Ford and Carhartt partner to develop skilled technicians and launch Super Duty

  • Ford and Carhartt announce a multi-year partnership to support skilled workers.
  • The partnership will focus on talent development, community building, and tooling.
  • The new co-branded Super Duty Carhartt Edition pickup is expected to go on sale later this year.

For years, Carhartt has provided clothing for many workers before heading to the job site in their Ford pickup trucks. In fact, in the 1920s, Carhartt made coveralls for Ford factory workers.

It is therefore logical that the two companies team up again, this time to promote their respective products and attract new talent to the skilled trade by supporting “America’s vital economy.”

On January 13, as part of the Detroit Auto Show, Ford CEO Jim Farley and Carhartt CEO Linda Hubbard announced a multi-year strategic partnership between the two companies that will impact three areas Farley calls the “essential economy”: workforce development, community building and tool delivery. All of this will help support the skilled industry. The deal also includes new co-branded merchandise and a special edition 2027 Super Duty Carhartt truck to be released later this year. The companies will also open ToolBank USA in Detroit.

“This is a critical issue for our country,” Ford Philanthropy CEO Mary Culler told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. “These are jobs that people aren’t having, and we want to make sure they are. If we don’t, we’re just going to have a severe shortage in five to 10 years. There’s already a shortage of electricians and plumbers. So we want to litigate here and make sure we do our part.”

Mr. Farley has long advocated for the essential economy, which is industries such as manufacturing, utilities, transportation, construction, and energy. In September, Mr. Farley organized a summit called “Ford Pro Accelerate: The Essential Economy,” which brought about 300 leaders to Detroit’s Michigan Central Station to discuss ways to accelerate productivity in the essential economy. Ford spent nearly $1 billion renovating Michigan Central Station, but Farley and Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford both said the work would not have been possible without the work of skilled craftsmen.

Carhartt and Ford had already talked about ways to work together, but it was after that meeting that the idea really came together, Carhartt’s Hubbard told the Detroit Free Press.

“We’ve been thinking about how to elevate these opportunities in the skilled trades, and we’re already doing that through a campaign that celebrates hard-working people and what these jobs truly mean to America and our entire way of life,” Hubbard said. “But then Jim brought it up and built an entire acceleration conference around it. What we found at Carhartt is that when you find like-minded organizations, it actually amplifies the power and scale of what you can do.”

Ford + Carhartt provides training, scholarships and tools

One of the topics Mr. Farley has often talked about is Ford’s need for skilled tradesmen, especially service technicians at dealerships. On Sept. 30, he said, “This morning, we have 6,000 empty stores in our dealerships and probably no technicians to work there.”

Attracting the next generation of engineers is the goal of both companies. So Ford is partnering with high schools and community colleges to quickly develop training programs to train and hire service technicians. The initiative includes a partnership between Ford Philanthropies, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, and the TechForce Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports engineers with scholarships and training. The companies will work to support Ford’s AutoTech Scholars program, which the Detroit Free Press reported last spring provides scholarships to aspiring service technicians. This program helps fund training and the cost of technician tools, certification costs, and travel expenses.

Ford Philanthropies’ Collar said Ford has already trained 1,400 scholars in the program, and Carhartt will provide them with uniforms.

The companies are also paying for a tool bank in Detroit, which is being built by volunteers from Ford Philanthropy and stocked with hundreds of tools available for rent. ToolBank USA is a nonprofit organization that provides access to tools for community revitalization, trade education, and disaster relief.

The Detroit Tool Bank on Milwaukee Avenue will open next month. It also serves as a training ground for the next generation of craftsmen. Workshops will be held on power tool safety and precision handling of complex machinery.

The tool bank will also offer a free tool loan program to provide, store and repair tools and equipment to local organizations and workers. Each year, we supply more than 5,000 volunteers and 25,000 tools across the country.

After the pandemic, Carhartt opened a tool library at its Detroit location and has “borrowed” 90,000 tools from there, Hubbard said. Culler added that when Ford learned about Carhartt’s library and learned Tool Bank was coming, “that got Ford thinking about how we can leverage our superpower, mobility, to actually get tools into other people’s hands. So as part of our partnership with Tool Bank USA in Detroit, we’re going to give them the F-150.”

The pickup truck donated by Ford will be equipped with a mobile generator called “ProPower On Board.”

Finally, Ford and Carhartt, along with uniform provider Cintas, are launching a new program in late 2025 to provide dealer technicians with new, durable uniforms. Uniforms include shirts, pants, jackets, sweatshirts, footwear and accessory options, and are delivered through Cintas in men’s and women’s sizes.

Retailers can choose from two program options: a managed workwear program or direct purchase. Through Cintas’ stewardship program, uniforms are professionally cleaned, inspected, and repaired or replaced as necessary.

Show people that these are high paying jobs

“What both companies are trying to do is help young people understand that these are great careers that our country needs,” Hubbard said. “If you ask people how important this is to the infrastructure and future economy of this country, everyone will say it’s important. But we haven’t been able to show people how to get there or what to do.”

The partnership will provide training, funding, scholarships, tools and joint products to encourage people to pursue that path, Hubbard said.

“Some skilled trades pay wages 25% to 50% higher than the average wage in the United States,” Hubbard said. “Yes, I have a little time to invest in training, but not enough time to get a four-year degree.”

Hubbard and Culler said these jobs can lead to advancement into the upper echelons of a construction company or even the possibility of owning your own business one day.

“If you’re a skilled auto technician, you’re making a six-figure salary. It takes a few years to get there, but like any career, if you put your mind to it, you can do very well,” Culler said. “That’s what we want people to see and understand that these are really viable career opportunities.”

special super duty

Additionally, the Ford and Carhartt partnership will include new products and Ford trucks, starting with the 2027 Super Duty Carhartt truck, which will go on sale “later this year.” At Carhartt, that means special branded jackets, pants and T-shirts, including Ford branding. Hubbard said the clothing will be available for general sale at www.carhartt.com or at the store on Cass Avenue in Detroit. He did not provide further details, but said he would share more closer to launch.

Inspiration for many of the details of the 2027 Super Duty Carhartt truck came after Ford designers visited a Carhartt store in Detroit last year. They gained insight into the different textures, colors and functionality of Carhartt products, including wheels inspired by Detroit manhole covers outside the flagship store.

Ford said more details, including the pickup truck and pricing, will be revealed in the coming months.

Naomi Watts doesn’t want you to ignore this menopause symptom

0

play

Naomi Watts knows about hot flashes and mood swings, and as she goes through perimenopause and menopause, she’s also learned about frozen shoulder and joint pain.

But there was one symptom she ignored for years because she didn’t know it was part of this change. That’s dry eye.

The actress, known as a menopause advocate, is now encouraging women to talk to their doctors and advocate for themselves.

Watts, 57, is the co-founder of Stripes, a menopausal health and beauty brand. She shared personal stories and spoke with doctors and experts in her 2025 book, Dare I Say: Everything You Want to Know About Menopause. She is currently partnering with Johnson & Johnson to raise awareness about the importance of eye health for midlife women.

“All I knew about menopause was what you see on TV and in movies and in books: that women go crazy and have hot flashes and mood swings,” Watts told USA TODAY. “But it’s obviously much deeper and more complex. If you’re educated, it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom.”

Watts went through menopause shortly after giving birth to her second child.

She understood that lack of estrogen affects the skin, hair, and joints. But she wasn’t thinking about her eyes.

Charissa Lee, an optometrist and director of vision at Johnson & Johnson, says menopause can cause blurred, dry, and tired eyes. Lee points out that menopause is the time when many women realize they need reading glasses.

Women often forget to tell their dentist or eye doctor when they are entering perimenopause or menopause. They don’t understand that menopause can affect every part of the body.

“Getting an eye exam is probably one of the easiest steps in this journey,” says Lee.

Watts says many women are afraid to tell their doctors about their menopausal symptoms because “it makes them doubt you and make you feel like you’re whining.”

Her friends said that when they consulted doctors about menopausal symptoms, they were recommended antidepressants and sleeping pills instead of considering the possibility of hormone replacement therapy.

More than one-third of women going through menopause or perimenopause are prescribed Zoloft, Prozac, Wellbutrin, or other common antidepressants. Its use among women has doubled in the past few years. Now, more women’s health experts say the majority didn’t need them. Antidepressants treat the symptoms, not the cause, and can make things worse.

More than 100 symptoms are associated with perimenopause and menopause, but women are often unaware of the connections between them and are unable to share their symptoms with their doctors.

That can be frustrating and isolating, Watts says.

She recommends bringing a list of symptoms to your appointment.

She wants women to know that they are not alone in experiencing menopause or perimenopause. “I think we’re the only ones going through something like this,” she says. “But there are often very simple solutions to some of these symptoms.”

President Trump receives cheers and boos during Indiana vs. Miami championship game

President Donald Trump received a mix of cheers and boos during the national championship game between Indiana University and the University of Miami.

On January 19, President Trump was shown on a screen during the national anthem at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The president’s appearance also received mixed reactions from fans who attended a viewing party at Simon Skyot Assembly Hall on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

President Trump made headlines over the long weekend for his increasing focus on buying Greenland, vowing to impose new tariffs on eight European countries unless the US fails to do so.

Trump has attended numerous sporting events since returning to office a year ago, including the Daytona 500 and the U.S. Open tennis finals. Last fall, he was booed when he played in the finals at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami native, was scheduled to attend Monday’s game against President Trump.

Other politicians attending the game include Indiana Governor Mike Braun.

Dolly Parton’s 80th Birthday – Watch the country star’s sweet tribute

Keith Urban, Laney Wilson and other country music stars send heartfelt wishes to Dolly Parton on her 80th birthday.

play

Some of the biggest names in country music are showering love on the legendary Dolly Parton, who turns 80 on Monday, January 19th, and sharing stories that highlight how deeply she shaped a generation of artists.

Laney Wilson begins the 17-minute compilation video by explaining how her first meeting with Parton is forever etched in her memory.

“I’ll never forget the first time I met you. You treated me like we’d known each other forever,” the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer said. “What you said to me that day was, ‘Do you have a good manager?’” And I said, “Yes, I do.” And you said, “So, is he ——?” And I said, “Yes.” she teeth. ‘And she’s right there with her curly hair. ”

Keith Urban paid tribute to Parton with a childhood flashback of him singing her song “Applejack” when she was 10 years old.

“You’ve been a huge inspiration to me for a long time, darling,” Urban said. “Thank you for everything you’ve ever done, both musically and as a person…the songs you’ve written, the people you’ve helped…the goodness you’ve brought to the world with your heart and curiosity and passion, and your insane musical talent.”

Parton surprised Carly Pearce with a recording announcing her as a new member of the Grand Ole Opry. The “Next Girl” singer previously worked at Dollywood, but said the announcement marks a full-circle moment for her, adding, “I begged my parents to let me quit high school and homeschool so I could work 9-to-5 at Dollywood.”

Kody Johnson’s birthday message was simple: “Dolly, I have nothing to say to you, but thank you. Thank you for the life you gave us.”

Mickey Guyton called Parton the love of his life.

“Dolly Parton has been a part of my life since I was little,” she said, adding, “She should be the president of the world if she can do that.”

“She has the best waist, the best breasts and the best personality,” Guyton joked, adding, “I thanked her for being born and for her contribution to this world.”

One of the most vivid compliments came from Ricky Skaggs, who recalled producing Parton’s “White Limozeen” and visiting her home.

“I was so grateful and so honored to be able to produce your record,” he said. While listening to the demo, Parton was cooking green beans, or what he called “leather britches,” for him and Karl Dean.

“I heard Karl screaming and swearing and saying 14 words that I can’t say here…He was very upset that you had burnt the beans in the leather pants you were waiting for.”

Ms. Skaggs recalled Ms. Parton calmly scraping away the burnt beans and plating the rest.

“They were so good. It’s a memory I’ll never forget,” said a fellow Opry member. “I’ll never forget you either.”

Producer Don Miggs shared some advice he still takes to heart. Miggs said that when she first met the country music star, she was embarrassed by her blue hair and that Parton told her, “Honey, never change it…that hair, everything will be fine with it.”

These are just a few of the stories about artists whose accomplishments are recognized not just by their hits and fame, but by the kindness and friendship that is bestowed upon them.

Stellantis CEO says he loves his job as he works to revive the brand

0

play

  • Six months into his role as CEO of Stellantis, Antonio Filosa said he is confident about the brand’s future.
  • Filosa did not rule out the possibility of the automaker’s 15-brand portfolio shrinking.
  • He said relations with dealers and the UAW, which had been strained under the previous CEO, are improving.

After six months on the job, Stellantis’ new CEO Antonio Filosa said he is “very enjoying” the role of leading one of the world’s largest automakers.

Filosa met on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show this week with members of the news media, including the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, to discuss the future of a brand that is executing a turnaround plan and recovering from years of declining sales and strained relationships with stakeholders including its dealers and the United Auto Workers union.

Here are Filosa’s five key takeaways during a 30-minute conversation with a reporter over a paper cup of espresso at the Stellantis booth at the car show.

Do you want to keep all the brands? “Interesting question”

Filosa did not rule out the possibility of downsizing or changing the large international portfolio of car brands.

With sales and profits scattering for Stellantis, which owns North American nameplates Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram and 10 other European badges, as well as a large stake in Chinese automaker Leap Motors, many expected the brand to sell or discontinue some of its underperforming brands, including Maserati and Alfa Romeo in the United States.

Asked if he plans to keep his family together, Filosa said it was an interesting question and that he intended to tackle it in earnest at Capital Markets Day in 2026.

“We’re privileged, aren’t we?” Filosa said of the brand’s vast portfolio. “Everyone wants to own a Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen or Opel, so we’re honored to have some of the biggest, historic brands in our portfolio.”

Stellantis hasn’t announced a date yet, but “we’re going to discuss that as well” on Capital Markets Day, Filosa said.

Filosa says he’s ‘enjoying’ his time as CEO

Mr. Filosa took over as CEO in June, and in his first six months has faced a changing market and regulatory landscape as the federal government has challenged all automakers with blanket tariffs and the removal of broad federal support for electrification.

But despite the potentially stressful first few months on the job, Filosa said she’s doing well personally and enjoying the role.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Filosa said with a smile. “I love my job. I love the people I work with. I love our team. I love our brand. How can I be sad?”

“We’ve had a challenging year,” he said, adding that he was confident about the future.

“But if the question is about myself, I’m happy. I’m married, a strong family, a good family,” he said.

Filosa said his CEO position relocated him to the Detroit metropolitan area and he has spent about half of his time in the United States over the past six months.

Relationship with dealers is being repaired

Filosa’s predecessor, Carlos Tavares, will leave Stellantis at the end of 2024. During the final months of his tenure, tensions rose between the company’s upper management and the dealers in the network.

Dealers sent a scathing letter to Tavares in September 2024, calling his leadership decisions short-sighted and accusing him of bringing “disaster” to the dealerships. The letter argues that Tavares is prioritizing short-term success in 2023 (a year in which the company secured record profits) over long-term survival, and that dealers face weak sales and declining market share in 2024. Dealers also criticized Mr. Tavares for cutting jobs while reaping a paycheck of about $40 million in 2023.

Filosa said the brand has “significantly” improved its relationships with dealers by diversifying its powertrain offerings and staying in constant contact.

“We are in constant dialogue with our dealers,” Filosa said, adding that he responds to all messages he receives from them. “I’m happy with the way the relationship is progressing and I believe it can improve further.”

Union relations also improved

Similarly, Tavares and the UAW had a contentious relationship during his time leading the company. The UAW led a months-long campaign against Mr. Tavares, holding frequent rallies and at one point threatening to attack the company for not fulfilling a contract negotiated in 2023.

Filosa said he is also working to maintain better relations between the company and its unions, which have been dramatically troubled over the past few years.

“As a team, we were able to re-address some past disputes and build relationships with unions, dealers and suppliers,” Filosa said. “Every day it gets better and better.”

Filosa also cited the company’s $13 billion investment in its Midwest operations, the largest in the company’s 100-year history, which is expected to create approximately 5,000 additional jobs at the Stellantis factory and an additional 20,000 jobs at third-party suppliers.

“Our projection is 25,000 jobs overall. Obviously, that’s good news not only for us but for the (UAW),” Filosa said.

Ever-changing EV strategy

In a year of rapid change in U.S. electric vehicle policy, Stellantis has retired, canceled or transitioned several EVs in an effort to revive and reinvigorate the internal combustion engine.

The brand discontinued production of all plug-in hybrid vehicles this month, including the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4x. Ram has discontinued its electric pickup and instead focused on an extended-range version of the truck. Dodge has done away with the slow battery-powered charger.

Filosa said policy changes to reduce incentives for EVs “have given customers back freedom of choice.”

Freedom of choice is a word the brand often uses when discussing recent decisions to emphasize internal combustion engines, such as the return of the HEMI V8 engine and the refresh of the gas-guzzling Ram SRT TRX truck.

In addition to big, powerful V8 engines, Filosa said he believes customers want pure hybrid cars, meaning they have hybrid batteries that are charged by the engine without the need for a plug. The company’s future strategy is to have a healthy mix of hybrids, extended range electric vehicles, EVs, and internal combustion engines (with a renewed focus on internal combustion engines).

“We listen to our consumers. We try to understand what they want in the future. We also know that hybrids are a big trend,” he said.

Brooklyn Beckham breaks silence about Nicola Peltz and parents

0

Brooklyn Peltz Beckham has broken her silence on rumors of family feud in a scathing social media post, claiming her famous parents tried to ruin her marriage to Nicola Peltz Beckham.

Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham, has broken his silence about his relationship with his parents.

“I don’t want to reconcile with my family,” the 26-year-old wrote in a series of lengthy Instagram Stories on Monday, January 19. “I have been silent for years and have made every effort to keep these matters private,” he continued, adding, “As my parents and their team continued to appear in front of the press, I had no choice but to speak with my own voice and tell the truth about only some of the lies that were reported.”

“I’m not being controlled. I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life,” Beckham added, alluding to speculation that he’s estranged from his family because of his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham.

“My parents have been constantly trying to break up my relationship since before our wedding, and they have not stopped,” Brooklyn said in a statement Monday.

USA TODAY has reached out to Victoria and David Beckham’s representatives for comment.

Brooklyn and Nicola married in 2022 and renewed their vows in August 2025. Brooklyn’s parents attended the wedding, but not the vow renewal.

Brooklyn Beckham breaks his silence about his wedding drama with wife Nicola and mother Victoria

Around the time of his wedding, reports surfaced that Brooklyn’s relationship with his soon-to-be wife and the groom’s mother was strained.

Now, Brooklyn has addressed this rumor. “Mum canceled the production of Nicola’s dress at the 11th hour, even though she was so looking forward to Nicola wearing her design, leaving Nicola scrambling to find a new dress,” he wrote.

Brooklyn, who also took Peltz’s name when she married him, said: “In the weeks before our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured and tried to bribe me to take away the rights to my name, which meant that I, my wife, and my future children would not be entitled to it.” My parents were adamant about signing it before my wedding, because then the contract would start. My resistance affected my payday, and they have never treated me the same way since then.

“While planning the wedding, my mother even called me a ‘bad person’. Nicola and I decided to invite our nanny, Sandra, and Nicola’s Nauni to the table, as neither of us had husbands,” he wrote. “Both of our parents had their own tables, adjacent to ours as well.”

Brooklyn Beckham says two brothers were ‘sent to attack me on social media’

Brooklyn also wrote that on the eve of his big day, his family told him that his soon-to-be-born wife was “not biological” and “not part of the family.”

From that moment on, he said, “I began to stand up for myself along with my family. I was subjected to constant attacks in public and private from my parents, which were sent to the press at their behest.” He added, “Even my brothers, Romeo and Cruz Beckham, were sent to attack me on social media and ended up blocking me out of nowhere this summer.”

In December, 20-year-old Cruz took to Instagram to clear the air about the Daily Mail report, claiming that her brother Brooklyn had been blocked by her parents.

The tabloid’s headline read: “David Beckham and Victoria Beckham have unfollowed their estranged son Brooklyn, 26, after it was revealed he will be spending Christmas with his wife Nicole Peltz’s billionaire parents amid family rift.”

But Cruz posted that that was “not true” and that Brooklyn was the one who blocked her parents, including her siblings.

Brooklyn Beckham says his mother ‘hijacked’ his first wedding dance with wife Nicola

Brooklyn also said on Instagram that Victoria “hijacked” her first dance with Nicola on their wedding day.

His first dance was “planned weeks in advance to a romantic love song,” he said, adding, “Marc Anthony called me up on stage in front of 500 wedding guests. The schedule was to have a romantic dance with my wife, but instead I waited for my mom to dance with me.”

“She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone,” he said. “I have never felt so uncomfortable and humiliated in my entire life.”

Therefore, “we wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that would bring joy and happiness, rather than anxiety and shame.”

Brooklyn says his wife Nicola has been ‘consistently looked down upon by her family’

Beckham’s eldest son said: “No matter how hard we try to be together, my wife has consistently been treated with contempt by the rest of the family.” “My mother has repeatedly invited women from my past into our lives in ways that were clearly intended to make us both uncomfortable.”

In recent months, Brooklyn has attended public events in Los Angeles and New York with his wife Nicola, but has not been seen with his family.

According to Getty Images, Brooklyn was last seen with his father and brother on February 25, 2024, during a soccer game between Inter Miami and Los Angeles Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Prior to that, on February 3, 2024, Nicola was spotted with her brother and mother Victoria attending the premiere of the movie Lola in Los Angeles, California.

Nicola appeared in a drama.

Brooklyn added that despite his family’s actions, he and his wife “traveled to London for my father’s birthday and waited in his hotel room for a week trying to plan some quality time with my father, only to be rejected for a week.”

“He rejected everything we tried, except for a big birthday party with 100 guests and cameras on every corner,” Brooklyn continued. “When he finally agreed to meet me, it was on the condition that he didn’t invite Nicola. It was a slap in the face. Then when my family traveled to LA, they refused to see me at all.”

Brooklyn Beckham slams David and Victoria Beckham for ‘controlled press coverage’

“Throughout my life, my parents have controlled the press about our family,” Brooklyn wrote, calling her parents’ social media posts and family events “performative,” and adding, “False relationships have been entrenched in my life.”

He concluded: “The story of my wife controlling me is completely backwards,” and he wrote that he “has been controlled by my parents most of my life.”

Since distancing herself from them, Brooklyn said, “For the first time in my life, that anxiety has gone away. Every morning I wake up and feel peace and relief, grateful for the life I’ve chosen.”

“My wife and I don’t want our lives to be shaped by images, press and manipulation,” he said. “All we want is peace, privacy and happiness for ourselves and our future families.”

Panera is jumping on the 2016 bandwagon and turning the clock back to simpler times, with the launch of Pokémon Go, the Mannequin Challenge, and, in the restaurant chain’s case, the launch of Bread Bowl.

Below is a sample of the players selected by experts within the USA TODAY Sports Network to win the College Football Playoff Championship Game.

  • Indiana 24, Miami 23: It’s farfetched to think that Indiana would have hired Curt Cignetti, who guided James Madison from FCS to FBS, in 2023 and gone 3-9. The Hoosiers, one of the worst Power 4 college football programs in history, pulled off one of the greatest upsets of modern times, whether they beat Miami for the national championship or not. It won’t be easy for Indiana. Miami plays its best football at the right times, has one of the most ferocious pass rushes in sports, and held Ole Miss’ high-powered offense to two touchdowns in the Fiesta Bowl. At the end of the day, I have faith in Indiana’s veteran players and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who is better than opposing quarterback Carson Beck. However, Ruben Bayne Jr. and Akheem Mesidor will make things tough for the projected No. 1 overall pick. Help the Hoosiers with a last-minute score. The result was an unprecedented title for the former Big Ten doormat turned future college football powerhouse. – Austin Cartwright, USA TODAY
  • Indiana 27, Miami 21: First, let me introduce a shocking sentence. Losing the national championship trophy to Indiana. Shocker, I know. But with a roster without a single five-star rookie, the Hoosiers look like the most all-around complete team this postseason, and will need a completely clean game (including no earned penalties) against Miami to pull off the upset. That’s not to say the Hurricanes will cause any trouble for the Hoosiers, though. I think they will. What I see this happening is the factors that got them to the championship game and that is dominating the line of scrimmage on both ends of the ball. Fernando Mendoza will close out the storybook in front of his hometown crowd in Miami with a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter and ride off into the sunset (aka the NFL). Please erect a Kurt Cignetti statue in Bloomington…if it hasn’t already started. – John Luzzi, USA TODAY
  • Indiana 37, Miami 24: Miami’s dignity and physicality will test the seemingly invincible Indiana. The Hurricanes’ pass rush will be key, as Fernando Mendoza has had a perfect performance with eight touchdowns and five completions in two CFP games. Please read it again. 8 touchdowns. 5 incomplete. Miami’s run game should be able to keep the Hoosiers offense off the field, but Indiana’s efficiency is less dependent on their need for the ball. I couldn’t choose Indiana to be part of the largest alumni base in the nation. After enduring years of ineptitude, faith has given way to hope and layers of scar tissue are beginning to heal. I predict Indiana to win every game. Yes, that includes the national championship. Is this reality? – Matt Greneske, USA TODAY
  • Miami 23, Indiana 20: Listen, I’m not going to make this one of those clean sweeps that could be shoved in our faces on social media if some huge underdog achieves amazing results. But in all seriousness, Miami faces a big challenge, but it’s not an insurmountable challenge. The Hoosiers were the best team in the country and looked that way all season, especially in their two playoff games, where they won by a combined score of 94-25. Still, the Hurricanes’ path to victory, narrow as it may be, exists. Miami is one of the few teams in the sport that can match Indiana’s excellence on both lines of scrimmage. It wasn’t always up to snuff on the slippery field in the Fiesta Bowl against Ole Miss, but they have one of the most ferocious pass rushes in the country with Ruben Bayne Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, a duo that could cause problems for Fernando Mendoza and the Hoosiers’ prolific passing attack. The Hurricanes’ offense has the potential to mount long, sustained drives that keep Mendoza off the field, as they have in their past two wins. There are countless other factors, matchups and scenarios that could lead to the Hoosiers completing their improbable journey to a national title. Indiana’s run defense, which is allowing fewer than three yards per carry this season, will very likely put Mark Fletcher Jr. in trouble. Carson Beck could revert to the worst version of himself and turn the ball over at will. Especially against a Hoosiers defense that put Oregon’s Dante Moore through hell. For all of Miami’s pass rush abilities, Mendoza is better equipped to handle it than anyone else. But it’s the last game of the year. I can’t hold anything back now. Especially when there’s a chance to cause an upset. – Craig Meyer, USA TODAY

What time does the national championship game start tonight? Indiana vs. Miami start time

The College Football Playoff championship game is scheduled for Monday, January 19th at 7:30 p.m.

Where will the 2026 National Championship Game be held?

The College Football Playoff Championship Game will be held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Who will play in the 2026 National Championship Game?

Here are the details of the teams that advanced to the CFP Championship Game:

  • 10th place Miami
  • 1st place Indiana

Miami has won five national championships in program history, including three in the Orange Bowl.

USA TODAY Sports’ ranking of the Hurricanes’ five national championships is as follows:

Curt Cignetti has a 26-2 record in two seasons as an Indiana football player. Meanwhile, he has already gotten two raises with the Hoosiers as he was linked to several programs during a successful 2025 season.

USA TODAY Network’s John Leuzzi breaks down how much Cignetti makes in Indiana in the article below.

In the CFP semifinals, Carson Beck beat Ole Miss on Miami’s final drive. Beck made a great throw and finished off a drive with a rushing touchdown to put the Hurricanes ahead late.

Beck transferred from Georgia to Miami this offseason and has become an integral part of the team’s success.

  • Carson Beck: 319 of 435 passes (73.3%), 3,581 yards, 29 touchdowns, 11 interceptions

Mark Fletcher was Miami’s mainstay during the CFP run. In three playoff games, Fletcher rushed 58 times for 395 yards and added two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Here are Fletcher’s stats during the 2025 season:

  • Mark Fletcher: 199 rushes, 1,080 yards, 10 touchdowns. 16 catches, 132 yards, 2 touchdowns

Fernando Mendoza is the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner. He’s on a mission to continue proving that by leading Indiana to the CFP playoffs. Mendoza had five passing touchdowns in the win over Oregon.

During the CFP, Mendoza completed 31 of 36 passes (86.1%) for 369 yards and eight touchdowns. With a win on Monday, Mendoza could become the first Heisman Trophy winner to win a national championship since 2020.

Mendonça’s stats during the 2025 season are:

  • Fernando Mendoza: He completed 257 of 352 passes (73%) for 3,349 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. 83 rushes, 284 yards, 6 touchdowns

No, Indiana football has never won a national championship. The Hoosiers have a chance to become the first team to win a national championship since Florida in 1996.

Indiana has made a remarkable comeback in two seasons under coach Curt Cinetti. In 27 seasons before Cininetti, the Hoosiers had a 113-204 record. However, under Cininetti, they have a record of 26 wins and 2 losses.

Ohio State won the 2025 national championship. The Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame 34-23 in last year’s title game, winning their first national title since 2014.

If Indiana can win tonight, it will be the third consecutive year a Big Ten team has won the national title. Michigan also won in 2024.

Greenland tensions push gold and silver prices near record highs

play

Precious metals prices hovered near all-time highs as the United States and Europe move toward escalating their smoldering trade war.

On the afternoon of January 19th, gold was trading near $4,676.70 per ounce, and silver had topped $94 per ounce.

On January 17, President Donald Trump announced new 10% tariffs on products from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, citing opposition to U.S. control of Greenland. In response, the leaders of these countries said the threat “risks damaging transatlantic relations and sending them into a dangerous downward spiral.”

U.S. stock and bond markets were closed Monday for a federal holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr., but stocks sold around the world.

Precious metals are often used as a hedge against global turmoil. These are considered potentially safer than assets such as corporate stocks that depend on a growing economy and exist independently of individual countries and central banks.

“Since Liberation Day, investors are looking to reduce the dominance of U.S. assets in their portfolios and support gold, precious metals and[emerging market]assets more broadly,” Goldman Sachs analysts said in a Jan. 19 analysis. “Emancipation Day” was the name of President Trump’s April 2025 tariff announcement that shocked financial markets.

Goldman analysts said the bank is “moderately risk-oriented” and added that commodities are a strong option for diversification against geopolitical tensions. “We prefer precious metals over energy. Markets are already pricing geopolitical risks more heavily into gold than oil.”

Bills player calls Sean McDermott’s firing ‘stupid’ in Instagram post

0

play

The Buffalo Bills announced on January 19 that they have fired Sean McDermott, who coached the team for nine seasons.

Buffalo’s decision didn’t sit well with one of its veteran defensemen, Jordan Phillips.

Phillips, a 33-year-old defensive tackle, took to his Instagram Story to express his displeasure with the team’s decision.

Phillips posted a caption above an image of a breaking news story about McDermott’s firing, writing, “The (expletive) here is so stupid.” “Honestly, it’s disgusting. He’s the best coach I’ve ever had.”

Phillips will know a thing or two about the coaching environment around the NFL. The 11-year veteran has bounced back since being selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, playing for five different NFL teams and six different full-time coaches.

Phillips had three two-season stints with the Bills and enjoyed his most productive NFL season (9.5 sack season in 2019) under the guidance of Coach McDermott.

Phillips was one of McDermott’s fans, but in a statement announcing the firing of the 51-year-old, Bills owner Terry Pegula said he believed the team needed a “new structure.”

“Sean has done an admirable job leading our football team over the past nine seasons,” the statement said. “But I feel like we need a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take this team to the next level. We owe it to our players and Bills Mafia.”

“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and helped the Bills become a perennial playoff team. I respect all the work, loyalty and attention to detail he has shown for this team and this community.”

Hedge funds make billions in the K-shaped economy

0

play

British hedge funds delivered $18.9 billion in profits for investors in 2025, marking the fund’s biggest annual dollar gain on record, even as worries about rising inequality plague the U.S. economy.

TCI Fund Management had $77 billion in its coffers as of last month and had a return of 27% last year, according to an annual study conducted by financial firm Edmond de Rothschild Group. For context, the overall S&P 500 index returned 16.4%.

While many investors piled money into superstar stocks that benefit from the AI revolution, TCI also made big bets on other industries. According to various media reports, the company’s two largest shareholders are General Electric Co. and Safran SA, both aerospace companies.

Economists and other experts who monitor financial markets are increasingly concerned about the widening gulf between the wealthiest Americans and the rest of the population. The so-called K-shaped economic trend has been largely driven by strong gains in stocks and other assets in recent years.

As USA TODAY reported in November, one analyst estimates that nearly 90% of households with incomes of $100,000 or more own stocks, compared to just 28% of households with incomes of less than $50,000.

It’s not just concerned about how it’s impacting inequality. It also suggests that if the stock market slumps, much of the spending that has been supporting the economy will recede.

Meanwhile, many low- and middle-income Americans are struggling to pay for things like rent and groceries. “We’re facing the challenge of wealthy people being the ones that are driving up the economy and supporting the inflation that comes with it, while everyone else is struggling,” Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG US, said in a November interview.

A Jan. 19 analysis by Thorsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo, showed that the bottom 40% of households by income earners are experiencing higher inflation than the top 20%. He showed that the prices of the things they spend the most on – rent, electricity, food, transportation and “other necessities” – are rising faster than discretionary goods.

But for now, many analysts at least expect the stock market to remain strong this year. In December, Deutsche Bank strategists said they expected the S&P 500 index to rise nearly 18%, while Morgan Stanley said they expected it to rise 14%.

President Donald Trump does not recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day

0

President Donald Trump has not acknowledged Martin Luther King Jr. Day through any public statements, proclamations, or activities. It’s a departure from his first term and his predecessors.

play

President Donald Trump has broken with the tradition of past presidents, including his own first term, to recognize January 19, 2026, as Martin Luther King Jr. Day through any public statement, proclamation, or activity.

The federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader’s anti-racism efforts falls on the third Monday in January.

Trump spent the day at his Mar-a-Lago residence. He is scheduled to play in the National College Football Championship in Miami tonight.

The White House did not immediately respond to a question on Jan. 19 asking if President Trump intended to recognize the day or recognize Dr. King’s accomplishments.

President Trump’s only social media post on the morning of January 19 called for voter ID requirements, a measure opposed by civil rights groups because racial minorities are less likely to have state-issued identification. After being contacted by USA TODAY, White House social media accounts posted about ICE and Trump’s accomplishments in his first year in office.

Congress established Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but only Congress can cancel its official observances. President Ronald Reagan signed the Royal Holiday Act on November 2, 1983, designating the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in honor of the civil rights leader.

President Trump is the first president to not issue a formal proclamation recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day since President Reagan made it a national holiday.

Most presidents, including Trump in his first term, also recognized the holiday through acts of service, memorial services, speeches and the laying of flowers at the King Memorial on the National Mall.

For example, in 2023, President Joe Biden gave a speech at Martin Luther King Jr.’s church. In 2008, then-President George W. Bush spoke at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC. In 2007, Bush volunteered for a day at a local high school.

President Trump’s return to the White House on January 20, 2025 was a historic coincidence as Inauguration Day coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Then-President Joe Biden signed the proclamation before leaving office.

President Trump has made rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion programs a key priority of his second administration.

Last year, the Pentagon suspended its observance of Black History Month, and this year the Trump administration removed Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth Day from the National Park Service’s free day lineup (and added Trump’s birthday instead).

Trump celebrated the holiday during his first term. Before his inauguration in 2017, Trump called on Americans to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and “celebrate all the great things that he represented” just before meeting Martin Luther King III at Trump Tower.

Although he signed an official declaration in 2018, he was criticized for not appearing in public.

President Trump subsequently signed the proclamation in 2019 and 2020, and on holidays he visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., and laid flowers. He also signed a declaration before retiring in 2021.

President Trump’s latest proclamation, signed on January 16, recognizes Religious Freedom Day. This is the third declaration he has signed since the beginning of the year.

It’s possible to see the aurora borealis “as far as Alabama” tonight.

0

play

Sure, we’re in the middle of winter…but for hardy skywatchers, tonight (January 19-20) could be a great night to spot the Northern Lights across vast swaths of the country.

The Space Weather Prediction Center says a magnetic storm expected to hit the Northern Hemisphere overnight will increase the chance of seeing aurora borealis “through much of the northern half of the country, and from Alabama south to Northern California.”

What is a geomagnetic storm?

Magnetic storms are the result of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are ejections of solar material and magnetic fields from the Sun. When a CME reaches Earth, it can create a magnetic storm. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, watches of this caliber are “extremely rare.”

Northern Lights Forecast: When can you see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are expected to be widely visible only in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 20th. Geomagnetic activity is expected to return to normal levels by Tuesday night.

G4 watch issued

On January 19, the Space Weather Prediction Center announced a G4 “severe” geomagnetic storm watch. This means that in addition to producing auroras, storms can affect power systems, spacecraft operations, and satellite and radio navigation.

“While some critical infrastructure technologies may be adversely affected, mitigation is possible,” the prediction center said.

The scale of geomagnetic storms ranges from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme).

How to take photos of the aurora borealis

The best way to take photos of the Northern Lights with your smartphone is to adjust the exposure time and enable night mode.

According to Travelfoss, to get the best images, you should calibrate your iPhone to let in more light. Night mode turns on automatically and the camera sensor stays open for 1-3 seconds depending on the light. To get the best images of the Northern Lights, you should adjust the settings to a maximum of 10 seconds (30 seconds if using a tripod).

If there is too much ambient light, Night mode can let in too much light and result in overexposed photos. To address this, Travelfoss says you may need to change your exposure adjustment settings.

Ford explores cheaper vehicles as President Trump pushes small car ideas

0

play

  • President Donald Trump has suggested that U.S. automakers produce smaller, cheaper cars similar to Japanese “kei cars.”
  • Ford leaders say vehicle affordability is a top priority and they expect to announce more news on this topic soon.
  • Stellantis’ CEO said the automaker aims to bring smaller and cheaper models to market.

Ford Motor Co. leaders have been talking about vehicle affordability for at least a year, and it was a topic that Executive Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley addressed at the Detroit Auto Show a year ago — and now the companies say Ford has made it a top priority and is developing a radically new approach to lowering vehicle prices, with the company saying it will announce news soon.

“Affordability is a big issue,” Bill Ford told the media on the sidelines of this year’s Detroit Auto Show on January 13. “It’s something that we’ve talked about a lot internally, and we actually have a lot of plans to address it…some that we haven’t announced yet, but we’ll be announcing soon because I think it’s really important.”

So did President Donald Trump, who on Dec. 3 in the Oval Office with executives from the Detroit Three suggested that automakers start considering building smaller, cheaper cars for the U.S. market similar to those popular in Japan. President Trump said he would make new cars more affordable for Americans.

Farley said these small cars are a topic that Trump won’t let go of. Farley recounted his interactions with the president during his visit to the Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn on January 13.

How the topic of small cars came about

On December 3, President Trump announced a proposal to ease emissions standards set by former President Joe Biden. He later withdrew the small car proposal as Farley, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa and General Motors Orion assembly plant manager John Urbanich stood by in defiance.

“When you go to Japan, which I just left, you go to South Korea, you go to Malaysia, you go to other countries, and they have very small cars like the Volkswagen Beetle used to be,” President Trump said. “It’s really small and really cute. So I said, ‘What’s going to happen in this country?’ Everyone seems to be thinking about good things.”

Auto industry analysts said Trump was referring to Japanese “kei” vehicles, which are manufactured by various Japanese automakers primarily for sale in Asia. Kei cars are a special class of vehicles. These are box-shaped vehicles designed specifically for that market, limited to a maximum engine size of 660 cubic centimeters and 64 horsepower. Top speed is typically 87 miles per hour.

And, well, they’re small. The maximum length for light vehicles is 133.9 inches and width 58.3 inches. To put that in perspective, the current Fiat 500e, built by Stellantis, is actually even larger, measuring 143.1 inches long and 74 inches wide.

As previously reported by the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY network, most industry experts said it’s been proven that American car buyers don’t want such small cars, even if they’re cheap. Case in point: Stellantis sold only 970 models of the Fiat 500e starting at about $32,000 throughout 2024. By comparison, Stellantis sold 587,725 Jeep vehicles and 439,039 Ram pickups in the U.S. in 2024. Ram prices start at $40,275.

But President Trump persisted, saying on Dec. 3, “This program really gives people a chance to get a car. They can get a brand new car instead of a not-so-nice car. So new car companies should start thinking about that.”

Reconsider this subject with a trip to Dearborn

Farley and Filosa nodded politely, and the light car idea hit the brakes on the other side of the Oval Office door.

But Trump is still pushing the idea. He brought this up to Ford executives on Jan. 13 during a factory tour of Rouge Center, where Ford builds full-size F-150 pickup trucks.

“The president asked me today, ‘Can we sell light vehicles here in the United States?'” Farley told the media on the sidelines of the Detroit Auto Show on the evening of January 13. “I think it’s exciting. It’s fun to talk about the possibilities.”

The reporter quickly followed up and asked Farley how he answered Trump’s question.

Mr. Farley paused and said: “I worked for the Scion brand and brought it into the country and loved that little car. But we’ll continue to look at the market. Affordability is a priority for us. But frankly, in the U.S., it’s a small minivan that seats six. I don’t know if it’s going to be expensive.”

Mr. Farley worked for Toyota from 1990 until 2007, when he joined Ford. At Toyota, he was responsible for launching and managing the new Scion brand.

everyone is talking about affordable cars

The affordability of new cars has been a hot topic of interest lately.

On January 15, during a “fireside chat” on the second day of the Detroit Auto Show, Sen. Bernie Moreno said, “I’d like to see more Honda Civics, cars that cost less than $25,000.”

Honda advertises the Civic starting at under $25,000. Moreno, a Republican from Ohio, where Honda has a large auto plant, has challenged the industry to bring more affordable small cars to market.

“Honda is doing that, and Toyota is close to that,” Moreno said. “Other people can also participate.”

Days later, federal officials including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer visited the 2026 Detroit Auto Show’s opening day to the public on January 17 to talk about changes in the industry.

Greer said there has been “significant progress toward affordability” due to regulatory reductions and a greater focus on auto manufacturing in the United States.

Duffy said the average age of vehicles on America’s roads is 13 years old, “too old.”

“If we have more affordable cars and more people can put new cars in their driveways, those cars will be safer,” Duffy said. “That’s what we want for American families, and that’s why this affordability push is so important.”

Detroit automakers seem to agree. Stellantis’ Filosa said on January 14 at the Detroit Auto Show that the automaker is aiming to bring smaller, cheaper models to market, including potential options under $30,000.

“I’m sure it’s less than $40,000, right?” Filosa said. “We’ll look at under $30,000 as well. Obviously, all kinds of vehicles are different: pickups, SUVs, cars. But yes, we’d like to go there as well.”

Filosa said the company will offer a combination of “price-competitive value propositions” as well as adjust its product lineup to offer more affordable pickups.

But back to Bill Ford, he told reporters on January 13 that Ford’s plans are a little different.

“You can play around with trim, but there’s a more radical version that’s affordable…because there’s a limit to what you can do with trim. We’ve done that many times in the past,” Ford said. “You can do that right now. Look at the F-series. We have the flexibility to go from entry level all the way up to the very expensive level.”

According to www.ford.com, the 2026 F-150 starts at $37,330 and comes in several trim options, bringing the F-150 Raptor’s price to $79,005.

Bill Ford said the trim mix offered by car companies is ultimately determined by the market and customers. That’s why Ford is considering another solution.

“I think this is a more fundamental version: Can you design a vehicle that is fundamentally lower cost? Then you can pass it on to your customers,” Bill Ford said. “That’s what we’re working on.”

stay tuned.

Read President Trump’s message to Norwegian leader complaining about Nobel Prize

play

On January 18, a text message exchange between President Donald Trump and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gare Stoer revealed that the hurt from being denied the Nobel Peace Prize remains as fresh as ever, three days after Trump accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Colina Machado.

Storr had been contacted a day earlier following President Trump’s threat to impose a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the United States from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland unless a “complete and complete purchase agreement for Greenland” is reached.

The message began, “Dear President, Dear Donald,” and appealed for a “de-escalation” of tensions and threats. It was signed “The Best – Alex and Jonas,” with Alex referring to Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Less than 30 minutes later, Trump, who calls himself the “President of Peace,” wrote that he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely about peace.”

Below is a text exchange shared with USA TODAY by the Norwegian Prime Minister’s Office.

Text message from Chancellor Store to President Trump, January 18, 3:48 p.m.

“Dear Mr. President, Dear Donald, Regarding our contacts across the Atlantic with Greenland, Gaza, and Ukraine, and yesterday’s tariff announcements. You know where we stand on these issues. But I believe that we should all try to defuse this and de-escalate tensions. There is a lot going on around us that requires us to come together. I suggest that you contact us by phone later today. Please let us know your tips, either together or separately. Best – Alex and Jonas»

Text message from President Trump to Chancellor Store on January 18th at 4:15 p.m.

«Dear Jonas: Given that your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing eight wars plus, I no longer feel obligated to think purely about peace (although peace always prevails, I can now think about what is good and appropriate for the United States of America). Denmark can’t protect the land from Russia or China, so why do they have “ownership” in the first place? There is no written documentation, all we know is that boats landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there too. I have done more for NATO than anyone else since its creation. And now NATO should do something for the United States. The world will not be safe unless we have full and complete control over Greenland. thank you! DJT President»

‘Bitter’ cold weather continues, forecasters warn of snowstorm later in the week

Mid-January has taken hold in much of the eastern half of the country, and this Martin Luther King Jr. Day lives up to its frigid reputation. AccuWeather says multiple rounds of cold arctic air will continue to affect parts of the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeastern states through midweek.

Even beyond that, the cold will continue. “The last 10 days of January will be brutally cold from the Midwest to the Great Lakes to the Northeast,” Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue told the X Show.

In addition to the cold, heavy lake-effect snow will bury areas near the Great Lakes under several feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

And looking ahead, this long-term pattern of cold air has long-term forecasters warning that major storms could develop later this week and into next weekend, bringing the risk of snow and ice across large swathes of the country.

Meanwhile, the western United States will continue to experience mild and mild weather this week. “This week, a sustained weather pattern will bring sunny, dry, and unusually warm conditions across much of the western United States and southwestern Canada, with spring-like temperatures, areas of fog, and limited storm activity,” AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in an online forecast.

Snow begins to fall due to the influence of the lake.

Lake-effect and lake-enhanced heavy snow continues downwind of the Great Lakes, potentially causing whiteout conditions and difficult travel conditions, the National Weather Service warned.

“As the snow falls, roads will be covered in snow and visibility will be limited,” the National Weather Service in Buffalo said in a statement. “Travel in areas with lake-effect snow can be very difficult or even impossible.”

Frigid gusty winds are expected to blow over the Great Lakes on January 19th and January 20th. “As a result, lake effect snowfall is expected downwind of the lake,” the weather bureau said. Generally, there will be about 8 to 12 inches of accumulation, with larger amounts possible on its own by Wednesday (January 21) morning. ”

Severe cold in the Midwest, freeze warning for the South

High temperatures in many parts of the Midwest on January 19 are expected to be in the single digits to below freezing, 20 to 30 degrees below average.

“Wind chills as low as -35 degrees can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” the National Weather Service in Minneapolis said.

In the South, temperatures were below average on the morning of January 19 as the weather remained sunny across the Southeast. Freeze warnings were issued from parts of southern Georgia to northern and central Florida due to low temperatures in the low to mid 30s.

Subzero temperatures are expected to return to much of Florida from the night of January 19 into the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 20, according to the National Weather Service. According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, and wind chill values will again drop into the 20s to 25s in most locations during the predawn and early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 20.

“There is a chance of frost in patchy areas, especially along I-95 and inland to the west,” the weather service said.

Florida snow delights residents

Residents of Florida’s Panhandle woke up on Sunday, January 18th to snow falling across the area.

As of 5:53 a.m., the National Weather Service announced that 0.09 inches of snow had fallen at Pensacola International Airport in six hours.

Despite the uncertain forecast, the joy of winter mornings hasn’t stopped for many, with social media showing many area residents setting alarm clocks for the early morning hours to experience the snowfall.

Most of the snow started falling around 4:45 a.m. Pacific time and tapered off a few hours later.

Snow in the South is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, AP reported. Less than a year later, on January 21, 2025, parts of Florida that saw briefly frosty lawns received up to 8 inches of snow, the heaviest snowfall in many places since the late 1800s, according to the Associated Press.

Will there be a big storm later this week?

AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said in an online forecast that a widespread storm is expected to gradually move from the Rocky Mountains into the Plains region and then move across the eastern United States starting Friday and into next weekend. “Given the presence of cold air across the region, winter effects could extend over a wide area of the storm’s path.”

“Where exactly this storm develops and its path will determine where the snow and ice will appear. Residents from Colorado and Wyoming to the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts are urged to stay alert to the latest forecasts, especially as ice threats become a possibility,” Glenny said.

warm west

Other parts of the West will also see above-average temperatures this week.

High temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees above average for mid-January in many areas, including Seattle, San Francisco and Salt Lake City, AccuWeather said. For reference, average daily high temperatures are in the low 40s in Seattle, low 50s in San Francisco, and low 30s in Salt Lake City.

Temperatures in some areas, such as Los Angeles, will be in the 70s, or 5 to 10 degrees above historical averages. In Phoenix, high temperatures will primarily be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees through midweek. In Las Vegas, high temperatures will range from the mid 60s to near 70 degrees.

Extending AI value beyond pilot purgatory

0

Scaling the value of AI from individual pilots to enterprise-wide implementation remains a key hurdle for many organizations.

Experimentation with generative models has become ubiquitous, but the industrialization of these tools (i.e., wrapping them in the necessary governance, security, and integration layers) often stalls. To address the gap between investment and operating returns, IBM has introduced a new service model designed to help companies build their in-house AI infrastructure, rather than purely building it.

Adopt asset-based consulting

Traditional consulting models typically rely on human labor to solve integration problems, a process that is often time-consuming and capital-intensive. IBM is one company trying to change this by offering asset-based consulting services. This approach combines standard advisory expertise with a catalog of pre-built software assets, aimed at helping clients build and manage their own AI platforms.

Instead of commissioning bespoke development for each workflow, organizations can leverage existing architecture to redesign processes and connect AI agents to legacy systems. This method helps enterprises achieve value by extending new agent applications without changing their existing core infrastructure, AI model, or preferred cloud provider.

Managing multicloud environments

A common concern for business leaders is vendor lock-in, especially when adopting proprietary platforms. IBM’s strategy recognizes the reality of heterogeneous enterprise IT environments. The service supports multi-vendor infrastructure compatible with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, alongside IBM watsonx.

This approach extends to the model itself, supporting both open source and closed source variants. The service addresses the adoption barrier of concerns about accumulating technical debt when switching ecosystems by allowing companies to build on current investments rather than requiring alternative strategies.

The technical backbone of the product is IBM Consulting Advantage, an internal delivery platform. IBM uses this system to support its work with more than 150 clients and reports that the platform has increased the productivity of its consultants by up to 50%. The premise is that if these tools can accelerate delivery to IBM’s own teams, they should be able to provide similar speed to clients.

This service provides access to a marketplace of industry-specific AI agents and applications. For business leaders, this suggests a “platform first” focus, shifting attention from managing individual models to managing an integrated ecosystem of digital and human workers.

Aggressively deploying a platform-centric approach to extend the value of AI

The effectiveness of such a platform-centric approach is best demonstrated through active adoption. Pearson, a global learning company, is currently using this service to build a custom platform. Its implementation combines human expertise and agent assistants to manage daily tasks and decision-making processes, demonstrating how the technology works in a real-world production environment.

Similarly, a manufacturing company adopted IBM’s solution to formalize its generative AI strategy. For this client, the focus was on identifying high-value use cases, testing targeted prototypes, and aligning leadership around a scalable strategy. The result is an AI assistant that uses multiple technologies within a secure and controlled environment, laying the foundation for widespread expansion across the enterprise.

Despite the attention to generative AI, realizing balance sheet impact is not guaranteed.

“Many organizations are investing in AI, but achieving true value at scale remains a huge challenge,” said Mohammad Ali, SVP and head of IBM Consulting. “We have solved many of these challenges within IBM by using AI to transform our own operations, deliver measurable results, and provide proven strategies to help our clients succeed.”

The conversation is gradually moving away from specific LLM features and toward the architecture needed to run LLM securely. Success in scaling AI and achieving value depends on organizations being able to integrate these solutions without creating new silos. Leaders should ensure that they maintain rigorous data lineage and governance standards when adopting pre-built agent workflows.

President Donald Trump pardoned James Philip Womack, the son of Congressman Steve Womack. White House officials cited family health issues.

President Donald Trump has pardoned the son of a Republican lawmaker who was jailed for distributing methamphetamine.

On Thursday, January 15, President Trump commuted the federal sentence of James Phillip Womack, the son of Arkansas Congressman Steve Womack, according to a formal presidential pardon signed by President Trump and issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.

White House officials told USA TODAY that in addition to James Womack’s record of good behavior in prison, his family has had some recent health issues, including his mother being diagnosed with abdominal cancer and his brother suffering from a seizure disorder that makes it difficult for him to live alone.

The lawmaker’s son was fined $1,900 and sentenced to eight years in prison in May 2024 in federal court for distributing more than 5 grams of methamphetamine, according to court records. He had been arrested multiple times on drug charges.

With this reduced sentence, Womack will still be required to serve five years of supervised release.

The congressman did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment. He thanked President Trump in a statement to Arkansas television stations KTHV and KNWA.

“I am grateful for President Trump’s generous and thoughtful actions. The commute allowed my son to be with his family during a very difficult time, and the president’s phone conversation with his wife and his care team left an impression I will cherish forever,” the congressman said in a statement.

Womack is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and a former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
