Grille restaurants and 23 Bravo Italian Kitchen restaurants, as well as Red Lobster, Tijuana Flats, TGI Friday’s and Hooters.

What kind of restaurants does Sun Holdings operate?

The acquisition expands Sun Holdings’ already expanding restaurant collection, which includes more than 1,800 eateries in 27 states, including Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Freebirds World Burrito, Golden Coral, IHOP, McAllister’s, Papa John’s, Popeyes and Taco Bueno, according to the company’s website.

“This acquisition represents an exciting step in our growth strategy,” Guillermo Perales, president and CEO of Sun Holdings, said in a statement on the company’s website. “Bar Louie’s signature martinis and distinctive brand make it a strong addition to our casual dining portfolio.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, Nation Restaurant News reported.

Biden undergoes radiation treatment for prostate cancer

Former President Joe Biden has begun receiving radiation treatment for an “aggressive” prostate cancer he was diagnosed with in May, a spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY.

Doctors discovered a “small nodule” on the 82-year-old Democrat’s prostate during a routine exam, and his office said it had spread to the bone.

“As part of his treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone therapy,” Biden’s press secretary told USA TODAY on Oct. 11.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, affecting one in eight men in the United States. Approximately 1 in 44 men will die from prostate cancer, but the research group says that most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from the disease.

Biden’s illness is said to be hormone-sensitive, meaning it is more amenable to treatment.

“Cancer affects us all,” Biden said in a May 19 post on the X Show. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with your love and support.”

He turns 83 next month.

Tennessee authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion. 18 people still missing

The cause of a deadly explosion at a Tennessee explosives factory remained under investigation on Oct. 11 as the community waited for news about 18 people still missing at the scene.

The explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in Hickman County, Tennessee, about 90 miles west of Nashville, could be heard for miles on the morning of October 10th. The facility processes high-grade explosives for demolition, military and other uses, according to its website.

Officials said 18 people were missing in the explosion. An unspecified number of people died. Early on October 10, authorities announced that 19 people were missing, but later announced that one person believed to be among the missing had been found in his home. Authorities said they will work through the weekend to rebuild and investigate the explosion.

Hickman County Sheriff Jason Craft said, “As you know, today we experienced a tragic incident that greatly impacted our community, Humphreys County, and surrounding communities. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.”

“The investigation is currently in an active stage and the scene remains a very dynamic situation,” Craft said.

What happened in the Tennessee explosion?

The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m. on October 10, authorities said. The explosion echoed for miles, was captured by home security cameras more than 20 miles away, and residents reported the ground shaking.

The cause of the explosion, which engulfed the entire building, was not immediately clear and authorities said they were investigating.

“I don’t think there’s an easy explanation for that,” Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said.

The hospital told the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network, that at least several people who suffered minor injuries from being near the explosion were treated at Ascension St. Thomas Three Rivers Hospital in Waverly, about 25 miles from the facility.

Asked to describe the building where the explosion occurred, Davis told reporters: “There’s nothing to explain. It’s gone.”

The public was asked to stay away from the area as first responders took control of the scene. Officials also asked the public “not to post about missing personnel or situations of any kind.”

Accurate Energetic Systems said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, colleagues, and community members affected by this incident. We would like to thank all the first responders who continue to work tirelessly under difficult circumstances.”

Explosives facilities have a history of safety violations

A Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development report obtained by the Nashville Tennessean said there were safety issues and violations at the explosives facility.

There was also an explosion at the facility in 2014, killing one person and injuring two others. The families of the deceased employees have settled a lawsuit alleging that workplace safety standards at the time of the explosion were below those required by law, The Tennessean reported.

Multiple employees experienced seizures in 2019, and inspectors determined they may have been exposed to toxic chemicals through inhalation, ingestion, or absorption through the skin.

The inspection identified five “serious” violations, but within a few years they were canceled or removed from records, and the matter ended in a settlement between Accurate Energetic Systems and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, The Tennessean reported.
