OpenAI spreads $600 billion bet on cloud AI across AWS, Oracle, and Microsoft

0

OpenAI has signed a new agreement with AWS as part of its multi-cloud strategy and is spending heavily to secure its AI computing supply chain.

The company recently ended its exclusive cloud computing partnership with Microsoft. Since then, the company has reportedly allocated $250 billion to Microsoft, $300 billion to Oracle, and now $38 billion to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in new multi-year agreements. The $38 billion deal with AWS is the smallest of the three deals, but is part of OpenAI’s diversification plan.

For industry leaders, OpenAI’s actions demonstrate that access to high-performance GPUs is no longer an on-demand commodity. It is now a scarce resource that requires huge long-term investments.

The AWS agreement provides OpenAI with access to hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs, including the new GB200 and GB300, and the ability to leverage tens of millions of CPUs.

This powerful infrastructure isn’t just for training tomorrow’s models. This is required to run ChatGPT’s large-scale inference workloads today. “Scaling frontier AI requires reliable computing at scale,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.

This surge in spending is forcing hyperscalers to respond competitively. While AWS remains the industry’s largest cloud provider, Microsoft and Google have recently recorded rapid growth in cloud revenue, often by acquiring new AI customers. This agreement with AWS is simply an attempt to secure the underlying AI workloads and prove AI capabilities at scale, including running clusters of over 500,000 chips.

AWS doesn’t just provide standard servers. We are building a sophisticated architecture specifically for OpenAI that uses EC2 UltraServers to link GPUs and provide the low-latency networking needed for training at scale.

“The breadth and immediate availability of optimized compute shows why AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s massive AI workloads,” said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS.

But “immediate” is relative. The full capacity of OpenAI’s latest cloud AI contract will be fully deployed by the end of 2026, with options for further expansion through 2027. This timeline provides some reality for executives planning the deployment of AI. Hardware supply chains are complex and operate on multi-year timelines.

So what should corporate leaders take away from this?

First, the “build or buy” AI infrastructure debate is largely over. OpenAI spends hundreds of billions of dollars building on top of rented hardware. Few, if any, other companies can or should follow suit. This will firmly shift the rest of the market to managed platforms like Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and IBM watsonx, with hyperscalers absorbing this infrastructure risk.

Second, the days of being able to source AI workloads in a single cloud may be over. OpenAI’s shift to a multi-provider model is a textbook case for mitigating concentration risk. For CIOs, relying on a single vendor for computing to run core business processes is becoming a gamble.

Finally, AI budgeting has left the realm of departmental IT and entered the world of corporate capital planning. These are no longer variable operating expenses. Securing AI computing is a long-term financial commitment, like building a new factory or data center.

Social Security changes in 2026 could mean more money

0

Many older Americans stand to benefit.

Millions of older Americans currently rely on Social Security for their monthly income. And even if you retire with a significant amount of retirement benefits saved up, you may still be heavily dependent on those benefits to make ends meet after you quit your job.

Although Social Security has been around for a long time, the program tends to change every year, which can have a positive impact on beneficiaries. Here are two positive Social Security changes coming in 2026 that could bring you more money.

1. 2.8% cost of living adjustment

Inflation tends to increase the cost of living over time. But there are many people who have been collecting Social Security for decades. Unless benefits are adjusted for inflation, seniors will certainly lose purchasing power.

Thankfully, Social Security benefits are subject to an automatic cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) each year, indexed to inflation. In 2025, Social Security benefits increased by 2.5%. However, COLA in 2026 will be a little higher. It is 2.8%.

Let’s be clear: a 2.8% COLA is by no means the largest Social Security increase ever achieved. But historically, it’s not a bad conflict. For context, there was a year in which my Social Security benefits did not qualify for any COLA.

More importantly, the 2.8% COLA indicates that while inflation remains a major problem, it is less prevalent than it was immediately after the pandemic. Put another way, if the Social Security COLA in 2026 had been higher, you would have sacrificed higher costs. So a COLA of 2.8% is actually quite satisfactory.

2. Increased revenue test cap

Continuing to work after retirement has benefits beyond extra pay. Work can serve as a social outlet and give people a reason to get out of the house.

But the reality is that many people who choose to work after retirement do so because they need extra money. And in 2026, seniors on Social Security will have more flexibility in earning income while still receiving benefits.

If you are working while receiving Social Security benefits before reaching full retirement age, you are subject to means-tested limitations. If you exceed that limit, a portion of your Social Security benefits will be garnished.

In 2026, the Social Security earnings test limit for people under full retirement age for any given year will increase from $23,400 to $24,480. If you fall into this category, your Social Security deduction will be $1 for every $2 you earn over $24,480.

If you reach full retirement age in 2026, the income-tested limit is even higher, from $62,160 to $65,160. And beyond that, Social Security is deducted at the rate of $1 for every $3 of income.

Higher means-tested limits mean you can keep more of your Social Security benefits if you work and earn a decent wage. This is also a positive change.

However, keep in mind that the Social Security benefits that are deducted through the means test are not money you can part with forever. Once you reach full retirement age, that money will be added to your monthly check.

Sometimes change is good

When people hear the word “change,” they can prepare themselves for disappointment. In this case, these two changes that Social Security is implementing in the new year could improve many people’s finances.

Whether you’re already collecting benefits or not, it’s important to read up on how Social Security will change in 2026. There may be other hidden updates that you should be aware of, so it’s helpful to stay informed.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky pop up at CFDA Awards 2025

play

NEW YORK — The CFDA Fashion Awards were full of surprises.

The surprises included a surprise appearance from Rihanna and an appearance by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday night.

While the first Monday in May is designated for the star-studded Met Gala, the first Monday in November this year was dedicated to the Oscars of fashion, hosted by Amazon. The Council of Fashion Designers of America’s annual event, highlighting the best of American fashion, was held for the third time on November 3 under the museum’s giant life-size blue whale.

Rihanna, 37, was on hand to support her partner and the night’s Fashion Icon honoree, A$AP Rocky, making her red carpet debut less than two months after giving birth to their third child, named Rocky.

When introducing rapper Rocky, 37-year-old Vogue magazine’s Anna Wintour playfully teased that Rocky’s daughter shares the same name.

“Telling Rocky he’s a fashion icon is like telling Carlos Alcaraz he’s a good backhander. There’s no indication that he’s a guy who needs to be told,” Winter said, drawing laughter from the audience. “A few years ago, when a member of the Vogue team asked who his biggest beauty influence was, Rocky’s answer was himself. When he brilliantly co-chaired the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ earlier this year, he cited himself as a source of inspiration for the exhibition. The CFDA just made it official. So, yes, Rocky is the guy to turn to when you want to boost your confidence.”

“He’s here with us tonight, less than two months after the birth of his third child, who is named Rocky,” she continued. “Yes, he is a muse in that respect as well.”

Rihanna and Rocky walked the white carpet together, with Lee rocking an Alaia outfit that included a black trench coat and white pleated slacks. Rocky wore a Chanel suit over a yellow sweater and cap-toe dress shoes.

“On a serious note, I just want to say that I am truly honored to receive this award. Yes, I agree. I am an icon. But I would be nothing without my friends and so many of you in the room,” Rocky said in his acceptance speech.

“Baby, baby, I love you,” he told Rihanna, who received the same honor in 2014. “You won this award a long time ago. Remember what I said, ‘You inspired me. I want to win it one day…all the awards one day.'” Remember? We did it, baby.”

The guest list is star-studded and eclectic. Kimora Lee Simmons, Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Ciara, Addison Rae, Saweetie, Renee Rupp, Mandy Moore, Stefon Diggs, Tyrik Withers, Britt Lower, and Angel Reese, to name a few.

There was Lily Allen, wearing a revenge dress and exposing her entire body (after her split with David Harbor). Love Island USA star Hollandria Carsen wears a curve-hugging brown strapless dress. and worn by Amber Valletta of Versace dress. And up-and-coming songstress Olivia Dean sang her song “So Easy (To Fall In Love)” with a sweet, crisp delivery.

A group of pot pie-wielding waiters weaved their way through the fashion crowd as top designers mingled with singers, athletes sat alongside pattern makers, milliners mingled with actors and reality stars.

Teyana Taylor served as host for the night, performing a variety of Thom Browne ensembles, releasing new music, and revealing that in addition to starring in the drama series “All’s Fair” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s film “One Battle After Another,” she is currently raising two children and attending culinary school.

She also scouted the room for the ensemble for the important occasion of jury duty. “In fact, I might have to call my brother A$AP Rocky in Harlem, because I know he knows something about this nasty case in court,” Taylor said.

Olsen Twins Give Rare Speech to Accept CFDA Award on ‘The Row’

The Olsen twins made a rare public speech to accept the Accessories Designer of the Year award. The 39-year-old sisters have won the award multiple times in recent years for their luxury brand The Row.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen were on hand to receive the honor chosen by CFDA voting members. “From the bottom of my heart, we would like to thank our amazing customers for giving us the opportunity to do what we love,” said Ashley Olsen, who delivered her full speech while her sister Mary-Kate stood by her side.

Their names also came up in a speech by Sarah Moonves, W Magazine’s top editor and daughter of former CBS CEO Les Moonves, who won the Media Award (presented to her by friend and actress Jennifer Lawrence).

Moonves called the sisters “my best friends,” adding, “A little known fact is that I was on four episodes of ‘Full House,’ so my career could have gone in a completely different direction. It’s very rare to be able to say this about someone, but I can tell you that the three of us were lifelong friends.”

Amber Valletta honors Donatella Versace with JLo Versace dress

Ariana DeBose and Valletta introduced Donatella Versace, winner of the Positive Change Award.

Valletta wore the iconic deep neckline tropical print dress that Jennifer Lopez made infamous at the 2000 Grammys (and helped start Google Images). Valletta originally modeled the bold dress on the 1999 runway for Versace’s Spring/Summer 2000 show.

“She is the kind of attention-grabbing woman who creates moments and lives forever on red carpets, on magazine covers, on social media and, of course, in the history of pop culture,” DeBose said of Versace.

Versace emphasized the importance of creativity. “Great creativity comes from diversity. It has no color, no gender, no sexual orientation,” she said. “Business should never kill creativity.”

Ralph Lauren named among CFDA award winners

In his opening speech, CFDA President Tom Brown praised Diane Keaton and gave a nod to the upcoming New York City mayoral election. He presented the first award of the night to Ralph Rucci, who received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Michael Kors immediately rose to his feet and led an enthusiastic standing ovation for Lucci.

Ralph Lauren won the award at the age of 86, 30 years after winning in 1995.

Naomi Campbell gave a moving speech to Alaïa’s Peter Moulier, who was named International Designer of the Year. Campbell, who was the muse of Murier’s predecessor Azzedine Alaia, said: “Can anyone truly honor Azzedine’s extraordinary achievements?…Fortunately, Peter answered that call not with words, but with work and respect.”

Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo won the Innovation Award sponsored by Amazon Fashion and was introduced by award-winning director Ava DuVernay.

Julianne Moore presented her eponymous brand’s Founder’s Award to her friend, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. “I feel so lucky every day that my job is to come up with an idea and make it happen,” Laurie said.

Andre Walker was honored by the board of directors in honor of the late Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo.

What is the best way to leave an inheritance to your children? Here’s what you need to know

0

play

Americans work hard throughout their lives to buy a home, a small part of the American Dream, but many don’t spend enough time planning to properly pass it on to their heirs, leading to disputes and even loss of wealth, experts said.

According to Federal Reserve data, the silent generation and baby boomers own about $25 trillion in real estate. This represents a large portion of the $105 trillion in total assets that researchers Cerulli Associates estimates will be transferred by 2048, but experts say it will be among the most difficult assets to transfer.

Estates can come with a lot of baggage and if they have to be disposed of before death there is a risk of families being torn apart and assets being lost, advisers said.

Jackie Garrod, Regional Wealth Manager at Northern Trust, said: “Home holds so many memories and parents want to pass that on to their children and continue to make memories there.” “It’s a big decision because it’s near and dear to the children’s hearts, but parents need to talk about it with their children. We want parents to think it through because their children may have concerns.”

What kind of problems may arise when inheriting real estate?

Some real estate issues, especially when bequeathing real estate to multiple children, include:

  • Maintenance – Who will handle repairs, painting, and upgrades?
  • Usage – Who can use the home and when?
  • Structure – Who are the decision-makers, or how is the final decision made if there is disagreement?
  • Expenses – How will maintenance, property taxes, insurance, electricity, gas, etc. be paid for?
  • Exit Strategy – What if your child is not interested in the property, can’t afford to pay for it, lives far away and can’t use it, doesn’t want to pay for it, or wants to move out after a few years?

Without a clear blueprint, it can turn into an anxiety-filled nightmare for parents who want their children to continue creating and sharing good memories with their children, said Mark Persemer, chief wealth strategist and Florida regional director at wealth management firm Glenmede.

According to a survey of 2,000 Americans conducted in August by online legal consulting service LegalZoom, about 62% of older adults plan to leave real estate to their children, while 42% of younger Americans said they would not be financially prepared to keep and maintain real estate if they received it now. Property taxes and maintenance costs topped the list of concerns, at 20% each. Twelve percent of young Americans were concerned about existing debt related to real estate, and 11% were concerned about the legal complexities of owning real estate.

What should parents do with their property?

Experts say homeownership is an important way to build wealth, but the easiest thing for parents to do is to sell real estate and replace it with liquid assets like cash or brokerage accounts. Experts say they are easily valued, divisible and do not necessarily require ongoing maintenance, expense or contact with other heirs.

“But some people are stubborn,” Parthemer said.

Experts say that if you are determined to pass on your wealth, proper planning is essential, starting with discussions with your heirs.

“Parents should do some fact-finding and put together a user agreement that lets (heirs) know how to maintain or use it, how to pay for it, who will maintain it or take turns managing it and receive a salary,” Garrod said.

These intergenerational conversations are “the biggest advantage in ensuring continued success,” Palthemer said. “It’s about educating the next generation about what the plan is, how it’s structured, and why the shirt sleeves have remained the same for three generations.”

Parents can then consider various ways to pass on the estate, including using a trust, limited liability company (LLC), or both, experts say.. These can help families avoid probate, which can be time-consuming, expensive, public, and potentially difficult. They may also offer protection and tax benefits, experts say.

Why put your assets in an LLC?

LLCs offer liability protection, Garrod said. If someone falls on your property, your personal assets will be protected from lawsuits and the like.

Although an operating agreement is not required, experts recommend one that outlines the property’s management and accounting, compensation, usage, ownership, and how shares will be transferred if someone wants to leave. If the property produces income, the contract should also detail how it will be distributed.

Setting up an LLC as a trust can provide additional personal protection, similar to that in a divorce case, Garrod said. Ownership of an LLC is considered part of your estate and can be disputed, but a trust can remove ownership.

Why put property in a trust?

A trust, whether irrevocable or revocable, can protect property in the event of a lawsuit.

  • Irrevocable trust: A trust rather than an individual owns the property. Relinquishing control of an estate means that nothing can be changed, but the estate is protected in litigation and may reduce inheritance taxes.
  • Revocable trust: Real estate is not fully protected because individuals manage the estate and the real estate remains within the estate. However, when that person dies, there is no one who can change the trust, so the trust becomes irrevocable and the assets are protected for the benefit of his or her heirs.

What today’s election says about MAGA and the future of the Democratic Party

0

The Nov. 4 campaign represents the clearest political judgment yet about Trump’s power, the fate of MAGA, and both parties’ signals for future elections.

play

President Donald Trump’s huge second-term agenda, which has swept the nation, will undergo its first major referendum as millions of voters flock to polling stations for one of the few crucial off-year elections.

Locked out of power in Washington since January, Democrats and their allies have scrambled to organize opposition in a variety of ways, including marathon speeches in Congress, filing lawsuits against controversial administration moves and filling the streets with mass protests.

But the Nov. 4 campaign marks the clearest political judgment yet on Mr. Trump’s growing control and will lay the groundwork for his Make America Great Again campaign, next year’s midterm elections, and the not-so-distant 2028 presidential election.

In every election, including the two gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, and the dramatic sprint in New York’s mayoral race. Or California’s bold entry into a redistricting arms race, a rallying cry for President Trump that often excites his supporters and alarms his opponents.

These elections will also be used as a gauge of the direction and success of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party has two candidates, Abigail Spanberger of Virginia and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, who were instrumental in the party’s success against Trump in the midterm elections of his first term in 2018.

“What’s interesting about both is that they really represent the first pieces of political resistance against Donald Trump,” says Matthew Dallek, a historian and professor of political management at George Washington University.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the two candidates coming out of the Trump 1.0 resistance movement are the favorites to win this very important off-year gubernatorial race,” he added. “This suggests that a type of patriotic, national security-focused, tough-on-law-and-order mold still resonates within the Democratic Party, and it may also resonate among ordinary voters.”

But as part of the Democratic Party’s year-long rebranding, the radical, progressive populism embodied by New York Congressman Zoran Mamdani is on the rise. He is a socialist candidate who has won the support of mainstream Democrats and awakened the political left to take control of America’s largest city.

The implications for Republicans and Democrats will play out in these outcomes as the president tests the limits of executive power and takes a sometimes literal bulldozing approach to changing Washington and the country.

MAGA turmoil will undermine Democrats’ 2026 hopes

Political forecasters and pollsters have given Democrats an edge in nearly every race, and a landslide victory in those races would paint a more liberal picture heading into next year with Americans increasingly dissatisfied with President Trump’s harsh actions.

But MAGA activists and other conservative leaders believe Republicans can stop this rhetoric from taking root in 2026, when Democrats aim to take back the House.

“If Democrats don’t win New Jersey and Virginia by big margins, their momentum will slow down,” John Fredericks, a conservative radio host in Virginia and a Trump ally, told USA TODAY.

Republicans have their highest hopes for New Jersey. In New Jersey, Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli has fully embraced Trump and MAGA’s presence in this campaign, after rejecting Trump, who narrowly lost his last run for governor in 2021.

Trump has had little involvement in the 2025 campaign, but Ciatelli told the USA TODAY Network that he speaks regularly with the president and stressed that any interaction with the commander-in-chief must be handled carefully.

Conservative commentators say liberals should coast to victory in these two states, given Trump’s loss in last year’s presidential election.

If Ciatarelli wins, the 63-year-old former congressman will become a MAGA star and be credited with strong-arming the Democratic Party.

But most forecasters don’t think the vote will result in Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears swaying Virginia’s Spanberger, and conservatives in the Old Dominion state are more likely to talk about other Republicans, such as lieutenant gubernatorial candidate John Reed, who has garnered attention for his MAGA rankings.

For example, in the final weeks of the Virginia attorney general race, Republicans spent more money supporting Republican candidate Jason Miyares than they did in the gubernatorial race.

But a Democratic victory in New Jersey would raise questions about the stability of the coalition without Trump in power. This may explain why some allies, like former White House chief of staff Steve Bannon, have pushed for an unconstitutional third term, and why the president has toyed with it at times and downplayed it at others.

The future of Trumpism will be as much a part of the national debate in 2026 for Republicans as it is for Democrats.

On the Republican side, cracks are emerging in the MAGA movement, whether due to right-wing grievances over U.S.-Israel relations or not. Complain about the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex trafficking case. Or, as the federal government continues to shut down, there are growing fears that millions of people will lose food benefits or face higher health insurance premiums.

But Federix said a strong showing by Republicans in any of these off-year races would give the president and his allies more enthusiasm and reverse concerns among Republican voters who worry that if Democrats regain control of either chamber of Congress, the remaining two years of President Trump’s term will be dragged out.

“The national narrative starts from, ‘Oh, Trump is done, they’re going to impeach him,’ and then you lose 25 seats, and then you go, ‘That’s crap, here are two states that aren’t red, but they really seem to like what the president is doing,’ and maybe they’ll win back some seats,” he said.

Democratic campaign offers different paths to recovery

Democrats are coming up with their own puzzle, even more compelling and complex, for next year, as Nov. 4’s results help show how the party thinks it can outperform MAGA as President Trump’s powers expand.

In one lane is Mamdani, a 34-year-old member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Online fluency and a pledge to attack rising prices for ordinary New Yorkers has awakened a new generation of progressives ready for their own populist movement.

The gains are in sharp contrast to races in Virginia and New Jersey, where Democrats fielded less popular but more predictable candidates in Spanberger and Sherrill.

The two former Capitol Hill roommates both have backgrounds in national security, which also gives them a platform to talk about the affordability crisis. But their message avoids harsh class attacks on billionaires and is aimed at winning over unstable voters rather than winning over new supporters with progressive leanings.

Sherrill initially praised Mamdani’s focus on raising cost and government efficiency standards, for example. But the 53-year-old Democratic congressman, who currently represents the New Jersey suburbs west of New York, withdrew in the final stages of the gubernatorial race after a series of Republican attacks, telling reporters after his Oct. 9 debate with Ciatelli that he would “not be involved” in the New York mayoral race.

How Democratic candidates and incumbents responded to Mamdani was a source of conflict during his campaign.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York ultimately endorsed Mamdani after weeks of questions and demands from liberal voters. Comedian Jon Stewart mocked Jeffries’ lateness in an October interview, calling it a “brave and courageous endorsement” by the Democratic establishment.

“We’re living in an outsider moment,” Adam Green, co-founder of the influential Progressive Change Campaign Committee, told USA TODAY. “Politics today is not about left versus right. More precisely, it’s about outsider anger versus insiders.”

Progressives running for office after 2026 are focusing on the possibility that Mamdani will win with more than 50% of the vote, but that Sherrill will lose. If that happens, we expect the left to take bolder positions on populist values, such as challenging the role billionaires play in politics and the economy.

If Mr. Sherrill prevails (though polls show New Jersey to be a close race), it will give rise to a growing chorus of moderates who argue that the party will have to fight for ideologically disaligned voters outside of urban centers like New York City in next year’s midterm elections and beyond.

An Oct. 29 Quinnipiac University poll found that Mamdani holds a 10% lead in the overall race against Cuomo and a commanding 28% lead among Democratic voters. However, among independents, the two were tied at 34%.

California enters redistricting war as horse racing begins in 2028

Beyond the candidate-versus-candidate race, California’s entry into the redistricting battle has far-reaching implications going forward.

Voters in the Golden State will decide on a Nov. 4 ballot measure known as Prop. 50 that would allow lawmakers to redraw the boundaries of the 52-member House seat instead of a bipartisan commission. Democrats want to create five new seats from California that would be advantageous to them.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is spearheading the fight, making it a national test of his political prowess and set up as a bold challenge to Trump and his allies, who are pressuring several Republican-controlled states to redraw their maps to maintain their legislative majorities.

Recent polls have Prop. 50 in the lead heading into Election Day, but political experts say California’s governor will win big or risk losing his luster as he navigates a shadowy 2028 presidential primary with currently no clear favorite.

Other White House candidates have already made their own moves in the fall election, which could help set up a possible 2028 presidential run.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, also from California, did not rule out the possibility of running for the White House again during her book tour, but she, like President Trump, is out of the 2025 campaign as the Democratic Party is still digesting last year’s defeat.

Others, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D.N.Y.) and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, are taking on more prominent roles and raising their profile. Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Mamdani in the New York mayoral race, and Beshear, who heads the Democratic Governors Association in 2026, has given Spanberger a say in Virginia.

Then there’s Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is rumored to be one of the top candidates for re-election in 2026. Polls show he has a 60% approval rating in the state, and he is banking on that popularity in November’s state Supreme Court election, and the national Democratic Party is working hard to protect Pennsylvania’s 5-2 liberal majority.

Voters in the Keystone State will decide on November 4 whether to extend the terms of three Democratic-leaning judges in a race that Mr. Shapiro proposed as a “threat to liberty” referendum.

“They have proven that we can rely on them to protect women’s access to abortion and contraception and protect all of our freedoms,” Shapiro said in a 30-second spot supporting the justices.

Jonathan Bailey named People Magazine’s 2025 Sexiest Man Alive

0

Wicked’s Jonathan Bailey has been named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, making him the first openly gay man to do so.

After winning the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and receiving an Emmy nomination last year, the “Bridgerton” fanatic is now being praised for his undeniable charm. Jimmy Fallon had the honor of revealing the title during Monday, Nov. 3’s episode of “The Tonight Show.”

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime honor,” the 37-year-old said. “Jimmy, I just want to say thank you so much for saying no to come here.”

Bailey revealed that he received the phone call earlier this year while he was playing the lead role in Richard II at London’s Bridge Theatre. He said, “You’re a little crazy. The only thing crazier than doing ‘Richard II’ was being invited to do this production.”

He also joked that when he told his friends about it, they said, “Yeah, do affirmations.”

“The Office” alum John Krasinski retained the title of 2024’s Sexiest Man Alive. Now, the ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ star will join recent sexy winners including ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alum Patrick Dempsey (2023), ‘Captain America’ actor Chris Evans (2022) and ‘The Sinners’ star Michael B. Jordan (2020).

This year marks another special year as Bailey was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, marking 40 years since the magazine has proclaimed this honor since 1985. At the time, Oscar winner Mel Gibson was the first recipient of the award. Since then, the outlet has spotlighted a male star every year, with the exception of 1993, when Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford were named Sexiest Couple.

Who was named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive last year?

Krasinski was named People magazine’s 2024 Sexiest Man Alive.

‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ made the big reveal, during which the 46-year-old ‘A Quiet Place’ director spoke about his wife Emily Blunt’s reaction to the news.

“There was so much laughter on the other end of the phone that it was hard to make out the words,” Krasinski said.

Who are the past winners of People magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive?

Chicago woman detained by immigration officials

0

Dayanne Figueroa was in a car accident on her way to work, which resulted in a federal agent pushing her to the ground, according to the video. Figueroa is a U.S. citizen.

play

CHICAGO – A woman’s car accident on her way to work led to an ordeal in which masked federal agents with weapons pulled her from her car and detained her without telling them why, her family said.

Video of masked men restraining U.S. citizen and paralegal Dayanne Figueroa after a traffic accident in Chicago is the latest footage of federal agents patrolling the city, which has faced increased scrutiny over aggressive tactics.

Figueroa’s account of the incident comes as the Supreme Court considers whether to allow President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard to the city. The White House has said an insurrection may be underway in the Prairie states and that troops are needed to help carry out President Trump’s immigration crackdown, known as Operation Midway Blitz.

Local Democratic leaders view the Republican president’s efforts to deploy troops as a power grab. Many Chicagoans and surrounding area residents view the federal agents already deployed to the city as an occupying force.

Reached by phone by USA TODAY, the Figueroa family declined to speak immediately, citing potential litigation. Dayanne Figueroa released a statement online.

“I was shocked and scared,” she said of the moment she was pulled from the car and pinned to the asphalt. “An agent ran into me. I am not involved in any protests or related activities. I will seek justice for how I was treated.”

Figueroa’s encounter with the agent took place on October 10th and was reported in the Chicago Tribune on November 3rd.

The explanation for the woman’s detention came days after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters at a news conference in Gary, Indiana, that no Americans were being held in connection with the blitz.

Homeland Security officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the incident or Noem’s comments.

The Figueroa family is raising money to cover legal and medical costs related to the incident. The woman said the encounter occurred after she had recently undergone kidney surgery and that she subsequently went to the hospital “due to excessive force being used while in custody.”

What does the video show?

A video posted by Figueroa’s family on YouTube shows immigration officials detaining a man on a city street while several passersby protest the arrest.

Federal agents placed the man in a minivan and began driving away. Agents in a second vehicle attempted to follow, returned to the roadway, and apparently collided with Figueroa’s car.

The agents stopped the car, got out with their weapons drawn and surrounded Figueroa’s car.

“You guys hit her, what happened?” says the man filming. “She’s about to go to work.”

Gov. J.B. Pritzker urged Illinoisans to videotape immigration officers doing their jobs. Mr. Pritzker established a commission to catalog potential abuses.

Deputies took Figueroa from the vehicle and restrained him on the ground. Her shoes fall off as she is dragged out of the car. She yelled at them to stop and get out of there.

“You guys have no heart,” says the man filming the video.

Other Americans detained by immigration officials

Court filings, videos and news reports indicate that Figueroa was not the only American ultimately detained by immigration agents who bombed the White House.

John Cerrone, a military veteran, was briefly detained at the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, according to federal court filings. He was arrested during a demonstration outside the facility.

The site has become a hotbed of protests amid reports of inhumane conditions inside the boarded-up building. Cerrone testified in the lawsuit about the conditions inside, saying there was “blood, other body fluids and hair in the sink and on the walls.” Investigators boasted that they shot him in the head with a rubber bullet. And he was denied access to a lawyer.

“Even in Afghanistan, we had very clear rules of engagement,” Cerrone told the Guardian. “The actions of these agents will result in them being removed from the front lines if an incident occurs in Afghanistan. They will be court-martialed.”

Chicago Aldo. Jesse Fuentes is planning to file a lawsuit against federal officials after briefly detaining the alderman on Oct. 3, according to court documents shared with USA TODAY.

Arnold Carrillo Jr., a U.S. citizen and resident of northwest Indiana, who was also affected by the raid, told USA TODAY that federal agents arrested his sister and brother, who are also citizens, during the Oct. 23 raid. Officers also arrested Carrillo’s parents, who are from Mexico.

“I just want my family back,” Carrillo said. “I want my mother back, I want my father back, I miss my mother’s cooking and her advice. I took it all for granted.”

Trump focuses on final New Jersey gubernatorial race

President Donald Trump held telephone rallies in New Jersey and Virginia on the eve of the Nov. 4 election to mobilize voters.

play

President Donald Trump heavily promoted the New Jersey gubernatorial race during a teleconference on the eve of Election Day, declaring that “the whole country” is watching New Jersey and touting Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.

However, at a similar event to support Republican candidates in Virginia on Monday, Nov. 3, President Trump did not even mention Republican candidate Winsome Earl Sears by name, distancing himself from the race where Democrat Abigail Spanberger has a large lead in the polls, NBC News and CNN reported.

The president’s contrasting approaches to Republican candidates in Virginia and New Jersey could be indicative of their political prospects, as the Real Clear Politics polling average has Earl Sears with a 10-point lead, while Ciatarelli is trailing by just 3 points.

President Trump endorsed Ciatarelli and said of New Jersey, “The polls look very strong. It’s almost even.”

President Trump does not support Earl Sears. According to NBC and CNN, he told voters during a Nov. 3 conference call to support the Virginia Republican Party, without mentioning her by name, although he praised Virginia’s Republican attorney general candidate Jason Miyares by name.

Republicans are focused on the race for attorney general in Virginia, where Miyares will face Democrat Jay Jones, who has been embroiled in a texting scandal.

President Trump was asked by reporters on Air Force One about his campaign in Virginia on his way back to the White House from Florida, and he said that Earl Sears was “great,” but noted that he was “not really involved in Virginia.”

Off-year elections in New Jersey, Virginia, California, New York City and elsewhere are seen as important early barometers of how voters feel about Democrats fighting President Trump and his aggressive policies. President Trump has become a prominent figure in the campaign, appearing in ads and being a frequent topic of discussion during debates, as Democrats slam his record and Republicans support it.

Judge orders President Trump to release funds during SNAP shutdown, confirms who benefits

0

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides federal funds to purchase groceries for approximately 42 million low-income and no-income Americans.

As the government shutdown enters its second month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture wrote on its website that “wells are dry” and benefits will not be distributed on November 1. This is the first time SNAP funding has stopped since the program began in 1964.

But on November 3, the Trump administration announced through a court filing that it would allocate funds to cover “50% of eligible households’ current allocations” for partial payments to SNAP participants. Two federal judges have ruled that the Department of Agriculture must pay for food stamps during the government shutdown.

More than 20 states have filed suit against the Department of Agriculture in an attempt to force the Trump administration to fund SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown.

Some states, such as Louisiana, New Mexico, Vermont, and Rhode Island, have adopted state-funded approaches to temporarily cover part or all of SNAP benefits.

How many people will be affected?

The suspension of food stamp payments will affect approximately 12% of Americans. A 2025 USDA study found that SNAP participants used the program for more than half of their monthly food expenses.

Who uses SNAP?

The majority of households participating in SNAP include children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. In 2023, 83% of SNAP participants fell into one of these three categories.

Black, Hispanic, and Native American households are also more likely to use SNAP. According to a Washington Post analysis, 12 out of 50 Black households rely on SNAP, as do 11 out of 50 Native American households and 9 out of 50 Hispanic households.

How long has SNAP been around?

Government-funded financial food assistance began in the United States in 1939 with the Food Stamp Program, created in the aftermath of the Great Depression.

It originally lasted only four years, but was permanently reinstated by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 with the Food Stamp Act.

Participation in the program declined in the late 1990s, but skyrocketed during the 2008 recession with 28.2 million people enrolled in the food stamp program.

That same year, the program was renamed SNAP, and over the next five years, participants steadily increased, reaching an all-time high of 47.6 million in 2013. Participation declined in the late 2010s until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Utz expands snack reach with new regional distribution agreement

0

play

Utz announced it will expand its presence in America’s most populous state as the Pennsylvania-based snack food company looks to expand its snack offerings into the western part of the country.

Utz Brands announced in a press release issued on October 30, 2025, along with its 2025 third quarter earnings report, that the company has acquired the in-store delivery distribution assets of Insignia International.

Insignia International, formerly Flagship Food Group, is comprised of a group of national brands primarily focused on Southwestern and Hispanic foods.

The acquisition includes logistics assets and routes across California and the Midwest, according to the release.

“We are also announcing plans to expand our presence in California,” Utz Brands CEO Howard Friedman said in a release.

“California represents the nation’s largest salty snack market at $4.1 billion, and we believe there is a significant void for our brands.”

Utz already has approximately $79 million in retail sales across California, representing approximately 1.9% of the local market share, according to the release.

The acquisition comes as Utz continues to expand its distribution network across the United States, including the acquisition of Florida distribution assets in 2024.

According to the company’s history, the company was founded in 1921 by William and Sally Utz in their home on McAllister Street in Hanover, and the two began their now-expanding distribution network by delivering their chips to local stores in the Hanover and Baltimore areas.

In its quarterly financial report, the company shared that its “initiatives to improve productivity across the organization” contributed to profit margins, resulting in an increase in sales volume share for nine consecutive quarters.

Utz’s net sales increased 3.4% to $377.8 million in the third quarter of 2025, compared to $365.5 million in the year-ago period, according to the report.

In September 2025, Utz announced plans for major investments and changes throughout its Hanover manufacturing facility, including a brand new community center, the sale of two buildings, and upgrades to its corporate headquarters.

Scott Bessent says he will attend Supreme Court hearing on tariffs

0

play

WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Monday, Nov. 3, that he will appear this week at a Supreme Court hearing on the legality of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which the Treasury secretary called “a matter of national security.”

“I’m actually going to go and sit down, preferably in the front row, ringside,” Bessent said on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Prime Time.” “This is a national security issue.”

President Trump said in a social media post on Nov. 2 that he will not attend Supreme Court oral arguments on the legality of tariffs on imports from other countries. Asked whether appearing before the Supreme Court could be seen as a potential threat, Bessent said: “I emphasize that this is an economic emergency.”

Bessent told Reuters he expected the Supreme Court to uphold tariffs under IEEPA. But Mr. Bessent said in an interview that if tariffs were lowered, the administration would simply switch to other customs authorities, such as Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, which allows broad-based tariffs of 15% for 150 days to calm trade imbalances.

Bessent said Trump could also invoke Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows countries to impose tariffs of up to 50% on countries that discriminate against U.S. trade.

“You have to think they’re here to stay,” Bessent said of President Trump’s tariffs.

Bessent added that countries that signed tariff-cutting trade deals with President Trump “should honor those agreements.” Those who have made a good deal should continue to do so.

The Supreme Court case targets only some of the tariffs President Trump imposed this year. The administration already uses other authorities regarding certain tariffs. He has been busy racking up tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which involves national security concerns to protect strategic sectors such as automobiles, copper, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, robotics, and aircraft, and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which involves investigating unfair trade practices.

“The current administration is addressing tariffs as a cornerstone of economic policy, and businesses and industries need to plan accordingly,” said Tim Brightbill, co-chair of law firm Wiley Lane’s trade law practice in Washington.

At least 65 people have died as a result of Hurricane Melissa.

0

play

The death toll from Hurricane Melissa as it batters the Caribbean has risen to 65 and could rise to at least 73 after Jamaican authorities announced additional death tolls on November 3.

Thirty-two people have been confirmed dead in Jamaica, but Jamaican authorities are working to confirm eight more deaths, Information Minister Dana Morris-Dixon said in an afternoon update on November 3. The hurricane claimed 31 lives in Haiti and two in the Dominican Republic.

Melissa made landfall on Jamaica’s southwest coast a week ago, with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts in excess of 320 mph in its center. Strong winds, extreme rain, and overwhelming storm surge caused widespread damage across the island, particularly in western Jamaica.

Tuesday, November 4, is a week away, but “it feels like 10 years,” said Darryl Buzz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport.

Labor and Social Security Minister Pernell Charles Jr. said 25 communities on the island remain isolated. Charles said the hurricane tested the island “in ways we could never have imagined.”

Efforts to restore damaged electricity and water supply

Morris Dixon and others described ongoing efforts to restore electricity and water services and provide food, water and relief supplies.

Power has been restored to about half of the island’s customers, mostly in urban areas, said Hugh Grant, president and CEO of Jamaica Power Services. “Our iron lattice structure was twisted and falling to the ground,” Grant said.

Grant noted that work is underway around the clock. For example, he explained that an electrical worker whose wife suffered a seizure when the doors and windows of their home were blown out during the hurricane has not yet been able to have her stay with him as he works to help restore power.

Large-scale damage was also reported to the island’s water system. Matthew Samuda from the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation said an intake pipe for the Great River system was washed away on the north bank. Of the 763 water systems on the island, 641 were disrupted.

Officials also implored people without business in western Jamaica to refrain from leaving their homes. Tourists and people taking selfies caused massive traffic jams, blocking the passage of trucks carrying relief supplies, officials said.

Relief supplies and personnel arrive

Jamaican officials said relief workers and supplies were arriving from around the world, including the United States, Canada, Venezuela, France and the Netherlands.

“The world is helping us… because they love Jamaica,” Vaz said.

On November 3, the U.S. State Department posted on X that it would provide an initial $11 million in foreign aid to support the Jamaican community, including emergency food supplies for up to 40,000 people and the installation of six water treatment systems.

Morris Dixon said donations to Jamaica’s official donation site are approaching $1 million.

Member’s Mark’s “Super Greens” powder is recalled due to salmonella outbreak

play

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that Member’s Mark brand nutritional supplement powder “Super Greens” has been recalled amid an ongoing salmonella outbreak.

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating reports of salmonella infections in multiple states, including three cases in Virginia. Due to the spread of infection, 11 people became ill and three were hospitalized.

The FDA said its investigation showed that the cause of all illnesses in this outbreak can be traced to a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder from Vallon Farm Direct PVT LTD in Jodhpur, India. Officials said batches of moringa powder were supplied to multiple distributors across the country.

As a result of the investigation, all Member’s Mark “Super Green” nutritional supplement powder products were recalled, regardless of lot code or “best by” date. Sold at Sam’s Club stores nationwide.

The agency indicated that more products may be recalled as it continues to investigate contamination sites.

“Once notified by our supplier, we acted quickly to remove this product from the affected clubs,” Sam’s Club said in a Nov. 3 statement shared with USA TODAY. “The health and safety of our members is our top priority.”

Why was Member’s Mark’s “Super Greens” powder recalled?

The distribution and sale of Member’s Mark branded “Super Greens” powder has been linked to salmonella outbreaks in multiple states. The cause of the illness was linked to a single lot of moringa leaf powder from an India-based manufacturer.

Which Member’s Mark “Super Greens” powders have been recalled?

All without regard to lot codes or “best by” dates.

The affected products were sold at Sam’s Club stores nationwide and online.

Additional products from other stores may be recalled as the FDA investigation continues. Sam’s Club has discontinued distribution and sales of the product, but some consumers may still have the product in their homes, according to an FDA release.

The agency is encouraging consumers to avoid consuming or offering Member’s Mark’s “Supergreens” dietary supplement powder. Consumers who own a recalled product can either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

11 people reported infected with salmonella

The Salmonella outbreak linked to moringa leaf powder includes 11 cases in seven states, according to the CDC. Three of those cases resulted in hospitalization.

Infections have been reported in the following states:

  • Florida (2)
  • Kansas (2)
  • Michigan (1)
  • North Carolina (1)
  • New York (1)
  • South Carolina (1)
  • Virginia (3)

Salmonella symptoms

“Children under the age of 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of serious infection,” the FDA added.

Donald Trump supports Andrew Cuomo against Zoran Mandani in New York

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really don’t have a choice. You just have to vote for him and hope he does a great job,” Trump wrote.

play

President Donald Trump has launched a belated bid to shake up New York’s mayoral race, urging voters to support Andrew Cuomo to thwart Zoran Mamdani, a frequent target of the president’s ire.

Mr. Cuomo, a longtime Democrat and former governor of New York, is currently running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mr. Mamdani, a democratic socialist who was leading in the polls.

“I would rather see a proven Democrat win than Mr. Mamdani,” Trump wrote on social media, adding, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really don’t have a choice. You have to vote for him and expect him to do a great job. He can do it, Mr. Mamdani can’t!”

Trump’s comments were his most enthusiastic about Mr. Cuomo so far, and he reluctantly suggested that Mr. Cuomo was a better choice than Mr. Mamdani in an interview that aired on “60 Minutes” on November 2.

“I’m not a fan of Mr. Cuomo one way or the other,” Trump said, adding that he would rather have a “bad Democrat” than Mr. Mamdani, the state lawmaker who has vowed to stand up to the president.

The Republican president also said in comments on Nov. 3 that a vote for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the race was a “vote for Mamdani,” and went on to threaten to withhold federal funds from the city if Mamdani wins.

“It is highly unlikely that I will provide any federal funding other than the bare minimum necessary,” Trump wrote.

Mamdani has been in the national spotlight as Trump works to rally supporters of Cuomo in the final hours of what has emerged as one of the key 2025 races, with repeated attacks from Trump, who has painted Mamdani as too liberal. Opinion polls show competition is heating up.

“I haven’t had any conversations with him and I’m not going to accept any support from President Trump,” Cuomo told NBC News’ “Meet the Press NOW” in October while campaigning in a heavily Democratic city where the president is deeply unpopular.

Mamdani slammed the former governor after President Trump announced his support for the candidate on “60 Minutes.”

“Congratulations @AndrewCuomo,” Mamdani wrote on social media. “I know how hard you worked for this.”

Election Day is Tuesday, November 4th, and there’s only a little time left to register and see if you’re ready to vote.

If you tend to wait until the last minute to make sure your registration is up to date and ready, you may be in luck. More than 20 U.S. states allow same-day registration during early voting and on Election Day.

Voters in New York City, New Jersey, Virginia and California will vote on one mayor, two governors and redistricting measures, providing an early test of Democratic and Republican strategies ahead of next year’s midterm congressional elections.

States that allow same-day voter registration

Same-day registration is available in 23 states and Washington, DC. Most allow you to register on election day, but some have conditions, such as only applying to presidential elections or allowing you to register only by early voting.

Two states, Alaska and Rhode Island, only allow same-day registration to vote in the presidential and vice presidential elections.
