  • For the marketing team at Chevrolet, General Motors’ best-selling car brand, universality is a key decision-maker when choosing inspiration for its “Holiday Card to America” ad.
  • Exploring the joys and sorrows of raising children from a mother’s perspective is heart-wrenching.
  • The marketing director behind the ad, which was first launched during the coronavirus pandemic, said the aim of the ad was to uplift the mood while respecting the country’s mood.

A family road trip to a small town in the north.

This is an experience that many Americans across the country can relate to.

For the marketing team at Chevrolet, General Motors’ best-selling car brand, universality is a key decision-maker when choosing inspiration for its “Holiday Card to America” ad. This is how a family road trip (in a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban) became the backdrop for this year’s spot titled “Memory Lane.”

“Memory Lane,” which first aired this year during the Thanksgiving NFL broadcast, features the pit stops and pitfalls of family vacations. This is Chevrolet’s fifth annual seasonal ad, and it’s carefully crafted to tug at the heartstrings without being a hard sell.

Exploring the joys and heartbreaks of raising children from a mother’s perspective is truly engaging. Previously, the film featured a son driving with his father in his late grandfather’s 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck as he overcomes the pressures surrounding his decision to attend college. Another year, the spot featured a woman battling early-stage Alzheimer’s disease who still remembers riding in her 1972 Chevrolet Suburban with her granddaughter.

Featuring vintage cars serves two purposes. Chevrolet marketing leaders say this emphasizes Chevrolet’s generational brand recognition and product longevity. The vehicle serves as a stage for the company’s curated theater of memory, sadness, nostalgia and love, drafted by the brand’s creative agency and marketing team.

Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s chief marketing officer, said the purpose of the ad, first launched during the coronavirus pandemic, is to uplift while respecting the nation’s mood, but the decision to highlight the traditional family unit this holiday season was “apolitical.”

“At Chevrolet, we have a responsibility to be a brand that is acceptable, appealing and relevant to all Americans. We are equally proud of the work we do across geographies and demographics. Identity politics and the like have little impact on what we do,” he said. “This year I was thinking about the line, ‘Together, let’s take a drive.’ We can come together as a country and try to put aside the things that get in the way and talk about and celebrate what’s important.”

first time motherhood

Another common denominator among those working on this year’s campaign? Parent-child relationship.

Chevrolet brand campaign leader Jazztan “Jazzy” Teen jumped at the chance to be a part of the campaign even before she knew she was going to become a mother.

Her due date is the first week of December.

“I hope this spot becomes popular before the baby is born,” she said. “As I create this story about preserving traditions and spending time with family…I realize how quickly time passes. If I hadn’t been pregnant, I would still look at this place and think of my mother and grandmother and the traditions around the house. But now that I’m a mother myself, I’m thinking about what I’m going to do.”

Although the spot wasn’t modeled after any particular family, the teens said in their hearts that those who saw the ad found a window into their own holiday traditions. Despite his training in storytelling and his role in crafting stories that make people cry, the teen found himself far from immune. She said that during filming, she surprised herself by crying during certain scenes.

“In the script, the mother is multitasking in the back seat trying to reach for the bottle, and that was stressful to watch,” she said. “I was thinking, “Will my husband and I be able to do that? Do we know when the baby is hungry? And I don’t want to wake up and my baby is already 18 years old. That was the moment that choked me. I don’t want it to go through the diaper stage and be all over it.”

Although GM is a global company, a significant portion of its employees live in the Detroit metropolitan area. Teen said filming took several days and spanned multiple locations in Michigan to take advantage of the landscapes the team calls most home. Filming locations include Kensington State Park in Milford, Bruce Township, Lexington, Pleasant Ridge, and more, and astute viewers will be able to spot several “Easter eggs” that further reveal the locations in which the short film is set.

In one section, the family features decorations wrapped in newspapers from the Detroit Free Press, which is kept in a cookie tin from Thunder, which is part of the USA TODAY Network. A Michigan “Mitten” ornament appeared on a tree at a Christmas tree farm where the family stopped along the way.

“I kept the Michigan mitten ornament from when we were filming,” the teen confessed. “I wanted to be able to tell my daughter one day that I was on set when she was in the womb.”

Creation of advertisements in the digital environment

The spot is one of several channels Chevrolet is using to reach and engage an increasingly digitally savvy audience. Majoros said the brand is working with more than five influencers who are Chevrolet drivers to create content about how the brand fits into their lifestyles, as well as incorporating more experiential events for Chevrolet drivers.

As part of this year’s holiday marketing drive, Chevrolet is conducting a five-city Chevrolet Holiday Magic Tour. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV pickup will travel from San Diego to Detroit for five holiday events. The fleet will arrive in San Diego on December 1st, Dallas on December 4th, Nashville on December 7th, Atlanta on December 9th, and Detroit on December 11th.

“In this day and age where content is short and fast, it’s good to take a step back. We’re not traditional flirts,” Majoros told the Free Press. “Those are very emotional purchases that people don’t buy very often. I have to explain that briefly. If you’re not in this space every day, you have to have that top of mind awareness when it comes time to think about your car.”

Part of the development will also include cinema spots. Majoros said movie theaters are the perfect place for potential customers to experience the full 3-minute, 21-second ad without distractions.

As for the advertising itself, Majoros said it’s an area the company is deliberately keeping quiet about. GM doesn’t disclose advertising costs, but he said it spent what the industry expects for high-end productions.

The spot ends strong with a series of short cuts summarizing each part of the journey, he said. It begins with the two brothers facing each other and smiling, and continues with the young men with their backs turned to each other, looking out their respective windows. That sequence ends with an empty seat, but for an empty seat star like Majoros, it was a “gut punch.”

“I remember going to Michigan State when my middle son was in first grade. The other boys had already left home. I was home alone for the first time and I just started yelling. What the hell is going on? This life is going by so quickly,” he said. “You spend about 10 years with your kids. For the first two years, you do everything you can to keep them alive, and then they leave with their friends.”

Mom’s role in holiday magic

Connor Huber, director of global brand strategy for Chevrolet, faced a similar emotional revelation when he saw the ad. Hoover, a Wisconsin native, has three children, ages 12, 9 and “almost 6.”

Hoover knew the group had found the right theme for the ad during the pitch phase. So I realized that people felt compelled to reveal the most specific details of their personal family traditions and share stories of road trips from their formative years. She recalled her childhood trekking through rural Iowa to visit her grandparents.

“I really relate to the car packing scene, when that little girl used to draw on the windows. She used to have a Walkman and wrestle in the back and read until she got car sick… There was a place along the road that helped her mark time as a child,” she said. “When I watch this movie now, I identify with the kids in a way when I used to drive every holiday, but I also relate to the adults. It reminds me of when my kids were teenagers and the trips we took to get home for the holidays.”

The decision to tell the story from the mother’s perspective was a natural one, Hoover added, speaking from her own experience.

“There’s a moment when you realize that the magic of your holiday is just your mom. I put a lot of effort into creating an experience they’ll remember, an experience they’ll remember, an experience where they know they’re loved, rather than creating a quote-unquote perfect Christmas,” she said. “For many families, mothers are the bearers of that tradition.”

Is it safe to eat Thanksgiving leftovers? When to market additional food?

0

Thanksgiving dinner often includes leftovers that last a while. But how long does it take before it’s no longer safe to eat?

play

The end of November may mean Thanksgiving is over, but that doesn’t mean you have to enjoy the food that comes with the American holiday. If you want to spend the last weekend of the month snacking on Thanksgiving leftovers, there are some precautions you can take.

According to FoodSafety.gov, an online food safety resource managed by multiple federal agencies, Monday, Dec. 1, will likely be the last day Thanksgiving leftovers are safe to eat. After four days, most foods stored in the refrigerator will begin to develop spoilage bacteria, which will cause the food to develop off-flavors and tastes. However, leftovers stored in the freezer can last for several months, and some can last until spring.

Generally, food is safe to consume if it is refrigerated within two hours of being removed from the oven or refrigerator. If you’re looking to preserve your fall foods for as long as possible, here’s what you need to know to keep them edible.

How long can turkey fillets be stored in the refrigerator?

FoodSafety.gov says leftover turkey and trimmings can be stored in the refrigerator for three to four days. That means meat stored for Thanksgiving will be available until the first Monday in December.

Store leftovers in the freezer to make them last longer. Freezing leftovers within 4 days ensures food safety for months instead of days, but quality may deteriorate over time. The best time to eat leftovers stored in the freezer is within 2 to 6 months.

How do I reheat leftovers?

According to FoodSafety.gov, leftovers must reach an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit before eating. The site recommends placing food evenly on microwave-safe glass or ceramic plates with lids.

Be sure to check the internal temperature of different parts of the food you’re reheating, as cold spots in the microwave are a possibility, especially if you have foods with different densities.

How do I thaw leftovers?

We recommend thawing leftovers in the refrigerator, microwave, or cold water. Defrosting in the refrigerator takes the longest, but is a safe way to thaw leftovers. If defrosting in cold water, place leftovers in leak-proof packaging or plastic bags, advises the Food Safety and Inspection Service. If a bag of leftover food starts leaking, it can introduce water into the food and bacteria from the air.

Defrosted leftovers can be refrozen after thawing if fully cooked. When eating leftovers again, follow best thawing and reheating methods.

Bears defeat defending champions by game down, Bears vs. Eagles winners and losers

0

play

  • In the NFL’s “Black Friday” game, the Chicago Bears defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-15.
  • Chicago’s rushing attack, led by D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, overwhelmed the Eagles’ defense.
  • Philadelphia’s offense continued to struggle, and even their signature “push-push” plays resulted in fumbles.
  • The Bears’ victory improves their chances of making the playoffs to nearly 75%, allowing them a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Eagles.

PHILADELPHIA — When push-push doesn’t even work, there must be a lot of trouble going on for the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the third of the NFL’s “Black Friday” games, the defending Super Bowl champions lost 24-15 to the upstart Chicago Bears.

Chicago punished the Eagles on the ground all afternoon, and the Eagles’ offense appeared to be all but lost except for a few plays, as a troubling trend for Philadelphia continued.

Of course, the results are not as simple as the final score. Here are the winners and losers of the November 28th showcase.

winner

D’Andrian Swift, Kyle Monaney

After Monangai got things going early, Swift ran hard throughout the match. Every time it looked like their run was coming to a natural end, there always seemed to be another cut, another push available on the Bears’ backs. And they took advantage of it.

In a revenge game for former Eagle Swift, he rushed 18 times for 125 yards and one touchdown. Monangai, a seventh-round rookie, had 22 carries for 130 yards and a score of his own. It looked like the Eagles couldn’t stop them.

Bears offensive line

Of course, Monangai and Swift wouldn’t have gone shopping if the Bears’ offensive line hadn’t dominated the line of scrimmage — sorry for the rush, but I’m in the Black Friday spirit here — if the Bears’ offensive line hadn’t dominated the line of scrimmage. Monangai’s big run in the first quarter was an example of this, with the line pushing the Eagles to the left and Monangai pushing the run back in the opposite direction. On the ensuing drive, the big boys forced Monangai to first and third downs.

The 84 rushing yards were the most yards allowed in the first quarter for the Eagles since 2022. The 142 yards on the ground in the first half were Philadelphia’s most given up in a half since 2015.

The offensive line will be handled by first-unit head coach Ben Johnson, and the front office responded by bringing in three interior linemen during the offseason. The win over the Eagles was (arguably) the most important proof of concept of why it was essential to flipping the Bears from a punch line to the playoffs.

mother nature

Wind gusts of 20 mph and approaching 40 mph blew from the open northwest corner of the stadium, creating a left-to-right pattern that greatly influenced the game, from ball flight to the decision-making of both head coaches. The goalposts were visibly shaking.

bears defense

Once again without a starting linebacker, the team relied more on its “don’t bend, don’t break” philosophy to hold up against the (albeit struggling) Eagles offense for most of the season. The return of cornerback Jaylon Johnson and defensive back Kyler Gordon from their respective injuries provides some insurance on the back end. But it was the front that kept the Eagles’ run game at bay and made Eagles QB Jalen Hurts uncomfortable.

Bears’ postseason seeding, chances

Both teams entered with records of 8 wins and 3 losses, tied for first place in their respective divisions. The Bears currently hold a head-to-head advantage in the tiebreaker over the Eagles, which could determine postseason seeding. According to Next Gen Stats’ playoff probability metric, the Bears have a near 75% chance of making the playoffs. If he had lost, his odds would have been closer to 50%.

AJ Brown

Throw him the ball and good things will happen. Retreating to their own 8-yard line, the Eagles quickly gained some breathing room by having Brown run diagonally up the middle for 16 points. Three plays later, Brown beat a defender after Hurts tossed the ball up near the goal line. He made it and scored two touchdowns for the Eagles. He had a game-high 10 catches for 132 yards, much of which ended up in garbage time.

eagles fans

The boo birds were out early and often as the Eagles’ offensive inefficiency reared its ugly head again. Philadelphia ran 18 plays in the first half. Chicago was tied on offense 48 times.

dallas cowboys

Suddenly resurgent in the NFC East race, the Cowboys are a team on the rise within the rivalry at 6-5-1.

loser

Skilled QB play

Neither quarterback played particularly well, understanding that the wind was certainly a factor. In the first half, Hurts completed 5 of 10 passes for 57 yards. Williams wasn’t that great, going 11-for-24 for 90 yards.

Both teams found the end zone in the second half, and the Eagles gained momentum in the third quarter when Williams’ screen pass attempt resulted in an interception with the Eagles up 10-9.

The Eagles were heading for their fourth consecutive 3-and-out, but on a scramble drill play in which Hurts tried to lead wide receiver Darius Cooper to the sideline, Hurts was intercepted by Kevin Beard (who had a league-leading 6 points this season for the No. 1 unit in the NFL), who beat him (or possibly underthrew Brown as he was running across the field).

Williams made a spectacular touchdown throw to Cole Kmet in the fourth quarter, going 17-of-35 and helping bring the game to a close. But he left plenty of throws on the field, including two into the end zone in the first half that could have resulted in touchdowns had he planted his feet properly and sent the ball accurately.

tash push

As Hurts has done so many times before, with less than five minutes left in the third and one yard left, he crouched under center before moving the chains in the red zone. Bears defensive back Nashon Wright had a different idea. Wright swung the ball loose from Hearts’ clutches and won the battle for the ball at the bottom of the scrum.

Saquon Barkley

Although there was more room to run than in most Eagles games this year, Barkley continued another week without a home run play, finishing with 56 rushing yards on 13 attempts. His involvement in the passing game did not improve (2 catches, 0 yards).

kevin patullo

The Eagles’ offensive coordinator’s scheme design will be further diagnosed in the coming days and weeks. However, if you think about it right away, the fact is that Patullo’s troops could not remain on the field for two consecutive games.

Pattullo’s experimentation and efforts to bring his “RPO” game to life backfired, with one particular play being a prime example. Brown lined up in a two-back set and began moving across the formation. It was exactly the kind of creativity Eagles fans were looking for. But Barkley wasn’t aiming for the ball, and the ball skimmed past him incompletely.

jake elliott

Philadelphia’s kicker is no stranger to extra-point mishaps, and it happened when he took a potential game-tying kick to the left in the third quarter to keep the game 10-9 in Chicago’s favor.

green bay packers

A Bears loss would give the Packers a half-game lead in the NFC North. Instead, it remains in the wildcard slot for now.

eagles fans

They don’t really want to boo, do they? Most of them have been eliminated. Honestly, who could blame them?

Pepsi’s prebiotic cola goes online on Black Friday

play

Soft drink fans can be the first to taste Pepsi’s new healthy carbonated beverage.

Pepsi Prebiotic Cola will be in stores in early 2026, PepsiCo announced on July 21. But ahead of that, Pepsi Prebiotic Cola is now available in limited quantities online.

Eight-packs of both Original Coke and Cherry Vanilla flavors will be available starting Black Friday, November 28th, at Amazon, Walmart.com, Pepsi TikTok Shop, and in select markets via Kroger.com, DashMart, and Gopuff while supplies last. People watching the Chicago Bears vs. Philadelphia Eagles game on Amazon Prime Video on Black Friday will be able to purchase drinks from their TV screen.

“This breakthrough innovation maintains the iconic Pepsi taste that people love, without any artificial sweeteners, low sugars or functional ingredients,” Gustavo Reina, Pepsi’s vice president of marketing, said in a news release.

The new Pepsi prebiotic drink comes months after PepsiCo acquired prebiotic soda maker Poppi for $1.95 billion in March.

Poppi and other prebiotic beverages such as Olipop and Culture Pops are gaining acceptance from consumers seeking healthier drink options. Coca-Cola launched its own Simply Pop prebiotic drink in February.

What are the ingredients in Pepsi Prebiotic Cola?

A 12-ounce can of Pepsi Prebiotic Coke contains 5 grams of sugar, compared to 41 grams of total sugar in traditional Pepsi, according to Pepsi’s website. A can has 30 calories, compared to 150 calories in a traditional can. Each can of Pepsi Prebiotic Cola also contains 3 grams of prebiotic fiber. Traditional Pepsi has a carbohydrate content of 41 grams, while Pepsi Prebiotic Cola has a carbohydrate content of 6 grams.

Here is the ingredient list for Pepsi Prebiotic Cola and Traditional Pepsi:

  • Pepsi Prebiotic Cola: Carbonated water, cane sugar, soluble corn fiber, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, stevia extract, caffeine.
  • Traditional Pepsi: Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, sugar, phosphoric acid, caffeine, citric acid, natural flavor.

What is prebiotic soda?

Poppi and Olipop launched the prebiotic soda category in 2018, touting plant-based fiber ingredients that increase the number of good bacteria in your gut. However, most prebiotic sodas contain between 2 and 9 grams of prebiotic fiber per can, far short of the recommended daily intake of fiber (25 to 38 grams), according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Last year, Poppi faced a class action lawsuit filed after consumers said they wouldn’t have bought the product had they known it contained just 2 grams of prebiotic fiber. Mr. Poppi settled the lawsuit for $8.9 million in September 2025.

“Prebiotic soda is certainly a healthier alternative to soda for people who are looking for a bubbly (and) sweet drink and don’t want to give up soda completely,” Jessica Alfano, a clinical dietitian at Huntington Hospital in New York, told USA TODAY after the lawsuit was filed.

But “this is definitely not a product that will fix your gut health by drinking one or two cans a day,” she says.

Sen. Mike Bohacek votes against redistricting after Trump’s use of the ‘r-word’

0

play

Indiana’s Republican senators announced on November 28 that they will vote against the state’s redistricting efforts after President Donald Trump used a slur in a Thanksgiving social media post.

President Trump’s Nov. 27 Truth social post, one of a series of anti-immigrant comments posted Thursday, called Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz the “r-word.” The word was previously used in a medical context, but is now widely considered offensive and disability advocates are trying to stop its use.

“Those who don’t know me or my family may not know that my daughter has Down syndrome,” state Sen. Mike Bohacek, R-Michiana Shores, wrote on Facebook. “This is not the first time our president has made such insulting and derogatory statements, and his choice of words will have consequences.”

President Trump is asking several states, including Indiana, to redraw their congressional maps to create safer Republican districts for the 2026 midterm elections.

Redistricting in Indiana appeared to be dead in 2025 when Roderick Bray, president pro tempore of the state Senate, announced on November 14 that there were no votes to support redistricting in the state. But Mr. Bray reversed course on Nov. 25, saying the Senate would effectively vote on whatever proposal the House proposed.

The House is scheduled to convene Dec. 1 to discuss the new map, and the Senate is scheduled to vote on Dec. 8. Both chambers must pass a bill to send the bill to Gov. Mike Brown for it to be signed into law.

Bohacek, who had not previously made any public statements on redistricting, was one of 19 Republican senators who voted to reconvene in January rather than the December redistricting session.

Indiana’s redistricting dispute has drawn both President Trump’s ire and threats to local lawmakers in recent weeks.

Donald Trump says Joe Biden’s automatic public action ‘this ends’

0

Mr. Biden has so far rejected Mr. Trump’s claims, as past presidents have long used autopens.

play

President Donald Trump on November 28 continued his long-standing campaign to reverse actions taken by his predecessor, saying on Truth Social that anything signed by former President Joe Biden using autopen technology is invalid.

“Every document signed by Mr. Sleepy Joe Biden with his autopen (approximately 92% of it) is hereby destroyed and has no further enforcement or effect,” Trump wrote.

Although social media declarations are not legally enforceable, Trump’s letter could signal future actions, such as refusing to enforce executive orders from the Biden administration.

Alternatively, President Trump may simply want to score political points and delegitimize Biden’s actions by showing that Biden is not in charge of his White House, an accusation Biden has rejected.

Trump has previously mocked Biden for using an autopen and even replaced the 46th president’s portrait in the White House with a photo from the device.

What is an autopen?

An autopen is a machine that uses real ink to sign documents with a pen or other instrument. Very useful for people whose signatures appear on thousands of letters. That’s why presidents, including Trump, have relied on them for more than a century.

The president is legally allowed to use an autopen

According to the Shaple Manuscript Foundation, presidents are believed to have used automatic pens for more than 200 years, dating back to the time of Thomas Jefferson, who obtained a patent for one in 1803. Gerald Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama are known to have used this device. In 2011, Obama became the first president to use an autopen to sign legislation.

In 2005, during the Bush administration, the Department of Justice recognized the use of autopens as legal. “A person may sign a document by directing another person to affix his or her signature,” the Justice Department memo states.

Legal scholars point out that there is no provision in the Constitution that requires the president to sign a pardon.

What else did Trump say?

Trump has suggested without evidence that he was unaware of Biden’s autopen signatures, which he claims invalidates them.

Trump went on to say, “The use of autopens is not authorized unless specifically approved by the President of the United States.” “The radical left lunatics surrounding Biden around his beautiful, resolute desk in the Oval Office stole the presidency away from him. Because the people who were running Autopen did it illegally, I hereby rescind every executive order and everything that crooked Joe Biden did not personally sign. Joe Biden was not involved in the Autopen process, and he would be charged with perjury if he said he was.”

President Trump made similar claims in June, at which time he called for an investigation. On October 28, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee recommended an investigation to the Department of Justice.

The White House responded to a question about how Biden’s “termination” order would take effect by simply referencing Trump’s post.

President Trump also uses an autopen

President Trump told reporters in March that he had used an autopen, but only for “very unimportant papers.”

“As you know, we’ve received thousands of letters of support for our young people from people who are sick and others,” Trump said. “But signing the pardon and everything he signed with an autopen is a disgrace.”

Biden denies Trump’s claims

In a July interview with The New York Times, Biden called Republicans “liars” who claimed they didn’t know about his White House actions signed by Autopen.

“Every decision was made by me,” Biden said.

Can President Trump do this?

Typically, the president can override previous executive orders with his new executive orders. However, you need to make real orders, not just make statements on social media.

Pardons, on the other hand, are irrevocable. President Trump claimed in March that the pardon Biden issued was “invalid” because Biden used an autopen.

Is this really about amnesty?

Trump has taken unprecedented steps to deploy the Justice Department against his political opponents and harbors a longstanding vendetta against the Biden family. To protect his family from potential future prosecution by the Trump administration, Biden pardoned family members of potential offenders before leaving office, including his son Hunter and brother James.

President Trump previously said he would target “the entire Biden crime family” for prosecution. Future Trump appointees, including FBI Director Kash Patel, made similar comments.

Donald Trump pardons former Honduran leader Juan Orlando Hernández

0

The latest pardon announcement was made even though Trump has set crackdowns on illegal drug trafficking as a centerpiece of his second term.

play

President Donald Trump has announced that he will pardon the former Honduran president who was sentenced to 45 years in prison on drug and gun charges, a move that comes as Trump regularly speaks about the need to crack down on illegal drugs.

Trump said in a social media post on Nov. 28 that he would pardon former two-term Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted by a U.S. jury last year of “conspiring to distribute over 400 tons of cocaine and related firearms offenses,” according to the Justice Department.

“I am extending a full pardon to former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who, according to many people I respect, has been treated very harshly and unjustly,” Trump wrote on social media.

The Justice Department said in a press release last year that Hernández accepted millions of dollars in bribes from “violent drug lords” and used the funds to “fuel his rise in Honduran politics.”

“As a result, once Hernández assumed power in Honduras, he increased his support and protection for his co-conspirators, helping them move mountains of cocaine, commit acts of violence and murder, and turn Honduras into one of the most dangerous countries in the world,” the press release said.

President Trump has made cracking down on illegal drug trafficking a centerpiece of his second term, imposing tariffs on countries he accuses of not doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl. The regime also launched military attacks on suspected drug-trafficking ships in the Caribbean. President Trump told military officials during a Thanksgiving conference call that he would soon expand military operations to include ground attacks.

Trump also intervened in Honduran politics on November 28, renewing his support for Nasri Asufura of the Conservative National Party, who he said would push back against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and “his narco-terrorists.”

“Will Maduro and his narco-terrorists take over other countries like they took over Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela?” President Trump wrote in a social media post. “The man who is standing up for democracy and fighting against Maduro is Tito Asufura.”

Dream car Honda NSX brings humans to the LA Auto Show

0

play

  • The LA Auto Show has several special exhibit areas featuring exotic cars, custom cars, race cars, and more.
  • The show runs through November 30th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Carlo Figueroa stood in front of a white Honda sports car holding a die-cast replica.

It wasn’t a coincidence. Figueroa, 25, of Redlands, Calif., was at the LA Auto Show on Saturday, Nov. 22, to see the car.

“Here’s a diecast model of my dream car, the Honda NSX Type R. I’m going to own one someday, and this represents that,” he said, explaining, “I’ve been obsessed with NSX ever since I was a kid.”

To call Figueroa, who comes to the show every year with his family, just a fan might not do him justice. He grew up with Hondas and his father is a “huge” Honda and Acura fan. His own set of wheels is a sleek black 2019 Honda Civic Type R with a California license plate that reads “NSXNEXT.” He happily showed the reporter a photo on his cell phone.

The NSX was on display in the Hall of Spark, one of several special exhibition areas at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Sparq is a California startup advancing vehicle diagnostic tools.

Replica cars from the Fast and Furious movie and game series were also on display, including two Nissan cars from Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. Actors with ties to the series signed the dashboard, including Noel Gugliemi (who played Hector), Cody Walker (who played Brian O’Connor), and Chad Lindbergh (who played Jesse).

There were also real race cars on display, including the 2018 McLaren MCL33.

In another area near the West Entrance, the Showcase Hall on the fourth day of the show featured even more unusual vehicles, including some very unique Porsches, Ferraris, and even an SUV called the Rezvani Tank.

Near the entrance to the showcase hall, Daniel Herrera, 41, discussed the name of his red 2015 Lamborghini Huracan with his son Rogelio, 7, before moving on to look at the 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia. When asked by a reporter about his favorite car, Rogelio pointed to a yellow Ferrari.

He said he liked the color, seat and shape.

The Herrera family, who live in the Panaorama City neighborhood of Los Angeles, were having a father-son day when the older Herrera was off from his job as a mail carrier.

Herrera said he will probably be looking for a new vehicle next year to replace the 2006 F-150 he bought new about 20 years ago. However, the successor model is unlikely to be a sports car.

“I’m more of a truck guy,” he said.

How green cards from 19 countries will be reconsidered in the wake of the Washington DC shootings

0

More details are forthcoming and legal challenges are likely, but here’s what you need to know about the new federal guidelines.

Federal immigration officials are reexamining green cards issued to people from 19 countries deemed “high risk” at the direction of President Donald Trump.

The decision, announced by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on November 27, comes in response to the fatal shooting of two National Guard soldiers by a suspected Afghan gunman.

“At the direction of @POTUS, I have directed a complete and rigorous review of all green cards for all aliens from all countries of concern,” USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said on X.

play

National Guard member shot in Washington DC identified

The National Guard soldiers shot and killed in Washington, D.C., have been identified as 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolf.

USCIS said it has released new guidance on “negative country-specific factors” to consider when testing people from 19 countries.

In other words, governments could seek to strip green card holders of their legal status from those countries for reasons related to their country of origin rather than their personal conduct.

Andrew Selly, director of the Migration Policy Institute, said the agency’s guidance appears to be vague about how to make these decisions, except that Migration Policy Institute staff have expanded discretion.

Details will be announced and legal issues may arise, but here’s what you need to know about the guidance.

Which countries are included?

The new guidelines apply to migrants from Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

These countries were previously listed in President Trump’s June 4 proclamation seeking to restrict entry of people from these countries.

The Trump administration had previously suspended the resettlement and travel of Afghan refugees on his first day in office, according to Department of Homeland Security Secretary of Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin. She said in an

When does the policy go into effect?

This is effective immediately, according to a USCIS Policy Alert.

How is the Trump administration conducting this review?

The change now appears to more heavily consider people’s countries of origin to justify expulsion from the United States.

President Trump’s past declarations cited in the USCIS guidance included consideration of terrorist group activity, the proportion of nationalities who overstay their visas in the United States, and whether the country can issue secure identification documents.

Who is affected?

People from affected countries applying for permanent residence and people with existing green cards from 19 countries.

The USCIS policy alert states that it will consider “the relevant country-specific facts and circumstances.” This applies to people applying for certain adjustments of status, such as green cards, and for nonimmigrants (usually those in the country temporarily) applying for extension of stay or change of status.

What are the possible outcomes?

Authorities may try to deport someone.

USCIS says the changes will allow its officers to more accurately determine whether a person is a “threat to public safety and national security.”

But Selly said it will be difficult for the government to remove permanent residents unless authorities can prove to an immigration judge that they pose a national security threat. The administration sought to exclude pro-Palestinian student activists on these grounds, leading to a legal battle.

Courts have more freedom in deciding who gets legal status in the country in the first place, but tend to be stricter in stripping that status away.

This may indicate that people seeking permanent residency in the future may be more affected than those who already have green cards.

Will I face legal problems?

Almost certainly.

USCIS bases its policy on a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that authorizes the president to suspend or restrict by proclamation the entry of “all aliens, or aliens of any class, as immigrants or nonimmigrants,” into the United States if entry would harm the national interest.

The U.S. Immigration Council says the provision, while broad, does not give the president all powers. The Trump administration faced lawsuits during its first term for using the same provision to impose a “Muslim ban.” The ban was overturned before President Trump issued a third, narrower executive order, and the Supreme Court upheld it.

Kim Kardashian’s brain activity decreases after aneurysm diagnosis

0

play

Brain scans have revealed Kim Kardashian is “hypoactive” after learning she has a small brain aneurysm.

The “All’s Fair” actress, 45, underwent a scan on the Nov. 27 episode of Hulu’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” where Dr. Daniel Amen highlighted “holes” that suggested the front of her brain was “less active than it should be.”

As she prepares to take the California bar exam in July 2025, the renowned psychologist specializing in brain diseases said decreased activity could be caused by chronic stress.

“When your frontal lobe is working, it’s hard to deal with stress, and that’s not good, especially when you’re studying and getting ready to take the board,” Amen told Kardashian, who was with longtime family friend Scott Disick.

Amen added that while the Skims co-founder is not overly anxious or depressed, she is extremely sleepy, which worried her even more.

“That can’t happen. That can’t happen. I can’t accept it,” she said. “We have some (expletive) work to do this summer, so we need to come up with a plan to really fix this.”

On a positive note, Amen assured Kardashian that her risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is not high and said she is “extraordinary in terms of being positive.”

“I have a beautiful brain,” Kardashian said in a confessional. “I’ve heard that before.”

Kim Kardashian shares latest information about brain aneurysm

After revealing his cerebellar aneurysm diagnosis on the Oct. 23 episode of “The Kardashians,” the entrepreneur gave an update on “Good Morning America” on Oct. 28.

“I ended up having to go to Cedars[Sinai Medical Center]and have a bunch of other brain scans,” Kardashian told journalist Robin Roberts.

She assured the public that she was okay and urged viewers to tune in, adding: “Everything will be fine.”

In a previous episode of the reality series, Kardashian suggested that her “mini” aneurysm was caused by the stress of her divorce from Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.

Kim to retake California bar exam after failing

Earlier this month, Kardashian admitted on her Instagram Story that she did not pass the California Bar Exam in July, which is required to become a lawyer in the state.

She said that since she started her law career six years ago, she has been determined to continue taking exams until she passes.

“Well…I’m not a lawyer yet. I just play a well-dressed lawyer on TV,” he admitted of his new role in Ryan Murphy’s not-so-critically-acclaimed series “All’s Fair.” “I’m still giving it my all until I pass the bar. No shortcuts, no giving up. Just learning more and being more determined.”

She continued: “Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me so far. Failing is not failure, it’s energy. I was so close to passing the exam, and that motivated me even more. Let’s go!”

Sears only has five stores left on Black Friday this year. Will they survive?

0

Sears, once a retail giant rivaling Amazon, Walmart and Target, is now a shadow of its former self.

play

Sears was once a retail giant with more than 3,500 stores, including Kmart stores after its 2005 merger. But today, it’s just a vestige of what it once was, and people are wondering if it will survive until Christmas 2026.

“Sears can no longer compete against other retailers with both brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers with better product selection, location advantages, and greater convenience,” said Dan Hamilton Rice, director of the E.J. Awaso College of Business Behavioral Research and the Herbert Huey McElveen Development Scholar and Leslie Associate Professor and Dal Miller Professor.

There are only five Sears stores left in the country: one in California, one in Texas, one in Massachusetts, and two in Florida.

And some experts, like Rice, believe there is a “certain chance” this will be Sears’ last Black Friday.

“With so few stores, industry experts and former officials have serious doubts that it will ever be profitable,” Rice told USA TODAY in an email.

According to Britannica, the company was founded in 1893 as a mail-order business. It opened its first retail store in Chicago in 1925 and has grown to become one of the nation’s largest retailers, rivaling Amazon.

After the company filed for bankruptcy in 2019, only a few stores remain, and some are at risk of closure.

Here’s what you need to know about this retailer and whether it’ll be back next year.

What will happen to the remaining Sears?

Coral Gables, Florida, a city in Miami-Dade County, is home to one of the state’s two remaining Sears stores. The other is in Orlando.

However, the location of the retail store, which has existed since 1954, could be converted into residential and retail space, according to the Miami Herald.

The rest of Sears is According to a report from CNN, Simon Property Group, the largest shopping mall operator in the United States,.

Sears store locator:

map visualization

Where is Sears located?

Sears is located in the following cities:

  • Braintree, Massachusetts
  • concord, california
  • El Paso, Texas
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Coral Gables, Florida

What led to Sears’ downfall?

Several factors led to Sears’ current situation.

“All consumer issues fundamentally come down to companies not adapting to changes in consumers,” Rice said.

Rice said Sears used to have its own brands like Craftsman and Kenmore, but when those brands were sold elsewhere, there was no reason for people to go to Sears. The retail giant was also slow to adapt to online shopping, falling behind other retailers.

“With store closures reducing the number of reasons to visit and reducing store footprint, the company is no longer able to attract customers with compelling reasons to choose it over other retailers, both online and offline,” Rice said.

Kristin Chenoweth is ‘very proud’ of controversial ‘Queen of Versailles’

0

Caviar dreams are not like that.

Kristin Chenoweth’s return to Broadway, The Queen of Versailles, announced last week that it will close on January 4, 2026, after just 65 regular performances and 32 preview performances. The musical, which reportedly cost $22.5 million to produce, did well, albeit modestly, at the box office, but was largely panned by critics.

Chenoweth, 57, seems to be taking the news of her early exit from the show in stride.

“I want to say that I’m so proud of this new art that we’ve created, but it’s getting harder and harder to make that happen,” the Tony Award winner said in an Instagram video posted on Nov. 26. “I think of all the shows that have come and gone over the last few seasons that not everyone got to see. I love Broadway and I love audiences and the live art form.”

Based on the 2012 documentary, The Queen of Versailles follows socialite Jackie Siegel (Chenoweth) and her timeshare mogul husband David (F. Murray Abraham) as they attempt to build America’s largest home. But the 2008 stock market crash derailed their plans, and the Orlando-based couple suffered a personal tragedy in 2015 when their teenage daughter Victoria (Nina White) died.

“The Queen of Versailles” has come under fire from critics and theater fans for its focus on the Siegel family, longtime Republicans and friends of President Donald Trump. The show was described as “sickeningly tone-deaf” by The Daily Beast and “a MAGA musical nightmare” by The Wrap. The subject has sparked debate in the famously inclusive Broadway community, which includes countless people of color and LGBTQ+ members directly affected by President Trump’s policies.

Chenoweth also faced backlash in September for an Instagram comment in which she expressed “heartbreak” over the shooting death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

The “Wicked” actress ended her recent video with a message urging audiences to watch Broadway shows, which have struggled to bounce back since COVID-19. According to the New York Times, 46 new musicals have opened since the pandemic, but only three have turned a profit.

Producers are also reducing their opportunities for new releases. “The Queen of Versailles” was one of only two original musicals to open on Broadway this fall, along with the popular romantic comedy “Two Strangers.”

Chenoweth added, “Broadway is the best,” and urged people to support the arts. “There is an art form called live performance, and there is nothing better than sharing that experience with an audience.”

Did people shop online on Thanksgiving? What we know.

play

Preliminary Black Friday sales data won’t start being released until the evening or the day after Black Friday, but reports on Thanksgiving sales show that spending is strong.

This year’s Thanksgiving sales increased from last year, according to sales statistics from at least two companies that track shopping.

Shoppers go online the most before Thanksgiving meal

Adobe says shoppers spent a record $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving. Adobe said sales rose 5.3% year over year as shoppers took advantage of Cyber Week sales.

Actual spending on the day exceeded Adobe’s expectations ($6.37 billion). Adobe says online sales peaked earlier in the day, with the strongest sales occurring between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Last year, peak shopping hours were 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“The size of the discounts was a hot topic yesterday on Thanksgiving, as retailers leaned on offering great deals to drive consumer demand online,” Vivek Pandya, principal analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, said in a press release. “This trend was further fueled by impulse-driven mobile shopping and the use of generative AI to help shoppers find the best deals, two trends that resulted in overall Thanksgiving spending that exceeded expectations.”

Adobe expects Black Friday online sales to reach a record $11.7 billion, up 8.3% from last year. Adobe expects Cyber Monday sales to increase 6.3% year over year to $14.2 billion.

Adobe said big-ticket purchases for homes, as well as video games and electronics, increased on Thanksgiving. Online sales of video game consoles increased by 740% this October compared to the average spend. Sales of refrigerators and freezers increased by 720%.

Global Thanksgiving sales also increase

Salesforce data also reported an increase in Thanksgiving sales. According to Salesforce, digital sales totaled $35.6 billion worldwide (up 6% year over year) and $8.4 billion in the United States. This was a 3% increase compared to last year’s Thanksgiving online sales.

Salesforce expects Black Friday to be the biggest online shopping day, with global online sales of $78 billion (up 5% year-over-year) and $18 billion in the U.S. (up 3%).

According to Salesforce, the best-performing shopping category in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day was active apparel and footwear, with sales up 19% year-over-year.

President Donald Trump says military will attack ground targets in Venezuela “soon”

President Donald Trump told the U.S. military on Thanksgiving that military operations would soon include land strikes, as U.S. forces build up near Venezuela and attack suspected drug smuggling vessels.

“We’ve been working on interdicting Venezuelan drug traffickers for the last few weeks,” President Trump said in a phone call with military officials, alluding to a boat attack. “We’re going to start interdicting them from land as well. It’s easier on land, but it’s going to start soon.”

Since early September, the Trump administration has attacked at least 21 boats in international waters in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, killing 83 people, many of them Venezuelan. Without providing evidence, administration officials said the ships were attempting to transport drugs to the United States.

The military action has drawn criticism from legal experts, who question the legality of using deadly force rather than attempting to arrest a suspected trafficking vessel and its cargo. Senate Democrats this week stepped up their demands for the Trump administration to publicly explain the legal justification for carrying out the attack.

“Few decisions are more important to a democracy than the use of deadly force,” the 13 senators, all members of the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees, wrote in a Nov. 24 letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

President Trump has said for weeks that he is considering ground strikes against targets inside Venezuela. Tensions are rising as the United States has stationed its largest aircraft carrier, two guided missile destroyers, and a special operations ship near Venezuela. Approximately 12,000 troops are stationed in the area.

On November 24, the Trump administration designated the Cartel de los Soles, which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claims to lead, as a foreign terrorist organization, accusing it of further escalating a long-standing rivalry.

But even as he considers escalating military action, Trump has left the door open to diplomacy, saying he may talk directly with Maduro amid a pressure campaign on Latin American leaders.

“I might talk to him, we’ll see,” Trump said on November 25, when asked about Maduro while en route to Florida on Air Force One.

Those who received the Supplemental Securities Income Check will receive two checks during December.

According to the Social Security Administration’s calendar, December SSI payments are scheduled to be made on Monday, Dec. 1. The January 2026 check will then be issued on December 31st.

SSI payments are typically issued on the first of the month, but if the first of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, such as in January (January 1 is New Year’s Day), payments will be issued earlier.

A similar situation occurred in October, and because November 1st fell on a Saturday, SSI recipients received payments on October 1st and October 31st. According to SSA’s calendar, August 1st is a Saturday, so this situation won’t happen again until July 2026, when recipients will receive checks on July 1st and July 31st.

What is SSI?

Administered by the Social Security Administration, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides benefits to people with limited or no income or assets, people age 65 and older, and people who are blind or have a qualifying disability. According to the SSA website, children with eligible disabilities are eligible to receive SSI. Approximately 7.4 million Americans currently receive monthly SSI payments, the agency said.

Adults who earn more than $2,019 per month from work are generally not eligible for benefits. About one-third of SSI recipients also receive Social Security benefits.

To see if you qualify for SSI, visit the Social Security website. You can also visit your local Social Security office in person or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. local time on weekdays.

  • President Donald Trump called a CBS News reporter a “stupid person” during a Thanksgiving press conference.
  • The exchange came as a reporter questioned the Biden administration’s condemnation of the man who allegedly shot and killed a National Guard member from Afghanistan.
  • In response to the incident, the Trump administration suspended some immigration applications and announced a review of asylum applications.

President Donald Trump called a reporter a “stupid person” during an exchange on Thanksgiving.

After speaking with military personnel, President Trump answered questions from reporters about the shooting of two National Guardsmen near the White House on November 26th. The suspect has been identified as an Afghan national who came to the United States in 2021, and the Department of Homeland Security announced it would review all approved asylum applications under the Biden administration.

“Why are you blaming the Biden administration when the Justice Department IG just reported that there was a thorough investigation by DHS and the FBI of Afghans brought to the United States this year?” CBS News’ Nancy Cordes asked Trump in Florida, saying the suspects had been vetted and were “innocent.”

“Are you an idiot for letting him in? Are you an idiot?” Trump responded. “Because they flew in with thousands of people who shouldn’t be here, and you’re just asking questions, because you’re an idiot.”

Exchange regarding DC shooting incident following ‘quiet pig’ comment

President Trump’s interactions with reporters have attracted particular attention since Trump told a reporter on Air Force One on November 14th that he was a “quiet piglet” when he asked follow-up questions about the Jeffrey Epstein file.

The alleged gunman in the National Guard shooting previously worked with the U.S. military and CIA-backed forces in Afghanistan. Rahmanullah Rakanwal, 29, came to the United States as part of Operation Allied Welcoming, a refugee program that evacuates vulnerable Afghans who cooperated with the U.S. military during the war.

One of the victims, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, a US Army specialist, died on November 27th. The other victim was U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Sarah Beckstrom, 20. President Trump said Andrew Wolf, 24, remained in critical condition as of November 27.

Lakhanwal was shot shortly after the attack and remains hospitalized in critical condition. He is expected to be charged with first-degree murder after killing one of the victims, and the FBI is investigating the incident as an “act of terrorism.”

The Trump administration also announced that it would suspend admission applications for Afghan nationals and reevaluate green card holders from 19 countries deemed “high risk.”

If Waymo or robotaxis misbehave, it will bother the police. The reason is as follows

0

Who will suffer if no one drives? If a driverless car exhibits any abnormalities, police will be faced with an unresolved problem.

play

In September, a driverless taxi was caught on video illegally passing a school bus as children were being dropped off in Georgia. That same month, a self-driving car made an illegal U-turn in California and was stopped by a confused police officer. Later that month, a robot taxi ran over and killed a neighbor’s beloved cat in San Francisco.

A series of recent accidents and violations involving driverless cars has left law enforcement and state officials grappling with how to hold self-driving cars and their manufacturers accountable for their mistakes on the road.

As self-driving cars come under increasing scrutiny, one central question is emerging. That is, what happens if a self-driving car violates traffic laws.

Vehicles that do not require a human at the steering wheel are currently operating in California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and Georgia. Companies like Waymo and Tesla have also begun testing their vehicles in Florida.

Nationwide, more than half of states have passed laws allowing autonomous vehicle testing and public operation, but each jurisdiction appears to have different regulations, especially when it comes to traffic violations.

For example, Arizona and Texas have laws that allow police officers to cite self-driving cars for traffic violations in the same way they would if a person was behind the wheel. A new California law set to go into effect next year will allow police officers to issue notices, but it’s unclear whether there will be any penalties for filing paperwork.

The lack of similar laws in other states, including Georgia, has left police confused and lawmakers looking for ways to regulate the emerging technology.

As companies like Waymo, Tesla and Amazon’s Zoox seek to expand their self-driving car fleets, other states will also have to decide what regulations, if any, they will implement. And some safety experts say many will need to reconsider whether the laws already in place are too lenient.

Waymo is the largest manufacturer of robot taxis in the United States, with a fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles nationwide. The company says its taxis are designed to comply with traffic rules and that if an accident occurs, they can be stopped and held accountable.

“While we have seen several cases where local law enforcement agencies do not understand what their options and authority are, we can and do obtain and pay citations in the locations where we operate,” the company said in a statement to USA TODAY. “State regulators may also suspend AV operations for legitimate safety reasons.”

Some observers are concerned about the relationship between self-driving car companies and state governments tasked with keeping our roads safe.

“For all practical purposes, companies can do just about anything they want to do, and we just hope they have a strong enough appetite for safety,” said Phil Koopman, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University with decades of experience in self-driving car safety.

He added: “No state in the United States holds these companies fully accountable.”

“No driver, no manpower, no clue.”

In late September, the San Bruno Police Department in California’s Bay Area posted multiple images on social media of one of its officers looking into the open window of a Waymo driverless taxi.

The caption said that during a drunk-driving investigation, a police officer saw the Waymo make an illegal U-turn at a traffic light and stopped it. Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, says its vehicles are designed to stop when they detect police lights or sirens.

“That’s right…no driver, no people, no leads,” the police department said in a post about the incident. “Officers stopped the vehicle and contacted the company to inform them of the ‘malfunction’.”

The statement added: “We were unable to issue a ticket because there was no human driver (there is no ‘robot’ column in our citation book).”

The traffic stop made national headlines and became a prime example of the predicament police find themselves in when stopping self-driving cars. No one is behind the wheel. So who gets punished for mistakes?

Starting July 1, 2026, California police officers will be able to issue “violation notices” to self-driving car companies in connection with suspected traffic violations. But so far, the state has not said what the penalties associated with these notices will be, and experts are skeptical that they will have any impact on manufacturers.

“As far as I know, violation notices are of no use,” Koopman said. “If the school writes to mom and dad and they decide not to do anything, there are no consequences.”

What is a traffic ticket for a billion dollar company?

Even in states where police officers can charge companies with self-driving car traffic violations, such fees are just a drop in the bucket.

Koopman said tickets, which provide a written record of violations and a way to track them, are the beginning of accountability, but far from a solution.

“For these companies, a $100 traffic fine is not going to get much attention,” he says.

Meanwhile, police officials say tickets are rarely issued for robot taxis.

Phoenix was the first city where Waymo first launched robotaxis, and remains the main hub for the service. “I am not aware of any incidents where self-driving cars have been a topic of discussion,” Phoenix Police Department spokesman Brian Bower said in an email to USA TODAY.

In Atlanta, lawmakers vow to draft robotaxi regulations

In September, a Waymo taxi in Atlanta was recorded failing to stop for a school bus as children were being dropped off. The incident sparked an immediate backlash, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launching an investigation into hundreds of the company’s self-driving cars.

Video of the incident shows a Waymo taxi moving around the school bus with its red lights flashing and its stop arm deployed. NHTSA said in a statement that Waymo taxis drive an average of 2 million miles per week, and given the heavy use of robotaxis, “it is likely that similar incidents have occurred before.”

Georgia, where the incident occurred, does not have a law that allows police to charge self-driving cars. But the video has sparked outrage among state lawmakers, some of whom have vowed to take action.

Republican state Sen. Rick Williams told KGW8 he plans to introduce legislation to hold self-driving car companies accountable. Ms. Williams was a sponsor of Addy’s Law, which introduced the possibility of jail time and fines for those who illegally pass school buses with flashing lights.

“Self-driving cars should be stopped until we figure this out,” he said, adding: “They shouldn’t be on the roads because they’re too dangerous for children.”

Georgia state Rep. Clint Crow, a co-sponsor of the Addies Act, said he wants companies to be penalized for self-driving car violations in the same way as regular drivers.

“I’m a big fan of new and emerging technologies…but we had to think about how they would comply with the law,” he told the outlet. “We’re going to have to really rethink who’s in charge, who’s responsible for controlling that vehicle, and who’s going to be driving that vehicle.”

How safe are self-driving cars?

Companies leading the self-driving revolution, including Waymo and Tesla, claim their vehicles are safer than cars driven by humans, but experts say there isn’t enough data to support such claims.

According to a study published in December by insurance giant Swiss Re, the Weymos had covered more than 25.3 million miles and had nine property damage claims and two personal injury claims. According to the study, the same number of miles driven would result in 78 property damage claims and 26 personal injury claims from human-driven vehicles.

But a study published by the RAND Corporation, a nonpartisan global think tank, found that self-driving cars would need to travel 275 million miles without failing before they could be considered as safe as humans. Waymo, which has the largest fleet of robot taxis, reached 100 million miles this summer.

Missy Cummings, a professor at George Mason University and an expert on self-driving car safety, cited the RAND study and said claims that self-driving cars are safer than humans are a “gross statistical exaggeration.”

“Humans drive trillions of miles every year,” she says. “[Autonomous vehicles]are in the low millions, so you can’t compare the two at this point.”

Regulators now face a new challenge: how to enable innovation while taking safety precautions into account. Cummings and Koopman told USA TODAY that self-driving cars will encounter different scenarios and be updated to improve. But as we have more self-driving cars across the country and more time spent driving in our communities, the likelihood of an accident will increase.

Companies themselves know this and are aware of this.

At a technology conference in San Francisco last month, a reporter asked Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana whether he thought society would “accept death that could be caused by robots.”

“I think society will,” Mawakana said, adding that the issue applies to all self-driving car companies, not just Waymo, according to SF Gate. “I think the challenge for us is to ensure that society has high enough safety standards that it imposes on businesses.”
