Yankees’ Brian Cashman hits back at Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez rebuked their former boss in their zeal to create glamorous studio television.

Brian Cashman, the longtime general manager and executive vice president of the New York Yankees, appeared on a local radio station to push back against criticism of his system and manager Aaron Boone’s response.

After the Yankees were eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the American League Division Series, Jeter and A-Rod shot from their perches on Fox Sports’ postgame show.

Rodriguez called the Yankees “one of the worst compositions I’ve ever seen” after the Yankees won 94 games, defeated Boston in the American League Wild Card Series, and lost to the Blue Jays, who also won 94 games and won the division championship in a tiebreaker.

Jeter claimed he had no “inside information,” but repeated the well-worn claim that Boone was just parroting the front office’s strategy and that game-time operations were scripted by his superiors.

“I’m confident that it’s not Aaron that’s influencing their every move during the game,” Jeter said on the air.

Cashman appeared on WFAN, the Yankees’ flagship station, and fired back at two baseball legends who once patrolled the left side of the infield. He hinted that he called Jeter to discuss the criticism.

“Obviously they don’t know,” Cashman said. “I know DJ said that, but I don’t know what he meant. When he said it, he said he didn’t have inside knowledge, but for whatever reason, he certainly said it. And I think that’s a bug that people throw up there when they don’t have anything else to throw at it.”

Cashman bemoaned the concept of “analysis, analysis, analysis” and lamented that “none of it is accurate,” a perception that has existed ever since Boone took over as Yankees manager before the 2018 season, replacing Joe Girardi, who had just finished their 2017 ALCS trip.

Jeter retired as Yankees shortstop after the 2014 season and took ownership and president of the Miami Marlins, signing a five-year contract in 2022. Before his induction into the Hall of Fame that same year, he hinted that he was looking forward to having a more regular presence at Yankee Stadium, even if it didn’t involve an official role.

Rodriguez, who Cashman signed to a $275 million extension in 2008 when A-Rod refused to sign him early, was embroiled in performance-enhancing drug scandals in two of his final six seasons with the Yankees.

10 Affordable American Cars for Sale in 2026

  • Prices are based on Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price without options.
  • Although many of the cheapest cars are made by foreign manufacturers, there are still some affordable domestic cars.

Cheap new cars are almost extinct.

Car prices have been rising for the past few years and show no signs of going down. There are still some more affordable options, but even those vehicles are now more expensive. If you want a car for around $30,000 or less, you’ll have to dig pretty deep.

Most of the cheaper vehicles on sale today are made in Japan or Korea, but there are still affordable domestic options as well. As part of the USA TODAY Network, the Detroit Free Press reviewed the American automaker’s products in October and found 10 cars that aren’t all that expensive. Prices are based on starting MSRP without options and are subject to change over time.

Chevrolet Trax: $22,995

The Trax is a small, compact crossover that is GM’s least expensive new car offering. Estimated fuel economy reaches 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

Chevrolet Trailblazer: $24,995

The Chevrolet Trailblazer may not look like its previous versions from the early to mid-2000s, but at least it’s more affordable.

Buick Envista: $25,995

The Envista may be a cheap car, but it has a better interior than other competing small crossovers. It’s built on the same platform as the Trax and shares the same 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive.

Buick Encore GX: $27,895

The Envista’s big brother, the Encore GX, looks similar and has the same powertrain, but it’s larger and offers optional all-wheel drive.

Ford Maverick: $28,145

The Ford Maverick is the cheapest pickup truck on the market. It may be smaller than other trucks, but it can still tow up to 2,000 pounds and has a payload capacity of 1,500 pounds in base trim.

Chevrolet Volt: $28,995

The Chevrolet Volt is back. Although it is officially listed as a 2027 model, it will be released in the first quarter of 2026.

Dodge Hornet: $29,995

The Dodge Hornet is a small, sporty crossover from an automaker known for its loud, aggressive muscle cars. It may not have the excitement of other Dodge cars, but it’s the most affordable model in the lineup. The Hornet is built on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Tonale, so production has been delayed due to tariffs. It is unclear whether there will be a 2026 model.

Jeep Compass: $30,165

Jeep’s least expensive product is the Compass. It has been redesigned for the 2026 model year, and prices will increase from about $26,000 to nearly $30,000. This is one of the most affordable SUVs with off-road capabilities.

Chevrolet Equinox: $30,495

The gas-powered Equinox is cheaper than the EV. While some of the previously mentioned vehicles were small crossovers, the Equinox is larger and offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo.

GMC Terrain: $31,895

GMC is a company that only manufactures trucks and SUVs. The Terrain is the least expensive vehicle in the lineup, but it’s no slouch. The base Elevation trim comes loaded with great technology, including a 15-inch infotainment screen and over 16 standard safety features.

Ohio congressman says Republican was ‘targeted’ with swastika flag

0

A U.S. congressman from Ohio said a photo of an American flag altered with the image of a swastika in his Capitol office was a “ploy” used by someone to discredit him and other Republican leaders.

Congressman Dave Taylor is a conservative Republican representing Ohio’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Taylor, whose district includes Clermont and other southern Ohio counties, said in an emailed statement on Oct. 16 that several Republican lawmakers had been “targeted” with flags altered to include Nazi symbols.

“New details have emerged from a systematic investigation into the despicable symbol that appeared in my office,” Taylor’s statement read. “We have confirmed that a number of Republican offices were targeted by unknown groups and individuals who distributed American flags with similar symbols on them. Initially, they were indistinguishable from regular American flags to the naked eye. My office was one of the offices targeted in this ruse.”

A photo shared on social media by left-wing Ohio political blogger DJ Burns and Politico shows a flag hanging behind the desk of Angelo Elia, Taylor’s legislative correspondent. According to Barnes’ social media post, the photo was a screenshot taken during a video call with Elia.

Mr. Taylor did not say in his statement that Mr. Elia was still employed by his office.

“After a full internal investigation, we are confident that no employee in this office would intentionally display such a vile image, and the flag in question was immediately removed once the hidden symbol was discovered,” the statement said. “As I have said previously, I unequivocally condemn hate in any form and continue to work with the Capitol Police and the House Administration Committee to uncover further details in this investigation.”

Taylor’s office initially called the flag “vandalism”

Taylor’s office sent an emailed press statement on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in response to the “vandalism” and “despicable and highly inappropriate symbols” at his office. About 10 minutes later, a photo of the altered American flag was posted online.

Taylor said in a statement Thursday that the flag was initially “indistinguishable” from a regular American flag. The Enquirer asked Taylor’s publicist to send photos or videos of the flag showing how it looks different from what was seen in social media posts. The Enquirer also asked if other lawmakers had found the flag in their offices. A Taylor spokesperson did not immediately respond to these emails.

Who is Congressman Dave Taylor?

Taylor won a crowded Republican primary last year to replace former U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup to represent Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District. His first term began in January.

Taylor, who grew up in Amelia, Ohio, also owns his family’s concrete company, Sardinia Ready Mix.

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons pay tribute to Ace Frehley after death

0

To many stars, Ace Frehley was simply out of this world.

Music superstars and other celebrities are paying tribute to the rock musician best known for his role as the original lead guitarist of glam rock band KISS. Frehley, also known as “The Alien,” died on October 16 at the age of 74 after suffering a fall at his home.

In a statement shared with USA TODAY, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons called their former bandmates “rock soldiers.”

“We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an irreplaceable rock warrior who was essential to the most formative and foundational period of the band and its history,” the duo said. “He is and always will be a part of the KISS legacy.

“Our thoughts are with Janet, Monique and everyone who loved him, including his fans around the world.”

Here’s what other stars are saying about Frehley and his unforgettable musical legacy.

Bret Michaels thanks Ace Frehley for ‘years of great music’

Shortly after news of Frehley’s death became public, fellow rocker Bret Michaels paid tribute to his friend on social media. “Ace, my brother, I can’t thank you enough for all the years of great music, all the festivals we’ve been to together, and for playing lead guitar on ‘Nothing But a Good Time,'” Michaels captioned a photo of the two.

“With love and respect from my family and myself – may you rest in peace!!!”

Bruce Kulick, who played with KISS from 1984 to 1996, said Frehley’s death was “devastating to the rock world.”

“It had a deep impact on me too,” he wrote on Instagram. “He was a one-of-a-kind, truly iconic guitarist. His undeniable role in the founding and success of KISS cannot be forgotten. Not only was he loved by all, but he influenced millions of guitarists around the world. Rest in Peace.”

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready calls Ace Frehley ‘my hero’

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready shared a photo of himself with Frehley and Eddie Vedder and a touching message to his friend, whom he considers “my hero,” in a post that was also shared on the band’s social media accounts.

“I heard about Ace Frehley’s death from Rick Friel, who played with me in the band Shadow. Rick was also the first person to tell me about Ace on the bus with a KISS lunch box in 1977…it literally changed my life,” McCready wrote. “I picked up a guitar to join Rick’s band, Warrior, which became Shadow in 1978. We covered ‘C’mon and Love Me.’ ”

“All my friends have spent countless hours talking about KISS and buying KISS stuff. Ace is my hero and I consider him a friend. I studied his solos endlessly for years,” he continued. “Listen to ‘Alive.’ We used the ‘She’ solo as a template. Ace jammed ‘Black Diamond’ with Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden…It was a dream come true for me.”

McCready concluded his eulogy by saying, “If it wasn’t for Ace and Kiss’ influence, I would never have picked up a guitar. Rest in peace, Ace, you changed my life. Thank you.”

Kennedy Center, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors “one of the most famous and influential guitarists”

The Kennedy Center honored Frehley, who was scheduled to be honored along with Stanley, Simmons and Peter Criss at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors later this year.

The Washington, D.C.-based cultural center said in a social media post that it “expresses its deepest condolences to his friends, family, and millions of fans around the world.” “We will honor this ‘Soldier of the Rock’, his legacy and his accomplishments at a ceremony in December.”

Meanwhile, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shared a memorial that included a clip of Frehley’s speech at the 2014 induction ceremony.

The caption read, “A vital part of the band that inspired generations of hard rockers to pick up their instruments, ‘Space Ace’ will be remembered as one of the most famous and influential guitarists of all time.”

MNRK Music Group said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY: “We are honored to work with Ace and have been home to his label since 2014.”

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the loyal fan community who stood by his side throughout every era of his career,” said MNRK President and CEO Shawn Stephenson. “His creativity, humor and passion for music will forever be a part of MNRK’s story.”

Amazon sued by customers over ‘fake’ Prime Day sales

Amazon is facing a new lawsuit for allegedly misleading customers with fake deals during its popular Prime Day sale.

The proposed class action lawsuit, filed on September 22 in federal court in Washington state on behalf of two Amazon customers, alleges that Amazon Prime Day is “rife with false sales and misleading ‘percent off’ claims.”

The lawsuit accuses Amazon of using false list prices to calculate Prime Day discounts, misleading consumers into believing they were getting a better deal than they actually were. The complaint alleges that the “pre-discount” prices that Amazon displays next to sale items are inflated and do not reflect the actual amount the products were sold for in the lead-up to Prime Day, which is supposed to offer exclusive discounts.

Amazon has a disclaimer that says it displays list prices based on whether a customer has purchased an item at or above that price in the past 90 days, but the lawsuit alleges that the higher “pre-sale” prices do not comply with this 90-day rule. In some cases, Amazon may increase listing prices for a “very short” period, sometimes just one day, to make subsequent Prime Day discounts appear legitimate, the complaint says. In some cases, products were not sold at higher prices for 90 days or more.

“Amazon uses fake Prime Day percentage discounts offered under the extreme time pressure of the short Prime Day period to lure consumers into purchasing its products, and the tactic works,” the lawsuit states.

USA TODAY contacted Amazon on Thursday, October 16th, but did not receive a response.

In at least one case, customers actually paid more for ‘sale’ items, lawsuit says

The lawsuit points to several examples of this alleged deception, including the previous Prime Day event, which ran from July 8th to 11th.

In one example, a children’s tablet was advertised as having a 40% discount for Prime Day only, reducing the price from $119.99 to $72.18. However, the tablet was not listed at that price in the 90 days prior to its release. In fact, the lawsuit alleges, it sold for between $50 and $85 in the past 90 days, with a median price of about $72, meaning customers actually paid more than $20 more than the lowest “off-sale” price.

In another article, air fryers were listed for 40% off for Prime Day, dropping the price from $59.99 to $35.99. According to the complaint, Amazon not only failed to sell the air fryer at a higher price in the 90 days prior to the sale, but also failed to display that price a year in advance of the sale date.

In several cases outlined in the lawsuit, deals that were supposed to be exclusive to Prime Day were either deeper discounts than advertised or no discounts at all.

If the two customers involved in the lawsuit had known the product’s regular price and that the deal was not as advertised, they would not have purchased the product during the previous sale, the complaint alleges.

The lawsuit comes after a Substack newsletter called Popular Information published an article in July accusing Amazon of defrauding customers on Prime Day.

Amazon pays $2.5 million in separate lawsuit

Amazon has recently faced increased scrutiny over its advertising practices. In September, the retail giant agreed to pay a $2.5 billion settlement that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) called “historic” after being accused of manipulating customers into signing up and maintaining Prime memberships.

As part of the settlement, Amazon will pay $1 billion in civil penalties and $1.5 billion in consumer relief to approximately 35 million affected customers. Some eligible customers will automatically receive up to $51 in relief, while others will need to file a claim, according to court documents.

Virginia attorney general debate focuses on Jay Jones documents and apology

0

The email scandal prompted calls for Mr. Jones to withdraw from the race, but Mr. Jones criticized Mr. Miyares for being too close to Mr. Trump.

Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for Virginia attorney general, has been embroiled in a text scandal and apologized to “all Virginians” on October 16th.

“Let me be clear: I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed. And I’m sorry,” Jones said of the text during a debate at the University of Richmond.

The race between Jones and Republican Attorney Jason Miyares is important because the winner, Virginia, is considered the frontrunner for the governor’s race in four years. The state’s off-year elections are often a precursor to the following year’s midterm congressional elections.

Jones criticized Miyares, calling him “too weak” and “too scary” to stand up to President Donald Trump. Jones said Miyares would not challenge Trump on firing federal employees, imposing import tariffs or deploying the National Guard.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher,” Jones said.

President Trump called on Jones to withdraw from the race, citing his “sick and demented jokes.”

Mr. Miyares punished Mr. Jones, who never filed charges. Miyares said he has support from major law enforcement agencies and has worked over the past four years to hire more policy personnel and reduce violent crime.

“Jay Jones is not a prosecutor, he’s a politician,” Miyares said. “He wants a fight in Washington.”

What did Jones’ text say?

Jones, a former state lawmaker from the Norfolk area, emailed Republican lawmakers in 2022 that the then-state House speaker deserved “two bullets in the head” and that he was going to “urinate” on the graves of other Republicans. He apologized for the text in a statement.

Critics highlighted how the violent language emerged in the aftermath of the Sept. 10 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and other recent political attacks.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said Democrats across Virginia condemned the remarks.

Jeffries told reporters at the Capitol on Oct. 16 that the attorney general nominee had properly apologized for his comments. “I know that Democrats across the board in Virginia condemn his comments, and that’s the right thing to do,” he said.

On October 3, the conservative magazine National Review revealed that Jones mistakenly sent a text to Republican Virginia Representative Carrie Coyner complaining about then-Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert’s deference to moderate Democrats.

“Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler, Pol Pot. Gilbert received two bullets in the head,” Jones said in a text message.

The message mentions the former speaker of the state House of Representatives, the leader of Nazi Germany, and the leader of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge. The text repackaged a joke among Brooklynites about Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley.

Jones specifically apologized to Gilbert, his wife and family. But Miyares said real accountability would mean withdrawing from the race.

Dodgers vs. Brewers live scores, channels, and where to watch NLCS Game 3

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers have no idea what happened to Shohei Ohtani’s bat.

They don’t know who will be the closer tomorrow.

Freddie Freeman has been relatively restrained.

However, the Dodgers are one game away from returning to the World Series.

They beat the Milwaukee Brewers again, 3-1, and can complete a four-game sweep on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

Simply put, this National League Championship Sayres was a complete mismatch.

Tyler Glasnow was the most recent Dodger starting pitcher to shut out the Brewers, allowing three hits and one run through 5 2/3 innings, and four relief pitchers allowed just one hit the rest of the game.

The Brewers now scored a total of three points.

He had only 9 hits.

They played 27 innings and were behind in 26 of them.

It’s true that the Brewers will be without their top hitters in the postseason.

No. 4 hitter Christian Yelich hit a scoring double in Game 1 of the 2018 NLCS against the Dodgers, but hasn’t hit an RBI in 25 postseason games since. He’s 2-for-12 since Thursday’s Game 2 game between the National League and the Chicago Cubs, with strikeouts in his last three at-bats.

Second baseman Bryce Turan has two hits in 23 at-bats and 11 strikeouts since Game 1 of the National League.

The only bright spot for the Brewers was once again their pitchers, especially rookie Jacob Misiorowski. He came on after Aaron Ashby gave up one run, was able to retire one batter in the first inning, and almost single-handedly kept the Brewers in the game.

He completely shut down the Dodgers’ offense over five innings, facing 15 batters, retiring 14 of them, and striking out eight.

The Miz was so dominant that only one player, Mookie Betts, had an infield hit until the sixth inning. And the only batter to get on base against Misiorowski was Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages, who hit an infield hit with two outs.

But the sixth inning came with fatigue. He allowed a one-out single to Will Smith. A full-count fastball walked Freddie Freeman, but Tommy Edman hit a tying single to center field to break the tie.

That was the end of Misiorowski’s afternoon play, and the Dodgers extended their lead to 3-1 on a throw error by Brewers relief pitcher Abner Uribe.

As if the Brewers weren’t already having enough trouble offensively, the team’s best player, Jackson Chourio, left midway through his at-bat with a right foot injury in the seventh inning, forcing him to drag himself up the dugout stairs to the clubhouse.

Ohtani, who had been absent since the Wild Card Series with a 2-for-25 slump, joined the Dodgers with at least one leadoff triple, making him the first Dodger to do a postseason leadoff triple since Davey Lopez in the 1977 World Series.

It was Ohtani’s first extra-base hit of the postseason, ending a seven-game slump that left him optimistic he would quickly return to being the most dangerous hitter in the game.

The Dodgers and Ohtani took the extreme step of getting out of his slump Wednesday by having him take extra batting practice on the field instead of his daily routine inside the cage. This is his first time taking batting practice on the field since joining the Dodgers. They even played Michael Bublé’s walk-up song “Feeling Good” over the speakers at Dodger Stadium.

“In other words, if I hit, we can win,” Ohtani said. “I think they think they can win if they hit. I want to do my best to aim for that.”

Ohtani denied that pitching in the postseason was a contributing factor to his struggles, but on the day he pitched in 2025, he hit just .222 with four home runs and 21 strikeouts, and the next day he hit .147 with two home runs and 10 strikeouts.

His slump began when he pitched six innings in Game 1 of the National League against the Philadelphia Phillies, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

“I don’t know if there’s a direct correlation,” he says. “Physically, it doesn’t feel like there’s a connection.”

Still, the numbers are loud and clear.

“There’s definitely some frustration,” Roberts said. “Obviously he’s a very talented player and we have high expectations for him. He’s just a great competitor. He’s very prepared. And there’s still a lot left in baseball.”

The World Series begins in a week.

The Dodgers should be waiting there.

Follow Nightengale on X: @Bnightengale

Here’s how Game 3 played out.

Jackson Cholio appeared to injure his leg when he whiffed in the top of the seventh inning against Blake Treinen and was removed from the game.

Jacob Misiorowski was on a roll, allowing a single to Will Smith and then a walk to Freddie Freeman, putting Tommy Edman at bat with two outs and first base. Edman, last year’s NLCS MVP, singled to center field, bringing home Smith and giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

Abner Uribe, who replaced Misiorowski, made a throwing error while trying to keep Edman in check with two outs, allowing Freeman to score the decisive point.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts retired starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow with two outs in the sixth inning after right-hander Andrew Vaughn gave up a walk. Letty Alex Beshear came on and struck out Sal Frelick to end the top of the 6th inning.

Glasnow finished the day with eight strikeouts, three walks, and allowed three hits and one run.

Game 3 of the NLCS remains tied into the 6th inning. Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski has pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings since taking the mound in the bottom of the first inning.

The right-handed pitcher has now given up 10 consecutive Dodgers and has eight strikeouts in relief so far.

Jacob Misiorowski replaced opening pitcher Andy Ashby and had five strikeouts in 2/3 innings, leaving the team tied 1-1 heading into the fourth inning.

Caleb Durbin hit a one-out triple off Tyler Glasnow in the top of the second inning, and the Dodgers infield pulled in and scored on Jake Bowers’ RBI home run, tying the game at 1-1.

Bowers is currently 4-for-9 with three RBIs in the 2025 postseason.

Bowers advanced on a steal of second and reached third base on an error by Glasnow, who was attempting to double, but third baseman Max Muncy made a great play to cut off Joey Ortiz’s grounder at the plate.

Shohei Ohtani took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a triple to the right field corner off starter Aaron Ashby, and on his next pitch, Mookie Betts hit an RBI double to center field, giving Ohtani the lead.

Ashby, making his seventh appearance in eight postseason games for the Brewers, was replaced by Jacob Misiorowski with one out, and the rookie struck out Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez and put out two runners.

Game 3 was being played at Dodger Stadium, and Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow was able to get around a two-out walk to William Contreras and an infield hit by Christian Yelich to keep the first inning to zero runs.

Glasnow was making his third postseason appearance after pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Phillies.

Since the start of the National League vs. Phillies game, Shohei Ohtani has had just 2 hits in 25 at-bats (.080 average), and he unusually mixed up his routine, taking batting practice on the field at Dodger Stadium the day before Game 3.

“The postseason is like a street fight, it’s not like a boxing match, so there’s an urgency to it,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And I think if this was a regular-season situation and you were looking at a small sample over a wide range of eight or nine games or whatever it was, I think he probably wouldn’t have been on the field.

“With the urgency of the postseason, he needed to make an adjustment and wanted to make an adjustment himself. And that adjustment started to show on the field. So I think that’s great in his understanding and appreciation of playing with urgency.”

Just 24 hours after Blake Snell became the first pitcher since Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956 to face the fewest batters through eight innings in a postseason game, Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed a home run on the first pitch of the game, but over the next 110 pitches he allowed just two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. He was so dominant that he allowed just two fly balls and 15 ground balls the entire game.

“It was unbelievable,” Dodgers catcher Will Smith said after Game 2. “This is probably the best two-game pitching streak I’ve ever seen.” — Bob Nightengale

DoorDash and Waymo delivery collaboration begins in Phoenix

0

play

Your next DoorDash order could be delivered by a robot.

At least, that’s the mission behind Waymo and DoorDash’s new partnership.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the companies announced plans to begin a test phase of their automated delivery service in the Phoenix metropolitan area and expand more broadly later this year.

The companies also introduced a limited-time $10 Waymo promotion for DashPass members in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. For the remainder of 2025, DashPass members in these cities will receive $10 off their Waymo rides once a month, according to a news release from the companies. Members will receive a new promo code at the beginning of each month until December 31st.

Where and how to use the DoorDash and Waymo partnership

The companies are currently testing a new automated delivery service in the Phoenix area. The test is limited to one city, according to the release, but the companies plan to roll it out more broadly later this year, though it’s unclear which cities will take advantage of the distribution feature next.

DoorDash customers in eligible areas who want to try Waymo service can do so using the app’s “Autonomous Delivery Platform.” Customers are then matched with Waymo to use the platform to receive deliveries from participating merchants.

The companies say the system will help coordinate different types of delivery methods at scale, including Waymo, drones, robots and Dashers, which DoorDash calls couriers.

As testing continues, Waymo service will begin with deliveries from DashMart, DoorDash stores that sell groceries and other goods, and will expand over time.

Nicole Gavel, Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Waymo, said: “Through our partnership with DoorDash, we’re leveraging our proven delivery experience to offer our customers a seamless, contactless way to get the items they need, whether it’s groceries or snacks.”

DashPass offers exclusive deals, member-only perks, $0 shipping fees, and reduced service fees, the release continued.

Google, which owns Waymo, was down 0.18% Thursday afternoon. DoorDash traded 2.70% lower.

Stephen A. Smith says Americans were ‘excited’ by government shutdown

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith walked off the stage at City Hall after criticizing politicians for not resolving the government shutdown.

Smith, host of ESPN’s First Take, attended an event hosted by cable network NewsNation in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, Oct. 16, along with other guests, including hosts Chris Cuomo and Bill O’Reilly.

The government shutdown that began Oct. 1 is now in its third week, and it has become the biggest issue at City Hall. Republicans “passed a bill that funds the government at the level that Democrats wanted,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told the committee and the audience, according to NewsNation.

Rep. Madeline Dean (D-Pennsylvania) responded that Republicans have a “triple chance” of holding the White House and controlling both houses of Congress. “You are failing to govern,” she said.

A member of the audience brought up a personal aspect of the issue. Jack Criss Jr., who said he had been an air traffic controller for 16 years, told the gathering he was very concerned about the situation because he worked to pay for his daughter’s college tuition and then took a side job as a DoorDash delivery driver.

This infuriated Smith, who said Chris’ story exemplifies why Americans are angry about the shutdown. “This is why you have so many Americans. Sorry for my language, but please stop the (expletive) in Washington,” he said. Politicians need to work “to make things better,” Smith added.

Smith criticizes government for increasing US debt

He also criticized Washington for allowing the U.S. debt to balloon to more than $37.8 trillion. “We all look at our checks and it goes to the government, so somehow we should be doing enough constructive and productive things that we don’t have that kind of deficit,” Smith said in a video posted by NewsNation on X. “That’s not happening.”

Smith said he was open to a possible presidential run and blamed the shutdown for not getting paid as an air traffic controller and how Chris had to take another job.

“Everyone here is getting paid,” he said, pointing to a panel that included several lawmakers.

“He’s the only one who hasn’t received a check,” Smith said. “You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to take a break.”

Diane Keaton’s death certificate reveals new details about her final days

play

New details have emerged about the death of Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton.

A copy of Keaton’s death certificate obtained by USA TODAY on Oct. 16 indicated that the “immediate cause” of her death was primary bacterial pneumonia. Several days passed between her onset of illness and her death at a Santa Monica hospital. No other significant factors were cited in Keaton’s death.

The “First Wives Club” actress was cremated on October 14th.

This information was first reported by People magazine.

Further details about Keaton’s death were released a day after People magazine reported, citing a statement from her family, that she died of pneumonia. Keaton died on the morning of October 11th at the age of 79.

“The Keaton family is extremely grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support we have received over the past few days on behalf of our beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11th,” a statement read in People magazine.

“She loved animals and was a staunch supporter of the non-fed community, so making a donation to your local food bank or animal shelter in her memory would be a wonderful and much-appreciated tribute to her.”

Adults 65 and older are at higher risk of developing pneumonia, which infects the lungs, because they have other chronic health conditions and because their immune systems generally weaken with age.

Diane Keaton dies after being hospitalized

People, the New York Times, and CBS News reported on October 11 that Keaton had died, citing people close to him, including producer Dolly Russ.

The detailed circumstances were not made public at the time. However, the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed to People and CNN that paramedics were dispatched to Keaton’s home and transported a woman to the hospital.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in January 1946, Keaton landed her breakthrough role as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather at the age of 26.

She continued to win fans around the world for her comedic performances in “The First Wives Club,” “Father of the Bride,” and “The Family Stone.” She won her first and only Oscar statuette for 1977’s “Annie Hall,” one of her many collaborations with former partner Woody Allen.

Keaton also flexed his dramatic skills on the big screen, including in 1977’s “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” and 1982’s “Reds,” for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. She was nominated two more times, for “Marvin’s Room” (1997) and “Something’s Gotta Give” (2004).

Polestar’s electric SUV is a strong competitor in this segment.

play

  • Polestar’s electric SUVs offer a unique and sophisticated driving experience.
  • It’s minimalistic, safe, and packed with great technology.

USA TODAY Cars got behind the wheel of a Polestar 3 electric SUV for a 254-mile road trip to AutoCamp Catskills, an Airstream trailer camp.

Polestar is the electric car brand of Swedish luxury car manufacturer Volvo. So far, the brand has produced several electric vehicle nameplates to compete with powerhouses like Tesla in the luxury electric vehicle space.

The brand takes a minimalist approach to the design language of its EVs, creating a clean, uncluttered cabin with most technology features accessible through the infotainment screen. Polestar 3 combines exciting performance specifications with a luxurious interior to create a driving experience that can best be described as immersive.

What makes the 2025 Polestar 3 stand out?

The Polestar 3 features very fine character lines and a unique bonnet. It is an SUV with the stance of a sporty sedan. Our test vehicle featured Polestar’s Midnight body color, one of six exterior color options. Apart from the futuristic headlights, the Polestar 3 doesn’t have any extremely distinctive exterior features at first glance. The body remains classy, aiming for an understated, technology-focused look rather than something bold or flashy.

What makes Polestar 3 different from other EVs in its segment?

  • There are very few physical buttons, and most controls are accessed via the infotainment system.
  • Simple cabin design, not overcrowded, the accessory compartment and armrest also do not take up space
  • Sporty acceleration feeling for an SUV
  • Great parking and camera features
  • Responsive handling and excellent driving dynamics (great cornering for an SUV)

In an era where automotive brands are fighting to bring the biggest, boldest new ideas to the forefront of the industry, Polestar 3 takes a step back and lets its driving experience speak for itself.

Performance, usability and efficiency

The Polestar 3 is very driver-focused. It’s enough to dazzle even the staunchest EV opponents. Polestar’s single-motor SUV boasts a powerful 299 horsepower. Dual-motor models produce 489 ponies, while models equipped with the Performance Pack produce 517 ponies. Range varies by trim.

polestar 3 driving range

  • 350 miles for standard rear-wheel drive models
  • 315 miles for all-wheel drive models
  • 449 miles for performance models

USA TODAY Cars tested the performance model’s real-world mileage on a road trip totaling nearly six hours of driving time. Polestar 3’s range estimation is accurate and driving at low speeds without air conditioning helps conserve battery power. Additionally, the Polestar 3 was quickly charged at a ChargePoint fast charging station in Red Hook, New York.

The fast-charging station charged the electric SUV’s battery from about 30% to more than 80% in less than an hour. Charging time varies depending on the wattage of the charger you are using. That said, charging the Polestar 3 was a relatively quick and easy experience for a driver who hasn’t done many quick charging sessions.

INTERIOR, TECHNOLOGY AND COMFORT

The interior of this EV is spacious and sophisticated. A huge 14.5-inch vertical infotainment system is the focal point of the cabin. Drivers and passengers can use the touchscreen to perform various vehicle functions, such as opening the trunk and turning driver assistance and safety features on and off.

Orange seat bullets add character to the interior, and premium seat materials ensure comfort on long drives. The performance model we tested featured an augmented reality heads-up display that shows driving speed, speed limits, and traffic signs. Overall, this SUV has a lot of great standard tech features that are easily accessible through the infotainment system.

Load capacity, space, practicality

The 2025 Polestar 3 has 21.1 cubic feet of space behind the back row seats. Folding the rear seats provides 49.8 cubic feet of space. This EV isn’t spacious by SUV standards, but it has plenty of cargo space for hauling groceries and general activities.

The back row seats are spacious for passengers. Additionally, the cloth seats are comfortable and luxurious. Between the plush interior and giant moonroof, the Polestar 3’s cabin is a work of art. If you have a small family, the Polestar 3 is the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

price, value, competitors

The 2025 Polestar 3 is currently available in three different trims.

2025 Polestar 3 Trim

  • Long range single motor: $57,500
  • Long range dual motor: $63,400
  • Long range dual motor: $69,400

Its main rivals include the 2026 BMW iX and 2025 Genesis GV60. Edmunds ranks the 2026 BMW iX as the best electric SUV of 2025. Polestar’s electric SUV is more affordable than many rivals, but the iX has superior interior quality and a longer range.

MotorTrend praises the Polestar 3’s “striking looks, agile feel, and spacious cabin.” After all, electric SUVs have a lot to offer, but some rivals outperform them in key areas like performance and cabin quality.

Who is John Bolton? What you need to know about the former Trump advisor

play

John Bolton, a former national security adviser during President Donald Trump’s first term and a vocal critic of the president, was indicted on Thursday, October 16, on charges of improperly retaining national defense information.

In court filings, federal prosecutors alleged that documents obtained during a search of Mr. Bolton’s office in August included labels such as “confidential,” “confidential” and “confidential.”

After serving in the Trump administration, Bolton became a vocal critic of the administration’s foreign policy and said the president was unfit to hold office. Before the Oct. 16 indictment, President Trump had revoked Bolton’s classified details and security clearance.

Here’s what you need to know about John Bolton.

Who is John Bolton?

Yale graduate, Bolton, 76 years oldis a lawyer and diplomat who served in several Republican administrations. He promoted a neoconservative foreign policy stance.

Mr. Bolton served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush and as national security adviser to President Trump in his first administration. (It is traditional for former ambassadors to retain their titles even after leaving office.)

He has long advocated for an aggressive foreign policy for the United States and for the use of military force, including the right to strike first against potential threats. He was a strong supporter of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and has continued to defend his role in promoting the war in the years since.

bolton and trump

Bolton joined the Trump administration in March 2018 to replace outgoing national security adviser HR McMaster. However, Bolton resigned in September 2019, 17 months after taking the job.

In the years since Trump took office, Bolton has become a fierce critic of the president. In 2020, Bolton told USA TODAY that if Trump had been a senator, he “probably” would have convicted Trump at the real estate mogul’s first impeachment trial.

In that case, Trump was charged with abuse of power by withholding aid to Ukraine in order to pressure the government to investigate then-Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The Senate acquitted Trump on the charge largely along party lines.

Ace Frehley of KISS dies at age 74

0

play

Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist of KISS and the legendary “Spaceman”, has passed away.

Fraley passed away on October 16th after a recent fall at his home and reportedly on life support. He was 74 years old.

The rocker’s family said in a statement to USA TODAY that the musician passed away peacefully in Morristown, New Jersey, surrounded by his family.

“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his final moments, we were fortunate to be able to surround him with loving, caring and peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this world. We will cherish all of his fondest memories, his laughter, and honor the strength and kindness he gave to others. The magnitude of his death is epic and beyond comprehension. We reflect on his incredible life.” Because of Ace’s accomplishments, Ace’s memory will live on forever! ” read the statement.

On October 7, one week before his death, Frehley canceled his remaining 2025 tour dates, citing “ongoing medical issues.” The announcement came shortly after he was hospitalized after what was described as a “minor fall” in the studio.

Frehley joined KISS at the start of the band’s career in 1973, after auditioning with singer Paul Stanley, bassist Gene Simmons, and drummer Peter Criss in his hometown of New York. His initial tenure with the band ended in 1982, and Frehley began a solo career as Frehley’s Comet.

Frehley’s onstage antics were as notable as Simmons’ fire-breathing or Stanley ziplining above the crowd. Wearing silver platform boots, Frehley stood with his trademark Gibson Les Paul tilted upwards, sending fireworks and smoke from the neck of his guitar, displaying a rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza never before seen live.

After Frehley’s departure in the early ’80s, Frehley’s relationship with the remaining members of KISS was often strained, but Frehley rejoined the band in 1996 for a major reunion tour. He remained with KISS until 2001, appearing on what was then billed as the band’s farewell tour.

Frehley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the other members of KISS in 2014.

The guitarist is the first original member of KISS to die. Drummer Eric Carr, who replaced Chris in 1980, died of heart cancer in 1991.

Ace Frehley’s “Cold Gin” launched KISS’ career

Born Paul Daniel Frehley in 1951 in the Bronx, New York, the musician began playing the guitar at the age of 13 after receiving one as a Christmas present, and fell in love with the music of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Buddy Guy.

It was in high school that he earned his lifelong nickname, when his friends called him “a real ace” when it came to asking people out on dates.

After years of playing in local bands and earning a steady paycheck as a taxi driver and mailman, Frehley was named KISS’ guitarist after showing up to an audition wearing red and orange sneakers.

When KISS decided to enhance the theatrical element of their musical presentation with elaborate face paint, Frehley adopted an alien persona and adorned his eyes with silver stars. In his 2011 memoir No Regrets, Frehley revealed that his stage identity was tied to his interests in science fiction and space travel.

In addition to captivating generations of guitarists with his combination of cool showmanship and Jimmy Page-inspired playing, Frehley contributed numerous songs to the KISS canon, starting with the band’s 1974 self-titled debut, “Cold Gin.”

Frehley’s dynamic playing is also integral to KISS classics such as “Deuce,” “Detroit Rock City,” and “Love Gun.”

Although his guitar playing was praised, Frehley lacked confidence in his singing ability and was unable to provide lead vocals until 1977’s “Shock Me” from KISS’ album Love Gun.

One of his most memorable songs is a cover of “New York Groove,” originally released by the band Hello in 1976. Frehley recorded the song for his eponymous KISS solo album in 1978 (all band members recorded it that year). Its polished sound and pop-leaning chorus ushered in one of KISS’ most polarizing songs, the disco-flavored “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” released the following year and a No. 11 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ace Frehley’s solo career and the KISS reunion that never happened

For Frehley’s Comet, Frehley released two albums in 1987 (Frehley’s Comet) and 1988 (Second Sighting) with a band that included famed session drummer Anton Figg, a member of Paul Shaffer’s World’s Most Dangerous Band, and bassist John Regan, known for his work with Peter Frampton.

Frehley had minor chart success with the rock songs “Into the Night” and “Rock Soldiers”, but soon decided to drop the Frehley’s Comet name and record under his own name.

Frehley released another solo album, Trouble Walkin’, in 1989 before reuniting with KISS. In the late 2000s, he returned to recording and released six albums, including Origins Vol. 2. 1 2016, Origins Vol. Reached 2nd place in 2020, and will release his final album “10,000 Volts” in 2024.

Frehley, Simmons, and Stanley’s complicated relationship was highlighted during the band’s End of the Road farewell tour.

Before the band’s final show at Madison Square Garden in December 2023, Simmons told USA TODAY that it’s unlikely fans will see Frehley (and Criss) take a final bow with the storied rockers.

“Ace and Peter were in and out of the band three times. We love and cherish them and they will always be part of the KISS family,” Simmons said. “We’ve had many disagreements over unprofessional behavior. KISS has always been a machine. We arrived on time and tried to get them back into the band three times over 30 years, but the result was always the same.”

He added, “I know that without Ace and Peter, KISS wouldn’t have happened. There’s no question about their chemistry. But I don’t think KISS would have survived without Ace and Peter.”

Frehley revisited this disdain in an August 2025 interview with Guitar World, saying that Simmons and Stanley had reneged on their original proposal to reunite the original band one last time.

“A few months before the concert, we both changed our minds and said, ‘Ace and Peter[Chris]can’t do it.'” In fact, Paul went on to say, “If Ace and Peter were on stage with us, the band might be called Piss.” So I got into an argument with him,” Fraley said, adding that reunification remains a possibility.

“I’m a never-say-never type of person,” he said. “I don’t hate Paul or Gene, right? We’re rock’n’roll brothers, and so is Peter, so anything can happen.”

Student loans are also being cancelled. Who is getting them?

0

play

Student loan forgiveness has been reinstated for some Americans, experts say.

The Department of Education (ED) announced in July that it had suspended forgiveness for income-based repayment (IBR) plans as the system was updated to accurately account for eligible monthly payments. IBR plans cancel outstanding loan debt after the borrower has made 240 or 300 monthly payments, or approximately 20 to 25 years of payments, depending on the age of the loan.

Experts say the update is complete and eligible borrowers will have their loans forgiven in the coming months unless they opt out. Although the ED has not announced any debt forgiveness, industry experts report seeing and hearing an email from the department informing borrowers earlier this month.

Stacey McFetress, senior director of education finance at EdAssist by Bright Horizons, which provides education advisory services to organizations and families, said that while news of “trickle” forgiveness is good, “the big picture still remains. Hopes for global loan forgiveness have been dashed.”

How do I know if my student loans will be forgiven?

If a loan is eligible for forgiveness, the borrower should receive an email notification. “As always, borrowers are encouraged to ensure their contact information is accurate and provide up-to-date information to their federal student aid and loan servicers,” McFettle said.

This email must also allow the borrower to opt out of the forgiveness. If a borrower wants to deny forgiveness, they must contact their loan servicer, McFettle said.

Otherwise, the ED will forward the debt collection information to the debt collection agency after October 21, after which the debt collection agency will process the debt collection, he said.

Who is eligible for student loan forgiveness?

To qualify, a borrower must enroll in an IBR plan and make 240 or 300 monthly payments, or approximately 20 to 25 years. Loans made before July 1, 2014 have a payment period of 300 years, or 25 years. Anything acquired after that requires payments of 240, or 20 years.

IBR is one of four repayment plans that take your income into account to determine your monthly payments. The other three IDR plans are Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Income Contingent Repayment (ICR), and Savings on a Valuable Education (SAVE).

According to the ED, payments under the other three plans will only be counted towards forgiveness if the borrower enrolls in IBR.

Will a government shutdown affect pardons?

The government shutdown has already halted a class action lawsuit by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) accusing the Trump administration of slow student loan forgiveness.

Although Justice Department lawyers are unable to work on the case during the shutdown, AFT is asking that the process be resumed as soon as possible to prevent delays that could affect borrowers’ taxes. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 exempted student loan forgiveness from federal taxes until the end of 2025.

“For those borrowers who are already eligible to cancel their loans, there is a real urgency to ensure that their cancellations are processed by the end of the year,” said Persis Yu, deputy executive director and executive advisor of the Student Borrower Protection Center. “Otherwise, they could end up with thousands of dollars in additional tax liability.”

If student debt forgiveness is pushed back to 2026, federal taxes will again apply in addition to state taxes.

Why do borrowers opt out of student loan forgiveness?

McFettle said he has heard that some borrowers may consider opting out of the exemption to avoid tax liability. “But those who opt out will still need to continue repaying their loans,” she says.

Student loan forgiveness is federally tax free until the end of the year, but may still be taxed in some states.

How many Americans will receive student loan forgiveness?

McFettle says it’s difficult to put a hard number on it, but it’s probably small.

About 2 million Americans are enrolled in IBR plans, and only some borrowers are eligible, he said.

Trump critic John Bolton indicted in document investigation

0

John Bolton was charged with 18 criminal counts of possessing and transmitting national defense information.

play

Former national security adviser John Bolton, who has become a critic of President Donald Trump, was indicted on October 16 on charges of improperly preserving national defense information, including allegedly classified documents.

The case is the latest in a series of prosecutions of people considered to be President Trump’s enemies.

The charges come after federal law enforcement said in a court filing that they obtained documents labeled “confidential,” “confidential” and “top secret” during a search of Bolton’s office in August. The charges are the third criminal case filed against a major critic of President Trump in about three weeks.

The attorney recently appointed by President Trump to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Virginia has no experience as a prosecutor but has a personal relationship with Trump and secured the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey and former New York Attorney General Letitia James after Trump publicly called for the indictment of Comey and James.

Mr. Bolton’s lawyer, Abby Rowell, said in a statement that the underlying facts of the case had been investigated and resolved “years before” Mr. Trump returned to the Oval Office.

“These charges stem from portions of Col. Bolton’s personal diary spanning his 45-year career. The records are unclassified, shared only with his immediate family, and were known to the FBI as far back as 2021,” Rowell said.

“Ambassador Bolton, like many public servants throughout history, kept a diary, which was not a crime. We look forward to once again proving that Ambassador Bolton did not illegally share or store any information,” the lawyers added.

“I think he’s a bad guy, you know,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the indictment.

“I think he’s a bad guy. Yeah, he’s a bad guy,” the president said. “It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is. That’s the way it is, isn’t it?”

Who is John Bolton?

Mr. Bolton served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush and as national security adviser to President Trump in his first administration. (It is traditional for former ambassadors to retain their titles even after leaving office.)

In the years since Trump took office, Bolton has become a fierce critic of the president. In 2020, Bolton told USA TODAY that if Trump had been a senator, he “probably” would have convicted Trump at the real estate mogul’s first impeachment trial.

In that case, Trump was charged with abuse of power by withholding aid to Ukraine in order to pressure the government to investigate then-Vice President Joe Biden and his son. The Senate acquitted Trump on the charge largely along party lines.

What is John Bolton accused of?

The indictment alleges that between Bolton’s departure from the administration in September 2019 and July 2021, hackers believed to have ties to Iran accessed Bolton’s emails and classified and national defense information in his accounts.

Mr. Bolton’s representatives notified the government about the hack, the indictment said, but did not say the account contained defense information from his time as national security adviser.

Mr Bolton was charged with 18 offenses, including 10 counts of possessing national defense information and eight counts of transmitting national defense information.

The indictment says these documents revealed covert actions planned by the U.S. government, information confirming that a foreign enemy was responsible for the attack, and the sources and collection methods used to obtain foreign enemy statements.

The allegations against Mr. Bolton are similar to some of the allegations made against Mr. Trump in the past. A federal prosecution alleging Trump mishandled classified documents and another alleging he conspired to steal the 2020 presidential election were both dropped after Trump won the 2024 election.

Prosecutions against President Trump’s opponents

Trump’s bitter past with Comey and James also goes back many years.

President Trump fired Comey in 2017 as the FBI was investigating ties between the 2016 Trump campaign and the Russian government. Comey, who is currently facing charges of lying to Congress and obstructing Congress, has publicly declared his innocence and pleaded not guilty in court.

In 2024, Mr. James won a major civil lawsuit against Mr. Trump over financial fraud. But the New York Court of Appeals threw out a $454 million fine imposed on Trump as a result of the lawsuit, while retaining certain business restrictions on him. James’ office is appealing the decision.

President Trump bans sending troops to Chicago for now

0

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit’s decision upholds a temporary restraining order granted by a federal judge in the Northern District of Illinois.

play

CHICAGO – A federal appeals court will not allow President Donald Trump to send troops into Illinois as part of the crackdown known as Operation Midway Blitz, at least for now, according to a ruling released Oct. 16.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, based in downtown Chicago, ruled in favor of U.S. District Judge April M. Perry’s Oct. 9 decision to bar the White House from sending troops. Lawyers for the Trump administration had argued that protests against the president’s immigration crackdown amounted to insurrection.

The appeals court judges disagreed, stating that “the energetic, sustained, and sometimes violent actions of demonstrators protesting the federal government’s immigration policies and actions do not, in the absence of anything beyond that, create a risk of rebellion against government authority.”

The 7th Circuit’s decision comes as Trump administration officials say the National Guard is needed to strengthen the White House’s efforts to catch the “worst of the worst” criminal immigrants. In blocking the troop deployment, Perry said allowing soldiers into the area would “only add fuel to the fire” that immigration officials have started in and around Chicago.

In response to the ruling, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson said in a statement: “The facts remain unchanged: President Trump used his lawful authority to protect federal personnel and property as violent riots and lawless acts continued as local leaders like Mr. Pritzker refused to intervene to quell them. President Trump will not turn a blind eye to the lawless acts plaguing America’s cities, and we look forward to being vindicated by the high court.”

Trump administration lawyer Eric Hamilton said at an Oct. 9 hearing that the administration believes the move to deploy troops is likely not subject to judicial review.

During President Trump’s blitzkrieg, immigration officials shot and killed a Mexican immigrant. A federal judge sought to restrict immigration officials from using chemical weapons against protesters, journalists, and clergy. Border Patrol agents then shot and killed a woman on the city’s south side.

Homeland Security officials say aggressive tactics are needed to catch criminals. Officials say more than 1,000 migrants have been arrested in connection with the raid. USA TODAY has not been able to confirm the number of arrests or the criminal history of those detained.

President Trump said he would consider invoking the Insurrection Act to send troops to U.S. cities that the White House deems problematic if the courts do not approve the deployment. Invoking a 19th-century law could help avoid the legal challenges President Trump faced when sending in troops.

A similar case regarding President Trump’s deployment of the California National Guard is underway in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

President Trump’s plan aims to reduce IVF costs

0

President Trump’s plan would require lowering costs and eliminating red tape for infertility treatments for employers who want to expand access for workers.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced a plan aimed at expanding access to IVF, aiming to fulfill a 2024 campaign promise by launching a new initiative to reduce IVF costs for families.

The plan, announced by President Trump in the Oval Office on October 17, also calls for eliminating red tape for employers who want to expand access for millions of Americans seeking surgical coverage. However, insurance companies would not be required to cover IFV services, a proposal he supported.

Under the agreement, EMD Serono, the largest U.S. manufacturer of fertility drugs, agreed to reduce drug prices by 42% to 79% under the Most Favored Nation Pricing Agreement. President Trump said this includes lowering the price of Gonal F, a drug that stimulates the ovaries to produce healthy eggs.

The drug is expected to be available in early 2026 through TrumpRx, a website that allows some prescription drugs to be sold directly to consumers. The discount amount is based on the patient’s income.

“There is no greater happiness or joy than raising children, and the millions of Americans who struggle with infertility will have a new opportunity to share their greatest experience,” President Trump said.

In vitro fertilization involves a technique in which eggs and sperm are combined to form embryos in a laboratory.

President Trump’s plan also aims to reduce costs for employers and their workers who are seeking more affordable options for IVF, which can cost between $20,000 and $30,000 per cycle.

The Trump administration plans to expand coverage of infertility treatments for employees and ease restrictions for employers who want to cut costs. The policy would give employers the option to offer infertility treatment as a benefit not tied to medical insurance, similar to how companies offer additional coverage options for dental, vision, and life insurance.

With negotiated savings, eligible consumers can expect to save between $1,200 and $1,900 per cycle, depending on income. This discount is available to individuals with incomes up to 550% of the federal poverty level, or approximately $86,000 per year.

President Trump’s plan is less ambitious than his IVF campaign promise

The federal Departments of Labor, Treasury, and Health and Human Services plan to issue guidance that will allow employers to offer infertility treatment as a benefit independent of health insurance, a senior government official said.

These guidelines will allow companies to provide infertility treatment benefits directly to workers who request them. This will give employers a better idea of how much such benefits cost, and give workers the option to purchase them, government officials said.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, President Trump embraced IFV and promised to expand access to it, seeking to fend off attacks from Democrats who argued that the Supreme Court’s 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade, aided by Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices, had put IVF treatment in jeopardy in some states.

On the campaign trail, Trump called himself the “father of in vitro fertilization.”

At an Oct. 16 Oval Office event, when asked what his message was to pro-life conservatives who religiously oppose IVF, President Trump replied, “I think this is very pro-life. You can’t get more pro-life than this.”

On February 18, President Trump signed an executive order directing his administration to develop a list of recommendations within 90 days to “protect access to IVF and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health insurance costs for IVF treatment.” The White House missed its May deadline.

As of 2024, about half of employers with 500 or more employees were covering IVF as part of their employer health insurance plans, according to benefits consultant Mercer. Coverage was more common among large companies. Mercer said 70% of employers with more than 20,000 workers offered IVF coverage to workers and their dependents.

A recent study shows that fertility coverage is one of the most sought-after benefits for young people in the workforce. According to a study by Maven Clinic, a virtual clinic for women and family health, one survey found that 69% of employees have taken, are considering, or are likely to take a new job to advance their reproductive and family interests.

In a separate study by Gallagher, an insurance and benefits consulting firm, 63% of nearly 700 employees surveyed said they would change jobs for better benefits.

A 2024 study by KFF, a health policy nonprofit, found that about 13% of women of reproductive age said they or their partner needed fertility support services at some point. 14% of these women said they had undergone in vitro fertilization, a type of assisted reproductive technology in which eggs and sperm are combined to form embryos in a laboratory.

President Trump’s IVF plan was announced 16 days after a federal government shutdown that Democrats used to highlight rising health care costs. Democrats are refusing to vote in favor of any Republican-backed government reopening bill unless it reverses recent Republicans’ Medicaid cuts and extends expiring subsidies in the Affordable Care Act.

Winter is approaching, but how cold will it get? Federal forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center gave us the answer Oct. 16 in their annual winter outlook.

Forecasters say a warmer-than-average winter is most likely for much of California, the East Coast, and Florida, as well as the southern United States. Colder-than-average conditions are expected across the Pacific Northwest and upper Midwest.

When it comes to snow and rain, the northern Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes region are most likely to see the most precipitation this winter, the Climate Prediction Center said. However, a drier-than-normal winter is expected in the southern tier of the country, especially in the southeast.

The center’s forecast covers the months of December, January and February, known as meteorological winter months.

Which regions will experience a colder-than-average winter in 2025-2026?

“A region that extends eastward from parts of the Pacific Northwest, including the northern Rockies, northern Plains, and upper Mississippi Valley, is most likely to experience colder-than-normal conditions,” said John Gottschalk, director of operational forecasting at the Climate Prediction Center.

He added that far southeastern mainland Alaska and the Alaska Panhandle could also experience below-normal temperatures this winter.

Which regions will experience a warmer-than-average winter in 2025-2026?

Gottschalk said warmer-than-normal temperatures are most likely to occur in California, the southern Great Basin, the southern Rocky Mountains, the Southwest up to Texas, the Southeast and the mid-Atlantic coast.

Much of Alaska’s north and west coasts will also experience above-average temperatures. He said the areas most confident about warming are the Southwest, southern Florida and northwest Alaska.

Snow forecast uncertain, but NOAA predicts precipitation

The forecast, released Oct. 16, predicts only those areas where temperatures are most likely to be above or below normal, and precipitation is likely to be above or below normal.

This winter’s forecast doesn’t specify how much precipitation we’ll get in the form of rain, snow, or ice, only that we can expect more or less precipitation overall. The center said snow forecasts depend on the strength and path of the winter storm, which typically cannot be predicted more than a week in advance.

Given the La Niña phenomenon, which is bringing below-normal precipitation to the southwestern United States, the drought will most likely continue or worsen in some regions.

However, the Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky Mountains are likely to experience higher-than-normal precipitation during the winter, and improvement in drought conditions is hoped for in these regions.

“An important point to add is that we are forecasting increased drought in the southern Plains, Southeast, and south-central Atlantic regions,” Gottschalk said.

What are the main drivers of weather across the country this winter?

Gottschalk said the main factor was the resurgence of La Niña. Although this phenomenon is considered a weak event and is likely to be of shorter duration than usual, its impact is likely to be greatest during the winter months and therefore has a significant impact on the outlook.

Another factor includes a mass of warm water in the Pacific Ocean that is currently stagnant off the West Coast. “There may be potential impacts as widespread sea surface temperatures in the North Pacific are currently well above average,” he said. However, he said these temperatures “can change very quickly due to changes in the path of the storm, so the impact on the forecast is very uncertain, but is being taken into account.”

What about the polar vortex?

“Unfortunately, we can only clearly predict the strength of the stratospheric polar vortex up to two to three weeks in advance,” Gottschalk said. “Therefore, we cannot make concrete and reliable predictions about its strength this far in advance.”

But he added that the conditions expected this winter “slightly tilt the odds that the polar vortex will weaken at times this winter.” As the polar vortex weakens, the probability of an arctic atmospheric explosion occurring across the country increases, he said.

I can’t think of any other pattern

Weather patterns such as the Arctic Oscillation, which can bring frigid temperatures to the central and eastern United States, are not currently included in this official forecast because they cannot be predicted more than a week or two in advance.

Other large-scale weather patterns in the atmosphere that can affect winter weather include the Madden-Julian Oscillation, which can affect the number of heavy rain events along the West Coast. The phenomenon could also contribute to other extreme events in the United States, such as winter arctic air events in the central and eastern United States, according to the Climate Prediction Center.

This forecast also does not take into account snowfall in Siberia, which other forecasters use as the basis for their winter weather forecasts.

What about other winter forecasts?

AccuWeather also released its winter forecast in early October, with the private forecaster saying a “bookend winter” has arrived in the central and eastern United States, with the biggest storms expected in the opening and final weeks of the season. “Regions of the country, particularly parts of the Midwest, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions, could see a severe and stormy winter,” said AccuWeather Chief Long Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

Elsewhere, a warm, dry pattern is expected to be most pronounced in California and the Southwest, with worsening drought conditions and unseasonable wildfire risk, according to AccuWeather.

Is it cheaper to repair your car or buy a new one in 2025?

When considering whether to buy a new car or repair your current vehicle, for most of us it simply comes down to money and money.

That’s the decision this reporter faced earlier this year when he chose to spend the money and install a remanufactured engine in his 2010 Ford Fusion with a three-year warranty, rather than buying a new car. The cost of the engine was just over $7,900, including labor and additional work done at the time.

So far, this decision seems to be the right one. After all, the price of a new car remains a challenge for many consumers. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for a new car in July was $48,841.

Sean Tucker, managing editor at Kelley Blue Book, offers some simple advice:

“Lean towards fixing the old.”

It’s not just the total cost that matters, but the average monthly payment, which was $756 in the second quarter of this year, according to Edmunds.com.

“Currently, you pay $9,000 a year in car payments. … That’s a ton of money for new shocks and belts,” Tucker said, referring to the general maintenance costs of keeping a car running.

Given the long lifespans of today’s vehicles, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to continue to be around, especially when you consider that the average age of a vehicle on the roads in this country is nearly 13 years.

Of course, sometimes these repairs can be problematic.

“If the annual cost of keeping your car running exceeds its value, you may want to consider a new car,” said Joseph Yun, consumer insights analyst at Edmunds.

He said cars that are 15 years old will likely have more problems needing repair, noting that the longer it takes to repair a car means the wheels may come off for a while.

Newer vehicles also come with new or updated features that older vehicles may lack. plus. It smells like a new car.

However, many owners who have owned a car for a long time tend to be attached to it.

“If you go into an area like that, who am I to tell you how much you should spend (to maintain operations)?” Ms. Yun said.

Both Yun and Tucker said it’s a tough market for car buyers, with prices and interest rates remaining high.

Unless the car you’re driving is in such bad condition that it doesn’t make sense to keep it, Yun said, “be nice to your mechanic and don’t try to get a deal that might not exist.”

Another consideration, Yun said, is the additional cost of insurance, which means it’s more expensive to insure a new car than an old one.

But leasing a new car is another option, considering that lease payments are generally lower than what you would pay for a new car.

Mr. Yoon chose this option more than ten years ago when his 1998 Lexus GS, which had 189,000 miles on the clock, needed an expensive repair that was beyond the norm at the time. He believed monthly lease payments were more manageable than paying thousands of dollars in additional repairs to keep the car long-term. He used the trade-in to pay for the lease.

However, ultimately it is a personal decision.

“Only you know your finances,” Tucker said, noting that it’s generally best to stay out of debt for as long as possible.
