‘Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp compares Volume 2 to ‘Harry Potter’

NEW YORK – Noah Schnapp was in a wild camp when Season 1 of “Stranger Things” debuted on Netflix in July 2016.

“I don’t have a cell phone, so I’m not part of the real world. My parents call me three times in the summer,” Schnapp, 21, recalled while playing a leisurely game of Jenga in a Union Square cafe. But gradually, “I remember my mom sending me an email saying, ‘Noah, you have a fan page and you’ve reached 10,000 followers!'” I was like, “What?!”

Nine years and nearly 24 million Instagram followers later, Schnapp is preparing to say goodbye to Will Byers, the bushy-haired young man who spent five seasons on the sci-fi phenomenon Stranger Things.

As we sit under a shelf filled with Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer Quest, the young actor oscillates between excitement and good-natured panic. After three new episodes air on Christmas Day, Stranger Things will conclude with a huge finale on December 31st. And in the spring, Schnapp will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, where he plans to study film.

“I keep repeating the cycle of, ‘Oh, my life is over! I’m so sad!'” Schnapp says. “But then you’re like, ‘Oh, anything can happen now!'” If there was another season of “Stranger Things,” it would be exhausting. Now is the perfect time to end it and it will be a great fresh start for next year. ”

Noah Schnapp is learning not to derive self-worth from social media

Last month’s Volume 1 cliffhanger saw Will access his newfound mystical powers to battle the Demogorgon and save his friends. This was a startling revelation for a character who had been looked down upon as cowardly and weak ever since he was kidnapped and drawn into the Upside Down in Season 1.

For years, Schnapp was hesitant to voice his concerns about Will to series creators Matt and Ross Duffer. But before Season 5, he confidently called them out.

“I thought, ‘Guys, the show starts with him, but after Season 3, they just kind of sideline him. Can we figure out why he was the first victim?'” Schnapp recalls. Volume 2 will “explore Will’s internal stakes and answer the question of why things like this exist. The similarities between Will and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) are a bit like Harry Potter and Voldemort,” he teases.

The remaining episodes also explore Will’s romantic longing for his best friend Mike (Finn Wolfhard). The character has gradually come to terms with his queer identity, much like Schnapp, who came out in a TikTok video in 2023. But for years before that, Schnapp remembers being hounded by journalists about his sexuality.

“It was weird for an interviewer to ask a 12-year-old, ‘Do you think Will is gay? Do you identify with the character? And are you gay?'” he says. “It was very personal and over the top.”

Coming out can be difficult enough for queer kids because they worry about the impact it will have on their personal relationships.

“But on top of that, I was like, ‘Oh, but I also have a full-time job that supports my whole life,'” Schnapp recalls. “How is this going to impact my future and my ability to work and be seen as something other than a queer kid?” It was weird having to have conversations with friends and family, as well as my publicists and managers, like, ‘Is it okay for me to come out publicly, or do I have to stay hidden for the rest of my career?’ ”

Like most of his Stranger Things castmates, Schnapp has endured invasive fan treatment. When I was a freshman in college, I remember students banging on his door in the middle of the night and screaming his name. Before today’s interview, a young woman waited outside the bathroom and cornered him to take a selfie, which he politely complied with.

“For the most part, everyone is very respectful, but people often go overboard,” Schnapp says. He would reply to every message and spend hours searching his name on social media to see what people were saying. However, he has since taken a step back from most platforms.

“My vision board for 2026 is ‘Social media is not the real world,'” Schnapp says. “You have to learn to set boundaries for your own mental health. It’s not healthy to internalize every opinion in the world every 10 seconds.”

Even in the new season, friends will ask him if he’s seen fan edits or memes about Will’s abilities. But he only sees what people send him.

“That validation is fickle and goes up and down,” Schnapp says. “When you’re high, people want you; when you’re low, people don’t want you. You have to learn not to derive your value from people who don’t know you.”

‘Stranger Things’ star says growing up in the spotlight is ‘not easy’

Schnapp admires his Stranger Things co-star Sadie Sink, who has a “healthy relationship” with fame. He also leans on Millie Bobby Brown and Maya Hawke, both of whom have similarly endured varying degrees of public scrutiny and curiosity.

“Growing up in the public eye is difficult,” Schnapp says. “You don’t know yourself and you don’t understand anything. And now you’re expected to know everything and have all the answers. I’ve always felt shame for saying the wrong thing or not taking something seriously that I should have. And that stays with me forever. People grow and learn, and it’s not easy to do that publicly.”

He agrees with Ariana Grande’s argument that all child actors should undergo mandatory treatment. For a while, he thought he was a “happy, lucky kid” and didn’t need a therapist, but then he got one.

“After a number of years, you start to say, ‘No, this is an abnormal life, and you need some kind of support system other than your parents,'” Schnapp says. “Growing up, I never understood why people were depressed, or turned to drugs, or had eating disorders. As I get older, I understand how the pressures of Hollywood can create such situations. I always tell my parents, ‘You’ll never live in LA. You’ll get lost.'”

The actor is based in New York, where he consumes a healthy diet of pop culture. After watching “All of Us Strangers,” she cried non-stop, and is embarrassed to say that she only recently saw “Wicked” on Broadway. Although he would like to try his hand at writing and directing someday, he says his main goal for 2026 is to “take more acting classes and get off this damn phone.”

“I’ll probably never do another blockbuster like ‘Stranger Things,'” Schnapp admits. “This is the biggest show in the world! We don’t expect it to continue to compete for that level of viewership.

“But now we have the opportunity to get smaller indie films and get theatrical releases. I’m grateful that Stranger Things put me in a good place financially for the rest of my life. What more could I ask for?”

White Christmas predictions for 2025 have been updated. These states see snow

0

While there are some areas where a white Christmas is almost guaranteed, nationally, things are looking pretty bleak for many snow lovers.

play

Christmas is fast approaching, and meteorologists have a pretty good idea of who will wake up to a snowy landscape on Christmas Day.

While some areas are guaranteed a white Christmas, nationally the picture looks pretty bleak for many snow lovers. “Just a few weeks ago, it snowed in over 45% of the lower 48 states,” AccuWeather Principal Long Range Expert Paul Pastelok said in an email to USA TODAY.

“Roughly half of the snowpack has melted. Many snow lovers will be disappointed this Christmas,” he said.

Snowfall expected to be lower than average during Christmas week

In fact, as of the morning of December 23, the lower 48 states had just 18% snow cover, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

On average, about 38% of the lower 48 states will see an inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day, according to more than 20 years of data compiled by NOAA.

Since 2003, that percentage has varied widely from year to year, from just 17.6% in 2023 to a whopping 63% of the continental United States in 2009, according to Weather.com.

Northeast storm brings snow

A snowstorm will move through the Northeast on Tuesday, Dec. 23, increasing the chances of a snowy holiday in that part of the country.

“The chance of a white Christmas is slowly increasing from northeastern Pennsylvania to northern New Jersey and southern New England as the storm moves through with fresh snow,” Pastelok said. “We expect it to remain cold enough to leave snow until Christmas morning.”

People in some parts of the Northeast could also wake up to snow on Christmas morning. AccuWeather said parts of Pennsylvania, southern New York and northern New Jersey could see a brief period of patchy ice or a combination of snow, ice and rain Wednesday night (Christmas Eve) through Thursday morning (Christmas Day).

Pastelok said yet another snow star could bring more snow later this week, and “storms could bring snow and ice to parts of the Northeast and New England from Christmas night into Friday.” “Some cities could miss out on an official white Christmas by just 12 or 24 hours.”

Snowstorm Forecast: How much snow will fall during the week of Christmas?

Are you wondering how much snow is in the forecast? Use USA TODAY’s detailed winter weather forecast map below to find out where snow is expected in the coming hours and days.

Snow is sparse overall due to warm-up operations.

Overall, most parts of the country will see scattered snow over the Christmas week. “Thanks to the extensive warm-up, there will be very little snow on the ground across much of the Plains this Christmas,” Pastelok told USA TODAY.

How warm is it? High temperatures on Christmas Day are expected to be in the mid-70s in Missouri, Kansas City and St. Louis, according to National Weather Service forecast maps.

“Oklahoma City will continue to challenge or break record highs for several days in a row in the Southern Plains region by mid-to-late week,” AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said in an online forecast. “High temperatures are expected to be about 30 degrees above the historical average in the low 40s, especially in this city. High temperatures this week are expected to be in the low 70s.”

Introducing the perfect place for a white Christmas

Forecasts say snow has already fallen in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and is expected to continue until Christmas.

For example, the National Weather Service reported that 3 inches of snow fell in Minneapolis on December 23rd. There’s more on the way.

“The next chance of precipitation will arrive late Christmas night across northern and central Minnesota. A wintry mix could ease travel into Christmas night and into the morning of Friday, Dec. 26,” the Minnesota Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, heavy snow may fall in the western mountains.

“Parts of the central Rocky Mountains are experiencing a snow drought, but snow is finally starting to fall, and more snow is likely to accumulate on Christmas Day,” Pastelok said. “Flying snowflakes really get you in the holiday spirit. Fresh powder is perfect for the ski mountain.”

Further west, California’s Sierra Nevada mountains are bracing for heavy snowfall this week, measured in feet rather than inches. The National Weather Service announced that “heavy snow is expected to fall in the Sierra Nevada through Thursday, December 25th.”

Snow levels in the Sierra will drop midweek, with 1 to 2 feet of snow accumulating in Northern California’s Donner Pass and up to 10 feet on Sierra ridges, leading to whiteout conditions and extended road closures, according to AccuWeather.

The future of Arm and AI at the edge

0

Arm Holdings is positioning itself at the center of AI transformation. In a wide-ranging podcast interview, Vince Jesaitis, Arm’s head of global government affairs, challenged company decision-makers to consider the company’s international strategy, how the company sees the evolution of AI and the future of the industry.

From cloud to edge

Arm believes the AI market is entering a new phase, moving from cloud-based processing to edge computing. While much of the media attention has so far focused on large data centers where models are trained and accessed from the cloud, Jesaitis said most AI computing, especially inference tasks, is likely to become increasingly distributed.

“The next ‘aha’ moment in AI will be when local AI processing occurs on devices that were previously unimaginable,” Jesaitis said. These devices range from smartphones and earphones to automotive and industrial sensors. Arm’s IP is literally already embedded in these devices. Arm is the company that, in the past year alone, has been the IP behind more than 30 billion chips placed in every conceivable type of device around the world.

There are several benefits to bringing AI to the edge environment, and the team at Arm cites three main “advantages.” First, the inherent efficiency of low-power Arm chips means lower power bills to run and cool your compute. This minimizes the environmental footprint of the technology.

Second, placing the AI in a local setting results in significantly lower latency (latency is determined by the distance between the local operation and the site of the AI model). Arm points to applications such as features such as instant conversion, dynamic scheduling of control systems, and near-instant triggering of safety functions (for example, in IIoT configurations).

Third, “keep it local” means sensitive data is never sent outside the company. While the benefits are clear for any organization in a highly regulated industry, the increasing number of data breaches means that even companies operating with relatively secure data sets are looking to reduce their attack surface.

Arm silicon is optimized for power-constrained devices and suitable for the computing needs on the ground, the company said. In the future, AI may be embedded throughout the environment, rather than being concentrated in data centers operated by large providers.

military and world government

Arm sees this level of engagement as an important part of its role and actively engages with policymakers around the world. As governments continue to compete to attract semiconductor investment, issues of supply chains and centralized dependence are still fresh in the minds of many policymakers from the time of the COVID-19 outbreak.

It lobbies for workforce development and is currently working with White House policymakers on an education coalition to build an “AI-enabled workforce.” National independence in technology depends as much on the capabilities of the workforce as on the availability of hardware.

Mr Jesaitis pointed out the differences between the regulatory environments. The US is prioritizing what local governments call acceleration and innovation, while the EU is leading on safety, privacy, security, and legally enforced standards of practice. Arm aims to find a middle ground between these approaches and further advance the AI industry while building products that meet stringent global compliance needs.

The enterprise case for edge AI

The case for integrating Arm’s edge-focused AI architecture into enterprise transformation strategies is compelling. The company emphasizes its ability to deliver scalable AI without having to centralize it in the cloud, and is also pushing for investments in hardware-level security. This means you can avoid issues such as memory abuse (which is outside the control of users connected to a centralized AI model).

Of course, sectors that are already highly regulated in terms of data practices are unlikely to see relaxed governance in the future, and vice versa is almost inevitable. Over the next few years, we will see stricter regulations across all industries, as well as stiffer penalties for non-compliance. However, to balance that out, companies that can demonstrate the inherent safety and security of their systems will have a significant competitive advantage. It is in this regulatory landscape that Arm is considering adapting its own and local edge AI.

Additionally, ESG goals will become increasingly important in Europe and Scandinavia. This is where the power dissipation nature of the Arm chip provides a huge advantage. This is a trend that even US hyperscalers are responding to. AWS’ latest SHALAR series of low-cost, low-power Arm-based platforms exists to meet just that demand.

Arm is working with cloud hyperscalers like AWS and Microsoft to produce chips that combine efficiency with the horsepower needed for AI applications, the company said.

What’s next for Arm and the industry?

Jesaitis pointed to several trends that companies may see over the next 12 to 18 months. Global AI exports, particularly from the United States and the Middle East, ensure that large providers can meet local demand for AI. Arm is a company that can supply both major providers in these situations (as part of its product portfolio) and meet the growing demand for edge-based AI.

Jesaitis also sees edge AI as something of a sustainability hero in an industry increasingly criticized for its environmental impact. Arm technology’s biggest market is in low-power computing for mobile, making it inherently “green.” Businesses want to meet their energy goals without sacrificing compute, and Arm offers a way to combine performance and responsibility.

Redefining “smart”

Arm’s vision for edge AI means that computers and the software running on them are context-aware, cheap to run, secure by design, and highly responsive thanks to near-zero network latency. “We used to call things ‘smart’ because they were online, but now they’re going to be really intelligent,” Jesaitis said.

California faces ‘significant risk’ from severe weather

play

SAN DIEGO — A series of storms threatens California with heavy rain and strong winds, as forecasters warn that a major atmospheric river could cause life-threatening flash flooding and power outages in parts of the state.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on social media on December 23 that he has ordered state agencies and emergency management officials to deploy crews, equipment and resources before more rain and intense winds hit the state. The National Weather Service said a “moderate to high risk” of flash flooding is expected in Southern California on Dec. 24.

Areas including the San Fernando Valley, Downtown Los Angeles, Simi Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Conejo Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Santa Paula, Altadena and Glendora are at “highest risk” of life-threatening flooding and rock and mudslides, according to the Los Angeles/Oxnard Weather Service.

Parts of Los Angeles County burned by wildfires earlier this year remain vulnerable to flash floods, mudslides and debris flows. Local authorities issued an evacuation advisory for residents in the burn area on the morning of December 23rd.

The storm strengthened after heavy rain had already caused flooding and closed roads in Northern California over the weekend. At least one person was killed in Redding, California, authorities said.

The Shasta County Coroner’s Office on Dec. 22 identified the deceased as Richard Michael Wilsey, 74. Redding Mayor Mike Littau told the Record Searchlight, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Wilsey was trapped inside the car and alerted emergency dispatchers. Littau said Wilsey told the dispatcher that water had started getting into her car before the call went off.

“RPD (Redding Police Department) officers swam out into the water, broke the window and pulled the victim back to shore,” Littau said, adding that CPR was performed, but medical personnel were unable to revive Wilsey.

Police, fire and other city personnel also “worked through the night to respond to power outages and flooding incidents and rescue multiple people stranded by rapidly rising water levels,” the city said in a statement.

Strong winds hit Northern California

The San Francisco Bay Area Weather Bureau announced that it has issued a strong wind warning and wind advisory from 4:00 pm local time on December 23rd to 4:00 am local time on December 24th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that “strong winds could cause trees to fall, power lines to snap, property damage to occur, and large-scale power outages to occur.”

Wind gusts of up to 105 mph are possible along the Pacific Coast, San Francisco and interior Monterey County, the weather service said. Meanwhile, wind gusts up to 55 mph are possible in the interior North Bay, interior Bay Area, and South Bay.

More rain and flooding to come in California

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said heavy, powerful rain is expected as an atmospheric river flows over the state, accompanied by a coastal low. A prolonged period of heavy snow will cover the Sierra Nevada mountains through Friday, making conditions difficult for vacationers heading up the mountain pass. Meanwhile, strong wind conditions across the region are likely to cause trees to fall and power outages, the center said.

Reading Police Sergeant Paul Slagle said local authorities were also preparing for the next round of wet weather.

Up to 2 inches of rain is expected to fall in Redding as the next round of rainfall arrives in Northern California on Tuesday, Dec. 23, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento. A flood watch is in effect until Friday, December 26th, for multiple areas in northern and central California, including Shasta County.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rain is expected to continue over Southern California on December 24th. Precipitation there could cause severe and widespread flash flooding, resulting in flood watches for some parts of the region.

“Additionally, areas that do not normally experience flash flooding may be flooded,” the Bureau of Meteorology said. “Furthermore, lives and property are at great risk.”

Evacuation advisory issued for Ventura County

According to the USA TODAY Network’s Ventura County Star, Ventura County officials issued evacuation warnings and advisories, urging residents to remain vigilant and prepare for heavy rain.

The strong winter storm is expected to peak between the night of December 23 and Wednesday the 24th, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Another round of heavy rain could bring heavy rain to the region from Christmas Eve night into Christmas Day. Showers are likely to continue until Saturday 27th December.

Coastal and valley areas could see 4 to 8 inches of rain in just five days. Up to 12 inches of rain can fall in hilly and mountainous areas, and precipitation can exceed 1 inch per hour at times.

“This is a lot of rain that will continue for several days,” said Ariel Cohen, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California.

Following weather system could produce fountains and tornadoes

Dr. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said one thing that struck him about this week’s system was the highly unusual risk of severe thunderstorms.

In a social media post, Swain referenced an advisory issued Tuesday morning by the National Weather Service’s San Francisco Bay Area office, saying, “Multiple low-top supercells could produce very strong wind gusts and even some tornadoes.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center said there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms along California’s coastline late Wednesday into Friday, with a 2 percent chance of producing tornadoes or fountains, the agency said. Still, the possibility of cells becoming isolated as a cold front passes through indicates the potential for severe thunderstorms to develop and rotate, especially in the late morning and early afternoon, the center said.

“This system appears to be even more advantageous than the first system, which was much more unstable,” the center said. “This is the most severe weather-friendly environment we’ve seen in a while.”

President Trump needs help from Congress for $2,000 tariff dividend checks

President Trump has been touting $2,000 tariff dividend checks for months. White House adviser Kevin Hassett told CBS News that he plans to present his proposal to Congress in 2026.

play

President Donald Trump may have a $2,000 tariff dividend check on his 2026 wish list. But Congress will have something to say about it.

President Trump has been discussing a plan to return tariff dividends to Americans in 2026 for months.

“Next year is expected to be the biggest tax refund season in history, and we’ve taken in literally trillions of dollars that we’re going to refund in tariffs,” President Trump said at a Cabinet meeting on Dec. 2. “In addition to debt reduction, we intend to give good dividends to the people.”

However, there is still no guarantee that these checks will or should be issued. On Dec. 18, the president announced that he would send $1,776 checks, known as the “Warrior Dividend,” to the nation’s 1.45 million service members before Christmas. Those funds were provided by the Pentagon, the Pentagon said.

But the tariff dividend checks will likely require a bill to pass Congress before it can be signed by the president, White House Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday, Dec. 21.

“The deficit compared to last year is down $600 billion, and in the summer we weren’t so sure there would be room for such a check. But now we’re confident there is room for such a check. So we expect the president to bring a proposal to Congress in the new year to make that happen,” said Hassett, chairman of the White House National Economic Council.

How will the Administrative Fund check the $2,000 tariff dividend?

President Trump said the money for the checks would come from customs revenue, but Hassett said that was just one possibility.

“We get taxes, we get tariffs, we get revenue from a lot of places, and Congress decides how to spend those money,” he told Brennan. “That’s diversion. So this has to be diversion money.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the same thing to Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” on Nov. 16. He previously said in a Nov. 12 interview on Fox News that discussions at the White House included rebates for “for example, households with incomes under $100,000.”

Will I get a $2,000 dividend check?

I don’t really know yet.

Trump said the tariff revenue “could lead to some rebates, but what we want to do is pay down the debt.” The rebates will arrive “in the middle of next year,” he said.

But some experts believe the test is unwise and unlikely to be carried out, mainly because the numbers don’t make sense.

Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, estimates that the tariff dividend could be up to more than $300 billion. “The only problem is, new tariffs have raised $120 billion so far,” he said in a Nov. 9 post on X, while net revenue from tariffs for fiscal year 2026, which begins Oct. 1, will be about $216 billion.

The Tax Foundation estimates that President Trump’s tariffs will raise revenue by $2.1 trillion over the next 10 years, but that drops to $1.6 trillion after foreign retaliation and other negative economic impacts are factored in.

The Congressional Budget Office projects that accelerating debt payments and reducing interest payments will generate $3.3 trillion in tariff revenue over 10 years, totaling about $4 trillion to the government.

Scott Linthicum, vice president of general economics at the libertarian Cato Institute think tank, said in a Nov. 17 post on

If many of President Trump’s tariffs are struck down by the Supreme Court, plans for a tariff dividend check could also be blocked, but the Supreme Court appears to be questioning whether President Trump has the authority to impose tariffs when it hears arguments on Nov. 5.

In July, Congress has a chance to pass the tariff rebate proposed by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mississippi) in the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025. The bill, which has not yet been passed, would impose rebate checks of at least $600 per individual on U.S. residents. A family of four can receive up to $2,400.

CBS News’ Brennan summed it up after Hassett spoke about the need for Congress to pass the bill: “That means don’t count on it,” she said.

2 killed, 20 injured in Pennsylvania nursing home explosion

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. — A “catastrophic” explosion at a suburban Philadelphia nursing home on Tuesday killed at least two people, injured 20 and left the facility partially destroyed, officials and officials said.

At least two people were killed in the explosion at the Bristol Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bristol Township, a Philadelphia suburb, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said at a news conference. Police reported a third death late Tuesday, but later confirmed the victim was alive.

Bristol County Police Chief Charles Winnik said 20 people were injured. Those who were reported missing earlier in the day have been found and are alive, he added.

“The search is over now that everyone has been searched,” he said around 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred around 2:19 p.m. ET, Bristol County Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said. Bucks County 911 received a report of an explosion at a nursing home with multiple injuries, the Bucks County Courier-Times, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported.

The identity of the victim was not immediately known.

Part of the facility, also known as Silver Lake Healthcare Center, collapsed, according to the county. Video from the scene showed flames shooting from the building shortly after the explosion.

The explosion occurred while crews from local energy company PECO were at the scene to check on a strong odor of gas that was reported just after 2 p.m., the power company said. PECO crews cut off natural gas and electricity to the facility after the explosion.

Shapiro said an investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway. The state Public Utilities Commission was working with PECO on the ground, the governor said.

“We tentatively believe that a gas leak was the cause,” Shapiro said at a news conference. “The explosion was truly devastating.”

Dippolito said authorities continued rescue efforts into the evening and had not yet moved into recovery efforts.

Dippolito said reports of an explosion at the nursing home “blared on the radio” after the incident.

Bristol Township Fire and Rescue Department immediately responded to the scene and determined that a large structural collapse had occurred, with multiple persons trapped. Dippolito said fire officials went into “rescue mode.”

“They pulled many residents out of the building through windows and doors and became trapped in stairwells and elevator shafts,” the fire chief said. “The people who were outside the building were already injured, and the people who were removed by the fire department were handed over to police officers… They were literally carrying patients while we were handing them over.”

Two people were rescued from the collapsed building in the basement, Dippolito said. Dippolito said crews also felt a “strong odor of gas” at the time and evacuated people from the building before a second explosion occurred about 30 seconds later.

“There was another explosion and fire,” the fire chief said. “Thanks to the fire, we were able to pinpoint where the leak was coming from in the basement and were able to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building.”

They rescued as many people as possible, he said. Outside, first responders shouted to nearby onlookers, “Stand back! Stand back!”

Both Shapiro and Dippolito praised the emergency response to the explosion.

Officials said firefighters climbed ladders to rescue people from the facility and handed them over to police. Dippolito said one officer carried them on his shoulders.

“Right after the explosion, I saw what true heroism is,” Shapiro said. “Firefighters rushed to the scene to contain the explosion, extinguish the fire and, most importantly, rescue people.”

Bristol Township officials declared a local state of emergency Tuesday following the explosion and collapsed building.

Dippolito said the declaration will allow authorities to bring in additional resources, such as specialized equipment to help stabilize buildings and search for debris. He added that workers are currently deploying heavy equipment to the site to move heavy debris.

This township is located in Lower Bucks County, a few miles from Philadelphia and near the New Jersey border. This nursing home is located near Lower Bucks Hospital.

While authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion, an employee at the nursing home told the Bucks County Courier-Times that she smelled a strong odor of gas in the facility’s activity room just before an explosion from the basement blew out the ceiling around her and the residents.

PECO crews responded to a report of a gas odor at the nursing home just before 2 p.m. ET, the utility said in a statement. The explosion occurred while crews were on scene.

“PECO crews shut off natural gas and electricity to the facility to ensure the safety of first responders and local residents,” the utility said. “It is unclear at this time whether PECO equipment or natural gas was involved in this incident.”

Nearby residents said they heard and felt their homes shake after the explosion.

Joe Westergon, who was home when he heard the explosion several blocks away, told the Courier-Journal that he helped carry six injured residents to safety.

“I would take them to the curb and sit them down,” Westergon said. “I tried to keep them as calm as possible… They’ll live, but they were pretty torn up and some were bleeding.”

Nurses from neighboring Lower Bucks Hospital were at the scene, providing blankets and assistance to evacuated residents.

According to Medicare.gov, Silver Lake is a for-profit nursing home with approximately 174 licensed beds. The federal agency gives it an overall rating of “below average,” based on health inspections, staffing and quality standards.

According to Medicare.gov, the most recent fire safety inspection was conducted in September 2024 and did not yield a rating for fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The facility moved under new ownership in early December, Shapiro said at a news conference. According to the governor, the state Department of Health conducted an inspection of the facility on December 10th.

“There was a plan in place for these new facility owners to upgrade the standards of this facility,” Shapiro said. “It is clear that work will continue with the new owners to ensure that we do what is necessary to keep the residents of this and other facilities safe.”

The facility’s owner, Saber Healthcare Group, said it is working with local emergency officials and “continues to prioritize the health of our residents, staff and their families.”

At least for now, a $1.7 billion jackpot is planned.

The fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball history is still being wagered on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, after no tickets matched the six numbers drawn in the Dec. 22 drawing.

The estimated cash value of the award is $781.3 million, payable as a one-time cash lump sum or annuity payments over 29 years. In any case, if you win the prizes, the players will have a fun holiday.

According to Powerball, the jackpot has been won “once on Christmas Eve (2011) and four times on Christmas Day (1996, 2002, 2010, 2013).”

“Just like the holiday season, Powerball is a game that inspires people to dream big and hope for a brighter future,” Matt Strahan, Powerball Product Group Chairman and Iowa Lottery CEO, said ahead of the drawing.

“We hope this jackpot growth sparks excitement, joy, and, most importantly, goodwill for everyone. A portion of every ticket helps support programs and services that benefit local communities,” he added.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Powerball drawing.

When is the next Powerball drawing?

Barry Manilow has lung cancer. What you need to know

0

play

Barry Manilow was diagnosed with cancer spots in his lungs early on and is on the road to recovery.

The 82-year-old singer revealed on Instagram that a long battle with bronchitis led to the discovery of the cancerous plaque.

“Even though my bronchitis has cleared up and I’m back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI to make sure everything was okay,” he said in a statement on Instagram. “The MRI revealed a cancerous spot in my left lung that needed to be removed. It was sheer luck (and great doctors) to catch it so early. That’s good news.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the second most common cancer diagnosis.

Here’s what you need to know about this disease.

How common is lung cancer?

Lung cancer mainly occurs in older people. According to the American Cancer Society, most people diagnosed with the disease are over 65 years old. Cancer is responsible for approximately 1 in 5 deaths. Each year, more people die from lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined.

Testing for lung cancer is of the utmost importance. Dr. Saiama N. Waqar, a professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a thoracic oncologist at the Siteman Cancer Center, previously told USA TODAY that the earlier you get the disease, the better your chances of survival.

The biggest risk for lung cancer is smoking. According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that 85% of lung cancer deaths are related to smoking. Former smokers are still at risk. “Even if someone quits[smoking]the risk doesn’t go away. It still needs to be evaluated,” Waqar said.

Manilow had been a smoker for 30 years. “I started when I was nine years old. I grew up in Brooklyn,” he told the Evening Standard.

What are the symptoms of lung cancer?

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of lung cancer include:

  • A new cough that won’t go away.
  • Chest pain.
  • Coughing up blood, even if it’s a small amount.
  • Hoarse voice.
  • shortness of breath.
  • Wheezing.

When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, you may experience the following signs and symptoms:

  • Bone pain.
  • headache.
  • Lose weight without effort.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Swelling of the face and neck.

What actions can you take to prevent lung cancer?

Due to advances in early detection and treatment, and because more people are quitting or never starting to smoke, the number of new lung cancer cases is decreasing, and so are deaths.

The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of lung cancer is to stop smoking. “If you don’t smoke now, don’t. And if you do, quit,” Waqar says. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers resources to help you quit smoking, including access to counseling services. If possible, you should also try to avoid second-hand smoke.

Additionally, because exposure to radon gas and asbestos are risk factors for lung cancer, the CDC recommends getting your home tested for radon and taking steps to reduce occupational exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos.

Priscilla Presley poses with Riley Keough and grandchildren in rare photo

Priscilla Presley” showed her blended family (her late daughter Lisa Marie Presley and her three grown children with ex-husbands Danny Keough and Michael Lockwood) celebrating the holidays together.

play

Priscilla Presley is showing family solidarity as she faces what her lawyers called “outrageous allegations” in her civil suit.

In an Instagram post on Dec. 22, the Presley family matriarch (ex-wife of the late Elvis Presley) shared a photo of her blended family, including her three granddaughters, sitting around a dinner table.

Presley captioned the photo: “Holidays 2025 and unbreakable family ties.”

The undated photo shows longtime family friend Jerry Schilling with his arm wrapped around Priscilla’s, while her late daughter Lisa Marie Presley’s fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, stands behind her. Lisa Marie’s first husband, Danny Keogh, is seen standing next to Lockwood, holding the man in his right arm and holding their daughter Riley Keogh, who is holding a baby in his left arm.

The 36-year-old reportedly gave birth to her second child with husband Ben Smith-Petersen earlier this year.

To her left, twin half-sisters Harper and Finley Lockwood, 17, sit at a table.

The rare family photo was released a week after Priscilla’s lawyer slammed the “shameful” allegations made in one of several lawsuits she and other members of the Circle are fighting. She is embroiled in a legal dispute with former business associates Bridget Kruse and Kevin Fialko, who she accused in a July 2024 lawsuit of elder abuse and misappropriation of more than $1 million in funds.

Within a month of filing this lawsuit, Kruse and Fialco sued Priscilla for more than $50 million in damages, alleging that Priscilla breached her business agreement after spending a year “devoted full-time to supporting, repairing, stabilizing, and improving Presley’s financial situation.”

On December 17, Priscilla’s lawyers accused Kruse and Fialco of the actions of John Travolta and his late wife Kelly Preston after they raised allegations that John Travolta and his late wife Kelly Preston paid Riley Keough for eggs in an amended complaint filed in an ongoing lawsuit against Priscilla’s son Navarron Garibaldi Garcia.

“After losing motion after motion in this case and unsuccessfully seeking to have Presley’s attorney of record, Marty Singer, disqualified from representing her in this case, Bridget Kruse, Kevin Fialko, and their co-conspirators have proven that there is no hurdle or ethical line they are willing to cross to avoid significant liability to Priscilla Presley,” Singer said in a statement. To USA TODAY.

“In a completely inappropriate effort to unduly pressure Presley to retract legitimate and true claims, Kruse and her co-conspirators also filed charges against Presley’s son, cousin, and assistant,” the statement continued. “The recent outrageous allegations are completely unrelated to the claims in this case. The actions of Kruse, Fialco, and their new attorneys (they are the fourth attorney) are shameful and will surely be addressed in court.”

Representatives for Mr. Keough and Mr. Travolta did not respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment.

Who is Priscilla Presley’s grandchild?

Lisa Marie Presley was married to Danny Keough from 1988 to 1994 and gave birth to their first child, Riley, in May 1989. Three years later, a son, Benjamin Keogh, was born. He died by suicide in July 2020 at the age of 27.

Lisa Marie and Michael Lockwood were married from 2006 to 2016. Twin daughters were born in October 2008. Several years after their divorce was finalized, Lisa Marie passed away from an intestinal blockage on January 12, 2023.

Riley Keough has had a huge career in Hollywood since co-starring with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in 2010’s The Runaways.

She has appeared in indies and blockbusters alike, from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road to 2016’s American Honey, 2018’s Under the Silver Lake, and 2020’s Zola. She also starred in the lead role in Amazon Prime’s Daisy Jones and the Six, for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Most recently, Keough was part of the cast of the sure-fire awards season contender Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler.

Rob Reiner and wife Michelle Reiner’s death certificate released

0

As the investigation into the alleged murders of film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner continues, the final completed death certificate provides insight into Los Angeles County authorities’ findings.

First responders determined the time of death for the 78-year-old Reiner as Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3:45 p.m., according to a copy of the Reiners’ death certificates obtained by USA TODAY on Dec. 23. Meanwhile, the producer’s wife (70 years old) was pronounced dead at 3:46 p.m.

Reiner’s marital status at the time of his death is listed as “married,” but his wife’s death certificate lists him as “widow.”

Their son Jake was named as the informant in their deaths. The couple was cremated on December 19th.

Death certificates found that Reiner and his wife both died of “multiple sharp force injuries” at their California home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where they were both charged with murder, as previously revealed by preliminary findings from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Both underwent autopsies.

Rob Reiner’s wife Michelle’s death certificate details her tragic final moments

The county’s deputy medical examiner reported that Reiner and Singer Reiner died within minutes of their knife injuries, but the date and time of the fatal injuries in their home is listed as “unknown.”

Law enforcement and prosecutors said the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, used a knife to stab his parents to death “nearly in the early morning hours.” The couple was found in the master bedroom of their home, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Nick Reiner remains in jail without bail after being arrested on December 14 on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned on January 7th.

What do Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner’s children say?

The Reiners’ children, Jake and Romy Reiner, said a memorial service for their parents will be held at a later date. Earlier, in his first public statement on December 17, he spoke of the “unimaginable pain” caused by the death of his parents.

According to TMZ and People, they said, “Words can’t even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of every day.” “The horrifying and devastating loss of our parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience. They were more than just our parents, they were our best friends.”

“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received from family and friends, as well as people from all walks of life,” the statement continued. “We are now asking for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

Rob Reiner is also survived by Tracy Reiner, a daughter from ex-wife Penny Marshall, whom Rob Reiner adopted.

Hollywood mourned the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner

Mr. Reiner has been widely remembered across Hollywood for his personal kindness, political advocacy, and influential work as a director.

In particular, from 1986 to 1992, Reiner continued his meteoric rise, directing five films that are now considered all-time classics (Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men).

Mr. Reiner also directed films such as “The American President” and “This Is Spinal Tap.” The latter was a mockumentary about a fictional rock band and was Reiner’s first directorial role after he was known as an actor. The long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continue, was released in 2025 and was the last film Reiner released before his death.

Hollywood stars including Billy Crystal, Larry David and Martin Short paid heartfelt tributes to the couple two days after their deaths.

“By absorbing everything he learned from his father Karl and mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner became not only a great comedian, but a master storyteller,” the Dec. 16 statement said. “No other director has the range he has. From comedies to dramas to mockumentaries to documentaries, he was always at the top. He captivated audiences. Audiences believed in him. They lined up to see his films.”

The statement further said, “His greatest gift was freedom.”

US GDP growth was strong in the third quarter before the government shutdown

play

The U.S. economy expanded strongly in the third quarter, just before the federal government shutdown threatened to derail growth and employment.

The Department of Commerce announced on Tuesday, Dec. 23, that gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 4.3% last quarter. The figure was the first estimate of GDP for the third quarter, delayed by the government shutdown. GDP estimates will be revised as additional data becomes available.

The figure was significantly higher than the 3.3% annualized increase expected by economists compiled by Trading Economics.

GDP is a measure of all goods and services produced in an economy. To measure the strength of the economy as a whole, or its components, we compare the growth rate of a given quarter with the same period a year ago.

The 4.3% growth in late summer “reflects increases in consumer spending, exports, and government spending, partially offset by declines in investment,” the Commerce Department said in a news release. Imports decreased in the quarter.

“The strong third quarter is unlikely to be sustained,” Oliver Allen, senior U.S. economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in an analysis published after the announcement.

Allen added: “Growth truly appears to be underpinned by continued consumer resilience and the AI (capex) boom, even though the revised results show GDP growth in 2025 will be slightly lower than the latest numbers.” “However, there are clear signs that the tide has turned in the fourth quarter, particularly in consumption.”

In a separate release after the GDP data, the Private Sector Conference Board said consumer confidence declined in December.

“Confidence declined for the fifth consecutive month as business sentiment remained negative and concerns about jobs and incomes deepened,” the Conference Board said. One of the subcomponents of the group-wide index “has now remained below 80 for 11 consecutive months, below which there are signs of recession,” the release said.

“The fourth quarter will be an unmitigated catastrophe, with the federal government shutdown hitting hard,” Christopher S. Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS LLC, said in a client note. “The market has never seen economic data fail so badly. It’s a miracle economic activity hasn’t fallen so far, given that unemployment is the highest it’s been in years.”

Still, Rapkey also emphasized that the ongoing boom in AI spending is good for the economy. “Stay tuned,” he concluded.

New Epstein dossier mentions Epstein’s jet travel with President Trump

After the Justice Department releases thousands of new Epstein files, Democrats ask, “What else is the Justice Department hiding?” This is a White House cover-up.

play

WASHINGTON – Bill Clinton had a high-profile moment when the Epstein files were first made public. Tuesday was Donald Trump’s turn.

The sitting president’s name repeatedly appeared in a new section of thousands of documents in the Justice Department’s Epstein Library released on December 23.

President Trump has flown repeatedly (at least eight times in the 1990s) on Jeffrey Epstein’s “Lolita Express.” A federal subpoena has been sent to President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion. There are other references to Trump, some of which are unconfirmed.

Four days after Trump’s team promoted Clinton’s name in the first batch of documents, the Justice Department issued a preemptive statement declaring that the new documents contained “false and sensational” accusations against Trump made before the 2020 election. “Let us be clear: this allegation is baseless and false, and if it had any credibility whatsoever, it would undoubtedly have already been used as a weapon against President Trump,” the department said.

Trump is one of many celebrities whose names are included in the thousands of new Epstein files that are required by law to be made available to the public in searchable format. The president has not been accused of any wrongdoing regarding Mr. Epstein, a wealthy and well-connected financier who was charged with trafficking underage girls for illicit sex acts.

As with previous releases, the lack of good search capabilities, the large amount of material, and the wide compilation of names as well as Epstein’s victims and survivors made it difficult to find specific items.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Justice Department lawyers are reviewing the documents to ensure that no victims are named or identified, and that it could take weeks to compile the remaining hundreds of thousands of pages. Critics, including Democratic lawmakers and victim advocacy groups, have expressed concern that authorities have not released the bill despite a Dec. 19 deadline imposed by Congress.

But the release made more mentions of Trump. None of them implicate him directly in any wrongdoing. President Trump has repeatedly denied doing anything illegal or inappropriate.

But Democrats and victim advocates seized on the new revelations as evidence that the department is trying to protect the president from embarrassing revelations related to Epstein. The two were close friends in the 1990s and early 2000s, but had a falling out.

“Donald Trump believes our investigation is a hoax and should be over,” Robert Garcia, the ranking Democratic member of the committee, wrote on X. “Mr. President, we are just getting started.”

Only Epstein and Maxwell were indicted. She was convicted of colluding with Epstein to lure young girls on trips for illicit sex and is serving a 20-year prison sentence. Authorities concluded that Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Here, USA TODAY reporters review five key takeaways from the Dec. 23 data dump as they review thousands of new Epstein documents.

Justice Department mentions Epstein’s ‘co-conspirators’

Just days after Epstein’s arrest in 2019, federal agents wrote to each other about searching for “10 co-conspirators” and discussed plans to issue subpoenas to them, according to newly released emails.

On July 9, an anonymous staff member mentioned that three of these individuals had been spotted in Florida, one in Boston, one in New York “last night,” and one in Connecticut. The identities of these co-conspirators are largely unknown, but other email threads mention interviews with Maxwell and Les Wexner, Epstein’s longtime business partner and the billionaire behind Victoria’s Secret.

Another thread mentions “Brunel,” possibly referring to Jean-Luc Brunel, a French model scout with ties to Epstein.

The third summary document mentions 10 subpoenas, two of which are pilots. Lawrence “Larry” Visoski is pictured elsewhere in the files and was Epstein’s longtime pilot, but none of the documents explicitly name him as a co-conspirator.

Trump flew on Epstein’s jet ‘more times than previously reported’

One email, dated Jan. 7, 2020, said an unidentified federal prosecutor said newly obtained flight records show Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet eight times between 1993 and 1996. During that time, Mr. Trump was a high-flying real estate developer who frequently interacted with Epstein after his 1992 divorce from his first wife, Ivana Trump, and through his divorce from his second wife, Marla Maples. 1999.

An assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York wrote that Trump flew on Epstein’s jet “more times than has been previously reported (or known to us), including during the expected period of prosecution in the Maxwell case.”

Maxwell was also on at least four of those flights with Trump.

Prosecutors said Trump “is listed as having traveled at various times with Marla Maples, her daughter Tiffany, and her son Eric.”

“On one flight in 1993, he and Epstein were the only two listed as passengers. On another flight, the only passengers were Epstein, Trump, and a “then-20-year-old,” whose name was redacted.

Regarding the other two planes, prosecutors wrote, “Two of the passengers were women who could serve as potential witnesses in the Maxwell case. We had just finished reviewing the complete records (very small scripts, over 100 pages), and we did not want any surprises like this to arise in the future.”

Federal authorities subpoena Epstein evidence from Mar-a-Lago

On October 5, 2021, federal prosecutors in New York subpoenaed President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, to provide testimony and evidence in the criminal case against Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

summons from after that U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss asked for “all employment records” of the people whose names were redacted.

Trump, who was friends with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, said Epstein “stole” female staffers at Mar-a-Lago to work for him.

Virginia Roberts Giuffre, one of Epstein’s most outspoken accusers and who died by suicide in April, said Maxwell recruited her to work for him when she was 16 and working as a locker room assistant at Mar-a-Lago.

Police report mentions possible intimidation of witnesses in Epstein case

One of the documents in the 2019 federal case against Epstein describes what police called potential witness intimidation during the 2006 Florida investigation.

A Palm Beach County police report said a woman whose name has been redacted and accused Epstein of abuse received phone calls lasting eight, 14 and 12 minutes within an hour on March 7, 2006. The name of the person who allegedly made the call was also redacted.

The report does not say what was said during the phone call. However, the officer who filled out the application said the call records were “consistent with what the victim described to me on the day of the threat.”

The same number also called “Epstein’s assistants” and New York businesses with ties to Epstein, according to police reports.

Epstein eventually pleaded guilty to pimping in 2008, but federal prosecutors agreed not to charge him at the time.

Hotline information alleging Trump-Epstein relationship and possible wrongdoing

One call to the FBI hotline from August 3, 2020, focuses on an anonymous person who said he received a call several weeks ago from a “detective from the NYPD FBI Sex Trafficking Task Force” who provided information about a 1984 sex trafficking scandal in Lake Michigan.

FBI interrogation forms say the caller described Trump as a witness in the incident.

In another call to the FBI in October 2020, Trump was described as having berated the limousine driver who picked him up and took him to the Dallas-Fort Worth airport in 1995.

It could not be determined whether the caller was referring to himself or someone else. However, the caller said the limousine driver “reported that some of the things President Trump said on his cell phone during the ride were very concerning,” the report said.

The driver reported that “within seconds of pulling the limousine into the median, and within seconds of pulling him from the vehicle, I sustained injuries as a result of his comments.”

The driver also “noticed that President Trump kept mentioning the name ‘Jeffrey’ during the phone call and that he was abusing a girl,” the FBI report said.

Looking for a comprehensive home warranty? American Home Shield is a leading provider. High coverage, comprehensive service plans, and unknown pre-existing condition coverage make this company a good choice for many homeowners. But is it right for you?

This American Home Shield review details costs, coverage, exclusions, and more so you can decide if this home warranty company is right for your home.

About American Home Shield

American Home Shield (AHS) is well known in the home warranty industry and offers coverage in every state except Alaska. AHS is known for its high coverage limits and inclusion of unknown pre-existing conditions, making it ideal for homeowners who want maximum protection for their home. Plans start at $49.99 per month for system-only coverage and go up to $99.99 per month for comprehensive ShieldPlatinum plans that include additional features like roof leak protection and HVAC tuning.

AHS offers great coverage, but it comes at a price. Monthly costs are higher than most competitors, with a standard service fee of $125 approximately $50 more than the average $75 per case. Although it costs more, comprehensive coverage is hard to beat.

Pros and cons of American Home Shield

Strong Points:

  • Covers unknown existing diseases
  • High total coverage limit of $50,000
  • Up to $4,000 per appliance; up to $5,000 per HVAC system

Cons:

  • Monthly fees are higher than competitors
  • High service charge of $125
  • No appliance-only plans available

American Home Shield Alternatives

American Home Shield is the best option for homeowners who want the most comprehensive coverage. Because AHS covers unknown pre-existing conditions, it is also an ideal option for new homeowners purchasing older homes with unknown histories. However, if you want the most comprehensive coverage, this provider will be expensive.

If you want a more affordable option, Liberty Home Guard or Select Home Warranty may be better options.

American Home Shield plans and pricing

American Home Shield comes in three plans: a one-system only plan and a two-combo plan. American Home Shield’s home warranty plans start at $49.99 per month to cover only the most basic systems and go up to $99.99 per month for comprehensive ShieldPlatinum systems and appliance plans. All plans include a high coverage limit of $50,000 (total) per year.

The prices in the table below reflect a $125 service call charge, which is approximately $50 more per claim than our competitors. There is an option to lower the service fee to $100, but each plan increases by $10 per month.

American Home Shield Discount

American Home Shield offers discounts to active military and veterans, AARP members, and those who want coverage for multiple properties. AHS also has a referral program that gives you a $25 Amazon gift card for every referral.

American Home Shield add-on coverage

American Home Shield’s plans are powerful, but they don’t cover everything. AHS offers six add-ons ranging from $5 per month to an additional $24. These add-ons are more expensive than what competitors offer (often less than $10 per add-on), so add them only when you need them.

What does American Home Shield cover?

ShieldSilver is AHS’s most basic coverage option, which only includes your home’s core systems, such as plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems. ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum include the ShieldSilver system, and both cover the same 28 systems and appliances. The main difference is that ShieldPlatinum comes with additional benefits like roof leak protection, HVAC tune-ups, and code violation and permit coverage (which we don’t think are covered by other providers).

  • HVAC (heating and cooling system): Air conditioners, ductwork, heat pumps, furnaces, mini-splits, geothermal systems.
  • Electrical system: Outlets, built-in exhaust fans, light switches, doorbells, wiring, breaker boxes, ceiling fans, and garage door openers.
  • Piping system: Water heaters, water pipes, permanent drain pumps, gas pipes, drain pipes, toilets, shower heads, ejector pumps, plumbing stops, etc.
  • Kitchen appliances: Refrigerator, range, oven, stove, dishwasher, built-in kitchen extractor fan, built-in microwave, garbage disposal, instant hot/cold water dispenser.
  • Laundry appliances: washer and dryer.

If you choose ShieldPlatinum, you get all of the above, plus:

  • unlimited ac refrigerant
  • $1,000 roof leak repair coverage
  • Coverage limit of $4,000 or more per appliance
  • Coverage for breaches, permits, and changes up to $250 per period

What American Home Shield Doesn’t Cover

American Home Shield has a standard list of exclusions, but unlike most home warranty providers, it covers pre-existing conditions as long as the known conditions are unknown. The following items are not expected to be covered by the AHS Home Warranty:

  • Cosmetic damage and damage that does not affect the main functions of the product
  • Problems caused by misuse, vandalism, pests and pets
  • Known pre-existing disease
  • Failure due to system or appliance not being sized correctly for your home
  • outdoor kitchen
  • smart home system
  • chimney and fireplace

How to file a claim with American Home Shield

American Home Shield has a standard 30-day waiting period during which you are not eligible to make a claim. Once this period has elapsed, you can begin the claim process for systems or appliances that have failed due to normal wear and tear. The easiest way to do this is to visit the AHS MyAccount portal online or use the mobile app.

  • Log in to MyAccount and select the option to request service.
  • Select the item you need repaired and select the problem or symptom.
  • Please pay the service fee ($100 or $125).
  • American Home Shield will begin processing your service request.

American Home Shield rating by USA TODAY

USA TODAY’s editorial team applies rigorous in-house methodologies to evaluate and rank home warranty providers, including big names like American Home Shield. To create our list of the top 10 home warranty companies, we researched 20 of the nation’s largest providers. We created our list using factors such as plan options, coverage details, pricing, quality of service, customer satisfaction, and overall reliability.

Bottom line: Is American Home Shield right for you?

If you want comprehensive coverage and high coverage limits, AHS is your home warranty company. No other provider can match our hefty $50,000 coverage limit, which almost guarantees you won’t have to pay out-of-pocket if your home systems or appliances break down due to normal wear and tear.

The disadvantage is that the monthly insurance premium is high, as is the service fee. So if you buy a home warranty from American Home Shield and don’t use it, it will cost you money. But if you end up making one or two approved claims, it can easily pay for itself.

Garcia calls for investigation into 1996 FBI Epstein accusations

0

play

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee has asked the Justice Department’s internal watchdog to investigate new revelations that Jeffrey Epstein was first reported to the FBI for alleged sex crimes in 1996, 10 years before the agency began its official investigation.

“For survivors like Maria Farmer, their families, and all those abused by Jeffrey Epstein in the decades following these unanswered charges, this was not just a missed opportunity to investigate, but a grave betrayal by their own government,” California Representative Robert Garcia said in a letter to the Justice Department’s acting inspector general, William Breyer, on Tuesday, December 23.

Garcia’s request came after the 1996 complaint filed by Epstein defendant Maria Farmer was made public as part of the Justice Department’s extensive release of new documents in the Epstein case. In her complaint, Farmer accused Epstein of stealing photos of her sisters, ages 12 and 16, and threatening to set her house on fire if she told anyone about it.

The FBI will not open an investigation into Epstein’s grooming and trafficking of girls for another 10 years.

“Despite these damning allegations, the FBI failed to pursue a thorough investigation at the time and failed to provide even meaningful follow-up to Mr. Farmer’s charges for a full decade,” Garcia wrote.

Although Ms. Farmer’s name is redacted in the complaint, she readily admitted that she was the accuser when it was recently released as part of a series of files related to the case.

“Complainant stated that she was a professional artist and took photographs of sisters, ages 12 and 16, for her own personal work,” the complaint states. “Epstein is believed to have stolen the photos and sold them to potential buyers.”

“At the time, Epstein requested (edited) that a photo of a young girl be taken at a pool. Epstein is now threatening to burn down the house if she tells anyone about the photo (redacted).”

Epstein stole Farmer’s sister’s nudes, she claims

Farmer worked as an art scout for Epstein, according to a lawsuit filed against the government. The lawsuit alleges that during a visit to Epstein’s Ohio mansion in 1996, Epstein and his longtime mistress, Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for abusing young girls, sexually assaulted her.

Farmer’s attorney, Jennifer Freeman, said Farmer took nude or semi-nude photos of his two younger sisters in a class at the Graduate School of Art. According to Farmer’s lawsuit, when she went to Epstein’s home in Ohio, she discovered that the locked box containing the photos had been broken open and the photos were gone.

After Mr. Farmer filed his complaint, the FBI did not open an investigation into Mr. Epstein for another 10 years. That investigation was closed in 2007, and Epstein was granted a non-prosecution agreement the following year.

One of Mr Farmer’s sisters, Annie Farmer, was one of four women who testified against Mr Maxwell at his 2021 trial.

Farmer said on Dec. 19 that the release of the 1996 indictment was “a moment I’ve been waiting for for more than half my life, 30 years.”

“When I was ignored and hung by the FBI in 1996, my world changed forever and it felt like time stood still,” she said in a statement.

“Once my FBI report is finally released, I’m hopeful that I can pick up where I left off at 26.”

How powerful will the new “Trump-class battleship” be? Let’s take a look

0

President Donald Trump announced on Dec. 22 that the U.S. Navy will acquire two new battleships in the 2030s that will be “the largest we’ve ever built.”

Construction of the ship, known as the Trump-class battleship, is expected to begin in the early 2030s, according to the Department of the Army (officially known as the Department of Defense). President Trump said the ships would be part of a new “Golden Fleet” of advanced warships.

President Trump has said he would build 20 to 25 battleships. Work on the first two ships will begin immediately, he said.

Secretary of the Navy John Phelan compared the new battleships to the World War II-era Iowa-class battleships, which were a major part of the Navy’s fleet from the 1940s to the early 1990s.

But the first Trump-class battleship, known as the USS Defiant, “will be the largest, deadliest, most versatile and best-looking warship anywhere in the world’s oceans,” Phelan said.

How does the Trump-class battleship compare to other battleships?

Can’t read the graphic? Click here to reload the page.

“I’m a very aesthetic person, so the Navy will be leading the design of the ship,” Trump said during the unveiling ceremony at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

What kind of weapons will be installed on the Trump-class battleship?

President Trump said the ship’s weapons include cruise missiles, 30mm cannons, ODIN lasers and nuclear weapons. USA TODAY reported that artificial intelligence will also be a “big factor” in the ship’s capabilities.

President Trump said the new battleships are intended to be built in the United States by American citizens. “This construction will create thousands of jobs in the United States, and we’re going to get them created,” he said.

According to USNI News, the cost to build one Trump-class battleship in a U.S. shipyard could range from $10 billion to $15 billion. It is based on the size of the ship and the systems it has on board.

NPR reports that the Navy experienced some difficulties with some of the weapons systems planned for the battleship. I abandoned the railgun project in 2021. Laser technology is used on ships, but with limited deployment.

President Trump has said he could build as many as 20 Trump-class battleships, but the Navy has already built four Iowa-class battleships. The other two cars were scrapped.

The Iowa-class battleships replaced two older types of battleships: the North Carolina-class battleships and the South Dakota-class battleships.
