Will Duolingo take over closed Hooters restaurants? what we know.

“Learning can appear in unexpected places, and sometimes Duo will too,” the brand said in a statement.

play

Duolingo is back to its antics once again, this time taking over the space previously occupied by another owl mascot.

Language learning platform Duolingo has posted “Coming Soon” banners at four closed Hooters restaurants across the country. The brand has not disclosed its plans for the closed restaurant, but residents have shared their speculations on social media.

In a statement obtained by USA TODAY, the brand said, “The duo has always had a flair for drama. When he spotted an empty nest across the country, he did what any overly ambitious owl would do: leave a few feathers behind and see who would notice.” “Learning can appear in unexpected places, and Duo is no different.”

Although unconfirmed, some social media users are speculating that the sign is for an expansion of Duo’s Taqueria, a Mexican restaurant owned by Duolingo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Conveniently located near Duolingo’s headquarters, this restaurant opened in 2023 and has become a local favorite, appearing on several lists for the city’s best tacos in Pittsburgh.

‘From hooters to tutors’: social media influences

However, some people are just getting in on the Duolingo fun.

“From Hooters to tutors,” one Reddit user said on the Galveston, Texas, subreddit.

“Next time Hooters will remember to complete the daily lesson,” another user said on the St. Louis subreddit.

Hooters’ installation feels like an ode to the brand’s meme-filled year.

Duolingo scared some users in February by teasing that its iconic owl mascot, Duo, had died mysteriously, but within a week the brand admitted that the death was a joke. The prank served as a global campaign, pitting different countries against each other to see who could earn the most in-app points to save Duo.

This summer, Hooters closed more than 30 stores in more than a dozen states. The closures come after Hooters agreed to sell 151 company-owned stores to a franchise group to settle $376 million in debt. The chain has had its stores closed since at least 2024, even though the company has said it plans to keep its doors open.

Where will Duolingo take over the closed Hooters?

As confirmed by the brand in a statement obtained by USA TODAY, Duolingo’s temporary locations are located at:

  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Beaumont, Texas
  • Galveston, Texas

How long will Duolingo be installed at Hooters?

Duolingo told USA TODAY on Wednesday, Dec. 10, that the facility will be open to the public for a “limited time.”

Why didn’t Maria Colina Machado arrive? his daughter wins the Nobel Prize

play

The silence that had enveloped Oslo since Maria Colina Machado’s press conference was canceled was broken on December 10 this year by an unexpected video. Daughter Ana Colina Sosa crosses the main hall of Oslo City Hall to accept the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Venezuela’s opposition leader. Machado was unable to make it to the ceremony, but she and the Nobel Institute confirmed that she was traveling to Norway and would arrive “within a few hours.”

A visibly moved Sosa opened the ceremony with a message that shook the audience. “I can say with joy that in a few hours I will be able to hold her here in Oslo, after 16 months in seclusion.”

A few minutes later, he read out the acceptance speech written by his mother. This speech was a message dedicated to Venezuelans who are resisting both at home and abroad, and to those who are unable to see their families due to persecution.

“As I wait for the moment when I can hold her, I think of the other daughters and sons who cannot see their mothers today… She just wants to live in a free Venezuela and she will never give up on that goal.”

Nobel Committee calls for Maduro’s resignation, condemns torture, repression and humanitarian crisis

In an unusually frank speech, Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Fridnes called on President Nicolas Maduro to accept the results of the 2024 election and step down to allow a peaceful transition to democracy. “The Venezuelan people have already spoken. He must accept it and resign,” Fridnes declared. Machado and the rebels “lit a fire that no amount of torture, no amount of lies, no amount of fear can extinguish,” he added.

Addressing King Harald and King Sonia, as well as delegations from Panama, Argentina and Paraguay, the commission’s president accused Venezuela of becoming an authoritarian state characterized by torture, disappearances and one of the world’s largest refugee crises, with more than 8 million Venezuelans forced to migrate.

Fridnes also pointed the blame at the regime’s international allies, saying, “Behind President Maduro is Cuba, Russia, Iran, China, Hezbollah… They are strengthening the regime and making it more brutal.”

Who is María Colina Machado and what does her leadership in Latin America represent?

Machado, the daughter of a prominent Caracas family, trained as an industrial engineer and entered politics in 2002 as co-founder of Sumate, a civil society group that pushed for a recall referendum against Hugo Chávez. For two decades, he has faced judicial repression, parliamentary removals, and defamation campaigns, but has remained committed to a peaceful and electoral path. Her insistence on “staying and fighting from within” distinguishes her from other opposition leaders who have chosen exile.

The Nobel Committee also emphasized the symbolic value of their resistance in a region where democracy faces increasing threats. “Machado represents hope for a different future, where fundamental rights are protected and citizens’ voices are heard,” the statement said. Analysts said his award was a direct message to other pro-democracy movements in the hemisphere, and that the international community continues to monitor and recognize the courage of its citizens.

What was Maria Colina Machado’s message?

In a speech read by her daughter, Maria Colina Machado traced the history of Venezuela’s democracy and its gradual dissolution. He recalled political prisoners, persecutors and exiles, calling it an “open wound”.

The opposition dedicated the award to the “heroes of this path” and, she said, the millions of Venezuelans who defended their votes in the 2024 elections.

“The dictatorship responded with fear. 2,500 people were kidnapped, disappeared, and tortured for sharing their election records.” Yet his message was one of deep hope: “Venezuela will breathe again. We will open the prison doors and see the sun rise for thousands of innocent people.”

During the ceremony, the venue was filled with Venezuelan music, with Danny Ocean performing “Alma Llanera” and “Venezuela,” and pianist Gabriela Montero performing a moving version of “Mi Querencia.”

Machado promises to arrive in Oslo within hours and return to Venezuela soon.

The Nobel Institute confirmed that Machado was safe and on his way to Oslo, but he was unable to attend any official events that day. Sosa asserted that the opposition leader intends to return to Venezuela “soon”, a sign of political defiance that could reshape the domestic scenario.

Machado’s arrival in Oslo could be one of the most iconic moments of the year. After 16 months in hiding, the family is reunited to send a message to the world about the persistence of Venezuela’s democratic struggle.

Judge allows further release of Epstein grand jury materials

0

play

WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, Dec. 10, a U.S. judge in Manhattan authorized the release of records of a grand jury investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, citing the latest in a series of similar rulings recently passed by Congress.

The order by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman came a day after another judge granted a similar request in the case of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is imprisoned for sex trafficking of underage girls.

The ruling could lead to the release of material that further reveals Mr. Epstein’s ties to the wealthy and powerful, including President Donald Trump.

Berman had in August denied a prior Justice Department request to unseal grand jury materials, which are normally permanently sealed by law, citing “potential threats to the safety and privacy of victims.” But the judge said in Wednesday’s order that the disclosure was justified because of the Epstein File Transparency Act, which President Trump signed last month.

Many Trump supporters believe the administration covered up Epstein’s relationships with powerful figures and obscured details about his 2019 death in a Manhattan prison on federal sex trafficking charges. Epstein’s death was officially ruled a suicide.

President Trump had opposed the release of the files, saying he had ended his friendship with Epstein long before he was arrested in 2019, but reversed course just before lawmakers were to vote on the bill.

In a Nov. 24 motion, the Justice Department asked Berman to authorize the release of grand jury transcripts and investigative evidence and said he would “appropriately redact” victim-related information and other personally identifying information to the extent permitted by the new law.

Berman’s order Wednesday granted the department’s November request. He wrote that “the safety and privacy of victims is paramount” and that protections for victims are consistent with the new law.

The Justice Department has set a December 19 deadline for releasing the so-called “Epstein Files” under the new law.

The nanny’s brother was deported. Her MAGA boss is unsympathetic.

0

play

In early November, a nanny in a major U.S. city sent a last-minute text message to the family she worked for letting them know she wouldn’t be able to come to work that day.

Her brother was being held by immigration and customs officials.

“I was with my sister-in-law and nephew,” the nanny recalls. She asked USA TODAY to withhold her name for fear of putting her family at further risk. “They were destroyed.”

The baby’s mother, for whom she is a nanny, responded by questioning her citizenship. The nanny knew about her boss’s policies even though she had never discussed them. She saw her family wearing red “Make America Great Again” hats in public and found pro-President Donald Trump flags hanging inside their home.

The nanny was born in the United States, but several family members were not. She says her brother, who has since been deported to Mexico, has lived in the United States since elementary school and has no criminal record as far as she knows. “He’s the hardest-working person I know,” she added.

The nanny told her boss that she needed a few days off to support her family while her brother was detained.

“I woke up to a very long email (from my mother), and she said, ‘What are we going to do now? … I know it’s hard, but it’s not our problem.'” Her boss said government officials had a job to do and they “just want to get rid of criminals.”

“He started crying,” the nanny says. “How can someone be so inconsiderate? Can’t she see how much I love my child, how much I care for her? And can’t she have any compassion for me?”

In 2025, ICE agents arrested more than 225,000 people, according to federal data obtained and published by the Deportation Data Project. The Trump administration has said the purpose of the arrests was to target violent criminals, but about one-third of those arrested included people with pending convictions or criminal charges. The immigration crackdown has caused widespread fear among immigrants and citizens alike, and the childcare sector is feeling the strain.

For some, school no longer feels like a safe place. The Associated Press reported that a child care worker in Chicago was detained at work in November. At least 21% of child care workers in the United States are immigrants, according to the Center for Child Care Employment Research at the University of California, Berkeley. A new report from New America, a nonpartisan think tank based in Washington, D.C., finds that the recent escalation in immigration enforcement has resulted in 39,000 fewer foreign-born child care workers and, in turn, 77,000 fewer working mothers.

Chris Herbst, a public policy professor at Arizona State University who led the New America study, said there are “many theories that have been put forward about what’s causing this decline” in women’s numbers in the workforce. “Is it the back-to-office policy? Is it the rise of tradwife culture? But no one’s really talking about the role that increased ICE activity has played.”

Immigration crackdowns have a major impact on raising children and working parents

Herbst said the child care sector is one of the labor markets most dependent on immigrants. Some of these workers have been arrested and detained this year, or have fled the country in fear, leaving some families in dire straits.

“What we’re hearing from mothers across the country is that what ICE is doing is having a truly devastating impact on the child care industry, which, honestly, was already suffering before these horrific attacks on immigrants began,” said Donna Norton, executive vice president of Moms Rising, a grassroots organization that advocates for better support for mothers and families.

And that goes without saying, Norton added, especially when ICE agents knock on the doors of schools and child care centers, which has a mental health impact on the children these agents protect.

“For mothers, it’s absolutely horrifying to see masked, armed federal agents roaming outside their children’s childcare facilities, sometimes even entering areas that are supposed to be safe for their youngest children,” Norton said. “Mothers are scared and we know their children have suffered years of deep trauma.”

Childcare providers have also lost some employees to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) “out of fear of immigration enforcement,” said Suma Sethi, a senior immigration policy analyst at the Center for Law and Social Policy, a nonprofit policy think tank in Washington, D.C. DACA is a government program that grants work permits and temporarily suspends deportation to people who entered the country illegally as children.

“It’s not just illegal immigrants” who are dropping out of the workforce, Sethi said. “It’s impacting people who actually have work permits.”

There have also been fewer U.S.-born childcare workers this year, Herbst added. Since the pandemic, progress in this area “seems to be reeling at this point due to the devastating impact ICE has had on child care.”

“And of course it affects the family’s ability to go to work,” he says.

Interestingly, Herbst’s study published by New America found that center-based facilities are seeing a decline in the number of childcare workers, but private family childcare workers, such as nannies, are on the rise. He believes center-based workers “probably feel quite exposed and quite vulnerable,” while workers working from home for individual families have more privacy.

“That doesn’t make these workers any less afraid,” Herbst added.

“I’m scared to go in there every day.”

Ever since the nanny cried after hearing her boss’ comments about ICE, she says, “I feel like I’m walking on eggshells in the house.” She is looking for a new job.

“I’m scared to go in there every day.”

She works part-time for other family members who understand her brother’s situation, the nanny said. She loves working with children and wants to be a nanny for the rest of her life. But she’s scared. She always carries her passport with her and worries every day about other family members who don’t have citizenship.

“I think it’s really unfair,” she said through tears. Her family has always paid taxes. They immigrated to the United States simply “because they wanted something better for us.” Now that he has been deported, her brother will miss the birth of their second child.

“It’s really heartbreaking because[my wife]is going to be born soon,” she said. “And it’s going to be very sad to see him not be there.”

Maria Colina Machado’s daughter receives Nobel Peace Prize in her honor

0

In his daughter’s remarks, the Venezuelan opposition leader said the award was important not only for his country but also for the world.

play

OSLO – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado said Wednesday in a speech given by her daughter at a ceremony that Machado was unable to attend, that democracies must be ready to fight for freedom in order to survive.

The Venezuelan opposition leader said the award has deep meaning not only for his country but also for the world.

“We remind the world that democracy is essential for peace,” she said through her daughter Ana Corina Sosa Machado. My voice cracked when I talked about my mother. “And above all, what we Venezuelans can offer the world are the lessons forged through this long and difficult journey: that to have democracy, you must be willing to fight for freedom.”

Machado didn’t make it to Oslo in time.

A large portrait of Machado with her signature smile was hung at Oslo City Hall. When Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Fridnes said during his speech that Machado would be coming to Oslo, the audience cheered and applauded.

Recalling past laureates Nelson Mandela and Lech Walesa, he said fighters for democracy were expected to “pursue their objectives with a moral purity that their opponents will never display.”

“This is unrealistic. It’s unfair,” he said.

“No democracy functions in ideal conditions. Activist leaders must confront and resolve dilemmas that we on the sidelines can ignore. People living under dictatorships often have to choose between the difficult and the impossible.”

The 58-year-old engineer was scheduled to receive his award in the presence of King Harald in Oslo after more than a year in hiding in defiance of a decade-long travel ban imposed by authorities in his home country.

However, she was unable to arrive in the Norwegian capital in time for the ceremony.

“I’m in Oslo. I’m on my way to Oslo,” Machado told Fridnes in an audio recording released by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

It was unclear where she was calling from.

“We don’t know exactly when she will land, but it will probably happen during the night,” Christian Berg Haabviken, the institute’s director, told Reuters.

Machado left Venezuela by boat on Tuesday for the Caribbean island of Curaçao, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials. In an audio recording of the call with Fridnes, she says she was on a plane. It was unclear where it came from.

“Selections that must be updated daily”

“Freedom is a choice that must be renewed every day, measured by our willingness and courage to defend it. For this reason, Venezuela’s cause transcends borders,” she said in a prepared speech.

“Those who choose freedom contribute not only to themselves but also to humanity.”

In 2024, Machado was barred from running for president despite winning the opposition party’s primary by a landslide. She went into hiding in August 2024 after authorities expanded arrests of opposition figures following voting disputes.

Electoral authorities and the Supreme Court declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner, but international observers and opposition parties say the candidate won easily and that the opposition released ballot-box-level tallies as evidence of victory.

“Fragile” democratic institutions

In his speech, Machado said Venezuelans did not immediately realize that their country was slipping into what he described as a dictatorship.

“By the time we realized how fragile our institutions had become, a man who had once led a military coup to overthrow democracy was elected president. Many thought that charisma could replace the rule of law,” Machado said, referring to the late President Hugo Chávez, who was elected in 1999 and held power until his death in 2013.

“Since 1999, the regime has dismantled our democracy.”

President Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, said US President Donald Trump was trying to overthrow him in order to gain access to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves and that the Venezuelan people and military would resist such efforts.

Venezuela’s military plans to mount a guerrilla-style resistance or cause chaos in the event of a U.S. air or ground attack, according to sources familiar with the effort and planning documents seen by Reuters.

dedicated to trump

When Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize in October, he dedicated a portion of the award to Trump, who said he himself was worthy of the honor.

Despite suspicions by U.S. intelligence agencies, she aligns with hawks close to President Trump who say Maduro has ties to criminal organizations that pose a direct threat to U.S. national security.

The Trump administration has ordered more than 20 military strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coast of Central and South America in recent months.

Human rights groups, some Democrats, and Latin American countries condemned the attack as an illegal and extrajudicial killing of civilians.

During the day, Harold Wayne Nichols appeared to be a loving husband beloved by his wife. He was a serial predator who attacked and raped women at night when they were most vulnerable.

play

Tennessee plans to execute a serial rapist known as the “Red-Headed Stranger” for brutally attacking and murdering one of his victims, a promising young college girl, in her bed.

Harold Wayne Nichols, 64, is scheduled to be executed on Thursday, Dec. 11, for the rape and murder of 20-year-old Karen Pooley, who he beat, raped and left for dead in 1988.

Nichols was living a double life in Chattanooga at the time of his arrest. By all accounts he was a loving husband, and his wife loved and doted on him during the day. He was a serial predator who would relentlessly attack women at night when they were most vulnerable, including his own wedding anniversary.

According to an archived Associated Press article, Nichols admitted to attacking the woman, saying he felt a “strange energy-filled feeling” when he attacked her.

One of his surviving victims said his execution is long overdue, nearly 40 years after Pulley’s crimes terrorized the community, devastated his family and left at least a dozen women with lifelong trauma.

“I hope he gets everything that’s coming,” she told The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. The Tennessean declined to be named because he is the victim of a sex crime.

When and where will Harold Wayne Nichols be executed?

Harold Wayne Nichols is scheduled to be executed at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institute in Nashville.

It was the third execution in the state this year and the 46th in the United States, a figure not reached since 2010. Death penalty experts blame the rising political climate under pro-death penalty President Donald Trump and a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

What was Harold Wayne Nichols convicted of?

On September 30, 1988, 20-year-old Karen Pooley was in bed when Nichols climbed through her bathroom window, hit her over the head with a 2-by-4-inch piece of wood, and then raped her.

“Mr. Nichols then struck her several more times in the head with the two-by-four, shattering her skull and leaving her on the floor bleeding and unconscious,” the federal appellate opinion said.

Pulley’s roommate found him the next morning lying in a pool of blood, but still alive. She died later that day at a nearby hospital.

This was the first of at least a dozen attacks by Nichols in Chattanooga from September 1988 to early 1989. Police said Nichols stalked women who were single or simply home alone.

About a month after Pulley’s murder, Nichols struck again, attacking a 23-year-old woman who had left her door unlocked for her husband at night. Nichols came and hit her over the head with a candlestick and raped her.

On November 1, 1988, his second wedding anniversary with his wife, Nichols attacked another woman, forced her to wear clothes of his own choosing, then raped her at knifepoint.

On January 3, 1989, he raped three women separately, including two single mothers who threatened their children, and attempted to rape a fourth woman, all within four hours of each other, according to court records.

Prosecutors charged Nichols with murder, rape, robbery and assault. He was sentenced to death for Pulley’s murder and 200 years in prison for other crimes.

Killer’s wife says she knew nothing about the attack

Nichols’ wife said she was “obsessed” with her husband before his arrest, according to court records.

She said Nichols, an assistant manager at Godfather’s Pizza, began staying up all night in the summer of 1988 and suspected he was having an affair.

When police questioned her, she initially said there was no way she could have committed the rape on Memorial Day because Nichols was with her. “However, she later discovered that he had left in the middle of the night,” according to the federal appellate opinion.

According to court records, Nichols gave various excuses for his absence, including telling his wife he was going to buy hamburgers.

His wife testified for the defense and said Nichols eventually confessed his guilt to her. He admitted to her that he was dangerous and “shouldn’t be on the streets,” according to court records.

Nichols testified that she knew the rape was wrong but felt she had no choice. “Under cross-examination, Nichols acknowledged that had he not been arrested, he would have continued to prowl at night and continue to rape women,” the federal judge wrote.

Who is Karen Pooley?

Karen Pulley’s sister, Lisette Monroe, told The Tennessean that the past 37 years have been filled with sadness for her, who was Pulley’s last living relative. The girls’ father died in February 1995, and their mother died on Christmas Day 2012.

Monroe was 23 years old and living in Colorado with her husband, Jeff, when her sister was murdered. The couple had planned a trip to Chattanooga to introduce their 18-month-old daughter to her aunt.

“She was a young, innocent, good Christian woman,” Monroe said. “A girl who would never hurt anyone.”

Monroe recalls that as girls, the sisters often fought over makeup and hairbrushes, but they were always close. Growing up, they exchanged dozens of handwritten letters while Monroe and Jeff were stationed in the Philippines in the Air Force. Pooley discussed the boy she was dating and the early stages of studying to become a paralegal at Chattanooga State Community College.

If she could write another letter to her sister, she said, she would start with “I love you.”

“And I miss you more than I know how to express,” she continued. “I wish I had been here to see your nieces grow up and follow in her footsteps and see what beautiful and strong women they have become.”

Monroe said the process to bring Nichols to justice has been slow with numerous appeals over the decades, adding that an execution would help heal deep wounds.

“We’ve been trying to heal for 37 years, but there’s no cure. It’s never been better than this,” said Monroe, who now lives in Washington. “Our lives will be interrupted and we won’t be blaming the victim again every time it happens, and there will be healing on that front.”

That way, the family can “focus on their memories of Karen and their love for her,” she said.

Justin Bateman slams AI use in movies, ignores tech peers

Justin Bateman is never afraid to speak his mind. If you follow her on social media, you know that she has recently criticized artificial intelligence (AI) in the media. But she’s not just posting about it, she’s taking action.

The filmmaker and actress is the founder of Credo23, a council that reviews films and series for a stamp warning viewers that no generative AI was used in their production. The nonprofit organization also plans to hold a film festival in Los Angeles from March 27th to 29th next year. Passes are available now.

“Over two years ago, it was clear to me that AI was going to be part of the end of our business,” she said on a recent Zoom call. “So there are a lot of factors, but it’s definitely the nail in the coffin.” Bateman is keen to buck the trend of other film festivals, such as the Toronto International Film Festival, in adopting AI.

“Generative AI works like a blender. If you want to spit out a movie, you put as many movies as you can find into the blender, and when you turn it on, it slices and dices it… It doesn’t work unless it takes in millions and millions and millions of pieces of information. That’s movies, hundreds, hundreds, hundreds of movies, 100 years of movies and TV series, even home movies and everything you have,” Bateman said in a post online. ” She considers it theft.

“It’s not creating anything new,” Bateman added. “It’s basically vomit.” It’s being used to create alternative backdrops for location shoots and to create AI objects that look like human actors.

Tilly Norwood, a new AI “actress” created by artificial intelligence production studio Particle6, is creating a buzz in the entertainment industry. With AI being the biggest flashpoint in Hollywood today, Norwood had little hope of staying under the radar. SAG-AFTRA, one of the largest entertainment unions, slammed the creation in a statement posted on Instagram, calling it an insult to the work of human performers.

The use of AI was one of the key bargaining issues at the center of the multi-month strike in 2023, which brought Hollywood to a standstill as several unions demanded better balances for regulating streaming and artificial intelligence.

Bateman sees the Credo23 film festival as a way to get through the AI uproar.

“I work every day to get as many sponsors as possible and give filmmakers as much money as possible to make more non-AI films,” she says.

Justin Bateman on AI movies: ‘My tech friends probably hate me’

Is she worried that her hot take will ruffle Hollywood feathers? not much.

“I work with filmmakers, actors, and executives who are actually making the movies,” she says. “I think my tech friends hate me, but I don’t really care.”

Jason Bateman recently opened up about his relationship with his sister Justin.

The “Zootopia 2” actor, 56, said in a new interview with Esquire that he “doesn’t really see” his sister, 59. A fellow actor, Old Man Bateman has appeared on Desperate Housewives and Californication and has been outspoken on several hot-button political issues.

However, Jason Bateman did not cite that as a reason for the distance, saying that the two, who grew up together in Hollywood, share a unique adult bond.

Justin Bateman has been an outspoken critic of the cancel culture that pervaded the Biden era.

“Trying to silence everyone who even wanted to discuss what was going on in our society had negative consequences,” she said in a November 2024 interview with USA TODAY. “And when you look at the election results, you can see for many people that it’s over. That’s why I say this election is over.”

How much is a 2025 penny worth? The last coin minted goes up for sale

0

A special collection of 232 sets of the last 2025 pennies produced by the U.S. Mint will be auctioned off later this week. Already collectors are willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars to own them.

play

The last penny minted is about to be auctioned off, and there are signs that it will fetch (excuse the word) quite a penny.

The U.S. Mint announced last month that the auction will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, and will be handled by Stack’s Bowers Gallery. This “special sale” will feature a 232-piece three-coin set, including pairs of 24-carat uncirculated and circulated pennies, from the final production run at the Mint’s manufacturing facilities in Philadelphia and Denver.

Potential buyers have already begun bidding online on Stack’s Bowers Gallery site. Bids on most lots range from about $10,000 to $34,000, with the final lot going for about $290,000.

However, these bids could be even higher, as anonymous online bidding increases at standard intervals without the highest bid being made public. Once live bidding begins, the amount may exceed the amount listed on the site at that time.

John Kraljevich, director of numismatic Americana at Stack’s Bowers, told USA TODAY that auctioneers are uncertain how the bidding will proceed because “nobody has had a chance to bid on something like this before. There’s nothing comparable.” “These things work because there are many different factors to desirability.”

What’s so special about Pennies up for auction?

The 232 set consists of the last circulation pennies ever minted by the U.S. Mint. Each set includes one of the last 323 minted at the Philadelphia Mint and one of the last 232 minted at the Denver Mint. Each set also includes the first ever 24-karat gold penny available in gold, making it not a special proof coin, but one of the rarest gold coins produced by the U.S. Mint.

The numbers in the set represent 232 years since the penny’s creation in 1793. Every penny bears the Ω symbol, or Omega’s private mark, which marks the end of the penny and reflects the coin’s unique characteristics.

Each set comes with a certificate of authenticity with serial number, and the final lot, set number 232, also comes with the three original dies used to strike the coins.

The final penny set goes beyond coin collecting in some ways, Kraljevic said. As for Penny, he said, “You’re really talking about a cultural icon. I mean, there’s a reason there were songs about Penny and movies about Penny, and, you know, Ben Franklin had a saying about Penny.” “They really hold a central place in our culture like no other coin.”

As a result, Kraljevic expects widespread interest in the auction. “I think we’ll see interest not only from avid coin collectors per se, but also from people who are interested in all kinds of high-end collectibles and all kinds of culturally interesting objects,” he said.

John Albanese, co-founder of Rare Coin Certification CAC Grading, which authenticated the U.S. Mint’s last Lincoln cent, agrees. “There will be thousands of very serious collectors who are interested,” he told USA TODAY when announcing the auction. “There are hundreds of thousands of people who are not serious collectors but just want to buy something pretty…I expect them to do well.” At the time, he estimated the 232 three-coin sets would likely fetch about $45,000 to $50,000 each.

When will the Last Penny Auction take place?

Live bidding for the 232 sets begins Thursday, December 11th at noon ET/9am PT. The auction will be held at Stack’s Bowers Gallery headquarters in Costa Mesa, California, and will be livestreamed on its website.

Now that the last penny has been minted, will there be any more pennies?

No, there are billions of pennies in circulation, and Kraljevic estimates that the U.S. Mint has produced about 31 billion pennies in the past six years. And they are still viable currencies. It’s just that the U.S. Mint doesn’t make them anymore.

The U.S. Mint said in its 2024 annual report that one penny costs 3.69 cents to produce. As a result, President Donald Trump in February ordered the Treasury Department to stop minting pennies.

Although pennies are still in circulation, some stores are starting to run out of pennies, and some McDonald’s stores are also experiencing a penny shortage, requiring businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel if a customer doesn’t have exact change.

Will my 2025 penny be worth more than a penny?

Not likely. Just as there was misleading hype about the value of some Lincoln Wheat pennies, there may be misinformation about the increase in the value of the 2025 penny.

Shortly after the Treasury Department announced plans in May to force the U.S. Mint to halt production, John Feigenbaum, publisher of the rare coin pricing guide Gray Sheet and executive director of the Professional Numismatics Guild (PNG), a nonprofit group made up of many of the nation’s rare coin experts, told USA TODAY, “Statistically, there’s nothing to say they should be worth anything.”

“There’s a lot of money out there, so there’s no need for people to look at these prices and think that a penny in the change tray next to their bed is automatically worth this amount of money,” Kraljevic said. “This is a very special kind of thing, so I think it’s probably important to highlight that.”

And you may not have seen the last new penny minted. The U.S. Mint does not intend to create new pennies for circulation, but “it could take a hit in the future” due to the release of special collectibles, he said.

“So the cents aren’t done yet,” Kraljevic said. “We’re just stopping distribution production, so there’s a little bit of a difference there.”

First look at Port Campbell’s new megaship, MSC World Atlantic

0

play

  • MSC Cruises plans to launch its new megaship, MSC World Atlantic, from Port Canaveral, Florida, in late 2027.
  • The ship will be adding new venues, including Viva La Musica, a Latin-themed music and dance club.
  • Familiar attractions such as the Cliffhanger Swing Ride and the MSC Yacht Club onboard concept will also be included.

Another giant ship is coming to Florida. MSC Cruises will launch MSC World Atlantic in late 2027, bringing world-class cruises to Port Canaveral.

The 6,758-guest capacity ship will combine popular elements from its predecessors, including MSC World America, which launched in 2025, with new additions, said Lynn Trent, president of MSC Cruises North America. “So in terms of our European style versus American comfort positioning, some things will be very similar,” she told USA TODAY. “It works really well here in the U.S., but there will be some new things happening within that space and experience.”

MSC World Atlantic opened for reservations on December 10th (announced in a video message from Drew Barrymore, Godmother of MSC World America). Here’s what travelers need to know:

What’s new on MSC World Atlantic?

Viva La Musica will debut as one of more than 30 restaurants and bars onboard. “The theme here is a vibrant new venue celebrating Latin culture with live music, dancing and energetic nightlife, and an alternative to MSC World America’s (Fizz) Champagne Bar in the heart of the (World) Galleria,” Torrent said.

There’s a cocktail bar, a stage, and plenty of “comfortable nooks” to sit and enjoy the music.

The ship also includes a retro-themed clubhouse and is scheduled to make its U.S. debut after entering service on MSC World Asia in 2026. “Think of a top-down remodel of the Box Bar and Sportsplex at MSC World America,” Trent said.

“This means we will feature a Lego family zone, bumper cars, basketball, roller skates, classic tabletop games and more,” she added. Like its predecessor, World America, World Atlantic has seven distinct districts, and the former felt firmly like a family-friendly ship when we boarded it in April. Kids can play on parts of the ship while parents relax by the pool, or all parents can gather together and have fun together.

Additional details about the new space are not yet available, but World Atlantic will also feature a number of familiar spaces and attractions. They include:

The harbor will feature a “cliffhanger,” a ride that allows guests to jump off the side of the ship (we tried it at World America and the view was worth the stomach ache).

Where does MSC World Atlantic sail?

The ship will sail seven-night itineraries in the Eastern and Western Caribbean starting November 13, 2027. Ports of call include Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Costa Rica and Cozumel, Mexico. and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the line’s private island in the Bahamas.

Trent said the cruise line wants to make the “best move forward” with Port Canaveral.

“This is a very large and important market, not only for us at MSC, but also for the industry,” she said. “This is a very fast-growing market. And, you know, it’s also a drive-up market. So we’re attracting guests and engaging with travel agents throughout the region.”

See our sister ship MSC World America below.

How much does MSC World Atlantic cost?

Cruises on the ship start at $762 per person, including tax, for two people. MSC fares include accommodation, many meals, entertainment and more.

Cracker Barrel reveals impact of logo controversy

0

play

Cracker Barrel’s CEO said the chain is working to rebuild customer trust after a logo controversy earlier this year caused sales to drop in the quarter.

During a quarterly earnings call with investors on Dec. 9, Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Fels Masino acknowledged that the past few months have been “difficult” for the chain.

“While many guests are enjoying the improved dining and guest experience, there is certainly still much work to do to regain the trust of guests who have been slow to return,” she said.

Cracker Barrel announced that its sales for the quarter ending Aug. 1 to Oct. 31 were down 5.7% compared to the same period last year.

The country store and restaurant chain faced backlash from many customers when it announced a rebrand in August that included a change to its so-called Oldtimer logo. A few days later, the company reversed course and announced that it would not change its logo after all.

Cracker Barrel is grappling with ‘brand reputation issues,’ CEO says

During an hour-long conference call with investors, Masino acknowledged that Cracker Barrel has recently faced “intense scrutiny of our brand.”

“We are grappling with a brand reputation issue that requires rebuilding trust with each and every guest,” she said.

The company is focused on returning to its roots by bringing guest favorite items back to the menu, including campfire meals, Uncle Hershel’s Breakfast, and chicken and rice. Masino said some behind-the-scenes staff, including managers, kitchen production staff and grill cooks, were also retrained in October on “core classic” recipes and holiday recipes.

“We have a little bit of a brand opportunity right now. We need to rebrand and rebuild trust, and we have a sales opportunity. So we’re working on both,” she said.

Cracker Barrel logo controversy: What happened?

On August 19th, Cracker Barrel unveiled a new, simplified logo. It continued with the company’s classic gold and brown color palette, but removed the figure of a man sitting next to a wooden barrel.

Some customers criticized the logo change as unattractive. President Donald Trump chimed in, writing in a post on Truth Social that the chain could get “free publicity” if it reverted to its old logo.

On August 26, the same day as President Trump’s first post, Cracker Barrel announced that it would be removing its new logo and reverting to “Old Timer.”

“Thank you to our guests for sharing their voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we did,” the company said in a statement. “Our new logo will be retired and ‘Oldtimer’ will remain.”

Cracker Barrel subsequently announced that it would not proceed with plans to remodel the restaurant to make it more modern, and ended its partnership with the company, which had provided advice on the logo and restaurant design.

After overwhelming Democratic victories in several elections this year, Republicans are facing the prospect of a blue wave in the 2026 midterm elections. President Trump, who has also faced complaints that his economic stimulus hasn’t been enough, defended his record Tuesday night in the Poconos, the first of a series of rallies planned ahead of the midterm elections.

But in Miami, the mayoral candidate he supported lost to a Democrat who won the mayor’s race for the first time in nearly 30 years. So how do voters feel about Trump’s job performance? Here’s what you need to know about his approval ratings in key states.

President Trump’s approval rating turns negative in two Republican-leaning states

Trump has a net approval rating in 22 states, according to Morning Consult, which compiles polls over three months to examine state-level data on registered voters. The December 5th update has two fewer surface conditions compared to the previous month’s update.

Ohio and Iowa, considered Republican strongholds in the 2024 election, were two states where Trump lost ground with voters, according to Morning Consult. The pollster also found that Trump’s disapproval ratings rose to their highest levels during his second term in 2024 battleground states Arizona (51%), Georgia (50%), Michigan and North Carolina (52% each), and Wisconsin (54%). His approval ratings are negative in all battleground states.

USA Football scouts talent ahead of flag football’s Olympic debut

0

play

  • Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
  • USA Football holds talent identification camps across the country to identify potential Olympians.
  • Current national team members and interested NFL players must go through an eligibility process to make the Olympic roster.
  • Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, with significant increases in participation among women and girls, but lacks an established pipeline of elite athletes.

SPRING, Texas — Callie Brownson tugged on the brim of her black USA Football hat and looked out at the dozens of Olympic hopefuls kneeling at her feet on the grass field of a suburban recreational sports complex.

Brownson explained that over the next few hours, she and other coaches will closely monitor players’ performance in practice and interactions with teammates to determine who has a chance to represent the United States when flag football makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

“We’re also looking for people who embrace those three words,” Brownson said.

Flag football, colloquially known as “flag,” is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, gaining traction primarily among women and girls. But Flag still doesn’t have an established athlete pathway to rival the long-standing Olympic sport, which boasts a vast network of youth clubs, college teams and powerful professional leagues.

In the run-up to the Los Angeles Games, officials with USA Football, the national governing body for tackle and flag football, are tapping the country’s untapped potential by holding regional talent camps for adults and children ages 11 to 17.

Brownson is leading these efforts in his role as senior director of high performance and national team operations for USA Football. She is no stranger to breaking new ground.

Brownson, a former wide receivers assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns, is the first woman to coach an NFL position group in a regular season game and the first woman to coach full-time in NCAA Division I college football at Dartmouth. She also coached the U.S. women’s tackle football team to the 2022 World Championship, and as a player won two world gold medals with the national tackle team in 2013 and 2017.

“I never imagined when I was coaching as a player, but I still can’t imagine that the word ‘football’ would be used at the Olympics,” Brownson said. “I think it’s a really great moment.”

USA Football reaches Olympic moment and looks to the future

USA Football’s mission is to ensure that flag football lives on beyond the moment. The talent search camp, to be held Dec. 7 in Spring, about an hour north of Houston, is the fourth of 12 camps scheduled through next spring. During the afternoon adult session, 80 players, 60 women and 20 men, showed up to lace up their cleats and perform combine tests, one-on-one drills, five-on-five drills and scrimmages.

Before camp began, Brownson asked the group a question. “Who has ever dreamed of standing on the medal podium?” Every athlete raised their hand.

Although the Olympic flag football 10-man roster will not be determined until 2028, the 2026 calendar year is critical to USA Football’s preparations. Athletes participating in the talent search camp are competing for an invitation to the trials in March. A series of national team training camps are then scheduled for next spring and summer.

From there, USA Football will select two players to compete in the 12-man men’s and women’s national teams for the 2026 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Championships in Germany next August, with the top three teams automatically qualifying for the Olympics.

USA Football doesn’t start from scratch. Both the American men’s and women’s national flag teams are world-class powerhouses. The men have won five consecutive world championships, and the women have won the past three world championships. In the 2025 IFAF World Rankings, the U.S. men’s team ranks first, and the U.S. women’s team ranks second after Mexico.

However, Brownson believes that expanding the roster to bring in new blood is paramount to the program’s success and longevity.

“We’ve put together an Olympic-worthy program, not just to survive 2026, so instead of waiting until we pick a team in 2028, we start that process now and say, ‘Okay, we need to get into that mindset now,'” Brownson said. “Everyone needs to prepare as if it were the Olympics right now.”

NFL teams voted in May to allow NFL players to participate in flag football in the Olympics, and while Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons have expressed interest, there is no guarantee they will make the team. USA Football has full authority over roster selection, and NFL players must go through an eligibility process, but Brownson said both organizations are still working out the details of that process, which she thought is “constantly evolving.”

And what about the current members of the reigning world champion U.S. men’s and women’s national teams? They also need to earn a spot on the Olympic roster, which is perfectly fine, said Amber Clark-Robinson, a two-time gold medalist who plays as a defensive back and wide receiver.

“You have to get the best no matter what,” Clark-Robinson said. “Who knows, I might not be there. At the end of the day, the goal is the gold medal. And if you don’t fit that mold, there’s no need for hard emotions. Especially as a competitor, you have to understand that sometimes it’s not your time. So I think that might sway you a little bit, but at the end of the day you have to respect the process.”

Building an Olympic pipeline for flag football

Fans watching the battle for the Olympic flag will be watching a game indistinguishable from the NFL games that regularly grace their screens, although there are important differences.

Flag football is a non-contact 5-on-5 game played on a field half the size of a tackle football field. As a result, flagging is much faster than tackling and is more about technique than physicality.

Other unique features: Flag has no special teams, only offense and defense. The quarterback cannot run without first being handed off, but he can receive a pass. That means there could be multiple quarterbacks depending on the play. Seven yards from the ball is also the designated blitzer with an unobstructed path to the quarterback. Lateral passes are allowed, but blocking and screening are not.

Clark-Robinson played three seasons as a tackle football with the Atlanta Steam of the Legends Football League before pivoting to flag after the league was shut down due to the pandemic. The transition wasn’t as smooth as she expected.

“It was tough,” Clark Robinson said. “I couldn’t pull the flag to save my life. I was making so much contact. A lot of people called me a ‘wrecking ball’ (because I wasn’t trying to hit it), but I was just being physical. So I definitely had to flip a switch to get back on track.”

Sunday’s camp in Texas drew athletes from as far away as Illinois, and included athletes with experience in football, track and field, soccer, basketball and lacrosse.

While experience is thought to be a plus when evaluating players, USA Football also targets what it calls “elite athlete talent transfer,” or players who have played other sports at the collegiate level or above. Clark Robinson was a state champion in high school basketball and a collegiate track and field athlete. Brownson said basketball players adapt well to flag football because of the similar physicality and pace.

The testing portion of the Talent ID camp included drills designed to emphasize translatable skills, such as the 5-10-5 shuttle drill, which forces athletes to change direction within short distances, and exercises such as the 20-yard dash and broad jump to measure athleticism.

They then moved on to individual flag-specific drills that assess a player’s ability to avoid flag pulls, run routes, and throw accurate passes. The final component was a scrimmage to see how the athletes perform in a game setting.

“How we assess and evaluate them is crawling, walking, running,” Brownson said.

Participation in flag football increases rapidly with support from women and girls

On an adjacent field, boys and girls as young as kindergarteners in colorful uniforms were playing flag football in a local league. USA Football wants organizations like this to be the foundation for the continued development of the sport.

From 2015 to 2024, Flag participation among children ages 6 to 17 increased by 37%, according to USA Football’s analysis of the Physical Activity Council’s Annual Participation Survey data.

Women and girls are driving growth at the high school and college levels. Sixteen states have recognized flag football for high school girls as a varsity sport, and 17 other states and the District of Columbia have their own pilot programs. At the collegiate level, the NAIA offers women’s flag football scholarships and eligibility for invitations to the sport. The NCAA is scheduled to vote next month on whether to add flags to emerging sports programs for women in all three divisions as a step toward eventual championship status.

“I think there was always interest, but they just didn’t have the space to do it,” Clark-Robinson said. “I think more girls are attracted to it because they’re like, ‘Hey, there are girls like me here. I thought I was the only one, but no, there are 100 other girls in my area.'”

USA Football wants to capitalize on that interest and continue to provide opportunities. National Team Development Program Director Darrell “DK” Taylor said USA Football works with local club teams, NFL flag programs and universities to find players and coaches to be part of the national team feeder system. Top performers at the Youth Talent Identification Camp will earn invitations to USA Football’s annual Select Bowl, a precursor to Junior National Team selection.

“Our goal is to discover every possible way to identify talented players in order to have them as part of the national team development program, so we can make sure we keep an eye on them so they can continue to develop to one day become part of the national team,” Taylor said.

Taylor said NFL markets generally have the most robust flag football infrastructure, and each USA Football recruiting camp is co-hosted with a local NFL team.

The Houston Texans expanded their girls flag football program to more than 80 high schools across Texas this year. Earlier this month, the New York Jets donated $1 million to the Eastern College Athletic Conference to help launch a 15-team women’s collegiate flag league in 2026.

High youth participation rates have a trickle-up effect, and athletes who have increased access to the flag at a younger age may perform at a higher level, enriching the sport’s talent pool.

Clark-Robinson is in her fourth year as head coach of the women’s flag team at Saint Mary’s University, an NAIA school in Leavenworth, Kansas. She said she is only now starting to see the college athletes who competed in flag events in high school. As far as she’s concerned, the sooner she starts, the better.

“You can tell the difference between these 14-year-olds and 13-year-olds because they’ve been playing for four or five years now,” Clark-Robinson said, pointing to the field where a youth talent camp had just concluded. “And when they get to college, they’ll have 10 years of experience there before they step on the football field.”

If USA Football’s efforts to expand its reach are successful, the Los Angeles tournament could be just the beginning for the flag.

“Winning in 2028 is important, but unless we create a structured pathway and provide as many opportunities as possible, there is no future beyond 2028,” Brownson said.

Clark-Robinson said the Olympics were a great opportunity for the flag to be widely exposed and to rewire misconceptions about the sport.

“I’m excited that people are actually taking it seriously and understanding that this flag is competitive and exciting to watch. This isn’t just a ‘powderpuff’ sport,” Clark-Robinson said. “Come on, get on. Don’t wait.”

Polar vortex forecast says some of the coldest air on Earth will head toward the United States

0

This cold snap will be relatively short-lived, with a return to more typical winter temperatures likely by late December.

play

Are you ready for a serious cold?

Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue said in a Dec. 9 post on X that the most extreme cold air on Earth will roll into the central and eastern United States “like a wrecking ball” this weekend.

Maue called it “a giant chunk of the textbook polar vortex of western Canada’s cold.”

“The coldest to coldest temperatures on the entire planet will blanket the central and eastern United States over the weekend and into early next week,” Judah Cohen, a research scientist and climatologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said in an email to USA TODAY.

“It also looks like next week the most widespread and persistent area of below-normal temperatures around the world will extend from Alaska to the eastern United States,” he said.

But, good news for those who hate frigid weather, this cold snap could be relatively short-lived. Forecasts predict a return to more typical winter temperatures later this month and into the new year as the polar vortex retreats north and La Niña conditions become more pronounced once again.

How cold will it get?

In Chicago, for example, wind chills “could reach 20 degrees or below at some point this weekend,” the National Weather Service said. The Dakotas could see even colder winds approaching 45 degrees below zero.

The Bureau of Meteorology says winds this low can cause frostbite on exposed skin within 10 minutes.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures in many places will be as much as 30 degrees colder than the seasonal average.

It’s cold because of the polar vortex

The blast of cold air comes from the polar vortex. A polar vortex is a large upper-level low-pressure area or circulation that typically exists above the Arctic Circle. When this storm is strong, it tends to trap the coldest air in the northern hemisphere over the poles.

“However, if the cold air weakens or extends, the frigid air could move southward,” AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in an online forecast.

A pulse or “lobe” of the polar vortex could wind its way south over the United States, and that’s what will happen this week, Maue said.

AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok told USA TODAY that this kind of on-off-on-off behavior is not uncommon due to disturbances in the polar vortex, where “waves” or “lobes” swirl and descend on the United States, bringing temporary cold winds.

He said this particular leaf should last until “the 18th or 19th of the month.”

“We think we could see two to three more severe cold snaps across much of the Midwest and East from Dec. 10 to Dec. 19,” Pastelok said. “There is a chance of frost or freezing late next week south of central Florida.”

When will the United States come out of the cold?

Experts predict that the vortex will then retreat towards the North Pole for some time.

“We’re seeing a shift in patterns globally, with some moderation in temperatures in late December and January (in the U.S.),” Pastelok said.

Cohen agreed, saying, “I believe that the entire cycle of weak or turbulent polar vortices that began at the end of November will be over by the end of next week…Clearly the polar vortex is strengthening, and it seems inevitable to me that the weather will be milder for a period of time in the east-central United States.”

“A more normal La Niña pattern”

As the polar vortex recedes later this month, U.S. winter weather will become more dependent on La Niña, a natural climate troublemaker, Pastelok said.

“This should facilitate a return to a more normal La Niña pattern,” he said.

Using La Niña as a key guide, the Climate Prediction Center’s winter forecast says a warmer-than-normal winter is most likely for the southern United States, California, and much of the East Coast and Florida. Colder-than-average conditions are expected across the Pacific Northwest and upper Midwest.

Wendy’s joins quarter-zip trend with ‘quartership’ deal

Wendy’s is jumping on the quarter-zip trend with its “quartership” deal.

“That’s right. We’re sophisticated, we’re grown-ups, we’re cleaning up our resumes. It’s all about Quarterships right now,” Wendy’s said in an email to USA TODAY. This isn’t the first time the chain has tapped into a trend. They recently launched the deal as an ode to the trending “6-7” phrase.

For the “Quartership” deal, customers can order a 25-cent soft drink in any size when they make a purchase using the offer found in the Wendy’s app. The deal begins on December 8th and is available until December 14th.

The fast food chain said the deal was “tailored to the quarter-zip style icon.” A quarter zip is part of knitwear, not a tailored garment.

The company partnered with Jason Gimafi to launch the “Quarter Zip Movement” in his Nov. 5 Tik Tok video. “Wendy’s is officially part of the Quarter Zip movement,” Zimafi said in a promotional video posted Dec. 8.

USA TODAY reached out to Zimafi for comment but did not receive a response as of late Dec. 9.

Quarter zips become a fashion statement for Gen Z

The quarter zip has become a symbol of aspiration among Gen Z and late Millennials, with singer and rapper T-Pain posting a photo of himself in a sweater style on Instagram with the caption, “401k and quarter zip.”

The Quarter Zip video, in which Zimafi and his friend Richard Miner wear the sweater and pass matcha drinks, has been viewed nearly 30 million times as of December 9th.

“We don’t do Nike technology or coffee. Here it’s straight quarter zips and matcha,” Zimafi says. “He (Minor) was talking about people wearing Nike technology to go out. I said to him, what are you doing? We’ve upgraded in life, we’re wearing glasses now, and now we’re wearing quarter zips.”

In an interview with ABC News on Nov. 23, Gyamfi emphasized that “men make clothes, but clothes don’t make men,” adding that it’s important for young men to recognize the unique feel and look that is associated with certain clothes.

“I’m not used to seeing people come to my hometown, a young Ghanaian man from the Bronx, drinking matcha and wearing quarter zips,” he added. “Broaden your horizons in this life, that’s the reason for Matcha.”

Pete Hegseth criticized President Trump’s military rhetoric in 2016.

  • Resurfaced comments show Pete Hegseth previously criticized Donald Trump’s comments about the military following potentially illegal orders.
  • Hegseth, now army chief, is currently under intense scrutiny for a deadly attack on an alleged drug ship.
  • Hegseth recently criticized a Democratic group that released a video instructing military personnel not to follow illegal orders.

Back when Pete Hegseth was a Fox News host and Donald Trump was a seemingly long-term presidential candidate, Hegseth warned about Trump’s rhetoric about the military not adhering to the law.

The resurfaced comments, first reported by CNN’s K-Files, come as the Trump administration faces increased scrutiny over attacks on alleged drug ships that killed dozens of people. Six Democratic members of Congress also released a controversial video in November telling U.S. military personnel not to obey illegal orders, without citing specific incidents.

Hegseth, who is currently the Secretary of the Army (and former Secretary of Defense), is a former Army National Guard officer who worked for Fox News from 2014 until he was appointed by President Trump to serve in his current role. He was highly critical of the Democrats who released the video, all of whom are former members of the military and intelligence agencies, calling them the “seditionary six.”

Back in the 2016 election, Mr. Trump caused controversy and even drew criticism from Mr. Hegseth when he suggested that the military would follow his orders, even when it involved illegal acts such as torture. Here’s what you need to know:

Hegseth: “Donald Trump often talks about Donald Trump”

In the 2016 Republican primary, Trump supported waterboarding and said the military would carry out his orders. According to NPR, multiple international organizations consider waterboarding to be illegal.

“When I tell them to do it, they do it,” he said. “That’s what leadership is all about.”

President Trump received significant backlash for his position and later walked back his position, saying he did not intend to require the military to disobey the law. Mr. Hegseth discussed Mr. Trump’s remarks on Megyn Kelly’s show on Fox News the following day, as video archives show.

“Typical President Trump: talkative, very little substance. He talked about a tough game,” Hegseth said. “He’s a tough guy in the armchair.”

Hegseth said that while it is unlikely that President Trump will be able to change international law on war crimes, it is still dangerous for a potential commander-in-chief to say he supports the torture and killing of terrorists’ families.

“What happens if people comply or don’t comply with that order? It’s not clear that Donald Trump will support them,” Hegseth said. “Donald Trump often says Donald Trump, so you can’t do that. If you just say it without changing the law, you’re creating even more ambiguity.”

Video of Mr. Hegseth’s lecture in April 2016 was also widely shared on X. In it, he said, “Soldiers will not obey illegal orders from their commander-in-chief.”

Colorado Democratic Rep. Jason Crow, who appeared in the controversial video, shared the video with the caption, “What’s changed, Pete? Our Secretary of Defense is unqualified and dishonest.”

Pentagon spokesman Kingsley Wilson said the Democratic video was “designed to sow distrust and confusion in our military.”

“As Secretary Hegseth recently stated, and as a civilian before taking office, the military already has clear procedures for dealing with unlawful orders,” Wilson said. “The orders given to our military under President Trump are lawful.”

Boat strike puts Hegseth under scrutiny

The Trump administration has come under intense scrutiny for attacks on drug smuggling ships that killed more than 80 people. They say the strikes are aimed at stopping drug imports from Venezuela, and President Trump has suggested that ground strikes may be imminent. In one case at the center of the current controversy, a follow-up attack killed two survivors clinging to the wreckage.

Hegseth supported the second attack, but said he did not order it himself and criticized an earlier Washington Post report that said he had given instructions to “kill everyone.”

“Just as President Trump always supports us, we always support commanders in making decisions in difficult situations, and we have done so in this and all of these attacks,” Hegseth said on Dec. 2. Trump also signaled his support for Hegseth during the meeting.

President Trump initially said he had no problem releasing the video of the second attack, but on December 8, he denied supporting the release of the video and said it was up to Hegseth.

The Trump administration announced it would launch an investigation into Congressional Democrats who argued that the military can and must refuse illegal orders.

Report says Nancy Mace uses profanity against TSA officers at Charleston Airport

play

The South Carolina gubernatorial candidate recently came under fire after authorities said he unleashed a barrage of profanities at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, leaving airport workers “visibly shaken.”

Rep. Nancy Mace, who represents the state’s 1st Congressional District, which covers part of Charleston, said police turned a “minor blunder” into a “showcase,” according to the conclusions TSA officials documented in a 10-page report from the Charleston International Police Department.

Mace, 48, became the first Republican woman elected to Congress from South Carolina in 2021. She criticized President Donald Trump over the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, and has since become one of his closest allies.

Mace, 48, began campaigning for governor on August 4th.

The 10-page investigation, first reported by the Washington Post, was written by Airport Police Chief James A. Woods to Charleston Regional Aviation Authority Director Elliot Summey and included affidavits from multiple TSA officers who witnessed the incident.

The event was held on October 30th during this year’s federal government shutdown. Mace claimed it was one of “repeated security violations” that allegedly jeopardized his safety at Charleston International Airport, according to the documents.

The report does not elaborate on the profanity allegedly used.

Mace’s Office: “Issues that actually matter”

Mace’s office released the following statement to news station WCBD-TV:

“Congressman Mace appreciates this clear exoneration and is campaigning on issues that actually matter to South Carolinians: affordability and law and order.”

USA TODAY independently reached out to Mace’s office.

“Continuous failure to follow established procedures”

One witness reported Mace abusing the officer and complaining about the wait time, and two other witnesses reported Mace using profanity and yelling, according to the report. Witnesses said they did not know whether she was yelling at airport staff or someone on the phone.

“While it is clear that we bear some responsibility for misleading Congressman Mace about the color of his car, it is equally clear that his failure to follow established procedures at the checkpoint, and a minor miscommunication over the color of his car, turned this issue into a disaster for our employees and airport staff,” the report said.

Inside the strategies of companies that win with AI

0

While many companies are still figuring out how to use AI in a steady and practical way, a small group is already starting to make headway. A new study from NTT Data outlines strategies that show how these “AI leaders” are differentiating themselves through strong planning, solid decision-making, and disciplined approaches to building and using AI across their organizations.

The findings come from a survey of 2,567 senior executives from 35 countries and 15 industries. Only 15% of organizations met the criteria to be considered an AI leader. These companies share several characteristics, including a clear direction on where AI fits into their business, a solid operating model, and consistent follow-through. They also reported higher revenue growth and higher profit margins than other companies surveyed.

Hiroshi Sasaki, President and CEO of NTT Data Group, put it succinctly: “AI accountability now belongs to the boardroom and requires a company-wide agenda. Our research shows that a small group of AI leaders are already leveraging AI to differentiate, grow, and reinvent the way humans and machines create value.”

The strategy behind a powerful AI plan

One of the most obvious differences between leaders and other leaders is how they approach strategy. For these companies, AI is not a side project or a tool built into their existing operations. They treat it as a core driver of growth and adjust their plans to fit that view.

A big advantage for these leaders is how closely they connect AI to their business goals. This alignment allows you to move faster and stay focused, resulting in stronger financial results. It also focuses on a few high-value areas of the business rather than spreading resources too thin. Redesigning your entire workflow around AI can create more value than just making small improvements in scattered parts of your organization.

The report describes this as a type of flywheel. In other words, early investment leads to early wins, which then encourages further investment. Over time, this cycle becomes self-reinforcing. Leaders are also rebuilding critical applications to incorporate AI, rather than adding basic AI capabilities to older systems. This approach helps you recognize deeper impacts and prepare your organization for long-term benefits.

How do leaders put plans into action?

A good plan only works when backed by strong execution. AI leaders are distinguished by the foundations they build on, how they support their employees, and how they drive adoption across their organizations.

These companies are investing in secure, scalable systems that can support large-scale AI workloads. In some cases, migrate or localize infrastructure to support civilian or sovereign AI needs. We’re also working on removing bottlenecks in our systems so our teams can move without obstacles.

Rather than using AI to replace employees, leaders use it to help experienced employees do more high-value work. This “expert-first” approach allows teams to make their own decisions while letting AI handle complex or time-consuming tasks.

AI leaders are also focused on adoption as a long-term transformational effort. They are treating this as a company-wide shift, supported by clear communication and structured change management. This reduces backlash and promotes stable use of AI at all levels.

Governance is also a big difference. Leading organizations will centralize AI oversight, give clear responsibility to senior positions such as the chief AI officer, and create processes that balance innovation and risk. These systems allow us to scale AI with more confidence.

Partnerships also play an important role. Leading companies often bring in outside experts and are open to arrangements that tie results to shared success. This allows you to move faster while keeping your goal in mind.

Abhijit Dubey, CEO and CAIO of NTT DATA, Inc., summarized the path forward: “Once AI and business strategy are aligned, the single most effective action is to select one or two domains that offer disproportionate value and redesign them end-to-end with AI. Supporting this focused, end-to-end approach with strong governance, modern infrastructure, and trusted partners is how today’s AI leaders are turning pilots into profits and leading the market.”

What’s the latest on President Trump’s White House Ballroom? Here’s what we know

0

The White House submits the plan this month, and the National Capital Planning Commission is expected to consider the proposal early next year.

play

WASHINGTON – Architectural plans for the new White House ballroom, which President Donald Trump described as “beautiful and spectacular,” are finally ready for prime time, months after the project was officially announced.

Will Scharf, the Trump-appointed chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission, said on Dec. 4 that the White House would submit a plan for review this month. The commission, which oversees the development of federal property in the Washington, D.C., area, was not consulted when the East Building was demolished in October to make way for a banquet hall.

The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 requires a review of projects that affect historic buildings, and excludes the White House, Supreme Court building, and U.S. Capitol.

Contrary to tradition, the White House chose to forego submitting plans for demolition of the East Tower. President Trump’s White House insists the commission has jurisdiction only over construction, not the demolition of federal buildings. Under previous administrations, even minor renovations or changes to buildings such as sheds went through a review process.

The project came under severe criticism from former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, as well as preservationists, when the entire east wing was demolished without prior notice to make way for the ballroom on October 20th.

Carol Quillen, president of the National Trust for Preservation, said Trump’s project would be 90,000 square feet of new construction and “will dwarf the White House itself” at 55,000 square feet, adding that “(the addition) could permanently disrupt the White House’s carefully balanced classical design with its two small, low east and west wings.”

President Trump said the project he is leading will take many years, writing in Truth Social earlier this year: “This is something that has been needed and wanted in the White House for more than 150 years, something that no other president has had the ability to do. But I can do it, and as long as I do it, I’m going to do it right.”

Here’s a summary of where construction currently stands on the $300 million ballroom.

Has construction already begun on the White House ballroom?

Pictures of an excavator parked on the east side of the White House are posted everywhere. After all, they contributed to the downfall of the East Wing.

Part of the White House grounds has been converted into a construction zone, and construction on the new building has not yet begun, although President Trump recently said first lady Melania Trump was bothered by the sound of pile drivers.

White House officials said the deafening sounds were the result of ongoing demolition work. The White House says construction will begin once the project is approved by the NCPC, the only planning agency authorized to review construction. Experts point to this as a loophole in federal law. Although the committee can make recommendations, it has no explicit power to reject projects.

The committee meets monthly, meaning if a plan is submitted this month, it should be on the agenda by early next year, an NCPC spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Looking at the bigger picture, President Trump has said he wants to complete the banquet hall construction project by the end of his term in January 2029.

Will the banquet hall be larger than originally proposed?

When first proposed in July, Trump’s ballroom was priced at $200 million. Now it’s $300 million.

The White House also announced that the banquet hall would have a capacity of 650 people, but the president later said it could host closer to 1,000 people.

In an October post on Truth Social, President Trump explained that the price increase was due to “doubling the size and providing the highest quality finishes and interiors.”

“Also, column SPAN has been significantly increased for viewing purposes. As my job always is, we are actually on budget and ahead of schedule,” Trump wrote. “It turned out to be much bigger and more beautiful than originally planned.”

Asked to explain Trump’s remarks, a White House spokesperson said venue capacity could change based on the layout of the event being hosted. For example, a seated event with tables and chairs can be very different from a standing-room-only event that can theoretically accommodate twice as many people.

Who is the lead architect for the ballroom project?

Trump likes to say that his background as a real estate developer uniquely positions him to do what he does best. Still, he has relied on experts to do the difficult work.

Architect James McCreary II was originally brought in by Trump as lead architect in July with a splashy announcement and a rendering of the gilded, cavernous ballroom.

But that relationship appeared to rift last month over McCreary’s recommendation for “restraint” over concerns that the ballroom could “dwarf” the 55,000-square-foot executive mansion, The Washington Post reported.

White House press secretary Davis Engle told USA TODAY that McCreary will remain as a consultant, but a new Washington, D.C.-based architecture firm, Shalom Baranes, has been hired to lead the project. The company helped modernize and restore the Treasury Department’s main building adjacent to the White House.
