Taylor Swift’s biggest moments from ‘The End of an Era’ documentary series

play

Taylor Swift is sitting on a couch backstage, sobbing.

She opened the show wearing a sequined jacket and leotard, outfits familiar to the millions of fans who saw her on her Elas tour, and is set to dazzle London’s Wembley Stadium for the first of five sold-out shows.

But she just personally met with the family of a young man who was stabbed and injured at her music-themed dance class in Southport, England, a few weeks ago.

As Swift covers her face and collects tears, her mother, Andrea, tries to comfort her. Swift knows the show must go on and plans to compartmentalize her emotions for the next three and a half hours of her marathon concert.

It’s one of many amazing, unfiltered moments in Swift’s six-part documentary, The End of an Era, available on Disney+. The first two episodes will be screened by a small number of media outlets in New York earlier in the week and distributed on December 12th, with two more episodes to be distributed every Friday until December 26th.

Swift’s record-breaking tour, which she planned two years before it opened in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, was a movement, a cultural touchstone, and a shocker that transformed countries’ economies, boosted tourism, and inspired camaraderie among disciples.

The Elas Tour isn’t likely to be repeated anytime soon, even for Swift, who achieved billionaire status through unyielding focus and physical endurance born of her desire to “serve her fans.”

Her global uproar deserves this internal analysis. As intimate as it is to watch Swift take a bath in her hotel suite after the show, with her cat Benjamin Button peering into the tub to remove her makeup, it’s equally rewarding to learn about the dancers, production team, band members, choreographers, background singers, and the mammoth task of building up and tearing down a small city 149 times over 18 months.

“When something works like this, there’s bound to be a lot of magic and mystery that happens,” Swift said at the preview.

Here are some highlights from the first two episodes of Swift’s magical and mystical exploits.

Travis Kelsey to appear in Taylor Swift’s documentary ‘The End of an Era’?

As evidenced by the trailer for “The End of an Era,” fans of The Engaged Couple who search the movie for signs of the towering tight end will likely see him at some point. However, early on, they only shared a few sweet phone conversations, with Swift excitedly responding to her lover’s calls with “Baby!”

As she tells him about her day, the two summarize the similarities in their respective jobs.

“I have songs to remember, you have plays to remember. You have (Kansas City Chiefs) coach (Andy) Reid and I have my mom,” Swift says with a laugh. While praising and encouraging Swift, Kelce joked, “Some of you are on IV vitamins, but I understand this conversation.”

Taylor Swift doesn’t hide fear after thwarting terrorist attack in Vienna

In August 2024, Swift canceled three concerts at the Ernst Happelstadion after local authorities uncovered a plot to mass murder concertgoers.

The show was supposed to be her first in Austria, but it was the penultimate date of her European tour, which ends in London a week later.

Swift was visibly – understandably – rattled as she lay barefoot on a sofa backstage before her first show at Wembley, marking her return to the stage after her near-tragedy in Vienna.

She worries about her fans and whether her worries will affect her performance.

As she squats down on the hydraulic lift, Swift’s face is clouded with anxiety. A lift momentarily lifts her from the safety of the stage below into the view of 90,000 people.

After three and a half hours, she walked off stage and yelled to everyone within earshot, “I’m back!” She quickly called Kelce before collapsing into a waiting SUV, exhausted and sweaty.

The “Tortured Poets Department” segment was like creating a new tour

Never one to do anything by halves, Swift knew she would have to change her stage show to include “The Tortured Poets Department” when she released her new album in the middle of The Elus Tour.

During a supposed vacation from March to May 2024, Swift and her staff worked in a secret rehearsal facility to create new staging, dance moves, costumes, and vocal arrangements, which was the exact opposite of a typical vacation.

At Swift’s closing show in London in August 2024, three months after announcing the new sequence, she invited, “Florida!!!” I ended up performing the song with my partner Florence Welch at Wembley Stadium.

Once again, new set pieces and choreography were designed, Welch learned dance moves, took part in a game of trying out a hydraulic lift for the first time, and had fun.

Taylor Swift loved ‘Bonus Day’

Not many bosses would be as happy as Swift was when she gave everyone on her team a bonus check.

Approach: If a tour’s revenue increases, those who take the trip will receive a bonus.

But in typical Swiftian flair, she gifted the group with a handwritten note complete with a wax seal. Although the amount of the bonus was revealed, the facial expressions, tears, and hugs suggested that Swift’s rumored generosity was very real.

Falcons vs. Buccaneers winners and losers include Kyle Pitts, Panthers

0

play

  • The Atlanta Falcons made a field goal on the final play, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-28.
  • Tampa Bay’s loss knocked them out of first place in the NFC South, and the Carolina Panthers took over the top spot.
  • Several Falcons players had career-best or season-best performances, including Kyle Pitts and Kirk Cousins.
  • Both teams wore old-fashioned uniforms, with the Bucks wearing “creamsicle” jerseys and the Falcons wearing 1966 black jerseys.

A great game of football unfolded on Thursday night…and by the end of the fourth quarter, the quality of the contest was also quite appealing – keep reading as we explain.

Overall, the Atlanta Falcons made a field goal on the final play of the night, overcoming a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-28 and knocking the Bucks out of first place in the NFC South. The Buccaneers have lost five of their past six games since their Week 9 bye, dropping to ninth place in the conference, but their prospects of winning their fifth straight division title remain largely intact.

It was a night where the winners and losers went beyond the final result. They are:

winner

Kyle Pitts free agent outlook

Pitts, who was drafted No. 4 overall in 2021, the earliest ever for a tight end, hasn’t exactly lived up to those lofty expectations during his five NFL seasons, but his instability as a quarterback during his tenure with the Falcons certainly hasn’t helped. But he had a career night Thursday with 11 receptions, 166 yards and three TDs, all career highs. Pitts, who is set to become a free agent early next year, certainly could have once again proven his talent on the national stage and reignited his vision of what kind of impact player he could be in the right situation.

Bijan Robinson’s Fantasy Owners

Fantasy football playoffs have begun in most leagues, and the Falcons’ tailback was probably a top-three pick in almost every league. And while a fumble in the third quarter was a minor blemish, Robinson ended up with eight receptions, 175 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. That statistic should satisfy owners across the country who aren’t paying him a penny.

kirk cousins

Atlanta’s 37-year-old quarterback had arguably his best game of the season, passing for 373 yards and three TDs, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter and nailing the game-winning field goal drive in the final two minutes. Whether or not he’s a member of this organization in 2026 like Pitts, Cousins delivered a performance that suggests to the rest of the league that he has better football left in him.

Spectacular throwback uniform

The Bucks, who are entering their 50th NFL season, wore “creamsicle” jerseys for the first time this season. The Falcons, who are in the midst of their 60th NFL season, no longer used black jerseys and red helmets since their first year in 1966. It was a rare game where both teams were allowed to wear colored jerseys, and it was a pleasing visual aesthetic. What’s even more remarkable is that this was the first time that the longtime rivals faced each other in a match from this uniform era. More please.

bucks pirate ship

Much of Raymond James Stadium was decorated in Florida oranges, aka “creamsicles” to capitalize on the throwback vibe, but that wasn’t the case with the pirate ship moored in “Buccaneer Cove” behind the north end zone. Instead, the mast was decorated with Christmas lights for a nice holiday touch.

carolina panthers

Tampa Bay’s latest loss puts them back in first place in the NFC South at 7-6. Still, Thursday night’s result was essentially ancillary for the Panthers, who haven’t played since a 31-28 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 30. If Carolina wins those two games against the Bucs in Weeks 16 and 18, it will win the division regardless of those teams’ other performance.

Zane Gonzalez

Atlanta’s third kicker of the season, a 43-yarder, won the game. The last time Gonzalez kicked Raymond James as a member of the Washington Commanders in January, he also made a field goal on the final play to end the Bucks’ 2024 season in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris

Atlanta’s general manager and head coach each seem to be finding themselves in an increasingly warm position, considering the Falcons were eliminated from playoff contention for the eighth consecutive season over the weekend. But credit should be given to Morris, who is just in his second year on the job, for getting the team ready for road games in a short period of time and effectively playing as a spoiler. Fontenot, who has been in the job since 2021, may have a greater burden of proof to overcome given the unconventional personnel changes of recent years and owner Arthur Blank’s upcoming plans to re-evaluate football operations after the season. But anyway, overnight, this group reached its promising potential.

Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan

The Bucs had a full receiving corps on Thursday night, essentially for the first time this season. Evans, a likely future Hall of Famer, had a team-high six catches for 132 yards in his first game since Oct. 20, when he suffered a concussion and fractured collarbone in a loss to Detroit. McMillan, who had 37 catches (8 TDs) as a rookie last year, debuted in 2025 after sustaining a serious back injury during the preseason. He had two catches for 38 yards. The challenge may be to find a rhythm, considering Chris Godwin has only been back for a few weeks, but the role of rookie Emeka Egbuka, who has carried much of the receiving load so far, is bound to change as well.

loser

tampa bay offensive line

LT Tristan Wirfs is back after missing Sunday’s loss to New Orleans, but a battered team is still searching for the right combination — especially on a night when QB Baker Mayfield absorbed a season-high five sacks while spending most of the run game in neutral.

sloppy falcons

Atlanta committed 19 penalties (125 yards), the most in a single game in its 60-year history, and the most on a team in a single game in the 2025 season.

Los Angeles Rams

Had Atlanta, owner of the Falcons’ 2026 first-round pick, lost again, LA’s chances of finishing in the top five would have increased. ah.

baker, bowles, backs

Tampa Bay seems to have no end to the tailwinds of QB Baker Mayfield and coach Todd Bowles, who held a press conference full of expletives after the game. And the team has most of its best players back, but it’s playing its worst football at the worst time. Yet, like the Panthers, Tampa Bay is still in control of its own destiny, with two wins over Carolina guaranteeing a fifth straight division title.

Microsoft Prompts fixes an issue where AI prompts could not be delivered

0

Microsoft believes it can fix the issue where AI prompts appear, responses are off-topic, and the cycle repeats.

This inefficiency wastes resources. “The trial-and-error loop is unpredictable and discouraging,” and wastes time that could be productive. Knowledge workers spend more time managing the interactions themselves than understanding what they want to learn.

Microsoft released Promptions, a UI framework designed to address this friction by replacing vague natural language requests with precise, dynamic interface controls. This open-source tool provides a way to standardize the way employees interact with large-scale language models (LLMs), moving from unstructured chats to guided, reliable workflows.

bottleneck of understanding

While public attention often focuses on AI that generates text and images, a large part of its use in enterprises involves understanding – asking AI to explain, clarify, or educate. This distinction is very important for internal tools.

Consider a formula in a spreadsheet. One user might want a quick syntax breakdown, another might want a debugging guide, and another might want an explanation suitable for teaching colleagues. Depending on the user’s role, expertise, and goals, the same formula may require completely different explanations.

Current chat interfaces rarely capture this intent effectively. Users often find that the way they phrase their questions doesn’t match the level of detail that the AI requires. “Getting clarity on what customers really want requires crafting long, carefully worded prompts that can be tedious to create,” Microsoft explains.

Prompts acts as a middleware layer that solves this familiar problem with AI prompts. Instead of forcing users to enter long specifications, the system analyzes intent and conversation history to generate clickable options in real-time, including explanation length, tone, and specific areas of focus.

Efficiency vs. complexity

Microsoft researchers tested this approach by comparing static controls with a new dynamic system. The findings of this study provide a realistic view of how such tools work in real-world environments.

Participants consistently reported that dynamic controls made it easier to express task details without having to repeatedly rephrase the prompt. This reduces prompt engineering effort and allows users to focus on understanding the content rather than managing how phrases work. The system encouraged participants to think more carefully about their goals by presenting options such as “learning objectives” and “answer format.”

But adoption comes with trade-offs. Although participants valued adaptability, they also found the system difficult to interpret. Some had difficulty predicting how their chosen option would affect their response. I noticed that the control appears opaque because the effect is only apparent when the output is displayed.

This emphasizes the need for balance. Dynamic interfaces can streamline complex tasks, but can introduce a learning curve that requires user adaptation to the connections between checkboxes and final output.

Prompt: Solution to fix AI prompt?

Promptions is designed to be lightweight, acting as a middleware layer between the user and the underlying language model.

The architecture consists of two main components.

  • Optional module: Review user prompts and conversation history to generate relevant UI elements.
  • Chat module: Incorporate these selections to generate an AI response.

Of particular note to security teams is that “no data needs to be saved between sessions, making it easier to implement.” This stateless design reduces data governance concerns typically associated with complex AI overlays.

Moving from “instant engineering” to “instant selection” provides a path to more consistent AI output across the organization. By implementing a UI framework that guides user intent, technology leaders can reduce variation in AI responses and improve employee efficiency.

Success depends on calibration. Usability challenges remain regarding how dynamic options affect AI output and whether to manage the complexity of multiple controls. Leaders should view this as a design pattern to test within their internal developer platforms and support tools, rather than as a complete solution for fixing the results of AI prompts.

Diddy’s videographer tarnishes his name amid confusion over Netflix doc

0

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ videographer Michael O’Barrys is trying to clear his name as Combs’ team claims a new Netflix documentary series about Diddy’s rise and fall uses footage that was “stolen” from before his arrest.

play

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ videographer has joined Netflix, leading to a spat between Combs over 50 Cent’s new documentary series about the rapper’s rise and fall.

After Combs’ camp condemned Sean Combs: The Reckoning as a “disgraceful hit,” Michael O’Barrys released a statement to Rolling Stone on December 10th clearing his name.

“The video in question was not released by me or by anyone authorized to handle Sean Combs’ material,” O’Barrys, who filmed for the Project Profiling Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and has worked for the rapper since 2019, told the outlet.

His statement continued: “This incident had nothing to do with a pay dispute or contract dispute. The actions of those involved reflect a lack of integrity that all storytellers should uphold. Shooting footage intended for our project to advance a story that is not ours is unethical and unacceptable.”

O’Barry’s comments are the latest in recent communications between Netflix, which released the 50 Cent-produced series, and Combs’ family and legal team, alleging the content perpetuates “lies” about Combs’ upbringing and uses “stolen footage not authorized for release.”

The four-part series, directed by Alexandria Stapleton, debuted on December 2nd and delves into Combs’ rise (and subsequent fall) in the music industry. It combines interviews and never-before-seen footage from the days before his arrest on federal sex trafficking charges in Manhattan on September 16, 2024.

Mr. Combs often kept his camera rolling to document his life and work. He had a videographer follow him while in New York City, where he was being investigated by federal prosecutors for sex crimes. He is currently serving 50 months in prison for that crime.

At one point, the videographer filmed federal agents on the rooftop across from the hotel room. In another scene, Combs is seen berating one of his attorneys, prominent criminal defense attorney Mark Agnifilo.

What does Diddy’s team say about 50 Cent’s Netflix series?

The day before the documentary series debuted on Netflix, a teaser trailer for the series premiered on Good Morning America, and a representative for Combs issued a statement condemning the streamer’s actions as “unlawful.”

“Netflix’s so-called ‘documentary’ is a shameful hit. Today’s GMA teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that it was not authorized to release. As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been collecting footage since he was 19 years old to tell his story in a unique way. Netflix’s exploitation of that work is fundamentally unfair and illegal,” the Dec. 2 statement read.

“Netflix is clearly desperate to ignore the truth and sensationalize every moment of Mr. Combs’ life in order to capitalize on the never-ending media frenzy. If Netflix cared about the truth and Mr. Combs’ legal rights, they would not cut private footage out of context, such as conversations with his lawyer that were never intended for public viewing.”

Combs’ team also questioned the origins of the footage included in the series.

“No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party,” the statement said. “It is equally surprising that Netflix has ceded creative control to Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, a longtime adversary who has a personal vendetta and has spent far too much time smearing Mr. Combs.”

The rap mogul’s team also issued a second cease-and-desist letter to Netflix, which issued an initial cease-and-desist letter when the documentary was first announced.

Diddy’s mother speaks out against Netflix docuseries

Combs’ mother, Janice Combs, also spoke out against the docuseries in a statement shared with USA TODAY on Dec. 8 through her son’s representative.

“These inaccuracies regarding my son Sean’s upbringing and family life were intentionally made to mislead viewers and further damage his reputation,” said Janice Combs. “Sean was a loyal son who always made sure I had access to care, carefully managed my medical care, and provided financial support. I am calling on him to publicly retract these distorted, false, and misleading statements.”

She specifically criticized her portrayal as an “abusive parent” and claims by Bad Boy Entertainment co-founder Kirk Burroughs that her son slapped her during a 1991 exchange about the City College of New York stampede that killed nine people between the ages of 15 and 28.

What does Netflix say about ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’?

In a statement to Netflix’s official news site Tudum, Stapleton said the footage “came to us. We obtained it legally and have the necessary rights.”

She continued, “One thing about Sean Combs is that he’s constantly filming himself, and it’s been an obsession for decades. We’ve also reached out to Sean Combs’ legal team multiple times for interviews and comment, but we haven’t heard back.”

In a separate statement from a Netflix spokesperson shared with USA TODAY on Dec. 2, the streamer doubled down on that sentiment. “The claims being made about ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’ are false. This project has no connection to any past conversations between Sean Combs and Netflix,” the company said in a statement.

“The footage of Combs leading up to his indictment and arrest was legally obtained. This is not a hit film or an act of retaliation. Curtis Jackson is an executive producer but has no creative control. No one received any participation fees.”

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, 50 Cent said, “It’s nothing personal.”

“If I don’t say anything, the hip-hop (community) will interpret his actions as okay because no one else is speaking out,” he added.

Stapleton said, “The show doesn’t fully incorporate the perspective of people who don’t like Sean. We weren’t just trying to cover the highlights and sordid details. The real purpose was to tell the story.”

In cold regions, the battery range of EVs decreases significantly. These tips will help.

0

EVs don’t produce much heat while driving, which is usually a good thing, but becomes a problem when temperatures drop.

play

As temperatures drop, EV owners face the physical challenge of reduced battery performance and increased charging times.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, EVs’ fuel economy at 20 degrees can be 8% lower than at 75 degrees, and range can be reduced by about 12%. Turning on interior heating reduces range by 41%.

The reason: Cold weather slows down the chemical process that electric car batteries use to store energy.

EVs are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. According to Experian’s Automotive Market Trends Report, electric vehicles accounted for 8.2% of all new car registrations in the third quarter of 2024. Another 11.5% were hybrid electric/gasoline vehicles. From 2021 onwards, the proportion of gasoline vehicle registrations has decreased by 10%.

To be fair, this isn’t just an electric car issue. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gas-powered cars are about 15 percent less fuel efficient at 20 degrees than at 77 degrees. Short trips of 3-4 miles can see up to a 24% drop. For this reason, in the coldest regions of the United States, many people use electric block heaters or battery pads to warm their engines.

However, charging an EV takes longer than filling up a gas tank, so range becomes important in cold climates. So while cars and trucks don’t perform as well in the freezing cold as they do in the summer, electric vehicles are even worse off. Here’s why:

Why does my EV charge slower when it’s cold?

As the temperature drops, the electrochemical process that the battery uses to charge slows down. To charge, a car must first warm up the battery, which takes time and energy. Therefore, when it gets cold, it takes longer to charge the battery.

The ideal operating temperature for an EV battery is approximately 68 to 86 degrees, depending on the model.

Batteries are charged when lithium ions stored at the cathode return to the anode. Cold charging conditions reduce the efficiency with which ions flow through the anode, reducing battery capacity.

Heating an EV consumes a lot of battery power. why?

EVs don’t produce much heat while operating, which is usually a good thing, but problems arise when temperatures drop.

Gasoline engines produce a large amount of residual heat, which can be used to heat a room. According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, only about 25 percent of the energy per gallon of gasoline is used to run a vehicle. The rest is waste heat.

Electric cars don’t have gasoline-burning engines, and about 89% of their energy goes to turning the wheels, according to Yale University’s Climate Connections.

According to Cold Climate Expert Efficiency Maine, it’s more energy efficient to use heated seats to keep EVs warm than to blow hot air into the cabin.

How to get the best performance from your EV in cold environments

1. Consider purchasing an EV equipped with heat pump technology

New EVs are increasingly equipped with heat pump technology as a standard feature, increasing efficiency in cold climates. According to MoveElectric, in EVs, heat pumps draw in cold air from outside, compress it, and use the heat from the condenser to raise the temperature in the battery or inside the vehicle. This can significantly increase range that could otherwise be lost in cold weather.

2. Preheat the battery

Most current EVs automatically preheat the battery when it recognizes that it is heading to the charger. This allows it to charge quickly and efficiently when plugged in. If you’re charging at home, consider plugging it in right away while the vehicle is still warm.

Ford recommends that EV owners leave their vehicles plugged in if parked in the cold for long periods of time. When plugged in, the battery temperature remains above freezing.

3. Park indoors if possible

This keeps the battery warm so you don’t have to use as much energy to warm it up later. A car cover can also be helpful.

4. Heat up your car before driving

If it’s very cold, consider turning on your car’s heater while charging. According to AAA, using a heater at 20 degrees reduces range by 41% and fuel economy by 39%. If you want to warm up the interior of your vehicle while it’s charging, you don’t need to use battery power to get it to the right temperature.

If there is no such opportunity, seat heaters consume less energy than cabin heaters.

5. Make sure the tire pressure is correct.

Underfilled tires increase rolling resistance and require more energy for the vehicle to move forward. Check your tires or owner’s manual for optimal inflation pressures.

6. Driving with eco mode on

Most EVs offer this, and the amount of energy required is kept to a minimum at the cost of some performance.

7. Don’t let the battery level fall below 20%

Charging requires sufficient temperature, so depending on how cold it is, you may not be able to charge even if it is plugged into an electrical outlet.

Trump Justice Department’s retaliatory prosecution of Comey and James continues to fail

0

The Justice Department’s attempt to prosecute critics of President Donald Trump has failed dramatically, surprising legal experts and former prosecutors.

play

Indictment dismissed. Two grand juries declined to bring new charges. A judge blocked key evidence from being used in a new case. In trying to prosecute President Donald Trump’s chief target, the Justice Department faced failures on a scale rarely seen in federal prosecutors.

The most dramatic recent setback was a second federal grand jury declining to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on Dec. 11, after an earlier grand jury rejected the Justice Department’s indictment last week. Abby Rowell, a prominent lawyer representing James, called the repeated failures “unprecedented.”

Shortly before that, earlier charges against Mr. James and former FBI Director James Comey were dropped, with a judge ruling that the Justice Department could not use evidence that was key to the original indictment against Mr. Comey – at least for now.

The latest developments compound the difficulties Trump administration lawyers have faced in trying to prosecute Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. In a Sept. 20 social media post, the president called for the prosecution of both men and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

“This is embarrassing,” former federal prosecutor Neema Rahmani told USA TODAY. “The last thing you want to do as a prosecutor is to be on the defensive, and that’s exactly what’s happening here.”

The Justice Department’s investigation into Schiff has stalled, NBC News reported, citing four anonymous sources familiar with the matter. According to multiple media reports, federal investigators are currently looking into how Schiff’s investigation was handled.

The Justice Department declined to comment on its track record in litigation against President Trump’s targets.

Charges were dismissed after mounting legal challenges

On September 25, a federal grand jury indicted Comey on charges of lying to Congress and obstructing Congress during his testimony before a Senate committee on September 30, 2020. A separate federal grand jury indicted Mr. James on October 9 on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.

Trump’s vendetta against them goes back years. In 2017, he fired Comey as FBI director who was investigating possible contacts between the 2016 Trump campaign and the Russian government. Since then, Comey has become an outspoken critic of Trump. James filed a civil fraud lawsuit in 2022 accusing Trump of engaging in fraud over his years as a real estate mogul.

Earlier this year, longtime prosecutors, including the interim federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, who was appointed after Trump took office in January, reportedly concluded that the evidence in both cases was too weak to prosecute.

President Trump later posted on social media that he had fired the lawyer and recommended that Attorney General Pam Bondi replace him with Lindsey Harrigan, a former personal attorney with no experience as a prosecutor. Mr. Bondi took that action within days, and Mr. Harrigan secured indictments against both Mr. Comey and Mr. James.

The hurdles for the lawsuit were high almost from the beginning.

Mr. Comey and Mr. James each filed a motion arguing that the charges were motivated by Mr. Trump’s personal animosity and were therefore unconstitutional. James claimed the government had taken “outrageous” actions that violated the Constitution, including firing career prosecutors and ethics officials who were interfering with the prosecution. Comey said his case stemmed from grand jury misconduct, including the failure to present a final indictment to the grand jury, and therefore should be dismissed.

Judge William Fitzpatrick, who was appointed to the job by the other justices, said there was evidence of a “disturbing pattern of serious investigative errors” in the Comey case. He said the government may have violated Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures, including when it obtained the evidence.

In late November, Judge Cameron McGowan Currie, appointed by Mr. Clinton, concluded that Mr. Harrigan was illegally appointed and dismissed all charges against Mr. Comey and Mr. James.

As a result, the charges didn’t hold much weight in court, even though they made life harder for Comey and James.

“So far, I don’t think the federal Justice Department has had much success other than harassment, and that’s probably the point,” Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond, told USA TODAY.

Multiple attempts to re-indict James have failed.

This was not the end of the Justice Department’s setbacks in the case against Comey and James.

Although Bondi vowed to appeal the firing, the department quickly took a different approach, seeking to move on from the issue in which Harrigan secured the original charges by seeking new charges against James.

The indictment process before a federal grand jury is highly advantageous to the prosecution. They are present, but the defense team is not. They just need to convince a majority of the jury to indict. It is enough for them to show that their claim is probably true. And the standard for presenting evidence before a jury is lower than at a trial.

In contrast, a conviction at trial requires a jury to unanimously conclude that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

However, on December 4, a federal grand jury rejected prosecutors’ request to reindict James. Former prosecutors say this suggests the evidence against James is weak.

Former federal prosecutor Mitchell Epner estimates he sought indictments more than 100 times during his three years with the New Jersey State Attorney’s Office, but never got one. He said he was aware of only one unsuccessful prosecution of thousands of prosecutions across his office during that period.

Epner told USA TODAY that presenting the case to two different grand juries in one week and not indicting him both times was “disgraceful and a repudiation of the prosecution.”

Rahmani estimates that while he was a federal prosecutor, he obtained grand jury indictments for about 100 defendants, and that the grand jury had never failed to indict him.

“If you can’t convince a grand jury, there’s no way you can convince a trial jury,” he said.

Barbara McQuaid, a former prosecutor for the Eastern District of Michigan under President Barack Obama, said in an email that prosecutors’ ethical obligations prohibit them from filing criminal charges when there is a high probability that a conviction will not be obtained at trial.

“This is the kind of garbage you would expect when prosecutors are chosen based on loyalty rather than experience or integrity,” McQuaid said.

Justice Department blocks evidence from Comey for new indictment

The Justice Department has also indicated that it may seek to prosecute Comey again. In a Dec. 9 court filing, prosecutors asked Judge Kohler Kotelly to lift a temporary block on Mr. Harrigan’s right to use the same evidence he used in his initial indictment of Mr. Comey.

Koller-Kotely ruled on Dec. 6 that the government’s retention of evidence first obtained during a separate investigation in 2017 probably amounted to an unconstitutional search or seizure.

Koller-Kotely could issue a new ruling to lift or extend the temporary block when it expires on December 12.

Even if the Justice Department were able to overcome that challenge, it would still face additional legal hurdles regarding whether the deadline to prosecute Comey has passed.

The first charges against him were handed down just five days before the five-year statutory deadline for prosecution.

Prosecutors may argue that federal law typically gives the government an additional six months to pursue new charges after federal charges are dismissed. But Comey’s lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, suggested the defense would disagree. In a statement after the first indictment was dismissed, he suggested that because the indictment was invalid, the six-month provision would not be triggered and that Comey could therefore not be re-indicted on the same charges.

“The Department of Justice and Harrigan himself, especially they have egg on their faces,” Rahmani said. “This is nothing short of a pretty massive failure by the Department of Justice in these cases.”

Michigan State’s letter after firing Sherone Moore: A painful ‘betrayal’

“This behavior at the University of Michigan is absolutely unacceptable. There is nothing.”

play

Michigan State interim president Domenico Grasso sent a letter to the school’s students and faculty on Thursday, Dec. 11 regarding the ongoing investigation into former football coach Sherrone Moore.

This is the first comment from the university since announcing Moore’s termination on Wednesday, Dec. 10, but does not mention Moore’s detention and arrest that occurred later that day.

Moore was fired after a university investigation found “credible evidence” that he had “an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Mr. Grasso said in his letter that Mr. Moore’s employment was immediately terminated upon presentation of the findings of the investigation on Dec. 10.

“This behavior by the University of Michigan will never be tolerated. None of it will be tolerated,” Grasso wrote. “I have been in close contact with the board and we are united in doing the right thing.

“This betrayal by Coach Moore is painful to many in our community, first and foremost to those directly involved in this situation,” he added.

“All the facts here need to be known,” Professor Grasso said, adding that the university’s investigation into Moore continues. He encouraged anyone with information related to the investigation to contact university officials.

There was no mention of possible criminal charges against Moore or the outcome of the investigation. The former Wolverines coach was taken into police custody on Dec. 10 after the Pittsfield Township Police Department was dispatched to a residence “investigating an alleged assault” on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 4:10 p.m. ET (about 30 minutes after Michigan State announced his termination).

Mr. Moore was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail, where he remained in custody as of Thursday, December 11th at 7:00 PM ET. No information regarding the charges was available.

Mr. Moore is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Friday, December 12th.

15 Gifts Teen Car Enthusiasts Will Love This Year

0

Shopping for teenagers is never easy, but knowing that they’re obsessed with all things automotive makes it at least a little easier.

The auto industry has never encountered a merchandising opportunity it didn’t like, but beyond the obvious hats, polo shirts, and beach blankets, there’s a whole world of car and truck tie-ins that resonate with young people whose cerebellums have been soaked in high-octane ever since they first heard the roar of a V8 engine.

Here are 15 of the coolest, most interesting, and most rewarding gifts you can give to teenagers for any occasion, but especially for the holiday season.

lego technic car kit

LEGO’s Technic series is aimed at builders who want to go beyond the basics with sets that aim to more faithfully recreate the world around them. The list of automotive-themed LEGO Technic sets is endless, ranging from ultra-detailed replicas of the Ferrari FXX K and Bugatti Chiron supercars to more realistic models like the Ford Bronco from the Fast and Furious movies and Brian O’Connor’s Nissan Skyline. These are the perfect gift for LEGO kids who have moved on to the next stage of their lives. It also allows for customization by creative minds who want to see how much they can improve the design of an existing car.

Forza Horizon 5

The latest installment in the long-running Forza series isn’t a winner just because it’s available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. It also offers a great mix of traditional racing competition, vast open-world exploration, and a very comprehensive set of licensed vehicles that will satisfy both enthusiasts and those who just want to drive around at a more pedestrian fare. Add in off-road driving, extensive online play, and the ability to create your own tracks, and Forza Horizon 5 is the kind of game that will keep teens hooked, at least until the next game comes out.

game simulator cockpit

When you’re serious about your lap times, or at least appear to be serious, there’s nothing like a gaming sim cockpit that puts your steering wheel, pedals, and shifter where you need them, rather than relying on the buttons and D-pad on a console or PC game controller. If you get one with enough adjustability to accommodate all the upcoming growth in your teenager’s life, this is the kind of gift they can enjoy for years (at least until they get behind the wheel of their own car and start hitting autocross courses).

car mechanic simulator

If the teenager in your life is more interested in disassembling cars than racing them, you’re in luck, there are video games for them too. In Car Mechanic Simulator, players leverage unlimited parts and tools to repair, restore, and modify dozens of real-world vehicles while learning the fundamentals of how engines, suspensions, body panels, and electrical systems work together in both modern and classic automobiles. Part strategy game, part puzzle box (just like real-life car repair), this simulator is an easy way for young people to get hands-on digitally before tackling their first real car project.

DIY engine replica kit

If Technic isn’t detailed enough and your teenager is bored with online simulators (but you can’t afford to undertake a full-scale teardown and rebuild in your garage), engine replica kits are a great way to fill the gap. Whether you want to start simple with a lifted pushrod V8 from an original Ford Mustang or delve into the intricacies of a boxer flat-six design, these DIY kits provide hands-on engine assembly experience that reveals the secrets of the internal combustion engine, without the risk of skinning your knuckles. Most of these models are electrified and offer a complete experience that understands the hows and whys of internal combustion.

car model kit

The budding teenage car designer in your life may be more interested in sheet metal than engine blocks. That makes scale model kits a much more attractive proposition. For decades, these brightly colored boxes of carefully sorted plastic and metal parts have delighted those who want to see how every panel, pane of glass, and interior piece fits together. It’s also a great opportunity to customize to your heart’s content and create the car or truck you wish it had left the factory with (you can even paint it your favorite color). There are kits on the market for just about every car you can think of, including this John Wick 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. All you need to get started is a little modeling cement, a trimming knife, and spray paint.

mechanic tool kit

When model kits and simulators fall by the wayside and your shopping teen is itching to start turning real wrenches, it’s never a bad idea to give them the tools they need to get the job done. To ensure durability and avoid the frustration of unstable ratchets, pay a little extra and look for a trusted brand name like Craftsman or Dewalt when purchasing an entry-level maintenance tool set. If treated with respect, a well-equipped kit of metric and SAE gear can last a lifetime, just as it teaches lessons.

code scanner

Starting any modern auto repair often requires diagnosing exactly what the problem is. Deploy a reliable code scanner. This is an invaluable tool in the teenage mechanic’s arsenal, a tool that can not only read trouble codes to figure out the daily driver’s latest problems, but also reset check engine lights and often capture data that can be analyzed on the way to fully understanding how to set everything up properly. A scanner is an affordable gift for young car enthusiasts that will help them avoid having to go to the auto parts store or local repair shop every time a yellow icon lights up on their dashboard.

oil change gift card

Regular maintenance is essential to keep cars, especially older models, running, but daily drivers often end up poor when teenagers juggling part-time jobs and school have to share the limited amount of money they earn. Oil change gift cards that can be redeemed at either a local shop or a national chain are a great way to provide maintenance assistance to young drivers. It also ensures that those funds are not diverted from the all-important purpose of keeping you from having to hail a ride because a commuter train breaks down.

Fast & Furious 10 Movie Collection

Physical media is making a comeback, and there’s no better series to gift your teen professionals than the movie that gave us thousands of catchphrases (and poorly planned mods). All 10 films in the Fast and Furious series are available on both Blu-ray and 4K discs. This is more than enough nitrous action to indoctrinate the next generation into the world of Domenic Toretto, his family, and all the early 2000s aftermarket luxuries that existed in the early days of the Fast and Furious phenomenon. Let them live a quarter mile at a time in the safety of your home theater room.

car detailing kit

The world of car detailing can seem like a never-ending rabbit hole of cleaners, waxes, and polishes (and of course applicators and towels). Get your favorite teenager started on the spiral of keeping their car sparkling with a comprehensive starter kit from a reputable detailer like Chemical Guys. This cleaning gear assembly includes all the products you need to remove dirt and grime, as well as products to fix that clean, wet look after washing. It also comes with a bucket and foam blaster that can be used without a pressure washer, making it perfect for beginners.

Street Survival Teen Driving School

Let’s be honest about the current state of modern driver education. Young pilots are very often taught the bare minimum necessary to pass their license exams, which means they know the rules of the road, how to read signs, and how to park, but they are usually not taught what to do if they encounter an emergency on the road. Fortunately, at Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School, you can receive instruction from experienced professionals on how to deal with wet or snow-slick roads, what to do when a wild animal jumps in front of your car, how to safely deal with a skid or loss of traction, and more. It’s a smart investment that will pay off over a lifetime of safe driving, and it’s available nationwide.

Detailed information: tire rack street survival

drive recorder

The public roads can sometimes feel like the Wild West. Furthermore, the same goes for parking. By gifting your teen a dash cam, you can ease your own fears and give your insurance agent some breathing room. Continuously recording the world through the windshield might give young drivers pause before engaging in the kind of impulsive shenanigans that plagued all of us older drivers when we first got our licenses, but it’s also a useful tool in case someone tries to fender-bend an upset teen trying to dispute his version of events. Dash cams provide the ultimate “just the facts” when dealing with unexpected interactions on the road.

tile key finder

Losing your keys can be more than just a nuisance, especially for teenagers who are at risk of losing their after-school jobs or failing exams because they can’t get out the door and get into their cars on time. Tile key tracker uses Bluetooth technology to find your lost key ring within seconds. And we do it at a very affordable price. Available in a variety of colors, from discreet black and gray to look-at-me pink and purple, your child can decide whether they want to stand out or make a fashion statement.

inflatable pickup truck pool

In some cases, you should deliver gifts to car-loving teenagers, especially in the fun field. This simple inflatable pool turns your humble pickup truck into a portable summer hot spot, perfect for tailgating, summer picnics and parties, or just cooling off after school. This is a better idea than a homemade tarp-based pickup pool, trust us. After you splash all the water out of the back of this device in the first 10 feet of driving, you won’t have to worry about anyone trying to bathe you on the highway.

YouTube TV’s 2026 consumer movement means plans for sports, news content

0

With YouTube TV, subscribers will be able to choose from “more than 10 genre packages,” including ESPN’s sports plan, rather than a basic plan with more than 100 channels.

play

If you’ve been keeping an eye on YouTube TV or have already subscribed, you might want to be patient, as the video streaming service is expected to announce some new packages for consumers in early 2026, including one aimed at sports junkies.

YouTube TV, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., will debut 10 new YouTube TV plans that will cover programming from a variety of genres, the service announced on Dec. 10. YouTube TV has not announced new pricing or listed all the specific programming packages it will offer in the future.

However, the streaming service has revealed that its upcoming YouTube TV Sports plans will be included in the new programming package. The sports plan includes all ESPN networks, including ESPN Unlimited, FS1, and NBC Sports Network. Subscribers will be able to add more programs, including NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone. Features include unlimited DVR, multi-view, key plays, and fantasy football views.

The Walt Disney Company, majority shareholder of YouTube TV and ESPN, on November 14 resolved a two-week programming dispute that resulted in ABC, ESPN and other Disney-owned channels being removed from YouTube TV. The new deal will now include select Disney-owned networks in various YouTube TV genre-specific packages, and Disney+ and Hulu bundles will now be included in some YouTube subscription packages.

Competitors such as DirecTV, Fubo, and Sling offer different programming tiers to consumers.

According to MoffettNathanson Research’s Dec. 8 Cord Cutting Monitor report, changes to YouTube TV will come as cord cutting continues, but at a slower pace. According to the company’s research, the number of pay-TV subscribers (subscribers to pay TV distributed by cable, satellite or phone companies) is estimated at 43.2 million, down 21% from two years ago. At the same time, the number of subscribers to streaming live TV services such as DirecTV, Fubo, Hulu Live TV, Sling and YouTube TV increased nearly 17% to about 21.6 million households, according to Moffett-Nathanson.

Some cable TV and streaming prices will be lowered.

But consumer concerns about price and affordability are causing some cord-cutters, as well as others, to abandon individual streaming services due to cost, a recent survey of 1,000 consumers conducted by data company Prolific for the technology site All About Cookies found.

Streaming services are trying to offer consumers more choice, including lower price points with commercials, while raising prices. Recent services that have increased subscription prices include NBC’s Peacock, as well as Disney+ and Hulu. And earlier this year, YouTube TV’s monthly price increased by $10 for a basic plan subscription to $82.99 per month.

What you need to know about YouTube TV

YouTube TV ($72.99 for the first three months, then $82.99 per month) includes more than 100 channels from local and national networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN, AMC, TNT, CNN, Fox News, and MS Now.

You can also add Showtime to networks like HBO Max, Starz, and Paramount+ with the Entertainment Plus package for $29.99 per month.

Christian Oestlien, YouTube’s vice president and head of subscriptions, said on the official YouTube blog on December 10 that subscribers will receive new programming options in early 2026.

“TV should be easy and give viewers more control over what they want to see,” he said. “Our goal is to give subscribers more options to customize their subscription. Whether they stick with the main YouTube TV plan with over 100 channels, choose a sports focus, a combination of sports and news, or a plan centered around family and entertainment content, subscribers will now be able to easily choose the plan that’s right for them.”

President Trump targets Indiana Republican leaders after redistricting plan fails

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says he hopes the top Republican in the Indiana Senate loses the next primary after the state rejected a pro-Trump congressional redistricting plan.

In a speech from the Oval Office on December 11, President Trump singled out Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore Roderick Bray, one of the 21 Republican senators who voted to reject the redistricting bill in the Republican-controlled Senate.

“He’s probably going to lose in the next primary,” Trump said. “I hope he does, because he did something very bad.”

Trump added: “I will definitely support anyone who tries to run against me.” Bray, who represents Indiana’s 37th Senate District, is seeking re-election in 2028.

The Indiana Senate’s 31-19 rejection of the redistricting bill marks a major setback for President Trump’s mid-decade gerrymandering strategy to keep Republicans in control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections. The bill would create two new Republican districts, giving Republicans control of all nine of the state’s congressional districts.

Nevertheless, Trump sought to downplay the results and minimize his involvement. Ahead of the vote, Trump publicly pressured Republicans to support the bill and even dispatched Vice President J.D. Vance to the Hoosier State.

“I wasn’t very engaged, which may have been a good thing,” Trump said, later adding, “I wasn’t very involved.”

Despite Republicans having a supermajority in the chamber, President Trump was unable to persuade enough of Indiana’s Republican senators to approve his redistricting plan. The 21 Republicans who voted against the bill outnumbered the 19 who voted for it.

President Trump ignited a national redistricting fight over the summer by persuading Republicans in Texas that they urgently needed to draw new congressional maps, even though there was no new census data to prompt such a move.

California voters then overwhelmingly approved a move to redraw the map, arguing that the measure was a way to negate Texas’ gains by adding five blue-leaning districts. Other states controlled by Republicans and Democrats have recently begun redistricting efforts.

“It’s a great place. I love the people. They love me. We won in landslides all three times. We got a tremendous turnout. We got a record turnout,” Trump said of Indiana, before returning to his disappointment with Republican senators who voted against the bill. “There’s no reason to do that. And the Democrats are making us do that.”

‘Mrs. ‘Meisel’ actor Wen Davies dies — what we know about the crash

play

On December 8, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” actor Wen Alton Davis died in a car accident in New York.

The 60-year-old man, who used the pronouns “they/them,” was struck by a car while walking in midtown Manhattan, police confirmed to USA TODAY on Dec. 10.

The New York City Police Department said in a statement that on Dec. 8, at approximately 8:45 p.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a person. The NYPD did not identify Davis as the victim, but confirmed that the pedestrian was struck as he was walking at the intersection of West 53rd Street and Broadway.

Here’s what we know about the actor’s tragic death.

How did Wen Davies die?

Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Unit determined that a black 2023 Cadillac XT6, driven by a 61-year-old man, struck Davis “near the south crosswalk of Broadway” as the driver was turning left.

Davis suffered “severe head and body trauma” and was taken to nearby Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

USA TODAY has reached out to Davis’ representatives for comment.

Has anyone been arrested in Wen Davis’ death?

Police said the 61-year-old driver who hit Davis with his car was unharmed and remained at the scene. His name has not been released.

The NYPD also said there have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

Wen Davis’ representative pays tribute to the actor

Davis’ agent, Jamie Harris, posted a touching tribute on Instagram on Wednesday, December 10th.

“No words yet, only (love),” Harris wrote alongside a photo of her and Davis. “Rest in peace, old friend. We will miss you forever.”

Who is Wen Davies?

A working actor with several titles, Davis often plays detectives and police officers, appearing as a police officer in a season 5 episode of Mrs. Maisel and as a police officer in the 2011 film Shame.

The “New Amsterdam” actor’s other credits include “Girls5Eva,” “Blindspot” and “American Odyssey.”

They lived in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, according to the NYPD.

Davis’ last Instagram post was four weeks ago on Veterans Day. “Happy Veterans Day to my dad, brother-in-law, and all other veterans!” they wrote in the caption.

Carvana stock rises more than 95% as more drivers buy cars online

Your next used car may be available through Carvana online shopping.

play

  • Carvana’s stock price is more than 11,000% above its 2023 low as of December 10, 2025.
  • This online used car retailer aims to make the car buying experience more transparent and convenient for drivers.

Carvana (NYSE: CVNA) stock has outperformed companies like Nvidia, Google, Apple, Tesla, and Meta in terms of annual gains.

The used car retailer’s stock is up more than 95% year-over-year as of Dec. 10, according to Yahoo Finance. It also soared 12% on Monday following its inclusion in the S&P 500 index. It traded as low as $4.05 per share in December 2023. The company’s stock price is currently up over 11,000% from its 2023 lows.

What is the secret to Carvana’s success, and what does its stock price say about how American drivers will buy used cars as we head into 2026?

Why is Carvana stock going up?

According to Reuters, the company attributed the large-scale resurgence to “tighter cost controls, debt reduction and a recovery in demand.” Carvana is focused on fundamentals and is trailing rival used car retailer CarMax in quarterly sales.

Carvana’s stock price is rising as retail traders and financial experts alike see a real opportunity for the company to disrupt the used car market. What does this mean for used car buyers and sellers?

How Carvana is changing the way Americans buy and sell cars

While there are many online used car marketplaces on the internet, Carvana’s end-to-end online platform solves several key pain points drivers may face when purchasing a car. Fixed pricing is a big cornerstone of Carvana’s business. The company offers transparent pricing and financing plans without the additional financial hassles that some used car dealers can grapple with deals.

Besides a streamlined purchasing process (essential for success), the company also offers home delivery services and a 7-day refund policy. Additionally, Carvana has an app that makes the car buying process even more user-friendly.

Carvana also allows drivers to buy and sell their cars by allowing them to enter most relevant information via the website or app. You can offer drivers fast offers and payments for used cars.

How to get the best results from Carvana Online Marketplace

Carvana may be a great tool for some drivers, but like any shopping experience, going in with an idea of what you’re looking for will speed up the process and give you the best results.

Online marketplaces and apps have filters to help narrow your search. If you already know your price range, mileage range, and vehicle segment, you can save time and have a more productive research and purchasing experience.

Selecting the year and specific make/model will make your search even faster. Referring to previous year’s ranking lists compiled by authoritative sites such as U.S. News & World Report can also help narrow down your used car search. Cross-referencing Carvana’s prices with Kelley Blue Book’s fair market value for a particular vehicle can help you determine if your pricing is reasonable.

Is there room for more growth for Carvana?

Carvana has had a great year in terms of share price growth. Its market value has reached $86.6 billion as of Monday’s share price, according to Forbes, more than the big three automakers General Motors, Stellantis and Ford.

Joseph Spak, an analyst at asset management firm UBS, believes Carvana’s used car sales market share could grow from 1.5% to 4% by 2030. Based on its current performance and trajectory, the company has the potential to change the car-buying experience for millions of U.S. drivers in the future.

President Trump grants Tina Peters ‘clemency’ but won’t let her out of prison

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has announced what amounts to a symbolic “pardon” for Tina Peters, a former Republican county clerk in Colorado who was jailed for accessing secure voting system data to prove a baseless conspiracy to deny the 2020 election.

President Trump announced his “pardon” for Peters in a Dec. 11 post on the X Show. But Peters, the only Trump supporter jailed on charges related to the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, was found guilty of state crimes. As president, Trump’s pardon power only applies to federal charges, so Peters will remain in prison and his conviction will be final.

“Democrats have relentlessly targeted Tina Peters. He is a patriot who simply wanted to make sure our elections were fair and honest,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Tina is in a Colorado prison for the ‘crime’ of demanding an honest election. Today, I am granting Tina a full pardon for her efforts to uncover voter fraud in the fraudulent 2020 presidential election!”

President Trump’s statement came after a federal judge on Dec. 8 rejected Peters’ bid to free Peters, 69, pending an appeal of his state conviction in 2024.

Peters, a former Colorado state clerk and recorder who denied that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election over Trump, was sentenced in October 2024 to nine years in prison on seven state charges related to tampering with election machines in Mesa County.

She was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public official, one count of criminal impersonation conspiracy, first-degree official misconduct and breach of duty, and failure to comply with the Colorado Secretary of State.

Peters was running for Colorado’s secretary of state at the time of the indictment, and the case garnered a lot of attention. Her campaign website now calls her a “political prisoner” and “whistleblower” who has been “forced into silence in defense of the truth.” Over the past year, “Free Tina Peters” has been a rallying cry for Trump and his supporters, who say Peters was prosecuted and wrongly sentenced.

State prosecutors said Peters and a deputy clerk conspired to turn off surveillance cameras in the room where Mesa County’s voting machines were stored, stole someone else’s identity and improperly granted access to outside activists.

Prosecutors said they later refused to turn over documents and records to state election officials investigating the possible violations, which they say occurred during a software update that state officials described as a secure “trusted build.”

Prosecutors said the deputy clerk pretended to hire an IT consultant and used people’s names and Social Security numbers to pass background checks and obtain security clearances and access badges. The badge allowed Conan Hayes, a former surfer who knew election denier and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, to enter the secure room where the voting machines were kept and take images of them and associated data.

Are women less ambitious than men? the internet is tilted

Are women really less ambitious than men?

This week, Lean In and McKinsey & Company highlighted the “ambition gap” in their annual study on women in the workplace. The study found that women and men at all levels are “equally committed” to their careers and motivated to do their best work. However, women lag behind men in wanting to reach the next rung on the career ladder, with 80% of women aiming for a promotion compared to 86% of men. A study of women in the workplace found that the gap widened significantly between entry-level and senior levels.

The idea of a difference in ambition was not well received on social media.

Women are not giving up on their ambitions. “They are simply opting out of a workplace tailored to the needs of men, where they have fewer responsibilities for caring for children and the elderly, can stay in the office for hours on end, can make last-minute business trips, and don’t have to shoulder the emotional or mental burdens of home,” writes Care Gap editor-in-chief Blessing Adesiyan.

“The gap is not an ambition,” she says. “The gaps are care, sponsorship, visibility, equity, flexibility, safety, and support.”

According to Adesiyan, here’s the real story behind LeanIn data: Women have fewer sponsors, less demanding jobs and promotions, are more penalized for remote and flexible work, are more likely to experience burnout, and have less job security.

“And we look back and ask why women aren’t ‘leaning in’ enough,” she wrote on LinkedIn.

“My ambitions didn’t shrink, but my bandwidth did.”

Life and career coach Andrea Bombino, who has been working with mothers for five years, said that in her own experience as a mother, lack of ambition has never been a reason to “pause, pivot, or change direction in your career.”

“What I have seen time and time again is that women are cornered by a system that makes work, health, and full participation in society nearly impossible without adequate support,” Bombino wrote on LinkedIn. “It was never about ambition. It was always about infrastructure, care and whether women were given the conditions to fully thrive.”

“The story of the ambition gap has always bothered me. As a working mother, my ambition hasn’t waned, but my bandwidth has diminished because I’m juggling two jobs,” writes recruiter Putri Adriani. “Unless we stop treating caregiving as a private problem for women to solve quietly, nothing will change.”

LeanIn blames ‘support gap’ with employers

Much of the data from the LeanIn study, the largest survey of women in the U.S. workplace, supports claims of a “support gap,” a lack of support for women in the workplace.

For example, nearly 25% of entry-level and senior-level women who are not interested in promotions said personal obligations made it difficult for them to take on additional work, compared to 15% of men.

Only about half of the companies surveyed said that career advancement for women is a top priority. Additionally, some employers do not provide support for career advancement, especially for women. This is part of a broader diversity, equity, and inclusion rollback spurred by President Donald Trump’s anti-DEI policies during his second term.

“If companies don’t do the right thing to support all of their employees, women will leave,” LeanIn founder and former Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg told Bloomberg.

Ambition gap? Depends on how you define it

The so-called “ambition gap” has become a burden considering the burdens women typically carry. What does it mean to be ambitious?

A survey released earlier this year by Women’s Network Chief and Harris Poll found that 86% of women in senior leadership positions are more ambitious today than they were five years ago. In a national survey that took a broader view of ambition, women ranked financial success, decision-making power, time and flexibility, and other aspects of ambition at the bottom of the list for job titles.

“An incredible 92% feel energized by their future professional growth, and 61% of senior women leaders believe they can reach their highest potential now or in the next five years,” the report states. “Women aren’t ‘quietly quitting’ their ambitions. They’re rejecting rules that don’t work for them and rewriting strategies that weren’t written for them.”

Disney and OpenAI deal lets you create videos with Mickey Mouse

Want to create short videos featuring Mickey Mouse, Disney Princesses, or Star Wars characters? Thanks to a deal between Disney and Open AI, you’ll soon be able to use Sora, an AI video creator.

play

As part of the Walt Disney Company’s $1 billion investment in OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, the entertainment giant will enable the use of Mickey Mouse and other Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters in unique videos created by artificial intelligence.

In addition to creating videos with OpenAI’s AI-powered video creator Sora, subscribers will be able to watch select Sora-generated videos on Disney+. Disney’s “fan-inspired videos” produced using Sora are expected to begin in early 2026, the companies announced on Thursday, December 11th.

As part of the three-year agreement, Disney will also use OpenAI’s applications to “build new products, tools, and experiences, including for Disney+,” and employees will use ChatGPT’s chatbots.

Disney’s deal with OpenAI is a major step toward an AI-driven future for the House of Mouse, and gives Disney fans unprecedented control over their beloved characters, along with copyright holder protections.

“The rapid advances in artificial intelligence are at an important time for our industry,” Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement announcing the deal. “Through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly expand the scope of generative AI storytelling, while respecting and protecting creators and their work.”

Disney’s deal with OpenAI coincides with Disney sending a cease-and-desist letter to Google alleging copyright infringement for allowing its works, including characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, to be used in AI-generated images and videos. “Google’s AI services are designed to take a free ride on Disney’s intellectual property,” the letter, dated Dec. 10, sent to Google’s lawyers, said, according to a copy obtained by USA TODAY.

The Disney acquisition is also a coup for OpenAI amid stock market volatility, as some worry that AI investment and optimism could spark a bubble reminiscent of the dot-com boom of the 1990s.

“This agreement demonstrates how AI companies and creative leaders can responsibly collaborate to foster innovation that benefits society, honor the importance of creativity, and help work reach vast new audiences,” Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said in a statement.

What is Sora? And how will Disney characters be involved?

Sora is an AI-powered video generator that lets you create new videos from text instructions using existing images and videos, including new images you upload. You can describe a scene and generate a 10-second vertical video with synchronized audio.

For now, you can follow Sora’s instructions to cast yourself and your approved friends in a video. But eventually you’ll be able to create videos starring Disney characters, including Disney princesses like Cinderella, Pixar characters like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., and even Marvel and Star Wars characters like Black Panther and Yoda.

In an interview with Altman on CNBC on Thursday, Dec. 11, Iger said consumers can create 30-second videos using the names and likenesses of about 200 characters, but not their voices.

The feature makes sense, Iger told CNBC. “We also think we’re in a time where almost anyone can be a creator of some sort, as consumption of short-form videos has increased significantly. And we’re seeing that in amazing ways on other platforms as well. And this is a real way for us as a company to give young viewers in particular the experience of engaging with our characters in new ways.”

Users of Sora’s video generator have an “unusual” demand for Disney characters, Altman told CNBC. Consumers will be able to participate in “Star Wars lightsaber battles” and create “a custom Buzz Lightyear birthday video for their kids,” he said. “I think this will be a pretty big issue for users. Then we can reevaluate from there,” he added.

The relationship between Disney and OpenAI will be beneficial for both companies and fun for consumers, Dan Ives, global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, told USA TODAY.

“This is all about integrating Sora into the Disney network and cross-selling ChatGPT,” he said. “This is a convergence of worlds, and a smart move by Disney to jump deep into the pool with OpenAI.”

How can I get Sora, OpenAI’s video generator?

The consumer version of the Sora app is available from Apple’s App Store, Google Play Store, and sora.com.

ChatGPT subscribers also have access to Sora. ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) have limited access to Sora 1 video generation. ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month) can create longer, higher-resolution Sora videos.

OpenAI also announced GPT-5.2 on Thursday, December 11, which includes advanced features in ChatGPT’s thinking, reasoning, and task solutions. According to OpenAI, approximately 800 million people use ChatGPT every week.

Ecstasy, Molly, and why MDMA party drugs are becoming so powerful

0

play

Since its rise to prominence on the party scene in the 1980s, ecstasy has become a staple of festival and rave culture. But the drug also carries far more risks now than it did back then, and some are sounding the alarm.

Dr. Leif Fenno, chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Addiction Psychiatry, says accurate data on how powerful ecstasy has become today is difficult to come by. That’s because there is a lot of variation from pill to pill. Still, he says, some studies suggest that the amount of MDMA, a synthetic psychoactive drug, in ecstasy has increased by about 50% over the past 15 years, so it’s definitely gotten more powerful overall.

“There is wide variation in the composition of individual tablets,” Fenno says. “Some tablets contain no MDMA at all, while others have concentrations two to three times the average tablet concentration.”

Today’s ecstasy is generally much more powerful. We need to talk about it.

Ecstasy began gaining prominence as a street drug in the 80s and peaked in the late 90s and early 2000s. In the 2010s, it was revived under the name moly, which is slang for “molecule.” This drug acts as both a stimulant and a hallucinogen.

The 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimates that 7.5 percent of Americans ages 12 and older have tried ecstasy at least once. At the time of the survey, an estimated 586,000 adults in the United States over the age of 18 had used MDMA in the past month.

Fenno said that while the actual chemical composition of MDMA hasn’t changed much over the years, the amount concentrated in ecstasy tablets has increased significantly. People who currently use Ecstasy or Molly are often unaware of how much MDMA they are actually ingesting.

“While the MDMA itself hasn’t changed, the amount of MDMA in each pill and the number of pills you take at once determines how ‘potent’ the dose is,” Fenno says.

Ecstasy, the truth about MDMA

Like any other illegal drug, using MDMA comes with significant risks.

“MDMA can be addictive for some people,” Fenno says. “There are also medical risks, including severe dehydration, overheating, electrolyte abnormalities, and kidney damage, especially when using high-dose tablets, prolonged dancing or exposure to heat, or when mixed with alcohol or other stimulants.”

Not to mention, some tablets are laced with additional substances, which can further exacerbate variability and potency. Those other substances could include caffeine, bath salts, amphetamines and fentanyl, Fenno said.

“MDMA is not manufactured in pristine pharmaceutical factories under controlled conditions,” he added. “It is manufactured in illegal makeshift laboratories, and the final product may contain impurities and may be mixed with other substances. There is no assumption that MDMA tablets or powders will contain the advertised amount of MDMA, or even no MDMA at all.”

The bottom line? There are always risks when it comes to street drugs. And you’ll never know exactly what you’re ingesting.

“The content is unpredictable,” Fenno said. “When using illegal substances, there are steps you can take to reduce but never eliminate the risk of harm: never use it alone, carry naloxone (the overdose drug) and know how to use it, call 911 immediately if you suspect an overdose, and use drug testing services and test strips if they are available in your area.”

Fiat announces introduction of “cute” small EV cruiser “Topolino” to the US

  • Stellantis introduces small EV “Topolino” to the US
  • The Topolino has a top speed of 30 km/h and is powered by a single electric motor that produces 8 horsepower.
  • If sold at the same price in Europe, the Topolino would cost about $11,500 in the United States.

Stellantis is bringing a little electric car to the U.S. market called the Topolino.

Topolino, which means “little mouse” in Italian, isn’t even technically a car. In the United States, it is likely to be classified as a low-speed vehicle. Less than 100 inches long, with 8 horsepower, 47 miles of range, and a small 5.5 kWh battery, the Topolino seems perfect for short urban trips, enclosed campuses, or cruising through quiet beach towns.

“It’s an escape for hotels and resorts,” said Stephanie Brinley, associate director of auto intelligence at S&P Global Mobility. “It’s a really small market.”

Although the Topolino is frequently displayed at car shows overseas and in the United States, the vehicle has never been sold in the United States. Fiat CEO Olivier Francois announced this week that the Topolino, which has been attracting attention at domestic car shows, will be coming to the United States.

“The Fiat Topolino is our small, fun and colorful car that is now ubiquitous in Europe, but it has also appeared in the United States several times over the past year, including at last month’s LA Auto Show, creating tremendous excitement among consumers,” Francois said in a news release. “We are pleased to share that we plan to bring the Fiat Topolino to the United States. Details will be announced next year.”

Brinley said he didn’t expect Fiat to make big sales with Topolino. And since the Topolino is a slow vehicle and not a proper car, it will not be factored into any analysis of the brand’s vehicle sales. But because they’re cute, Fiat may still be able to find a buyer despite their limited practicality, she said.

“Is there an opportunity for Fiat to sell a few of them because they’re adorable and cute? And there are probably some places where you could find a use for them. Yes,” Brinley said. “But it will remain a footnote in the market.”

Stellantis, the parent company of Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, has not announced when the vehicle will go on sale or how much it will cost. Stellantis sells Topolino in Europe for about 9,820 euros, or $11,500 (varies by country).

News of the Topolino’s U.S. introduction comes just days after President Donald Trump gushed about the future of small “light” vehicles in the country after a visit to Asia.

“When you go to Japan, which I just left, and you go to South Korea, Malaysia, and other countries, they have very small cars like the Volkswagen Beetle used to be,” President Trump said at a news conference last week while announcing plans to ease emissions standards for automakers. “They’re really cute because they’re so small.”

President Trump said he has “authorized” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to approve the production of light vehicles in the United States, but automakers are not prohibited from building light vehicles in the United States and there is no need to adjust the law to approve the vehicles.

Fiat spokeswoman Diane Morgan told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Topolino’s U.S. rollout has been planned for some time and is unrelated to President Trump’s desire to bring the small car to the United States.

Why is Trump threatening Venezuela?

0

play

President Donald Trump continues to increase pressure on Venezuela after the US military seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela and announced new sanctions against the country.

The Dec. 10 seizure is the latest in an escalation in the conflict between the U.S. president and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. President Trump has stepped up his calls for the Venezuelan president to step down, accusing the Maduro regime of drug trafficking and terrorism.

The White House said the administration plans to transport the tanker to a U.S. port and pick up the oil it is carrying. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt told reporters at a Dec. 11 press briefing that the oil tanker is currently in the process of being forfeited. It added that U.S. officials were questioning the crew and seizing evidence.

“There is a legal process to seizing that oil, and that legal process will be followed,” Levitt said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed on December 10 that the tanker was used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.

The Venezuelan government called President Trump’s position a “colonial threat” and accused the United States of “blatant theft” following the seizure of the tanker, Reuters reported. Officials also described the seizure as “an act of international piracy” and said they would condemn the incident before international organizations.

According to multiple media reports on December 11, the Trump administration has increased sanctions on the country, including sanctions on three of Maduro’s nephews and several other tankers that support the country’s rich oil supplies.

Why did the US seize a Venezuelan oil tanker?

On December 10, President Trump announced at a White House meeting that the United States had seized a Venezuelan oil tanker.

“In fact, this is the largest seizure ever. There are other things that are happening,” the president said. He later added: “I think the oil will be kept off the ship.”

At a White House briefing on Dec. 11, Levitt said the seizure of the oil tanker was an example of President Trump’s fulfillment of his campaign promise to stop illegal drugs from entering the country.

The spokesperson also said the Justice Department had obtained a warrant to seize a vessel that is part of Iran’s shadow fleet known for transporting black market sanctioned oil to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Three people familiar with the matter told USA TODAY that the cargo on board was owned by a businessman with ties to President Maduro and that the ship was destined for Cuba.

Who is Nicolas Maduro?

Venezuela is an oil-rich country, but its economy has collapsed in recent years, leading to widespread poverty and violence. The country faces international scrutiny over corruption allegations and an oppressive crackdown by the ruling government.

Maduro was the hand-picked successor to former socialist leader Hugo Chávez. President Maduro’s United Socialist Party, widely considered a left-wing dictatorship, has held elections deemed undemocratic.

After the 2024 Venezuelan elections, international observers and Venezuelan opposition leaders said Mr. Maduro had been completely defeated.

He remained in power.

Why is Trump talking about attacking Venezuela?

President Trump has accused Maduro of being a drug trafficker and sending him fentanyl, which has contributed to America’s opioid crisis, and has blamed the country for the wave of migrants.

Over the past few months, the regime has gradually tightened its stance toward the South American country, including deploying a major military buildup near the South American coast.

In August, the United States doubled its reward for information leading to Maduro’s capture to an unprecedented $50 million. The United States says he has ties to drug trafficking and criminal organizations.

In November, the State Department designated Mr. Maduro and other government officials as members of the foreign terrorist organization Cartel de los Soles. Experts told USA TODAY that the Cartel de los Soles is a loose, corrupt network and not a true drug-trafficking organization. Venezuela’s president has denied any link to the illegal drug trade.

The Justice Department indicted Maduro and other Venezuelan government officials in 2020 on drug trafficking and corruption charges.

What’s going on with the boat strike?

The seizure comes as the United States has spent months building up its military presence around Venezuela and repeatedly attacking boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean. The attack left dozens of people dead, including Venezuelans.

The regime says the attack targeted a suspected drug smuggling vessel from Venezuela, but critics say it is illegal and amounts to an extrajudicial assassination.

President Trump said his administration’s attacks on drug ships were aimed at stopping suspected Venezuelan traffickers. He also said he was targeting human traffickers.

Since September, the regime is known to have attacked around 20 ships in international waters, including the Caribbean, killing 83 people.

Venezuela’s government has repeatedly insisted that Trump’s actions are aimed at gaining access to the country’s lucrative oil and gas reserves.

Venezuela has the world’s largest share of crude oil reserves, according to data from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). According to Reuters, the company exported more than 900,000 barrels of oil per day last month.

Its main buyer is China.
