Judge limits ICE agents from retaliating against Minnesota protesters

play

A federal judge has barred immigration officials from using tactics such as pepper spray and arrests against peaceful protesters in Minneapolis.

In a preliminary injunction issued on January 16, U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez in Minnesota granted some respite to local demonstrators protesting the Trump administration’s deployment of thousands of federal immigration agents to the Twin Cities.

The 83-page ruling by Menendez, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, said it would prevent “officials from retaliating against persons engaged in peaceful, undisturbed protests,” including oversight of the federal government’s Operation Metro Surge operations.

The ruling came less than 10 days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during a protest in Minneapolis on January 7. Her death sparked demonstrations in several American cities.

The ACLU of Minnesota, which represents the six protesters who filed the lawsuit, said in a social media post that it hopes the injunction will prevent further First Amendment violations. The lawsuit was filed by six protesters on Dec. 17, about two weeks after the federal operation began (three weeks before Goode was shot). Federal agents also shot and killed a second person on Jan. 14 during what authorities described as a targeted traffic stop.

The Department of Homeland Security, the White House and the Department of Justice did not respond to requests for comment. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement to Politico that the First Amendment protects speech and peaceful assembly, not rioting.

“DHS is taking appropriate and constitutional steps to uphold the rule of law and protect our officers and the public from dangerous mobs,” McLaughlin said. “We remind the public that rioting is dangerous. Obstructing law enforcement is a federal crime and assaulting law enforcement is a felony.”

Menendez’s order limits operatives from arresting or detaining peaceful protesters, while also restricting the use of crowd-dispersal tactics such as pepper spray and other non-lethal methods against protected demonstrations. Agents also cannot stop or detain a driver or passenger in a vehicle if there is “no articulating reasonable suspicion” that the agent is forcibly interfering with or interfering with the agent, such as when the driver or passenger is following the agent at a “reasonable distance.”

ICE agents shot and killed Good, a mother of three, as she was driving her car as part of a neighborhood patrol by local activists who track and monitor ICE activity. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, a federal official named in the lawsuit, said Good stalked and harassed employees and also said Good had “weaponized” his car and engaged in “domestic terrorism.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, both Democrats, disputed the federal government’s account, saying Good posed no threat to investigators. They argued that the use of deadly force was not justified and cited video that shows Good trying to turn away from officers.

Local authorities have repeatedly asked immigration officials to leave the state. The Justice Department has reportedly opened an investigation into Frey and Walz for conspiracy to obstruct federal immigration enforcement in the state.

Menendez’s opinion acknowledged that the federal operation has expanded dramatically, with an estimated 3,000 police officers in Minnesota, mostly in the Twin Cities. DHS previously said it was the largest such operation in history.

“This operation shows no signs of slowing down and, in fact, appears to be still escalating,” Menendez wrote.

Still, Menendez limited the order to agents covering a portion of the surge in operations in the Twin Cities, as opposed to agents across Minnesota. Menendez wrote that the order remains in effect until the federal operation ends or the conditions that make the order unnecessary end.

Snow affects the Midwest, Northeast and even the South

0

play

Snow squalls, strong winds and frigid temperatures could create dangerous travel conditions for parts of the central and eastern United States on Jan. 17, while Americans as far as Alabama and Florida could see at least a small amount of snow this weekend, forecasters said.

Behind an arctic cold front moving through the Midwest, there is a risk of snow squalls — sudden whiteout conditions and plummeting temperatures that can cause icy roads and reduced visibility — and could bring highs in the 10s to below 0 degrees in parts of the Plains and Midwest on January 17, the National Weather Service said.

“Driving in a snow squall can be dangerous as conditions can change rapidly. If you encounter a snow squall while driving and cannot safely exit the roadway, slow down, turn on your lights and hazards, and avoid slamming on the brakes,” the weather bureau said.

More than 15 million people are under winter weather advisories across the country, including parts of central and northeastern Georgia and southern Georgia. On January 17, much of Florida was also placed under a freeze watch.

According to the local weather bureau, snow is expected to fall in southern Georgia starting the night of January 17th, and there is also a chance of a little to an inch of snow in southeastern Alabama overnight and into the morning of January 18th. According to AccuWeather, the snow is expected to spread through the Carolinas and into Virginia, then move up along the East Coast.

Some areas will only see a little snow, while others will see more, but even small amounts can be dangerous in states where drivers are not used to snow and there isn’t enough infrastructure in place to clear it from roads.

How much snow will it snow?

According to AccuWeather, a few inches of light snow is expected to fall across much of the Midwest and Northeast this weekend. Three to six inches of snow is possible along the northern tier, and more than a foot of lake-effect snow is possible in the lee of the Great Lakes and higher elevation areas, the newspaper reported.

A chance of snow is expected throughout the weekend across parts of Alabama and Georgia, the eastern Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the mid-Atlantic coast and southeastern New England, with general accumulations of 1 inch, with local maximums of 3 inches possible, AccuWeather said.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, said parts of southwestern Georgia and southeastern Alabama could see up to an inch of snow. The rain will change to wintry rain or snow overnight. The weather bureau said the accumulation would be short-lived, with snow expected to last until three hours in the morning, and temperatures rising into the 40s on January 18.

“The area with the highest potential for snow extends from Georgia through the central and eastern Carolinas to southeastern Virginia,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydinowski.

See snowfall totals

Does it snow in Florida?

Parts of the Florida Panhandle could see snow starting the night of Jan. 17, Pidinowski said.

However, temperatures may be too high for much material to accumulate on the ground.

“Scattered light accumulations of less than an inch are expected and will be limited to grassy surfaces,” the weather service in Tallahassee said.

New WSJ poll shows voters are increasingly dissatisfied with President Trump on the economy.

The number of voters rating the economy as weak fell by 15 points, a worsening from July, when negative views prevailed by 4 points.

play

WASHINGTON – Voters are increasingly dissatisfied with President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, according to a new Wall Street Journal poll, a change that could have implications for the upcoming midterm elections.

In a poll released on the night of January 16, the magazine said that the number of voters who rate the economy as weak rather than strong has increased by 15 points, “a four-point worsening from July, when negative views prevailed.”

The report found that about half of voters said the economy had worsened over the past year, while 35% thought it would improve.

“These are among the red flags for the president and the Republican Party,” the paper said, noting that the poll found that voters believe Trump is focusing on foreign affairs and other issues “at the expense of his most pressing concerns: rising prices and the broader economy.”

But support for Mr. Trump among his most loyal supporters remains stable, with 92% of those who voted for him in 2024 now having a positive assessment of his employment, including 70% who say they “strongly approve,” the Journal poll found.

Still, polls show Trump and the Republican Party are more politically vulnerable heading into midterm elections for the House and Senate later this year. According to the survey, 45% of voters approve of the president’s performance, while 54% disapprove. According to the magazine, the difference is 9 points, compared to 6 points in the previous survey in July.

Is an autistic Barbie doll innovative or harmful? The community reacts.

Mattel’s new autistic Barbie doll is drawing mixed emotions from people within the autism community. why?

play

Mattel’s new autistic Barbie doll has been widely praised online for being a great example of the community. But not everyone is sold on the new dolls, including some autistic people and their families.

USA TODAY exclusively revealed on January 11 that Barbie will be releasing its first autism doll to show how people with autism experience the world around them.

The doll’s accessories include items used by some people with autism, such as noise-cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner, and a tablet with an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app to help people communicate. Mattel said there are also intentional design choices, such as flexible joints for stimulation, which refers to repetitive body movements to process sensory information.

Mattel said the doll, which is currently available at Mattel Shops and Target, had been in development for more than 18 months in partnership with the Autism Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN), a nonprofit disability rights organization.

While some support Mattel’s efforts, others argue that no single doll can adequately represent a condition with a wide range of needs.

“I love the message it sends to children.”

Although autism is not a physically visible condition, Barbie’s new autism dolls include certain items and types of clothing that some autistic people may use.

“We wanted to allow autistic children to express different sides of themselves. Not all autistic people do that, but many do. We also wanted non-autistic people to be able to see that and learn in a fun and creative way,” Colin Killick, executive director of the Autism Self-Advocacy Network, told USA TODAY.

Emily Katie, an autistic author and content creator, said she became emotional when she learned about the autistic Barbie doll.

“I love the message this movie sends to kids,” Katie told USA TODAY. “It’s like telling autistic children who may see themselves in a Barbie doll that they are not alone, that they matter, and that there is nothing wrong with who they are.”

On social media, many others said they shared Katie’s feelings.

Chloe Hayden, an autistic content creator with more than 1 million followers on TikTok, cried while talking about her new doll.

“Once you see these really cool, beautiful dolls using these devices, I think a lot of kids will want to be able to use them themselves,” Hayden said in the video, adding, “I hope everyone realizes how truly important these dolls are.”

play

What is autism and what we still don’t know

Autism remains a complex and evolving condition, from early diagnosis to lifelong questions.

The TikTok account @LewisEmpire6, which has about 900,000 followers and is run by a family with an autistic daughter, shared a video of them unwrapping an autistic Barbie doll from Mattel, which has been viewed more than 9 million times as of January 16.

“Do you know what this is? The first Barbie doll to represent autism,” mother Ashley Lewis tells her son in the video, as his eyes light up with excitement for his little sister.

“Words can’t really describe how we felt when we opened this,” Lewis wrote in the comments of the video.

Critics say autism is invisible

However, while they understood the importance of representation, some said they had a problem with trying to portray autism in a physical way.

In addition to the autistic Barbie doll accessories, the doll is designed with a slightly shifted gaze to the side, which is “intended to reflect the avoidance of direct eye contact by some members of the autism community,” Mattel said in a release.

Australian psychological researcher and autistic mother Christine Sommer said in an Instagram post that the doll “makes autism visible.”

“Headphones, AAC devices, certain clothing, certain body language, yes they create expression, but expression does two things at the same time: It can affirm some people and define boundaries for others. This is where we need to be careful,” Sommer said in a reel that had been viewed more than 200,000 times as of Jan. 16.

In a post on X that has been viewed more than 7 million times as of Jan. 16, author and psychologist Jessica Taylor called Barbie an “aesthetic label.”

“This is what we call ‘autism’ with the sharp edges removed. An autism that doesn’t disrupt anything to anyone. An autism that doesn’t challenge institutions and social norms. An autism that doesn’t offend anyone,” Taylor wrote.

Clinical psychologist Emma Bagnall said in an Instagram post that Barbie dolls are harmful.

“Autism has no appearance. Neurodivergence is not a visual category,” Bagnall wrote, later adding, “While I’m happy for the girls who feel seen, I can’t help but think of the girls who don’t feel represented in this Barbie doll.”

How should it be expressed?

Although opinions vary, the widespread reaction to the new Autistic Barbie has sparked a debate about how to truly represent autism.

James Hunt, father of two autistic sons and creator of the social media page Stories About Autism, wrote on Facebook that while concerns about stereotypes are valid, he still feels the new Barbie doll is a “huge step forward.”

“This is not to say that all autistic people are like this. That’s not possible. This is a matter of representation and starting a dialogue far beyond the autism community,” Hunt wrote.

The autism spectrum spans a wide range. This means that autism may have a significant impact on one person’s life, but may have little impact on another person’s life.

For example, some people have intellectual disabilities or co-occurring illnesses, but others need far less support, Dr. Carol Weitzman, a pediatrician and co-director of the Autism Spectrum Center at Boston Children’s Hospital, told USA TODAY.

“There are few other disorders, at least to my understanding, that are as widespread as autism, so trying to recreate this in a doll is very difficult,” Weitzman said.

James McPartland, director of the Yale Developmental Disorders Clinic and the Yale Center for Brain and Mental Health, emphasized the broad diagnostic implications of the autism spectrum.

Watch Ilona Maher’s new Barbie doll make history

Rugby star Ilona Maher has teamed up with Mattel to bring to life a new Barbie doll featuring a muscular physique similar to Martel’s.

“If the autism diagnosis itself doesn’t say the same thing about everyone, how on earth could a plastic doll manage to capture all of that diversity?” McPartland told USA TODAY. “And perhaps if people criticize elements of autism that the dolls do not acknowledge, it is perhaps a reproduction of the nature of the diagnostic category itself.”

Killick, ASAN’s executive director, acknowledged that it’s impossible to represent every person with autism in one Barbie doll.

“The goal of this was not to represent all autistic people. The goal was to make certain aspects of autistic identity more visible, to represent aspects that people may not know as much, to help break down those stigmas and actually celebrate them,” Killick said.

Barbie doll launches doll with type 1 diabetes

The Barbie Fashionista line includes a type 1 diabetic doll with a pink glucose monitor and an insulin pump.

For example, highlighting tools like AAC tablets can be an opportunity to celebrate differences, Killick says.

“The purpose of this activity, again, is to look at that difference and celebrate that and say this is fun. This is interesting. This is what defines who this person is. And that’s something to celebrate, not to be ashamed of, not to hide. This is a celebration of the visibility of autism,” Killick said.

Weitzman said she feels the new Barbie doll has both the positive side of making people feel seen, and the risk that autism will be perceived as an alien condition. But in any case, it can serve as a starting point for further development.

“The best way to use this doll is to have an open conversation and help a lot of young children understand the diversity of the human experience,” Weitzman said. “If it’s an educational tool and a conversation starter, then Mattel has done something good.”

Greenland is icy, cold, and desolate. How did it get its name?

0

play

Greenland, a mostly icy island, has coined a mysterious name with an interesting history as part of a centuries-old marketing campaign.

The Danish territory is in the news again after President Donald Trump says Greenland should become part of the United States.

But don’t be confused. This island is not green at all. Greenland is largely covered by a huge ice sheet, as it has been for most of the past few millennia.

The story of Greenland’s name is laced with cunning marketing, climate change, and Vikings. Eric the Red chose this name in hopes of attracting more people to this icy island, and now, as the ice sheet melts, the island is actually becoming (a little) greener.

Greenland’s marketing mechanism

“The origin of Greenland’s name is the result of pure commercial marketing,” Arizona State University geography professor Randall Cerveny said in an email to USA TODAY.

“One of the Icelandic sagas (thousand-year-old preserved historical documents) says that Erik the Red, the Icelandic discoverer of Greenland, “set out to settle the country he had found and called it Greenland, saying that if it had a good name people would be attracted to it.”

According to Discover Iceland, “Eric the Red wanted more people to settle there, so he thought a good-sounding name would make people more likely to move there.”

According to Cerveny, this was around 1000 AD.

However, in the native language of the island, the name of the island is greenlandor “Land of Karaalit.” Cerveny said the Karalit people are an indigenous group of Inuit people who live in the western part of the territory.

Greenland hasn’t always been this cold.

A twist on Greenland’s naming: When it was named, the island probably didn’t have much ice.

For thousands of years, Greenland has been largely covered by ice, but experienced localized greening during the Medieval Warm Period (c. 900-1300 AD), when it was settled by the Vikings.

However, even at the height of the Medieval Warm Period, much of Greenland, as much as 80%, remained covered in ice.

Now, a new study published in 2025 says global warming is rapidly melting Greenland’s ice sheet and replacing it with vegetation.

In fact, parts of Greenland are turning green for the first time since the Vikings arrived about 1,000 years ago, said study co-author Jonathan Calivic, a geoscientist at the University of Leeds in the UK.

And where there was snow and ice just a few decades ago, there is now scrubland along with barren rock and wetlands, a 2024 study reported.

An estimated 11,000 square miles of Greenland’s ice sheets and glaciers have melted over the past 30 years, a study says.

Overall, the total area of ice lost over the past 30 years is slightly larger than the area of Massachusetts and about 1.6% of Greenland’s total ice and glacier area.

Iceland’s name causes confusion

Interestingly, neighboring Iceland was actually named by the Vikings for its ice content, even though Greenland is arguably much more desolate.

One of the Icelandic sagas declares that the name of Iceland comes from Floki Vilgelsson, the first Viking who purposely traveled to and stayed in Iceland around 850 AD.

“According to one of the sagas, Floki, after a long and harsh winter camp, climbed a mountain, saw a huge fjord filled with ice, and named the island after it,” Cerveny told USA TODAY.

These two names actually do not correspond to climatological reality.

For example, Greenland recorded the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere at an unimaginably cold 93.3 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is also covered by a huge ice sheet, about two miles thick in some places. Iceland, on the other hand, despite its glaciers, benefits from warmer ocean currents and is much more livable and “greener” around its populated lowlands.

Do you know how big Greenland is?

Greenland is more than 836,000 square miles, three times the size of Texas, and about 80 percent covered by a huge ice sheet.

Due to the limitations of flat maps, islands appear smaller or larger on paper than they actually are. On some maps, it appears to be as large as Africa.

Why is this? On some maps, especially the standard Mercator projection, Greenland appears larger. This is because Greenland is close to the North Pole. These maps also stretch the polar regions to fit the spherical Earth into a flat surface, making high-latitude land areas appear disproportionately large compared to their actual size.

An arctic explosion brings snow and ice. how to drive safely

Another arctic blast is expected to send cold air across much of the eastern and southern United States over the weekend, with temperatures well below normal as far south as Florida. As temperatures drop, roads become covered with ice and snow, increasing the possibility of traffic accidents.

Snow and ice are expected in the Great Lakes region, Ohio Valley, Northeast and parts of the Appalachians, according to the National Weather Service.

Situations like this can put even the most experienced drivers to the test, and the weather can often impair vision and cause uncontrollable skids, catching many drivers by surprise. According to the Federal Highway Administration, slippery roads cause more than 150,000 car accidents each year. Seventy percent of U.S. roads are in snowy areas, putting millions of people at risk for accidents.

Preparing yourself and your car for winter driving is just the first challenge. Here are some tips to help you prepare for winter roads.

Precautions you can take when driving in winter

Even with four-wheel drive, a vehicle’s braking power is significantly reduced on slippery roads. According to AAA, stopping distances should be tripled to avoid collisions.

If you can’t avoid driving when ice or snow worsens road conditions, follow these tips to avoid collisions and getting stuck in ditches.

How to deal with slippery roads

If your car starts to skid, steer it in the desired direction. Do not pump or apply the brakes suddenly.

Which states have the most dangerous winter driving conditions?

Some states pose a higher risk for winter drivers than others. A recent study by MoneyGeek found that 15 states have higher driver fatality rates.

These numbers represent a combination of vehicle mileage data from the Federal Highway Administration from 2020 to 2023 and accident details from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis and Reporting System. The analysis was then weighted by safe driving indicators. In contrast to annual mileage, Michigan recorded 156 deaths during this period.

RFK Jr. talks about vaccines, meat, and microdosing. USA TODAY interview

WASHINGTON — The undisputed architect and leader of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement is here for a rare interview.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a lawyer and activist, spent his first year in office fundamentally changing the way government interacts with health care. Under his leadership, the nation’s vaccine guidelines were rewritten. He literally upended the food pyramid and withheld billions of dollars in subsidies.

We ask Kennedy here about his MAHA movement. This is part of my research for Episode 2 of Extreme Normal, a show that examines how movements, ideas, and leaders once considered fringe have become integral to the mainstream of American politics.

Perhaps no one embodies this trend more than Kennedy. Kennedy, once ridiculed and dismissed for his unconformist views on vaccines, nutrition and exercise, now leads a vast number of followers and followers.

About 4 in 10 parents identify as MAHA supporters, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation/Washington Post poll.

play

RFK Jr. hasn’t had a flu shot since 2005. Here’s why:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hasn’t had a flu shot since 2005 and blamed the vaccine for his voice condition.

And its popularity crosses party lines. Eight in 10 Republicans identify as a MAHA parent, as do 1 in 6 Democrats. Opinion polls found that about a third of parents who identify as independent support the movement.

We’re here primarily to discuss vaccines and nutrition, but also Kennedy’s inherent distrust of the U.S. government’s approach to medicine and science. Episode 2 of Extremely Normal delves into this movement in an attempt to understand the concept of “Crunchy Moms.”

In the past, “crunch” was synonymous with liberal and progressive beliefs. No more. These days, it has become synonymous with conservatives who distrust scientific authority. And Kennedy, who favored the new crunch movement, is revered by that movement.

Over the next 26 minutes, you’ll touch on everything from the benefits of cooking in cast iron pots, to the potential dangers of cell phone towers, to the health benefits of peptide injections.

There will be revelations, new details, and tidbits that hint at Kennedy’s views and beliefs.

among them:

  • Kennedy only eats meat and fermented foods. every day.
  • He attributes his 20-pound weight loss to this “carnivore diet.”
  • The last time he received a vaccine was in 2005.
  • He thought his voice might have been damaged by side effects from the flu shot, so he stopped getting it.
  • He is concerned about 5G cell towers.
  • He does not give seed oil to children.
  • He doesn’t wash cast iron pots.

RFK Jr. says electromagnetic waves are a big health concern

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed concerns about 5G tower and cell phone radiation in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY.

And there was other interesting news Kennedy provided during our conversation, particularly his firm views on vaccines and their safety, which will be featured in Episode 2 of Very Normal.

Twenty minutes later, a member of Kennedy’s staff (and a USA TODAY producer) cuts his hand in front of his neck.

cut. It’s time for a cut.

But I have one more question.

I lean over and ask.

“Have you ever been worried? Is there anything you’re worried about? Have you ever laid awake at night wondering if what you’re introducing could be bad for your health, could be causing people’s deaths?”

First, Kennedy’s answer is pretty standard.

“My job as HHS secretary is to tell people the truth and then let them make decisions. But for an agency like this to be effective, there has to be public trust.”

He continues:

“We don’t tell noble lies. We tell the truth, no matter the consequences.”

fair enough.

But what if following the truth has negative consequences in the future? You ask. Even if it wasn’t your intention?

Now, Kennedy is furious.

“What’s the other option? Is it to manipulate people?” he says. “You’re now encouraging me to manipulate people and lie for your own benefit, and I don’t think that’s a legitimate government job.”

USA TODAY has filmed the entire interview, which will be published next week. You can see Kennedy speak out in favor of red meat, against seed oils, and give his thoughts on microdosing hallucinogens.

Many people would agree with what he says. Many people would disagree.

Wild Card Weekend: 6 teams eliminated from NFL Playoffs. The divisional round will see further reductions as the remaining eight teams will be reduced to just four after the weekend.

The divisional round will be the first time each conference’s No. 1 seeds will play in the postseason. The Denver Broncos are looking to silence Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, while the Seattle Seahawks are hoping for a similar result to their Week 18 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Throughout the season, the competition has looked wide open on both sides of the bracket, and that continues for the remaining eight teams. The Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Rams matchup in the NFC will be the most anticipated of the four games, while the Houston Texans will look to upset the seeding for the second year in a row and play spoiler in the AFC side of the bracket.

Here’s what you need to know about the NFL’s divisional round schedule and how the league’s playoff bracket works.

What are the NFL playoff games this weekend?

Four NFL playoff games will be played as the league’s postseason slot advances to the divisional round. According to the conference, they are:

NFC Division Round Game

NFL division round playoff schedule

The NFL’s Divisional Round games are played on both Saturday and Sunday. Two games will be played each day, starting with the Broncos vs. Bills game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

There will be no “Monday Night Football” games played during the divisional round of the playoffs. The league’s “MNF” schedule ended with the Texans defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-6 in the Wild Card Round.

Below is the complete NFL divisional weekend schedule.

Saturday NFL Playoff Game

  • Denver Broncos vs. Buffalo Bills: CBS 4:30 p.m.
  • Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers: 8 p.m. on Fox

Sunday’s NFL playoff game

  • New England Patriots vs. Houston Texans: 3 p.m. on ESPN/ABC
  • Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Rams: 6:30 p.m. on NBC/Peacock

Updated NFL playoff bracket

The remaining eight teams in the NFL playoffs will all play in the divisional round. The only two teams yet to play heading into Saturday’s game are the top-seeded Broncos and Seahawks, who earned wild-card weekend byes with the best records in their respective conferences.

Here is the complete bracket for the NFL playoffs.

AFC playoff bracket

  • 1st place Denver Broncos vs. 6th place Buffalo Bills
  • 2nd place New England Patriots vs. 5th place Houston Texans

NFC playoff bracket

  • 1st place Seattle Seahawks vs. 6th place San Francisco 49ers
  • 2nd place Chicago Bears vs. 5th place Los Angeles Rams

How does the NFL playoff bracket work?

The NFL’s playoff spots are constantly changing, unlike the static format common in other leagues. This means that seeding will play an important role in future matchups. Based on seeding, the top-seeded Broncos and Seahawks will face the worst remaining team in the conference in the divisional round.

Denver and Seattle will also retain home-field advantage throughout their respective brackets as long as they remain in the playoffs. If either team loses, the best remaining team based on seeding will receive home field advantage.

The No. 1 seed in each conference will receive a bye to the divisional round of the postseason, and the remaining six teams in each conference will play in the wild-card round.

The AFC’s top-seeded Broncos tied their matchup with the 6th-seeded Bills, and the NFC’s top-seeded Seahawks tied their matchup with the 6th-seeded 49ers.

The winners of the divisional round games will meet in their respective conference championship games to determine which team advances to the Super Bowl.

When will the divisional round winners learn their opponents?

The NFL’s conference championship game brackets will be determined by Sunday night after the league’s divisional rounds. The Bears vs. Rams game will be the final contest to end, but once the results are finalized, there will be two teams left in each conference.

Saturday’s winner will know two potential championship game opponents entering Sunday’s game thanks to a fixed bracket. There aren’t many scenarios like a wild card weekend. The winning team simply plays the rest of the conference.

The United States is the world’s top oil producer, but it still wants Venezuela’s output. Is it greedy?

0

play

“Drill, baby, drill!”

It was a solution for President Donald Trump to lower prices for millions of Americans as he campaigned for the top job in 2024. At the time, he wanted to speed up drilling permits, which took an average of 258 days to complete under the Biden administration, increase the frequency of permit sales and increase drilling off U.S. coasts. Most recently, President Trump has applied that mantra to Venezuela, trying to bring its oil to the United States.

But the United States already leads the world in oil production, pumping more oil than it uses. Why do we need Venezuelan oil?

“U.S. refiners based in the Gulf specialize in heavy crude oil,” said Dean Ryulkin, founder of Dean’s List Investment Newsletter. But U.S. oil producers primarily pump light crude oil.

Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia, and Iran are among the countries with large reserves of heavy crude oil that U.S. refineries have been built to process.

What is heavy crude oil and light crude oil?

Heavy and light refer to the weight of the oil. Light crude oil is thin and easy to refine or crack into usable products such as gas or jet fuel.

Also, heavy crude oil is “sour,” meaning it has a high sulfur content and is not environmentally friendly. Light crude oil has a low sulfur content and is called “sweet.”

How does Venezuela fit into this?

Nearly 70% of U.S. refining capacity runs most efficiently on heavy crude oil, which is why 90% of U.S. oil imports are heavy sour crudes, according to the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) industry group.

Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves in the Orinoco Belt, mostly very heavy crude oil. The country’s proven oil reserves are estimated at about 303 billion barrels, higher than Saudi Arabia’s estimated 267 billion barrels. Experts say that if the United States could guarantee a large portion of Venezuela’s supplies, it would be able to reduce dependence on other countries for heavy crude oil, ensure energy security and increase exports of finished products such as gas and diesel.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on ABC’s “This Week” on January 4, “Gulf Coast refineries are the best in the world in terms of refining this heavy crude oil, and given the shortage of heavy crude oil around the world, I think there will be tremendous demand and interest from private industry if given the space.”

Why isn’t the US building more light crude oil refineries?

Refineries are very expensive to build, potentially costing billions of dollars, Ryulkin said.

AFPM said in a blog post that this is a “risky investment that will take decades to permit, construct and ultimately reap the benefits.”

Industry experts say it is also a hotbed of opposition and politics, especially as concerns about climate change and the transition to greener energy grow.

Basab Sen, director of the Climate Justice Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, said in November that easing licensing of energy infrastructure in the United States is a “terrible idea.” Further drilling would have “dire” consequences and increase greenhouse gas emissions and toxic pollution.

The International Energy Agency also pushed for a halt to oil spending in its Net Zero by 2050 report. “There is no need to invest in new fossil fuel supplies.”

Can Venezuelan oil lower prices for Americans?

Possibly, yes. Or, for now, it may at least be able to put a brake on prices, Ryulkin said.

“From an inflation perspective, (the story about Venezuelan oil) is positive,” he said. “Additional capacity may be added, which puts a cap on the price.”

However, achieving sustainable low prices may take a long time. Exxon CEO Darren Woods told President Trump during a meeting with other oil company executives at the White House on January 9 that Venezuela needs to change its laws before it becomes an attractive investment opportunity.

“If you look at the legal and commercial structures and frameworks that are in place in Venezuela today, it is uninvestable,” he said.

Clinton downplays Epstein investigation committee

Republicans announced they would begin contempt of Congress charges against Bill and Hillary Clinton after they failed to appear for scheduled depositions in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Lawyers for the Clintons said in a letter to the committee on January 12 that the Clintons were already cooperating “actively and voluntarily.” “We have been in contact with President Clinton’s legal team in recent months, and they continue to delay, delay, delay,” said the committee’s chairman, Representative James Comer. Bill Clinton was friends with Epstein but denies any wrongdoing.

‘Dilbert’ author Scott Adams dies

Scott Adams, who won wide acclaim for his comic strip “Dilbert” and its satire of corporate life before being banned for comments about race, has died. He is 68 years old and revealed in May 2025 that he had metastatic prostate cancer and did not have much time left to live. “Dilbert” was featured in 2,000 newspapers in 65 countries, and in 2023, Adams commented on his YouTube channel that black people are part of a “hate group” that white people “should run away from.” He said his comments were meant to be an exaggeration. “I lived a wonderful life. I gave it everything I had,” Adams wrote in a Jan. 13 letter read by his ex-wife.

Mike Tomlin ends 19-year tenure with Steelers

While it may not have been completely unexpected, the news that Mike Tomlin will no longer be the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers was still shocking. The team announced the 53-year-old Tomlin’s decision to retire one day after a 30-6 wild-card loss to the Houston Texans. In 19 years, he never lost a game, and his overall record of 201-126-2 makes him one of the winningest coaches in the NFL. “I am truly honored to lead this team,” Tomlin said in a statement. “Although this chapter has come to a close, my respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change.” − Compiled and written by Robert Abitbol

Renee Goode’s family wants justice, but Supreme Court makes it difficult to sue ICE agents

0

Under a recent Supreme Court ruling, lawsuits alleging abuse by federal ICE agents have a narrow path to reach court.

play

It may seem easy at first glance. ICE agents shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, and her family has now hired a prominent law firm to seek justice. In many other situations, you might expect a lawsuit to occur within a few months and, if the officer does not settle, a jury trial within a few years.

But lawsuits involving federal employees follow a different, much narrower path — one shaped by decades of Supreme Court rulings and Congressional choices that have increasingly closed the court’s doors to civil lawsuits seeking justice.

“If you want to sue federal officials for violating the Constitution, you can’t even go to court,” Mike Fox, a legal fellow at the liberal Cato Institute’s Criminal Justice Project, told USA TODAY.

About 50 years ago, the legal prospects for families like Good’s looked bright. In 1971, the Supreme Court had just ruled in a case known as “Bivens” that a man could sue federal drug agents who entered his home without a warrant, handcuffed him, searched his apartment, arrested him and then strip searched him.

But over the past four decades, the Supreme Court has consistently rejected requests to allow other cases against federal employees to proceed, arguing that Congress created an alternative path for federal employees to file administrative claims against the U.S. government for committing one of a small list of crimes that could ultimately be argued before a judge rather than a jury.

This system stands in contrast to what people can do when local or state officials allegedly violate their rights. In these situations, Congress has authorized these officers to be taken directly to court, but plaintiffs must prove that the officers are not subject to certain immunity protections before a jury can hear the case.

As a result, the legal landscape becomes more difficult for individuals who claim they have been abused by federal employees.

“It would probably be impossible to sue individual immigration officials for violating constitutional rights,” said Emma Winger, deputy general counsel for the American Immigration Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes immigrant rights.

Mr. Good’s shooting was followed by a string of violent and controversial incidents involving immigration agents, including the shooting of two men in Portland, Oregon, on January 8, and the shooting of a man in the leg in Minneapolis on January 14. Federal authorities have defended their officers’ actions in all of these cases as self-defense.

Vice President J.D. Vance said Mr. Good was “trying to ram this guy with his car,” and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called that analysis a laughable “delusion.”

ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment.

Here are the legal challenges facing Good’s family and others who say federal immigration officials violated their rights.

Why good families probably can’t go to court directly

The Supreme Court has not only expressed skepticism about extending its 1971 Bivens decision to new contexts. In recent years, it has also blocked lawsuits against federal immigration authorities.

In 2020, the court’s conservative majority ruled that the parents of a Mexican teenager who was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents while crossing the U.S.-Mexico border cannot sue Border Patrol agents for allegedly violating the teenager’s constitutional rights.

In 2022, a conservative majority blocked a lawsuit by a U.S. citizen who claimed Border Patrol agents violated his constitutional rights by pushing him into a vehicle, throwing him to the ground and entering his property without permission.

In both of these decisions, the Supreme Court specifically stated that the authorization of lawsuits under the 1971 Bivens decision was “unfavorable” and expressed particular skepticism about lawsuits against border enforcement agents.

“What I’m saying is that (the Bivens ruling) is so chilling that functionally it’s not really a remedy,” Fox said.

Romanucci & Blandin, the law firm employed by Goode’s family, also acknowledged that it could not take the case directly to court, saying it may instead pursue an administrative lawsuit that could eventually lead to the courtroom.

Antonio M. Romanucci, a founding partner at the firm, said in a statement that “this process does not in any way preclude our passionate pursuit of justice on behalf of Renee Good.”

What can Mr. Good’s family do?

When the Bivens case was decided in 1971, Chief Justice William Brennan wrote on behalf of the Supreme Court’s majority that constitutional rights are “mere words” if federal employees cannot be sued for violating them.

But the Supreme Court recently ruled that these officers don’t have to be sued directly because Congress created an alternative means to address abuse through the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). A law that allows individuals to sue the U.S. government for damages when federal employees cause injury through tort or negligence., Assault by a federal law enforcement officer, etc.

However, the FTCA has its own limitations.

First, the FTCA only allows people to sue for a specific set of wrongdoings. For law enforcement officers, this may include assault, battery, and false imprisonment. These are different from constitutional violations under the Fourth Amendment, where a federal officer unconstitutionally seizes your property or uses excessive force against you. In these cases, there is no remedy under the FTCA unless the claim can be twisted into one of the covered civil violations.

Still, some constitutional violations may also be treated as civil wrongdoing under the FTCA. For example, a claim of excessive force by a federal law enforcement officer may constitute assault or battery under the FTCA. The challenge for plaintiffs like the Goods is fitting their claims into what the FTCA covers and getting past the exceptions that sometimes protect police officers anyway.

“There is still the possibility of restitution through FTCA litigation,” Winger said.

A second limitation on the claim is that plaintiffs are never entitled to a jury trial under the FTCA. Instead, if the government denies the administrative claim or fails to respond for six months, the plaintiffs can file a lawsuit and have a trial before a judge.

Fox says judges are often less appealing to plaintiffs than juries. Many of them first rose to the federal bench by working as federal prosecutors or representing the government as civil attorneys.

Imagine you are a plaintiff alleging that federal officers used excessive force against you, Fox said.

“Do you want a former federal prosecutor to make that decision? Or do you want your neighbor to make that decision? I certainly know which one to choose,” he said.

In a statement, Mr. Romanucci, the Good family’s attorney, characterized the FTCA process as “Byzantine” and “time-consuming” and complained that lawsuits under the law cannot be tried by a jury of local residents.

As ICE becomes more aggressive, Congress could take action

Good’s family’s law firm has expressed particular outrage at the difficulty of prosecuting federal officials for alleged wrongdoing, but they are not alone in their frustration with tactics used by immigration officials under the Trump administration.

For example, a group of people in the Los Angeles area sued the Trump administration in 2025, alleging that ICE agents were violating their constitutional rights by stopping people based on their race, the language they speak, and the type of work they do. The lawsuit sought an order to change ICE’s practices but was allowed because it did not seek monetary compensation.

A district judge in the case had barred ICE officers from stopping people based on broad demographic and location-based factors in July, but the Supreme Court blocked that ruling in September as the government continued to appeal.

Winger said previous administrations have taken a more targeted approach to immigration enforcement, but since Trump returned to the Oval Office, there has been a “dramatic increase” in indiscriminate immigration enforcement, use of force, racial profiling, and the creation of “theater” around immigration enforcement.

“We really need guardrails and ways to ensure that these officers comply with the law and are held accountable if they do not comply with the law,” she said.

The Trump administration has defended its tactics, saying government agents are questioning people based on reasonable suspicion that they are in the country illegally and that protesters are trying to prevent ICE from carrying out its mission.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a court filing that speaking Spanish or working on a construction site “increases the likelihood that someone is in the United States illegally,” arguing that these are factors that ICE officers can consider.

But some members of Congress agree with Winger.

A group of Democrats has introduced a bill known as the Bivens Act that would allow lawsuits against federal employees, just as lawsuits are already allowed against state employees. But without support from the Republican majority and the White House, it is unlikely to pass during the Trump administration.

“When federal employees violate the Constitution, they should be punished to the fullest extent to the same standards as state and local employees,” Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), one of the bill’s sponsors, said in a statement.

Supreme Court upholds gun owners’ challenge to Hawaii’s ‘vampire rule’

0

The Supreme Court is deciding whether the state of Hawaii can require permission from gun owners before carrying concealed guns onto private property open to the public, such as stores.

play

WASHINGTON – In Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic horror novel, Dracula could not enter a room without being invited.

In a Supreme Court case the justices will hear on Jan. 20, gun rights advocates are accusing Hawaii and other states of enacting the “Vampire Rule,” a law that requires gun owners to get verbal, written or posted permission before taking concealed guns onto private property open to the public, such as stores.

They argue that the default assumption should be that handgun possession is allowed on private property that is open to the public unless the owner explicitly prohibits it.

Their challenge (which the Trump administration took the unusual step of encouraging the Supreme Court to hear before waiting for the government’s opinion) does not require the justices to delve into 19th-century literature. However, this would require reviewing laws from the colonial and reconstruction eras.

That’s because the Supreme Court, in a landmark 2022 decision, said that for gun laws to be constitutional, they must be consistent with the country’s historical tradition of gun control.

Supreme Court expands gun rights

The court’s 6-3 decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen also significantly expanded the Second Amendment right to bear arms outside the home.

After a court struck down a New York law restricting who can carry guns in public, Hawaii and other Democratic-led states focused instead on where guns can be carried.

The Trump administration urged the Supreme Court to get involved, arguing that Hawaii, California, Maryland, New York and New Jersey are fleeing to avoid complying with the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling.

“Because most owners do not post signs allowing or prohibiting guns, and because it is virtually impossible to act in public without setting foot on private property that is open to the public, Hawaii law operates as a near-total ban on carrying in public,” the Justice Department said in a court filing.

Hawaii said its law passed in 2023 supports both the right to bear arms and the right of property owners to keep guns away.

“Congress enacted this default rule based on ample evidence that Hawaii property owners do not want people to bring guns onto their property without their explicit consent,” lawyers for the state said in written arguments, referring to the state’s long tradition of restricting weapons, even before Hawaii became a state.

For example, in 1833, the Hawaiian king prohibited anyone from possessing knives, sword canes, and other dangerous weapons, the Hawaii attorney general said in court.

Gun rights lawsuits are on the rise.

The gun rights case the Supreme Court will hear this term is not the only challenge to Hawaii’s law.

Justices will consider in March whether a federal law that prohibits drug users from owning guns applies to a man who was not using drugs at the time of his arrest.

The justices are also deciding whether to challenge a state law banning AR-15s and high-capacity magazines, and a federal ban on gun possession by convicted felons.

Lawsuits over gun control soared after the court ruled in 2022 that gun control must be based on historical tradition.

Lower courts have struggled to apply that standard.

Lower courts were divided over Hawaii law.

In the Hawaii case, the district court judge’s preliminary opinion was that the state law failed.

When Hawaii appealed, the San Francisco-based Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the state and ruled that Hawaii’s law was constitutional.

The appeals court pointed to several historic regulations, particularly one enacted in New Jersey in 1771 and one enacted in Louisiana in 1865, both of which required a permit before bringing firearms onto private property. These laws, the court said, were “destructive” to Hawaii’s regulations.

Three Maui residents and the state’s gun owners’ group, which are challenging Hawaii’s rules, say those laws don’t apply to the facts in this case. New Jersey law prohibited poachers from hunting on private land not open to the public. And Louisiana’s law was aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of formerly enslaved people.

Hawaii also completely bans guns in some public areas, including beaches, parks, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol (the Supreme Court has not considered this regulation), effectively banning gun owners from carrying guns in public almost anywhere, they argue.

Hawaii counters by saying, for example, gun owners only need permission from employees to bring guns into stores or convenience stores.

“Certainly, the employee may say no, but that possibility does not make this law unconstitutional, since we all agree that property owners have the right to remove guns if they wish,” state attorneys said in a filing.

Gun owners say they are treated like ‘monsters’

Gun rights groups argue that Hawaii’s law is not motivated by a desire to protect private property rights, but rather because Hawaii wants to go after gun owners.

Like the novel “Dracula,” several gun rights groups wrote in a letter supporting the challenge that Hawaii “treats people with carry permits as if they were monsters that must be exorcised.”

In a separate brief, the National Gun Rights Association said the state’s “vampire rule” requires store owners to take public positions on highly controversial issues.

“Employees who support the constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense face a Hobsonian choice,” the group wrote. “He can make his opinions public and risk offending many would-be customers, or he can suppress his preferences so that people can exercise their right to own property.”

“The Foundations of American Identity”

Groups working to reduce gun violence are concerned that the conservative court could not only strike down Hawaii’s law, but do so in a way that increases scrutiny of the historic tradition it created to evaluate gun control. All of the justices except Justice Clarence Thomas, who authored the 2022 decision, made that standard clear in their 2024 decision, explaining that gun control does not need to be historically accurate to uphold modern rules.

Billy Clark, an attorney with the Giffords Law Center, said if the court upholds the change, it would allow Hawaii to argue that its law fits within the nation’s long history of regulating private property in general.

“Historically, states have always set default rules for the use of property,” Clark said. “So you can’t simply assume it’s okay to bring your dog to a restaurant.”

Douglas Letter, chief legal officer of the Brady Gun Control Advocacy Group, said private property rights are “foundational to our American identity and embedded in our entire system of government.”

“It’s absolutely clear that the wealthy white men who created the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights had one of the main things in mind: protecting property,” he said.

An MSC Cruises ship has been flooded due to a water main failure.

Video footage uploaded to YouTube by Brazilian news outlet UOL showed water pooling in the hallways of the MSC Seaview. In one clip, a guest is seen sitting barefoot on a wet stateroom carpet.

The cruise line confirmed that the incident occurred on January 12th. According to Cruise Mapper, the ship is currently on a week-long voyage to South America, departing from Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on January 10th.

MSC told USA TODAY in an emailed statement: “We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers as a result of the onboard leak.” “A fault was detected in a water pipe which unfortunately resulted in water ingress into a number of guest cabins and public corridors. The fault was quickly identified and resolved by our technical team and all affected cabins were thoroughly cleaned.”

The company did not say how many cabins were affected, but said the breach posed “no risk to guest safety” and that the cruise line had contacted passengers and provided assistance to them. “Depending on the severity of the guest’s impact, we have offered a range of compensation, including cabin upgrades, full refunds, and up to $150 in onboard credit,” MSC added.

This type of incident is not the only one that has occurred in recent years. In 2023, a water pipe burst on a Carnival Cruise Line ship, flooding part of the ship.

Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe home is up for sale following death of actor and wife

Nearly a year after their deaths, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s New Mexico estate is on the market.

The 13,000-square-foot stucco property in Santa Fe is on the market for $6.25 million, Tara S. Early and Ricky Allen of Sotheby’s International Realty confirmed to the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Thursday, Jan. 15. A luxury real estate brand is overseeing the sale of this home.

Hackman, a strong character actor who won two Oscars in a career spanning more than 60 years, died along with his wife, Arakawa, in February after the couple’s bodies were discovered by police in their home on February 26.

The mysterious circumstances surrounding Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths prompted a thorough investigation, including the release of police body camera footage detailing the conditions of their residence and Arakawa’s online activities in the weeks leading up to their deaths.

“Some buyers may be reluctant to buy a property where a fatal accident has occurred,” Earley told The Wall Street Journal. “There are other buyers for whom that is not an issue. We are selling this property on its merits and all the positives.”

Earley and Allen added that all of the couple’s personal belongings had been removed from the home and the residence had been “professionally staged” for prospective buyers.

Hackman and Arakawa’s leafy two-story home, nestled in the dry hills of Santa Fe, offered the acclaimed actors a respite from the turmoil of Hollywood in their later years.

According to Architectural Digest, the property was a labor of love for the couple, rebuilding it from the studs up in a combination of Pueblo, Colonial and Spanish Baroque styles.

One of the highlights of this home is the large living space with a state-of-the-art stereo system and large stately columns. “I wanted a big room that felt like a saloon, with other rooms opening up from it instead of being closed off by lots of walls,” Hackman told AD in 1990. “It’s completely different from other houses.”

According to the magazine, Hackman, who was also a visual artist, was heavily involved in the design of the house, sometimes mixing colors from his own painter’s palette to achieve the hues he wanted for the house. He lived in Santa Fe for 40 years, most of that time in a renovated home.

After their deaths, Hackman and Arakawa were found by authorities in separate rooms, with Arakawa in the bathroom outside the front door and Hackman in the mudroom.

Dr. Heather Jarrell, New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, said her office’s investigation determined that Hackman, 95, died of natural causes. The actor also suffered from heart disease and complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, 65-year-old Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease transmitted through contact with rat feces.

Was Renee Good part of a “leftist network” as the Trump team claims?

“There is no genius at the Soros Foundation to strategically allocate funds to left-wing groups,” says a former top domestic terrorism official at the Justice Department.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and senior administration officials have claimed that the Jan. 7 shooting death of Minnesota resident Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was prompted by Good’s participation in a left-wing extremist network that directs people to attack federal agents.

However, the government has not provided any public evidence linking Good (who was driving his own car when he was shot) to such a network.

Vice President J.D. Vance said at a press conference on January 8 that Ms. Goode’s death was “a tragedy of her own making, and a tragedy of the entire movement against our law enforcement officers, the far left, which has brought together a rabid faction.”

FBI Director Kash Patel went further on the night of January 15th in an interview with the right-wing online show Real America’s Voice.

“The general consensus is that these protests, whether it’s in Minneapolis or Los Angeles or Portland or wherever, are not spontaneous,” Patel said. “They don’t magically appear. … Someone has to pay for the transportation. Someone has to pay for the sign.”

He said the protests against recently stepped up ICE enforcement are, in my opinion, “a coordinated effort to criminally cause chaos and disrupt the community.”

Asked by USA TODAY about the details underlying Patel’s claims, the FBI declined to comment. Ministry of Justice and the white house He did not respond to several requests for comment. And the White House doubled down on its claims of an organized conspiracy, although it did not provide specifics.

“Left-wing organizations are inciting violent riots across the country, conducting systematic attacks on law enforcement officers, organizing illegal poison extraction operations, and arranging drop sites for weapons and riot materials,” White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson said in a statement. “The Trump Administration is taking a whole-of-government approach to getting to the bottom of this vast network of inciting violence in American society.”

Good’s family and friends said she was a devoutly religious mother of three who was fulfilling her civic duty by supporting anti-ICE protests in her hometown of Minneapolis, where as many as 3,000 federal agents are swarming to hunt undocumented immigrants as part of the Trump administration’s deportation plan.

“Our legal team is aggressively addressing the persistent falsehoods circulating online that misrepresent Renee Good’s background,” said Antonio Romanucci, an attorney representing Good’s family. “Renee and Becca Good were responsible community members, lived peacefully, and did not engage in harmful acts toward others, including the federal officers involved on January 7, 2026.”

Many domestic extremism experts, including former Justice Department and FBI experts, say that while there may be some truth to the claims that a left-wing network exists, there is virtually no evidence that the Trump administration’s claims link it to terrorism or goodness.

There is little in court records or the Justice Department’s indictment to support claims of a national network of well-funded extremists planning violent or destructive confrontations with federal law enforcement.

“There’s no genius Soros Foundation that would strategically allocate money to all these organizations with some kind of master plan,” said Thomas Brzozowski, who served as the Justice Department’s domestic terrorism adviser for nearly a decade until last September.

Brzozowski, who served as an FBI consultant on domestic terrorism cases from 2010 to 2015 before moving to the Justice Department, told USA TODAY that he was in government for an organized left-wing violent extremist network that trained people how to weaponize vehicles, throw bricks and do some of the other acts that President Trump and administration officials have claimed, but found no evidence.

On January 15, as protests over Goode’s death continued, President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807, which authorizes the president to send in the U.S. military to quell insurrections and civil disturbances.

“I will enact the Insurrection Act to stop Minnesota’s corrupt politicians from not following the law and professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking ICE patriots who are just trying to do their job. Many presidents have done so…” President Trump said in a social media post.

What happened to Renee Good?

President Trump has dramatically increased immigration enforcement domestically, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Trump’s immigration adviser Stephen Miller demanding immigration officials make 3,000 arrests per day in May.

Immigration enforcement agents are mainly sent to cities and states run by Democrats, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Massachusetts. Some of the operatives, often wearing masks and full body armor, sprayed protesters with pepper spray, manhandled and detained American citizens, and shot and killed at least 11 people, including Good.

In Minneapolis, Ms. Good was the director of her young son’s school, and the document was related to a document encouraging parents to monitor ICE and direct training after the agency began ramping up raids on the school in recent weeks.

Video of the Jan. 7 encounter in Minneapolis shows Good stopping his Honda Pilot in the middle of a suburban road and driving away as agents approached. As she did so, veteran ICE officer Jonathan Ross shot her three times at close range.

What did Trump, Vance and Noem say?

Within hours of the Jan. 7 incident, Noem described Good’s actions as “domestic terrorism” at a press conference.

Noem said Good disobeyed commands to get out of the car and “used his car as a weapon” to “attempt to run over” Ross, and Noem claimed he fired the fatal shots in self-defense.

Minnesota authorities disputed Noem’s account, citing video that showed Good trying to drive away from agents as Ross fired a second and third shot into the side of the car.

Noem said people like Good were “trained and instructed to run over agents.” And Good herself was part of an “organized” left-wing operation that “targeted (agents) with her car,” Noem said.

Mr. Vance claimed that Mr. Good was part of an “extensive left-wing network that attacks, oppresses, raids, and disables ICE officers from doing their jobs.”

Neither Noem nor Vance have publicly identified specific organizations, legal cases, investigative or intelligence results, training programs, funding sources or communications networks that demonstrate Goode’s involvement in left-wing extremist operations opposed to immigration enforcement in Minneapolis.

The Departments of Homeland Security and Justice and the FBI did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions about providing evidence to support the Trump administration’s claims. The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Is there a “dissonance” between President Trump’s rhetoric and facts?

Experts in extremism and terrorism law told USA TODAY that the administration’s rhetoric is not consistent with publicly available evidence or understanding of how such domestic networks operate.

Most of the country’s extremist networks are fueled by right-wing grievances and include “nihilistic violent extremist” groups of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and anti-government agitators, Brzozowski and other extremism researchers and former federal law enforcement officials said.

For decades, domestic right-wing extremism and terrorism has far outstripped those committed by left-wing groups, according to the FBI, Justice Department and outside groups.

Terrorists inspired by Islamist ideology accounted for 87% of deaths in attacks on U.S. soil since 1975, most of them in the September 11, 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

A report released last September by the libertarian CATO Institute said that “right-wingers were the second most motivating ideology, accounting for 391 murders and 11 percent of the total.” “The definition of right-wing terrorist here includes terrorists motivated by white supremacy, anti-abortion beliefs, involuntary celibacy (incels), and other right-wing ideologies.”

A report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found an unusual increase in incidents allegedly motivated by leftists in 2025, but said that “such violence has risen from very low levels and remains well below historic levels of violence by right-wing and jihadist actors.”

“There’s a dissonance between what I’ve heard law enforcement people say under oath in Congressional hearings and this rhetoric that the Trump administration is using,” Brzozowski said.

One notable exception on the left, Brzozowski said, is the Black Bloc, an anarchist group that has made headlines for setting fire to buildings and cars and attacking police during recent events such as the 1999 World Trade Organization summit in Seattle and the 2020 protests after the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

Brzozowski said protests and sporadic violence after controversial law enforcement incidents are not in themselves evidence of a professionalized or centrally-led terrorist organization. If such a left-wing network exists, there will be arrests and prosecutions in connection with it, he added.

When authorities start using terms like “domestic terrorism” without evidence of planning, coordination or organizational structure, “the terms are stripped of their meaning,” Brzozowski said in an interview.

Some evidence of “organized anti-ICE” groups

Some analysts say there is certainly something to the Trump administration’s claims of an organized network, although they stop short of describing them as violent instigators or domestic terrorists.

Joshua Sinai, a domestic and international counterterrorism security analyst with more than 30 years of experience, told USA TODAY, “While I downplay any ties to Soros, it appears that there are organized anti-ICE groups that are spearheading protests across the country and providing propaganda and material support to demonstrators.”

Sinai, who worked for several years at the Department of Homeland Security’s National Operations Center during the George W. Bush administration, said he is currently studying all politically motivated violent attackers in the United States and Australia since 2014.

looking for a connection that doesn’t exist

Michael German, a former FBI domestic terrorism investigator and terrorism and civil rights analyst at the Brennan Center for Justice, said the Trump administration has been trying to concoct a false left-wing terrorist plot since the beginning of Trump’s first term, without success.

“The same accusations are being made against Black Lives Matter and environmental groups in 2020,” German said, as well as against a wide range of other left-wing protest groups.

German said law enforcement agencies in the Trump administration and past administrations have “expended significant efforts to identify these networks, but have been unable to produce an indictment that would reveal the existence of such networks.”

During the 2020 protests following Floyd’s killing, FBI agents went undercover to investigate these networks, going into New York City police custody and interviewing arrested protesters, German said. Amid protests surrounding wildfires in Oregon and Northern California, state, local and federal agency officials at the government’s Information Fusion Center reported that “anarchists in vans are moving into fire zones to start fires or delay response.” This report was later proven to be false.

German said he is “not aware of any” evidence linking Good or other anti-ICE protesters to domestic terrorism.

German said of the Trump administration’s claims about Goode and unspecified extremist networks: “This is how they’ve been using this radicalization theory that they’ve adopted, even though there’s no empirical evidence to suggest it’s accurate.” “This is an effort to criminalize protest and criminalize any political organization that opposes existing government policies.”
