Are grocery stores ready for shoppers to stock up for the winter storm?

0

Did you go to the grocery store before this winter’s big storm and find the shelves empty? Or are you worried you’ll need staple food during the storm but can’t find it? And how quickly will the store be able to restock it?

Shoppers have been panic-buying this week in anticipation of forecasts that extreme cold and a major winter storm will hit more than half the country from January 23 and continue until January 26, with potential continued impact. News reports and social media posts show empty grocery shelves across the country.

USA TODAY spoke to grocery and food experts to find out how stores are responding to this deluge of demand, how retailers are working to restock shelves with more products, and how long shoppers may have to wait.

Don’t Panic – Buy Your Groceries

First, avoid panic buying, known in the industry as “pantry loading,” said Doug Baker, vice president of industry relations and supply chain at FMI, which represents the food and grocery industry. FMI members include retailers that sell food products and companies that manufacture food products.

That doesn’t help neighbors or other area residents who are also trying to buy needed groceries, Baker said.

But that’s not the case with consumer sentiment, said Neil Saunders, a retail analyst at research and analysis firm GlobalData.

“As we’ve seen with the pandemic, panic breeds more panic buying,” he said.

David Ortega, a food economist and professor at Michigan State University, said it’s important to make sure you have basic staples and foods that can last for several days, but “there’s no need to panic buy or buy more than you need, because that can overwhelm the system and cause supply chain problems.”

Can my store restock empty shelves?

Ortega said many retailers are preparing because the storm has been brewing for several days.

But Ortega said weather and road conditions for trucks transporting groceries to stores will have a big impact on whether retailers can keep shelves stocked.

“In a (storm) system this large, once road conditions start to deteriorate, it’s very difficult for stores to stay ahead of the curve. Even well-prepared retailers can only restock as long as their trucks can drive,” Ortega said. “If deliveries are disrupted in multiple states, some shelves may remain empty until the situation improves.”

Baker said retailers have learned a lot during the pandemic and improved their supply chains.

Baker said grocery stores are trying to keep up with demand. He said retailers began seeing shoppers clearing shelves as early as Monday and Tuesday of this week in preparation for the weekend storm.

Baker said shoppers who can’t or don’t want to leave their homes can also order groceries for delivery online.

How are stores preparing for a surge in demand?

Sanders said most grocery retailers use professional weather forecasts to predict demand and adjust inventory levels accordingly. But forecasts change regularly, so they’re not foolproof, he says.

“The problem arises when there is a huge spike in demand over a short period of time. Most retailers don’t have the capacity to accommodate that in terms of warehouse space, trucks, etc., so they can quickly run out of goods,” he said.

Ortega said retailers also start preparing as soon as a major storm is about to occur. That includes increasing orders for fast-moving essentials, adjusting staffing levels and reallocating inventory away from slower-moving categories, he said.

Sanders said stores can quickly restock within days, but “the problem is that if there’s bad weather, retailers are shut down and restocking becomes more difficult.”

If retailers are restocking their shelves, when is the best time to go to the store?

Retailers can get groceries delivered throughout the day, but Baker said the best times to deliver perishables are early morning and mid-morning. He told me to go after my first coffee to give him time to stock the store.

However, Sanders and Ortega said the situation could be different. Other stores may be restocked overnight, during the night, or early in the morning.

It’s also a good idea to ask store employees when shelves will be restocked, said Kathryn Black, a partner at Kearney, a global management consulting firm who leads food, drug and mass merchandise retail.

What are the most common things people panic buy or should buy?

Baker said milk, eggs, bread, toilet paper and water are among the most common items people buy before a storm.

But many shoppers forget that power outages are a possibility, he said. Baker said shoppers may also want to include items on their grocery list that don’t require electricity, stoves or microwaves to prepare or store, such as canned proteins such as tuna or chicken.

Sanders said non-perishable, high-energy foods such as nuts and chocolate are also commonly purchased.

Ortega added that people also tend to buy items such as ready-to-eat meals, snacks, flashlights, propane, ice melt and salt, and firewood.

Also, remember to have batteries for portable devices and plenty of food for your pets, Baker said.

Black said it’s a good idea for families with babies to have enough diapers, formula and wipes on hand, along with snacks and baking supplies, to keep families busy when it snows and they get bored.

What should I do if the shelves are empty?

When consumers find an empty shelf, they can get creative, Black said. “Check different aisles in the store for the same item or substitutes. For example, check bottled water in the fitness aisle instead of the beverage aisle,” she says.

Or, instead of using bottled water, “get really creative with DIY. Fill your bathtub with water so you can flush the toilet when the water runs out,” says Black.

If bread is out of stock, try crackers or bagels.

Black said consumers who picked up the habit of baking bread during the coronavirus pandemic may want to get back to that habit instead of buying bread.

What is “Mar-a-Lago Face”? Taught me the beauty of growing old

0

We’re so used to seeing our favorite actors and actresses after work that it’s a “shock” to see their real, aged faces.

Aging is difficult. Understood.

When you are young, it is almost impossible to imagine that what happened to your parents and grandparents will someday happen to you.

Now that I’m approaching 40 and 50, I sometimes look in the mirror and wonder who’s looking back at me.

Where did the time go? Apparently in my face.

With Botox and fillers everywhere (not to mention plastic surgery) and celebrities and politicians clearly getting involved, I sympathize with the urge to get involved. Do you have those annoying wrinkles around your eyes or forehead? There is a possibility that it will disappear!

But so far I’ve resisted doing anything like that. And I think there’s a good case to make aging normal again.

The Trump administration and the “face of Mar-a-Lago”

Given the legacy media’s disdain for everything President Donald Trump touches, I initially rolled my eyes when I saw a headline about the “face of Mar-a-Lago,” a particular aesthetic adopted by many around President Trump.

A dermatologist described the look to USA TODAY as “characterized by plump lips, high cheekbones, bright white teeth, a strong jawline, and minimal facial movement with well-defined eyebrows.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is often cited as a symbol of this style. Some plastic surgeons are also reportedly receiving requests for similar modifications.

Now, acting like this look is something only MAGA believers want is very disingenuous. The Hollywood left is constantly changing its shape. More on that later. And there’s no question that Democrats are just as committed to Botox treatments as Republicans.

Although the media scrutiny of President Trump’s affiliates has been very one-sided, I couldn’t help but agree with some of the criticism.

Take Noem, for example. Even at 54 years old, she is still a very attractive woman. However, she has clearly put in a lot of effort to change her appearance.

I think she looked better when she was the governor of South Dakota, before she turned into a Border Patrol Barbie doll.

Outside the White House, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ new wife Lauren Sanchez, 56, has undergone an even more surprising transformation. Unfortunately, there are some things that money cannot buy.

Celebs like Claire Danes and Kate Winslet embrace aging

Return to Hollywood.

We’re so used to seeing our favorite actors and actresses after work that it’s a “shock” to see their real, aged faces.

Last fall, the internet was buzzing about Claire Danes and her amazing performance in Netflix’s The Beast In Me.

However, much of the conversation was not focused on her acting skills.

It was on her face.

A 46-year-old Danish guy like me has a very expressive face and lines from having lived on this earth for over 40 years.

Apparently some viewers were taken aback by this.

Opinion warning: Get columns from your favorite columnists and expert analysis on key issues delivered straight to your device through the USA TODAY app. If you don’t have the app, download it for free from the app store.

To Dane’s credit, she’s embracing aging the old-fashioned way. The same goes for Kate Winslet, who turned 50 and spoke about the pressure women in Hollywood are under to maintain appearances and turn back the clock.

“To look like a normal person, to have a moving face, to have wrinkles that I hope my 50 years have shown me…that’s very important, because I want to lead by example,” Winslet recently told Evie magazine. “I want young women to look at my body and look at my face and think, “Oh, this is normal.”

Now, Danes and Winslet are both beautiful women. they are movie stars. And I think they try hard to stay healthy and have strict skin care routines.

I’ll try it too. But as deflated as the wrinkles on my face are, they are also a map of my life, my joys and my sorrows. I worked hard for them.

Aging is normal and no one can go against time. Stop pretending you can do it.

What’s in the viral “Japanese cheesecake” that’s taken over your feed?

0

play

The new no-bake dessert that’s all the rage includes a barely-there cheesecake.

Dubbed “Japanese Cheesecake,” this pastry has taken over the feeds and “your pages” of gourmets everywhere in recent weeks. Especially since it tastes like cheesecake and is “high in protein.”

One user joked on January 22: “I’ve seen more people eating the famous Japanese cheesecake than my own family.”

It is promoted as a “healthy” alternative to cheesecake, a high-calorie dessert, and is made with a biscuit cookie and yogurt-like base.

The exact origins of the recipe are not immediately clear, but the Icelandic Food Center says some liken “Japanese cheesecake” to “Skailka” or “Skailterta,” an Icelandic dessert usually made with skyr, biscuits, and a few other ingredients.

Ever since the “hack” (recipe) gained traction online, many people have made it their mission to either recreate “Japanese Cheesecake” exactly or completely customize it by adding or removing certain ingredients.

One user said the Japanese cheesecake craze was “worth a try.” “What does it mean when you add Biscoff cookies to Greek yogurt, it tastes like cheesecake?? What kind of magic is this…super delicious,” a user reported in a Jan. 19 X post.

We’d like to introduce you to what we know about the newly popular “Japanese cheesecake”, including how to make it.

Some are fully adopted, others less so.

Like most food trends, “Japanese cheesecake” is not without its critics. While some people fully hopped on the “Japanese cheesecake” train and bought the ingredients to make it at home, others just didn’t see the vision.

“Imagine eating a ‘Japanese’ cheesecake. It’s just yogurt and biscuits,” one user said in a Jan. 22 X post.

Others came to a similar conclusion, with one writing: “63% are convinced that the much-talked-about ‘Japanese Biscoff yogurt alternative to cheesecake’ is a conspiracy between Big Yogurt Big Biscoff and Big Pharma to skyrocket diabetes rates.”

Tyler Woodward made a similar point in a Jan. 23 post on X, saying, “On TikTok, he put a Biscoff cookie inside the Nobake Cheesecake filling and called it Japanese.”

Concerns have been raised about nutritional value, including the use of Philadelphia’s No-Bake Original Cheesecake Filling in place of yogurt and the addition of other high-calorie ingredients. On the other hand, there are people who are curious to see if it lives up to the hype, write reviews, or are “dying” to try it out.

How to make the popular “Japanese cheesecake”

The popular “Japanese Cheesecake” is easy to make and only requires a few key ingredients.

  • Some type of biscuit cookie, i.e. lotus biscoff cookies, graham crackers, etc.
  • Ingredients similar to “filling” like Greek yogurt, Skyle, and Philadelphia’s “No-Bake Original Cheesecake Filling”
  • Customize your “cheesecake” with other toppings and ingredients you have on hand

According to a video clip reviewed by USA TODAY, all you need to do to assemble the dessert is sandwich as many cookies as possible between your favorite “fillings.” Then let the concoction marinate in the refrigerator for several hours.

Toppings, or additional ingredients such as berries or protein powder, can be added before or after refrigerating the dessert, depending on which method works best for your recipe.

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5 and allows players to choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose easy pick/quick pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered 1-70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase your non-jackpot prize by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Where can I buy lottery tickets?

Mega Millions tickets can be purchased directly at gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

Josh Shapiro’s memoir says he has backed out of Harris’ vice presidential search, hints at 2028

0

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he was offended by questions Kamala Harris’ team asked about her support for Israel during the selection of her running mate.

play

WASHINGTON – Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he went through the process of choosing former Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate before settling on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, deciding he wasn’t right for the role.

The revelation is contained in Shapiro’s memoir, a copy of which USA TODAY obtained. The book, “Where We Keep the Light: Stories From a Life of Service,” which mixes anecdotes about politics and his Jewish faith, will be released on January 27th.

Mr. Shapiro, who is up for re-election this fall, revealed new details about his conversations with Mr. Harris, who at one point considered challenging for the nomination, as well as former President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump.

Shapiro, who was Biden’s top surrogate before he resigned, has also hinted at his future political plans.

The would-be 2028 Democratic presidential nominee has announced himself as willing to “go against the grain” and “say the quiet parts loud,” even if those positions are unpopular. Shapiro says he was always willing to make a choice and follow through.

Shapiro, 52, said he was willing to pay “if there was a political price,” but added, “The truth is, most of the time I was able to get people where I was, or at least get them more in my direction.”

The collapse of the Biden camp

Mr. Shapiro’s book offers contrasts and counterarguments to Ms. Harris’ own campaign memoir, “107 Days,” published in 2025. Harris wrote about the “recklessness” of Biden’s top aides, including herself, in refusing to tell the president he should not seek re-election.

Shapiro said Biden administration officials had been gossiping about Biden behind his back for months before he withdrew from the race.

Shapiro said that at a White House state dinner he attended in April 2024, Biden aides asked him about the situation on the ground in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state. Shapiro said he gave them an honest assessment: Biden is depressed and falling.

Mr. Biden’s abysmal debate in June only underscored that point. Shapiro said by then he was “starting to have serious doubts about how Biden would win,” but he didn’t think any politician would jump over the sitting vice president to accept his party’s nomination.

When the president and his wife visited Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the capital, Shapiro joined them for coffee. Biden asked how things were going in Pennsylvania. “There are a lot of people who think it’s best for him to withdraw from the race,” Shapiro told Biden, adding that he shared internal polling to make his point. Mr. Biden rejected it.

The conversation was respectful and cordial, he said. Biden is a “good man” and “a man of honor.”

It’s not the ‘right time’ for Shapiro

When Biden finally resigned, Shapiro said he asked himself: “Well, what do we do? Maybe there’s a process where the party works to replace Mr. Biden? Did I want to be a part of that?”

His wife, Lori, did not approve of his participation in the race.

“I don’t think we’re ready to do this,” she said. “This is not the right time for our family, and it is not on our terms.”

Shapiro said he was still considering it, but ultimately agreed with his wife. Shortly thereafter, Harris called him for assistance.

As a moderate governor in a swing state, Mr. Shapiro’s name quickly rose to the top of Ms. Harris’ list of running mates. Her campaign manager called on her behalf to see if he was interested in coming under scrutiny.

Lori was just as worried as him. “I knew that although it was an honor, for some reason it didn’t feel right,” Shapiro wrote.

Harris’ lawyers focused on their differences in policy areas. Harris said his team pressed him to support law enforcement. He said he communicated that bipartisan appeal was a big reason he was elected.

“They questioned my ideology, my approach, my worldview,” he said. “Again, it was their right to do so. But the way they conducted it showed that they didn’t really understand where the people who were deciding this presidential election actually were.”

Harris team asks if Shapiro is an Israeli agent‘

In one of the subsequent sessions, Harris’ team focused on Israel, he says. They took issue with his aggressive response to pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Pennsylvania and worried about how his stance would affect Michigan, a battleground state with a large Arab-American population.

“I wondered if these questions were being asked just to me, the only Jew running for office, or if everyone who doesn’t hold federal office is similarly accused of Israel,” he said.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who is Jewish, was also considered. He has said little about what happened when he was tested. Shapiro volunteered at an Israeli military base in high school and worked at the Israeli Embassy in Washington early in his career.

Shapiro said their questions increased his sense that he didn’t deserve the ticket. Members of the team suggested withdrawing from the process before meeting with Mr. Harris. His wife encouraged him to talk to the vice president and told him he would regret it if he didn’t, he said.

On the way to see Harris in Washington, he says her team asked him if he had ever “been an agent of the Israeli government” or had any contact with secret Israeli agents.

Shapiro was surprised and angry. “If they were working undercover, I said, how would we know?”

While waiting for Harris at the Naval Observatory, Shapiro said he made small talk with one of the staff members. Harris writes in her book that she was measuring curtains and counting the number of bedrooms. Shapiro said his comments were misrepresented. He was trying to determine whether his children would be comfortable calling the house their home.

When he finally spoke to Harris, she told him that if he was selected, she would expect his full focus. Shapiro said he told her he intended to do his best, but that he still needed to run the state. Harris was asked if she would apologize for her previous comments about protesters. He told her he didn’t mean to do that.

At the time, she told him that she had had a difficult time as vice president and listed several complaints about Biden’s senior staff and their closed decision-making process, which she plans to detail in her book. “I was surprised that she seemed to dislike the role so much,” he said.

Mr. Shapiro expressed his own expectations for the job. He wanted to partner with Harris and know that she would take his opinions seriously.

“She was very clear that that wasn’t what she was looking for. I was going to work primarily with her staff. She couldn’t tell me that I would have that kind of access.”

To Harris’ credit, she was honest, he wrote. After the meeting, they made him wait at former Attorney General Eric Holder’s apartment in Washington. Eventually, Dana Remus, one of the vice president’s lawyers, showed up and said she understood that Shapiro didn’t want the job. Moving to Washington would be difficult for him, and the role would be a financial burden. His wife would get a new wardrobe and pay for professional hair and makeup. Couples must also pay for meals and entertainment.

“I was a little bit slack-jawed. The comments were unkind to me. They were unkind to Lori,” he said.

Shapiro said he went home, weighed his options with his wife, and decided he didn’t want the job. He called Remus and told him he was leaving. He wanted to tell Harris personally.

“She then told me that the VP wouldn’t handle bad news well and I shouldn’t force her. At that point, I left it to the VP’s team to inform her of my decision.”

Two days later, Harris called to say he had officially chosen Walz. “She could not have been more kind,” Shapiro wrote.

Mr. Shapiro did not know whether Mr. Remus had informed Mr. Harris of his withdrawal, but said Mr. Harris did not ask.

Harris later wrote in his memoirs that Shapiro was “poised, sophisticated, and personable,” but he seemed reluctant to take command.

People familiar with the process told USA TODAY at the time that Mr. Shapiro tried to negotiate the policy portfolio himself. It was clear from his probing interviews that it was going to be a bad match, they said. His perceived ambitions, strong ties to Jewish identity, and how that influenced his views on Israel were also prominent issues in the race to be Harris’ running mate.

obama factor

Mr. Shapiro’s faith was appealing to another prominent Democrat who ran for president nearly two decades ago.

He was one of Pennsylvania’s earliest supporters of Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential primary, when the former Illinois congressman pulled off an upset over Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Shapiro defended Mr. Obama during the primary campaign after Mr. Obama’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, made anti-Israel and anti-Semitic remarks. Mr. Shapiro appeared on Mr. Obama’s behalf at synagogues and community events and convened listening sessions with prominent Jewish leaders.

“Personally, I was fielding a high volume of calls from donors who were concerned about the president’s support for Israel,” Shapiro said. “But I felt comfortable defending his beliefs. I thought the attacks were unfair. I believed in his message, and I thought he would be a better president.”

Mr. Shapiro’s rhetorical style has been compared to Mr. Obama, and Mr. Shapiro has admitted in the past to be a fan of Mr. Obama.

Obama campaigned for Shapiro when he ran for governor in 2022, and attended a rally with Shapiro, Biden, future Sen. John Fetterman and others just before the election.

Mr. Shapiro spoke earlier than Mr. Obama at the event, a position he acknowledged was intimidating. Shapiro said the former president came backstage after he spoke and “gave me a little hug.”

“‘Hi,’ he said in my ear,” Shapiro writes of Obama. “‘I was listening to your speech. It was very good. It meant something.’

“This moment still sticks with me,” Shapiro continues. “I also keep a photo of us hugging in my office.”

Living “in a bubble”

On Passover in 2025, Shapiro and his family were sleeping on the second floor when a Molotov cocktail came through the window of the Governor’s Mansion. For the first time, Shapiro realized that people were trying to kill him.

It took Trump a week to make the call after the arson attack. When President Trump finally called from his personal cell phone, Shapiro didn’t answer because he didn’t recognize the number. President Trump left a voicemail asking her to call him anytime. “It’s just a terrible situation,” President Trump said.

Shapiro called him back. Mr. Trump responded immediately. He said he raised several issues important to the state during the call, including jobs for steel workers in Pittsburgh.

He said Trump brought up the 2028 presidential election and the Democratic bench. “He said he liked the way I talked to people and dealt with problems.”

Trump, who nearly suffered an assassination attempt in July 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania, also said, “I don’t want to be president because of how dangerous it has become to be in office,” he said.

Why has the Alex Honnold Skyscraper Live Netflix event been postponed?

Alex Honnold’s planned climb to the top of Taipei 101, which was scheduled to be documented in a live Netflix event broadcast in the United States on Friday night, has been postponed due to weather, Netflix announced.

Climbing and broadcasting has been enhanced around the clock and is currently scheduled to begin on Saturday night, January 24th at 8pm ET. “Safety remains our top priority and we appreciate your understanding,” Netflix said in a statement.

Honnold, 40, made history in 2017 when he became the first person to “free solo” ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. His quest and harrowing climb, made using only his arms, legs and hand choke, was chronicled in the 2018 film Free Solo.

Currently, he is trying to liberate Taipei 101 alone. Taipei 101 was once the tallest building in the world and still stands at 1,667 feet tall. After a 24-hour delay, his quest is scheduled to depart on Sunday in Taiwan (Saturday night in the United States).

How a cold case podcast led to murder charges

0

Arrest in the murder of Donna Arsenault in Franklinton, Louisiana spotlights the power of true crime podcasts to hamstring police.

play

When Donna Arsenault’s naked body was found in a small Louisiana town in 2017, the local sheriff’s office quickly announced to the public that it was a suicide, even though a coroner’s report ruled it a homicide.

More than eight years after the 40-year-old mother of three was shot and killed, the town’s new sheriff is crediting a podcast by a member of Arsonow’s family for helping uncover the truth in the cold case and secure an arrest.

Freeze Frame, an eight-episode podcast released in 2024, takes an in-depth look at Arsonow’s life, the suspect in her murder, and why the case was solved. It’s just the latest example of how ordinary people, including Internet detectives, students in college criminology classes, and a former reality TV producer turned podcaster, can crack dormant cases in a big way.

“If it wasn’t for the podcast, we wouldn’t even know about this case,” Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith told USA TODAY. “When I saw the podcast and got interested and started watching it, I thought, ‘This can be solved. This is possible.'”

Last month, exactly one year after the last episode of the podcast aired, the sheriff’s office arrested Arsenault’s ex-boyfriend Scott Jordan. A grand jury indicted him on January 14 on charges of second-degree murder.

He maintains his innocence and vehemently maintains his innocence.

As Jordan and Alsoo’s family awaits his trial, USA TODAY looks at what happened to Alsoo, why the case was clearly mishandled, and how the podcast “Freeze Frame” changed everything.

What happened to Donna Arsenault?

On October 24, 2017, Scott Jordan and Arceneaux’s spiritual advisor called police that they found Donna Arceneaux dead in her home in Franklinton, a town of fewer than 4,000 people about 110 miles north of New Orleans.

When police responded, they found Arsenault naked on the floor next to his bed with a gunshot wound to the chest and a gun on the other side of the bed, former sheriff’s investigator Demi Rice said on the Freeze Frame podcast. Rice said there was evidence that someone had wiped up blood in the bathroom and that there was “minimal” blood in the bed area.

“There’s no way she would get out of bed, go to the bathroom, bleed out, put a bullet through the heart and clean up afterward,” Rice said on the podcast.

Sheriff Smith told USA TODAY that any reasonable investigator would reach the same conclusion: “This was clearly a homicide.”

But on February 7, 2018, five years before Smith was elected, the Sheriff’s Office told the public that was not the case. Ella Reeder of Franklinton reported, citing the sheriff’s office, “The latest autopsy results indicate a suicide, and it has been officially ruled a suicide.”

A coroner’s verdict of “homicide” indicates that someone’s death was caused by someone else. It does not necessarily mean murder, but it does rule out suicide.

“It was nothing short of murder,” Smith said.

Podcaster reveals autopsy report, pressures investigators

One of the biggest revelations on the Freeze Frame podcast was the coroner’s preliminary report that ruled Arsenault’s death a homicide. The report was dated three months before the sheriff’s office announced to the public that it was a suicide.

That’s exactly the kind of breakthrough Tucker Simmons, 33, was hoping for when he started working on a podcast about his Aunt Donna’s death.

“I called the coroner’s office and said, ‘We’re just confirming that this is real, it’s not in any way ruled a suicide,'” Simmons told USA TODAY this week. “He said, ‘Well, I was angry when it was reported as a suicide, because it was never ruled out as a suicide.’ And because of politics and small towns, it kind of faded away.”

Simmons began working on podcasts after becoming burnt out developing and producing reality shows in Los Angeles. When she moved to Nashville in 2020 and began working on “Freeze Frame,” Simmons said she knew she had to look directly at the authorities and renew attention to the case.

So Simmons spent about $1,000 erecting a provocative sign across the street from the sheriff’s office that read “A Murderer Among Us” and the coroner’s finding: “Official Verdict: Murder.”

Simmons said she spent several years interviewing dozens of people and spending six figures of her life savings to create a podcast that includes interviews with investigators, the former sheriff who was in charge at the time, and Arsenault’s family.

The podcast portrays Jordan as Arceneaux’s increasingly controlling and intermittently abusive boyfriend, at one point imposing three pages of rules on her to follow, including social media passwords and location sharing.

Simmons said the podcast leading up to Jordan’s arrest was “shockingly emotional.”

“This has been five years in the making,” Simmons said. “It’s weird to say I’m excited because Donna isn’t here yet, but that was the whole plan: to get law enforcement to do something about it.”

Who is Scott Jordan?

Scott Jordan is a 59-year-old radiology technician who was born and raised in the Franklinton area and has worked at the same local hospital for 35 years, his attorney Roy Burns told USA TODAY this week.

The podcast describes how Arceneaux became romantically involved with her after he moved in next door to her, and how he bought her house when she fell into financial difficulties. Their relationship deteriorated after that, and Ms Arsenault said she was trying to run away from Jordan and told others that he had a “stain” on him, the podcast said.

Jordan’s attorney, Roy Burns, told USA TODAY that his client categorically denies any involvement in Arsenault’s death and plans to vigorously fight the charges.

“This is a very defensible case,” Burns said. “This is just a circumstantial case.”

Sheriff Smith confirmed there was “no new evidence” leading to Jordan’s arrest. He said Scott’s investigators built the case by eliminating all other possible theories and suspects and reviewing previous interviews with the sheriff’s office, citing inconsistencies in Scott’s statements.

He declined to discuss a motive or share all the evidence they have, but said investigators are in close contact with prosecutors about what they need to prove to build a strong case.

Barnes successfully argued during a hearing this week to have Jordan’s bail reduced from $2 million to $500,000. Burns said Jordan was able to post bail and was released after several weeks in prison on the condition that he wear an ankle monitor and stay home unless going to work, his lawyer’s office or church.

He said there is a simple explanation for the accusation that Jourdan became controlling over Arceneaux, citing her history of infidelity with her partners, which he said the podcast fully investigated and acknowledged.

“He’s not happy about being arrested and having to hire a lawyer to defend him,” Burns said. “But he’s going to follow through. … He didn’t do that.”

Donna Arsenault’s sister solving case: ‘I’m starting to lose hope’

More than eight years after her sister’s death, Shelley Piggott told USA TODAY she feels relieved that the case is being handled by investigators dedicated to solving crimes.

When the incident first happened, she said, the sadness and pain increased even more when the sheriff’s office told the public that Arsenault’s death was a suicide.

“It hurt a lot,” she said. “We just couldn’t understand. ‘What is going on? Why is it being covered up like this? I started to lose hope.’

The sheriff in charge at the time, Randy Seale, did not respond to messages from USA TODAY. He told Simmons on the podcast that some investigators think it was a murder and others think it was a suicide, and that his way of managing people is to “let the people who know what they’re doing do their jobs and get out of the way.”

Mr. Seale told Mr. Simmons that he did not know why the public records were not amended to reflect that Mr. Arceneaux’s death had been ruled a homicide, but said his office was working hard on a “puzzling case.”

“I never stayed in power for 30 years with a dark heart,” Seal said. “Maybe the police response wasn’t good enough, maybe there was some kind of mistake, I don’t know. But I don’t think it was done intentionally.”

For Piggott, she said she regained hope that her sister’s murder would be solved when Simmons began working on the podcast and received a call from Sheriff Smith telling her investigators were re-examining the case.

“That’s all we wanted from the beginning: for someone to take a serious look at this case and treat Donna as a human being.”

Studless tire prices for 2026 are as follows:

0

Not everyone needs snow tires, but if you regularly need to drive in icy winter conditions, they can be a good investment.

play

  • The price of studless tires varies widely depending on your vehicle and the specific set you need.
  • Snow tires are made of a flexible compound and have more grooves for better traction on snow, slush, and ice.

Winter is here and 2026 is expected to bring a lot of snow. The worst winter storm of the season could be on the way, according to weather forecasts. Up to 18 inches or more of snow could accumulate in some areas.

Despite the severe weather, millions of motorists may still have to get to work, school, and other daily tasks during and after a major snowstorm. Fortunately, there are many snow tires that provide extra traction for winter driving.

Snow tires aren’t always necessary, but they can make a big difference for drivers who live in areas that are regularly hit by severe winter storms. How much will Americans have to pay for snow tires in 2026?

How much do studless tires cost?

The price of studless tires varies widely depending on several factors. According to AAA, low-end tires can cost anywhere from $200 to $600, while high-performance tires or premium brands can cost as much as $2,000 per set.

This may seem expensive, but “approximately 24% of weather-related accidents occur on snowy or icy roads,” says AAA. In slippery driving conditions, maintaining traction is paramount.

How are snow tires different from regular tires?

While the average tire is designed to provide traction on paved roads at moderate temperatures, snow tires are specifically manufactured to maintain traction with treads that account for snow, slush, and even ice. Snow tires have more sipes (grooves or grooves that provide grip) than the average tire. They also often feature stud holes for lightweight metal studs to increase traction on snowy and icy surfaces.

The rubber compound in all-season tires can become stiff in cold weather, but the compound in snow tires remains flexible at low temperatures. Popular snow tires include the Michelin X-Ice Snow, Bridgestone Blizzak WS90, and Continental Viking Contact 7/8.

Who should buy snow tires in 2026?

Snow tires are ideal for drivers who live in areas where it snows regularly. Additionally, it’s worth considering if your winter commute involves unplowed roads, steep hills, and potentially harsh driving conditions.

Although you can purchase one snow tire, a set of four performs best, so each tire on your vehicle has the same tread depth and style. Additionally, you can receive a discount if you purchase a set of 4.

Many auto service centers offer loyalty incentives that can make your total purchase and future services more affordable. Many tire shopping sites allow you to search for your specific vehicle and see a variety of snow tire options and customer reviews.

What happens to studless tires after the season ends?

Drivers can replace the snow tires with the original tires themselves after the season ends using a jack, stands, and appropriate tools to remove and tighten lug nuts. It is dangerous to jack up your car by yourself, so if you are not confident in changing the tire safely, we recommend that you use an auto service center or dealer.

The service center can install and balance the original tires after the season. Although more expensive than a DIY replacement, professional mechanics often have a lift for your safety and can perform additional checks on your vehicle and tires.

Who is Ryan Wedding? How a former Olympic athlete became a drug lord

Ryan Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder and alleged cocaine kingpin whom FBI Director Kash Patel compared to Pablo Escobar, was arrested on Friday, January 23, after an “extensive” international investigation. He was wanted on multiple murder and money laundering charges introduced over the past two years in connection with drug trafficking into the United States.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the wedding will be flown to the United States and “will stand trial there.” FBI officials said at a news conference Friday announcing Wedding’s arrest at Southern California’s Ontario International Airport that the 44-year-old is expected to remain in custody over the weekend pending his first court appearance Monday morning.

Law enforcement has been searching for Mr. Wedding for years due to suspected ties to Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel, but his dark turn from world-class Olympic athlete to notorious fugitive to drug trafficker appears to have happened long ago.

“He went from being an Olympic snowboarder to being the biggest drug trafficker of our time,” Patel said at a press conference.

Here, we detail Wedding’s transformation from Olympic snowboarder to international drug trafficker, including the federal charges that led to his eventual arrest on January 23rd.

What crime will Ryan Wedding be charged with?

Wedding, along with 15 co-conspirators, was charged in a superseding indictment filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in October 2024 with eight felonies for “running and participating in a cross-border drug trafficking operation that transported hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico and Southern California to Canada and other locations in the United States, and whose leaders orchestrated multiple murders in furtherance of these drug crimes.”

Wedding was formally charged with two counts of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, one count of conspiracy to export cocaine, one count of leading a continuing criminal enterprise, three counts of murder in connection with a continuing criminal enterprise and drug offenses, and one count of attempted murder in connection with a continuing criminal enterprise and drug offenses.

Wedding was also charged in the original indictment with running a continuing criminal enterprise, murder, and conspiracy to possess, distribute, and export cocaine.

The Trump administration then unsealed another wedding-related indictment in November 2025, charging him with nine more criminal acts related to witness intimidation, money laundering, and murder. Bondi said at the time that Wedding was Canada’s largest cocaine distributor, importing 60 tons of cocaine into the United States from Mexico each year and generating annual profits of $1 billion.

According to the Department of Justice, Wedding and a co-conspirator are specifically charged with orchestrating the drug-related murders of two families in Ontario, Canada, on November 20, 2023, and ordering the murder of another victim over a drug debt in Canada on May 18, 2024. Wedding’s most recent indictment includes an allegation that he ordered the murder of an employee in Colombia in January 2025.

Akil Davis, deputy director of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, said Friday that “Ryan Wedding has caused suffering to so many people and so many families, and it will never be the same.”

Ryan’s Wedding FBI Most Wanted

Wedding was added to the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted Fugitives” list in March 2025. Initially, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement had offered a $10 million reward for information leading to Wedding’s arrest and/or conviction. It was later increased to $15 million in November by the U.S. Department of State.

Where was Ryan Wedding arrested?

Patel announced Friday that Wedding was arrested on Thursday night, January 22, in Mexico City. Citing the need to “maximize operational security,” he declined to provide details about how Wedding was arrested or whether anyone received the $15 million reward.

Los Angeles was considered by law enforcement authorities to be the center of Wedding’s drug distribution network. But Mr. Wedding was for years believed to be hiding out in Mexico under the protection of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which is believed to be connected to his drug-trafficking operations. A previous Justice Department indictment identified him as a Canadian citizen living in Mexico.

In a social media post announcing Wedding’s arrest on January 23, Bondi thanked U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ron Johnson and Mexican authorities for their assistance in the case. She also noted that Mr. Wedding was flown to the United States to face criminal charges.

Ryan Wedding’s motorcycle seized

On December 29, 2025, the FBI announced that Mexican authorities executed multiple search warrants and seized dozens of motorcycles valued at more than $40 million that were believed to belong to Wedding. Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Civil Protection said the items included 62 “luxury” motorcycles, two vehicles, artwork, two Olympic medals and drugs.

Has Ryan Wedding been arrested before?

yes.

Wedding was arrested in June 2008 on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. An affidavit in the case detailed how Wedding and his associates traveled from Canada to San Diego as part of a Vancouver-based drug trafficking organization, according to CNN. However, the drug deal was a sting operation, and FBI agents arrested Wedding and two others, and investigators found $100,000 in cash in the hotel room.

Wedding was convicted in November 2009 and sentenced to four years in prison in 2010, CNN reported. He was released in December 2011.

Ryan Wedding, Olympic snowboarder

Wedding, a native of Thunder Bay, Ont., first competed as a member of Canada’s national snowboarding team in 1997 and spent the next five years competing in events around the world, culminating in a 2002 Olympic appearance in Salt Lake City. Wedding finished 24th in the snowboard parallel giant slalom at the Winter Olympics, and his competitive career ended shortly thereafter.

According to Rolling Stone, Wedding has since enrolled at Simon Fraser University and moved to Vancouver. The newspaper also reported that Wedding took a job as a bouncer at a Vancouver club during that time and was eventually drawn into the world of drug organizations, where he became a major.

Amazon warns customers of possible delays due to winter storm

Amazon is warning customers that deliveries may take longer than expected as a major winter storm began just before the weekend.

The e-tailer shared an in-app message for customers who have scheduled deliveries in the next few days.

“Due to the winter storm, some deliveries may take longer than usual,” Amazon wrote in the message.

The National Weather Service predicted on January 23 that heavy snow and “breaking ice” would hit much of the United States, including more than 170 million Americans from the southern Rockies and Plains to the Northeast. The Bureau of Meteorology has announced that the Northeast will also see heavy snow and ice by Sunday, January 25th.

Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the NWS Weather Prediction Center, said in a video shared online on Jan. 22 that a winter storm watch is in effect from Arizona to parts of New England.

How long do Amazon packages usually take?

USA TODAY reached out to Amazon on Jan. 23 for more information about how the storm would affect shipping, but did not receive a response. However, the company previously said on its website that shipping and delivery dates are calculated by adding shipping time and transit time.

“Delivery times vary depending on delivery speed,” the company wrote. “We use business days, excluding weekends, and take holidays into account when calculating delivery times. An exception to this delivery schedule is if a weekend delivery option is available at checkout.”

For Prime members, Amazon offers one-day delivery, same-day delivery within two days, Standard (4-5 business days), and Amazon Day delivery, where customers choose a specific day of the week to have all items delivered.

Common reasons for delivery delays include bad weather, heavy traffic, high demand for deliveries during holidays, delays at customs for international packages, and operational issues such as vehicle breakdowns, Amazon said.

USA TODAY also contacted Target, Walmart and Sam’s Club about possible delivery delays, but did not receive a response.

Which areas will suffer the most damage during the storm?

Calling the snow, sleet and freezing rain a “high-impact and widespread winter storm,” the NWS said people from the southern Rockies to New England will be significantly impacted by the storm from Friday, Jan. 23 through Monday, Jan. 26.

By early next week, frigid air will make travel during the week less than ideal for large parts of the United States.

Large ice accumulations are expected in the Carolinas and northern Georgia, as well as areas of eastern Texas through Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The NWS said 8 to 12 inches of snow could fall in areas including Oklahoma City, Louisville, Washington, D.C., and as far north as Portland, Maine.

“Wide-spread freezing rain and sleet is expected south of the first snow axis, impacting the Southern Plains, lower Mississippi River basin, Southeast, and portions of the mid-Atlantic region,” the service wrote.

More than half an inch of freezing rain could reach parts of northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, Mississippi and the southern Appalachians.

The National Park Service has removed an exhibit commemorating the enslaved people who lived and worked in George Washington’s original home in the city, just steps from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.

The sign’s removal on Jan. 22 was confirmed by the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior, which told USA TODAY in a statement that the removal is related to a March 2025 executive order signed by President Donald Trump titled “Restore Truth and Sanity to American History.”

“The President has directed federal agencies to review interpretive materials to ensure accuracy, integrity, and consistency with our nation’s shared values,” the statement said. “After completing the necessary reviews, the National Park Service is currently taking steps to remove or modify the interpretive materials in accordance with the order.”

Philadelphia Mayor Sherrell Parker’s administration filed the lawsuit based on a 2006 agreement between the federal government and the city that requires advance notice of any changes to park grounds, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The lawsuit names Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Park Service Acting Director Jessica Bowron, calling the exhibit’s removal illegal and “arbitrary and capricious.”

“There is only one federal facility in the country where the history of enslaved Black people is documented,” Michael Cord, a lawyer and activist who fought for recognition for the nine people held at his Washington home, told USA TODAY on January 22.

City Council member calls removal of exhibits an ‘effort to cover up’

In a statement published in X on January 22, Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson called the removal unacceptable and said he supports the city of Philadelphia’s lawsuit.

“Removing exhibits is an effort to whitewash American history. You can’t erase history just because it’s offensive. Removing items from the Executive Mansion only changes the landscape, not the historical record,” Johnson said.

Trump administration prepares for major winter storm

0

play

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration said it is coordinating with states and taking other steps to prepare for a major winter storm expected to bring snow, ice and frigid temperatures from Texas to Maine.

White House officials said on Friday, January 23, that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the storm throughout the day and was in close contact with administration officials.

The White House said the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs is in direct contact with officials in more than a dozen states expected to be affected by the storm to ensure they are prepared for the storm. Those states are Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. The White House also held telephone talks with power transmission companies.

“The Trump Administration is actively supporting states in the path of Winter Storm Fern, ensuring a swift and well-coordinated response,” White House press secretary Liz Houston said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Snowfall totals could exceed 12 inches in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, causing travel disruption, according to the National Weather Service. Dangerous ice accumulations from freezing rain and sleet are expected in several states.

How the Trump administration responds to the storm will be under the microscope after a layoff effort spearheaded by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has seen hundreds of thousands of federal workers laid off across all departments in 2025.

In his first public statement on the storm, President Trump used the dire predictions to counter scientists who have warned of climate change. “Record cold weather is expected to hit 40 states. Something like this has rarely happened before. Can you please explain to the environmentalists — what happened to global warming?” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said she spoke with governors and emergency managers from states in the storm’s path. He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other federal agencies are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with state officials.

“Governors remain in charge and we stand ready to help,” Noem wrote in a post on X. “Every American in the path of this storm should be prepared and take steps to protect themselves from the elements.”

FEMA said it had pre-positioned supplies such as meals, generators and shutter drivers at a distribution center at Camp Minden, Louisiana. Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Forth Worth, Texas. And Atlanta.

The agency said more than 20 FEMA personnel are distributed across state emergency operations centers, three incident management support teams have been deployed and 28 urban search and rescue teams are on standby. FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center and Regional Response Centers are activated.

Energy Secretary calls for availability of backup power generation

President Trump, who returned to Washington on January 22 after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is expected to stay in Washington through the weekend and not go to his Mar-a-Lago resort home in Florida.

In a Jan. 22 letter, Energy Secretary Chris Wright asked the nation’s electric grid operators to prepare backup generation resources for data centers and other facilities in the event of a power outage.

“We expect reliability coordinators and balancing authorities to work closely with facilities in their service areas to intentionally prioritize the dispatch order of backup generation to provide the greatest benefit to the large power system while balancing mission-critical functions,” Wright wrote.

For predictions, the National Weather Service collects storm data from aircraft operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Air Force. The White House said the plane was flying over both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.

“We are committed to this because we need to get the data into the models,” NWS Director Ken Graham told Axios.

The Department of Agriculture directed farmers, ranchers, families, and small businesses in the path of the storm to seek assistance available through the Department’s Disaster Resource Center and Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool.

The Small Business Administration said it has placed damage assessment and field deployment teams on “travel alert” in preparation for rapid deployment to affected states. The White House said the agency’s Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience is also in contact with state and federal officials to discuss which areas may be most affected.

The Federal Highway Administration, part of the Department of Transportation, said it stands ready to coordinate with states regarding road closures, salt needs and other resources during the storm.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which oversees commercial trucking, has declared a local state of emergency for the 40 states affected by the storm, providing temporary reduced business hours and relief efforts.

Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding DJ talks candidly about Victoria Beckham’s dancing

Brooklyn Beckham previously claimed his mother Victoria Beckham “hijacked” his first wedding dance with wife Nicola Peltz Beckham.

play

Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham’s wedding dance became a flashpoint in their estrangement with the Beckham family. And now the couple’s wedding DJ is sharing his side of the story.

DJ Fat Tony, who performed at Beckham and Nicola Peltz Beckham’s 2022 wedding in Brooklyn, appeared on British daytime talk show This Morning on Friday, January 23, and got candid about the family drama and Brooklyn Beckham and his mother Victoria Beckham’s wedding dance.

“It’s a sad situation,” Fat Tony said. “People say, ‘Oh, you think they’ll talk?’ Of course they will someday. They’re family. But the noise needs to die down. People need to step back from it. We live in a world where everyone is judge, jury and executioner.”

Following years of rumors of family discord between Beckham’s eldest son, his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham, and his parents, Brooklyn Beckham took to social media earlier this week to raise several abuse allegations against Victoria and David Beckham, saying that their parents were “constantly trying to ruin my relationship even before our wedding.”

Among the various complaints Brooklyn Beckham shared in a series of scathing Instagram Stories on January 19 was an incident allegedly related to his dancing with Victoria Beckham at a wedding.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz Beckham’s first dance had been “planned for weeks to a romantic love song”, but the dance was unexpectedly “hijacked” when Latin singer Marc Anthony, who was performing at the ceremony, announced that Brooklyn and Victoria Beckham would be dancing together instead.

Brooklyn Beckham criticized his mother’s dancing as “highly inappropriate”, adding: “I have never felt so uncomfortable and humiliated in my life.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz Beckham, Victoria Beckham and David Beckham for comment.

Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding DJ says Victoria Beckham’s dance made Nicola Peltz Beckham cry

DJ Fat Tony spoke about dancing at Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding to his mother Victoria Beckham during an appearance on This Morning.

According to Fat Tony, Marc Anthony threw Victoria Beckham a curve ball when he invited Brooklyn Beckham on stage and asked her to dance with him.

“Everyone is expecting Nicola to dance first,” Fat Tony explained. “Marc Anthony asks ‘the most beautiful woman in the room’ to come on stage. And he says, ‘Victoria, please come on stage.'”

Regarding the dance itself, Fat Tony said the timing of the dance was “inappropriate” more than Victoria Beckham’s style of dancing. “There were no black PVC catsuits, no Spice Girl action,” he added.

However, the DJ noted that Brooklyn seemed “devastated” by the change in the wedding dance, and Nicola Peltz Beckham left the room “with tears in her eyes.”

“Brooklyn was stuck on stage, and then she did this dance and Marc Anthony said, ‘Put your hands on your hips, mom,'” Fat Tony recalled. “The whole situation was really awkward for everyone in the room.”

Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding DJ talks about Victoria Beckham’s dance aftermath

Fat Tony, who also performed at brunch the day after the wedding, said Brooklyn and Victoria Beckham’s dance immediately became a hot topic among attendees.

“Everyone was talking about it and how sad that part (of the wedding) was,” Fat Tony recalled. “But I think we read too much into it in the sense that Victoria was thrown into that situation and too many stories were added to it. The dancing was just one part of a bigger problem.”

DJ acknowledged that the Beckhams are a “very dancing, close-knit family,” but it’s Brooklyn’s take on the incident that ultimately matters.

“This is all about Brooklyn’s feelings,” Fat Tony said. “If he felt it was inappropriate and awkward, then it was inappropriate and awkward.”

Is it okay to order food delivery?

0

play

Americans are rushing to grocery stores to stock up on essentials as more than half of the country braces for a major winter storm. With temperatures expected to drop over the weekend, people may be tempted to use food delivery services instead of braving the cold.

But experts say ordering food delivery during inclement weather poses difficult ethical dilemmas.

Brad Fulton, associate professor of business and social policy at Indiana University Bloomington, said it involves “competing values” such as “worker safety, worker economic security, and consumer needs.”

It’s normal to want convenience during storms, but some consumers forget to consider the safety of their delivery drivers. However, some workers rely on food delivery as their only source of income, which can be threatened by missed deliveries or fewer orders during bad weather.

So, if you’re having trouble ordering after the snow falls, here’s what to do and what you can do instead.

If you choose delivery, please leave a generous tip

This conversation doesn’t just highlight ethical dilemmas; Fulton said it also reveals “the fragility of our economic system.”

“In dangerous situations, workers must choose between income and safety,” he explains.

If you’re ordering food during a snowstorm, Fulton recommends leaving a generous tip.

Additionally, food delivery companies may offer bonuses to drivers for deliveries during inclement weather to offset the additional burden, he says.

Avoid panic buying and stock up on essentials

If you try to plan ahead, you may end up panic buying. This is not a new phenomenon, but it can be an annoying one, especially for people trying to shop for regular grocery carts.

Photos, news reports and social media posts showed empty grocery shelves across the country following forecasts of extreme cold and heavy snow. It’s not just cans of soup and batteries that shoppers are stocking up on, but fresh produce and regular groceries as well.

And while the storm is predicted to be severe, experts say it’s not realistic for people to stock up on toilet paper at local stores. It’s fear and maybe a little bit of peer pressure as well.

When it comes to food, the National Weather Service recommends stocking up on additional food and water, including non-perishable foods like granola bars, nuts and dried fruit, and infant essentials like formula.

You can also plan to order or pick up food before the storm, or reheat leftovers if you’re stuck indoors during or after a snowfall. Meal prepping can also help you resist the urge to order delivery during inclement weather and stop ethical dilemmas (to some extent).

Hyundai’s least popular SUV sold only 5 units in 2025

Nexo does not run on gas or electricity.

play

  • The Hyundai Nex is the brand’s slowest selling model, with only five units expected to be sold in 2025.
  • Other fuel cell vehicles, such as the Toyota Mirai, have also suffered significant sales declines.

South Korean automaker Hyundai produces competitive vehicles in several popular segments. Many of the company’s vehicles are in demand, but sales of one model have been particularly slow.

While there are several factors that could account for the failure of Hyundai’s least popular model, there is one thing that sets it apart from every other model in the brand’s portfolio. How did Hyundai manage to sell only 5 Nexo units in 2025 and just under 100 in the past two years?

According to sales figures, Hyundai Nex is the brand’s worst-selling car.

Hyundai has officially announced its 2025 sales numbers, and its best-selling nameplates like Elantra, Tucson, and Santa Fe have increased in popularity year-over-year. The company sold 148,200 Elantras, 234,230 Tucson SUVs and 142,404 Santa Fe SUVs. Sales of the Nexo SUV are another story.

The Hyundai Nex is unique because it is one of the few fuel cell electric vehicles on the American market. Additionally, according to Kelley Blue Book, it will be sold exclusively in California, just like the Toyota Mirai. The brand sold 94 Nexo models in 2024, although its status as a one-state nameplate has contributed to weak sales. Limited availability isn’t the only reason drivers aren’t interested in hydrogen gas-powered vehicles, as sales are down 95% year-on-year.

Why are Hyundai NEXO’s sales slow?

The Hyundai Nexo isn’t very appealing to drivers in California (or most states in the U.S.) due to the lack of widespread hydrogen gas stations. Aside from the lack of hydrogen stations, Nexo’s midsize SUV is particularly expensive, starting at about $63,000 for the base model. In contrast, the last trim of the popular Hyundai Santa Fe midsize SUV, the Calligraphy, starts at $47,600. It’s been in production longer than the Nexo, runs on regular gasoline like most popular cars, and is packed with great standard features.

Between the Nexo’s unpopular fuel source, high starting price, and its novelty, many American drivers are unwilling to take the risk on such an innovative vehicle. Additionally, Hyundai offers popular battery electric vehicles with more charging options than FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) like the Nexo.

Is America ready for hydrogen cars?

According to the car news site Carbuzz, Toyota’s Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle sales in 2025 will be just 210 units, down 57.8% from 499 units in 2024. California may have better refueling infrastructure for hydrogen gas vehicles than other states, but sales numbers do not show strong demand for hydrogen gas vehicles.

Electric vehicle sales will take a hit in 2025 due to the repeal of federal electric vehicle tax incentives and rising new vehicle prices. Even if EVs (which have better charging infrastructure than FCEVS) are struggling, it’s highly unlikely that Nexo will suddenly become popular. The outlook for FCEVs is bleak, as millions of Americans are still deciding whether EVs have a place in the auto industry based on sales numbers.

Hybrid cars are becoming the new normal

Drivers may not be ready for hydrogen gas cars, but hybrid cars are selling like hotcakes. According to Toyota, the Camry Hybrid had its “best year ever” in 2025. Ford achieved record hybrid sales in the U.S. in 2025, selling 228,072 hybrids and plug-in hybrids, an increase of 21.7% from the previous year.

Some of America’s most popular car brands offer hybrid nameplates and hybrid powertrain options on their best-selling models. Long gone are the days when models like the Prius were widely seen as strange, drab, and boring. The era of hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs is in full swing.

California announces Trump administration has taken over two oil pipelines

(This story has been updated to add new information.)

California is challenging an agency under the Department of Transportation for giving a company the “green light” to resume pumping oil through a pipeline, but officials insist the federal government gave the green light.

Against the backdrop of the waves at Dockweiler State Beach, Attorney General Rob Bonta said Friday, Jan. 23, that the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration had illegally given Sable Offshore the “green light” to resume pumping oil through two onshore pipelines that run from Santa Barbara County to Kern County.

In a petition for review filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Attorney General argued that PHMSA had issued an order assuming federal jurisdiction over the pair of pipelines.

Although these pipelines are located only within California, they have been reclassified as “interstates,” Bonta said. He described the move as legally federalizing the pipeline and “taking away state control.”

“This pipeline has been regulated as an interstate pipeline for decades under both Republican and Democratic administrations,” a PHMSA spokesperson said in an email to USA TODAY Network. “The Las Flores pipeline was only redesignated stateside in 2016 when it was taken out of service. Based on the facts presented by Sable in a letter to us last November, PHMSA agreed with the operator that it was appropriate to return the pipeline to our jurisdiction.”

The move comes after the Trump administration began unveiling plans to restart oil operations off the coast of California, a move that quickly raised concerns from advocates who warned it could harm the environment through oil spills and other impacts.

“PHMSA’s approval of Sable’s reopening of this potentially dangerous pipeline is the latest example of President Trump at the mercy of the oil industry,” Bonta said.

Bonta said one of the pipelines had previously ruptured, causing the Refugio oil spill along the state’s coast in 2015.

Houston-based Sable said on its website that restarting both the Santa Ynez unit and the Las Flores pipeline system, the latter of which is the subject of Bonta’s Jan. 23 legal challenge, “will bring significant energy and economic opportunities” to the state. More specifically, it will bring energy to “states with some of the highest gas prices in the country,” a PHMSA spokesperson said.

Last November, the Interior Department announced plans to end the Biden administration-era “restrictive” 2024-2029 National Outer Shelf Oil and Gas Lease Program. At the time, the Interior Department described the project as “the lowest oil and gas lease sales in history.”

The Home Office said the new proposal includes “as many as 34 potential offshore lease sales” offshore, including in the Pacific Ocean.

The environmental nonprofit Surfrider Foundation voiced its opposition to the news.

“The Surfrider Foundation urges the federal government to implement a five-year offshore oil and gas program with no new lease sales,” the foundation said in November. “Such actions will not only protect our precious marine and coastal ecosystems, but also the communities and businesses that depend on these resources.”

How to get free tax software to file your 2025 federal return

  • Free File is not Direct File, which the IRS is eliminating for the 2026 tax season.
  • This tax season, eight private partners are offering guided tax software products through IRS Free File, according to the IRS.

The IRS Free File program is up and running for the 2026 tax season. Taxpayers can use the system even before the Internal Revenue Service officially accepts tax returns starting January 26th.

Eligible individuals won’t have to pay a penny for tax software offered through this program by choosing one of eight tax software companies that have agreed to provide free software to people in their situation through IRS.gov/freefile.

Free File is not Direct File, which the IRS is eliminating for the 2026 tax season. Direct File was a pilot program and was not available nationally. It will begin offering in 12 states in 2024, and expanded to 25 states last year. The U.S. Treasury has announced that Direct File will end in November 2025.

The Direct File program had a special feature that made filing your taxes easier because it allowed you to pre-populate your return with tax information that the IRS already had on file, such as information from your W-2 form. You can’t do that with free files.

Direct File now allows eligible taxpayers to file relatively simple returns directly to the IRS online, including salary income from work reported on a W-2, Social Security income, pension and annuity income, and more. The system guided taxpayers through a step-by-step process of preparing their federal tax return by answering a series of questions.

Given that the end of Direct File made headlines, some taxpayers may mistakenly believe that there is no way to prepare a 2025 federal income tax return online for free on IRS.gov.

But do-it-yourself taxpayers looking to save money shouldn’t miss the Free File program, which began in 2003 and continues in 2025 for taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less.

Filing season begins on Monday, January 26, but with IRS Free File software, taxpayers can prepare and file their returns now and have them on file for e-filing once the season officially begins.

The IRS Free File program began accepting individual tax returns on January 9th for eligible taxpayers. Taxpayers who prepare their own taxes, regardless of income, will be able to use the IRS’s free file entry form starting January 26.

Not everyone can use Free File, but far more people are eligible for the program than are actually using Free File. The service is touted as a way to help 70% of U.S. taxpayers prepare and e-file their federal tax returns.

But of the 161 million individual income tax returns filed in fiscal year 2024, only 3.1 million, or about 1.93%, were filed using FreeFile, according to IRS data.

As an interesting comparison, according to IRS data, approximately 10.8 million personal returns were filed on paper in fiscal year 2024, and 141,000 returns were filed using Direct File, which was available in 12 states at the time.

Free File is one of the underutilized freebies that benefits do-it-yourself tax preparers.

This tax season, eight private partners are offering guided tax software products through IRS Free File, according to the IRS. A long list of details is available at IRS.gov/freefile.

To access the Free File site, you must go directly from the IRS website.

The IRS notes that the term “free” means eligible taxpayers can prepare and electronically file their federal tax returns for free using tax preparation software provided by members of an organization called the Free File Alliance.

If you’re looking for free software here, you need to understand that many people won’t be able to use any of the eight programs currently offered. In some cases, you may be able to work with as many as three providers.

Each tax software partner sets its own requirements for who can use the free software on its platform. Your provider may have age or income restrictions.

The IRS site has some very simple questions that guide you to software companies that offer free services based on your income, age, state of residence, and other factors.

Alternatively, you can refer to the list of requirements listed by each provider on the IRS site.

For example, OLT.com’s Online Taxes serves people with an AGI cap of $51,000, unless they are active duty military and have an AGI of $89,000 or less.

TaxSlayer has an age limit of 67 years or younger and an AGI of $19,000 to $89,000. If you are an active military member with an AGI of $89,000 or less, the age requirement does not apply. TaxSlayer processes returns for those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, and there are no age restrictions for tax preparers using the Free File system.

Again, you want to see the offers directly on IRS.gov to avoid being directed to programs that appear to be free online but aren’t.

Certainly, the Free File program has its limits when you look at the limits imposed by individual partners. TaxAct has an age limit of 20 to 60 to use the Free File program unless you are an active military member.

Some partners offer free state tax return preparation and filing. Some, like ezTaxReturn, don’t.

The list of participants is getting smaller every year. For example, in 2014, the IRS listed 14 tax software companies participating in Free File. H&R Block and Intuit left the Free File Alliance several years ago.

Part of this impact comes after a number of controversies and criticisms, including allegations of deceptive practices by some participants in steering consumers to other programs that are paid instead of free.

For the 2026 tax season, the IRS is listing the following partners on Free File. Drake (1040.com); ezTaxReturn.com (offers English and Spanish); FileYourTaxes.com; Online Taxes; Tax Law; TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA); and Tax Slayer. The program had the same eight partners in 2025.

Current year tax returns can only be filed using IRS Free File. You cannot use this system to process returns from previous years.

Of course, filing early in the season will help you get your tax refund sooner.

But there are some new deductions for the 2026 tax season, including a tax break for tips and another tax break for overtime pay, which could make tax preparation much more complicated for those who qualify for these tax breaks.

In some cases, especially regarding tip income and overtime pay, it may be better to wait to file until IRS guidance is released further into the tax season, said Tom Oseven, registered agent and director of tax content and government relations at the National Association of Tax Professionals.

After all, do-it-yourself enthusiasts looking for a deal want to be sure they’ve done it right.

White House appears to have doctored photos of lawyers arrested during church protests

The Trump administration shared on social media an apparently digitally altered photo of one of the people arrested in connection with recent protests at a church in Minnesota.

The image, posted on January 22 to the White House’s official account

Less than an hour later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s X account posted a nearly identical photo of Armstrong, but with her mouth closed, no tears on her face, and a much calmer expression.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed on social media that Armstrong was in the custody of federal agents. In addition to Armstrong, Bondi announced the arrest of two other people for their involvement in a Jan. 18 protest that disrupted Sunday services at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On January 22nd, White House Deputy Director of Communications Kaylan Dole appeared to admit that the photo had been altered in a post on X’s official account.

“To those who feel the need to reflexively defend the perpetrators of heinous crimes in our country, I say it again: Law enforcement continues. Memes continue,” Doe wrote.

The White House did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for additional comment.

Who is Nekima Levi Armstrong?

Mr. Armstrong, 49, is an American civil rights lawyer based in Minneapolis and St. Louis. pole area. She is a former president of the Minneapolis NAACP and ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Minneapolis in 2017, according to her website.

Who was arrested during the St. Paul’s Church protest?

In addition to Armstrong, authorities also arrested Chauntill Louisa Allen, a member of the St. Paul Public Schools Board. Anti-ICE activist and military veteran William Kelly was also arrested, Bondi said.

Noem said the three people arrested were charged with conspiracy to deprive people of rights in connection with the demonstration at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, saying they helped organize the protests.

On Sunday, January 18, a group of protesters entered the church and claimed to be the Rev. David Easterwood, the acting director of ICE’s St. Paul field office. The protest was held less than two weeks after Renee Good, a 37-year-old American woman, was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis on January 7th.

The arrests came after the Justice Department announced it was investigating the protests for possible violations of the FACE Act, which protects access to religious services under the First Amendment.

What is Donald Trump’s approval rating? See 1 year of polling averages

0

One year after returning to the White House, President Donald Trump’s approval ratings are near the lowest of his term.

As his inauguration day approaches, President Trump is pushing ahead with an unpopular idea to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO member Denmark. Several polls conducted over multiple weeks at the time showed that many voters wanted President Trump to focus on affordability. President Trump ultimately backed away from his threat to annex Greenland.

However, voters who were asked by pollsters to reflect on the first year of Trump’s second term gave him a low rating. In a CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released on January 16, 58% of Americans say President Trump’s first year in office has been a failure. A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted on January 22 found that only 32% of voters believe the country is better off than it was when President Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

President Trump’s average approval rating, calculated by aggregators, shows a long history of decline, but last week hit the lowest level previously reached at the end of the government shutdown as the controversy over sex offender Jeffrey Epstein escalated.

What is Donald Trump’s approval rating?

According to an average calculated by the New York Times and RealClearPolitics aggregators, President Trump’s approval rating has been in net negative territory since the spring. It was relatively stable from April to November, then fell sharply, rebounded slightly in December, and fell again.

The lowest approval rating for the term was 42.2% on January 16th. The net approval rating, which is the difference between supporters and non-supporters, hit its worst a few days later, on January 20th, at -13.2 points.

As of January 23, 41% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance, according to a New York Times tally. This is the lowest number of the period, according to the Times, but the first time he reached this level was on November 12th.

How does President Donald Trump’s approval rating compare to previous presidents?

Trump’s approval rating as the 45th and 47th president in December, his first year in office, was lower than that of any other modern president during the same period, according to a historical analysis by Gallup. According to Gallup, his December confirmation compares to that of other presidents in their first year in office.
