Genesis luxury cars are surprisingly affordable considering their specs.

play

  • Genesis produces luxury cars that rival established German luxury nameplates.
  • The least expensive models boast plenty of power and plenty of standard features.

Genesis, Hyundai’s Korean luxury car brand, has disrupted passenger car and SUV ranking lists in recent years.

Models like the electric GV60 SUV and gas-powered GV70 SUV are making their mark in their respective segments. Genesis vehicles are also becoming more competitive as the brand continues to create innovative designs and incorporate advanced technology.

Although Genesis is a luxury brand, they also have some surprisingly affordable vehicles. What is the cheapest price for a 2025 Genesis car?

2026 Genesis G70 starts at under $44,000

The most affordable car in the Genesis portfolio is the Genesis G70 compact luxury sedan. Prices start at $43,450. The G70 comes standard with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. This is incredible power for such a small vehicle. Buyers can also upgrade to a twin-turbocharged V6 engine with Sport Presige trim.

The Genesis small luxury vehicle gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway (24 MPG combined). Fuel economy is average for this segment. The Genesis G70 has an impressive exterior design and generates plenty of power. Its standard features also help the compact luxury sedan compete at the highest level of its segment.

2026 Genesis G70 Standard Features

The 2026 Genesis G70 has a great combination of ride comfort and advanced technology that makes it a luxury car worth paying the premium for.

Standard features

  • synthetic leather upholstery
  • With front seat heater
  • Proximity keyless entry with push button start
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

The G70 also has standard Brembo performance brakes, heated outside mirrors, and all-season tires. It also has a blind spot warning system, intersection collision mitigation system, and adaptive cruise control. A solid combination of safety and driver assistance technologies makes driving safer and more convenient for drivers.

2026 Genesis G70 and competitors

The G70 has many competitors, but the two most competitive models in its segment are the 2025 Acura Integra and the 2025 Audi A5. Acura’s Integra is the most affordable of the three compact luxury sedans, starting at just $33,000. We have a huge selection and are much more affordable than our competitors.

The Audi A5 is the most expensive option, starting at $49,700. It is the most sophisticated option of the three small luxury cars and has excellent driving dynamics. U.S. News & World Report named the 2025 Acura Integra the best small luxury sedan of the year, praising its “sporty personality” and “superior fuel economy.”

Should you buy the 2026 Genesis G70?

There are plenty of reasons to consider the 2026 G70 as your next vehicle, including great performance, a classy cabin, and sophisticated technology. Kelley Blue Book cites “manufacturing quality” and “standard equipment” as some of its many strengths.

A bold redesign built to stand out. The 2026 Genesis G70 combines sport and luxury like never before with Makalu Gray with Obsidian Black interior. All in all, the 2026 G70 isn’t by far the best in its segment, but it’s a strong contender and a solid offering from Genesis. Like its sibling, the G70 has helped establish the brand’s reputation in the luxury car space as it competes with more established luxury automakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

ChargePoint to debut fastest EV charger in the U.S. in 2026

Soon, you’ll be able to charge your EV in just a few minutes.

play

  • EV charging is about to get much faster in the U.S., according to ChargePoint’s CEO and president.
  • The EV Charging Network has partnered with Eaton to connect chargers to the DC power grid for faster and more efficient charging sessions.

Charging your electric vehicle is about to get even faster thanks to ChargePoint’s next-generation direct current (DC) fast charging architecture.

ChargePoint is one of America’s largest electric vehicle charging networks. The company has powered more than 9 billion miles and has plans to expand. According to the CEO, the EV charging network is not only expanding, but also getting faster.

ChargePoint will make EV charging incredibly fast in 2026

ChargePoint CEO and President Rick Wilmer calls the upcoming DC fast-charging architecture “a major innovation.” In an exclusive interview, Wilmer explained that the new 600kW (kilowatt) charging station will make converting energy to charge EVs more efficient and cost-effective. ChargePoint has partnered with global power management company Eaton to connect chargers to the DC grid.

Wilmer said this “significantly reduces the size of the charger relative to the amount of power it delivers,” and the increased efficiency saves drivers and charging station hosts money on electricity bills. These 600 kW charging stations will be installed at ChargePoint Express Grid locations and can charge passenger EVs in just 10 minutes.

ChargePoint plans to begin delivering charging station components in the second half of 2026. Faster EV charging is just around the corner as the company expands its network and develops stations capable of more powerful electric vehicle charging sessions.

How fast will EV chargers be in 2025?

Level 1 and Level 2 chargers remain the most common types of electric vehicle chargers in America. DC fast chargers are less common, but can charge an EV from 10% to 80% in less than an hour, depending on the wattage of the charger.

level 1 charger level 2 charger Level 3 DC Fast Charger ChargePoint Express Grid Charger
Average charging time when using a high wattage charger More than 24 hours (partial charge) 2-3 hours (partial charge) Within 30 minutes (partial charge) Within 10 minutes (partial charge)

ChargePoint’s Express Grid charger significantly reduces DC charging time due to its high wattage (600 kwh) and efficiency. While high wattage chargers are not recommended for regular use due to battery issues, having access to fast charging from time to time can be a game changer for EV owners.

What ChargePoint’s Express Grid means for American EVs

ChargePoint’s Express Grid shows that EV charging infrastructure is improving despite the current administration’s lack of support for clean energy. Thanks to technological advancements from companies like ChargePoint, EV chargers are now faster and more efficient.

While the EV charging experience may not yet be simple for the general public, companies are paving the way for cheaper, easier, and more convenient EV charging sessions.

In China, drivers can take advantage of BYD Auto’s megawatt charging. These charging systems provide 1,000 kilowatts of power at 1,000 volts. Megawatt charging gives you about 250 miles of driving range in 5 minutes.

The U.S. may soon catch China’s EV partial charging time record of 5 minutes. As EV nameplates become more prevalent in the U.S., charging improvements may not be needed as much for rapid adoption.

LendingTree CEO Doug Levda dies in ATV accident on family farm

0

LendingTree CEO and Chairman Doug Lebda died on Sunday, October 12, in an “all-terrain vehicle accident” at his family’s farm in North Carolina, the company confirmed.

“Doug is a visionary leader whose relentless drive, innovation and passion transformed the financial services landscape and impacted the lives of millions of consumers,” LendingTree’s board of directors said in a statement Monday, Oct. 13.

Mr. Levda, 55, founded the company, which provides a marketplace for mortgages and other financial products, in 1996 after “experiencing the frustration and complexity of obtaining a first-time mortgage,” according to the Wall Street Journal, according to his bio on the company’s website.

LendingTree was founded in 1998 and went public in 2000. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company was subsequently sold to IAC/InterActiveCorp in 2003 and spun off as an independent company in 2008. Following the sale, Mr. Lebeda served as president and chief operating officer of IAC before returning to LendingTree in the spin-off.

“His passion will continue to inspire us as we move forward together. Our hearts go out to Doug’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” the board said.

Megan Levda told The Associated Press in a statement that her husband was “a wonderful man with a heart so big that he seemed to have room for everyone he met.”

“Our hearts are broken and we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from around the world,” she said.

LendingTree announces successor following CEO’s death

The company announced in a statement that its board of directors has named Steve Ozonian, a lead independent director, to replace Mr. Levda as chairman, and appointed Scott Paley, chief operating officer and president, to fill Mr. Levda’s role as chief executive officer.

“The news of our loss of Doug was devastating,” Piley said in a statement. “But one of the most immediate impacts of his legacy is the strong management team he has put in place at LendingTree.”

The board said it will work closely with Piley and the management team to respect Mr. Levda’s vision for the company. “We are committed to upholding his legacy and continuing the work he started with passion, integrity and dedication,” the board said.

According to the Associated Press, Levda is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Nissan, Ford, Stellantis consider partnership for hybrid Rogue SUV

Automotive News reports that Nissan is considering partnering with Ford and Stellantis to build a hybrid compact crossover in Smyrna, Tennessee.

A potential partnership between Ford and Jeep’s parent company would see the Rogue crossover equipped with Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, two people familiar with the matter told Automotive News.

Automotive News reported that the vehicle will be assembled at the company’s Smyrna plant, but Nissan spokeswoman Lorin Love-Carter would not confirm a formal agreement.

“We are evaluating options to maximize the value of our breakthrough ePower hybrid technology for the U.S. market, with an initial focus on the Rogue and future Infiniti crossovers,” Love-Carter told The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. “As hybrid vehicle sales volumes are expected to increase in the coming years, we are exploring options to localize both vehicle and powertrain production.”

Nissan’s website claims the Nissan ePower is a “more fuel efficient” vehicle that can travel up to 759 miles on a full tank.

“We remain open to dialogue that provides strategic and complementary market opportunities to our core model development efforts,” Love-Carter said. “At this time, no agreements have been signed regarding production at the U.S. factory.”

The report comes on the heels of a strong third quarter in which demand for compact crossovers reached an all-time high.

From July to September, Nissan Group’s total sales reached 223,377 units, an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

In the third quarter, Nissan’s sales increased 2.2% year over year, while Infiniti’s sales decreased 9.2%.

The Nashville-based company saw sales of its compact crossover, the Kicks, increase 37%, the highest since its launch. Additionally, over the summer, Murano and Rogue crossover sales increased by 167.5% and 8.9%, respectively.

“SUVs and trucks led the way in the quarter with competitive pricing, refreshed designs and an array of consumer-focused features that resonate with today’s buyers,” according to the release.

The Pathfinder SUV, Armada SUV, and Frontier pickup were all on the rise, with third-quarter sales up 33.2%, 24%, and 19.2%, respectively. As we head into the fourth quarter, Nissan is gearing up for the next-generation Leaf and Sentra, which will go on sale in the coming months. This is the first year that the Leaf will not be produced in Tennessee since it debuted at the Smyrna plant in 2013.

Mariners vs. Blue Jays live score, Jorge Polanco home run, ALCS Channel

The Seattle Mariners will go home with an overwhelming advantage in the American League Championship Series.

The pitcher-heavy team crushed the Toronto Blue Jays in every facet of the game, hitting three home runs and en route to a 10-3 victory in Game 2 at Rogers Center on October 13th.

And now history is overwhelmingly on their side.

They will take a 2-0 lead at home to T-Mobile Park, knowing that teams that win their first two road games have advanced 86.8% of the time in LCS history.

They can thank Jorge Polanco and an arguably unparalleled bullpen for a happy return to the Pacific Northwest.

Polanco hit a three-run home run off relief pitcher Lewis Burland in the top of the sixth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie. Polanco also provided the go-ahead run and a solid RBI in Seattle’s 3-1 win in Game 1.

And for the second straight game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider’s midgame gambit didn’t work.

On a night when Kevin Guzman was removed after just 76 pitches, the reliever may have been too hesitant to remove rookie Trey Yesavage after only allowing a run, but he allowed an infield hit and then intentionally walked Cal Lowry before Berland allowed Polanco to make the deciding hit.

Polanco, who was re-signed after the Mariners declined his option a year ago, is now 4-for-9 with five RBIs in this series and has eight hits and 11 RBIs in the postseason, including six game-winning or game-winning runs.

Seattle’s bullpen, on the other hand, gave up 6 scoreless innings and 1 hit relief, resulting in 9 scoreless innings in this series. Eduardo Buzzard and Carlos Vargas were particularly solid, contributing two innings each, allowing just one hit and one walk.

All of that combined to hold Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero hitless in seven at bats in this series.

Where to watch Mariners vs. Blue Jays: TV Channels, Live Streams

Game 2 will be broadcast on Fox and Fox Sports 1 and can be streamed on Fubo.

On Thanksgiving Day in Canada, an Ontario player may have put the Toronto Blue Jays to sleep in Game 2 of the ALCS.

Mississauga native Josh Naylor hit a two-run home run into the right-field seats in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Seattle Mariners a 9-3 lead and further silencing the Rogers Center crowd.

Naylor’s home run off Braydon Fisher was the Mariners’ third home run of the game, following three runs by Julio Rodriguez in the first inning and Jorge Polanco in the fifth.

Now, the Mariners’ stout bullpen needs a six-point lead with nine outs to go before heading home with a 2-0 lead in the ALCS.

The Seattle Mariners continue to gain momentum and move closer to a commanding lead in the ALCS.

Pinch hitter Mitch Garber, a balding 34-year-old part-time DH, hit a triple against the center field wall, and JP Crawford sent pinch runner Leo Rivas home, giving Seattle a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

After starter Logan Gilbert left the game in the third inning, Eduardo Buzzard did his job in the Mariners’ bullpen, pitching two innings with one hit in relief.

Jorge Polanco could single-handedly lead the Seattle Mariners offense to a 2-0 ALCS lead.

With Seattle leading 6-3 at the midpoint of Game 2, Polanco broke a tie with a three-run home run, the Mariners’ second of the night.

Polanco hit first and scored an insurance run in a 3-1 victory in Game 1. That night, he faced Blue Jays set ace Lewis Berland, with one out and runners on first and second base.

He sent the pitch just over the high wall of the right field seats, turning a 3-3 tie into a 6-3 Blue Jays lead.

For the Seattle Mariners to win back-to-back games in the first two games of the ALCS in Toronto, their bullpen will need to stay in shape for six innings.

Manager Dan Wilson, perhaps feeling confident after throwing six innings from starter Bryce Miller the night before, pulled starter Logan Gilbert after three innings and 58 pitches.

Eduardo Bazardo replaced Gilbert in the fourth inning and pitched a scoreless game, increasing the number of perfect frames by Seattle’s bullpen to four in this ALCS.

The game remained tied at 3-3 at the top of the 5th inning.

It took just two innings for the Toronto Blue Jays to cancel out Julio Rodriguez’s three-run homer.

Game 2 of the ALCS was tied 3-3 heading into the third inning, but Ernie Clement led off with a single from the bottom of the second inning, and Nathan Rooks’ RBI hit allowed him to come back and score.

Although the scores are tied, the starting pitchers have different tendencies. Mariners starter Logan Gilbert has already thrown 46 pitches and allowed six runners. Blue Jays starting pitcher Trey Yesavage also needed 46 pitches to pitch two innings, but needed only 13 pitches to send his team out in the second inning.

As bad as it was for the Seattle Mariners, the Toronto Blue Jays’ batting lineup didn’t remain sluggish forever. After Julio Rodriguez’s 3-run homer in the first inning, they counterattacked with two runs in the bottom. George Springer hit a leadoff double, Nathan Rooks had an infield hit, Springer scored on an error, and Alejandro Kirk hit an RBI fielder over right field to score Rooks.

After the first inning: Trey Yesavage needed 33 pitches to end the inning, while Logan Gilbert threw 19, giving the Mariners three runs and the Blue Jays two.

Trey Yesavage is no longer perfect – and Mariners are positioned to take a commanding lead in the ALCS

The Blue Jays’ rookie right-hander, who was nearly perfect in his playoff debut against New York, was quickly overwhelmed in Game 2 of the ALCS, throwing the infamous split-finger pitch to Julio Rodriguez, who crushed it for a three-run home run.

Yesavage, 22, had started just three games in the major leagues before pitching 5 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts and a no-hitter against the Yankees, but he knew almost immediately that this game would be different. The Mariners remained patient out of the gate even as Yesavage struck out Randy Arozarena on a full-count pitch and then walked Cal Lowry.

Jesavage then went 0-for-2 against Rodriguez, throwing a splitter to one mainland and making yet another fatal mistake, which Rodriguez dangled to lead it narrowly down the left field line.

Granted, there are still eight and a half games left, but it’s not too early to think about it. Of the 38 teams that won their first two LCS games on the road, 33 (86.8%) advanced to the World Series.

Trey Yesavage, who will start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners, began his press conference prior to the game by condemning the attacks and negative behavior toward his loved ones since his fourth no-hitter in the major leagues against the New York Yankees.

“Living in this world where there are so many different opinions and emotions and that breeds so much hatred, it’s sad to see people close to you being attacked because of their performance on the field,” Yesabezi told reporters. “Whether it’s my parents, my siblings, my girlfriend, my family, these people have done nothing to warrant denying my actions. It’s really sad.

“I know I have a platform to address this issue, so that’s what I am. I hope people can understand that those people have nothing to do with what’s going on on the field or anything else.”

“If there’s a problem, I’m a guy and I’m open to whatever opinion anyone has about me or my life. So I just wanted to get it out.” — Gabe Lux

Seattle is one of five teams to never win the World Series and the only club in Major League Baseball to never even advance to the Fall Classic.

The Mariners were founded in 1977 and first reached the playoffs in 1995. This year will be Seattle’s fourth ALCS appearance, after losing in 1995 (Cleveland), 2000 (Yankees) and 2001 (Yankees).

The Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series in 1992 and 1993.

They won their first title in 1992 by defeating the Atlanta Braves in six games, then defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games, clinching the championship on Joe Carter’s walk-off home run.

Game 2 of the ALCS will be and 5:03 p.m. Monday, October 13th.

Former presidents don’t praise Trump for Israel-Hamas ceasefire

play

On the day the last remaining Israeli hostage returned home after two years in captivity and both Israelis and Palestinians celebrated the end of the Israel-Hamas war, many American elder statesmen and politicians remained silent.

World leaders praised President Donald Trump’s efforts, but the former Democratic president (and presidential candidate) did not discuss his successor’s role in brokering a ceasefire or taking important steps toward a peace agreement.

For example, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi awarded President Trump the Order of the Nile, Egypt’s highest national honor for extraordinary public service to the nation and humanity.

However, until 3:15 p.m. On October 13, ET, more than 12 hours after the hostages were released, there was no acknowledgment on social media from former Presidents Obama, Clinton, or Biden. Former Republican President George W. Bush also did not support Trump or 2024 Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, but he did not publicly acknowledge Trump’s efforts.

The agreement to release the hostages came after several failed attempts to end the two-year war, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages.

Subsequent Israeli attacks on Hamas in the Gaza Strip have left more than 66,000 Palestinians dead, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

This week, 20 Israeli hostages returned from Gaza and about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel arrived in the first phase of a US-brokered ceasefire plan.

Some former leaders actually responded to the Trump administration’s plans for the region. Four days before the hostages were released, President Obama said, without naming Trump himself, “We should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is in sight.”

Reaction from Trump supporters on social media was swift.

“Obama hails the peace deal reached in Gaza, but doesn’t mention or give credit to the man who made it possible, Donald J. Trump,” said one social media user.

White House communications director Stephen Chan responded to Obama’s post simply by saying, “Say his name…President Donald J. Trump.”

Of course, Trump doesn’t tend to praise Democratic lawmakers. The president has a long history of going after Obama, starting with the birther conspiracy theory. Trump has also repeatedly accused the former president of treason after defeating Hillary Clinton in 2016, claiming without evidence that the former president and his aides fabricated information to politicize him.

The president also had a habit of giving his opponents offensive nicknames, such as “Sleepy Joe” and “Crooked Hillary.”

In an Oct. 11 interview with CBS, Clinton called the cease-fire plan an “important first step” and said she praised President Trump, his administration, and Arab leaders in the region.

Some Democrats praised Trump more explicitly on Monday.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Florida, said “a weight has been lifted from the world” and that it was a “great day” for the families of the hostages. “And thank you to @POTUS and all the negotiators who made this day possible,” he wrote in a post to X.

Sen. Jon Ossoff, Democrat of Georgia, issued a statement on October 13 saying that the ceasefire and hostage release had raised hopes for “lasting peace in Gaza,” adding that he applauded “the efforts of the Trump administration and international partners to achieve this moment.”

World leaders praise Trump’s ‘uncompromising efforts for peace’

Many world leaders praised Trump once the hostages were freed, including some who had disagreements with him in recent months amid tariff negotiations.

“After more than two years in captivity, we welcome the release of all the hostages. Their freedom is a testament to the courage of their families, President Trump’s uncompromising efforts for peace, and Prime Minister Netanyahu’s determination,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a letter to X.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke passionately about President Trump at a summit in Egypt. He also immediately nominated Trump as a candidate for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his “deep sense of relief that the hostages have been freed” on October 13.

“It is now critical that we work together to implement President Trump’s Gaza peace plan,” he wrote to X.

Family sues Stellantis over hybrid Jeep recall dispute

0

play

  • After months of arbitration over the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE, a family is suing Jeep parent Stellantis.
  • The vehicle lost power on the highway in May and has been in the shop ever since.

A Monroe, Michigan man has been paying more than $1,000 a month since May for a car he can’t drive.

PJ Phillips, 34, said his 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE, which he bought to support his growing family (the couple recently had a child), became stranded on the highway in May when his wife “just turned off” while driving in the passing lane.

The family’s car had been sitting in the store for several months, prompting a lawsuit against Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis.

Phillips and his wife aren’t the only hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee drivers facing problems related to sudden loss of drive. More than 91,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with 4XE technology are currently being recalled for this issue. Prior to this, in October 2024, the same vehicle was subject to a separate recall due to the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Although the power loss recall was only announced last month, Phillips said his car lost power in May. Since then, Phillips said he has been paying more than $1,000 a month in insurance and car payments while his car is on the dealership lot. Meanwhile, Phillips has been in arbitration with Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, which is currently in litigation, a process Phillips described as a “nightmare.”

“I’ve been trying since day one to do this honestly, outside of the public legal system, and (Stellantis) has thwarted me every time,” Phillips said.

Hybrid Grand Cherokee that lost power

Stellantis was the first to formally identify the problem and filed a recall with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration on September 4th.

According to recall documents, 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid vehicles may experience a software error in an internal technology called the hybrid control processor. As Phillips’ wife experienced, this error can lead to a sudden loss of drive power and, in some cases, a collision.

In response to this issue, Stellantis has issued a discontinuation notice to dealers, and unless the issue is resolved, dealers will no longer be able to sell PHEV Grand Cherokees from the past five model years.

Frank Machok, Stellantis’ safety and manufacturing spokesperson, said remedies are available for at least some affected models. Grand Cherokees from 2022 to 2024 models are ready for repair. Fixed versions of the 2025 and 2026 Grand Cherokees, which are also subject to the recall, will be available “in the coming weeks.”

Stellantis and NHTSA estimate that about 1% of the more than 91,000 hybrid Grand Cherokees recalled are affected by this issue.

Stellantis said the only Stellantis vehicles affected by the sudden loss of power are 2022-2026 plug-in Jeep Grand Cherokees. Although the Wrangler 4XE shares the same hardware, the root of the problem was a software communication error unique to the Grand Cherokee.

Still paying

Phillips said his family’s Grand Cherokee spun out of control in May while his wife was driving.

Phillips and Stellantis went to arbitration between May and July. This is a standard private proceeding under Michigan’s lemon law and takes place outside the regular court system. Phillips and the automaker went back and forth over the vehicles, and the arbitrator settled with a repurchase agreement that Phillips deemed unfair.

At the end of July, Phillips took the matter to court and filed a lawsuit. A circuit court judge subsequently reversed the arbitrator’s award, finding that the arbitrator had overstepped his authority and rendered an unjust award.

Meanwhile, Phillips’ car remains in the shop, paying more than $1,000 a month in car payments and insurance for an unusable car. Missing lease payments will hurt your credit score, he said, so you need insurance in case your vehicle is damaged while it’s at the dealership.

“We’re now paying $1,000 a month on a car that we lost ownership of,” Phillips said, adding that he currently drives a 2012 Scion XB from college with 146,000 miles and his wife a 2010 Ford Edge with 200,000 miles.

“It’s kind of gut-wrenching for a middle-class family, right?” Phillips said.

“I just want fairness and safety for my family and other people in the same situation,” Phillips said. In September, Phillips began communicating directly with Jeep customer service representatives. The agent told Phillips he could expect to hear from him, but text records reviewed by the Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, show the agent read Phillips’ texts and stopped responding.

“He assured me that he would contact me and that they were going to resolve this issue,” Phillips said. “But now they ignore me.”

Mr. Stellantis told the Free Press that Mr. Phillips had stopped replying to messages because he had “unresolved legal issues” with the company related to a recent arbitration settlement and lawsuit filed alleging fraud.

The company said that in accordance with its protocols, future communications must be made through an attorney.

Regarding the Philips experience, Machok said, “Stellantis is committed to providing a positive customer experience. … We remain committed to remaining engaged and working towards a solution that is acceptable to all parties.”

Stellantis technicians officially began repairing Phillips’ car on September 29, about five months after it first lost power on the highway and less than a month after the NHTSA recall began.

Despite a near accident, lawsuits and a “frustrating” arbitration, Phillips said he would consider driving a Jeep again.

But as he spends more days without a car and more and more car bills arrive, Phillips said his trust in the brand is wavering.

“I’m from Toledo and I’ve always loved the Jeep brand,” Phillips said. “But the way I was treated in this situation was really unfair and it will be a while before I can give them another chance.”

How will Department of Education cuts affect special education, 504 plans, and IEPs?

0

From 504 plans to IEPs, there are many safeguards in place at the local level to ensure that students with disabilities have the resources they need. But federal oversight is a key piece of the puzzle.

play

WASHINGTON – Families and educators across the country were left in a state of uncertainty over the weekend after the federal Department of Education laid off nearly all employees in the government’s special education sector.

Nearly the entire Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, including the Office of Special Education Programs, was laid off, according to agency employees and their unions.

Many employees in the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights work to protect students with disabilities from discrimination, the union said. Affected departments included offices in the District of Columbia, Seattle, and Atlanta.

The Ministry of Education has not yet officially confirmed the details of the layoffs. Many government agency spokespeople are on furlough due to the ongoing government shutdown and did not respond to requests for comment.

The cuts, which are being challenged in court, are part of the Trump administration’s efforts to pressure Congressional Democrats to end the government shutdown, which is entering its third week.

The cuts sparked widespread anxiety about the future of federal oversight of special education programs and the billions of dollars in funding states and schools are entitled to. Advocates recently emphasized that funding needs multiple layers of oversight to ensure students with disabilities have access to the resources they need to learn safely and effectively.

For decades, offices with these responsibilities have employed strong teams. They were largely spared from the Department of Education’s first round of major cuts in March.

But Dennis Marshall, CEO of the Parent Lawyers and Advocates Council, a national advocacy group for students with disabilities, said after this weekend, “you can count them on one hand.”

How will staff cuts affect children’s services?

To be clear, nothing has changed in federal civil rights law. Students with disabilities still have a legal right to a “free and appropriate public education,” a standard set by a landmark half-century-old law known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The law continues to require Congress to pay for a portion of the average per-pupil cost of special education, which costs billions of dollars each year.

The difference after recent layoffs is that the people and systems in charge of those jobs have been turned upside down.

“IDEA still exists,” special education advocate and lobbyist Lisa Lightner wrote in a blog post Sunday. “But what about the people who were previously helping with enforcement? Most, if not all, of them, pending the final tally, have just been laid off. That means there’s less oversight of the state, less technical assistance, and fewer resources.”

“The law went nowhere,” she explained. “But our backup was successful.”

Katie Nias, a former senior official in the Department of Education’s special education division, warned that parents need to be careful.

“The reason we have federal special education laws is because states don’t educate students with disabilities,” she told USA TODAY. “This is a time when parents need to get serious and prepare to be the most active advocates for their children ever.”

What about IEPs, 504 plans?

Parents of students with disabilities, of whom there are millions in the United States, are often familiar with several key terms.

One of these is the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The other is a Section 504 plan. Both are similar types of blueprints that ensure that students with disabilities attending K-12 schools have the resources and accommodations they need, at no cost to their parents.

Don’t worry, 504 plans and IEPs are not going away. These are required by federal law but are implemented at the local level.

Here’s the problem. Not all schools follow the law correctly. It may also be due to discrimination. Other times, it’s because educators don’t necessarily understand what special education laws require.

Let me give you an example. In Wyoming, the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights intervened when a school tried to delay an IEP meeting for a kindergartener who uses a wheelchair. Without the department’s intervention, the student would not have been in school, said Catherine Ramon, who led the department for many years.

“Historically, for decades, families have been able to come to the federal government and get relief without having to hire a lawyer,” she told USA TODAY. “These cuts will leave families unable to rely on it.”

Still, advocates said families should continue to file civil rights complaints with the Department of Education if they believe their children are being discriminated against. Some educational institutions in each state have a means to report suspected civil rights violations.

IDEA funds have already been disbursed

A big part of special education is money, specifically the federal funding stream created by IDEA.

Thanks to this law, billions of dollars flow from the federal government to states each year, which then distributes the funds to local school districts. These dollars pay for all kinds of expenses, including staff salaries, special equipment, and support for student health services.

The National Association of Special Education Directors says the latest IDEA funding went to states before recent layoffs.

“We should have funding for next year,” said Audrey Revose, the association’s senior director of government relations. But she cautioned that “sometimes glitches happen, sometimes questions arise, and someone from the Department of Education needs to intervene.”

She said the people who paid the money in the first place and those who traditionally helped solve problems for states and school districts seem to be gone.

It’s not clear whether states are ready to deal with what happens next, or what direction the Department of Education’s broader plans will take moving forward. Historically, special education departments at the state level have been subject to stress and turnover, Revors said. For years, the Department of Education’s Office of Special Education was different.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has repeatedly expressed support for IDEA.

“I would like to see more money go to states for that,” she told CNN in March.

Taylor Swift breaks Billboard record for most albums in one week

0

Taylor Swift has thanked fans for the “lovely bouquet” of flowers after setting a new record. This time it’s “The Life of a Showgirl.”

The album officially marks her 15th top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, Billboard reported on Monday, October 13th. Swift’s latest album, released on Oct. 3, debuted with 4.02 million equivalent album units (including pure album sales and streaming activity) in the U.S. for the week ending Oct. 9, according to Luminate.

“Four million words of gratitude to my fans and four million reasons to be more proud of this album than ever,” Swift said in an Instagram post on Monday, Oct. 13. “Thank you for celebrating this project by going to the theater, investing in the record, streaming the record, watching the video, buying the CD, reading the poem I wrote on the inside of the package, and soaking in ‘The Life of a Showgirl.'” I will always cherish this feeling. ”

“I will cherish this feeling forever,” Swift added. “That’s amazing.”

On December 31, 2023, she overtook Elvis for the most weeks at the top of the charts, second only to the Beatles. Today, the album dethroned Netflix’s “Kpop Demon Hunters” soundtrack, which fell to second place.

Of the 4 million album units, nearly 3.5 million were pure album sales. Specifically, a total of 3,479,500. The record for album sales in a single week was previously set by Adele’s 25 in 2015.

“I’ll never forget the excitement I felt when my first album sold 40,000 copies in its first week in 2006,” Swift wrote on Monday. “Since I was 16 years old, I could never have imagined that so many people would be interested enough in my music to invest their time and energy. Since then, I have tried to meet and thank as many people as possible for giving me the opportunity to pursue this crazy dream.”

According to Billboard, all songs from “The Life of a Showgirl” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, occupying the top 12 spots. This marked a new milestone for Swift, allowing “The Life of a Showgirl” to remain at the top of the charts.

“The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Father Figure” and “Wood” round out the top five.

To promote “The Life of a Showgirl,” Swift partnered with TikTok, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon to host fan events, including a Los Angeles pop-up, a New York pop-up, a lyrical scavenger hunt, and an Orange Cardigan fan event, respectively.

The singer also appeared on “The Graham Norton Show” and numerous radio stations in London, and after returning to the United States a few days later appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

In conjunction with “The Life of a Showgirl,” Taylor partnered with AMC Theatres, Regal and Cinemark to produce her own film, “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” which topped the box office in its opening weekend.

Which American car companies still sell V8s?

0

play

V8 engines are a staple of American car culture.

Large motors have been around for more than a century due to their high volume, high power numbers, and versatility. V8 engines are less common than they used to be, as car companies move toward smaller engine displacements, stricter emissions standards, and electrification. Many 8-cylinder cars are still being made, but these days there are fewer and fewer cars to choose from.

Here are some of the remaining V8 engines you can still buy new from the American automaker for the 2026 model year.

Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

The CT5-V Blackwing uses the same 6.2-liter V8 found in other GM vehicles. This supercharged car takes it to the next level, reaching 668 horsepower. If you really want to experience what this car is capable of, consider the six-speed manual version.

cadillac escalade

The Escalade has used a V8 since its debut in 1999, and nothing has changed with the current generation. If you want more of the excitement of a luxury SUV, consider the Escalade V. It has a supercharger and has a louder exhaust note than most muscle cars.

chevrolet corvette

It just doesn’t feel right that a V8 isn’t in a Corvette.

New powertrains for the C8 generation seem to be popping up quite often now. The Stingray uses a basic 6.2-liter V8, the Z06 opts for a 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8, the e-Ray uses hybrid assist, and the ZR1 gets twin turbochargers. Outperforming them all in terms of performance is the ZR1x, which reaches 1,250 horsepower thanks to its twin-turbo setup and hybrid system.

Chevrolet Express and GMC Savannah

These two utility vans are essentially the same vehicle and have been for years, as they have received limited exterior updates over the years. The V8s in these vans aren’t performance-based or luxury cruising-oriented, but they’re still an eight-cylinder option.

Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra

Automakers often share powertrains in vehicles built on the same platform with sister companies. Most engines found in the Silverado are also found in the GMC Sierra, including the V8.

chevrolet tahoe and suburban

Since the Suburban is just a larger version of the Tahoe, they both have the same V8 engine. The base trim is powered by a 5.3-liter V8, while the top-of-the-line High Country version is powered by a 6.2-liter V8.

dodge durango

Dodge was known for its large-block V8 engines, and that’s still the case. For the 2026 model year, all Durango models come standard with a Hemi V8. The RT comes with a 5.7-liter V8, while the SRT 392 trim comes with a 6.4-liter V8. The Hellcat Durango still exists and uses the iconic supercharged V8 with 710 horsepower.

Ford F-150

America’s best-selling vehicle offers many powertrain options. You can choose between a 5.0-liter V8 engine or a supercharged version of the Raptor R.

ford mustang

Mustangs and V8s go together like bread and butter. The new S650 generation Mustang is available with a V8 engine in GT and Dark Horse trims. Stick shift is also an option.

GMC Yukon and Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon Duo comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8, but a 6.2-liter V8 is also available as an option on AT4 and Denali trims. The Ultimate trim is equipped with a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder DURAMAX turbo diesel engine.

Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler Rubicon SRT 392

The 6.4-liter HEMI was added to the Wrangler in 2021. It will appear in Gladiator next year. The truck and SUV combination delivers 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

ram 1500

Ram trucks still have a Hemi option for those who want it. That includes the Hellcat-powered TRX, which will return in 2026.

Four men will be executed in the United States this week. what did they do?

0

Arizona, Missouri, Mississippi and Florida will all carry out executions this week. The inmate’s victims include four family members, a female college student who was kidnapped from her bedroom, and a state trooper.

play

Four people are scheduled to be executed this week in the United States, in what is the busiest month for executions in nearly 15 years.

On Tuesday, October 14th, Missouri and Florida are scheduled to execute inmates within an hour of each other. Another execution is scheduled for the next day in Mississippi, and one in Arizona will take place on Friday. The inmate victims include a family of four, a female college student who was kidnapped from her bedroom, and a state trooper who was ambushed in his driveway.

Seven of these were executed this month. If all of this is brought forward, it would be the busiest month for executions in the United States since May 2011. That’s according to a USA TODAY analysis of a database maintained by the Death Penalty Information Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks the death penalty in the United States without taking a position.

The busy October comes amid an overall increase in executions in 2025, with experts attributing the rise to the political climate under President Donald Trump, and an expansion of execution methods. So far this year, the state has executed 35 inmates, a number not seen since 2014.

Here’s what you need to know about this week’s execution.

Lance Shockley of Missouri

Lance Shockley, 48, was convicted in 2005 of killing 37-year-old Sgt. Carl “Dwayne” Graham Jr. of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Graham, the father of a 4-year-old boy at the time, was ambushed and shot in the back with a high-powered rifle as he arrived at his home in the small rural town of Van Buren. He was then shot in the head.

Prosecutors argued that Mr. Shockley’s motive for killing Mr. Graham was that he was being investigated as the prime suspect in a case where police left the scene of a fatal accident.

Shockley has always maintained that he is innocent of murder. At trial, his attorney told jurors there was no ballistic or physical evidence linking Shockley to Graham’s murder, no witnesses to the crime, no DNA and no confession.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that the circumstantial evidence in the case was “strong” and sufficient to uphold the death sentence.

Mr. Shockley’s current lawyers are fighting for DNA testing of evidence in the case that was not available in 2005, and argue there should have been a mistrial due to misconduct by the jury foreman who shared his book about revenge killings with his fellow jurors.

So far, no court has allowed DNA testing, and last month the Missouri Court of Appeals refused to consider multiple briefs from forensic DNA experts in the case.

“There remain serious and unanswered questions about Lance Shockley’s guilt,” Shockley’s attorney, TC Tansky, said in a statement. “He was convicted on purely circumstantial evidence, questionable forensic methods, and a timeline that in no way matched the facts or testimony. Modern DNA testing could help answer those questions once and for all, but the state of Missouri rejects it.”

He added: “We will never know the truth until the evidence is tested.”

Shockley is scheduled to be executed in Missouri on October 14th, marking the state’s first execution in more than a year.

Samuel Lee Smithers of Florida

Samuel Lee Smithers, 72, was convicted of murdering two Tampa women, Denise Roach, 24, and Christy Cowan, 31, in 1996.

Smithers, a married deacon at a church in the Tampa suburb of Plant City, partially confessed to murdering two women who were sex workers and dumping them in a Plant City pond.

According to court records, Smithers told police that during an argument over money that Cowan had borrowed for sex, he hit her over the head with an ax, threw her into a pond and “finished her off” with a garden hoe.

Smithers told police he also got into an argument with Roach, punched her and threw her into a pond, but testified in court that he watched another man kill her. At trial, he blamed the man for Cowan’s murder and said Cowan had been blackmailing him.

Smithers’ current lawyers argue that executing the elderly violates constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment and no longer serves the original purpose of the death penalty.

Smithers is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on October 14th. He became the 14th inmate executed this year in Florida, a record.

Charles Ray Crawford of Mississippi

Charles Ray Crawford, 59, was convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering 20-year-old college student Christy Ray in 1993.

Crawford was on bail for assaulting two young women when he broke into Ray’s bedroom window at her parents’ home in the small rural town of Chalybeate. She was found stabbed to death in a nearby forest.

Ray was a student at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

The Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, part of the USA TODAY network, reported that at trial, Crawford’s attorney found Crawford guilty, laying the groundwork for an insanity defense, even though Crawford did not want to be in the case.

Crawford’s lawyers argued that he deserved a new trial because of the conduct of his trial attorney.

“Charles Crawford’s constitutional right to make the most basic choices about whether and how to protect his life and liberty was violated,” attorney Beth Windham said in court documents.

Crawford is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection in Mississippi on October 15, marking the state’s second execution this year.

Richard Jarf of Arizona

Richard Jarf, 55, was convicted of murdering a family of four in Phoenix in 1993: Albert Luna Sr., his wife Patricia Luna, and their two children, 17-year-old Rochelle and 5-year-old Damien. Gelf targeted his roommate Albert Luna Jr.’s family, believing them to have stolen from him.

Gelf admitted to tying up Patricia and Damian Luna while they were alone in the house. When Rochelle returned home, he admitted to tying her to a bed, raping her, and slitting her throat before going out and shooting Damien dead in front of his mother. When Albert Luna Sr. arrived at the house, Mr. Gelf attacked him with a bat and a scuffle ensued, during which Mr. Gelf was stabbed, he said. Gelf manages to end the fight by shooting Luna in the head.

Albert Luna Jr. was the one who discovered the bodies of his parents and brother.

In a handwritten statement provided to The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, Gelf said he had no intention of trying to stop the execution and that he hoped his death would “bring some peace” to the victims’ families.

“I broke into the Luna family’s home and brutally murdered four innocent people in a cruel, heinous and vile manner,” Jarf said in a statement. “I became so obsessed with revenge that I couldn’t think of anything else.”

Experts said they diagnosed him with brain dysfunction, but said that didn’t mean he deserved to live.

“The results of this test may help explain why I did what I did,” he wrote. “But they can never forgive me for the harm I caused.”

Gelf is the second execution this year in Arizona and is scheduled to be executed on Friday, October 17th.

Are military personnel getting paid on October 15th? What we know

0

play

Although the federal government remains partially shut down, the Trump administration announced on Saturday, October 11, that it will pay soldiers by accessing unspent funds set aside for research and development.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday, Oct. 13, that the government shutdown is impacting the nation. “It’s getting serious. It’s starting to affect the real economy,” he told Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.”

Bessent added that to allow U.S. military personnel to be paid, the government would have to withhold payments to other federal employees and services such as the Smithsonian Institution and the National Zoo.

“We’re going to have to adjust things a lot. We’re going to have to furlough workers here in Washington, D.C. and across the country,” Bessent said in an interview.

What did the president say?

In an Oct. 11 Truth Social post, President Trump said he was using his authority as commander in chief to direct Army Secretary Pete Hegseth to “use all available funds to pay our troops on Oct. 15.”

“We have identified funding for that, and Secretary Hegseth will use it to pay for our troops,” Trump said.

Given the number of people involved, the bill needs to be passed by Monday, October 13, in order for soldiers’ salaries to be processed on time, according to Reuters. However, because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, Congress is not in session, meaning the bill will not be passed.

How many soldiers were going to go without pay?

There are approximately 1.3 million active duty members of the U.S. military. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of National Guard and non-military personnel employed by the Department of the Army (formerly known as the Department of Defense) are also at risk of losing pay.

On October 9, a woman who identified herself as a military wife confronted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) during a speech on C-SPAN.

“As a Republican, I’m very disappointed in my party and I’m very disappointed in you because you have the power to recall the House,” the woman told Johnson, adding that her two children, who have serious medical conditions, “could die.” “You refuse it, it’s just for show.”

Are military personnel still working?

Military personnel have continued to work during the shutdown because their roles are considered essential to national security. The military is expected to receive back pay once the government shutdown ends.

Congress determines military pay rates. According to Reuters, some members of Congress have recently pushed for a 3.8% raise for military personnel as part of a national defense authorization bill expected to be passed by the end of the year. The bill has support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.Contributors: Bart Jansen, Joey Garrison, Mike Snider. Reuters

Did Ivanka Trump convert to Judaism? Donald Trump told Congress:

0

play

  • Ivanka Trump converted to Judaism after dating her current husband, Jared Kushner.
  • Donald Trump highlighted his daughter’s conversion in a recent speech to the Israeli parliament.
  • Ivanka Trump recently visited Israel, visiting the Western Wall and speaking at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv.

President Donald Trump spotlighted his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, during his speech at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, on October 13th.

The president traveled to the Middle East to greet Israeli hostages released as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that the United States helped broker.

Donald Trump said of his son-in-law: “I want to give a special thank you to someone who loves Israel so much. In fact, he loves Israel so much that his daughter converted.” “They have a great marriage and are very close. They are best friends.”

Ivanka Trump and Kushner both served as advisers to President Trump during his first term, but have been largely absent from Washington this year. Compared to President Trump’s high-profile mentions in Congress, Ivanka is typically more circumspect about her faith. Here’s what we know:

Did Ivanka Trump convert to Judaism?

yes. Her husband, Jared Kushner, is Jewish and converted before they married in 2009.

In a 2015 interview with Vogue, she said she avoided discussing her faith publicly, instead finding it deeply personal.

“We’re pretty observant, more than some people and less than others, and we feel like that’s a very intimate thing for us,” she said. “This was a great life decision for me. I’m very modern, but I’m also very traditional, and I think that’s an interesting juxtaposition in my upbringing as well. I really found that Judaism creates a great blueprint for family connections.”

In her 2017 book, Working Women: Rewriting the Rules for Success, she discussed observing the Jewish Sabbath with your family and spending that time spending time together.

Ivanka Trump’s husband Jared Kushner is Jewish

Ivanka Trump’s husband Jared Kushner’s religion is Orthodox Judaism.

Kushner wrote in his 2022 memoir, “Breaking History,” that he once broke up with Ivanka Trump over religious differences. But the two got back together, and by the time Kushner met Donald Trump for lunch in hopes of forging a stronger bond, she was already on the verge of a change of heart, he wrote.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump were married in 2009 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

“He respected Jewish traditions and asked Ivanka to wear a yarmulke before she walked down the aisle,” Kushner wrote of her father-in-law in his memoir.

Ivanka Trump takes a step back from politics after her first term

Ivanka Trump served as a senior adviser to the president during his first term and frequently appeared alongside him. By the end of her term, she came under attack for assuming an unofficial diplomat-like role on important foreign trips. Kushner was also a senior adviser to the president.

Ivanka Trump is the eldest of the president’s two daughters. Her mother was Donald Trump’s first wife Ivana, who died in 2022. Her two brothers, also born to Ivana, are Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who manage the Trump Organization. Before her father first went to the White House, Ivanka Trump also served as executive vice president of the Trump Organization.

When her father announced his re-election in 2022, she posted on Instagram that she loves him but is prioritizing her three young children this time. At a time when the 45th president was somewhat politically marginalized, Ivanka Trump was called to testify before a House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and the New York civil fraud scandal.

“Politics is a pretty dark world,” she said on “The Lex Fridman Podcast” in July 2022, according to CNN. “Politics is a pretty dark world. There’s a lot of darkness, there’s a lot of negativity, and it’s totally at odds with what’s comfortable for me as a human being.” “And, you know, this is really hard work. So I think it’s right for me and my family not to participate.”

Ivanka Trump may be out of the spotlight during President Donald Trump’s second term, but she’s not completely out of the picture in her father’s return to power. In fact, she attended a UFC fight in Newark with her father in June in Newark and in Miami this summer, and a photo shows her with the president chatting with UFC CEO Dana White at a jersey game.

She’s also reportedly helping host a UFC fight at the White House to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Ivanka Trump visits the Western Wall with Steve Witkoff

Ivanka Trump traveled with Donald Trump on his first foreign trip as president in 2017, stopping at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. He became the first sitting president to pray against a wall.

Ivanka Trump posted on social media in 2017 that she was “grateful to have experienced such a meaningful visit to the most sacred site of my faith and to have left a personal prayer note.” CNN reported that it was a rare moment for the eldest daughter, who has usually been cautious about her faith, to express her religion in public.

On October 10, she posted a similar photo of herself facing a wall on her Instagram account. Kushner and US envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff also visited the Western Wall before the Israeli hostages were freed.

“We are very happy. With the president’s arrival, there will be peace and many lives will be saved,” Witkoff said.

According to Reuters, the three also addressed a crowd at Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square on October 11.

“And the president wanted me to say, as he has said to so many of you personally, that I see you, I hear you, and I will always be on your side,” Ivanka Trump said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it has added health warnings to more powdered cinnamon products due to elevated lead levels.

On Friday, Oct. 10, the FDA issued an additional health warning warning that HAETAE and Roshni brands of ground cinnamon contain high levels of lead. On October 8, the government added Dura & Wise Ground Cinnamon.

“Exposure to these products may be unsafe,” the agency said in a release.

Since the summer of 2024, the agency has sent out alerts warning of elevated lead levels in a total of 16 cinnamon flour products.

It added Jiva Organic Ground Cinnamon to the list in September, before the FDA issued its warning in October.

The FDA is also analyzing additional cinnamon samples for the presence of high levels of lead.

What has been added to the list?

  • HAETAE ground cinnamon– The recall is not posted on the FDA website.
  • Roshni Ground Cinnamon– The recall is not posted on the FDA website.
  • Grand Shinmomon– Eureka Inc. of the United States has announced a product recall.
  • wise wife– SLR Food Distribution, Inc. has announced a product recall. (Note: This brand announced a voluntary recall in September 2025, but the FDA added a health warning in October 2025.)

“FDA has advised companies to voluntarily recall these products, with the exception of HAETAE brand cinnamon,” the FDA warning states. “FDA was unable to contact Haitai Inc. in the U.S. to share our findings and recommend that the company initiate a recall.”

Other cinnamon products listed in public health warnings

In addition to HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife brand ground cinnamon, the FDA has recommended voluntary recalls of 12 other ground cinnamon products starting in summer 2024 due to elevated lead levels. In 2025, 5 products were added to the health warning list. A complete list of products with health warnings includes:

  • La Frontera – There are no recalls posted on the FDA website for this product.
  • Asli- Asli Fine Foods has announced a product recall.

  • ALB Flavor- ALB-USA Enterprises has announced a product recall.
  • Shahzada-Advance Food International Inc. has announced a product recall.
  • Spice Class – American Spices LLC. has announced a product recall.

What if I own one of the brands included in the health warning?

The FDA recommends that anyone who owns powdered cinnamon products throw it away. Consumers are also advised to avoid purchasing powdered cinnamon products.

Why are elevated lead levels dangerous?

According to the FDA, “short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not cause symptoms.” The federal agency added that elevated blood lead levels may be the only telltale sign of lead exposure. However, “acute exposure to high levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead is more likely to cause additional signs and symptoms.”

According to the FDA, lead can affect nearly every body system, but the effects vary depending on the amount and duration of exposure and the age and weight of the individual. In children, exposure to large amounts of lead over weeks or months can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, leading to learning disabilities and other long-term health problems, federal officials added.

In adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with impaired kidney function, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects, the FDA said.

What are the symptoms of lead poisoning?

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of lead poisoning are different for children and adults.

Symptoms of lead poisoning in children

  • developmental delay
  • learning difficulties
  • irritation
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • Feeling sluggish and tired
  • abdominal pain

Taylor Swift tour documentary comes to Disney+

0

Confirming a widely held fan theory, Taylor Swift has finally announced that she will be releasing a six-part Ellas Tour documentary series.

The singer-songwriter (unsurprisingly) shared the news on “Good Morning America” on Oct. 13.

“This was the end of an era, and we knew it. We wanted to remember every moment leading up to the most important and intense chapter of our lives, so we allowed the filmmakers to capture this tour and all the stories woven into its conclusion. And we allowed them to film the entire final show,” Swift said in a post for X.

The singer-songwriter revealed that the long-awaited behind-the-scenes footage will be released alongside the first two episodes on Disney+ and Hulu on December 12th. The docuseries, titled Taylor Swift | The Elus Tour | The End of an Era, will be released alongside the film Taylor Swift | The Elus Tour | The Final Show, which features the Tortured Poets section of her blockbuster concert.

After that, two episodes will be distributed every week.

The series spotlights the cast, including Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter, Ed Sheeran, and Florence Welch (see the cast here), their families, and friends.

The announcement comes shortly after GMA, which along with the streaming service is owned by Disney, released a trailer teasing the documentary series on October 12th. The final slide displayed the logos of the two streamers, leaving little doubt as to where the footage would be distributed.

This is the singer’s third project with Disney, following 2020’s Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions and 2023’s concert film Ellas Tour.

Swift revealed for the first time on ABC’s morning show that she will be embarking on a career-spanning tour.

“I’ve wanted to tell you that I’ve been so excited for a really long time, and I’ve been planning this for years, but I can finally tell you that I’m going back on the road. This tour is called the Elas Tour, and it’s a journey through all the musical eras of my career,” she said in November 2022.

“I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.”

In fact, it turns out that the “Exile” singer was setting the stage for her role in the movie long before “The Life of a Showgirl” was released. Cameras began rolling in August 2024 in London, where she premiered the music video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” The three-minute reel gave fans a peek behind the velvet curtain, from Swift jumping into a trap door on stage to hiding in her now-iconic cleaning cart before each show.

But this video only scratched the surface. Fans witnessed film staff following her to and from the stage. The same work could have been produced when she returned to North America in the fall of 2024, capturing the following scenes. Travis Kelce shares a quick hug with his publicist in Indianapolis, a photographer from the “Folklore” cottage crouches in a secluded spot in Indianapolis, and a lucky Miami fan chosen for a “22” hat moment.

Swift’s mother, Andrea, also captured close-ups of Swift, stacks of bracelets, and more while spreading the word of friendship at Hard Rock Stadium.

In Swift’s “For a Fortnight Challenge” video posted on YouTube, she hinted at a possible documentary that includes rare rehearsal footage and previously unreleased “Tortured Poets” set footage.

By the time the tour reached Vancouver, the final stop on the Elas tour, the stage was lit up with two high-altitude cameras, a jib arm, a camera truck rotating along the stage, and microphones pointed at the audience. A sign warning against the use of drones was also posted on the door of BC Place Stadium.

“This is very serious,” concertgoer Addie Miller pointed out in X.

taylor swift movies and documentaries

Swift has produced and directed many of her own visuals, from All Too Well: The Short Film to Netflix’s Reputation Stadium Tour. Here’s a look back at some of her concert films and documentaries.

2023: “The Eras Tour” at AMC Theaters, Disney+

The first year of the three-hour show is available to stream on Disney+.

The film was shot during three concerts in Los Angeles in 2023 and provides the first version of the concerts before Swift disrupted the era by adding the “Tortured Poet” set. The film grossed over $250 million worldwide and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Swift struck a deal with the union during the SAG-AFTRA strike to bypass traditional studios and partner with AMC Theaters Distribution for theatrical release.

2020: “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions” on Disney+

In 2020, Taylor Swift released two surprise sister albums and then invited fans into her creative world with Disney+’s Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. The 106-minute documentary, directed and produced by Swift, was shot at Aaron Dessner’s secluded Long Pond Studios in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Sitting next to Dessner and Jack Antonoff, she told the stories behind each song on her Grammy-winning eighth album, Folklore.

“I started writing a new album out of the blue,” Swift said. “I was just writing songs during quarantine, and the album came together pretty quickly.”

2020: “City of Lover” Concert

In September 2019, Swift brought her seventh studio album, Lover, to life with an intimate, hour-long concert in front of 2,000 fans in Paris.

She was scheduled to begin her seventh tour with Lover Fest, a four-date extravaganza scheduled for Boston and Los Angeles. But that dream was shelved when the coronavirus pandemic shut down live music. Instead, Swift released a 42-minute TV special in May 2020 featuring eight stripped-down acoustic songs.

2020: “Miss Americana” on Netflix

Miss Americana, titled after track 7 of Lover, premiered on Netflix on January 31, 2020. The documentary brings to a close one of Taylor Swift’s most vulnerable chapters, as she grapples with fame, body image issues and the pressure to please everyone, embraces her voice in LGBTQ+ advocacy, and confronts online toxicity.

“No one had physically seen me for a year,” Swift admitted. “And I thought that’s what they wanted. I had to dismantle my entire belief system. I had to throw it away and reject it.”

2018: “Reputation Stadium Tour” on Netflix

Taylor Swift’s concert film ‘Reputation Stadium Tour’, filmed in Arlington, Texas, captures the singer at her most intense. She brought her sixth album to life with a 30-foot inflatable cobra named Karin.

Swift took moments for introspection between songs, including, “I think the things that scare us the most in life are the things we think threaten our prospects of finding the real thing. Having a bad reputation in our hearts can get in the way of finding real friendships, real love, real acceptance, finding someone who’s truly right for you.”

It appears that this concert film is no longer available on Netflix.

2015: “1989 World Tour Live”

The footage, which shows Swift in her fifth era, 1989, was filmed in Sydney, Australia in November 2015. The concert film was released on Apple Music less than a month later, on December 20th. Running for just over two hours, the film included rehearsal footage, interviews, and backstage clips.

2011: “Speak Now World Tour Live”

A third era of fantasy filled with enchanting encounters and surprises, Swift’s label Big Machine Records released a film in November 2011 that included footage shot at multiple shows. The label also released an album featuring a live performance of the singer sporting the famous “13” written in Sharpie on the back of her hand.

2010: “Journey to Fearless”

“Journey to Fearless” follows Swift’s second tour. The three 135-minute episodes followed a young girl fearlessly chasing her big dreams. The film included 13 live numbers, home movies, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage.

“That arena sold out in two minutes,” the young Swift said, before exclaiming, “What?!”

Watch New Zealand Parliament suspended due to unexpected haka

Proceedings in New Zealand’s parliament were abruptly interrupted by a haka performance.

Te Pati Māori’s Orini Kaipara gave his first speech on Thursday after being elected to fill the vacant seat. MPs and supporters commemorated the moment with a planned Maori song, but the celebrations escalated when members of the general public broke into an unsanctioned haka, a traditional Maori dance.

House Speaker Jerry Brownlee ordered them to stop.

“No, that’s not true. I have a guarantee that nothing like that will happen,” he said, interrupting the discussion.

Performances such as haka and singing in parliament require prior approval.

Watch the video above to see a haka break out in Congress.

The haka can be a signal of celebration or protest and can convey a variety of messages. In 2024, parliament was briefly suspended after Māori MPs performed a haka in opposition to the Treaty Principles Bill, which seeks to reinterpret the 184-year-old treaty between Britain and the indigenous Māori people.

Watch the video below to see the moment Hana Rafiti Maipi Clark broke the bill and started a haka protest.

President Trump and Xi resume talks as US softens attitude towards China

0

play

WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet again this month after Trump skipped the meeting and threatened to impose huge tariffs on China in retaliation for new export restrictions.

Bessent said on Oct. 13 that the Trump administration and China had “substantive communications” over the weekend after the president threatened last Friday to impose new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports effective Nov. 1.

“Mr. Xi is scheduled to meet with Party Chairman Xi in South Korea. I believe the talks will continue,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business. “The idea is to give them time to meet and work things out.”

In addition to last week’s tariff threat, President Trump also said he may withdraw from his scheduled talks with Mr. Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in South Korea on October 31 and November 1.

But Mr. Bessent said Mr. Trump now believes that new export restrictions on China’s rare earth minerals, which prompted Mr. Trump’s tariff threat, may have been the work of “lower-level officials” rather than Mr. Xi.

“This may not have come from Xi Jinping himself, because the Chinese system is very weak,” Bessent said. “This may be coming from the hardliners in China, who also have hardliners on their side who are constantly trying to undermine the relationship.”

President Trump suggested in an Oct. 12 post on Truth social that things would go well with China. “Don’t worry about China, everything will be fine! Respected President Xi just had his worst moment. He doesn’t want panic for his country, and neither do I. America wants to help China, not hurt China!!!” the president wrote.

Later, President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Israel: “I think we’re going to get along very well. We have a great relationship with China.”

The stock market, which had plunged in response to President Trump’s tariff threats, soared on October 13 as President Trump and his administration softened their stance on China.

Still, Bessent said it was “highly inappropriate” for China to announce expanded export controls on the same day President Trump announced the long-awaited Hamas-Israel peace deal to end the fighting in Gaza.

“Trying to gain influence before meeting Donald Trump was a bad idea, and (Trump) has turned the tables,” Bessent said. “It was a miscalculation, but we’re communicating now. I’m confident we can move forward.”

Bessent said Trump officials are scheduled to meet with Chinese officials this week, while Bessent said Trump will meet with Chinese officials before meeting with Xi. He said President Trump could choose not to move forward with tariffs.

“There is no need for 100% tariffs,” Bessent said. “Despite this announcement last week, relations are good. Communication lines have been reopened, so we’ll see how it goes.”
