Valentine’s Day weekend forecast calls for “major storms” in the south and east

0

play

Forecasters said the massive storm could bring heavy rain across the region, with a wet and possibly snowy Valentine’s Day weekend in store for people in the South and Northeast.

“Wide-spread precipitation is expected to develop on Friday (Feb. 13) and Saturday (Feb. 14), spreading rapidly across the south-central states and reaching the east by Sunday (Feb. 15),” the National Weather Service predicted in an online forecast discussion starting Feb. 10.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski agreed, writing in a Feb. 10 online forecast that “significant storms will develop across the central and eastern United States over the weekend and Valentine’s Day weekend.”

He added: “Snow and ice are expected on the northern side of the storm, but one of the biggest concerns is heavy rain and thunderstorms impacting the south-central and southeastern United States.”

Excessive rainfall, risk of bad weather

The National Weather Service is also concerned, putting parts of the region, especially Oklahoma and Arkansas, at “marginal” risk of excessive rainfall.

“There is a growing consensus that moderate to heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley on Friday (Feb. 13) and Saturday (Feb. 14),” the weather service said.

In addition, the Storm Prediction Center, which monitors severe weather such as tornadoes, said, “Some low-level heavy rain is possible over parts of Texas from Friday night (February 13) through Saturday (February 14) and into the Lower Mississippi River/Deep South from Saturday night (Feb. 14) through Sunday (February 15).”

How much rain is likely to fall?

The storm could bring 1 to 4 inches of rain to parts of Texas and Oklahoma, as well as parts of Georgia and the Carolinas, from Friday, Feb. 13 to Sunday, Feb. 15, according to AccuWeather. The storm will begin in the Plains states on Friday, Feb. 13, and will spread eastward into the southern Appalachians over the weekend, Sosnowski said.

“Many areas could experience complete flooding, and this storm could bring that,” he said.

Snow in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast?

The weather service also said the storm could bring snow to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by the end of the week.

The storm “could move through the Southeast and up and out of the East Coast, resulting in wintry precipitation to the north of the low-pressure system from parts of the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast.”

However, due to the lack of cold air, “confidence about specific and potential impacts remains very low.”

Most states require you to file taxes. Why it will be difficult to reach 2025

0

Americans generally fear the IRS enough to make sure to file their federal taxes, but most people also have to remember to pay their state taxes.

There are exceptions. Taxpayers living in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming need not worry. This is because these states do not impose personal income taxes. So does everyone else.

Still, I feel a little relieved. According to the nonprofit Tax Foundation, nine states will lower their income tax rates starting in 2025, meaning more money will stay in your pocket.

But state tax filers need to be even more careful than usual, as many states are not complying with new federal provisions in a major tax and spending bill that President Donald Trump signed into law on July 4.

Americans living in non-compliant states may lose access to new tax breaks on their state returns, including an additional senior citizen deduction and tax exemptions on overtime and tips retroactive to 2025. They may have to add that income when calculating their debt to the state.

Which states will lower their income tax rates in 2025?

Which states are not compliant with federal tax law?

These states do not follow all of the new federal tax laws.

  • California: Trump’s account is not recognized as a tax-deferred retirement account. This means that income is taxed annually to the child in California and growth is not deferred until distribution and child tax rules apply. Additionally, employer contributions are taxable income in California. Only the first $1,000 given by the government to seed the account is excluded from state revenue.
  • Colorado: Refusal to exempt overtime pay from tax. The plan is to add an “excess federal deduction for overtime pay” section to the state tax return. Taxpayers must report the amount withheld to the federal government and add it back for state purposes.
  • new york: Continue to tax tips and overtime pay by adding new codes to the IT-225 form: “Add Exempt Tip Income” and “Add Exempt Overtime Pay.”
  • Illinois: It does not introduce a tax exemption for overtime pay or tips, and would likely update Schedule M to require federally exempt tips and overtime pay to be added to income.
  • maine: Denied bonus senior deductions and deductions for car loan interest, tips, and overtime pay.

Note: The Washington, D.C., City Council passed an emergency bill late last year that carved out parts of the tax code from recent federal tax changes, including a new senior citizen tax deduction and a tip exemption. But Congress is working to overturn this change. The House passed the bill on February 4, and it now goes to the Senate, where it could be voted on as early as this week.

If the Senate passes the bill in the middle of tax season, D.C. Chief Financial Officer Glenn Lee warned in a letter to Congress that the district would “need to pause the current filing season” to update its tax forms and guidance, a process that would take several months.

Who must file a state tax return?

If your state has income taxes, there are two scenarios in which you may need to file a return.

  • you are a resident of the state
  • You are not a resident of that state, but you earn income in that state. Examples of this include rental income from vacation homes and professional athletes and consultants working in different states. You must file a tax return and pay taxes on the income in every state in which you earn income. You must also report that income on your home state tax return, but your home state typically allows you to deduct taxes paid to another state on the same income.

Will the state conduct a tax audit?

yes.

“States are similar to the IRS and have mechanisms to audit taxpayers,” said Ken Rios, tax director at accounting and advisory firm Kaufman Rossin.

Each state has different rules, so it’s important to know what the rules are in the state where you’re filing. Experts say misreported data, mathematical errors, incomplete state tax forms, excessive deductions, and failure to file state tax returns at all or on time are common audit triggers.

State audits work similarly to IRS audits. Typically, the state will contact you via email notifying you of the audit and asking for more information with instructions on how to proceed.

Does a state audit automatically mean an IRS audit?

That’s not necessarily the case, but it’s possible because your state’s tax office is likely communicating with the IRS and some of the information on both returns is the same.

When is state tax due?

Most states typically follow federal guidelines by April 15th. However, you should double-check with your state, as it may vary for various reasons, such as disasters.

If your state has no income tax, there is no deadline.

Judges continue to bash ICE. Their harshest comments are:

0

White House and Homeland Security officials pushed back, criticizing the judges, including some Republican appointees, as “activists.”

play

WASHINGTON – A striking trend is playing out in federal courts across the country. Judges appointed by both parties have issued unusually scathing criticisms of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.

In January, a senior district judge in Texas accused the administration of “haphazardly and incompetently executing the government’s pursuit of daily deportation quotas.”

In his order, Minnesota’s chief judge said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement “likely violated more court orders as of January 2026 than some federal agencies have violated in their entire existence.” Another federal judge called President Donald Trump an “authoritarian” and accused the administration of flouting the First Amendment.

As the Trump administration expands its efforts to carry out the largest mass deportation in U.S. history, it has drawn fierce criticism from members of the judiciary, including judges appointed by Republican presidents.

Since returning to office, President Trump and senior administration officials have taken swift action to step up immigration enforcement, from bringing more federal officers to major U.S. cities to ending bail hearings for detained immigrants.

In response, a number of district court judges have criticized the administration in opinions and courts, accusing ICE of willfully violating hundreds of court orders and denouncing the tactics used by federal agents during raids across the country.

White House and Homeland Security officials pushed back, calling the judges, who have long supported Republicans, “activists.” Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that detainees are receiving proper due process and that the Trump administration is “well prepared to handle the large volume of legal cases” resulting from immigration enforcement.

White House press secretary Abigail Jackson criticized the judges’ pushback in an emailed comment to USA TODAY, saying, “It is appalling that federal judges are sworn to faithfully and impartially enforce the law, yet clearly biased lower courts continue to try to push illegal policy agendas out of court. President Trump will continue to uphold his constitutional obligation to enforce the law and carry out the agenda for which he was elected.”

‘Very likely to be unprecedented’ ruling prompts appeal

Arthur Hellman, a law professor at the University of Pittsburgh and an expert on federal courts, said he reviewed recent statements from district judges and said there appeared to be no historical precedent.

“It is unusual, and perhaps unprecedented, for so many judges to condemn executive action in such strong terms in such a short period of time,” he said.

Amanda Frost, a University of Virginia law professor and immigration expert, agreed that the district judge’s harsh language was unusual. But she noted that the Trump administration has gone further than any administration in modern history to test the limits of its authority.

Meanwhile, some prominent district court judges have ruled in favor of the regime. On February 9, Los Angeles Judge Christina A. Snyder, appointed by President Bill Clinton, blocked a California law banning federal employees from wearing masks, saying it was unconstitutional because it did not apply to all law enforcement officers.

But when the Trump administration has faced resistance from local judges, it has been able to win, at least temporarily, by appealing the rulings.

So far in February, two separate appeals courts have sided with the federal government, allowing authorities to deny bail hearings to immigrants in custody, including those with no criminal records, and allowing the government to move forward with eliminating deportation protections for more than 60,000 immigrants from Nepal, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The successful deportation protection appeal followed a scathing order from San Francisco District Judge Trina Thompson, who accused Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of making racist comments that “perpetuated the discriminatory belief that certain immigrants replace the white population.”

“Do not exceed the law”

U.S. District Judge Jerry Blackwell is among several Minnesota judges who have expressed frustration with what they say is the Trump administration’s consistent violation of court orders stemming from immigration cases.

During a Feb. 3 hearing, Blackwell, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, threatened to hold lawyers representing the federal government in contempt of court in an unusual move.

Julie Le, an ICE attorney sent to assist the Justice Department with processing cases in Minnesota, where ICE launched its largest-ever immigration operation, said she and her colleagues at the U.S. Attorney’s Office were “overwhelmed,” according to the filing.

“When I started this job, to be honest, I had no guidance on what I needed to do,” she told the judge, adding that trying to get a response from ICE about the necessary fixes was like “pulling teeth.”

“This system sucks. This job sucks,” she said, later adding. “Sometimes I wish, for the sake of your honor, you could just disrespect me. Then I could get a good night’s sleep 24 hours a day.”

“The court order is not a recommendation and is not conditional,” Blackwell said.

“Detention without legal authority is not just a technical defect, it is a constitutional injury that falls unfairly on the heads of people who have done nothing wrong to justify it. It is the people who are affected. The vast majority of the hundreds identified in this court are found to be legally present in the country at this time. They live in the community. Some are separated from their families,” Blackwell said.

“The Department of Justice, DHS, and ICE are not above the law. They do exercise extraordinary powers, and that power must exist within constitutional limits,” Blackwell continued. “When people disobey court orders, it’s not just the court’s authority that’s at stake; it’s the rights of the individuals in custody and the integrity of the constitutional system itself.”

Lee has been removed from his post at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota, multiple news outlets reported. A DHS spokeswoman called Lee’s comments “unprofessional and inappropriate,” but did not say whether she had returned to her previous job at ICE.

“ICE is not a law per se.”

In January, Minnesota Chief Judge Patrick Shilts, appointed by President George W. Bush, threatened to hold acting ICE Director Todd Lyons in contempt for violating court orders.

“The court’s patience has reached its limits,” he wrote in an order filed Jan. 26, noting that the administration had ignored “dozens” of orders forcing immigration authorities to hold bail hearings for people in Minneapolis custody.

The immigrant at the center of the case was released from custody after a sharply worded order requiring Lyons to appear in court and explain ICE’s actions. As a result, Schiltz canceled the hearing, but said he still had concerns about violations in other cases.

“This order is accompanied by an appendix identifying 96 court orders that ICE has violated in 74 cases,” Schultz wrote. “This list should give anyone who cares about the rule of law pause, regardless of their political beliefs.”

“ICE is not a law per se,” he added. “While ICE has every right to challenge this court’s orders, ICE, like any other litigant, must comply with the order unless it is overturned or set aside.”

Days earlier, Schultz sparred with the Trump administration after the Justice Department asked him to decide whether to issue arrest warrants for five people, including former CNN anchor Don Lemon, in connection with protests at a church in St. Paul.

Schultz said a survey of all of the 8th Circuit’s chief judges found that none had seen such a request, calling it “frivolous” in a letter to the circuit’s Chief Justice Stephen Colloton.

Hellman said Schiltz joined the bench in 2006 with an “extraordinary reputation.” Mr. Schultz began his professional career clerking for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin G. Scalia, and a few years later taught Justice Amy Coney Barrett at Notre Dame.

“It’s highly unusual for someone with that background and temperament to write something in such strong terms,” Hellman said, noting that Schultz’s Senate confirmation was supported by both Republican and Democratic senators.

Schultz is not the only Republican-appointed federal judge to voice opposition to the administration’s immigration crackdown.

U.S. District Judge Clay Rand, a Bush appointee, wrote in a court order in January that the Trump administration is refusing to provide bail hearings to detained immigrants despite a “final ruling” to do so. He described the backlog of immigration cases as an “administrative-judicial emergency.”

On January 14, Judge William Young, appointed by President Ronald Reagan, called President Trump an “authoritarian” and said he had “conspired to violate” the First Amendment rights of pro-Palestinian activists the administration is targeting for deportation.

“This government doesn’t seem to understand what the First Amendment is,” Young said.

White House press secretary Anne Kelly accused Young of engaging in “left-wing activities” on Fox News Digital. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to USA TODAY that it “looks forward to the appellate court vindicating us in this case.”

Judge reprimands by quoting the Bible and Thomas Jefferson

Some of the most surprising orders condemning the Trump administration were written by U.S. District Judge Fred Bailly, a Clinton appointee.

A Texas district court judge wrote a scathing opinion, citing the Constitution and scripture, ordering the release of 5-year-old Liam Ramos and his father after they were detained outside their Minneapolis home in January.

“This case stems from the government’s haphazard and incompetent execution of pursuing daily deportation quotas when it clearly requires traumatizing children,” Billy wrote.

“The government’s ignorance of the American historical document called the Declaration of Independence is also evident,” he added.

Mr. Biery compared the administration’s actions to those of George III, which the Founding Fathers cited in the Declaration of Independence.

“Thomas Jefferson, 33, enumerated his grievances against the fledgling nation against an authoritarian wannabe king…’We the People’ are hearing echoes of that history,” Billy wrote.

Mr. Biery’s order also included an image of an undercover agent standing behind Mr. Ramos, wearing a blue bunny hat and carrying a Spider-Man backpack, an image that has become emblematic of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement efforts.

Beneath the image, Biery quoted the Bible passages Matthew 19:14 and John 11:35, recalling Jesus Christ’s response to the disciples who tried to prevent children from coming to him. The second quote refers to Jesus Christ’s reaction when he saw the tomb of Lazarus.

“And Jesus wept,” the passage says.

After the order, Liam and his father returned to their home in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. Since then, the Trump administration has sought to hasten their deportation, but a judge on Feb. 6 allowed the family to continue their refugee claims, giving them more time to claim asylum.

The brand’s upcoming Disney Princess collection features new and returning fan-favorite fragrances and is inspired by “the captivating stories of six Disney Princess characters: Aurora, Belle, Mulan, Rapunzel, Snow White and Tiana.”

“Combining Disney’s magical storytelling with Bath & Body Works’ signature craftsmanship, this collection invites fans to step into the enchanting world of their favorite Disney characters through scent in a uniquely evocative way that only Bath & Body Works can offer,” the company said in a news release.

“This collaboration marks a special moment in our continued journey to weave the stories of Disney Princesses into everyday life by celebrating some of the most beloved and fan-favorite characters in a unique way,” Liz Shortreed, Disney’s senior vice president of consumer products, told USA TODAY in a statement.

Products in the collection range from body care options such as fine fragrance mists and body lotions to three-wick candles and wallflowers.

In an exclusive conversation with USA TODAY, Bath & Body Works SVP of Merchandising Christy Lewis said the collaboration, which took more than a year to complete and went through multiple rounds of testing, was an exciting moment to bring together two “beloved” brands.

Lewis said the brands wanted to “protect the authenticity” of their characters while “respecting the individuality of the princesses in a way that people and fans can relate to.” The executive added that each princess was chosen after “deep listening” to customer preferences.

Bath & Body Works Disney Princess Collection Fragrances

Bath & Body Works’ Disney Princess Collection includes six fragrances, two of which are back by popular demand.

Lewis said each fragrance aims to “really encapsulate the characters” by reflecting their stories.

According to Bath & Body Works, fragrances in the Disney Princess Collection include:

  • Aurora: Inspired by Aurora’s “elegance, playfulness, and optimistic nature,” this fragrance features soft rose petals and sandalwood, finished with a touch of shimmering fairy dust.
  • Mulan: Magnolia flowers and sparkling apricots meet intense aquatic freshness in this scent that “reflects Mulan’s spirit of courage, passion and determination.”
  • Rapunzel: Sparkling sundrop flowers and rich nectar wrapped in golden musk evoke Rapunzel’s vibrant and optimistic personality in this fragrance.
  • Bell: Rose petals, sparkling buttercups, and whipped vanilla for those seeking beauty and adventure.
  • snow white: Set against the backdrop of an enchanted forest, mysterious red apples and ripe fruit create a scent as enchanting and whimsical as Snow White.
  • Tiana: Golden amber accented with delicate water lilies and shimmering bayou woods provides a harmonious blend of fruity and floral elements, evoking dreams of fulfillment in the heart of the bayou.
  • life is a fairy tale: A blend of enchanting berries, whimsical floral notes, and the warmth of a kingdom forest that promises eternal happiness. According to Lewis, the scent is “actually created with notes from each princess” and represents “the empowerment of these amazing female characters coming together.”

Bath & Body Works Disney Princess Collection Products

Bath & Body Works’ Disney Princess Collection includes 92 products, including body washes and creams, hand soaps and sanitizers, fine fragrance mists, lip glosses, candles, wallflower diffusers, and decorative accessories, with prices ranging from $1.95 to $125.

Novelty products include:

  • Life is a fairy tale keepsake music box
  • Gold All Princess Backpack
  • Castle 3-Wick Pedestal
  • Aurora 3 core pedestal
  • Mulan Wallflower Diffuser
  • rapunzel coin purse

Lewis teased that each product in the collection includes “a little Easter egg about each princess.”

“We created these great concept mood boards to really characterize each character and what was important to her, and that really helped energize the design and merchandising teams,” Lewis said. “It’s such a narrative moment.”

For example, the Snow White-themed product “has tiny little apples planted throughout the pattern,” Lewis confirmed.

“It’s not overt, but it’s an Easter egg, a nod to her story,” she added.

How to get the Bath & Body Works Disney Princess Collection

The Disney Princess Collection will be available in stores and online in the U.S. and Canada starting Friday, February 13th, but Bath & Body Works Rewards members will have exclusive early access to select items from the collection, including the entire Life’s a Fairy Tale assortment, through the app starting February 12th at 6 a.m. ET/3 a.m. PT.

Curling player Danny Casper with Guillain-Barre syndrome at the Winter Olympics

0

play

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – Danny Casper never cries.

He’s not the emotional type. He’s actually a little aloof. He and his curling teammates joke that he lacked concentration enough to really get thrown out during a match. But looking back on the past two years from the top of Italy’s Dolomites during his first Winter Olympics, Casper can’t help but find himself at a loss for words. Tears well up in his eyes and he can’t stop them. I can’t help but feel all the emotions.

“I don’t want to say I never expected to be here, because that’s what I thought about every day,” Casper told USA Today. “…But at the same time, I feel like he meant it when he said, “I guess all I can do is watch my friends there and support them.”

Curling is Casper’s life. He’s been on this path for 13 years, ever since he was one of a handful of juniors at New York’s Ardsley Curling Club, playing on the ice with kind adults who accompanied him. If you ask him what he does outside of sports, you won’t get an answer. (“Well, maybe not very healthy,” he admitted sarcastically. “I don’t know.”)

But two years ago, he had to give it up. I had to “forget about curling” for a little while. It was a decision his body made because he could no longer walk. “I really couldn’t do anything.” That includes operating a cell phone, which no doubt means picking up and throwing 40-odd pound curling stones.

Casper developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. This can cause numbness, weakness, and paralysis. It took three months before doctors realized what was happening to him. He has been living with the diagnosis, which affects 1 to 2 in 100,000 people, for two years and beyond.

There are better days now than before. After all, he beat John Shuster & Co. at the U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify, so he’s a skip at the Winter Olympics. But the pain still hits him. After going through this four-year cycle, Casper isn’t sure if he’ll be able to continue until 2030, if he still has the heart then. (The exact cause and treatment for GBS is unknown, but most people make a full recovery. Casper was originally told it would go away within eight months to a year.)

He is doing his best to take advantage of this experience. I wish I was better at things like that. “I’m always goofing around during games and stuff, so I don’t think this moment really got to me, in a good or bad way,” Casper said. “I just want to be a little more like, ‘Wow, I’m here for the Olympics.'”

But there were also moments, like Tuesday’s press conference, when Casper questioned what it meant to be in Cortina after everything he’s been through. My voice caught in my throat and my jaw trembled as I answered. Competing at the highest level is special. But do they compete at all?

“At the end of the day, I’m curling,” Casper said. “That’s pretty much all I can ask for.”

Casper initially ignored the first signs that something was wrong in 2024. He was competing in the USA Curling Mixed Doubles Nationals. He doesn’t usually play mixed doubles. And although he doesn’t usually sweep, he was doing it for his partner, Vicki Persinger.

Sweeps were never one of Casper’s strengths. So when he started dealing with neck and back pain at events, he chalked it up to being a skill issue, not a medical issue. But over the next two weeks, he “continued to go downhill super fast.”

Casper bounced from doctor to doctor for three months. They threw him a phone book with diagnostic results. Perhaps it’s multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease that “causes the destruction of the protective membranes of nerves,” according to the Mayo Clinic. MS can cause symptoms including, but not limited to, numbness, weakness, difficulty walking, and changes in vision.

Maybe you have a vitamin D deficiency. Casper scoffed at the idea. It was not thought that vitamin deficiency was the cause of all this. Then he Googled and realized where they were coming from. (“I think I did pretty well not to Google a lot for a while, but then I had to Google a little bit,” Casper joked. “Then I’m like, ‘You’re dead.’”)

So he continued taking vitamin D tablets for a month. It didn’t do anything. Wow, another month wasted, he thought.

The USOPC (United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee) referred him to a doctor through its partnership with the University of Florida Hospital System. After reviewing all of Mr. Casper’s information and performing EMG (electromyography) neurological testing, he diagnosed the 22-year-old man with GBS.

“A lot of people think, oh, I was sick, I overcame it, and now I’m here at the Olympics. They’re like, ‘What the heck?’ It’s not over at all.”

Casper takes medication for treatment and frequently changes regiments as needed. He was started on gabapentin, a neuroleptic. Then “a bunch of muscle relaxers.” A few months ago, he started taking carbamazepine, a drug commonly used for seizures.

It’s working. In most cases. But Casper didn’t want to risk taking another medication that would make him sick at the Olympics. He’ll probably decide to go home after this season and try something new this summer.

As his dexterity began to return, Casper decided to return to curling. He missed more than half of the 2024-25 season. At last season’s Nationals, Casper and USA Curling’s alternate Rich Luohonen (30 years Casper’s senior) decided that the skipper would play every other game. It’s basically load management.

If his hands bother him during a game, his teammates help Casper clean rocks off the ice, an action that no doubt causes other teams to view Casper as some sort of diva or pre-Madonna. He still goes to the gym with them most mornings at 6am. He focuses on mobility training over strength training and participates because he recognizes the importance of just being there.

Together they won the Olympic Trials and started a team led by American curling legend John Shuster that qualified for Cortina. The shocking feat was made all the more impressive because every upset was made all the more impressive by how often they had to work with another skip during Casper’s absence.

“We have nothing to lose,” he said, but that doesn’t take away from the ultimate goal: gold.

One of the most difficult parts of living with GBS is that it’s invisible, Casper says. No one can.

He wants people living with invisible autoimmune diseases to know that it’s okay to rely on others for support. Even if it feels strange and difficult.

It’s like a curling game. Casper is the team captain but must rely on sweepers Aidan Oldenburg and Ben Richardson to guide the rocks to the button. Friends, family, and teammates are the cleaners in Casper’s life. They helped lead him to Cortina for a chance at golden glory.

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5, and players can choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose Easy Pick/Quick Pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered 1-70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase your non-jackpot prize by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Where can I buy lottery tickets?

Mega Millions tickets can be purchased directly at gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

You can also order tickets online through Jackpocket, the USA TODAY Network’s official digital lottery courier, in the following U.S. states and territories: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, and West Virginia.

Viewer numbers for Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show revealed

0

Audience numbers for Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show have been announced.

Apple Music’s Super Bowl LX Halftime Show averaged 128.2 million viewers in the U.S. during the 8:15-8:30 p.m. ET time slot, according to a Feb. 10 NBC Sports news release. This number reflects national viewership only. A global opinion tally “will be published early next week.”

The Super Bowl broadcast reached 137.8 million viewers in the second quarter, breaking NBC’s record for highest viewership. Average viewership across NBC-owned platforms and NFL+ was 124.9 million, based on Nielsen Big Data+ Panel measurements.

According to NBC, Super Bowl 60 is second only to the 2025 Super Bowl as the most-watched program in U.S. history.

Bad Bunny’s viewership falls short of the numbers shared by the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation for Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 halftime show. The Grammys darling had “Apple Music’s most-watched halftime show ever,” with 133.5 million plays, the companies reported at the time.

How many views did Bad Bunny get compared to Turning Point USA’s halftime show?

Fans praised the 31-year-old’s career-spanning set and its message of love, as well as the details that paid homage to his Puerto Rican upbringing.

But the show, performed almost entirely in Spanish, drew ire from critics including President Donald Trump, who called it “an insult to the greatness of America” and complained that “nobody can understand a word this guy is saying.”

Turning Point USA hosted a behind-the-scenes show, the All-American Halftime Show, around the same time Bad Bunny took the stage. The YouTube stream reached 6.1 million concurrent views and has since racked up more than 21 million views as of February 10, according to the New York Times.

A YouTube video of Bad Bunny’s halftime show, uploaded by the NFL’s English and Spanish accounts (as well as NFL Brazil) on February 8th, has more than 61 million views as of February 10th.

The performance, which featured Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett, was also broadcast on Rumble (which garnered approximately 2.3 million views) and other networks.

“Trump Account” start date, qualifications, and opening method

0

play

If you didn’t know about the “Trump Account” until a week ago, you probably have by now.

The federal government’s Newborn Savings Program got a big boost in visibility during Sunday’s Super Bowl thanks to strategically placed ads.

The initiative will deposit $1,000 into a savings account for every child born between 2025 and 2028. This is basically an IRA for your child. Pledges from philanthropists and American companies have poured in, potentially expanding the program’s reach.

Here, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the Trump Account, starting with how to get one.

When will Trump Account be available?

The Trump account will launch on July 5, 2026. Donations cannot be made before that date.

How do I open a Trump account?

Parents or legal guardians have at least two options for opening an account. The newest and easiest method is to file IRS Form 4547 online at trumpaccounts.gov. This form asks for your date of birth, social security number, and contact information.

You can also file Form 4547 with your 2025 tax return.

Vanguard advises eligible families to consider submitting their forms early to ensure their accounts are ready for rollout in July.

After filing, the IRS will establish a Trump account. The official website states that “the affiliated financial company where the Trump account is held will contact you shortly and provide detailed instructions on how to complete the setup.”

The guidance document says the process will begin in May.

One detail that has not yet been made public is the identity of the “affiliated financial company” that will manage the account.

When will $1,000 be deposited into your Trump account?

The seed money will be deposited into Trump’s account after July 4 and “as soon as practicable” after the account is verified, according to a Treasury Department guidance document.

Who actually owns the Trump account?

Trump accounts are owned by children but managed by adults until the child turns 18, according to Fidelity Investments.

Who is eligible for a Trump account?

All US citizens born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible to obtain a Trump Account. Must have a social security number.

U.S. children under the age of 18 born before 2025 will also be eligible for a Trump Account, which will have all the same features but will not receive the $1,000 seed money from the federal government.

Only one Trump Account may be opened per child.

When can I withdraw my funds?

In this regard, the facts remain unclear.

According to IRS rules, you can begin receiving distributions from your Trump account starting January 1 of the year you turn 18.

However, that guidance could change to only allow withdrawals after the child turns 18.th said Rita Assaf, Fidelity’s vice president of retirement promotions. Reason: Children under the age of 18 do not have the same legal rights as adults.

From that point on, the Trump Account will function like an individual retirement account. IRA rules generally include penalties for withdrawals before age 59 1/2, with some qualifying exceptions such as first-time home purchases, higher education, and medical expenses. After age 59 1/2, you can withdraw IRA funds without penalty.

How can I invest money in a Trump account?

The Trump account comes with unusual restrictions. Funds can only be invested in low-cost index funds, i.e. mutual funds or ETFs that track an index of “primarily” U.S. stocks. According to IRS guidance, at least 90% of the funds must be invested in U.S. companies. The Fund may not charge an expense ratio of more than 0.1%. The expense ratio is basically an administrative fee.

J. Spencer Williams, founder and CEO of financial technology company Retirement Clearinghouse, said this is a unique rule with an overarching theme of “Investing in America.”

Once a child turns 18, the rules change and the Trump account becomes a “regular IRA,” Williams said. Account holders then have more freedom to choose how to invest their funds.

Who will manage Trump’s account?

The U.S. Treasury Department will create and manage the Trump account, and an as-yet-unnamed “partner company” will be the administrator.

Eventually, families will be allowed to move their accounts to outside financial providers. It’s probably the same company that already manages your 401(k) and IRA accounts.

Who can contribute to a Trump account?

Donations can come from almost anyone: individuals, employers, governments, philanthropists, and charities.

How much can I donate to my Trump account?

The contribution limit is $5,000 per year. However, one-time “seed” contributions from governments do not count toward the annual limit, nor do contributions from governments or charities.

Employers can contribute up to $2,500 per employee per year, which can be split among multiple children. Employees can transfer their pre-tax paychecks to Trump accounts. These contributions count toward the $5,000 annual limit.

The annual limit is indexed to inflation and increases over time.

How are Trump Accounts Taxed?

Individual contributions to the Trump account typically come from after-tax dollars. If these funds are withdrawn, only the gains will be taxed, Vanguard advises.

Contributions from other sources, such as employers and employees, charities and governments, are pre-tax, so the full amount withdrawn is taxed.

With so many potential contributors and different tax rules and variable contribution limits, Trump account holders may have a hard time keeping track of them.

“It’s unclear what happens when your grandfather puts in money and your employer puts in money,” Williams said. “It’s unclear how all this will resolve itself over time.”

Who announced the Trump Account Matching Fund?

Philanthropists Michael and Susan Dell have pledged $6.25 billion, which will include $250 each for the first 25 million Trump account applicants under the age of 10 born before 2025 in ZIP codes with a median income of less than $150,000.

Dell’s pledge expands the reach of the Trump account, and “it’s not for newborns,” Fidelity’s Assaf said.

Philanthropists Ray and Barbara Dalio pledged to donate $250 to 300,000 children in Connecticut. Hedge fund manager Brad Gerstner announced a similar pledge in Indiana as part of the federal government’s 50-State Challenge to mobilize philanthropy across the country.

JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab, BlackRock, Visa, Intel, Bank of America and many other companies have pledged to donate to Trump accounts for the children of their employees.

Prosecutors fail in their attempt to indict six Democratic Party members

0

play

A grand jury has rejected the Justice Department’s attempt to indict six Democratic congressmen who appeared in a video telling soldiers they had the right to disobey orders they thought were illegal.

Reuters reported on Tuesday, February 10, citing sources, that prosecutors sought to charge the lawmakers with violating federal laws that prohibit interfering with the loyalty, morale and discipline of the U.S. military. The prosecution was led by the office of U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro for the District of Columbia.

Participants in the November video titled “Don’t Give Up the Ship” included Sens. Elyse Slotkin and Mark Kelly, as well as Reps. Jason Crow, Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, and Chrissy Houlahan. All six are U.S. military veterans.

Slotkin said in a statement on Tuesday, February 10, that the Justice Department’s decision to indict her was in response to her “producing a 90-second video that simply cited the law.” The controversial video reflected Democratic concerns about President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to U.S. cities and the legality of military attacks on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean.

The video sparked the ire of the Trump administration, with the president slamming the six members of Congress for “seditious behavior, worthy of the death penalty!” In real social. President Trump later addressed the post in an interview on Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show,” saying he was not threatening to execute any members of Congress.

“Today, it was a grand jury of anonymous American citizens who upheld the rule of law and decided that this case should not proceed,” Slotkin said on TV’s “X.” “Regardless of what President Trump and Mr. Pirro continue to do in this case, tonight we can score a point for the Constitution, for free speech, and for the rule of law.”

The grand jury’s decision was first reported by NBC News and the New York Times.

USA TODAY reached out to the Justice Department regarding the charges on Tuesday, February 10, but did not immediately receive a response.

Senator Kerry: “It’s all because I said I didn’t like them.”

In a post on X, Kelly called the attempted prosecution an “outrageous abuse of power.” Last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that he had formally reprimanded Kelly and demoted him to retirement following the video.

“It wasn’t enough that Pete Hegseth accused me and threatened to demote me. Now it looks like they tried to indict me for a crime, all because I said something they didn’t like,” Kelly said in the X post.

Other lawmakers who appeared in the video expressed similar sentiments.

“Today, America’s grand jury stood up to the president’s outrageous abuse of power and taxpayer dollars and respected the Constitution. Even in the face of threats, I will continue to do my job and uphold my oath to the Constitution,” Goodlander said on TV’s “X.”

“I will not be intimidated for one second by the Trump administration or Department of Justice lawyers who tried and failed to indict me today,” Delzio said on social media. “The tide is turning and accountability will be held,” Crowe added in a video statement.

Houlahan did not directly address whether he was the subject of a grand jury investigation, but shared NBC News’ coverage of the unsuccessful indictment, calling it a “win for all Americans.”

“This is good news for the Constitution and the freedom of speech it guarantees,” Houlahan said in a post on X.

Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts was one of several Senate Democrats posting on social media to comment on the administration’s failure to win charges, calling it a “failed coup.”

“The six goals were right all along: Don’t obey illegal orders,” Markey said. “Speak truth to power, because it wins.”

A person detained in the Guthrie case. What we know so far.

Just hours after the FBI released footage of a masked “person of interest” on Nancy Guthrie’s doorstep, authorities detained the person south of Tucson.

play

Arizona authorities say a person has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie on February 10, just hours after authorities released surveillance footage of a possible masked suspect on the doorstep of an 84-year-old’s home.

Law enforcement has not identified the person in custody or whether it is the same person seen in black-and-white surveillance footage from Guthrie’s home outside Tucson, Arizona. FBI Director Kash Patel called the person in the video a “person of interest,” but the person in custody has not been characterized as such.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed late Friday night that a person in custody in Arizona is being questioned in connection with the investigation into the incident involving Savannah Guthrie’s mother.

A woman who identified herself as the detainee’s mother-in-law told CNN on Tuesday night that the man had “nothing to do” with the Guthrie incident and urged investigators to search his home, saying he had “nothing to hide.”

Here’s what we know so far:

“It has nothing to do with that.”

A woman who said she was the mother-in-law of the person being questioned told reporters, referring to the Guthrie incident, that her daughter’s husband had “nothing to do with it.”

Her interview took place as investigators searched her property south of Tucson near the Mexican border.

She directed investigators to search the house.

“You can go and check the house, there’s no one there,” she said, adding that investigators said they targeted her property after receiving a tip.

The woman said her son-in-law works as a delivery driver in the Tucson area.

Where was the person detained?

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the person authorities were questioning on Feb. 10 was taken into custody south of Tucson. Guthrie’s home is just north of the city.

Pima County Sheriff’s Office officials announced late Tuesday night that the department and the FBI Evidence Response Team are conducting a court-authorized investigation into Gasle’s disappearance in Rio Rico, Arizona, about 90 miles south of Tucson and near the Mexican border.

Authorities did not provide details of the search, but said it would take several hours.

How was the person detained and why?

Authorities said they detained the person during a traffic stop in connection with the Guthrie incident.

The sheriff’s office did not share any information about what led the officer to stop the person on the street.

When was the person taken into custody?

ABC News first reported the news shortly after 7 p.m. local time in Arizona, citing unnamed law enforcement officials.

Pima County Sheriff’s Office officials did not respond to questions from USA TODAY about when he was taken into custody, saying only “earlier today.”

Are you the person in the video?

Law enforcement in Arizona has not yet said whether the person being questioned is the same person seen in the video recently released by the FBI.

USA TODAY has reached out to local authorities, the Department of Justice and the FBI for additional information.

Who is in the video?

Authorities have not identified the masked person seen in the footage outside Guthrie’s home, but Patel described him as a “person of interest.”

“We’re confident that we’re looking at what we call a person of interest,” Patel said of surveillance footage taken from a Google Nest doorbell camera that appears to have been disabled. “However, as with any investigation, you are a person of interest until you are removed or you are found to be the actual culprit or participant.”

Patel added: “That’s the stage we’re at right now.”

When was Guthrie last seen?

Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, has not been seen since Saturday, January 31st. She was first reported missing the next day, February 1st.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said they believe she was taken from her home outside Tucson against her will.

How USA TODAY rates providers

0

Tax relief services can be difficult to compare because eligibility depends on individual financial circumstances and results can vary widely. In addition, companies may offer different types of assistance, from application support to direct negotiations with the IRS.

To help our readers evaluate providers with more confidence, USA TODAY has developed a weighted scoring methodology that focuses on compliance, transparency, service quality, and customer experience.

Our rankings are based on independent company research, public information, and customer feedback from third-party review platforms. Each company receives a composite score based on the following categories:

Compliance, credentials, and trust (28%)

Trustworthiness metrics are important because tax relief involves negotiating with the IRS and handling sensitive financial information. Companies that demonstrate responsible business practices and strong compliance signals are given higher scores.

We evaluate:

  • Years of establishment
  • Legal or regulatory history
  • FTC or state enforcement actions
  • Industry memberships and certifications
  • Risk disclosure
  • marketing practice

Price transparency and cost clarity (20%)

A wide range of reduced tax fees and unclear pricing are common consumer complaints. Companies that clearly explain costs and expectations will receive higher scores.

We evaluate:

  • Price transparency
  • Free consultation reception status
  • Money Back or Service Guarantee
  • Clear explanation of service phases
  • written agreement or contract

Services provided and case support (18%)

Tax relief companies can help with a variety of IRS programs and tax resolution needs. Companies that offer extensive support for complex tax situations score higher.

We evaluate:

  • Support for “compromise”
  • Installment agreement support
  • Fine reduction service
  • Unfiled return support
  • Audit representative
  • Reviewing IRS Notices

Customer experience and satisfaction (14%)

Customer feedback helps companies demonstrate how they support their customers throughout the tax resolution process. Companies that consistently provide positive feedback are given higher scores.

We evaluate:

  • Better Business Bureau ratings and complaint history
  • Trustpilot, Google, and ConsumerAffairs reviews
  • complaint resolution pattern
  • clarity of communication

Professional access and qualifications (12%)

Tax relief services often involve qualified professionals. Companies that provide access to qualified experts receive higher scores.

We evaluate:

  • Availability of a CPA, registered agent, or tax accountant
  • Transparency about who handles cases
  • Access to qualified experts
  • case management structure

Education and transparency (8%)

Tax breaks can be confusing, and companies that help consumers understand the process will come out on top.

We assess whether companies:

  • Demystifying IRS programs
  • Provide guidance on qualifications
  • provide educational resources
  • Avoid making unrealistic claims about results

Methodology notes

Tax relief companies are not part of the IRS or any government agency. Rankings evaluate a company’s transparency, service, and customer experience, not whether taxpayers qualify for tax credits or reduce their tax liability.

All data is verified and regularly checked for accuracy through company websites, customer review platforms, and publicly available business information.

At least 9 people killed, 25 injured in shootings at Canadian school and home

0

play

At least nine people were killed and dozens injured in two separate shootings at a school and a residence in northeastern British Columbia on Tuesday, February 10th. Canadian authorities called the incident one of the worst mass shootings in the country’s history.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police received reports of a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School around 1:20 p.m. local time. Officers responded to the scene and found dozens of victims and the suspected shooter, who was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials said six victims died inside the high school and a seventh died on the way to the hospital. Two others were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said at a news conference that 25 more people were injured, with injuries ranging from “serious” to “minor,” adding that police would not release the ages of the victims until all family members had been notified of their deaths.

Police said two people were found dead in a home as part of the investigation, which appears to be related to the school shooting.

“On nights like tonight, I don’t know what to say,” said a somber Eby. “For myself, and I think for many British Columbians and Canadians as well, it makes us think about the safety of our children when they go to school…It’s events like this that make us pause about that safety.”

During the attack, police identified the suspect as a “female with brown hair wearing a dress.” At a news conference later that day, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superintendent Ken Floyd said the gunman was the suspect named in the alert.

Authorities declined to release further details about the suspect.

First responders praised for preventing further loss of life

British Columbia Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger called the Tumbler Ridge tragedy “one of the worst mass shootings in the history of our province and country.”

“This is a devastating day for our close-knit community and the sense of loss being felt is deep,” she said. “As a mother, I hold in my heart the families who have lost loved ones and the many who have been injured. For their families, the nightmare is far from over.”

Eby and Krieger said Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived within two minutes and credited the quick actions of first responders for preventing further loss of life.

“What was already a pretty devastating tragedy could have been prevented from getting much worse,” Eby said. “And as a police officer at the scene of a shooting like this, putting yourself at risk to protect the lives of others, it’s heroic work. We’re very grateful that our police responded so quickly and fearlessly, and that they conducted training to protect as many people as possible at the school.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that he was “devastated by today’s horrific shootings.”

“Today, I join Canadians in mourning those whose lives have been irrevocably changed, and I thank the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives for their fellow citizens.” “Our ability to come together in a crisis is the best of this country: our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.”

Tumbler Ridge is a remote municipality of approximately 2,400 people located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northern British Columbia, approximately 1,120 miles northeast of Vancouver.

The school district announced that “due to a tragic event,” Tumbler Ridge Middle School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the remainder of this week.

Worst mass shooting in Canadian history

The Tumbler Ridge attack was one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history, and such tragedies are relatively rare in Canada.

The deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history occurred in 2020, when 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman went on a 13-hour rampage across Nova Scotia, killing 22 people before being shot dead by police.

The worst school shooting in Canadian history occurred in 1989, when 25-year-old Marc Lepine carried out an anti-feminist attack, shooting and killing 14 women and injuring 10 more women and four men before committing suicide.

Other gun tragedies in the country include the 2017 attack on a mosque by 27-year-old Alexandre Bissonnette, which killed six people and injured five others. He later pleaded guilty to the attack and is serving a life sentence.

In 2014, 53-year-old Hu Lam murdered eight friends and family members, including his wife, their eight-year-old son, and three-year-old niece, before committing suicide in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1996, 30-year-old Mark Vijay Chahal shot and killed his ex-wife and eight of her family members before committing suicide in Vernon, British Columbia.

How much does a used 2026 Tesla Model S cost?

0

This used Tesla has faced extreme price declines in recent years, creating a buying opportunity.

play

  • Tesla may discontinue the Model S, but it will still be available on the used car market.
  • A new Model S costs about $95,000, but used models can be found for under $18,000.

Tesla may discontinue the Model S to make room for Optimus Bot production, but drivers can still purchase the electric car as a used car at a significant discount compared to the original manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

The Model S was originally introduced in 2012 as one of the American automaker’s first mainstream electric modern luxury sedans. Although its popularity has fluctuated since its debut, the Model S remains an important part of the company’s history of clean energy and electric vehicles.

Tesla’s Model S is very performance-oriented. Fortunately for drivers, there are several used models listed at affordable prices.

How much does a used Tesla Model S electric car cost?

A brand new Tesla Model S electric car costs a whopping $94,990. Depending on the model year and used car buying platform, you can find a used Tesla Model S EV for less than $18,000.

Carvana has several Model S EVs listed for under $18,000. These models were initially priced at approximately $70,000 as new EVs. This is a depreciation rate of over 74%.

Carvana’s most affordable 2014 Tesla Model S EV starts at $17,590 before taxes and surcharges. Power output is 302 horsepower and the original range was 208 miles, but as the battery ages, the range will decrease significantly.

CarMax also has several new and used Model S EVs listed on its site, starting at $34,998 for the 2021 Long Range Plus model. Drivers interested in nameplates can find many new and used models that are much more affordable than the average new car price of about $50,000.

What’s so special about the Tesla Model S?

The Model S is special because it is one of the first electric cars to prove that EVs are attractive and practical enough to serve as a daily driver’s sports car. It paved the way for many vehicles in this segment and is one of the most impressive electric cars on the market, even though it has spawned numerous rivals over the years.

Even the older Model S EV boasts thrilling performance. Thanks to depreciation, drivers can now experience what was once one of the most expensive EVs at a fraction of the original price.

Should you buy a used Tesla Model S?

Owning an electric car isn’t for everyone. If you plan to use your EV as a daily driver, whether it’s commuting to work or regular long-distance trips, you’ll need a solid charging plan. The Model S has a lot of appeal as a used electric car, but battery deterioration is a big factor to consider when considering practicality.

Used Model S electric cars are a good option for drivers who can charge at home or are willing to purchase and install a home charging system for their car, so range isn’t a big issue. It’s also a good choice for Tesla fans interested in quick acceleration and good performance.

Governors skip meeting with Trump after White House excludes Democratic lawmakers

0

play

The National Governors Association will not attend a meeting with President Donald Trump later this month after the White House excluded Democratic governors, President Kevin Stitt told members Monday, according to sources.

Governors from all over the country gather in Washington every year for the NGA conference. Traditionally, the president welcomes governors to the White House, where they meet with Cabinet members and have formal dinners with the governors and their wives.

“Not inviting individual governors to the White House meeting undermines an important opportunity for federal-state cooperation,” Brandon Tatum, CEO of the bipartisan association representing governors, said in a statement.

“At this point in our nation’s history, it is critical that our institutions continue to maintain unity, dignity, and constructive engagement.”

The White House did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The White House meeting, scheduled for February 20, was scheduled as part of the association’s annual winter gathering. The association’s leadership is comprised of nine members, including Mr. Stitt, a Republican, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, who serves as vice president.

The New York Times reported last week that President Trump plans to hold a separate bipartisan dinner for state governors and their spouses at the White House.

However, the newspaper reported that Trump personally rejected invitations from Moore and Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who is also a member of the association.

“The National Governors Association has a long tradition of bipartisan gatherings to exchange best practices and ideas, regardless of party affiliation. That’s what Americans expect and deserve, but unfortunately the White House doesn’t seem to feel the same way,” Moore’s press secretary David Turner said.

A spokesperson for Polis did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

  • The most expensive car brand was Porsche, with an average transaction price of $128,761.

Car buyers paid an average of $49,191 for a new car in January 2026, according to Cox Automotive.

The average price of a new car in January was down 2.2% from the average price of $50,326 in December 2025, the group said. Cox also said automakers’ average MSRP was $51,288, and the group said list prices had exceeded $50,000 for 10 consecutive months.

Cox said automakers are asking a record $52,627 for a new car in December 2025. The group said automakers also cut incentives in January, going from an average of about $3,774 in December to $3,200 in January.

Erin Keating, an executive analyst at Cox Automotive, said in a statement that January’s statistics show that consumers’ preference for high-end luxury models, which was evident toward the end of last year, is receding.

“The January pricing story is a reminder of how much mix still matters in this market,” Keating said. “Despite the fact that prices have naturally fallen from December’s closing prices for luxury goods, they hit a new high in January.”

On February 9, Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles sent a letter to fellow Republican Representative Brett Guthrie of Kentucky, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, demanding that the NFL and media company NBCUniversal investigate what he claimed was “prior knowledge, consideration, and approval” of the music superstar’s performance.

In a social media post, Ogles described the 13-minute show as “a show of pure vulgarity” that featured “explicit gay sex acts, women provocatively gyrating, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping.”

“If that’s not outrageous enough,” the congressman went on to denounce Bad Bunny’s Spanish lyrics as “openly glorifying sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities.” Ogles added that it was illegal to display “these flagrant indecent acts” on public airways.

The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show was performed almost entirely in Spanish for the first time and drew more than 128 million viewers, making it the second most-watched halftime show of all time, behind Kendrick Lamar’s performance in 2025.

The NFL and NBC did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment on the Ogles’ request for an investigation.

Ogles: “American culture cannot be ridiculed without consequences.”

In a two-page letter to the Energy and Commerce Committee, which regulates broadcasting and oversees the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ogles specifically mentioned the Bad Bunny songs “Safaela” and “Yo Pereo Sola.”

Ogles claimed that their sexual content “is readily apparent, even across language barriers.”

“This language barrier did not mitigate the explicit nature of the material,” Ogles wrote. “Rather, it has strengthened the obligation on broadcasters to use reasonable efforts in reviewing, translating and evaluating content before broadcast…

“Broadcasting a performance dominated by sexually explicit lyrical themes and provocative choreography during one of the year’s most widely viewed family broadcasts calls into question whether NBCUniversal has fulfilled its responsibilities under these long-standing standards,” Ogles continued.

However, in the actual performance, Bad Bunny reportedly refrained from singing the most explicit lyrics of these songs. Still, Ogles continued the discussion on social media platforms.

“These flagrant indecent acts are illegal to broadcast on public airways,” Ogles said. “American culture will not be ridiculed or corrupted without consequences.”

Other politicians protest Bad Bunny’s halftime performance

Ogles wasn’t the only Republican outraged by Bad Bunny’s performance. Florida Congressman Randy Fine, February 9th post on X, He claimed the program was “illegal.”

“If he had said these lyrics or any other offensive, pornographic, vulgar language in English live on air, the broadcast would have been canceled and he would have been subject to a hefty fine,” Fine wrote. “Puerto Ricans are Americans and we all live by the same rules.”

Fine said he would contact FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and call for “drastic action” against the NFL, NBC and Bad Bunny himself.

Additionally, Missouri Republican Congressman Mark Alford said on Real America’s Voice on February 10 that House Republicans were “investigating” Bad Bunny’s halftime show.

Alford said this performance could be “much worse than Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction,” referring to the controversial 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show featuring Jackson and Justin Timberlake that coined the terms “wardrobe malfunction” and “nipplegate.”

Alford declined to elaborate further on the potential investigation into Bad Bunny.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump also criticized Bad Bunny’s halftime show, calling it “absolutely awful” and “an insult to the greatness of America” in a February 8 post on Truth Social.

“No one can understand a word this man is saying. That dance is disgusting, especially to young kids watching from across America and around the world,” Trump wrote. “This ‘show’ is nothing more than a ‘slap in the face’ to our country.”

A group of Buddhist monks who have been walking across the country since October in search of peace arrived in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, February 10th, the final destination of their 4,300-mile journey.

The men crossed eight U.S. states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia) to reach the nation’s capital.

The journey was not an easy one. For the past few weeks, about 20 traveling monks have been exposed to freezing temperatures. In November, the monks’ security vehicle was involved in a traffic accident, leaving one monk with serious injuries that required his leg to be amputated.

Additionally, the group’s beloved dog Aloka, a former stray dog adopted from Kolkata, India, underwent surgery for a leg injury. The puppy then rejoined the pack.

Why are the monks walking?

The monks set out on the journey to remind Americans that peace is not a destination, according to a statement from the pilgrims.

“As the nation faces challenges of division, mental health crises, and internal and external conflicts, this pilgrimage offers a simple but profound message: Peace begins within each person’s heart and spreads outward to families, communities, and the nation as a whole,” a Walk for Peace news release said.

Buddhist monks often undertake long walking pilgrimages lasting several months. During the walk, the monks observed a strict code of celibacy inspired by ancient traditions. These traditions include eating only one meal a day and sleeping under a tree, which is considered a practice of humility, patience, and mental focus.

The monks announced they arrived in Washington, D.C., around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10.

While entering the area from Virginia, Venerable Pannakara Bhikkhu expressed gratitude to those who had followed their journey through a video posted on social media. He encouraged his supporters to continue calling for peace to “change this world together.”

When will the monk go home?

The group is hosting a two-day event in the capital. On Wednesday, February 11, they will walk to the Peace Memorial in front of the U.S. Capitol. In the afternoon, they will walk to the Lincoln Memorial, where a closing ceremony will be held to mark the end of their journey.

The group, which hails from the Phuong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas, is scheduled to return home on Thursday, February 12th.

Katy Perry is sharing more insight into her romance with Justin Trudeau.

In an Instagram post on Feb. 10, the 41-year-old singer included two photos of herself and the former Canadian prime minister enjoying some winter activities together.

“♥️Let’s make love a revolution♥️,” Perry captioned the merry-go-round in the image.

Prime Minister Trudeau, 54, snapped a selfie of them on a snowy mountaintop, wearing helmets and cheering for the camera. In a second photo, Prime Minister Perry and Prime Minister Trudeau pose together at a hot pot dinner. She also shared a photo of what appears to be instructions on how to solve a Rubik’s Cube on stationery for the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada.

Prime Minister Trudeau has served as prime minister since 2015, and announced his resignation in January 2025 due to political pressure.

These latest photos were shared two months after the pair became Instagram official in December, where Perry posted a collection of photos and videos from her time in Tokyo, including some quality time with her boyfriend.

Mr. Perry and Mr. Trudeau have been in a relationship since the summer, when reports of their outing to Montreal made headlines. Shortly after, a video posted on social media showed Trudeau singing with Perry at his Montreal concert.

The two have sparked speculation over the past year with their occasional public outings, but neither has publicly commented on the status of their relationship.

Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire announced their separation in August 2023. They have three children from their 18 years of marriage.

Perry and her ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, announced their split in July after nine years together.
