Should I cancel my Cancun trip?

0

good morning! I’m Daniel de Visé from Daily Money.

The recent murder of an alleged drug lord in Mexico continues to resonate in the U.S. travel industry. Some families are even wondering if it’s safe to plan a wedding in Cancun a year from now.

Meanwhile, some Americans who were already in Mexico are frustrated by the cancellation of commercial flights and are considering commercial alternatives.

Will consumers ever receive their customs refund checks?

The conversation about refunds has been reverberating across the country since the U.S. Supreme Court reversed many of President Donald Trump’s import tariffs in a Feb. 20 ruling.

By one estimate, these tariffs would amount to about a $1,000 increase in taxes per American household in 2025. Now, can consumers expect to get most of that money back?

President Trump is pushing for a review of the “SAVE America” vote. Why the Democratic Party is against it.

0

In his State of the Union address, the president claimed there was “rampant fraud” in U.S. elections and said he wanted voter ID laws and other strict checks.

play

WASHINGTON – In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump called for passage of a “Save the Country” bill to protect the 2026 midterm elections from fraud and illegal voting.

In a speech on February 24, President Trump said, “There is rampant fraud in our elections.” President Trump said of Democrats’ opposition to the American Rescue Act, “The reason they don’t want to do it is because they want to cheat. There’s only one reason.”

President Trump called on Republican Senate Minority Leader John Thune (South Dakota) to pass the bill as soon as possible, saying, “Congress must come together and enact this common sense bill to save our country now.”

Trump added: “It’s very simple.” “All voters must present a voter ID. All voters must present proof of citizenship to vote. And no more falsified mail-in ballots are prohibited, except for illness, disability, military or travel. None.”

Democrats also worry that interference could skew the November election, arguing that the SAVE America Act itself could disenfranchise large numbers of eligible Democratic voters, especially minorities and women, and give Republicans an unfair advantage.

Stakeholders across the political spectrum agree that the bill, which has already passed Congress, would be one of the most far-reaching federal interventions in election administration in recent years.

But that’s all they agree on.

Here’s what we know:

What does this bill do?

The Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE America) passed the Republican-led House of Representatives on February 11, but faces a precarious future in the Senate. An earlier version failed to gain support in both chambers last year. This latest iteration builds on the 2024 version by adding voter ID provisions and would need 60 votes to pass.

Supporters, including Mr. Trump and Republican lawmakers, say the bill would limit voter registration to U.S. citizens, require photo voter ID in federal elections and force states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls.

Why are Democrats and voting rights groups opposed to it?

The bill has raised alarm among Democrats, voting rights groups and election law experts who say it would potentially disenfranchise millions of Americans by making it harder to register and vote.

The bill would create new rules for voting by mail, which opponents say would favor Republicans, who are less likely to vote by mail, such as requiring proof of citizenship to register and vote in federal elections.

Another concern is that married people who change their last name may have a harder time proving they are eligible to vote because the name on their proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate) may not match the name on a photo ID such as a driver’s license.

Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Democrats also oppose the “draconian” bill because it would require all states to hand over their voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security and could be misused.

Aguilar said on February 11 that “the last thing Americans want is for their voter information to be turned over to DHS.”

Fact-checking of President Trump’s claims such as 89% approval rating for the Democratic Party

Trump has long argued that Democrats want to bypass strict voter ID protections because they want to allow illegal immigrants to vote. The Democratic Party strongly denies that.

Studies show that there is very little fraud in U.S. elections and that fraudulent votes do not change the outcome. A study by New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice found that out of 1 million voters, only three votes were fraudulent.

President Trump also said that these requirements are “supported by 89% of Americans, including Democrats.”

The White House did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment on Trump’s remarks, including which polls he cited.

However, President Trump has previously cited an August Pew Research Center poll that found 83% of American adults support requiring voters to present a government-issued photo ID to vote, including 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans.

Amy Sherman of the Poynter Institute’s Nonpartisan Politifact Fact-Checking Research Center said years of research shows widespread support for voter ID.

But surveys typically don’t capture nuance, she says, and often present voter ID as a “yes” or “no” option.

For example, Sherman said in PolitiFact’s analysis of President Trump’s speech that the Pew survey asked people whether they supported “requiring all voters to present a government-issued photo ID to vote.”

“I was not asked whether I supported the SAVE America Act’s requirement that mail-in voters submit a copy of their ID with their mail-in ballot,” Sherman said. He said the inquiry also did not ask about documentary proof of citizenship requirements set out in the law.

Most states already have some form of voter ID requirement. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, a nonpartisan, independent agency created by Congress in 1957, found in a September 2018 report that states across the country have enacted voting procedures that “unfairly prevent some citizens from voting and have a disparate impact on voters of color and poor citizens.”

People of color and low-income Americans are less likely to have a driver’s license at their current address. This disparity has partisan implications. A 2024 study by the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement found that 23% of Democrats do not have a license under their current name or address, compared to 16% of Republicans.

Next is here

On February 23, 80 prominent conservative groups signed on to the SAVE America Act Coalition, urging Thune to immediately bring the bill to the floor for consideration by the full Senate.

Conservative groups including Citizens United and the Election Integrity Network said in a letter that Thune should implement a “verbal filibuster.” This is a strategy to get Democrats to debate the bill on the Senate floor and “tell the American people why we oppose these important election integrity measures.”

Thune told Fox News anchor Aisha Husney on Feb. 25 that he supports the bill and hopes to introduce it. please come vote.

“We’re in the middle of a government shutdown right now, so we have to try to get government offices reopened first,” Thune said. “But in due course, we will bring it to the floor and we will vote on it.”

Thune described the bill and broader election integrity issues as “a stark contrast between Republicans and Democrats in how they want to handle elections in this country. … If I were to run as a Democrat in the November midterm elections, this would be a problem. I wouldn’t have to defend it.”

Four killed in Florida speedboat fire in Cuban waters, Cuba says

Cuba said four people were killed and six injured on the Florida-registered vessel. Florida Attorney General James Usmeyer has vowed to investigate the incident.

play

According to the Cuban embassy in the United States, the U.S.-registered speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters on February 25, after which a gunfight with Cuban government forces killed all four people on board.

The Cuban embassy said in a statement that the crew opened fire on Cuban Interior Ministry troops as they approached the U.S. ship. Four people were killed and six injured on the Florida-registered vessel. Cuba said the captain of the Interior Ministry ship was injured.

“In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban state in defending its sovereignty and ensuring regional stability,” Cuban authorities said. “The investigation by the competent authorities continues to fully clarify the incident.”

The injured speedboat crew members were evacuated for medical assistance, Cuban officials said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at an afternoon briefing that the United States would conduct its own investigation into the incident.

“There are good reasons why we want our own information. Those of us who live in the United States do not typically make decisions based on information from the Cuban government,” Rubio said, adding that he wanted to confirm whether the people involved were American citizens. “Suffice it to say, it is highly unusual for a gunfight to occur on the open sea like that.”

Rubio’s comments came hours after Florida Attorney General James Usmayer promised an investigation.

“I have directed the statewide prosecutor’s office to begin an investigation in collaboration with our federal, state, and law enforcement partners,” Usmayer said in a statement. “The Cuban government cannot be trusted. We will do everything in our power to hold the communists accountable.”

Vice President J.D. Vance said he had been briefed on the incident by Mr. Rubio.

“We don’t know many details,” Vance told reporters. “We hope it’s not as bad as we fear, but we don’t know any more so we can’t say any more.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House and State Department for comment.

‘We need a full investigation’: Florida leaders react

Florida lawmakers immediately reacted to the incident and called for an investigation.

In a statement, Rep. Carlos A. Jimenez (R-Fla.) called the incident a “genocide” and called for “an investigation to determine whether any of the victims were U.S. citizens or legal residents and establish exactly what happened.”

“The Cuban regime must be relegated to the dustbin of history for its countless crimes against humanity,” Jimenez said.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) joined Jimenez in calling for an investigation.

“This extremely disturbing situation requires a thorough investigation to determine what happened,” Scott said in a statement. The communist Cuban regime must be held accountable!

Where did the incident occur?

According to Cuban authorities, the gunfire erupted as the Florida-registered vessel approached one nautical mile northeast of El Pino Strait in Cayo Falcones, Coralillo, Villa Clara state.

Why are tensions rising between Cuba and the United States?

The incident comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Cuba.

Cuba faces a fuel crisis that has worsened after the United States detained President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela, a longtime ally of Cuba, and blocked oil shipments from the country. President Donald Trump announced in January a plan for U.S. companies to control and sell Venezuelan oil on its behalf.

On January 11, President Trump told Cuba they needed to reach an agreement in a post on his social media site Truth Social.

“No more oil, no more money coming to Cuba – zero! I strongly suggest that we reach a deal before it’s too late,” Trump said, without elaborating at the time what that deal would look like.

Cuba’s statement may have referenced this, saying: “In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to defend its territorial waters and defend its sovereignty.”

Lamborghini scraps EV plan and shifts focus to hybrid vehicles

0

The legendary Italian automaker has confirmed to USA TODAY that it no longer has plans to produce battery electric vehicles by 2030.

play

  • Lamborghini is shifting its focus from fully electric cars to plug-in hybrids.
  • The company cited slowing demand for battery electric vehicles in the luxury sports car market.
  • The next-generation Urus, which will be released in 2029, will be a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle.

Lamborghini will abandon plans to develop a fully electric car by the end of 2010 in favor of hybrid vehicle development.

The Italian automaker, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, confirmed to USA TODAY that it will not follow through with its plan to produce battery electric vehicles by 2030 due to declining demand in the United States.

“The original roadmap envisaged introducing a fully electric Urus by the end of 2010, followed by a fourth fully electric model line,” the company said in a statement. “However, after extensive analysis and ongoing dialogue with dealers and customers, it has become clear that the pace of adoption of pure BEV vehicles has slowed significantly, particularly in the premium supersport segment where demand remains very limited.”

“Given these considerations, the product strategy has been refined,” Lamborghini’s statement continued. “We have already announced that the next-generation Urus, scheduled to be released in 2029, will be introduced as a plug-in hybrid. Similarly, the fourth model line will also debut as a plug-in hybrid.”

Why is Lamborghini shifting its focus to hybrids?

“From a technological point of view, Lamborghini is well prepared for full electrification, but the market within this segment is not yet ready for this transition,” Lamborghini said in a statement.

The company said: “Hybrid technology is currently the most appropriate solution for the brand, combining the emotional performance that defines Lamborghini’s DNA with meaningful CO2 reduction.”

Lamborghini said: “While our product roadmap is evolving, our commitment to decarbonization remains the same.”

How many electric cars are sold in the United States?

According to Cox Automotive, automakers sold more than 1.3 million electric vehicles in the U.S. in 2025.

Tesla was the best-selling electric car brand in the United States last year, selling 589,160 plug-in models domestically. Volkswagen, Lamborghini’s parent company, sold 28,513 electric cars in 2025.

Volkswagen’s best-selling EV last year was the ID.4, with sales of 22,373 units in 2025.

How many hybrid cars are sold in the United States?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 22% of light vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2025 will be hybrids, battery electric vehicles, or plug-in hybrids, up from 20% in 2024.

“Among these categories, hybrid electric vehicles continue to increase their market share, while battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles have declined,” the agency said.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, automakers sold 1.6 million hybrid vehicles in 2024, compared to 321,000 plug-in hybrids and 1.2 million fully electric vehicles.

President Trump’s State of the Union address, criminal claims, fact-checked

0

play

President Donald Trump touted the nation’s declining crime rate in a marathon State of the Union address and celebrated the “huge success” of deploying the National Guard to American cities.

President Trump said he inherited a country plagued by a “crime epidemic” when he took office in 2025, but that his administration has since achieved a “turnaround for the better.”

In the United States, violent crime overall has been on the decline since peaking in the 1990s. Violence spiked late in President Trump’s first term when the COVID-19 pandemic began, but began to recede during President Joe Biden’s tenure.

“I’m not sure I fully agree with this framework,” Jeff Asher, co-founder of data analytics firm AH Datalytics, said of Trump’s comments on crime. “And I think a lot of the comments are inaccurate and probably lack the context of what’s actually happening in terms of crime trends in the country beyond 2023.”

Homicide rate is expected to decrease

President Trump said that in 2025, “the murder rate will record the largest decline in recorded history” and “the lowest rate in more than 125 years, since 1900.”

The number of homicides in the 35 largest U.S. cities decreased by 21% from 2024 to 2025, according to a January report from the Council on Criminal Justice.

If future FBI data records a similar decline, the national homicide rate in 2025 would fall to about 4 homicides per 100,000 residents, which would be both the largest single-year decline in homicides and the lowest homicide rate recorded since 1900.

Adam Gelb, president and CEO of the Criminal Justice Council, said he cannot confirm whether the murder rate has reached this historic low until the FBI releases the data. Gelb said that while it is “hardly surprising” that President Trump was blamed for the economic downturn, the drivers of this trend “are not easily explained.”

“We’re seeing major changes in criminal justice policies and programs, major advances in crime-fighting technology, and major social, economic, and cultural changes,” all of which may be contributing, Gelb said.

Was the National Guard deployment a “huge success”?

President Trump said he had deployed the National Guard and federal law enforcement “to restore law and order to the most dangerous cities,” with “great successes” in Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans.

The Memphis Safety Task Force, made up of the National Guard and 12 federal agencies, arrived in the city in late September at the direction of President Trump. The city’s Safer Communities Dashboard shows crime numbers are down since the summer, dropping from 3,640 in July to 1,687 so far in February.

Asher said it could be argued that federal law enforcement presence contributed to the already precipitous decline in Memphis, but “certainly not in New Orleans. 100% no.”

Like many other cities, New Orleans, where Usher is based, is expected to see a decline in crime by 2025. Officials recently celebrated the city’s homicide rate reaching its lowest level in 50 years.

“None of that decline had anything to do with the small National Guard presence in the French Quarter, where there is very little crime,” Asher said.

Is there “almost no crime anymore” in Washington DC?

President Trump also made specific claims about Washington, D.C., where he deployed the National Guard to fight crime in August, saying there is “almost no crime anymore” in the city.

“In fact, crime in Washington is currently at an all-time low, with homicides in Washington, D.C., dropping by nearly 100 percent in January compared to a year ago,” Trump said.

The total number of violent crimes in the area will drop to the lowest level in more than 30 years in 2024, authorities said. According to data released by the Metropolitan Police Department, the number of violent crimes will decrease by about 28% in 2025. As of 2026, 290 violent crimes have occurred.

According to police data, there were 10 murders in the city in January 2025 and two in January 2026, an 80% decrease. Latest data shows murders are down 63% compared to this time last year.

Usher said the department’s website may be exaggerating the decline in violent crime compared to data reported to the FBI, but said the trend is likely occurring. But the cause of this decline is not entirely clear, he says.

“It’s very difficult to parse the impact of federal deployment to D.C. because it’s a city that was already in significant decline,” Asher said.

Jennifer Garner opens up about ‘loss’ of co-parenting with Ben Affleck

play

Jennifer Garner shares a rare inside look at how she and ex-husband Ben Affleck manage co-parenting.

In a new interview with Bustle, the “13 Going on 30” actress opened up about raising her family in “two separate households.” Affleck and Garner are both 53 years old and have three children, Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13. The two got married in 2005, but separated in 2018 after more than 10 years of marriage.

“I’m going to be mom and dad and he’s going to be dad and mom,” she told the outlet in an interview published Tuesday. “That can’t be helped, right? Because there’s no benefit to having both yin and yang living in the same house. So when raising a child, you have to incorporate a little bit of both.”

“There’s a little bit of a loss with that,” she told the outlet. “But there’s something to be gained from it.” Garner, who began dating businessman John C. Miller, said in a separate interview earlier this year that she was struggling with the gossip that dominated the tabloids after her breakup with Affleck.

“You have to be smart about what you can and cannot handle. And I couldn’t handle what was there. But what was there wasn’t difficult,” the actress told Marie Claire UK in January.

The “Last Thing He Told Me” star went on to say, “It was really hard to see my family break up. It was hard to lose that real partnership and friendship.”

Affleck later married and divorced Jennifer Lopez. He and Lopez originally met while working on the romantic comedy Gigli and got engaged in 2002, but called off their wedding in 2003 due to excessive media attention. The two have since married and broken up, with Lopez marrying Marc Anthony in 2004 and Affleck marrying Garner. Lopez also got engaged to Alex Rodriguez in 2019, but they didn’t end up getting married.

Nearly 20 years after their breakup, Affleck and Lopez rekindled their relationship in 2021 and married the following year. But in 2024, the “Jenny from the Block” singer filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles Superior Court on their second wedding anniversary. Their divorce was finalized in January 2025.

Stellantis name pronunciation sparks debate

0

play

  • Many people may still refer to Stellantis as Chrysler, but the company’s official name has many different pronunciations.
  • Some use a soft “a” vowel in the middle. Some people use the hard “a” sound. Some, like former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, change the emphasis at the end of their words.
  • So the Free Press asked Stellantis, “How should you pronounce your name?” Even they didn’t want to solve the problem.

There are many important questions to ask about the auto industry, but there’s one minor (albeit confusing) question to ask about Stellantis. I mean, how on earth do you pronounce that name?

The company, which was first founded nearly five years ago, is the international parent company for major players in the U.S. auto industry, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, as well as several European nameplates, including Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel and Maserati.

Some people in the Motor City still call it Chrysler. Some people call it Jeep’s parent company. But when it comes to the entire company that makes the third division of the Detroit Three automakers, there’s still no consensus on that pesky vowel in the middle.

Are you a steal?-Anne-Is it Stell?Ann-? The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, told those who might know and found some answers.

What do people call “Stellantis”?

Perhaps the most authoritative voice on the pronunciation of Stellantis is the company’s CEO, Antonio Filosa.

In interviews, speeches, and statements, Filosa has spoken of the more general “Stell-Ann-tis” pronunciation. This helps, but it complicates things because Filosa is a native Italian, speaks several languages, and leads a company from metro Detroit. The country you speak in, or where you’re from, seems to influence how you pronounce it here, but Filosa is kicking that trend.

Many Europeans use the softer “Stell”.-Anne-tis” pronunciation.

For example, the host of France 24, a French-language public news program in English, uses soft pronunciation. In the same corner, a correspondent on the scene uses a hard pronunciation.

In the United States, President Donald Trump received a hard A “Stell-AnnAccording to a review of recordings of presidents using this name, pronounced “-tis”. Former President Joe Biden also uses a more common pronunciation. Up north, Lana Payne, president of Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, also pronounces it “stel-“.Ann-is. ”

However, some other prominent car names have different pronunciations of the brand name.

Sean Fein, president of the United Auto Workers union, also uses this hard vowel. However, Fein has added his own interpretation by omitting most of the “T” sounds and saying things like “stellanis.”

Former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, the man behind the company’s 2021 vision, also uses hard vowels; 4th It is pronounced differently, emphasizing the final “I” and pronounced as “Stell-ann-“.tea. ”

After a variety of interpretations of the name came from CEOs, union leaders, company presidents, and reporters, the Free Press asked the company directly. “How do you pronounce Stellantis?”

Alas, even Stellantis cannot solve this problem.

According to Jody Tinson, director of corporate communications for Stellantis, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to names.

“If you say Stel-LAN-tis, Stel-ANN-tis, or add your own flair, we’re fine with that. As long as you’re talking about Stellantis, you’re saying it right,” she wrote.

Judge says Trump administration cannot search WaPo reporters’ devices

0

play

  • The FBI raided the home of reporter Hanna Natanson on January 14 as part of an investigation into government contractor Aurelio Pérez-Lugones, who was accused of illegally storing classified documents.
  • Judge William Porter’s Feb. 24 order said the court, not the federal government, will review the seized equipment and determine what, if any, content is relevant to the breach investigation.
  • Press freedom advocates welcomed the ruling on the government’s efforts to search the equipment, but criticized it for not ordering the return of Natanson’s property.

A federal judge has barred President Donald Trump’s administration from investigating materials seized by the FBI during a raid on a Washington Post reporter’s Virginia home in January as part of a national security breach investigation.

The agency executed a search warrant at the home of reporter Hanna Natanson on January 14 as part of an investigation into Aurelio Pérez-Lugones, a government contractor accused of illegally storing classified documents. Items including phones and both work and personal laptops were seized during the search.

Judge William Porter’s Feb. 24 order said the court will review the documents to determine what, if any, is relevant to the leak investigation.

Allowing the government to do so, Porter wrote, “is the equivalent of putting the government fox in charge of the Washington Post chicken coop.”

He did not order the materials returned to Natanson.

“We applaud the court’s recognition of core First Amendment protections and its rejection of the government’s expansionist argument that it placed the burden on itself to fully investigate Hannah Natanson’s devices and works and determine their relevance,” the Washington Post said in a Feb. 24 statement posted to X.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

“These are not easy problems.”

Porter’s order cited tensions that can exist between news organizations and the federal government, as the two parties sometimes have competing interests in holding elected officials accountable and maintaining national security.

“These are not easy issues,” he said.

Porter noted that the plaintiffs’ “First Amendment rights have been limited” through this issue, but added that the U.S. Supreme Court “has never granted news organizations absolute immunity from legal constraints.”

He also criticized the government for failing to cite the 1980 Privacy Act, which generally requires a subpoena to obtain a journalist’s work, when applying for a search warrant.

“This omission seriously undermined the court’s confidence in the government’s disclosures in this case,” he wrote.

Both orders are welcomed but criticized by press freedom advocates.

Gabe Lotman, vice president for policy at the Reporters Committee for a Free Press, said the omission “could cloud this case going forward.”

He said Mr Porter’s order against the government’s efforts to review the seized material was “the right decision” and “constitutionally appropriate.”

Seth Stern, advocacy director at the Press Freedom Foundation, said the order “didn’t go far enough.”

He would have wanted the government to return Mr. Natanson’s property, citing a lack of evidence that Mr. Porter had material that threatened national security.

The Trump administration “even more so than any other administration, has a long track record of falsely claiming national security threats to protect against embarrassment and advance a political agenda,” he said.

A status meeting is scheduled for March 4th.

Buc-ee’s sues Mickey Mart for logo and trademark infringement

Buc-ee’s said in court documents that Mickey Mart’s smiling moose logo closely resembles its own logo and could confuse consumers.

play

Buc-ee’s is suing yet another convenience store, this time in Ohio, over a cheerful mascot that the Travel Stop giant claims is too similar to its own convenience store.

On February 18, Buc-ee’s filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio against Coles IP Holdings, LLC, which owns the Mickey Mart convenience store and gas station chain in Ohio. Buc-ee’s is suing for trademark infringement and unfair competition. Buc-ee’s is also seeking cancellation of Coles IP Holdings’ trademark registration, a process that began in August 2025, according to court documents.

Mickey Mart has about 42 stores in Ohio and has a logo featuring a smiling cartoon moose inside a red hexagon, according to its website. Buc-ee’s claims in court documents that the animal-like logo closely resembles its own logo: a toothy beaver wearing a red ball cap inside a bright yellow circle. Buc-ee’s said in court documents that both animals were facing to the right, showing large eyes and smiling faces.

Travel center says ownership name is too close to Buc-ee

In addition to the logo, Buc-ee’s alleges in court documents that Mickey Mart has transitioned its store, signage and online branding to “Mickey’s,” which is “very similar” to Buc-ee’s trademark.

“[Mickey Mart’s]unauthorized use of[Buc-ee’s]logo is likely to cause confusion among consumers,” Buc-ee said in court documents. “Consumers are likely to perceive a connection or connection regarding the origin, sponsorship, or affiliation of the parties’ products or services, even if none actually exists, given the similarities in the parties’ logos, trade channels, and consumer bases.”

Neither Buc-ee’s nor Mickey Mart were immediately available for comment about the lawsuit when contacted by USA TODAY on Feb. 25.

This isn’t the first time the Buc-ee’s have filed a lawsuit over their likeness.

Historically, Buc-ee’s has aggressively jumped on convenience stores that feature cheerful animal mascots, arguing that the similarities can cause confusion among consumers who think Buc-ee’s is associated with smaller, often local or regional chains. Here are some of the companies Buc-ee’s has sued over the years:

May 2025: Born as United in South Carolina, Owl & Anchor in Arizona, and Prometheus esoterica in Florida.

Unlike most lawsuits, which tend to involve convenience stores, Buc-ee’s sued three apparel brands in May 2025: South Carolina conservative apparel brand Born United, Arizona-based Owl & Anchor, and Florida-based queer apparel brand Prometheus Esoterica. As of February 25, three cases remain unresolved.

In court documents, Buc-ee’s claimed that Bourne United used the popular Beaver mascot, titled “Tac-Bucc,” who wears military uniform and carries a gun, in some of its designs. As of February 25th, Tac-Bucc products were not available on the Born United website.

In its lawsuit against Owl & Anchor, Buc-ee’s alleges similarities in the brand’s use of the beaver mascot in various product designs, including stickers. Owl & Anchor filed for bankruptcy in August 2025, according to court documents.

Finally, Buc-ee’s sued Orlando-based Prometheus Esoterica for similar trademark infringement, alleging that the store used the Beaver mascot on T-shirts and stickers without permission. As of February 25, the Buc-ee-centered design was not listed on Prometheus Esoterica’s website.

April 2025: Barc-ee’s in Marshfield, Missouri

In April 2025, Buc-ee’s filed a federal lawsuit against Barc-ee’s, a company that provides dog parks, coffee shops, grocery stores, and Western-themed miniature cities in southwest Missouri. Buc-ee’s claims that the Barc-ee logo, which features a smiling dog in a car, closely resembles Buc-ee’s image, and some Buc-ee products also feature the iconic beaver inside a car. January 2025: Super Fuels of North Texas

The lawsuit was dismissed by a Missouri judge in October 2025, according to court documents.

July 2023: Buk-II Super Mercado in Mexico

In July 2023, an image of a Mexican convenience store called Super Marcado in Buk-II went viral on social media as a humorous reproduction of Buc-ee’s iconic logo. Buc-ee threatened legal action, but nothing was done.

President Trump addresses car affordability in State of the Union address

0

play

  • President Trump claimed in his State of the Union address that car prices are lower now than when he took office.
  • The average price of a new car rose from $48,641 to $49,191 in the first year of the second period, according to Kelley Blue Book data.
  • President Trump emphasized that he signed a bill that makes auto loan interest on American-made cars tax deductible.

President Donald Trump spoke briefly about his plan to address auto affordability during his February 24 State of the Union address, addressing Americans’ concerns about rising prices.

“The cost of things like chicken, butter, fruit, hotels, cars, rent, etc. are much lower now than they were when I took office,” Trump said in a roughly two-hour speech. “And even beef, which was very expensive, is starting to come down significantly. Hold on, we’re going to bring it down. And very soon you’re going to see numbers that most people didn’t think were achievable just a short while ago.”

President Trump blamed Democrats for the higher costs, saying policies supported by Democrats under former President Joe Biden were responsible for the hefty price tags Americans are seeing at car dealerships elsewhere, even as he claimed credit for the price declines.

“The same people in this chamber who voted for that disaster suddenly used the word affordability, knowing full well that they were just using it because someone gave it to them, and that it created the price increases that all of us had to endure.”

Have car prices gone down or gone up during President Trump’s term?

According to Kelley Blue Book, when Trump took office for a second time in January 2025, the average price of a new car was $48,641. The average price of a new car reached $49,191 in January 2026, according to Kelley Blue Book.

The average monthly car transaction prices during President Trump’s second term are as follows.

  • December 2025: $50,362
  • November 2025: $49,814
  • October 2025: $49,766
  • September 2025: $50,080
  • August 2025: $49,077
  • July 2025: $48,841
  • June 2025: $48,907
  • May 2025: $48,799
  • April 2025: $48,699
  • March 2025: $47,462
  • February 2025: $48,039
  • January 2025: $48,641

What else did President Trump say about cars at the State of the Union?

President Trump touted during his State of the Union address that he had signed a bill in his first year in office that would make interest on car loans tax deductible.

“Last year, I urged this Congress to begin that mission by passing the largest tax cut bill in American history, and the Republican majority did just that,” President Trump said, referring to his signature bill, which he called “One Big Beautiful Bill” and was passed in the summer of 2025.

President Trump continued, “Democrats, all of you voted against these really important and very necessary massive tax cuts.” “They instead wanted massive tax increases to hurt our people. But we stood firm, and with the great Big Beautiful Act, we waived the tip tax, the overtime tax, and the Social Security tax for our great seniors. And for the first time, we made interest on car loans tax deductible, but only if the car was made in America.”

Trump also tied his immigration policy to auto insurance prices during his speech, blaming Somali immigrants in Minnesota who have been targeted by his administration in recent months for sticker price hikes.

“The Somali pirates who plundered Minnesota were a reminder that there are parts of the world where bribery, corruption, and illegal activity are the norm, not the exception,” Trump said. “Importing these cultures through unrestricted immigration and open borders creates problems right here in the United States. And it is Americans who are paying the price in high medical bills, car insurance, rent, taxes, and perhaps most importantly, crime. We will address this problem.”

President Trump also emphasized that gas prices are “on average below $2.30 a gallon in most states,” compared to the national average price of $2.91 for a gallon of gas as of February 24, according to a report from the AAA Automobile Club.

“Gasoline prices, which peaked under my predecessor in excess of $6 a gallon in some states and were, frankly, a disaster, are now below $2.30 a gallon in most states and $1.99 a gallon in some areas,” President Trump said. “And just a few weeks ago, when I visited the great state of Iowa, I saw gas prices at $1.85 a gallon, the lowest price in four years, and falling rapidly.”

According to AAA, the average gas price in Iowa as of Feb. 24 was $2.55.

Larry Summers resigns from Harvard University over ties to Epstein

Former Treasury Secretary and Harvard University President Larry Summers will retire from his teaching position at the end of the school year, a Harvard University spokesperson told USA TODAY.

play

Former Treasury Secretary and former Harvard University President Larry Summers will retire from his teaching position at the end of the school year, a Harvard University spokesperson told USA TODAY.

The Feb. 25 announcement comes more than three months after the Justice Department revealed the longtime economist’s relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“In connection with the university’s ongoing investigation of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein recently released by the government, Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein has accepted Professor Lawrence H. Summers’ resignation from his leadership position as co-director of the Mosavar Rahmani Center for Business and Government,” Harvard University spokesperson Jason Newton said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY.

Summers has also resigned from his academic and teaching appointments and will remain on leave through the end of the school year, Newton added.

The university said he will not be teaching or taking on any new advisory positions.

In a Feb. 25 statement to the Harvard Crimson student newspaper, Summers wrote that the decision to withdraw was “difficult.”

“I remain grateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have had the privilege of teaching and working with since I came to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago,” Summers said.

Summers added, “I look forward to being relieved of my formal responsibilities and eventually engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a wide range of global economic issues as president emeritus and former professor.”

In November, Summers told the Harvard Crimson, the campus newspaper, that he was stepping back from public life to repair personal ties after the House Oversight Committee released documents showing Summers’ relationships with disgraced investors.

The documents included emails showing that Summers, who was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006, asked Epstein for relationship advice in 2019.

Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was ruled a suicide, but is believed to have sexually abused hundreds of women and girls and trafficked them to other wealthy men.

In a statement dated Nov. 18, 2025, Summers told The Crimson that he was “deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they caused,” and that he “takes full responsibility for my poor decision to continue to communicate with Mr. Epstein.”

Casey Means named Trump Surgeon General on vaccines and autism

0

It didn’t take long for vaccines to come up during confirmation hearings for Surgeon General candidate Dr. Casey Means.

During a Feb. 25 hearing (which is still ongoing), members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee harshly criticized Means’ views on vaccines related to measles, influenza, and autism.

In a series of questions, the committee’s chairman, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), focused on the ongoing measles outbreak in the United States.

“Could you encourage other mothers to get their children vaccinated against measles with the MMR vaccine?” asked Cassidy, who is also a doctor.

“We believe vaccines save lives. We believe vaccines are an important part of any infectious disease public health strategy,” Means said.

When asked specifically if Cassidy would encourage the MMR vaccine, Means said, “I support vaccination. I believe that each patient, each mother, each parent should have a conversation with their pediatrician about the drugs they are putting in their bodies and their children’s bodies.”

When asked a similar question about the flu vaccine, Means reiterated that he wants patients to have “informed consent with their doctor before taking any medication,” adding that informed consent is “part of building trust in public health.”

The current Ministry of Health also supports the idea of informed consent. For example, in recent changes to the childhood immunization schedule, HHS officials withdrew outright recommendations for certain vaccines and instead moved to shared decision-making between parents and health care providers.

Both Cassidy and Sen. Bernie Sanders also asked whether they thought vaccines cause autism.

“The reality is that the autism crisis is on the rise, and it’s having a devastating impact on many families. As a medical community, we don’t know what causes autism,” Means told Cassidy. “I don’t think we should leave anything out until we have a clear understanding of why children are developing this disease at such high rates.”

Many public health groups and doctors across the country have condemned recent changes to language on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website suggesting that vaccines may be linked to autism, despite decades of evidence that vaccines are safe.

Cassidy added that there was “a lot of evidence” that the vaccine was not involved. “Would you not accept that evidence?” he asked the candidate.

“I accept that evidence,” she replied, but added that “the science is never settled” and that it is important to continue investigating what causes autism.

In response to Sanders’ question about vaccines and autism, Means said, “Anti-vaccine rhetoric was not part of my message.”

“I’m not here to complicate the vaccine issue,” she said. “I think it’s important to keep that on the table.”

The idea of re-studying the potential link between vaccines and autism echoes the long-standing sentiment of Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ordered HHS to uncover the causes of autism.

Means, who was nominated by President Donald Trump to be Surgeon General, was originally scheduled to testify before the HELP Committee in October, but the hearing was postponed after she began labor around that time.

The New York Times previously reported that some of her positions have drawn criticism of her presidential candidacy, including past comments raising skepticism about vaccines.

If confirmed, Means would become the nation’s top physician to lead the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Force, or USPHS Commissioned Force.

What does the Surgeon General do?

The Surgeon General is considered the “nation’s physician,” and his role is to provide Americans with “the best available scientific information on how to improve their health and reduce their risk of illness and injury,” according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Surgeon General’s website adds, “The Surgeon General provides the public with the best available scientific information by issuing Surgeon General recommendations, calls to action, and reports on critical issues and by communicating directly with the public through many communication channels.”

Vivek Murthy previously served as the 19th and 21st Surgeon General under President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama.

Who is Casey Means?

Mr. Means is a Stanford University-educated physician and New York Times bestselling author with a large online following, and has achieved influencer status in certain online wellness fields with a focus on metabolic health and chronic disease prevention. She is also an ally of Department of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a proponent of the MAHA or “Make America Healthy Again” policy.

Means graduated from Stanford Medical School and continued his surgical training as an otolaryngologist (often referred to as an otolaryngologist). However, she left the training program in 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile. Her medical license expired in 2019.

She went on to found Levels, a technology company that monitors blood sugar levels.

This story will be updated as the hearing continues.

Bill Gates admits extramarital affair and apologizes for relationship with Epstein, WSJ report

0

play

The organization said in a statement that Bill Gates “accepted responsibility for his actions” during a town hall meeting with Gates Foundation officials regarding his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Gates answered questions on a variety of issues “including the release of the Epstein files,” according to the foundation, at its biannual meeting on February 24. “At City Hall, Bill spoke frankly, answered several questions in detail, and took responsibility for his actions,” the foundation said.

The statement was in response to a Wall Street Journal report that Gates had apologized to staff at the event venue over his relationship with Epstein.

Documents released by the Justice Department show that Gates and Epstein met repeatedly to discuss expanding the Microsoft founder’s philanthropy. The meeting took place after Epstein was sentenced to 13 months in prison in 2009 on state charges of pimping a minor in Florida. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while in custody on federal charges of sex trafficking underage girls.

The Journal reported that Gates told his staff that spending time with Epstein and inviting Gates Foundation executives to meet with the sex offender was a big mistake. The report cited a recording of Gates’ comments at City Hall.

“I apologize to the others who were caught up in this situation because of the mistakes I made,” he said, according to the newspaper.

The paper also said Gates later admitted to two extramarital affairs with Russian women discovered by Epstein, but that none of them involved Epstein’s victims.

“I didn’t do anything illegal. I didn’t see anything illegal,” Gates told staff, according to the report.

The Justice Department’s criminal investigation into Epstein documents released includes photos of the Microsoft founder posing with women whose faces have been suppressed. Mr. Gates said his relationship with Mr. Epstein was limited to philanthropy-related discussions and acknowledged that meeting with Mr. Epstein was a mistake.

The paper said Gates told foundation staff that the images were photos that Epstein had asked him to take with Epstein’s assistants after the meeting.

“To be clear, I have never spent any time with the victim or any of the women around her,” Gates added, according to the report.

Other documents show that Epstein tried to mediate a rift between Gates and his adviser Boris Nikolic in 2013. Epstein said in an email to himself that Gates and his inner circle had abused him despite their friendship, which was so close that Gates once asked for antibiotics to treat a sexually transmitted disease he contracted from a “Russian girl.”

His ex-wife Melinda French Gates announced their divorce in 2021 after 27 years of marriage. She left the Gates Foundation in 2024.

“Whatever questions remain about what I don’t know, I can’t even begin to know them all. Those questions are directed at those people, even my ex-husband. They are the ones who need to answer those things, not me,” French Gates said on the Feb. 5 episode of NPR’s “Wild Cards” podcast.

The Gates Foundation said in early February that it did not pay or employ Epstein in any way.

The billionaire canceled his plans to attend India’s AI Impact Summit hours before his scheduled February 19 keynote address.

The Gates Foundation, chaired by Mr. Gates and founded in 2000 by Mr. Gates and his then-wife, is one of the world’s largest funders of global health efforts.

This 2026 Genesis GV70 review proves it’s the new luxury benchmark

0

Watch out for BMW and Mercedes. The new kid on the block is sneakier than you might think.

play

  • The GV70’s interior uses high-quality materials, giving it a luxurious feel that rivals its German rivals.
  • Automotive experts praise the GV70 for its performance and overall value in the small luxury SUV class.

Genesis, the luxury brand of South Korean automaker Hyundai, produces competitive models in multiple segments and competes with luxury car giants such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Genesis became an independent luxury brand in 2015, and in just over a decade, it has made great strides in the luxury car space.

Known for its affordable price and superior performance specifications, Genesis outperforms competitors with a long production history in multiple vehicle segments. USA TODAY Cars got behind the wheel of a GV70 to see if it really deserves such high praise.

What makes the 2026 Genesis GV70 stand out?

The GV70 stands out in this segment due to its affordable price compared to its competitors. The Genesis small luxury SUV is one of the few models in its segment that sells for less than the average new price of approximately $50,000. Additionally, the base engine is very powerful and the SUV’s interior is luxurious for the price.

Between the high-quality synthetic leather and premium cabin materials, the GV70 feels like a Benz or Bimmer as a base model. Upper trims come standard with more technology and creature comforts while maintaining a reasonable price point for this segment. The GV70 proves that South Korea can produce luxury cars as appealing as those from the historic German automaker.

How does the Genesis GV70 drive?

Performance, usability and efficiency

The 2026 Genesis GV70 uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a powerful 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. It’s pretty powerful for its size, but also handles well.

South Korean luxury SUVs offer a smooth ride and quiet operation. It’s sporty enough to rival its German luxury rivals, and attractive enough to be enjoyed by driving enthusiasts. The GV70 gets 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

Will it fit your lifestyle?

Cargo, space and lifestyle

The Genesis compact luxury SUV measures 185.6 inches tall, 75.2 inches wide (without mirrors), and 64.2 inches tall. It seats 5 people.

The GV70 has 28.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Folding the rear seats provides 56.9 cubic feet of space.

Cabin space and size of this small luxury SUV are average for its segment. Rear seat legroom is adequate, but like most compact luxury SUVs, it’s not exactly spacious. The GV70 should suit your lifestyle if you have a small family or plan to travel regularly with two or three passengers.

Is the 2026 Genesis GV70 worth it?

price, value, competition

Pricing for the 2026 Genesis GV70 starts at $48,985. Offered in four trims.

2026 Genesis GV70 Trim

  • GV70 2.5T AWD: $48,985
  • GV70 2.5T Select AWD: $51,885
  • GV70 2.5T Advanced AWD: $56,435
  • GV70 2.5T Sport Prestige AWD: $59,795

The GV70 is reasonably priced for its segment, and its base model is packed with value. With standard all-wheel drive, an ultra-luxury interior, and a turbocharged four-cylinder, this model is a steal in this price range.

The Genesis small luxury SUV competes with strong rivals such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. “It delivers overall high performance and unparalleled value in the small luxury SUV class,” Edmunds said. Automotive sites rank the GV70 higher than the X3 and GLC.

The GV70 produces more horsepower than the BMW X3 (255 hp) and Mercedes-Benz GLC (255 hp). U.S. News & World Report also ranks the GV70 above its competitors, calling it “a killer deal next to its top European rivals.”

Who should buy the 2026 Genesis GV70?

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have such a long history with iconic vehicles that the Genesis brand still feels like a newcomer to the luxury field. If you’re looking to take on the newcomers that have been stirring up the rankings in recent years, the GV70 is worth it.

Its controls, software, and cabin give its design enough personality to differentiate it from its competitors. Moreover, its bold appearance attracts attention. If you’re looking for a value-oriented SUV with all the bells and whistles for this class, this model won’t disappoint.

“Ghostwriting” is a disturbing new dating trend. What is it?

0

The dating world is becoming more dire by the minute.

Just when you thought “ghosting” (disappearing without warning in front of the person you’re dating) was bad enough, a new trend that’s even worse has entered the zeitgeist. It’s called “ghostwriting.”

Essentially a toxic combination of “ghosting” and “gaslighting,” the ghostwriter will cut off all communication and then resume contact later as if nothing happened. Even worse, they often try to gaslight the person they were dating into believing that ghosting never existed in the first place.

“Instead of owning it, they ignore it like it’s no big deal and make excuses like, ‘You seemed so busy and I didn’t want to bother you,'” says dating expert Amy Cheung, author of “Unsingle: How to Date Smarter and Build Lasting Love,” which will be published in April 2026. Question your reality. ”

How romantic!

The problem of “ghostwriting”

Ghostwriting comes in many forms. That can happen if a ghost titer suddenly texts you. It can happen when they suddenly engage with your posts on social media. This can happen when someone subtly tries to get back into your DMs.

Typically, ghostwriters attempt to pick up exactly where they left off, unaware of the disappearance.

The rise of Ghostlighting is not surprising, says Chan. After all, thanks to dating apps and more people meeting online in general, daters tend to stay in limbo with each other for longer than ever before.

“A lot of connections exist in a gray area right now,” she says. “You’re texting. You’re seeing each other. But nothing is clearly defined. That ambiguity makes it easy for people to quit. And if someone can quit without consequences, they often do.”

Blaine Anderson, a dating coach for men, says the rise of ghostwriting has made it increasingly important to evaluate potential partners by their actions rather than their words. Will they show up? Are they communicating consistently? And if they don’t do either of these things, how will they react when you bring it up to them?

“Actions speak louder than words,” Anderson says. “Things happen. Maybe something happened in their personal life. Maybe they weren’t ready to date. But if they didn’t mention or apologize for the fact that they had disappeared before, I would pay attention to them. Because do you really want to be with someone who can do that again for no reason?”

Are you experiencing a “ghost light”? Here’s what you need to do:

Have you ever been a victim of ghostwriting? Well, it might not be a bad idea to call in Casper.

“If you’re being ghostwritten, don’t brush it off,” Chan says. “If someone disappears and then reappears, calmly name them: ‘When you stopped responding, I took it as a lack of interest and a lack of communication.’ Then, pause and see how they handle it.” Will they admit it and take responsibility? Or do we turn around and minimize it? ”

If they respond well, with a sincere apology and a valid explanation for their disappearance, you can consider whether it’s worth giving them another chance, Chan says.

But no matter what, don’t try to figure out why this person ghostlit you. Even worse, you may end up blaming yourself for their actions.

“If you psychoanalyze that person and try to figure out why they did what they did, you might go crazy,” Chan says. “What really helps is not solving the mystery, but allowing yourself to process the hurt. Acknowledge that you felt disrespected, that you were disappointed, that you wished something more respectful. The open loop closes not when you understand their actions, but when you accept what their actions showed and decide what you will and will not tolerate in the future.”

And if you’re a ghostwriter, take some responsibility.

“Be the change you want to see in the dating world,” says Anderson. “It often starts with having a high degree of integrity and communicating your feelings openly, honestly, and openly.”

Johnsonville and Keurig’s Dr. Pepper collaborate to launch “Carbonated Grizzly”

Introducing Dr. Pepper flavored sausage.

Johnsonville, “America’s favorite sausage,” and Keurig Dr. Pepper have teamed up to launch “Foam Grizzy.”

“Is it a culinary innovation or a sign of the apocalypse?” the Sheboygan Falls, Wis.-based national sausage brand said in a Feb. 25 press release. “That discussion has already begun, but one thing is for sure: people are talking and the United States is ready to add its bite to it.”

Johnsonville says the sausage is inspired by Keurig Dr. Pepper’s original 23-flavor blend.

Johnsonville worked closely with Dr. Pepper to bring the soda’s unique flavor to its venerable sausage. The idea was inspired by the brand’s long-standing role as an essential ingredient in seasoning and marinating meats.

“Johnsonville and Dr. Pepper are built for hangouts, and our data continues to show that people are connecting less,” Jamie Schmelzer, Johnsonville’s vice president of marketing, said in a statement. “So we got together and created something fun, unexpected, and maybe delicious?”

“Reaction to the idea of soda-flavored sausage has been a little polarized, but we’re hoping people will come together and try it and tell us what they think, whether they like it or not,” Schmelzer added.

Johnsonville and Keurig Dr. Pepper link up for “fizzy gizzy”

From Walmart to 7-Eleven, Johnsonville’s Dr. Pepper-style sausage will be on retail shelves (and roller grills) nationwide starting Sunday, March 1st.

Johnsonville’s Dr Pepper-style sausages are available in “fully cooked and uncooked varieties” and “enhance the richness of Johnsonville’s signature sausage, offering a nuanced sweet-salty or SWALTY-like finish.”

Johnsonville said the release of the Dr. Pepper-inspired sausage builds on the momentum of the brand’s Keep It Juicy platform, which was launched in 2024 to “win a sense of togetherness.”

Artemis 2 crew invited to Trump’s SOTU ahead of moon mission

The four astronauts selected for the Artemis 2 mission around the moon were invited to attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

Four astronauts will be guests at the State of the Union address as they fly around the moon on the first U.S. manned lunar spaceflight in more than 50 years.

NASA astronauts Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen were among those seated as President Donald Trump delivered a marathon speech on Tuesday, February 24. Although his nearly two-hour speech set a record for a State of the Union address, President Trump did not mention the Artemis 2 mission for which the astronauts were selected.

The mission, the second in NASA’s multibillion-dollar program to return astronauts to the moon, is expected to launch no later than April. Artemis 2 was originally scheduled to launch in February, but has faced a series of delays due to problems detected with the towering rocket meant to propel the astronauts forward.

President Trump has previously spoken of his desire to see a moon landing before the end of his second term. Artemis 2 will then send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon, and subsequent missions will help pave the way for future moon landings.

Here’s what you need to know about Artemis 2 and how the astronauts chosen for the mission ended up attending the State of the Union.

Artemis 2 astronauts attend President Trump’s State of the Union address

Wiseman, Glover, Koch and Hansen were guests of House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican representing Louisiana, during the 2026 State of the Union address. The four astronauts appeared in the House of Representatives chambers in Washington, D.C., wearing bright blue NASA jackets with mission patches.

The invitation was likely made at the last minute, as the astronauts were quarantined before launch to avoid exposure to the disease, before NASA notified them on Saturday, February 21, that the Artemis 2 launch would be postponed again.

Did President Trump mention the Artemis 2 moon mission in his SOTU speech?

President Trump did not specifically mention the Artemis 2 moon mission by name in his SOTU speech.

But President Trump has frequently emphasized the importance of America’s return to the moon amid a renewed space race with China to build a permanent lunar base at the south pole of Earth’s natural satellite. In fact, NASA’s Artemis program was established during his first term in 2017.

What is NASA’s Artemis mission?

NASA’s Artemis mission is NASA’s ambitious campaign to return Americans to the moon for the first time since the end of the Apollo era in 1972. Ultimately, Artemis mirrors NASA’s Moon-to-Mars approach to getting the first humans to Mars.

Over the next few years, NASA’s Operation Artemis aims to establish a lunar habitat in Antarctica and launch a series of crewed missions to establish a continued human presence on the moon. There, water ice, which is thought to be abundant in the region, could be extracted and used as a source of hydrogen and oxygen for drinking, breathing, and even rocket fuel.

Artemis 2’s astronauts will not land, but they will orbit the moon on a 10-day journey to test systems and hardware inside the Orion capsule in preparation for future expeditions to the surface. Later, Artemis 3 would land on the moon.

When is the Artemis 2 rocket launch date? What to know after the delay

The Artemis 2 mission will not break ground earlier than April after NASA postponed its launch again to resolve an issue with the upper stage of its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The State of the Union announcement came a day before NASA plans to lower the giant rocket from its launch pad, which has been in a vertical position since mid-January, to continue repairs.

The 322-foot-tall rocket will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, and provide the initial thrust that will send astronauts into the Orion capsule.
