Jeffrey Holland, next leader of the Mormon Church, dies

0

Jeffrey R. Holland, 85, has become the next leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has been a member of the church’s governing body since 1994.

Jeffrey R. Holland, the next leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died on December 27 at the age of 85 from complications related to kidney disease, the church announced.

Holland was a member of the faith’s governing body, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Holland, who has long been a central figure in the church’s education network, gained national attention in 2021 when he instructed staff and faculty at Brigham Young University, the church’s flagship higher education institution, to take up a metaphorical “musket” to defend “marriage as the union of a man and a woman.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is also commonly known as the Mormon Church.

Born in St. George, Utah, in 1940, Holland says he grew up in an idyllic small-town setting. “If he had wanted to, he wouldn’t have gotten into trouble in that town,” Church said. “My mother would have found out before I got home.”

After serving the Church as a missionary in England as a teenager, he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in American studies from Yale University, and then began a career in the church education system. He served as president of Brigham Young from 1980 to 1989 and oversaw construction of the school’s Jerusalem Center on Mount Scopus. He became a member of the Apostles in 1994.

Holland’s 2021 speech drew protests from inside and outside the church, but his uncompromising opposition to same-sex marriage was supported by the university, which recently made the speech required reading. Holland said on a podcast last year that he was sad, if not exactly sorry, that his words had upset some people.

“If anyone was hurt, and I know there were some people in that interaction, then I was hurt,” he said. “For the past three years, I’ve been crying.”

Holland was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Terry, who died in 2023, and is survived by the couple’s three children, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, the church said in a statement.

Canada apologizes for cold handshake during game against Czech Republic

0

play

Hockey Canada apologized Saturday after players omitted postgame handshakes following an emotional 7-5 win over the Czech Republic at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

It is customary for teams to shake hands after games at the World Juniors, but Canada skated onto the ice without shaking hands after a heated fracas in Minneapolis on Friday that included pregame antics, cheers among players and a scrum after the whistle.

“After last night’s game, the Canadian junior team skated off the ice before shaking hands with the Czech team,” Hockey Canada said in a statement. “Hockey Canada takes full responsibility for this oversight and has apologized to the team, the Czech Ice Hockey Association and the IIHF for the mistake.”

Perennial favorites Canada, who suffered heart-breaking defeats to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the past two World Junior Championships, needed four goals in the third period to secure victory in their first game of the tournament.

Team Canada captain Porter Martone scored an empty-net goal with a minute left to give his team a two-goal lead, but was then given a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for slipping through the Czech bench and tapping forward Adam Novotny on the backside.

The players and Canadian coach Dale Hunter admitted ignorance in not participating in the traditional postgame handshake.

“I didn’t mean any disrespect to anyone,” Canadian winger Tigi Iginla said. “Actually, we never thought we should shake hands, but now we do and we will shake hands after the game, regardless of the result.”

Hunter said: “But you know something, I didn’t. But now I know. So there will be a handshake (after tonight’s game against Latvia) and I’m going to say I’m sorry to the Czechs.”

US weather forecast includes snowstorm, sudden cold front, bomb cyclone

0

The last few days of 2025 are expected to bring all kinds of severe weather, including blizzard conditions, a bomb cyclone, and a “Blue Norther.” Here’s what you need to know:

play

More severe weather is expected across the United States as 2025 closes out, with forecasters warning of the possibility of snowstorms and “bomb cyclones” as the new year approaches, potentially making post-holiday travel hazardous.

A winter storm has battered parts of the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, snarling traffic as people head home after the Christmas holidays. On Dec. 27, some New Englanders woke up to 4 to 8 inches of snow. A second storm is heading toward parts of the same region within days, the National Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, a “Blue Noser,” a sudden cold snap in which temperatures plummet by more than 40 degrees in just a few minutes, spread across the south-central Plains on Dec. 28, and a low-pressure system sweeps through the Midwest.

From subzero temperatures in Montana to thunderstorms and snowstorms in the Great Lakes, here’s what we know about the upcoming severe weather.

US weather warnings

The interactive map below shows all weather warnings (warnings, watches, and advisories) currently issued by the National Weather Service. This map updates every 15 minutes.

‘Blue Norther’: Warm weather abruptly ends across central US

The Bureau of Meteorology says the Blue Norther, described by Accuweather as a “strong cold front characterized by a sudden and rapid drop in temperatures,” will move south through the south-central Plains on Dec. 28.

“Due to the speed at which the cold air moves in, temperatures in Montana will drop below freezing by Sunday morning, with northerly winds expected to bring temperatures below -30 degrees,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.

A wave of strong thunderstorms signals Blue Norther’s arrival in the South, with temperatures expected to be in the mid 70s to low 80s from Texas to the Tennessee Valley on Dec. 27.

The most famous Blue Noser occurred in 1911. On November 11, much of the Midwest saw temperatures drop by 40 to 50 degrees in minutes, breaking both the highest and lowest temperatures for the day in some places, and was accompanied by severe thunderstorms. After hitting an all-time high of 83 degrees in Oklahoma City, temperatures plummeted to a record low of 17 degrees by midnight.

A potential “bomb cyclone” is occurring.

Another winter storm is expected to move through the Midwest, Great Lakes region and Northeast on Dec. 28-29, bringing snow, ice and freezing rain, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

“The storm will likely rapidly intensify and become a ‘bomb cyclone’ over the Great Lakes from Sunday afternoon into Monday afternoon,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham. “To meet the criteria for a bomb cyclone, the central pressure of the storm must drop by at least 24 millibars over a 24-hour period.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, bomb cyclones occur when a process known as bombogenesis occurs when a cold, dry mass of air meets a warm, moist mass of air, causing rapid development.

A low-pressure system interacting with large amounts of arctic air will bring snow to the northern and central Rocky Mountains and nearby highlands late December 27 and into the 28th, the National Weather Service said. The development of a low pressure system is accelerating from the Midwest to the Great Lakes, and blizzard conditions are expected from the night of December 28th to the morning of the 29th. Blizzard and whiteout conditions are expected, with more than a foot of additional snow expected.

“An all-out blizzard is possible across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin from Sunday night into Monday as the storm passes,” Buckingham said. “The combination of wind gusts in excess of 40 mph and heavy snow could make travel conditions extremely difficult, if not temporarily impossible.”

According to AccuWeather, freezing conditions are expected in parts of Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

California floods, landslides ease as dry weather eases

In a little bit of good news, AccuWeather reported that the atmospheric river that dumped several inches of rain on parts of Southern California over the past few days is expected to weaken by Dec. 27, and the weather will become drier into early next week.

Rain caused evacuations, landslides and power outages during the Christmas holiday. The storm caused multiple deaths. Roads turned into rivers, houses and cars were buried in mud, and daily rainfall decreased significantly. Particularly vulnerable to flooding are areas with burn scars and recent wildfires that absorb less rainfall, including the sites of the Palisades and Eaton fires in January 2025.

These are some of the three-day rainfall totals, according to AccuWeather.

  • Topanga Park: 8.15 inches
  • Pepperdine: 4.77 inches
  • Downtown Los Angeles: 4.11 inches
  • Santa Monica: 3.49 inches
  • Laguna Beach: 1.62 inches
  • San Diego: 1.30 inches

Are your year-end bonuses and gifts much less than you expected? Here’s why

0

play

Americans who receive year-end bonuses for doing a good job may be bitterly disappointed when they open the envelope and discover that the big chunk is missing.

Up to one-third of your cash bonus can be swallowed up by Medicare, Social Security, and state taxes, plus the IRS’s special withholding tax on cash bonuses, or what’s called “side income.” The flat federal tax rate on bonuses is 22% for side income of less than $1 million. Add in Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and state taxes, and your total withholding is approximately 30% to 35%.

According to Homebase, a workforce management software company, “that 22% federal withholding…may be higher than your regular tax bill.” “If you normally pay 12%, 22% is gone from your bonus.”

Why could this cause economic disaster for the American people?

Kevin Knull, CEO of TaxStatus, which provides IRS data to financial advisors, said many Americans may have spent the holiday period as if they had received the entire bonus amount, rather than the bonus amount minus taxes.

For example, a $10,000 bonus for air traffic controllers who earn perfect attendance awards during a government shutdown is not actually a $10,000 bonus. Bonus withholding is a flat rate of 22%, plus 6.2% Social Security tax and 1.45% Medicare tax. These reduce the bonus to just over $7,000, plus the potential for state income taxes.

“It all gets deducted right away and goes to Uncle Sam,” Knull said. “About 48% of the population underestimates the taxes they pay. Income taxes take a huge chunk out of your paycheck.” If you used your entire “$10,000 bonus,” you would have overspent about $3,000.

Separately, experts say Americans should be aware that bonuses can push their tax rates even higher if they’re already approaching higher rates.

Do you have any (belated) good news?

Experts say if the tax on the bonus is less than 22% of the withholding rate, the difference will either be refunded or applied to taxes on other income. Bonuses are taxed as regular income on your tax return. To get this money back, you’ll have to wait until you file your 2025 taxes next year.

Conversely, if the tax on your bonus exceeds the 22% withholding rate, you will be liable to pay the difference between the amount withheld and the total tax amount.

How can I keep my taxes low with bonuses?

If you haven’t maxed out your 401(k) or IRA contributions for the year, consider adding some to your retirement savings to reduce your overall taxable income come tax season, writes Kay Bell at financial product comparison site Bankrate. Contributions are not subject to income tax, but subsequent withdrawals are taxed.

The IRA contribution limit for 2025 is $7,000, or $8,000 if you’re 50 or older. The 401(k) limit is $23,500, with an additional $7,500 if you’re 50 or older, excluding ages 60 to 63. These individuals are subject to a higher additional contribution limit of $11,250 instead of $7,500.

Alternatively, if you expect your income to be significantly lower next year and your tax rate will be lower, consider asking your employer to postpone the bonus until then, he said. You still have to pay taxes, but you save money by paying at a lower rate.

“However, even if their tax bill remains the same from year to year, some people may want to take a bonus next year just to move their tax liability to 2026,” says Richard Pong, a certified public accountant in San Francisco.

What about non-cash bonuses and gifts?

“Employers and employees may be shocked to learn that gifts are generally taxable,” Pong says.

Gifts and bonuses that are cash or cash equivalents, such as gift cards, season tickets to sports or theatrical events, and gift certificates, are taxable, Bong said.

“Employers may deduct this from your regular paycheck,” he says. “Your employer may also pay these taxes on your behalf and add up your income. If your employer pays your employee’s taxes, the value of your $25 gift card could double to $50 including taxes. You should check your pay stub to see if you owe taxes.”

Some exceptions exist. The first is a “conduit gift.” This is donated to an intermediary organization that passes the funds on to the final recipient. For example, if a parent teacher association (PTA) collects cash or gift cards to give to staff or faculty, those are pipeline gifts and are not taxable. The PTA was simply a conduit for gifts from parents.

Another exception is when managers personally give cash or gift cards to employees, Bong said. “It’s a personal gift. It’s not a gift from your employer,” he said. They are tax-free gifts to the recipients because the managers are “not the employers.”

However, he warned that these gifts could cause other friction in the workplace. “There are a lot of bad guys,” Pon said. “I once worked at an accounting firm, and the managing partner complained that I was giving gift cards and candy to the administrative staff as a token of appreciation for helping me throughout the year. The partner said it would be considered unkind if I didn’t hand out gifts to other managers.”

Bong said non-cash gifts, such as hams, turkeys and occasional tickets to sporting or theatrical events, are considered “minimum fringe benefits” and are not taxable. However, keep in mind that coupons and gift cards for the purchase of turkeys, hams, and other items may be taxable.

Harry Styles releases surprise “Forever, Forever” video. fans will lose

play

Harry Styles fans are gearing up for his long-awaited comeback in 2026 after the pop star made a brief appearance in the public eye on Saturday, December 27th.

The “As It Was” singer’s YouTube channel posted a more than eight-minute video documenting the final show of his “Love on Tour” on July 22, 2023 at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The video shows fans outside preparing for the idol’s final show on an over-tour that began in September 2021 and spanned over 170 dates.

“It’s a little sad (to see him go) because this is his last show,” one fan said in Italian.

The video then shows the British musician performing a piano ballad cover of the song “Forever, Forever”, which is also the video’s title. Fans can be seen emotionally stunned and in awe as Styles sings while wearing a sequined vest with dazzling tassels.

Styles hasn’t released any music since releasing his funky synth-pop project Harry’s House in May 2022, which won him the 2023 Grammy for Album of the Year. After winning the award, he completed a historic 15-concert performance at Madison Square Garden and pursued a career in acting, appearing in films such as “Don’t Worry Darling” and “My Policeman.”

Styles has kept a low profile following the tragic death of his friend and One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31. In a rare social media post, Styles recalled his “lovely friend” as someone who loved “making other people happy.”

However, this year he has been seen running at the Berlin Marathon in September and the Tokyo Marathon in March.

Will Harry Styles release new music in 2026? what the fans think

The “Forever, Forever” video, released on Dec. 27, didn’t directly tease any new music, but Styles’ fans, many of whom call themselves “Harries,” are already promising that 2026 will be their year.

It’s been three years since his last two albums, Fine Line and Harry’s House, and many believe it’s time to start the countdown.

USA TODAY has reached out to Styles’ representatives for comment.

Some fans are saying:

Styles has not yet promoted the new video on other social media platforms.

His latest Instagram post dates back to October 17, 2024, and his last X post was on December 11, 2022. His latest TikTok video was posted on July 24, 2024, two days after the Reggio Emilia concert.

Influenza cases are increasing across the United States. New York State sets new weekly infection record

play

Influenza cases are surging across the United States during the busy holiday travel season.

New York state is one of the hardest hit states. According to the New York State Department of Health, New York State reported its highest number of positive influenza cases in a single week (71,123) during the week ending December 20th. The ministry said this represents a 38% increase compared to the previous week.

New York was one of 14 states that reported high or very high numbers of outpatient visits to health care providers for flu-like illnesses during the week ending Dec. 13, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The District of Columbia, New York City and Puerto Rico are also reporting many or very high numbers of flu-like cases, the agency said.

As of Dec. 16, the CDC predicted that influenza cases were increasing or likely to increase in 47 states, with only Hawaii showing a decline in cases.

The increase in seasonal influenza activity across the United States is similar to the past several seasons, according to the CDC. However, at the same time, a new influenza strain called subclade K, which is a variant of influenza A (H3N2) virus that has caused influenza outbreaks in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada, has also appeared. Health officials are concerned that current flu vaccines may be incompatible with new variants, but remain confident they can protect against severe illness.

Health officials are not yet sure whether the new strain of influenza is leading to more cases or more severe cases, but “what is clear is that the number of infections is increasing, and that there are more influenza cases nationwide.” We’re seeing an increase, and this trend is certain to continue into the new year,” Andrew Pekos, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Response, said in a Dec. 16 video health briefing.

Fewer Americans are getting flu shots this season

Also, fewer Americans getting vaccinated against the flu could potentially be contributing to the rise in influenza cases. More than 47.6 million flu shots have been administered at retail pharmacies and doctor’s offices so far in the 2025-2026 season, which is about 3 million fewer than last year, according to the CDC.

The government shutdown, which lasted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, also likely meant less influenza activity data, which could have affected vaccination rates, Jennifer Nuzzo, a professor of epidemiology and director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health, said in an influenza report published Dec. 19 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“We could potentially be heading into a very nasty flu season, and we know it’s starting with less data and, more importantly, fewer vaccinations,” she said.

The flu has killed 1,900 people and three children, according to the CDC.

The CDC estimates that the flu has caused at least 4.6 million illnesses, 49,000 hospitalizations and 1,900 deaths so far this season. Two pediatric deaths were reported to the CDC for the week ending Dec. 13, bringing the total number of influenza-related pediatric deaths so far this season to three, the agency announced.

In Colorado, where the CDC said influenza-like activity was “very high,” the number of emergency department visits diagnosed with influenza increased 7% in the week ending Dec. 20, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Influenza accounts for 7% of emergency department visits in Louisiana, up from about 6% the previous week, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. All respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, accounted for nearly 9% of emergency visits, the ministry said.

In New York City, the rate of hospital emergency room visits diagnosed with the flu increased to 8.75% in the week ending Dec. 20 from 6.76% the previous week, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Influenza activity is high or very high in these states

CDC’s FluView interactive map is based on health care provider outpatient visits for influenza-like illnesses within a state or territory. These states and territories had high or very high levels.

  • Colorado (very high)
  • Connecticut (Highlands)
  • District of Columbia (High)
  • Idaho (high)
  • Massachusetts (High)
  • New Hampshire (high)
  • new jersey (high)
  • New Mexico (High)
  • New York (very expensive)
  • New York City (very expensive)
  • Puerto Rico (high)
  • Louisiana (very high)
  • Georgia (high)
  • Maryland (High)
  • Michigan (High)
  • North Carolina (High)
  • South Carolina (High)

What are your recent flu symptoms?

Symptoms associated with H3N2 are similar to those of other influenza viruses and include:

  • heat
  • cough
  • snot
  • fatigue
  • muscle pain and chills

How to protect yourself from the flu

It’s not too late to get a flu shot. The CDC, World Health Organization, and other leading medical organizations consider this the most effective way to prevent serious illness from influenza. Everyone over the age of 6 months is eligible to receive the flu vaccine unless they have certain medical conditions, such as an allergy to the ingredients in the flu vaccine or a severe reaction to a previous shot.

To prevent the spread of the flu, you should wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, the New York State Department of Health notes. Other tips to prevent the spread of the flu:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • If you are sick, please stay home.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

From Labubu’s global takeover to TikTok’s “goodbye,” 2025 has been a never-ending loop of shocking (and sometimes bizarre) news and social media trends.

It can be difficult to remember what happened yesterday, let alone at the beginning of the year. Therefore, it may be necessary to summarize.

To help you remember some of those key moments, we’ve summarized them all together. Check out some of the moments that perfectly captured the zeitgeist of 2025.

Americans say ‘goodbye’ to TikTok

Before TikTok went “black” for 12 hours in January, some U.S. users were already preparing for the worst, saying their final goodbyes or posting heartfelt tributes in case they never saw the social media platform again.

The federal law forcing TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell the app’s U.S. assets was aimed at allaying national security concerns from lawmakers who feared the Beijing-based company was sharing U.S. user data with China.

TikTok users post emotional farewells

With the app’s future uncertain, TikTok users are posting emotional farewells and heartfelt thanks to their followers.

On December 18, ByteDance announced that it had signed an agreement to transfer majority control of its U.S. operations to a group of investors. Before the deal was reached, President Donald Trump had issued five executive orders to delay the ban.

The financial terms of the deal remain unclear, with new reports from various news outlets suggesting investors could own less than 50% or as much as 80% of the joint venture, according to the New York Times, Reuters and the Los Angeles Times. But the good news is that the deal offers a glimmer of hope for users who want TikTok to exist forever.

Gulf of Mexico? More like the American Gulf, President Trump proclaimed on Inauguration Day, January 20th.

The name change went into effect on February 10, the day after the president declared February 9 the “first-ever American Bay Day” on his way to Super Bowl 59. After the Geographical Name Information System officially adopted the new name, Google and Apple moved quickly to honor President Trump’s order.

President Trump’s executive order upset many people, especially Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who threatened legal action against Google and joked that she would start referring to the United States as “Mexican America” in retaliation.

Katy Perry in space

haters gonna hate. And Katy Perry, one of six famous women sent to the edge of space, got a lot of it.

The pop singer and her crew had the chance to take a short trip beyond Earth’s atmosphere, taking in out-of-this-world views, thanks to billionaire Jeff Bezos’ private space company Blue Origin.

The internet, including fellow celebrities Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski, criticized the voyage, calling it “out of line” and even “a bit gluttonous.” Hate Train was primarily targeted at Perry and continued until the end of the mission on April 14th.

Perry did not comment on the controversy until weeks later, telling fans who celebrated the “Dark Horse” singer’s tour opening that the online world was trying to turn her into a “human piñata.”

Things got a little awkward for the couple, who attended a Coldplay concert in Foxboro, Massachusetts in July. you know it.

Two concertgoers were thrust into the spotlight after making cameo appearances on “Kiss Cam.” A man and a woman were seen hugging each other and jumping out of sight after realizing they were visible to everyone in the Gillette Stadium crowd, including frontman Chris Martin, on the jumbotron.

Immediately after the clip went viral, internet sleuths began investigating the case and trying to uncover the identities of the two men.

Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s chief human resources officer Christine Cabot resigned within days. The company then hired Martin’s ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, as a “temporary spokesperson” to be the face of its latest ad.

The scandal has become something of a spectacle, spawning repeat performances and prompting music artists to issue warnings before performances. Although the two made no public statements after the scandal broke, Ms. Cabot revealed her position to the New York Times on December 18th.

Lovebu’s global takeover

Labbus is the fashion accessory of 2025.

The toy, part of “The Monsters” line, was the star of this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The stuffed monster, designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung 10 years ago, has been so popular this year that it has spawned copycats.

However, the boom appears to have started a few months after K-pop girl group BLACKPINK’s Lisa mentioned her “secret obsession” with Pop Mart collectibles in a December 2024 Vanity Fair interview.

Since then, the Love Bath has become a popular product, with consumers all over the world vying to get their hands on the original. Those who were lucky enough to get their hands on one may be planning on purchasing their next one, or may be buying costumes for the one they already own.

Jeans or genes? Advertisement starring Sidney Sweeney explodes

Sidney Sweeney’s American Eagle divides the Internet: Tone-deaf or anti-woke?

American Eagle’s fall campaign featuring Sidney Sweeney is under fire over its controversial play on the word “gene.”

straight arrow news

American Eagle tried to promote its jeans through a campaign featuring Sidney Sweeney, but the campaign instead became the subject of controversy online.

Critics quickly condemned the ad, claiming the wordplay was a clever attempt to support eugenics. Many argued that the ad promoted the belief that some genetic traits are better than others by glorifying the actor’s white genetic traits as “superior.”

Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz and White House communications director Stephen Chan rushed to the ad’s defense, saying the backlash was coming from the “crazy left.”

Months after the uproar, Sweeney told GQ that the reaction to the commercial was “surprising” and that it was “unrealistic” for the president and vice president to comment on her ad.

Logo Lessons: Cracker Barrel

On August 19, Cracker Barrel unveiled a new, simplified logo to kick off its fall menu campaign, but it didn’t get the reaction it had hoped for. The new logo still featured the company’s classic gold and brown color palette, but no longer depicted a man sitting next to a wooden barrel.

In the days following its launch, the national restaurant chain and rural locations faced a wave of backlash, with some conservatives hinting that the change was motivated by a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Hours after Donald Trump said on Aug. 26 that the company should go back to its old logo, Cracker Barrel announced it would retire its new logo and “keep ‘Oldtimer.'”

Pleased by the reversal, President Trump shared a video compilation of himself breaking the deal with the chain’s popular mascot, an “old guy in overalls,” leaning on a barrel to the tune of “YMCA.” Cracker Barrel is working to rebuild brand and customer trust after its logo debacle.

Philadelphia Phillies fans were eager to catch Harrison Bader’s home run ball, which flew into the stands in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After a scramble in the stands, a man won the ball and gave it to his 10-year-old son. But that special moment between father and son soon changed.

Cameras captured the moment another nearby spectator, a woman known online as “Philly’s Karen,” confronted the man in what appeared to be a tense exchange. In the end, the man who retrieved the ball first gave it to the woman.

Outrage intensified after footage of the exchange spread online, with the man, later identified as Drew Feltwell, calling on the public to leave the woman alone.

This year’s word is… “6-7”

play

What is the viral meme trend “6-7”? Explanation

Dictionary.com has announced “6-7” as the word of the year. The Internet slang trend has exploded among Generation Alpha, but it’s causing frustration among parents and teachers.

We’ve all heard the phrase “6-7.” First children, then educators, and now “6-7” has entered the mainstream vocabulary.

Voted Word of the Year by Dictionary.com, “6-7” (also “6-7” or “67”) is slang popularized by Gen Alpha. The meaning of “6-7” is context dependent, so it can technically mean anything you want at that moment. Some people interpret this phrase to mean “so-so” or “maybe this, maybe that,” but it is also used as an exclamation.

Between paperclips and the food trade, I’d like to say that the world was totally unprepared for how the lexicon has tilted in favor of “6-7” over the past few months.

Severe weather gripped parts of the United States on Christmas Day, causing delays and cancellations for hundreds of holidaymakers trying to return home.

The Upper Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic experienced a white Christmas with a mix of snow, freezing rain, and sleet. The second system is expected to bring even colder winter weather and several inches of snow into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, in Southern California, historic rainfall from atmospheric rivers flooded roads, caused massive power outages and caused mudslides. Cities like Los Angeles, Burbank, and Santa Barbara experienced record rainfall during the holiday itself.

As of 1:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 26, more than 4,000 U.S. flights had been delayed and more than 1,300 had been canceled, according to aviation tracking site FlightAware. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport are the most affected, accounting for 22%, 17%, and 18% of canceled outbound flights, respectively.

Here’s what you need to know if your flight is affected.

Amount payable if flight is canceled or delayed

Travelers whose flights are canceled for any reason are entitled to a full refund if they decide not to fly or are denied compensation such as credits or vouchers, the Department of Transport said. If you wish to proceed with your trip, you have the right to rebook without penalty.

Weather is considered outside the airline’s control, so if a flight is canceled or delayed, travelers are not entitled to any additional fees, such as a hotel stay.

Travelers can also check DOT’s consumer dashboard to see what airlines are committed to providing in the event of delays or cancellations.

Does the airline offer exemptions?

Several airlines are offering relief to travelers affected by the winter storm from rebooking or canceling flights without a fee. Travelers can visit the airline’s website for more information.

Russia attacks Kiev with missiles and drones ahead of Trump-Zelensky meeting

Ukraine’s foreign minister said temperatures hovered around freezing on Saturday morning, and airstrikes left a third of Kiev without heating.

play

Russia attacked Ukraine with hundreds of missiles and drones on Saturday, ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy who said he would hold key talks with US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday to hammer out a deal to end the nearly four-year war.

President Zelenskyy said Russia’s response to ongoing peace efforts brokered by Washington was a massive night attack on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine that involved around 500 drones and 40 missiles and cut off power and heat in parts of the capital.

Ahead of the attack, the Ukrainian leader spoke of talks with President Trump that are expected to focus on territory controlled by both sides after the fighting ends in Europe’s worst conflict since World War II, which began in 2022 with Russia’s invasion of its smaller neighbor.

The attack continued throughout the morning, and the nearly 10-hour air raid warning for the capital ended at 11:20 local time (0920 GMT). Authorities said one person was killed in the attack in the Kyiv region and at least 19 people were injured, including two children, in the capital itself.

“If Russia turns even the Christmas and New Year period into a period of destroyed houses, burnt-out apartments and abandoned power plants, this sick activity can only be responded to with truly strong measures,” Zelenskiy wrote on X, calling on the US and Europe to put more pressure on Russia.

He said rescue teams were continuing to search for people trapped under rubble in one of the damaged homes.

Russia had no immediate comment on the attack.

Thousands of homes without heat in winter

Explosions echoed across Kiev before dawn on Saturday as Ukrainian air defense forces sprang into action. The Air Force said Russian drones were targeting the capital and areas in the northeast and south.

Officials said various parts of Kiev’s seven different districts were affected, and at least three high-rise apartment buildings were set on fire.

State power grid operator Ukrenergo said energy facilities across Ukraine, including in Kiev and surrounding areas, had come under Russian attack and emergency power outages had been implemented across the capital.

Ukraine’s foreign minister said airstrikes left a third of Kiev without heating as temperatures hovered around 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) Saturday morning.

The Kiev regional authorities, which surrounds but does not include the city, said 320,000 homes were without power after the attack.

The Polish Air Navigation Authority also posted on X that the airstrike caused the temporary closure of Rzeszow and Lublin airports in southeastern Poland, west of Ukraine, after the Polish military scrambled fighter jets.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia launched attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Thursday night and stepped up attacks on the southern region of Odessa, where Ukraine’s main port is located.

President Trump and Zelensky discuss possibilities for U.S. security

President Zelensky told reporters in Kiev on Friday that the draft 20-point document that will form the basis of the US push for a peace deal is 90% complete, but the territorial issue remains a major diplomatic hurdle.

He said that the security agreement between Ukraine and the United States is almost ready. This was an important element after the initial post-Soviet guarantees proved meaningless.

President Zelenskiy posted on social media that “many things may be decided before the new year.”

President Trump said the United States is the driving force behind this process.

“He doesn’t have anything until I approve it,” Trump told Politico. “So let’s see what he has.”

Ahead of the talks, Zelenskiy will hold a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders on Saturday, a European Commission spokesperson said.

President Zelensky told Axios that the United States had offered a 15-year agreement on security guarantees subject to renewal, but Kiev wanted a longer-term agreement with legally binding provisions to prevent further Russian aggression.

President Trump said he believed Sunday’s meeting would go well. He also said he intended to meet with Putin “soon and as often as I wish.”

Disputed territories, nuclear power plants, and economic zones

An important point in addition to territory is control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, which was captured by Russia in the first weeks of the war.

The Russian government is demanding that the Russian military withdraw to Ukraine from the eastern region of Donetsk, which it was unable to capture, with the aim of securing the entire Donbas region (including the Luhansk region).

But Kiev wants fighting to stop on the current front.

Under the US compromise, a free economic zone would be established once Ukrainian troops withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region, but details have not yet been worked out.

Axios reported that President Zelenskiy said that if he is unable to get the United States to support Ukraine’s position on the land issue, he is willing to put the 20-point plan to a referendum as long as Russia agrees to a 60-day cease-fire that would allow Ukraine to prepare and hold a vote.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Kiev’s 20-point plan was different from what Russia had been discussing with the United States, according to Interfax.

But he expressed optimism that the situation had reached a “tipping point” towards reconciliation.

President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov met with members of the Trump administration after the Kremlin received a U.S. proposal about a potential peace deal, the Kremlin announced Friday. It has not been disclosed how the Russian government viewed the documents.

Is Bitcoin positioned to outperform the market in 2026?

0

Bitcoin is on track to end in 2025 with losses for investors.

According to the asset management company’s materials black rock, Bitcoin (Cryptocurrency: BTC) It generated higher returns compared to all other asset classes in eight of the 11 years from the beginning of 2013 to 2023. Bitcoin then rose 119% in 2024.

This positive momentum is coming to an end this year, with the top digital asset set to fall 7% in 2025 (as of Dec. 23). at the same time, S&P500 The index has generated a total return of approximately 18%, marking the third consecutive year of double-digit gains.

Perhaps next year will be a better year for Bitcoin. Will the world’s dominant cryptocurrencies be positioned to recover and outperform the market in 2026?

Macro environment may favor Bitcoin in the short term

In September 2024, federal reserve system The central bank has decided to lower the base interest rate for the first time since the rate hike in July 2023. Since then, the central bank has cut interest rates five more times. Generally speaking, lower interest rates are a boon for risky assets, including Bitcoin. From an investor’s perspective, the low yields of fixed income products are less attractive and there is an increased focus on assets that can earn higher returns. These rate cuts are also accommodative to the economy, which could encourage revenue and profit growth for companies and, in turn, support higher valuations and stock prices.

Moreover, the U.S. central bank effectively quantitative easing (QE) announced plans to purchase $40 billion in Treasury bills each month. Quantitative easing was last launched on March 15, 2020, with the aim of stimulating the economy after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the next 12 months, Bitcoin soared more than 1,000%.

Lower interest rates and quantitative easing provide a very favorable environment in which more people can access more money. liquidity It is fed into the financial system. Bitcoin, a global macro asset, will definitely be affected by this. To monitor this trend, investors can look to two important indicators: federal debt and M2 money supply. Both have expanded rapidly in recent years, and there’s no reason to think they shouldn’t do the same in 2026.

As we set our sights on the new year, macroeconomic conditions appear to be working in Bitcoin’s favor.

Bitcoin’s performance in 2026 could overwhelm the market

Based on historical averages, the S&P 500 Annualized total return 10%. If this happens in 2026, Bitcoin will have a very low hurdle to clear if it is to outperform its benchmark index. In addition to the macro forces already mentioned, there are two reasons why major cryptocurrencies are poised to perform very well next year.

This year, Bitcoin is on pace to decline for the fourth time in the past 12 years. In the year following a loss, prices usually recover in surprising ways. For example, after falling 65% in 2022, digital assets rebounded with an impressive 156% gain in 2023. Past trends are not an indication of what will happen in the future. However, this track record shows that Bitcoin cannot continue to fall for long and 2026 could be a big year.

There were many fear, anxiety, doubt (FUD) About recent times quantum computing and the potential negative impact it could have on the Bitcoin blockchain. In theory, quantum computing could break Bitcoin’s security, allowing a malicious attacker to access private keys from a user’s public key, effectively taking ownership of the cryptocurrency. This erodes the trust people have in Bitcoin and could render the network worthless.

However, these concerns may be overblown. Experts argue that current quantum computers are too expensive, have high error rates and are not powerful enough. Additionally, Bitcoin developers are working on developing quantum-resistant tools. This may still pose a long-term threat, but it has become a focus for key stakeholders.

Bitcoin could benefit from improving market sentiment throughout 2026 if the FUD buzz of the day starts to fade.

Florida man kills wife, shoots stepdaughter during argument at NFL game

Police say Jason Kenney was drinking and watching football when he became so angry with his wife that he killed her and shot and killed their 13-year-old daughter. Letters they found indicated he was also using cocaine.

A Florida man killed his wife and shot his stepdaughter in the face after an argument over watching a football game, authorities said.

Jason Kenney, 47, was drinking and watching Monday Night Football at his cabin in Highland City, just east of Tampa, until about 11 p.m. on Dec. 22, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference the next day. Judd said Kenney then went into his home and wanted to continue watching the game in the living room with his wife, Crystal.

An argument ensued because Crystal Kenney didn’t want to watch football. Judd said the fight escalated and Crystal told her 12-year-old son to run to a neighbor’s house and call 911.

The first gunshots were heard as the boy ran out of the house. Responding deputies found Crystal dead inside, her 13-year-old daughter shot in the face and shoulder, and Jason Kenney missing. Judd said the infant daughter the couple shared was uninjured, and their 13-year-old daughter survived the gunshot wound, although the bullet hit the bridge of her nose and missed the top of her head.

“The 13-year-old girl begged not to be shot. ‘Please don’t shoot me. Please don’t shoot me,'” Judd said. “And he shot her twice.”

After shooting his wife and stepdaughter, Kenney drove to his late father’s home in Lake Wales in his truck, called his sister and told her he had “done something very, very bad,” that it would be in the news and that it would be the last time they spoke, Judd said.

Kenny ends up in a cabin on his father’s old property. Deputies pursued him and as they called for him to come out, they heard a single gunshot. They found Kenny dead inside.

Judd said the sheriff’s office has no record of any domestic violence reports or charges, but a relative told the sheriff that Kenney had been hitting Krystal “for some time.” Judd said Jason Kenney had no criminal history.

Officers found a letter written to Crystal’s husband in the room where her body was found. In it, she wrote, “You are drinking and using cocaine. This is not how a family should be. You need God.”

Judd said the tragedy hit close to home for lawmakers, especially since it occurred three days before Christmas.

“He completely destroyed his family,” Judd said. “Our homicide detective is distraught. He walks in there and sees a beautiful Christmas tree and a bunch of Christmas presents under the tree. Exactly what a nuclear family should be…and it ends up like this.”

The sheriff encouraged anyone in crisis to call 911 for help. The National Crisis Hotline number is 988.

“How can an argument over a TV show end in murder, attempted murder, and suicide?” he said. “That shouldn’t happen. Get help… Don’t hurt yourself, don’t hurt the people you love.”

Crystal Kenney’s 12-year-old son and her baby daughter, Jason Kenney, are currently in the care of their grandparents as the Florida Department of Children and Families determines long-term placement, Judd said.

Tyler Perry faces new sexual assault lawsuit from actor

0

play

Tyler Perry is facing new sexual assault allegations after the movie mogul is accused of making unwanted sexual advances in a lawsuit filed on Christmas Day in California.

The lawsuit was filed on Dec. 25 on behalf of Mario Rodriguez, and alleges the filmmaker assaulted him and promised to star in the film. Rodriguez, a model who had a bit role in Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” is seeking $77 million in damages.

Rodriguez’s attorney is Jonathan J. Delshad, the same attorney who represented another actor, Derek Dixon, who accused Perry of sexual misconduct earlier this year.

“Mr. Rodriguez looks forward to the day he will hold Mr. Perry accountable for his actions in court. He hopes a jury will award him enough money to make Mr. Perry regret his actions,” Delshad said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Unfortunately, statements like those made by Mr. Perry’s attorneys only enable Mr. Perry to continue victimizing people like Mr. Rodriguez. My client looks forward to a jury determining what happened.”

In a statement to USA TODAY, Mr. Perry’s attorney, Alex Spiro, wrote, “Although we recently failed in another matter against Mr. Perry, the very same attorney has been making another demand for more than a decade that will also fail in his attempt to extort money.” (Mr. Dixon’s lawsuit was originally filed in California state court, but was moved to Georgia federal court.)

In her lawsuit, Rodriguez alleges that in 2015, at a gym in Los Angeles, her trainer asked her to meet Perry. After a phone conversation, Perry offered Rodriguez the role of “Frat Guy No. 10” on “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” according to the complaint. Additionally, Perry claims that over the next few years, he invited Rodriguez to dinner and his home to discuss future projects, only to have him make unwanted advances while intoxicated.

“Perry uses his power to abuse and sexually assault those who wish to appear in his films,” Rodriguez’s attorney wrote. “Perry’s ‘type’ is people who have been victims of childhood trauma in the past.”

Rodriguez claims she resisted Perry’s physical advances, but the lawsuit alleges the filmmaker told her, “If you give in to me, I’ll take care of you… You won’t have to worry about anything anymore.”

The actor claims Perry grabbed his genitals in November 2018 and struggled to break free. Rodriguez claimed the filmmaker later apologized and offered her $5,000.

Rodriguez’s lawsuit comes six months after Dixon filed a claim against the Hollywood giant. The lawsuit, filed June 13, alleges that Perry, who starred in Perry’s “The Oval”, committed quid pro quo sexual harassment, workplace harassment, sexual assault and battery, retaliation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Mr Dixon is seeking $260 million for his alleged targeting of Mr Perry, who said he was seeking a “coercive and sexually exploitative power relationship with Mr Dixon”.

Perry’s attorney denied the allegations in a statement shared with USA TODAY at the time.

“This is someone who approached Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than an attempt to defraud him,” attorney Matthew Boyd said. “But Mr. Tyler will not be swayed, and we are confident that the fabricated claims of harassment will fail.”

Donald Trump asks Justice Department to ‘shame’ Democrats over Epstein file

President Trump said in a social media post on December 26th, “It was the Democratic Party that collaborated with Mr. Epstein.” “Publish all their names and shame them.”

play

President Donald Trump has called on the Justice Department to release the names of Democrats included in the Epstein case file, saying the department should be “ashamed of them” while questioning the amount of time spent on the matter.

President Trump signed a bill on November 19 that requires the release of federal records related to Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges in 2019.

The bill provides a 30-day deadline for records to be released, and the Justice Department began releasing them on December 19th. Hundreds of thousands of documents have been released, but many more have yet to be released, leading some lawmakers to accuse the Trump administration of violating the law.

The Justice Department said on December 24 that the FBI and federal prosecutors had discovered more than 1 million more Epstein-related documents and that their review would take weeks.

President Trump said in a Dec. 26 social media post that “1 million more pages about Epstein have been discovered.” “The Department of Justice is being forced to spend all its time on this Democrat-inspired disinformation. When will they say no more?”

At the same time, President Trump took aim at Democrats and encouraged the Justice Department to take out those associated with Epstein.

In a Dec. 26 social media post, President Trump said, “Democrats, not Republicans, collaborated with Mr. Epstein.” “Publish all their names and shame them.”

Epstein, a wealthy and well-connected man, had interactions with the rich and famous and had a long friendship with Trump before they fell out.

Some of the newly released documents mention Mr. Trump, including Mr. Epstein’s plane travel. Other photos include former Democratic President Bill Clinton and other celebrities. Many of the documents have been heavily redacted.

Neither Trump nor Clinton have been accused of wrongdoing by authorities.

If the American economy has a successful holiday season, as the data suggests, the wealthy will be grateful.

America’s economic growth is increasingly dependent on highly paid people. They accounted for 49.2% of spending in Q2 2025. By comparison, it accounted for about 46% of spending for the same period in 2023 and about 43% of spending for top earners in 2020.

“They’re in the best financial position they’ve ever been in,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s.

Consumer spending among less affluent Americans has remained relatively flat. Middle income earners, people in their 40sth up to 60th By income percentile, approximately $2.1 trillion was spent in the second quarter of 2025, which is barely more than what was spent in each month of 2023 and 2024.

Consumer confidence is at its lowest drop since June 2022, at the peak of the COVID-19 inflation crisis, according to survey data from the University of Michigan.

The economic disparity that separates high-income Americans from everyone else has led to talk of a K-shaped economy, with one trend line pointing upwards and the other downwards.

Low- and moderate-income Americans face a cash crunch

Rising stock and home prices have allowed high-income earners to escape the cash crunch that afflicts less wealthy people.

Consumer prices have risen about 25% since 2020, according to federal data. Most wealthy Americans can easily cover that spread with stock income, high incomes, and relatively deep savings.

“Their wealth is increasing,” said Taylor Jo Eisenberg, executive director of the Economic Security Project, a nonprofit advocacy group for low-income families. “So they are spending while millions of Americans in very different situations are navigating an affordability crisis.”

Unsurprisingly, retailers and analysts are counting on high earners to drive sales during the upcoming holiday season.

“Upper-income shoppers account for a disproportionate share of the holiday shopping season and are likely to account for the majority of this year’s growth from the 2024 shopping season,” Jennifer Timmerman, senior investment strategy analyst at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said in a Nov. 24 analysis of Black Friday.

Low- and moderate-income shoppers will seek discounts and rely on buy-now-pay-later financing to get through the holiday season, Timmerman said.

High income earners owe their wealth growth to stocks.

Economists point to stocks and housing as two key factors in the rise in wealth for high-income Americans.

“The AI boom has driven up the stock prices of AI companies, and these companies are owned by households in the top 10% of the income and wealth distribution,” Zandi said. According to the U.S. Census, the top 10% of households earned more than $251,000 in 2024.

The S&P 500 is up 261% over the past decade, according to an August report from The Motley Fool.

This rise primarily benefited the wealthy. The top 1% of Americans own half of all stocks, according to federal data.

“Their sense of the economic situation is based on the stock market,” said Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “And when people generally feel better, they’re more likely to spend a little more money.”

The typical shareholder in the top 10% of income earners held $1.1 million in stock in the third quarter of 2025, up from $624,000 at the end of 2022, according to research from the University of Michigan.

According to the survey, 63% of high-income stockholders expect the market to rise over the next year.

Rising house prices boosted high-income earners

Another major factor driving the prosperity of high-income groups is real estate. And the average home sale price rose 41% from the second quarter of 2020 to the same period in 2022, to $525,100, according to federal data.

According to the 2022 Federal Consumer Finance Survey, 90% of high-income Americans own a home, compared to an overall homeownership rate of about 66%.

Many high-income homeowners benefit from lower borrowing costs. Interest rates on 30-year mortgages hovered around 3% at the peak of the pandemic. Millions of homeowners refinanced at historically low interest rates.

“If they had a mortgage, they got it paid off when interest rates were low,” Zandi said. Currently, “they earn more income from their money market accounts than they pay in interest on their mortgages.”

What happens if high-income earners stop spending?

Thanks to skyrocketing stock prices and soaring home prices, high-income Americans drove consumer spending in the 2020s. Overall spending rose from $14.5 trillion in August 2020 to $21.1 trillion in August 2025, according to federal data.

But if wealthy Americans stop spending, the economy could suffer.

High earners must continue to be employed to maintain their positions. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.4% in September, the highest since 2021.

“If the labor market starts to collapse, it will hurt confidence up and down the income distribution,” Sweet said.

Wealthy Americans are also particularly sensitive to stocks, which are notoriously volatile assets.

“If stock prices fall significantly and remain that way, that will weigh on spending,” Zandi said. “This group is moving the economic train with their spending. If they pull out, they will take the economy with them.”

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner share holiday love and food on Instagram

Christmas isn’t “training season” for Dua Lipa. It’s cooking season.

The singer-songwriter shared a series of holiday photos on Instagram, including a candid shot of her cuddling with her fiancé, actor Callum Turner, who is also British. “Happy Holidays everyone!! Sending you so much love!!!!!,” Ripa wrote in the caption.

On her Instagram carousel, Turner can be seen playfully making the singer a smoothie and playing with friends and dogs during a holiday party filled with games, scratch-off lottery tickets and pickled vegetables. “It’s all about love,” Ripa wrote, adding that the “cooking was a complete failure.” The musician was seen posing with a turkey that was first uncooked and then edible. (Since she went on tour and hadn’t been in the kitchen for six months, “all the stars aligned with me.”)

Ripa and Turner, who stars in the recent romance film Eternity with Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen, began dating last year and confirmed their engagement in June. Ripa shared a photo of the couple celebrating her 30th birthday in an Instagram post in August.

In an interview with The Sunday Times in October, Turner, 35, revealed that at a mutual friend’s pre-birthday party in Los Angeles, the two sat next to each other and realized they were reading the same book, Hernan Díaz’s novel Trust.

“I had just finished the first chapter. I told her that, and she looked at me and said, ‘I just finished the first chapter, too,'” Turner recalled. “I said, ‘So, we’re on the same page.’

Ripa gushes about her new fiancé in an interview with Vogue in June, revealing that Turner consulted her friends and sister to create her engagement ring. “I’m obsessed with it. It’s just who I am. It’s nice to know that the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with knows you so well.”
