Most states are cutting their environmental budgets. What does that mean to you?

0

play

For months, the Trump administration has pushed to cut down on bureaucracy and help states protect the environment.

There’s just one problem. They may not be able to do it.

After adjusting for inflation, more than half of the nation’s states have cut their environmental budgets over the past 15 years, according to a report released Dec. 10 by the Environmental Conservation Project. Many more states have cut staff.

This could mean fewer inspectors at nearby power plants to protect the air you breathe. Increased response time to chemical spills. Your city has weak enforcement of drinking water permits. A patchwork of protections where some people live with strong environmental protections while others are left vulnerable.

“This actually means more American communities are at risk of exposure to industrial pollution,” Jen Duggan, the project’s executive director, told USA TODAY.

Just as federal environmental regulations have reached historic lows, many states are also making cuts, according to the Environmental Conservation Project. The nonprofit organization was founded by the former director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Civil Enforcement Division and aims to strengthen environmental protection.

The group’s report found that even in states where the industry is growing rapidly, budgets are shrinking. For example, in Texas, by far the largest oil-producing state and the second most populous state, the Environmental Agency’s budget was cut by a third.

In fiscal year 2025, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality received more than 9,000 complaints related to odor and water quality concerns. The agency responded to just 528 cases in five days, according to its latest enforcement report.

In Louisiana, a region with a high concentration of fossil fuel and petrochemical plants and disproportionately high cancer rates, government agency budgets were cut by a quarter. In the state, the state Department of Environmental Quality’s expedited processing program allows industry applicants to pay overtime for employees who process applications, which some advocates say creates a conflict of interest.

Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality spokeswoman Megan Molter said in a statement that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is “committed to the full protection of our environment.”

“To ensure we deliver on our core mission, we will continue to prioritize efficiency, modernization and strategic resource management,” Molter said.

North Carolina is a top pig producing state. In 2022 alone, 3.2 million tons of fertilizer will be generated, causing air and water pollution. The budget has also decreased.

After Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina in 2018, at least 50 compost lagoons spilled into nearby communities, Drew Ball, Southeast operations director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said in a briefing with reporters announcing the report.

“Many families today live with garbage in roadside gutters, contaminated wells with undrinkable water, and constant fear of what the next storm will bring to their yards,” Ball said. “However, the very agencies charged with protecting these families are facing increased strain due to fewer staff, lower budgets, and less political support.”

Meanwhile, California and Colorado were among the states that put more resources into their environmental agencies. California quadrupled its budget and Colorado doubled it.

Budget increases from growing states were greater than budget cuts from shrinking states. While some of these communities may be more protected, pollution does not follow state boundaries.

For example, in a 2020 study, researchers found that nearly half of premature deaths related to air quality were attributable to out-of-state emissions.

Similarly, the network of rivers that connect the country like veins can carry excess fertilizer from farms in the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico, creating drinking water problems and toxic algae blooms along the way.

The EPA said in an emailed statement in response to the report that it is well equipped to meet its legal obligations to protect human health and the environment.

“At Trump EPA, we understand that states know themselves best, and we work collaboratively with states, tribes, and local governments to ensure clean land, air, and water for all residents,” the email said.

In the first six months of 2025, the Trump administration filed the lowest number of lawsuits against companies for environmental violations than in any six-month period in 21 years.cent According to a previous USA TODAY analysis.

Experts said this downward trend is due to two things: fewer enforcement resources and the political priorities of the administrations in charge.

The administration, which promises to unlock the country’s energy potential and become a hub for artificial intelligence, has proposed relaxing pollution standards for power plants and requirements to improve fuel economy for cars, and lifting some limits on PFAS (“permanent chemicals”) in drinking water.

“In some ways, the EPA seems to be at war with itself,” said Elizabeth Blum, a history professor at Troy University. “You’re supporting these things that cause environmental disasters, and it doesn’t make much sense.”

These changes came as several layoffs of federal employees occurred across agencies in the new Department of Government Efficiency. They included thousands of people from the Department of Human Health Services and the National Park Service.

Environmental historians estimate that by the end of 2025, about one in three EPA employees who were at the agency at the beginning of the year will be gone, either through layoffs or retirement. At the high end of the estimate, staffing levels would be at early 1980s levels.

“I think you’re going to start to see a decline in EPA’s ability to do its job,” Bloom said. “That could mean a lot of different things. Maybe air quality improvement plans won’t get approved, or maybe they’ll get approved when they shouldn’t be.”

After a record 43-day government shutdown, Congress is scheduled to meet again in January to decide on a budget. The White House originally proposed a 55% cut to the EPA, but the Republican-led Senate Appropriations Committee voted in favor of a smaller 5% cut.

Federal officials say possible lead contamination is the cause of Grand Cinnamon recalls in 14 states.

Cinnamon was distributed by TBC Distribution Corporate of Brooklyn, New York, according to a Dec. 9 post on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.

Officials said the recall was announced after an analysis by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets found high levels of lead in Lucky Foods brand cinnamon powder.

According to the recall, the affected cinnamon has a best-before date of September 15, 2027, and is “packaged in a 40g pouch in a vacuum or modified atmosphere, with a brown label identifying the Lucky Foods brand affixed to the top of the pouch.”

According to the FDA, the recall is related to an ongoing public health warning about lead contamination in cinnamon products starting in 2024. The Lucky Foods brand cinnamon that was subject to the recall was added to the alert on December 10th.

Where was the recalled cinnamon sold?

The affected products were distributed to retailers in the following 14 states from April 11th to September 1st:

Symptoms of short-term lead exposure

Short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not cause obvious symptoms. Elevated blood lead levels may be the only sign of lead exposure.

The FDA said that when children are exposed to large amounts of lead over a period of weeks or months, it can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system. “This can lead to learning disabilities, developmental disorders, and other long-term health problems,” the FDA writes.

Chronic lead exposure can cause renal dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects in adults.

What should I do if I have a cinnamon product included in this recall?

If you have this recalled cinnamon that is affected by an ongoing recall, refrain from consuming it and contact the company for more information at 718-444-5556 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

Why the 2026 Toyota bZ is a game-changer for electric SUVs

0

play

Strong Points

  1. Beautiful and comfortable cloth seat
  2. Sporty ride and quick steering
  3. Range increased by 25%. NACS is standard equipment

Cons

  1. Terrible ergonomics due to digital cluster arrangement
  2. One-pedal driving prohibited
  3. no flank

Toyota bZ will be fully improved for 2026 It has a new, simpler name, new base model, more power, longer range, and faster charging. Many of the shortcomings of the previous model have been addressed, creating a more competitive compact all-electric SUV.

First off, the bZ (formerly bZ4X) is fun to drive. AWD model achieves significant horsepower improvement (from 214 hp up to 338 hp), it offers snappy acceleration and good high-speed stability despite a top speed of just 163 mph. Excellent chassis control and body composure in corners provide great entertainment on winding tracks. Steering is light and very quick, better than average for a compact SUV. Brake feel and throttle control are also solid. Still, there’s plenty of tire slam, wind noise, and gut shake over rough roads.

The interior features cool black and white woven heated cloth seats with smart shapes for maximum comfort. Unfortunately, the rest of the cabin is devastated by miles of black plastic.

I like the center stack on the new dual wireless charger, but I wish it had more storage space, as well as being able to put larger items without having to reach under the console. And the gearshift takes up a lot of space that could be put to better use.

Deputy editor Billy Rehbock said there were too many buttons on the steering wheel and the adaptive cruise button was confusing. He was particularly annoyed by the two buttons that appear to be for lane keeping, one to enable cruise control and one to set cruise control. A third button controls cruise control, and yet another button controls the vehicle’s following distance. Judges also complained that too much information was crammed into a small chunk of gauge, making it difficult to read.

But the judges’ biggest complaint was the placement of the driver’s digital display, which sits at the base of the windshield, forcing an awkward driving position. Poor ergonomics mean you have to sit high and the steering wheel is almost in your lap to see the gauges clearly. Then I glance at the infotainment screen propped up against the dashboard, and the system immediately alerts me to return my eyes to the road. We appreciate that the new 14.0-inch infotainment screen has dedicated climate controls on the bottom and a nifty colored physical knob, all of which represent a clear improvement.

The rear seating area has plenty of space and also features seatback pockets, air vents, USB ports, and heated chairs. However, there’s no getting away from how bleak it all looks. The power tailgate gives way to a spacious trunk with no storage space, but a lower storage area perfect for bag hooks, a high-wattage 120V outlet, and charging cables.

of bZ starts at a lower price than previous models — Good value for a vehicle that improves significantly in key areas (power and range) and offers a peppy, sporty ride (for those who can find a good seating position to check the meter).

This review is conducted as part of the 2026 SUV of the Year (SUVOTY) test, in which each vehicle is evaluated based on six key criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, and performance of value and intended functionality. Eligible vehicles must be completely new or significantly modified.

House Republicans propose health care bill, could vote next week

0

With federal aid under the Affordable Care Act set to expire on Dec. 31, potentially raising premiums for millions of people, a health care proposal with broad support is urgently needed.

play

WASHINGTON – House Republicans have announced a bill aimed at making health care more affordable, without extending premiums under the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), which Democrats had proposed.

With Obamacare subsidies set to expire on Dec. 31, lawmakers are scrambling to craft a health care program that can pass a narrowly divided Congress. Without the extension, insurance premiums for 24 million Americans are expected to double on average.

A House vote could take place next week. But lawmakers remain sharply divided over health care after Democrats’ demands to extend Obamacare led to the longest government shutdown in history.

Republicans oppose Obamacare, while Democrats advocate extending the subsidies for three years. With only a few days left in the year, the Senate rejected proposals from both parties on December 11th.

The House Rules Committee is scheduled to meet on Dec. 16 to decide whether to approve the proposed Obamacare subsidy extension and other amendments. A vote in the House could take place later this week.

But even if House Republicans were to unite behind the proposal, its chances are fading in the Senate. The bill would need support from 60 senators in a chamber that includes 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats.

The House Republican proposal aims to reduce costs and improve options for workers.

On the cost side, the bill would require pharmacy benefit managers to provide employers with binding information about prescription drug spending, rebates, and prescribing decisions regarding available drugs. The bill also promises to provide funding in 2027 to lower premiums, especially for low-income enrollees.

To provide more choice, this legislation would expand association health insurance plans by allowing employers to collaborate across industries to purchase affordable coverage.

The bill aims to protect small and medium-sized employers from catastrophic claims by making it clear that stop-loss insurance is not health insurance. And the bill would codify a 2019 rule that allows employees to buy their own insurance and pay for it with their pre-tax income.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said in announcing the Republican proposal that Obamacare “destroyed America’s health care system” by raising premiums.

“Since its inception, premiums have soared, networks have shrunk, systems have become bloated and inefficient, and waste, fraud and abuse are rampant,” Johnson said.

But House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) told MSNOW that the Republican bill “is likely to be a disaster and will not actually strengthen health care for the American people.”

Hailee Steinfeld is pregnant and expecting her first child with Josh Allen

Hailee Steinfeld is pregnant!

The “Hawkeye” star, 29, is expecting her first child with her husband, NFL player Josh Allen, 29.

Steinfeld shared the big news on Instagram on Friday, Dec. 12, with a sweet video of the two embracing. The NFL quarterback and the “Sinners” actress hug and share a kiss in the video, which reveals her baby bump as she pulls up her sweater, which reads “mother” in all caps. The two look back at the camera while holding hands. The camera pans down to reveal a small snowman wearing a red scarf between them.

The “True Grit” actress and the Buffalo Bills QB have been romantically involved since 2023, but they have always kept their relationship secret. The couple didn’t go public on Instagram until July 2024, when Allen shared a merry-go-round that included a photo of herself and Steinfeld, but her face was not visible in the photo.

USA TODAY has reached out to Steinfield’s representatives for comment.

By November 2024, Steinfeld and Allen confirmed their engagement. A joint Instagram post at the time showed the NFL star on one knee in front of a large flower arch, and also shared the date he asked the question: “11.22.24.”

Allen later revealed in a conversation with Steinfeld in the Beau Society Newsletter that on the morning he was preparing to pop the question, she asked him, “Can we get married now?”

“I said, ‘I can’t wait any longer.’ I said, ‘I can’t wait to start a family with you.’ I told her my full name and asked her questions politely. I said, ‘Please,'” Allen recalled. “You were so surprised. You said yes. That was all that mattered to me. And the sun was out.”

“It feels incredible to be engaged to someone so special, loving, caring, gorgeous, fun and happy,” he added.

Steinfeld later wrote in a newsletter that her wedding weekend was “the best weekend of my life.”

In a recent interview with Bustle, the True Grit star revealed that trying on a wedding dress for the first time “actually took my breath away,” adding, “I literally thank God every day that I found the right person. That’s the best thing in the world. Life has meaning. Everything has meaning. With him, I feel like I’m stepping into the version of myself that I’ve always dreamed of.”

When asked in her Bustle profile if she and Allen are considering children, Steinfeld quickly replied, “Of course.”

This group explores the truth behind America’s secrets

Analysts at the National Security Archive have uncovered everything from assassination plots to programs to secretly give LSD to citizens. According to the group, the purpose of this activity is to keep the government in check.

play

The Central Intelligence Agency’s secret mind control program. The National Security Agency spied on Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali. Federal Manual on Political Assassinations.

It’s not just about spy novels. This is also part of the daily work of the National Security Archive, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The archive, which describes itself as an “activist archivist,” is not a government agency and collects declassified documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and other means. Since its founding in 1985, the group has exposed some of America’s darkest secrets, including records of senior U.S. officials discussing covert operations and memos from spymasters.

“These documents reveal what was done in the name of the American people without their knowledge,” Peter Corblue, an analyst with the group since 1986, told USA TODAY. “These declassified documents are the currency of history. They will remain forever valuable because they contain the words, positions, and operations of U.S. foreign policy actors and, in many cases, summaries of operations in other countries that are the only record of what happened there.”

The group celebrates its 40th anniversary this week. Documents obtained by the archive group reveal everything from how U.S. officials supported coups in Latin America to the torture of terrorist suspects on black sites after 9/11.

Legal experts and government watchdogs say the body of work produced by archives serves an important function in the state by providing a check on government power.

“If it weren’t for those 20 historians, archivists and document buffs, governments would have more control over public discourse,” said Stephen Kinser, author of a book about state covert operations around the world. “Their work is especially important in an administration as committed to secrecy as this one.”

The organization’s anniversary comes at a time when Americans are demanding transparency in government.

As soon as President Donald Trump took office, he moved to release long-classified files related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, his brother and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

Recently, calls for the Justice Department to release the investigative file on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have spread, prompting Congress to pass the Jeffrey Epstein Transparency Act. On December 10, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would force the Pentagon to release videos showing military attacks on survivors of US attacks on alleged drug cartel vessels.

But scholars say some of the most valuable files in the country’s history have only come to light through the work of the archive’s determined analysts.

Here’s what you need to know about the trove of documents the group uncovered, from a 702-page collection of CIA files containing government memos about a plot to assassinate Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba to the MKULTRA files, a CIA program developing mind-control techniques to test drugs, including LSD, on “unsuspecting American citizens.”

The CIA, the Mob, and Fidel Castro

One of the archive’s biggest coups is a 702-page collection of CIA files known as the “Family Jewels” report. When the archives released the files in 2007, it said the documents detailed “25 years of agency misconduct.”

One memo, titled “Potentially Embarrassing Agency Activities,” listed a catalog of CIA programs that went on to become a classic example of how top government leaders lost control of their agencies.

Among the items listed in the 1973 memo was a program to “influence human behavior by administering mind- and personality-altering drugs to unconscious subjects.” Confirmed “substantial involvement of government agencies” in the assassination of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. and plans to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The memo noted that the CIA’s plot to kill Castro had already been reported in the media, and said, “Although the column contained numerous factual errors, the allegations are essentially true.”

USA TODAY reported on the release of the documents, which included a 1960 plot to poison Cuban leader Fidel Castro in collusion with “organized crime figures and close associates of tycoon Howard Hughes.”

CIA Director General Michael Hayden reportedly said, “Today’s news coverage of the release will remind us of some things the CIA should not have done.” “This document really offers a glimpse into a very different era and a very different government agency.”

“People’s Information”: How the archive retrieves files

Archival analysts use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to access long-class classified documents. Federal law dating back to 1967 requires government agencies to turn over records to the public, with some exceptions.

The group says it has filed tens of thousands of FOIA requests over the decades and filed 75 lawsuits to ensure files are turned over in accordance with the law.

Georgetown Law Professor Cliff Sloan is an attorney who has represented the archives in some of its biggest cases. Sloan, a former government employee, said he understands the need to keep some government information classified.

But he says he takes on the case because he believes information that sheds light on government activities is in the country’s best interest.

“We’re a democracy, and people have a right to know what their government is doing unless there’s a very good reason not to,” said Sloan, who teaches constitutional law. “It’s people’s information.”

As distrust of government grows, Sloan said it becomes more important to shine a light on government dealings.

“In this era of disinformation and dramatically contradictory narratives, we need to get the facts out there, get the truth out there and let people decide for themselves,” he said.

cleaning the attic

When Kornbluh started working at the Archives, a former Washington Post investigative journalist taught him that it’s important to know what exactly to ask in a FOIA request, and that asking former government officials is a good place to start.

This information led him to offer to help a former Kennedy administration intelligence analyst “clean out the attic.” The official gave him a storage list of documents related to the Cuban Missile Crisis, including the titles of the documents and the exact locations where they were kept.

The crisis occurred in the fall of 1962 when the Soviet Union attempted to plant nuclear missiles in Cuba. It is believed that the United States and the Soviet Union came closest to nuclear war.

Documents obtained from the archives included secret correspondence between Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, which provided deeper insight into how the two countries avoided war.

“There is nothing more important to understanding the Cold War than understanding how we got into the worst crisis associated with it and how we got out of it,” the longtime archivist said. “That is the real mission of the archives: to strengthen the pillars of an informed citizenry.”

Sherone Moore’s girlfriend claims in police report that Michigan coach threatened suicide

Former Michigan coach Sherone Moore was arrested after prosecutors say the incident occurred at the home of a staff member with whom she had an “intimate relationship.”

Details of what led to Moore’s arrest were revealed during a hearing Friday, Dec. 12, in Washtenaw County Court. Moore is charged with a felony count of burglary and two misdemeanor counts of domestic stalking and one count of breaking and entering without permission of the property owner.

Moore was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 4:10 p.m. ET after the Pittsfield Township Police Department responded to an incident “for investigation of an alleged assault.” The police response came less than an hour before Moore was fired. He was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail Wednesday night and remained awake until his court appearance.

Reached for comment by USA TODAY Sports after Friday’s court hearing, a Michigan State spokesperson said the school has “no additional comment at this time.”

Why was Sherone Moore arrested?

Moore was arrested after an incident at the home of a Michigan state employee with whom Moore had an “intimate relationship.” Although his name has not been made public, the employee has been named as the whistleblower.

Prosecutors said the accuser had been in a close relationship with Moore for “a number of years” and that the accuser broke up with the defendant on the morning of Monday, Dec. 8. Moore then allegedly called and texted the accuser several times and eventually provided the information to the University of Michigan.

The Pittsfield Township Police Department said in a statement that an argument escalated after Moore entered the residence through an unlocked door without permission.

“At some point shortly thereafter, (Moore) came to her apartment at the address alleged in the complaint, immediately forced his way into the apartment, proceeded to the kitchen drawers, grabbed several butter knives and kitchen shears, and began threatening his life,” said First Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski.

Rezmierski added that Moore told the accuser, “I’m going to kill myself,” “I’m going to put you on surveillance,” “My blood is on your hands,” and “You’ve ruined my life.”

Prosecutors said the accuser then called her attorney and indicated she was going to call police, and Moore left.

“The whole act was very threatening and very coercive,” the prosecutor said.

Police responded to Moore’s home about 30 minutes after Michigan announced his termination. Officers located Moore in the city of Saline, about eight miles south of where the incident occurred. Police said the man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and then booked into the Washtenaw County Jail.

Sherone Moore charges, bail: 3rd degree burglary, stalking.

According to the Michigan Penal Code, third-degree burglary is defined as:

A person commits a misdemeanor by breaking and entering a dwelling with intent to commit a misdemeanor while in a dwelling, entering a dwelling without permission with intent to commit a misdemeanor while in a dwelling, or breaking and entering a dwelling or entering a dwelling without authorization at any time while entering or exiting, entering, or leaving a dwelling.

Moore was charged with third-degree assault for allegedly “unlawfully entering the complainant’s residence to commit the crime of stalking and committing the crime inside the residence.” Third-degree burglary is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $2,000, or both.

Stalking is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine, while breaking and entering without the owner’s permission is punishable by up to 90 days in prison and a $500 fine.

Bail was set at $25,000 and Moore was ordered to have no contact with his accuser.

Michigan State Interim President Domenico Grasso said in a letter to university students and faculty on Thursday, Dec. 11, that the investigation into Moore is continuing.

48-year-old Guatemalan immigrant dies while being detained at Camp East Montana immigration detention facility in El Paso

play

A Guatemalan immigrant who was being held at ICE’s Camp East Montana immigration detention facility has died at an El Paso hospital.

Francisco Gaspar Andres, 48, was pronounced dead on Dec. 3, according to an ICE news release. The official cause of death has not yet been determined, but authorities said it was likely due to “natural liver and kidney failure.”

He was admitted to Providence East Hospital on Nov. 16, but was treated by medical staff at the jail on Sept. 27, Oct. 2, and Oct. 9.

Gaspar Andrés was arrested along with his wife in Florida on September 1st. He was transferred to Camp East Montana on September 19 and was scheduled to be deported to Guatemala.

At least 25 immigrants died in immigration detention facilities across the United States in 2025, according to Congressional Oversight Statistics.

Camp East Montana first began accepting deportees on August 1st. The detention facility is scheduled to be the largest in the country.

This is the first confirmed death at Camp East Montana, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar.

US Rep. Veronica Escobar condemns migrant death

Escobar, an El Paso Democrat, criticized the Trump administration for not informing government offices of Gaspar Andres’ death after his death, despite an earlier investigation before a Congressional committee early Tuesday, Dec. 9.

“While the Department of Homeland Security’s claims about inhumane and abhorrent conditions at facilities like Camp East Montana are ‘completely false,’ my own visits and discussions with detainees prove otherwise,” Escobar said in a statement. ”Never before has an administration so carelessly mocked the rule of law while hypocritically defending values such as law and order. From their denial of genuine surveillance visits to the cruel treatment of detainees at this facility, it is clear that Camp East Montana is not being run effectively and humanely. ”

Escobar continued to sound the alarm about conditions inside the Camp East Montana facility.

Ahead of her latest parliamentary oversight visit on Dec. 1, she expressed frustration that none of the issues she raised, including the lack of health care, had been resolved.

United States Mint 2026 Coin Commemorating America’s 250th Anniversary

0

Those of a certain age may remember the coin collecting buzz sparked by the 1976 Bicentennial coin issued by the United States Mint. New coins are also coming soon to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

play

The United States Mint is issuing a special circulation coin to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Quarters, dimes and nickels minted in 2026 will feature special designs and markings that reflect milestones related to the nation’s founding in 1976. The U.S. Mint announced the coin design on Thursday, December 11th. Each coin features a historically relevant image and a double date: 1776 ∽ 2026.

The five different designs of the semi-quincentennial quarter feature portraits of Founding Fathers including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and James Madison. The face of freedom is depicted on the dime and inscribed with inscriptions such as “Freedom over tyranny.” The nickel maintains the image of Thomas Jefferson, but with the addition of the “1776 ∽ 2026” designation.

The U.S. Mint also issues the collectible Timeless Liberty Half Dollar and the collectible 1776-2026 Penny. “These historic coin designs tell the story of America’s journey towards a ‘more perfect union’ and celebrate America’s defining ideals of freedom,” Christy McNally, acting director of the U.S. Mint, said in a news release. “As we connect America through coins, we want to give every American the opportunity to hold 250 years of this country’s storied history in the palm of their hands.”

“Getting people excited about coin collecting”

Celebrating the nation’s 500th anniversary (the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States), these new coins are reminiscent of the coins issued by the U.S. Mint for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976.

At the time, the Mint issued quarter, half-dollar, and dollar coins with special reverse designs for the event, all of which circulated among the public in the same way as traditional quarters. However, the Mint is selling a special set of coins, which it plans to sell in commemoration of the 250th anniversary (dates and prices have not yet been announced).

“It’s an opportunity for the Mint to do something fun and get people excited about coin collecting,” John Feigenbaum, publisher of the rare coin pricing guide Gray Sheet, told USA TODAY. “I love these designs. I think they represent the true forward-thinking of the Mint as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary.”

Will there be Trump coins?

Although unreleased, it is likely a commemorative $1 coin featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump.

Back in October, the Treasury Department announced it was considering a new $1 coin featuring President Trump’s portrait as part of a coin commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. (The Mint offers coin designs on its website.)

Federal law prohibits survivors from using U.S. currency.

Here’s a closer look at the new 2026 coins that the Mint will begin producing after the new year.

New coins for 2026 include five different quarters celebrating America’s 250th anniversary

The 250th Anniversary 25 cent coin comes in five different designs, all of which share inscriptions such as “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” and “1776 ~ 2026.” The breakdown is as follows:

  • Mayflower Compact Quarter: The obverse of the coin depicts two Pilgrims representing the Mayflower Compact, signed on November 21, 1620, to establish a colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The reverse of the coin is stamped with the words Mayflower and “Mayflower Compact.”
  • Revolutionary War District: George Washington appears in the foreground. The reverse features Continental Army soldiers from Valley Forge and an inscription reading “Revolutionary War.”
  • Declaration of Independence Quarterly: The obverse features the profile of Thomas Jefferson, and the reverse features the Liberty Bell with inscriptions such as “Declaration of Independence.”
  • US Constitution Quarterly: The fourth president, James Madison, also known as the “Father of the Constitution,” graces the obverse of the coin. Reverse: Independence Hall and inscriptions “We the People,” “Liberty,” and the U.S. Constitution.
  • Gettysburg Address Quarter: The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and the reverse features an image of two long clasped hands with the inscription “A New Nation Envisioned in Liberty.”

U.S. Mint 2026 Coins: Dimes and Nickels 1776-2026

In addition to quarters, dimes and nickels will also be updated to the 2026 version.

  • A new dime of freedom: On the obverse of the 2026 coin, Liberty will replace Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but the coin will retain the inscriptions “Freedom” and “In God We Trust,” with the addition of “1776-2026.” The reverse of the coin depicts an eagle with an arrow in its talons. The inscriptions include “Freedom Against Tyranny” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
  • 1776 ~ 2026 Nickel: The 2026 edition retains the current image of Thomas Jefferson, inspired by Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 painting, and the word “Liberty” in Jefferson’s handwriting, but adds a double date: “1776-2026.” The reverse image of Monticello remains the same.

U.S. Mint’s New 250th Anniversary Collection Coins

The U.S. Mint plans to issue other special coins, including a commemorative 2026 version of the obsolete penny, but these coins will not go into circulation and will instead be sold directly from the Mint (prices and release dates have not yet been announced).

  • Enduring Freedom Half Dollar: The 50 Cent piece, which currently features a portrait of John F. Kennedy, will feature a close-up of the Statue of Liberty and the inscriptions “In God We Trust” and “1776-2026” for 2026. On the reverse side, Liberty passes the torch, the U.S. Mint says, “and the flame continues into new generations with the momentum of purpose.” New inscription: “Knowledge is the only guardian of true freedom.”
  • 1776 ~ 2026 Penny: Two dates from 1776 to 2026 will be included for one year only. This coin will be out of circulation in small change in 2026, but can still be purchased as a collectible from the U.S. Mint.

Feigenbaum said the release of these coins is likely to stimulate interest in coin collecting, much like the Treasury Department’s retirement of the penny. Mr. Feigenbaum is also the executive director of the Professional Numismatists Guild, a nonprofit organization comprised of many of the nation’s rare coin experts.

But the average collector should know that these coins released to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary aren’t necessarily rare, he said. “We just want people to know that the collection is really fun and interesting,” Feigenbaum said.

First major snowstorm hits US as polar vortex brings bitter cold

0

The polar vortex is bringing much-needed cold air to much of the United States, but forecasters say the low temperatures won’t last.

play

Forecasters say the first snowstorm of the season targeting major cities in the Northeast will dump several inches of snow over the weekend, followed by a fierce arctic blast thanks to the polar vortex.

The cold weather will not last long, with forecasters predicting a mild return to winter from coast to coast, potentially dooming dreams of a white Christmas for millions of people.

But first, a weekend storm will bring light to moderate snow to the central and northeastern United States.

Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue, calling it a “baby nor’easter,” said in an email to USA TODAY that many people will experience at least 3 inches of snow from the storm.

On Sunday, Dec. 14, he said, “Snowfall could be heavy in three to six hour bursts, with snow accumulations of three to six inches, possibly more.”

By the end of the storm, Sunday, Dec. 14, 1 to 6 inches of snow will fall along a 1,500-mile swath from the northern Plains to the southern New England coast, according to AccuWeather’s online forecast. The storm will be concentrated along much of I-70 in the Ohio Valley region, and then along the heavily populated I-95 corridor from Maryland to Massachusetts.

“Mother Vein of Cold Air” Heads to the United States

A much-anticipated frigid arctic airflow will spread across the north-central United States on Saturday, Dec. 13, heading east and south.

“There is an atmosphere over northwestern Canada with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below zero that is moving southeast toward the United States,” AccuWeather chief broadcast meteorologist Bernie Rayno said in an online forecast. “This is a mother lode of cold air, a term I don’t use lightly.”

“A cold high-pressure system will spread across the Midwest, Ohio, and Tennessee valleys, with temperatures well below normal, extending into the Gulf Coast early Monday, December 15, with temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below normal,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.

The weather service said several record low temperatures are possible, with wind chills dropping into the teens Sunday night into Monday morning across the southeastern Atlantic Ocean and south of Mexico’s Gulf Coast.

The National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, has issued an “extreme cold watch” for the region, warning that “extended periods of below-freezing temperatures can cause water pipe bursts. Be sure to protect outdoor faucets and drips to prevent water pipe bursts.”

Snowstorm forecast: How much snow will it fall?

Are you wondering how much snow is in the forecast? Use USA TODAY’s detailed winter weather forecast map below to find out where snow is expected in the coming hours and days.

The forecast predicts that the snow will melt in December.

But the weather service said the weather system in the western U.S. could push temperatures 15 to 25 degrees above seasonal averages, with temperatures in the low 48s extending across much of the east from midweek onwards and “causing the December snowmelt.”

“While the cold and snow may already feel like Christmas time, this severe cold pattern is not expected to continue into the holidays,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

According to AccuWeather, the vast snowpack still accumulating from this weekend’s storms is likely to be eroded by warmer temperatures ahead of Christmas. This could wreak havoc on millions of people’s dreams of a white Christmas.

“It’s cold and snowy now, so don’t expect it to be that way on Christmas Day,” Pastelok said in an online forecast. “Skiers and snowboarders should take advantage of the cold air and fresh powder on open Appalachian slopes. Ski and board conditions may deteriorate during Christmas week at some resorts due to the influx of warm air.”

Meanwhile, those looking for warmth, or at least the idea of warmth, through this weekend can look to much of the Florida peninsula and west of the Rocky Mountains, except for foggy areas of California’s Central Valley and flooded areas of the Pacific Northwest, AccuWeather said.

But could the polar vortex rear its ugly head again?

Maue said in an email that a ridge of high pressure will form coast-to-coast in the Lower 48 by Dec. 22, “but questions remain as to whether Christmas is a ‘blowing of the torch’ or whether the polar vortex could strike back and drop some (very cold) troughs and foliage into the Great Lakes and Northeast.”

Maue said the warming pattern must eventually break and Canada’s cold pool will return to the lower 48 degrees. “But there is no clear indication (yet) of when or how that will happen.”

Why is Donald Trump mad at Indiana?

0

play

President Donald Trump is targeting another state senator. This time it’s a member of his own party from a red state.

During a speech in the Oval Office on Dec. 11, President Trump said he hoped Indiana Sen. Roderick Bray would lose the upcoming primary.

“I hope so, because he did something very, very bad,” Trump told reporters.

Bray, the Hoosier state’s Senate president pro tempore, was one of 21 Republican senators who recently voted 31-19 to reject the redistricting bill in the Republican-controlled Indiana Senate.

Bray, 56, has served in the state senate since 2012, representing the 37th state senate district, which includes parts of Morgan, Johnson, Owen and Putnam counties.

Trump’s words stem from the state’s recent redistricting efforts, a legal process that draws electoral boundaries.

The Supreme Court ruled on Dec. 4 that Texas can use a new congressional map that favors Republicans in the 2026 election. Not since the 1800s have so many states attempted to redraw U.S. House district lines without a new census.

That’s why President Trump wants to elect someone else to fill Bray’s seat next year.

Why is President Trump interested in Indiana?

President Trump said on Thursday, Dec. 11, that he hopes Brey loses the next primary after the Indiana Senate recently rejected a presidential-backed congressional redistricting plan.

The vote comes less than a week after the Indiana House of Representatives approved redistricting House Bill 1032, passing the bill 57-41 on Dec. 5, advancing a controversial plan to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps ahead of the 2026 election, which was backed by President Trump and the National Republican Redistricting Trust.

The bill would create two new Republican districts, giving Republicans control of all nine of Indiana’s congressional districts.

President Trump hopes that Republicans will retain their House majority in the 2026 midterm elections after recently pushing for new congressional district maps in several states.

As of Dec. 7, six states have redrawn the maps that determine who their residents can vote for to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives. they are:

  • California
  • ohio
  • north carolina
  • missouri
  • texas
  • Utah

Texas and California are each projected to lose five seats to the majority party.

In Ohio, two Democratic-held seats could flip to Republicans.

North Carolina’s map was designed to flip one seat for Republicans.

Missouri dismantled the Kansas City-based Democratic seat.

Utah’s maps are still being contested in court, but one of the state’s four seats could be held by a Democrat.

Terrorist attacks, jailbreaks and National Guard disrupt New Orleans

0

In New Orleans, 2025 began with a terrorist attack and jailbreak, and is about to end with a National Guard execution. But at least the hurricane was avoided.

play

NEW ORLEANS – At first glance, Bourbon Street is just as it used to be. Tourists clutch cocktails as they totter along uneven sidewalks in high heels. Shoe shiners tell bad dad jokes. Brass bands draw crowds with cell phone cameras in hand. The beignets are still piping hot and the frozen margaritas are still frozen.

But in a quiet area, things are rather quiet. On a cool December night with raindrops staining the sidewalk, longtime street performer Onunze Ubaka, 72, belted out Motown classics on a mostly empty corner on the edge of Jackson Square in the usually bustling French Quarter. There were very few tourists passing by. Even fewer people stopped to drop dollar bills into his white tip bucket.

“You can feel the change,” Ubaka said between songs by Lou Rawls and the Temptations. Inside his tip bucket was a small pile of dollars, barely enough to cover the 15-pound dumbbells he had started putting in after a young man tried to run away with them.

Ubaka said there was an overall economic slowdown, especially a decline in international tourists.

He said the city’s broader struggles, from the devastating terrorist attack on Bourbon Street on Jan. 1 to the embarrassing escape of 10 Orleans Parish Justice Center inmates in May, to the subsequent indictment of the mayor on federal corruption charges and an unexpected city budget shortfall, haven’t helped either.

And now, federal immigration agents are roaming the outskirts of the city in the high-profile Operation Catahoula Crunch.

“I think a lot of that is contributing to the economic slowdown. It kind of puts a damper on things,” Ubaka said of the city’s woes in 2025.

Tourists have moved away

While city leaders are working to diversify the local economy, New Orleans relies heavily on tourism, and the year got off to a tragic start with the shocking attack on Bourbon Street on January 1 that left 14 people dead. In the attack, Texas Army veteran Shamsud Din Jabbar drove a rented pickup truck down Bourbon Street, which was packed with New Year’s revelers.

A New Orleans police officer shot and killed Jabbar after he crashed into a truck, and city officials reopened the street for a party the next day.

Experts and locals alike say reports of the attack have slowed tourism to the city just as it was starting to regain momentum after the coronavirus pandemic. Tourism experts say superstar performer Taylor Swift’s three-night Elas Tour appearance at the iconic Caesars Superdome in late 2024 will provide a $500 million boost to the local economy.

New Orleans attracts more than 18 million tourists a year, dwarfed by the approximately 364,000 visitors who call the city home. And these visitors are typically about twice as wealthy as locals, according to a 2021 study commissioned by state officials. In addition to solo travelers, tens of thousands of convention attendees pump $2 billion into the economy each year.

In an effort to reassure its most important visitors, especially those coming to watch the Super Bowl on Feb. 9, city officials have flooded the streets with police, installed new security fencing and installed new cameras in downtown areas. Although the match went off without a hitch, there was a significant budget shortfall due to overtime by the police and a snowstorm in late January.

The city ultimately had to borrow $125 million to cover the cost, and cut about $150 million from next year’s budget to make up the difference. City officials are also struggling to pay for ongoing road repairs related to Hurricane Katrina, which are still needed two decades after the storm devastated much of the low-lying city.

City leaders say part of the problem may stem from Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s indictment on federal corruption charges in August.

Cantrell did not run for re-election following the indictment, and will be replaced in January by Councilwoman Helena Moreno, a Mexican-born Democrat and former television journalist.

The local sheriff also lost his job after the May jailbreak. It took authorities five months and hundreds of thousands of dollars to recapture all the fugitives.

Even local sports teams are having terrible seasons. The New Orleans Saints have one of the worst records in the NFL at 3-10, and the New Orleans Pelicans are last in the NBA conference at 4-22.

“This year has been a year of transition and a difficult year,” said Marc Morial, a former mayor and current president of the National League of Cities. “I think the city is feeling more optimistic now that we have a new mayor, but there is still a lot of uncertainty.”

Morial said he’s concerned about further budget cuts, given President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of New Orleans as “pretty bad,” and the dramatic expansion of immigration enforcement that has coincided with overall cuts in federal spending for social programs and road repairs. Mr. Morial served as mayor from 1994 to 2002.

Morial also said he is concerned that the immigration enforcement movement in the New Orleans area is scaring off the workers needed to keep the city’s hotels and restaurants thriving. In December, immigrant rights groups organized several small protests in downtown New Orleans, holding signs criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign.

Tough times for the local economy

On Royal Street in the city’s storied French Quarter, longtime business owner Benny Nagy said he is having one of the worst years in memory. Nagy, who has run Mardi Gras Zone for 25 years, said customers aren’t buying, employees are quitting and the prices of international goods he imports are rising.

But standing in the warehouse-like store surrounded by beaded necklaces, sequined dresses and trinkets adorned with the city’s signature fleur-de-lis, Nagy said she remained optimistic.

Nagy said that while the city has struggled recently, he believes President Trump’s approach to international trade and tariffs, U.S. manufacturing and immigration enforcement will ultimately boost the nation’s overall economy.

“I honestly believe this is America’s golden age, and people won’t realize it until 10 years from now,” Nagy said. He was born in Iran when his Jewish family was still a child before being safely evacuated to Israel. They later immigrated to the United States.

Nagy, 59, said he can’t find anyone to pick apples on his farm 30 miles south of the city because of a pizza shop employee who quit after he raised an Israeli flag to commemorate the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, and a new immigration crackdown.

“You may feel squeamish, but there are multiple reasons for that,” he says. “We are experiencing great change in this country, and change creates uncertainty.”

Like Nagy, French Quarter tarot card reader Marie “Betty Boo” Ware also dismisses concerns about corruption in the city. She said all the port cities she’s worked in have had similar characteristics. And while New Orleans is suffering this year, she said many other Americans feel the same way.

Mr. Ware, 58, greets passing fortune tellers, musicians and homeless people by name from a folding table in Jackson Square, overlooking a memorial to the 14 people killed in the Jan. 1 terrorist attack.

With her new puppy, Lilybell, sitting by her side in a wheeled cart, Ware said she has been kicked out of the French Quarter for the past 20 years and now lives on the other side of the Mississippi River. She was thankful that Mother Nature spared the area from hurricanes this year, but worried the city couldn’t afford to have enough police officers on the streets to make tourists feel safe.

She said her conversations with clients throughout the year revealed deep economic insecurity among the population, to the point where she wondered aloud whether to quit her decades-long job as a tarot card reader or at least find another source of income.

In 2026, Mardi Gras will be held in mid-February, relatively early after the holidays, but Ware said he is concerned that people who are struggling to make ends meet at Christmas may not be willing to spend more to celebrate.

“When you get into an environment where everyone is financially insecure, you have to start thinking about whether you should really take on a part-time job,” she said. “All we can do is keep trying to put our best face on tourism.”

Big Easy remains optimistic

Tourists aren’t necessarily aware of the city’s challenges, but United Way officials on the front lines say they’re hopeful 2026 will start on a positive note. Michael Williamson, president and CEO of United Way of Southeast Louisiana, said he’s hearing a sense of optimism throughout the region.

The number of people seeking help through United Way nearly doubled from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025, and the organization rolled out “Prosperity Centers” to help local residents pay taxes, qualify for government programs, and even make a down payment on a home or car.

“I think people here are very proud that this is their home, and they come together every day to make it better. The way the community shows up for each other… it makes people optimistic when they see others leading the way,” Williamson said. “Who in New Orleans isn’t excited about Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest and all the people who want to come here?”

That’s the attitude Michelle Gollner feels every time she visits her hometown. Gollner, 44, a native of New Orleans, moved to Baton Rouge several years ago and was visiting with friends after recently getting married.

She said she had never considered encouraging wedding guests to visit the Big Easy, despite all the challenges.

“One of the things people often say about New Orleans is that we are resilient,” Gollner said. “Not even Katrina could take us out. We’re here to stay.”

New Epstein photos grab attention, but the trove of information is just beginning

The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee said there are other “disturbing” images that should be revealed. The Justice Department has just one week to release all information about Epstein.

play

WASHINGTON – Congressional Democrats released another set of eyebrow-raising photos on Monday that further show connections between several celebrities, including President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton, and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.

But the aftermath is just beginning. And the trove of information available to the public is about to get even bigger.

The release of 19 new undated images of celebrities including director Woody Allen and Trump’s former West Wing aide Steve Bannon is a precursor to what Democrats on the House Oversight Committee plan to release to the public, even more file dumps than their recent release of 95,000 photos. The panel released more than 70 additional photos later that day. (Deputies provided only limited details about the images, with no specific indication that the people in the photos were involved in any wrongdoing.)

“We’ve probably looked at about 25,000 photos so far, and some of the other photos that we didn’t release today are incredibly disturbing,” Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the committee’s ranking member, told reporters on Dec. 12.

The Justice Department has until Dec. 19 to release as many documents related to its own investigation into Epstein as possible. The deadline was enshrined in a law passed by Congress nearly unanimously in November and signed by President Trump.

By then, lawmakers will have left Washington for the holidays, but the timing of the long-awaited disclosures is sure to keep the issue high on the agenda for at least the next few weeks, if not longer. That means lawmakers will face a variety of choices in the new year about how to respond to the information that has come to light.

Republicans control Congress, giving it power to set hearings and a broad oversight schedule, but many Republicans have expressed bipartisan interest in thoroughly investigating Epstein’s complex web despite the president’s ties to him.

President Trump has repeatedly denied having any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities. The two had a personal relationship decades ago, but President Trump has said he has distanced himself from the financier.

Democrats have accused the Trump administration in recent months of covering up for Epstein. But after signing the Epstein File Transparency Act, President Trump pointed out on social media that Epstein was indicted in a New York federal case in 2019 during his first term. He also noted that the investor, who died by suicide in prison that year, was a longtime contributor to Democratic politics.

“Once again, House Democrats are selectively releasing hand-picked, randomly edited photos to create a false narrative,” White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson said in a statement.

Former President Bill Clinton’s attorney did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment on the new images.

Judges cite new law authorizing disclosure of information

It’s unclear what will be released next week. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in July that most of what remains in internal files includes numerous child sex abuse videos and recordings that identify victims.

In recent weeks, the department has asked federal judges in Epstein-related cases to allow the release of grand jury transcripts and other evidence that are normally classified. They resolutely obeyed.

On December 5, Florida District Judge Rodney Smith ordered the release of documents related to abandoned investigations into Epstein from 2005 to 2007. On December 9, New York District Judge Paul Engelmayer gave the go-ahead for the release of grand jury transcripts and exhibits in the case against Epstein’s former associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence. The next day, New York District Judge Richard Berman gave the go-ahead to share records of a grand jury’s 2019 investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking allegations.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), one of the authors of the Epstein File Transparency Act, told USA TODAY that he is encouraged so far by both the recent court ruling and the Department of Justice’s compliance.

“The judge did follow the law, and the Department of Justice petitioned the judge based on our laws.” So far, it seems like they’re making an effort.

King Charles’ Speech – Critical Health Updates in Video Message

Charles III has reached a milestone in his recovery from cancer.

The 77-year-old British monarch revealed in a personal video message broadcast on Friday, December 12, as part of ‘Stand Up to Cancer 2025’, that she could reduce her cancer treatment next year.

The campaign, a collaboration between Cancer Research UK and the country’s Channel 4, was launched earlier this month to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and raise money for research into the disease.

“Thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention, and compliance with doctors’ orders, I can share the good news that my own cancer treatment schedule will be shortened in the new year,” Charles said. “This milestone is both a personal celebration and a testament to the remarkable advances in cancer treatment in recent years.”

The message was pre-recorded in November from the morning room of Prince Charles and Queen Camilla’s official residence, Clarence House.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Friday that Prince Charles was “responsing extremely well to treatment,” adding that doctors were advising that treatment be reduced to a “preventive phase.”

The Palace said: “This position will be continuously monitored and reviewed to protect and prioritize his continued recovery.” “As the King said, this milestone in his recovery journey is a ‘great personal blessing.'”

Prince Charles has been gradually returning to royal duties this year after undergoing treatment for an unspecified type of cancer that was detected during tests following surgery to correct an enlarged prostate. He experienced side effects during treatment and was hospitalized earlier this year.

Despite being candid about his experience with cancer, the king will not discuss publicly the type of cancer he is battling.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Friday: “The advice from cancer experts is that Her Majesty, in his determination to support the cancer community as a whole, would prefer that Her Majesty speak to people suffering from all forms of the disease, rather than refer to her own specific symptoms.”

Prince Charles’ battle with cancer coincided with that of his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, who announced a month after the monarch that she was undergoing preventative cancer treatment.

In a video released by the palace at the time, Duchess Kate said her diagnosis was a “huge shock” for her family, adding that she and Prince William “did everything we could to manage and manage this privately for the benefit of our young family.”

In January, Kate announced she was in remission.

“As anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer knows, adjusting to a new normal takes time,” she wrote in a social media post at the time. “But we’re looking forward to a productive year ahead. There’s a lot to look forward to and we appreciate everyone’s continued support.”

SpongeBob fans, are you ready? Not to visit Bikini Bottom, but to visit the new popcorn bucket that’s being talked about ahead of the release of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Major theater chains such as AMC Theaters, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark Theaters are selling popcorn buckets for the upcoming “SpongeBob SquarePants” movie, including one designed to look like a boat and one that doubles as a cup and popcorn tub.

Theaters such as Cinemark have already begun selling merchandise ahead of the film’s Dec. 19 release, but AMC Theaters will not sell merchandise until Thursday, Dec. 18, according to the company’s website.

Carolina Cinemas, a locally owned movie theater in North Carolina, shared a video on TikTok of employees filling boat-shaped popcorn buckets with water, and mentioned in the comments how they were considering purchasing the buckets.

TikToker @serenityangel09trc wrote in the comments, “I don’t need it…I don’t need it…I definitely don’t need it.” “need!!!!”

The popcorn bucket comes after other companies added popular SpongeBob merchandise and themed meals to their menus and product lines, including Burger King’s SpongeBob Krabby Whopper and Mr. Krab’s Cheese Bacon Tots (coin-shaped tots filled with cheese, bacon bits and fries in a treasure chest).

Crocs is also getting in on the SpongeBob movie frenzy, selling SpongeBob-inspired shoes such as the Squidward Clog, which features the face of the clarinet-playing character on olive green clogs. The shoe also includes a blue and black strap and boat anchor.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: The Search for Squarepants opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, December 19th. Paramount has launched a website to help movie fans find showtimes and watch videos about the movie.

A video of Regal Cinemas’ popcorn bucket and drink combo was posted on social media. One TikToker shared a video of a Regal Cinemas employee filling a bathtub in a seat at the SpongeBob Theater. The cup and tub combination features a drink, popcorn, and the shape of the title character sitting in a theater seat wearing a pirate hat. Drinks are in the center, and the chairs open at the back to allow workers to fill them with salty and buttery snacks.

What do you think of AMC’s SpongeBob movie merchandise?

AMC Theater merchandise from the new movie includes a pirate-inspired cup featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, a popcorn bucket shaped like SpongeBob’s boat, and a figure of the title character standing deep behind a ship.

Plush toys, popcorn buckets filled with mysterious stuffed animals, and cups featuring SpongeBob, Squidward and Gary the Snail toppers are also on sale.
