Top 5 full-size pickup trucks to buy in 2025

0

Full-size pickup trucks are America’s most popular vehicle, and competition among manufacturers for their attention is fierce. Despite huge demand, with the recent exit of Nissan and its Titan from the market, there are only five brands competing in the entire market, two of which are from the same company (General Motors). Competing with the big players in this ring is the ultimate challenge, and each must bring something special to the table to have a chance.

5. 2025 Toyota Tundra – MT Score: 8.2/10

The recently refreshed 2025 Toyota Tundra now features a turbocharged V6 that provides even more oomph than the previous V8. The Tundra is available in three trim levels of powertrains, the first two being different tunings of the standard turbo V6, and the third adding an electric motor for extra power. All three models use a 10-speed AT transmission. For commuting and standard housekeeping, the Tundra is a solid choice, especially considering the spacious heated and ventilated rear seats. That being said, other trucks do a better job of towing, hauling, and driving for the price. Most perplexing in our testing were the Tundra’s build quality issues, which are not common in Toyota products.

4. 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – MT Score: 8.5/10

You’ll need to spring for at least the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500’s LT trim to get the best interior in the truck, but this pickup shares the impressive powertrain lineup of its Sierra sibling. Although it lacks a basic interior, the revised up-trim interior is nice and comes with a ton of technology, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play apps. Hands-free Super Cruise (works while towing!) is available on upper trims, as is the Sierra, but the Silverado also has the Sierra’s occasional dynamic jerkiness.

3. 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 – MT Score: 8.5/10

GM’s mechanically twinned Silverado and 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 both offer a wide range of configurations rivaled only by the Ford F-150, including multiple bed lengths and three cab size options. The options menu also features one of the industry’s best powertrain lineups, offering everything from an inexpensive 2.7-liter turbo I-4 with 430 lb-ft of torque to an efficient and rugged 3.0-liter turbodiesel to multiple gas-fed small-block V-8s. In addition to power, the Sierra is easy on the eyes and has some of the best hands-free driving aids on the market, making highway driving a breeze. Super Cruise is a high-tech system, but some of the Sierra’s simpler features are less cohesive, such as the rather nervous suspension. However, the towing capacity is amazing.

2. 2025 Ford F-150 – MT Score: 8.9/10

For the casual observer, it may be hard to tell that the Ford F-150, which was updated last year and will continue through 2025, is no different from its predecessor. This revision brings only minor changes to the exterior, and the interior technology upgrades aren’t exactly game-changing. It may sound like faint praise, but Ford was wise to not make too radical changes to America’s most popular truck. Instead, Ford has reinvested in making the F-150 a truck that anyone can do just about anything. The options are endless. All-electric, supercharged V-8, hybrid turbocharged V-6, or naturally aspirated Coyote V-8 are just a few of the powertrain options available, along with a huge list of options and configurations, all at prices that are on par or slightly lower than the competition. Although the F-150’s interior isn’t as luxurious as the Ram’s, it still offers great comfort and great technology.

1. 2025 Ram 1500 – MT Score: 9/10

Ram stands out from its competitors thanks to its knack for knowing what Americans actually use full-size trucks like the 2025 Ram 1500 for on a daily basis. The Ram is the ultimate cruising truck with plush seating and an extremely comfortable interior, perfect for long distance trips. Already a solid truck, the 1500 has been improved for 2025 with the bold move of eliminating the V-8 engine option. For the regular 1500, this means the Hemi V-8 is gone, as is the off-road-focused TRX model and its supercharged V-8. Will American truck manufacturers abandon V8 engines? You’ll forget all about those big engines once you sample the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine alternative, available in two states. The standard-output version makes 420 horsepower, more than the 5.7-liter V-8 it replaces, and the high-output version that powers the Upper Crust 1500 Limited and the new Tungsten trim level (and effectively replaces the TRX, otherwise identical RHO) radle makes 540 horsepower. All 2025 1500s wear new front-end styling, while all but the Tradesman work truck (and the Warlock, the excellent off-roader it’s based on) have had updated interiors with improved technology. Oh, and did we mention that all these upgrades were enough for the 2025 Ram 1500 to win the MotorTrend Truck of the Year award?

  3. V-8 doesn’t appeal to some people

President Trump says Venezuelan President Maduro “doesn’t want anything to do with” the US

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump used choice words to explain why Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro offered the United States a controlling interest in Venezuela’s natural resources.

“He’s provided everything. You know why?” President Trump said in response to a reporter’s question on Oct. 17. “Because he doesn’t want anything to do with America.”

Amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and Venezuela, the New York Times reported that President Maduro is proposing to open Venezuela’s oil and gold projects to U.S. companies, give preferential contracts to U.S. companies, move Venezuela’s oil experts from China to the United States, and reduce the country’s energy contracts with Chinese, Iranian, and Russian companies.

The Times reported that each concession, made privately behind the scenes, was part of Maduro’s government’s efforts to ease the growing conflict between the two countries. The Trump administration rejected these offers and severed diplomatic relations with the South American country this month.

Trump’s comments came as his administration has conducted five military airstrikes against boats in the Caribbean since September in an effort to seize vessels suspected of smuggling drugs. President Trump said this week that he is considering U.S. military strikes against land targets to combat drug leaks from Venezuelan cartels.

President Trump criticized President Maduro for allowing Venezuelan immigrants and illegal drugs to enter the United States.

The president acknowledged on October 15 that his administration had secretly authorized the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuela as the campaign against President Maduro intensified.

Asked by a reporter earlier this week whether the CIA had the authority to “remove” President Maduro, President Trump replied, “Isn’t that a stupid question for me to answer? But I think Venezuela is feeling the heat.”

Social security watchdog warns citizens about Supreme Court’s ‘fraudulent letter’

0

play

If you think you’ve heard from the U.S. Supreme Court recently, you’re likely the victim of a new “high-pressure scam,” government officials say.

The Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General (SSA OIG) issued a warning on Wednesday, October 8, about “government fraud.” The independent government agency called on beneficiaries of the program to be on high alert in case they are or are targeted.

According to the SSA OIG, the communication does not appear to be legitimate because it is printed on “fake U.S. Supreme Court letterhead,” refers to specific government officials, and uses forged signatures.

The altered elements of the “certificates,” including letterheads and signatures, were intended to persuade some of the program’s 75 million beneficiaries to “cooperate with designated SSA officials and pressure them to send money or share personal information.”

“At every level, this letter is completely false. Fraudsters continue to exploit fear and confusion by impersonating government agencies and officials,” SSA OIG Acting Inspector General Michelle L. Anderson said in a statement.

Here’s what you need to know about the New Government Scam, including what to do if you think you or a loved one has been targeted.

What to do if you receive a “scam email”

Anderson said anyone who received the “scam letter” or other communication in question should “tear it up and report it.”

“These criminals falsely accuse individuals of crimes and use federal agencies and employees to instill fear and justify their fraud,” Anderson said. “Beware of variations of this scam.”

Scammers may also follow up with phone calls or text messages to justify their “scam letter” claims.

There are several things to be aware of, including additional falsifications that may be included in the letter.

  • error. (For example, it is incorrectly named “Drug Enforcement Administration.”)
  • Claims made in connection with pending legal proceedings or criminal charges.
  • Allegations that Social Security numbers were issued as a result of identity theft and compromise.
  • Claims regarding frozen assets or issues with banking or investment balances.
  • The letter itself is a “certificate”.
  • Official style letterhead and signature.
  • Wording such as “The recipient is fully responsible for any losses incurred.”

How to protect yourself from Social Security scams

Here are some tips to protect you and your loved ones from Social Security-related scams, courtesy of SSA IOG.

  • Be wary of individuals or entities claiming to be from SSA or other government agencies.
  • Before giving out personal information or sending money, stop, think, and talk to someone you trust.
  • Stay up to date on the latest fraud alerts and techniques by following SSA’s OIG on social media platforms like X, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

George Santos freed after Trump commutes sentence

play

President Donald Trump commuted former Congressman George Santos’ seven-year prison sentence and released him on October 17th.

Mr. Santos, a 37-year-old Republican from New York, turned himself in on July 25 at the Federal Correctional Facility Flatiron Satellite Camp in New Jersey and was sentenced to seven years in prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. As part of his argument, he admitted to filing false campaign finance reports, fraudulently charging donors’ credit cards and fraudulently receiving unemployment benefits, among other actions that began years before he ran for Congress in 2022.

Santos represented Queens and parts of Long Island for 11 months. He recently published an open letter directly addressing President Trump (who has previously pardoned prominent supporters) using flattering language.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “George Santos was a ‘thug’ in some ways, but there are many thugs in this country who should not be sentenced to seven years in prison.” “At least Santos always had the courage, the conviction, and the intelligence to vote Republican! George has been in solitary confinement for long periods of time and has suffered horrific abuse for all to see. That’s why I just signed a commutation of sentence that will immediately release George Santos from prison. Good luck George, have a great life!”

Santos was also ordered to pay more than $370,000 in restitution and forfeit an additional $200,000.

Santos was exposed as a habitual liar after his victory. He falsely claimed to work for a prestigious Wall Street firm, be Jewish, be a relative of Holocaust survivors, and have multiple degrees from a university he never attended. The report also revealed that Santos was charged with fabricating a vast real estate portfolio, concealing his past marital status and writing fraudulent checks in Brazil, which he later admitted.

He was expelled from Congress in a bipartisan vote following the release of the House Ethics Report.

Bipartisan condemnation of Santos also supported by some Republicans

After Santos’ crimes were revealed, many of his fellow Republicans harshly criticized him. New York Congressman Mike Lawler said Santos was a “sociopath” who was “deceiving voters and donors,” adding that “the evidence is overwhelming.”

Some continued to hold that position even after President Trump’s announcement.

Rep. Andrew Garbarino, a Long Island Republican, said he complained about Mr. Santos’ willingness to plead guilty to federal crimes and then have to serve time in prison. “The victims of Mr. Santos’ crimes, including the people he stole from and the voters he defrauded, have yet to fully recover,” Garbarino said in a statement. “He has shown no remorse whatsoever. Spending less than three months in prison is not justice.”

But Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, an ardent Trump supporter with a maverick personality, asked President Trump in July to commute Santos’ prison sentence.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, immediately criticized Santos’ ouster on social media.

“Donald Trump has time to release serial fraudster George Santos from prison,” Jeffries wrote. “But he won’t bother addressing the Republican health crisis that is devastating working class Americans. Extremists insult you every day.”

A get-out-of-jail-free card for Trump supporters?

Since his first term, Trump has pardoned some close allies for crimes such as financial fraud and witness tampering.

Among the celebrities pardoned is real estate billionaire Charles Kushner, father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Former President Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Immediately after taking office on January 20, 2025, Trump pardoned over 1,500 rioters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 to prevent the certification of his defeat against Joe Biden.

In April, President Trump pardoned Paul Walczak for tax crimes three weeks after his mother attended a $1 million per person fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago.

Zoran Mamdanani receives over 50% support in New York mayoral race

0

The poll also includes Mayor Eric Adams, who withdrew from the race but whose name will remain on the ballot, potentially hurting Andrew Cuomo’s chances.

play

NEW YORK – Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani may win a majority of voters in New York’s mayoral race, according to a FOX News poll.

In the days leading up to the November 4 election, a poll released on October 16 showed Mr Mamdani, a democratic socialist state lawmaker, won 52% of likely voters and 49% of registered voters. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an independent candidate, has a more than 20-point lead over Mamdani, winning 28% of both likely voters and registered voters.

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s approval rating was around 13-14%.

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted a week earlier showed Mamdani’s approval rating at 46%, compared to 33% for Cuomo and 15% for Sliwa. Polls show support for Mr. Cuomo increased after Mayor Eric Adams withdrew from the race on September 28.

But the Fox News poll also included Adams’ name, as his name will appear on New Yorkers’ ballots in the Nov. 4 general election. Mr. Adams received only 2% to 3% of voters, potentially further hurting Mr. Cuomo’s chances of making a comeback after losing to Mr. Mamdani in the Democratic primary in June.

“Today’s poll shows that a majority of New Yorkers reject Andrew Cuomo’s billionaire-backed politics of the past and join Zoran Mamdani’s movement for a new kind of politics that responds to the people, not Donald Trump and the billionaire class,” Mamdani campaign spokeswoman Dora Pekek said in a statement, referring to the big spending on Cuomo’s behalf. Trump-supporting billionaires like Bill Ackman.

Instead of commenting on the poll, a spokesperson for Cuomo’s campaign pointed to the former governor’s appearance on the conservative radio show “Sid and Friends in the Morning.”

In that appearance, Mr. Cuomo appealed to Republicans to vote for him instead of Mr. Sliwa to defeat Mr. Mamdani.

“If Curtis doesn’t race, I win,” he said. “And that’s the Republican choice.”

The Fox News poll sampled more than 1,000 registered voters who responded to the survey via landline phone, cell phone or online text message between Oct. 10 and 14.

Polls have shown Mamdani, 33, consistently in the lead since his upset victory over Cuomo in a crowded Democratic primary.

A Sept. 24 Fox News poll found that most voters want significant changes in city government. The poll found comparisons between Cuomo, a three-term former governor who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations, and Mamdani, a new state lawmaker.

Candidates launch new attacks in first debate

Results announced ahead of the first mayoral debate in the general election. During the two-hour event, Mamdani and Cuomo appeared center stage with Sliwa in the middle.

Issues ranged from international, such as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, to local, such as a parade that reflected the city’s diversity.

Cuomo attacked Mamdani for his views on past calls to “defund the police,” which Mamdani denied. Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Sliwa each criticized Mr. Mamdani for not supporting the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. Two of Mamdani’s opponents also questioned how he could enact his signature policies of freezing rents and making buses free.

Mamdani attacked Cuomo over his response to the COVID-19 pandemic and questioned his ties to Muslim New Yorkers.

Some of the sharpest criticism of Cuomo came from Sliwa. At one point, the three got into an argument over who could best fend off President Donald Trump, who has already withheld federal funds from the city.

“I know you think you’re the toughest man alive, but let me tell you something,” Sliwa told Cuomo. “You lost the primary. You were rejected by the Democrats. And it’s hard for you to understand what the word ‘no’ means.”

Mamdani stood by silently, only interjecting when Suriwa agreed.

The next and final debate will be on Spectrum News on October 22nd.

Diane Keaton took refuge in Palm Springs before her death

play

Palm Springs was a haven for the late Diane Keaton.

The Academy Award-winning actress, who died of pneumonia on October 11 at the age of 79, spent several months in California’s Coachella Valley after her Los Angeles home was damaged by wildfires in January.

Songwriter Carol Bayer Sager recently told People that when she met Keaton a few weeks before her death, after Keaton returned from Palm Springs, she was “astounded at how much weight she had lost.”

Sager, who co-wrote Keaton’s only solo single, “First Christmas,” told the magazine that Keaton had been seeing his friends less recently because he was spending a lot of time in the desert.

Nyla Doering, former public relations manager for The Living Desert Zoo and Garden, told The Desert Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Keaton’s involvement with the desert goes back even further. While Doering was at the zoo from 2011 to 2013, Keaton was a “friend of the park” and frequently stopped by the zoo with her daughter.

She was always disguised under her signature floppy hat and oversized sunglasses, blending in with visitors while enjoying the animals up close, Doering said.

“We know she enjoyed feeding the giraffes, and we heard she even ‘adopted’ a baby warthog one season. We don’t know if any of our guests recognized her, and we never publicized her visit,” Doering added. “The Living Desert is a special, peaceful place to be in nature and interact with animals, and that’s what we wanted to give her. Giving her that space was a testament to how much the park staff, including myself, loved her. She was one of a kind.”

Diane Keaton broke out in Hollywood in the 1970s.

Keaton broke out in Hollywood in the 1970s as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather series, playing the girlfriend and later wife of Al Pacino’s iconic gangster Michael Corleone.

Her prestigious career also included appearances in “The First Wives Club,” “Manhattan,” and “Annie Hall,” for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1978. Known for his blend of emotion and quirky likability, Keaton gained fans for his performances in comedies such as 1980’s “Baby Boom,” 1990’s “Father of the Bride” and 1990’s “Something’s Gotta Give.” 2000s.

Born in Los Angeles on January 5, 1946, she grew up as Diane Hall, the eldest of four children, before choosing a new last name. Mr. Hall had already been acquired by someone else in Actors’ Equity.

She studied theater at Santa Ana College in Orange County and briefly continued her education at the University of Southern California before leaving LA to enroll at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Drama in New York City.

How did Diane Keaton die?

New details surrounding the Oscar-winning actress’ death have been revealed.

A copy of Keaton’s death certificate obtained by USA TODAY on Oct. 16 indicated that the “immediate cause” of her death was primary bacterial pneumonia. Several days passed between her onset of illness and her death at a hospital in Santa Monica, California. No other significant factors were cited in Keaton’s death.

The “First Wives Club” actress was cremated on October 14th.

People magazine first reported the news.

US indicts Louisiana man for participating in Hamas atrocities

Prosecutors said cellphone location data showed Mahmoud Amin Yaqub al-Muftadi, 33, of Lafayette, Louisiana, was at the scene of a devastating attack on a kibbutz near Gaza.

play

A Louisiana man described by prosecutors as a “monster” was indicted on Oct. 17 for participating in a 2023 Hamas raid that sparked a deadly conflict with Israel.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that Mahmoud Amin Yaqub Al Muftadi, 33, was arrested in Lafayette, Louisiana. According to court documents, the Gaza native belonged to a Palestinian military organization. On the day of the attack by Hamas, cell phone location data showed he was at the site of a kibbutz just outside the Gaza Strip, where dozens of people were killed and 19 captured.

“After hiding in the United States, this monster was discovered and charged with participating in the atrocities of October 7, the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement announcing the arrest. “While nothing can fully heal the scars left by Hamas’s brutal attack, the Department’s Joint Task Force on October 7th is dedicated to finding and prosecuting those responsible for that horrific day, which included the murder of dozens of American citizens.”

According to the Israeli government, al-Muftadi was arrested on October 16, more than two years after the attack that killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others. Gaza responded by launching a devastating campaign that flattened much of the population center and killed more than 66,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

According to prosecutors, the suspected terrorist fighter entered the United States on September 12, 2024, by providing false information on his visa application.

The last 20 living hostages remaining in Gaza were returned to Israel on October 13 in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees and prisoners of war. Hamas returned the bodies of several hostages who died on October 14.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, al-Muftadi was a fighter in the military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Prosecutors said he also joined the Gaza-based militia National Resistance Brigades on October 7.

Prosecutors say the suspect took part in the attack on Kibbutz Kfar Azha, a small community just two miles from the Gaza border.

John A. Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said, “Once al-Muftadi learned of the unfolding brutal attacks against civilians in multiple countries, including Israel and the United States, he immediately sprang into action. He armed himself, recruited more looters, and then entered Israel, where there is evidence that he was close to one of the hardest-hit Israeli communities.” “Al-Muftadi then fraudulently obtained a visa to enter the United States, hoping to remain undetected. This arrest marks the first public step toward bringing to justice those responsible for harming Americans that day.”

Al-Muftadi was discovered on Oct. 7 by the Joint Task Force, a group Bondi founded to track those involved in the Oct. 7 attack, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Al-Muftadi’s lawyer could not be reached. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI did not respond to further questions about the case.

Ego Nwodim most recently announced his departure after seven seasons, saying on September 12, “The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight.” Heidi Gardner, who joined SNL in 2017, also left the show, as did cast members Devon Walker, Emil Wakim and Michael Longfellow.

“SNL” creator Lorne Michaels told Entertainment Tonight that while “it’s always tough when people leave,” change is “good” for the show. “And we’re really excited about the people we’re bringing in,” he added.

Comedians Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall, Cam Patterson and Veronica Slawkowska have been added to the cast of SNL Season 51.

The new season featured some memorable moments, including Bad Bunny being named (and criticized) as the headliner for the upcoming Super Bowl. This season saw the return of Amy Poehler as host and reunited with four other former and current “Weekend Update” anchors for “Jokes.” The night also featured a parody of “SNL” alumnus Pam Bondi, which drew a sharp response from the attorney general.

Sabrina Carpenter will star in a double role starting October 18th.

Popeyes’ Cajun-style turkey, which has taken social media by storm over the past few years, is back and available to order ahead of Thanksgiving.

Pre-cooked and seasoned turkeys can be delivered to your home or picked up at your local Popeyes store while supplies last.

Customers can thaw, heat and serve Popeyes turkeys, which arrive frozen, as an alternative to the traditional homemade Thanksgiving bird. A bird weighing 11 to 13 pounds will feed 8 to 12 people.

Popular items typically sell out well before Thanksgiving. Prices vary depending on whether the turkey is delivered or picked up from a Popeyes store.

Here’s what you need to know to buy before they’re sold out.

How to get Popeyes’ Cajun-style turkey

Customers can order Popeyes Cajun turkeys online at turkeys.popeyes.com. The website also includes cooking instructions.

Turkeys can be ordered for delivery anywhere in the United States except Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Shipping orders will be shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order, depending on your location. Popeyes says orders placed on or over the weekend will be shipped on Monday.

How much does a Cajun turkey at Popeyes cost?

Ordering a turkey for delivery costs $99.

If you pick it up at a Popeyes store, the Cajun turkey costs $54.99.

Popeyes launches other holiday sales

In addition to the Cajun-style turkey, Popeyes is also running several other promotions during the holiday season, according to a news release.

  • Through October 19th, receive a free signature sauce with any Popeyes purchase. Inspired by the Cajun flavors of New Orleans, the new sauce blends bell peppers, celery, onions and a touch of spiciness.
  • Popeyes brings back big box deals. This includes your choice of signature chicken or 3-piece tenders, side, biscuit, and Popeyes’ new signature sauce for $6.

Officials announce case of severe mpox strain confirmed in California

0

play

California health officials are investigating cases of a more severe form of mpox after confirming a local outbreak in the United States that officials first identified.

The Los Angeles County Department of Health announced in an Oct. 17 press release that three cases of clade I mpox were confirmed in Los Angeles County this week in people who had not recently traveled to countries where the virus is common. Although a separate clade, or group, of mpox has existed in the United States for years, these new cases are the first of their kind that appear to have spread locally rather than through exposure while traveling abroad.

Public health officials say this type of mpox is associated with more severe illness. Nine clade I mpox cases have been reported in the United States this year, with the remainder associated with international travel.

The first local case was reported in Long Beach on October 14th, and two more cases were reported in other areas of Los Angeles County on the 16th and 17th. All three were hospitalized and then sent home to isolate and recover, officials said. No further details about the patients have been released, and no clear link between the cases has been identified.

The risk to the public remains low, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in a statement. However, it is recommended that people at high risk be vaccinated against this disease if they have not already been vaccinated.

“The confirmation of a third case with no travel history raises concerns about the potential for localized spread within Los Angeles County,” Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis said in a press release. “We are working closely with our partners to identify potential sources of infection and understand how this potentially more serious type of mpox virus is spreading.”

What is npox?

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is an infectious viral disease caused by a virus. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is most commonly accompanied by a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, and low energy.

There are two clades, or groups, of viruses, Clade I and Clade II, each with two subclades. A clade is a biological group that all descends from one common ancestor.

Clade II usually involves mild to moderate disease, whereas clade I can be more severe. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, clade II has been present in the United States since 2022, with 118 people infected in 2025. Although there have been several clade 1 cases brought back to the United States by international travelers, the new cases are the first to be linked to domestic spread. Clade I has also been identified in recent outbreaks in Africa.

How does mpox spread?

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both clades of viruses can be spread through close contact with people infected with M.P.O.X., contact with contaminated materials, and contact with live or dead infected wild animals. The risk from infected animals is highest in West and Central Africa, where cases are more common.

Infections are often associated with intimate contact, such as kissing, sex, and skin-to-skin contact. Direct contact with chickenpox rashes and scabs, and contaminated body fluids such as mucus, saliva, and blood are the most common ways people transmit the virus to each other. Mothers can pass infections to their babies during pregnancy, childbirth, and after birth.

According to the WHO, the virus can be transmitted from animals to humans through animal bites or scratches, or when humans come into contact with infected bodily fluids while hunting, cooking, preparing or eating animals. It can also be spread through contact with unsterilized objects, fabrics, and surfaces.

Accidental infection through respiratory exposure is unlikely, so sharing the same air indoors is unlikely to lead to infection.

“Anyone with an unexplained rash or lesions should seek immediate treatment. Talk openly with your intimate partner and your health care provider. Early action protects you and others,” Long Beach Public Health Physician Dr. Cliff Okada said in an Oct. 14 statement.

Symptoms of Mpox

According to the CDC and WHO, symptoms of MPOX begin within 21 days of exposure to the virus, and the typical incubation period, or asymptomatic period, is 3 to 17 days.

Infected people usually experience a noticeable rash that gradually appears on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth, or near the genitals. The rash may appear as raised dots, similar to acne. Symptoms usually last 2 to 4 weeks.

Although most people recover without serious medical intervention, the virus can cause serious illness.

Other common symptoms include:

  • heat
  • cold
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • Exhausted
  • muscle pain and back pain
  • headache
  • Respiratory symptoms (sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, etc.)

If you think you have been exposed to Mpox and develop any symptoms, contact your doctor. They may also recommend testing and supportive care. The CDC recommends that if you think you may be infected, avoid close contact with others and wear a mask in public.

Depending on how far you drive, your chances of finding a $20,000 car increase

0

play

  • More used cars under $20,000 are on sale this year than last year.
  • Experts said that to find the ideal affordable deal, car buyers may have to travel miles to make a good choice.
  • The list below includes some of the top deals under $20,000.

If you’re trying to find a used car for around $20,000, it’s much more difficult now than it was five years ago.

But the good news is that it’s easier this year than last, with around 40,000 more cars in the same price range being traded in and listed for sale, and affordable used car inventory increasing slightly, experts say.

However, that doesn’t mean more places are easier to find or closer, so it really depends on how far you’re willing to drive to find that worthwhile deal. So where can you find the most affordable used car if you want to stay in-state? Look to the big cities.

“Larger (Michigan) markets like Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Flint, Saginaw and Bay City are leading in terms of total listings, but smaller areas like Traverse City, Cadillac, Lansing and Marquette have the least amount of[affordable used cars],” Kevin Roberts, director of economic market intelligence at CarGurus, told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. “Depending on where you live and what you’re looking for, it can be beneficial to widen your search to find the right car at the right price, especially if one of the areas with a high concentration of affordable cars is within a reasonable distance.”

Many car shopping sites, including CarGurus, let you search by distance to compare options and decide if it’s worth it.

Roberts said the Detroit area has the highest concentration of affordable properties in Michigan, so “for those living in the Detroit metropolitan area, searching within a 50-mile radius is likely to hit the sweet spot between range of options and ease of access to view cars in person.”

Nationally, large cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago have the largest inventories of used cars priced under $20,000, Roberts said. Places like Glendive, Montana, but Presque Isle, Maine, and Fairbanks, Alaska, have the least.

Other national examples based on designated market regions include Roanoke-Lynchburg, Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News (all in Virginia), and Sacramento-Stockton-Mosto (California), which have the highest percentage of used cars listed at affordable prices compared to all used cars sold, Roberts said.

“Meanwhile, Odessa-Midland, Laredo and San Angelo (all in Texas) have the lowest shares,” he added.

Big trends right now: Buyers look for value

Car shopping website CarGurus recently released its Q3 2025 Market Intelligence Report. This report provides car buyers and sellers with insight into new and used vehicle demand, as well as price and inventory trends.

Most of this year’s growth in used retail sales is for vehicles priced under $30,000, with buyers trading model year and mileage to find value, the report said. This segment accounted for approximately three-quarters of the year-over-year increase in used car sales. The growth in sales of cars priced under $30,000 is primarily focused on cars that are seven years old or older.

The report said affordability conditions vary by region, and affordability-conscious shoppers are likely to need to broaden their horizons to find their ideal car. California, Florida, Texas and Virginia accounted for the largest share of used inventory under $20,000, with at least 30% of September listings in this range, according to CarGurus data.

You get little for your money

About five years ago, used cars priced under $20,000 accounted for nearly half of all used car listings nationwide, Roberts said. Currently, these vehicles account for only one-third of all used car listings. Still, the number of used cars priced under $20,000 is up 6% year-over-year, according to CarGurus data, which translates to an additional 40,000 vehicles to choose from in the same price range.

What this change means is that what you got for $20,000 five years ago, you can’t get for the same deal today.

“In 2020, you could buy a 1.7 year old Camry with 31,400 miles at that price, and in 2025 you could buy a 2.2 year old Corolla with 42,200 miles,” Roberts said. “That means over five years, for the same budget, we reduced the size of the vehicle while simultaneously increasing the age and mileage of the vehicle.”

As another example, in 2020, you could buy a 1.8 year old Equinox with 28,900 miles for $20,000. Roberts said. Right now, $20,000 will get you a 3.2-year-old Equinox with 47,000 miles.

Here’s what you can get for 20,000 yen

Still, Roberts said buyers will be willing to compromise, given that the strongest growth in used car sales has come from listings priced under $30,000.

Roberts looked at the most popular models on the market today and searched for used cars priced under $20,000.

“What we found was a wide range of brands and body styles to suit every type of driver, from sedans like the Altima and Malibu to trucks and SUVs like the Equinox, F-150 and CR-V,” Roberts said.

The top five on his list are:

  • 2019 Chevrolet Equinox: Average list price is $14,019, average mileage is 90,228.
  • 2020 chevrolet malibu: Average list price is $15,125, average mileage is 74,452.
  • 2014 Ford F-150: Average list price is $14,213, average mileage is 146,479.
  • 2017 ford escape: Average list price is $12,337, average mileage is 92,474.
  • 2019 Nissan Altima: Average list price is $13,997, average mileage is 85,125.

Beware of high shipping charges

Roberts cautioned that while expanding your search distance will give you more options, you’ll also need to “calculate the cost of getting to the dealership if you want to view the car or planning a trade-in, and the dealer delivery fee if you want the car to come to your home.”

He said some dealers cover shipping costs, while others include a flat rate or per-mile fee.

“That calculation really depends on each person’s individual scenario: how well a new car will fit, the cost of gas and personal time, and the ultimate savings compared to a more familiar car,” Roberts said.

Trump says Russia-to-Alaska tunnel proposal is ‘interesting’

0

A Kremlin envoy floated the proposal as a “symbol of unity” between the two countries as President Trump seeks to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump was vague when asked about the possibility of building a tunnel from Russia to Alaska, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not like the proposal.

“That’s interesting,” President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office at the White House on Oct. 17. “I’ll have to think about that.”

President Trump then asked President Zelenskyy, who was meeting to discuss how to end the three-year war with Russia, for his reaction. Zelenskiy replied: “I’m not satisfied.”

The proposal was posted on social media on October 16 by Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special investment envoy and head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund RDIF. Dmitriev suggested an $8 billion tunnel running 110 miles under the ocean could be built to cross the Bering Strait, the narrowest point between the two continents.

Dmitriev said the tunnel would become a “symbol of unity” by providing rail and freight connections between the two countries. He posted President Trump’s comments on social media.

Dmitriev floated the proposal after Trump and Putin spoke for two hours about how to end Russia’s war with Ukraine. The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Budapest within two weeks at the earliest to further advance peace negotiations.

Dmitriev has forged a relationship with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy leading peace talks in the Middle East and Ukraine. Dmitriev suggested that former Trump adviser Elon Musk’s Boring Company could build the tunnel.

During the meeting, Trump repeatedly pointed out that Putin and Zelenskyy have a lot of “bad blood” and that they “hate each other.” President Trump embarrassed the Ukrainian leader by jokingly asking what he thought about the proposal.

“This is the tunnel that was revealed yesterday from Russia to Alaska,” Trump said. “What do you think about that, Mr. President? Do you have any ideas? How do you like those ideas?”

“I don’t think he liked it,” Trump said with a smile after Zelensky’s response.

Prince Andrew stripped of royal title over alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein

play

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that Prince Andrew would no longer use his royal title, three years after he was ousted as senior royal following allegations over his relationship with convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The former Duke of York continues to deny collaborating with the disgraced sex offender, but says he agrees that the controversy surrounding him is a distraction for the royal family.

In an October 17 statement shared by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said: “Following discussions with the King and my immediate family, I have come to the conclusion that continued accusations about me will interfere with the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. As always, I have chosen to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by the decision I made five years ago to distance myself from public life.”

He added that King Charles III’s “agreement made us feel that we must go a step further. Therefore, I will no longer use my title or the honors bestowed on me. As I have said before, I strongly deny the charges against me.”

Andrew’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth, stripped him of his patronage and military connections in 2022, making him a royal persona non grata. The decision came after he settled a sexual abuse lawsuit brought against him by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who died by suicide in Australia earlier this year.

Since then, he has appeared in public only at family events, including his parents’ funerals and most recently last month’s funeral for Britain’s Catherine, Duchess of Kent.

What are the charges against Prince Andrew?

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s second son found their royal relationship soured after Mr Giuffre claimed he had sexually trafficked Mr Andrew when they were teenagers. In 2015, she said Epstein forced her to have sex with Andrew three times around 2001.

In a 2019 interview with the BBC, she said Epstein introduced her to Andrew and his then-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell at a London nightclub, and that Giuffre was then forced to have sex with the royal at Maxwell’s home. Giuffre later claimed that Andrew sexually abused her a second time at Epstein’s New York mansion, and a third time on Epstein’s private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In February 2022, the sexual abuse lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed sum and a “significant donation” to Giuffre’s charity.

In the same year, Andrew told the same media: “I have no recollection of meeting this woman, I have no recollection of it at all.”

What is the relationship between Andrew and Epstein?

According to British media reports, Andrew and Epstein’s friendship spans decades, dating back to the 1990s.

Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 of trafficking minors for sex with Epstein and is currently serving a 20-year sentence, is said to have introduced the pair when she was Epstein’s girlfriend and employee at the time, the Guardian reported.

As the accusations came to light, Andrew expressed regret over his former friendship with Epstein.

“Prince Andrew regrets his association with Epstein and admires the courage of Ms. Giuffre and the other survivors who stood up for themselves and others,” one 2022 document filed in a federal court in New York said. “He has pledged to show his regret for his association with Epstein by helping fight the evil of sex trafficking and supporting its victims.”

If you frequent Panera Bread, you may soon see new drink options on the menu, but only in select cities.

The restaurant chain announced Oct. 15 that it is testing two new “premium specialty” beverage categories at select restaurants in three markets: Nashville, Mobile/Pensacola and Baltimore.

The drinks, called Fresca and Energy Refresher, are created by Panera baristas and feature “a premium drinking experience infused with real fruit and full of refreshing flavor,” according to a news release. The 12-week test will run from October 15th to January 6th at approximately 65 Panera stores.

Fresca will be a caffeine-free beverage option, while Energy Refresher will contain caffeine, Panera said in a news release.

Each drink has two flavor options:

  • Fresh cherry lime: A delightful blend of cherry and lime flavors infused with real dried tart cherries.
  • Fresh hibiscus pomegranate: A refreshing, naturally flavored, caffeine-free herbal tea with pomegranate juice infused with real dragon fruit.
  • Dragon Fruit Sunset Energy Refresher: A refreshing, caffeinated blend of pineapple and tropical dragonfruit flavors infused with real dragonfruit. They contain approximately 28 milligrams of caffeine in 20 fluid liters. 42 milligrams of caffeine in an ounce cup of ice, 30 fluid liters. A cup with an ounce of ice.
  • Passion Fruit Paradise Energy Refresher: A fruity, caffeinated blend of passion fruit, guava and orange flavors combined with fresh pineapple. They contain approximately 28 milligrams of caffeine in 20 fluid liters. 44 milligrams of caffeine in an ounce cup of ice, 30 fluid liters. A cup with an ounce of ice.

“The beverage industry is rapidly expanding, and more guests than ever are looking for flavorful, refreshing and innovative beverage options to visit our bakery cafes,” Panera Bread Chief Executive Officer Brooke Buchanan said in a news release.

Fresca and Energy Refresher will be available for dine-in, delivery, rapid pickup and drive-thru at participating testing locations, Panera said.

New beverage launches in wake of charged lemonade lawsuit

In May 2024, Panera removed its line of charged lemonade drinks from its menu after being hit with multiple lawsuits.

The company introduced a line of high-caffeine beverages in 2022. Two lawsuits, filed in October and December 2023, allege that the drinks’ caffeine content caused fatal cardiac arrest. A third lawsuit, filed in 2024, claims the drink causes permanent heart disease.

After the initial lawsuit, Panera changed the labeling of its Charged Lemonade products, saying in a statement that the company had “strengthened existing caffeine disclosures for these beverages” out of “an abundance of caution.”

In January 2024, Panera removed drinks from its self-serve fountains.

These drinks were previously reported to contain as much as 260 milligrams of caffeine in a regular-sized drink and 390 milligrams in a large-sized drink.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, most adults can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is roughly equivalent to four to five cups of freshly brewed coffee.

What are the “No Kings” protests and what are they calling for?

0

play

Every corner of the country, from the boulevards of Washington, D.C. to the quiet parks of Montana, is preparing to hear the same echoes this October 18th. “No Kings” and “Sin Reyes.” That motto will bring millions of people to the streets in more than 2,500 cities to celebrate the First Amendment and defend the right to protest, freedom of expression, and democracy itself.

The march is expected to be the largest in modern U.S. history and is a response to what many see as an authoritarian turn by President Donald Trump’s administration. “If you’re not afraid, you’re not paying attention,” warned Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, a grassroots movement of thousands of local organizations whose mission is to elect progressive leaders, rebuild democracy, and defeat Trump’s policies.

“This is about fundamental rights that are being eroded, and the people are saying enough is enough,” he argued.

What are the “No Kings” protests and what are they calling for?

“No Kings” was born as a mass movement that rejected all attempts to centralize power in the executive branch. The name “Kingless” represents the belief that the United States is not a monarchy and that power ultimately resides with the people.

The protests celebrate the spirit of the First Amendment: the right to assemble, speak freely, and question those who govern. But they are also an act of resistance to recent Trump administration policies, from increased raids on immigrants to attempts to limit public protests and deploy the military to Democratic-controlled cities. “These are not just laws we don’t like, they’re a real threat to our democracy,” Public Citizen co-chair Lisa Gilbert explained.

Where and how will the demo take place?

Protests will spread across the United States, with large rallies in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and in cities including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans and Boston. The small town will also host events where the entire community organizes marches, vigils and human chains.

Organizers like the ACLU, MoveOn, and Human Rights Campaign encourage citizens to: Create your own local event. “If you have to drive for more than an hour, we recommend building a car within your local area,” they suggest. This decentralized structure, they say, reflects the democratic spirit they champion. That means every voice matters and every protest matters.

Is it safe to protest? What you need to know before joining

In the face of Republican accusations that it will be a violent event dominated by “Antifa,” organizers insist “No Kings” will be a peaceful, inclusive and family-friendly space. All local organizers are trained in conflict de-escalation and community security.

“We want people to feel safe. This is a place that builds community, not a place that incites violence,” Gilbert said.

Previous protests, including the June 14 event, have taken place without incident and have been attended by families, students, workers, and religious groups. Demonstrators are encouraged to wear yellow as a symbol of unity and resistance.

What kind of political impact could “No Kings” have?

For many activists, October 18th will be more than just a day of protest, it will be a political turning point. With the government partially paralyzed by a federal government shutdown and heightened tensions in Congress, organizers hope mass mobilization will force elected leaders to take a stand.

“We say to Democrats: The cavalry will arrive on October 18th,” Levin warned. “If they fight this authoritarianism, they will be on the right side of history. If they give up, the people will look for new leaders.” Pressure, both on the streets and at the polling stations, will be key in the months leading up to the 2026 elections.

Looking to the future: Democracy as a collective challenge

October 18th will be more than just a protest, it will be a reminder of the collective power of citizens in times of uncertainty. In the words of Pastor Paul Rauschenbusch, “No Kings is not a space for chaos, but a joyous celebration of democracy.”

Hyundai expands EV charging capabilities. Other automakers should do the same.

0

Hyundai may have just solved one of the most vexing problems of EV ownership.

play

  • Hyundai Motor North America has announced new charging features for two models.
  • The MyHyundai with Bluelink app simplifies the charging process for drivers.
  • The new features could give Hyundai a significant competitive edge in the EV space.

Electric vehicle charging is one of the barriers to entry for EV ownership in America. Vehicles with electric powertrains may have come a long way over the past decade, but charging infrastructure still has a long way to go.

Automakers are embracing the fact that Tesla has one of the best charging networks in the country. Brands like Ford, GM, Rivian, Honda, and Hyundai have partnered with Tesla to give EV drivers access to Tesla Superchargers. Hyundai is taking things a step further by streamlining the charging experience in a way that few automakers have.

Hyundai changed the EV charging game, and why other brands should take note

Last spring, South Korean automaker Hyundai announced in a press release new charging features to ease the EV charging experience. “These new features not only simplify the charging process but also improve the overall ownership experience,” said Manish Mehrotra, vice president of digital business planning and connected operations for Hyundai Motor North America.

Hyundai drivers can find and pay for charging within the MyHyundai with Bluelink app. Until this new feature was introduced, drivers had to install and use separate apps for different charging systems. Drivers can now find, navigate, select and activate charging stations from the app, according to a press release. This simplifies the process of finding available chargers and paying for your charging session.

Hyundai’s new features are available on 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 models and 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 models. Compatible charging networks include IONNA, Tesla Supercharger, ChargePoint, and EVgo, which are some of the major players in the EV charging space.

Hyundai is also introducing a new plug-and-charge feature. This feature allows drivers to pay by simply connecting their vehicle to a participating station, completely eliminating the need for physical credit cards or smartphone payment processing. EVs have gotten smarter over the years, and with this feature, chargers are getting smarter as well.

Why is public EV charging so difficult?

Charging an electric vehicle in America can be a harrowing task due to the lack of capable and reliable charging stations in many areas of the country. To make matters worse, many public charging stations lack the wattage for fast charging, leaving drivers waiting hours to refill their bulk batteries.

While some networks, like the Tesla Supercharger network, offer a more premium experience, there is still a lot of room for improvement in charging infrastructure. Hyundai’s latest charging features allow drivers to make the most of public charging systems, providing easy access to multiple networks through the app and simplifying the payment process.

The future of electric vehicle charging

Demand for EV charging is expected to increase as more automakers produce competitive electric vehicles. The future of EV charging is uncertain, but one thing is certain: America needs faster, more reliable charging stations to support the growing number of EV drivers. Meanwhile, countries like China are making great strides in charging technology innovation.

Charging America’s electric vehicles is a collaborative effort between the world’s largest auto companies and their subsidiaries. If automakers really want to provide EV owners with a positive charging experience, they should consider partnerships and features like Hyundai.

The Korean automaker produces multiple competitive EVs across its brand portfolio (Hyundai, Kia, Genesis), and some nameplates are becoming increasingly popular. Models like Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6 could even rival Tesla in terms of sales in the coming years.

Rachael Ray returns to daytime TV with Drew Barrymore

Rachael Ray is making a rare return to daytime television.

The former Food Network staple will appear on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on Friday, Oct. 17, to cook and share recipes with Barrymore, according to the show’s website.

Ray, 57, rose to fame with her 30-minute recipes, which have welcomed viewers into her kitchen for more than a decade, making MasterChef dishes look “quick and easy”. But in recent years, her eponymous show has evolved, ending its long-running syndication and moving under a new production company co-owned by Ray. Her newest show, “Meals in Minutes,” is now on FYI.

Her appearance on “Barrymore” will put her at the center of the format that made her famous, following concerns from fans last year over clips in which she appeared slurred. The segment will air ahead of Ray’s co-hosted performance later Friday at the New York Wine & Food Festival, where he will co-host Blue Moon Burger Bash 2.0 with Brooklyn Beckham.

In an interview with Us Weekly ahead of the festival, Rae told the magazine that while she’s happy to spend time in the Big Apple, she much prefers living in Italy.

“When I have work, I come to New York or upstate New York,” said Ray, whose New York home was destroyed in a fire in 2020. “I prefer Italy. It’s quieter. The dogs are much happier. I hate New York City.” The following year, the Food Network star’s New York apartment was flooded by Hurricane Ida.

“I spend as much time as I can (in Italy),” she said. “Everything is very quiet, the air is very fresh, there are huge gardens and vineyards and olive trees. I really like that life.”

While her life in Italy may sound luxurious, at least her cooking style is no-frills.

“I don’t think you should take food of any kind too seriously. So enjoy it,” she told Us Weekly of her philosophy. “Have a sense of humor. I don’t think there should be any rules, especially when it comes to fun food or food eaten with your hands.”

“You should take seriously the evaluation of your life and work, but you should never take yourself too seriously,” she continued. “Food shouldn’t be taken seriously.”

The temperature of U.S. political rhetoric further rose this week after President Donald Trump’s chief spokesperson slandered Democrats for supporting terrorism, illegal immigration and violent crime.

“This interview proves that the Democratic Party’s primary constituency is made up of Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals,” White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt told Fox News on October 16.

Mr. Levitt was responding to questions about the network’s one-on-one conversation with Zoran Mamdani, the democratic socialist New York mayoral candidate who is favored to win the November election. Mamdani gave a deflected answer when asked whether Hamas should lay down its weapons as part of President Trump’s Middle East ceasefire agreement.

Mr. Levitt continued that Mr. Trump and the Republican Party are “standing up for law-abiding Americans.”

Leavitt’s comments condemned as ‘dangerous’

The comments were slammed by critics, who called the characterization threatening and said the administration was portraying opponents as dangerous ahead of this weekend’s “No Kings” protests, which are expected to draw many progressive groups and anti-Trump protesters.

“This is so dangerous that all Republicans are nodding along,” Dan Pfeiffer, co-host of the podcast “Pod Save America” and former communications director for President Barack Obama, said in an Oct. 16 post on X.

Rep. Greg Cassar, D-Texas, echoed X after saying that Levitt should resign, saying the Trump administration is “trying to make us hate each other to distract from the fact that it’s blinding us all. It’s horrible.”

“Most Republicans are good people. Most Democrats are good people,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a 2024 vice presidential candidate, said in an Oct. 15 post on the X show. “The White House is saying outrageous things to make you hate your neighbors. Your neighbors aren’t the problem. The White House is the problem.”

The clash over Mr. Levitt’s comments is the latest in a series of exchanges of concerns that sharp words can incite political violence. The incident comes just a month after Republicans criticized the rhetoric of Democrats and their allies in the wake of the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk, and about a week after Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones came under fire for an alarming text message that made fun of the shooting of the state’s Republican leader.

“Let me be clear: I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed. And I’m sorry,” Jones said of the text during an Oct. 16 debate at the University of Richmond.

Republicans call weekend protests ‘Hate America’ rallies

The White House press secretary’s words also come at a time when Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the country’s ability to solve major problems and leaders across the aisle.

For example, a New York Times/Siena College poll released this week found that 64% of registered voters (including 68% of independents) think the country is too politically divided to solve its problems. This number is much higher than the same survey five years ago, when 42% of voters said the U.S. is too divided to solve problems amid a global pandemic and marches for racial justice.

The bitterness over the nation’s institutions and divisive debate is likely to intensify this weekend, as thousands of communities large and small in the United States prepare for a deluge of “No King” protests and marches.

For example, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said the event was orchestrated by a group of anti-American activists who despise the country.

“We’re calling it the ‘Hate America’ rally, and we’ll be holding it on Saturday. Let’s see who joins it,” he said. “You’re probably seeing pro-Hamas supporters. You’re probably seeing people like Antifa. You’re probably seeing Marxists in full force. People who don’t want to stand up and defend the fundamental truths of this republic.”

Other Republicans, such as Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), described groups organizing the event, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood, as people who “cheer for chaos, not the country.”

But protest organizers say they are feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness and are unwilling to back down.

They are positioning the weekend as a celebration of free speech and the right to assembly. They are also using it to shine a spotlight on the president’s policies, particularly regarding the deployment of the National Guard to U.S. cities, which have net negative approval ratings for President Trump.

For example, in the Times-Siena poll, 48% of registered voters, including 54% of independents, said President Trump is “bad for democracy,” compared to 33% who said the president is “good for democracy.”

Porsche looks to former McLaren CEO to lead rebuilding

Porsche P911_p.DE on Friday appointed former McLaren boss Michael Reiters as its new CEO, in a bid to revive the German luxury sports car maker’s fortunes and end the sideline of Oliver Blume, who had been at odds with some investors.

Blume, who took the wheel of Porsche 10 years ago, has also run parent company Volkswagen VOWG_p.DE for the past three years, during which time both companies have struggled.

“Negotiations with Dr. Reiters will begin,” Porsche said in a statement, adding that key supervisory board members had approved negotiations regarding the end of Mr. Blume’s term.

Investor: “The company is listening to criticism”

Porsche is looking to hire a new CEO to improve its performance as it faces global tariffs, declining demand in China and a costly shift back from electricity to internal combustion engines.

Just three years ago, Porsche’s market value was the second highest in German history, making the carmaker the most valuable in Europe at a value of 83 billion euros ($97 billion).

Once a cash cow for Volkswagen, Porsche’s profit margins have fallen, its stock price has more than halved and it fell out of the blue-chip DAX index last month. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s stock price has fallen by more than a third.

Porsche shareholder DWS welcomed the apparent early end of Blume’s dual role as an important signal to the market.

“This shows that the repeated criticisms are finally being heard,” said Hendrik Schmidt, head of stewardship and governance at DWS, which owns about $34 million in Porsche stock.

“However, it is clear that even with new leadership, old challenges will have to be tackled. Porsche must pursue an e-mobility path in the future and also improve its sales situation in China,” Schmidt added.

Porsche shares rose 1.2% after Porsche named Mr. Reiters as a candidate to succeed Mr. Blume. Volkswagen shares, which did not respond to requests for comment, rose 1.7%.

Reiters, a well-known figure in the sports car world who has held positions at McLaren, Porsche and Ferrari RACE.MI, could be appointed as Porsche’s CEO as early as Friday, and could take up the role in 2026, German magazine Wirschaftswoche reported.

Leiters left McLaren in April following its merger with EV startup FourSeven, and was chief technology officer at Italian luxury car maker Ferrari from 2014 to 2019.

Prior to that, he joined Porsche where he spent 13 years as SUV Director, contributing to the development of the successful Cayenne model.

“His background seems to fit well with Porsche’s sports car and SUV DNA,” Metzeler analyst Pal Scarta said.

Porsche, Volkswagen struggle in China

Porsche’s fortunes reflect a broader downturn in Germany’s once-dominant auto industry and the broader German economy, which has struggled to grow and battled high costs, tariffs and fierce foreign competition.

Porsche is making a particular effort in China, where Blume recently announced a costly shift in strategy away from EVs and back to the internal combustion engine models that made it famous.

Porsche’s sales in China have fallen by nearly a third since setting a record of 95,671 units in 2021.

Sales in China in the first three quarters of this year were down 26% compared to the same period in 2024, accounting for just 15% of the total, as consumers rejected Porsche’s electric cars in favor of futuristic sporty alternatives from China.

Volkswagen is also struggling in China, with sales dropping from about 3.7 million units in 2020 to 2.8 million units in 2024.

Volkswagen was China’s number one automaker for many years, but it was overtaken by BYD in 2024. At the current growth rate, China’s Geely Automobile is likely to overtake Volkswagen in third place in 2025.

“This step was too late and a lot of time was wasted,” said Ingo Speich of Deka Investment, a German investment trust that owns about $48 million in Porsche stock.

“Mr. Blume must restore the confidence of the capital markets. He must press ahead with the restructuring and achieve the announced model and goals,” Speich added.

Blume, who is seen as close to the Porsche/Piech dynasty that controls Volkswagen through the Porsche SE holding company, told Germany’s OMR Business podcast last month that he works about 70 hours a week managing both Porsche and Volkswagen.
