Man charged with stealing $40,000 from Target using taco seasoning packets
A Florida man was arrested after allegedly stealing $40,000 worth of trading cards from Target in an orchestrated scheme using taco seasoning bags.
After numerous complaints, Del Taco is bringing back the original open-end burrito.
In an Instagram post shared on March 2, Del Taco announced the return of the “classic open-end folded burrito” after customers were dissatisfied with the neat burrito with folded ends. The “new” burrito will be introduced in August 2025, Del Taco chief marketing officer Noah Chillingworth told USA TODAY.
“We tried to do it ‘neat’ by folding the ends of a classic burrito. Instead, we served the first bite of a plain tortilla, followed by a generous portion of beans. After that, it took a search party just to find the cheese. So #BackToDel,” the fast food chain wrote in a social media post.

Del Taco fans celebrate the return of the original burrito
As of March 5, nearly 4,000 Instagram users commented on Del Taco’s announcement post, with many expressing joy at the return of the OG burrito.
“Del, that’s right!” one Instagram user commented.
Another commenter wrote, “I wondered what was going on!!! I thought I was a new employee with the wrong education. I appreciate the open end of the unfolded tortilla. It’s a nostalgic twist on a classic treat. The unfolded detail doesn’t go unnoticed and is highly respected and appreciated.”
Some diners weren’t offended by Del Taco’s new clean burritos
But not everyone was offended by the burrito’s new, cleaner look.
“Has Del Taco finally changed the way they wrap their burritos?” a Reddit user asked on the Del Taco sub-Reddit in January. “One end always opens (leak).”
“I actually thought this was better,” another Instagram user commented on Del Taco’s post.
Some people noted how stupid the whole drama was.
“I can’t believe how many people are upset about Del Taco packaging their burritos correctly,” one Reddit user said.

The mob on January 6 went on a rampage, injuring 140 police officers.
The White House has created a new web page to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the January 6 riot, painting an ominous picture of Democrats.

A Florida man pardoned by President Donald Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing two children, prosecutors announced.
Andrew Paul Johnson, 45, was found guilty in February on five criminal charges, including sexual abuse of a child under 12 and a child under 16. An obscene and lewd display. It also includes electronically transmitting material harmful to minors, according to the State Attorney’s Office for Florida’s Fifth Judicial Circuit. He was sentenced on Thursday, March 5th.
Johnson was arrested in July 2025 after the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a report that “two juveniles were the victims of lewd and lewd acts over a period of several months,” according to court records obtained by USA TODAY.
When deputies responded to a home in Brooksville, Florida, about 80 miles north of Tampa, they were informed by one of the victims’ mothers that both of her children admitted to having been “inappropriately touched by Mr. Johnson,” according to court records and prosecutors. One of the victims told investigators that the abuse began around April 2024, when the victim was 11 years old.
Further investigation revealed that Johnson tried to silence one of the victims by claiming he was “given” $10 million by the Trump administration to compensate the Jan. 6 defendant, and that he intended to leave some of it to the victim in his will, according to court records.
“This tactic appears to have been used to prevent (the child) from disclosing what Andrew had done,” court records state.
Prosecutors said Johnson intended to buy one of the victims’ various gifts or food to deter them from reporting them to authorities. Prosecutors said the victim told investigators that Johnson “once told her never to tell anyone because he might get in trouble.”
Investigators also discovered numerous sexually explicit messages that Johnson exchanged with one of the victims on the instant messaging and social platform Discord, prosecutors said.
“In the messages, Johnson attempted to get the victim to download another application to have a more private conversation, and then encouraged the victim to delete the messages,” the 5th Judicial Circuit State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
She just wanted to play Roblox. Then the messages from the predator began.
Johnson was previously convicted of participating in the Capitol riot.
In August 2024, Johnson was sentenced to one year in prison for his role in the Jan. 6 attack, according to court records. He previously pleaded guilty in April 2024 to charges including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds and disorderly vandalism in a restricted building or grounds.
Federal prosecutors said Mr. Johnson attended Mr. Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House, then marched to the Capitol and used a bullhorn to say, “We have to get the (expletive) job done.” According to court records, the man entered the building through a broken office window and through broken glass.
Prosecutors said Johnson then encouraged other rioters to join him in the Oval Office and continued the disorderly and destructive behavior on the Capitol grounds for more than four hours. Video of the incident shows Johnson inside the building yelling, “We’re not (expletive) done. We need to get through that (expletive) door. We’re not done yet,” court records state.
Johnson also repeatedly cursed and yelled at police officers who used tear gas and other chemical irritants to quell the riot, according to court records. After the incident, prosecutors said Johnson “frequently spread misinformation” on social media about the Jan. 6 attack, calling for a second riot more than a year after his arrest.
Prosecutors said Johnson had a long criminal history, showed no remorse for his participation in the riots and violated the terms of his release at least 10 times.

Capitol rioters face new charges
Johnson is one of a series of Capitol rioters who committed new crimes after being pardoned by President Trump in 2025. On his first day in office, Mr Johnson pardoned more than 1,500 people charged in the January 6 attack, writing in a proclamation that the pardons would begin a “process of national reconciliation”.
The proclamation granted commutations of sentences for more than a dozen people and “full, complete and unconditional pardons for all other individuals convicted of crimes related to the events that occurred on or near the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.”
A December 2025 analysis by the nonprofit watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington found that at least 33 defendants pardoned by President Trump in the Jan. 6 incident have been rearrested, indicted, or sentenced for other crimes since the attack.
Several incidents made national headlines. In October 2025, 34-year-old Christopher Moynihan was indicted on a felony charge of making terroristic threats. He is accused of sending threatening text messages about House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ scheduled public appearances.
According to court records, the text message read: “Jeffries will be speaking in New York in the next few days. I cannot let this terrorist live. … Even if I am hated, he must be eliminated. … I will kill him for the future.”
Federal prosecutors said Moynihan was one of the first rioters to enter the Capitol grounds and witnessed a struggle between rioters and police at the entrance to the rotunda.
In a separate incident, Zachary Jordan Arum, 33, was arrested in May 2025 on suspicion of breaking into a home in Virginia and stealing personal property, local television station WUSA9 reported. According to the TV station, Alam was previously serving an eight-year sentence for assaulting a police officer and breaking a window in the speaker’s lobby.
Before President Trump’s pardon, WUSA9 said Arum was unapologetic for his actions during the January 6 attack. “We are not just expecting a pardon, we are demanding a pardon,” Alam told the television station.

Pete Hegseth says Iran’s plot to assassinate Trump failed
The Iranian officer who led the mass action to assassinate President Trump has been “hunted down and killed,” the Secretary of State announced. Pete Hegseth.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the leader of the Iranian military unit that tried to assassinate President Donald Trump has been killed.
In 2024, the Department of Justice indicted an Iranian man in connection with a conspiracy against then-President-elect Trump.
In 2024, two assassination attempts occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania and a golf course in Florida.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the leader of an Iranian military unit that tried to assassinate President Donald Trump has been killed.
“Iran tried to kill President Trump, but President Trump had the last laugh,” Hegseth said at a press conference on March 4. “We’ve known for a long time that Iran intended to kill President Trump and other U.S. officials… We finally had the opportunity (to target them) from the air.”
Hegseth stressed that the US offensive against Iran, which began on February 28 in parallel with the Israeli attack, was not a priority. Mr. Trump and other officials have said the strikes against Iran are aimed at thwarting Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs, but critics say claims about Iran’s military capabilities are false or exaggerated.
But when did Iran decide to target President Trump? Here’s what you need to know:
Live updates: At least 1,230 people have died in Iran. President Trump’s war powers up for voting
In 2024, the Department of Justice indicted Iranian man Farhad Shakeri on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and murder-for-hire.
In November 2024, a statement from then-Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said, “The Department of Justice has indicted Iranian regime officials tasked with the regime’s role in directing a network of criminal associates to facilitate assassination plots against Iranian targets, including President-elect Donald Trump.” “We also indicted and arrested two individuals who we say were recruited as part of that network to silence and kill American journalists who are prominent critics of the regime on U.S. soil.”
Shakeri was believed to have been living in Iran at the time of the criminal charges, but was on the run. The Justice Department alleged that he used a network of criminal organizations he met in prison to carry out his mission for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps before being deported.
According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Shakeri told law enforcement that he was tasked with providing a plan to kill President Trump on October 7, 2024.
How many assassination attempts were made against President Trump?
Although the alleged plot never materialized, Trump survived two more assassination attempts that year.
On July 13, 2024, Trump was speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when a gunman on a rooftop near the rally fired multiple shots at the then-presidential candidate. Trump was shot in the ear and ducked behind the podium, but Secret Service agents swarmed him and forced him from the stage. The gunman, later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot and killed by police. Spectators at the rally also died.
On September 15, 2024, President Trump was playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when Secret Service agents spotted a rifle shooting through the fenced perimeter of the course. Investigators fired shots at the suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, and pursued him. He was sentenced to life in prison for attempting to kill President Trump on February 4, 2026.
There have also been some security concerns over the years at President Trump’s family property. Most recently, an alleged armed intruder who breached the Mar-a-Lago perimeter was shot and killed by the U.S. Secret Service on February 22nd.

Something you purchased has been recalled. What does that mean?
What happens if something you purchase is recalled? Is it voluntary or mandatory? And what does it mean for you?
Thousands of bicycle helmets sold at Walmart have been recalled due to serious safety concerns.
More than 40,000 Concord-brand helmets are being recalled for failing to meet mandatory safety standards, according to a Feb. 26 warning from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Helmets may not adequately protect bikers in an accident, putting them at risk of serious head injury or death.
The helmets were manufactured in China and sold for about $30 at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from January 2025 to September 2025, according to the CPSC.
Here’s what you need to know about the recalled bicycle helmets.
Which helmets have been recalled?
According to the CPSC, approximately 40,245 Concord brand large-sized 360-degree rechargeable light-up motorcycle helmets are subject to the recall. The helmet is black with black straps, black buckles, and black plastic knobs on the back for adjustments. It has a built-in LED lighting system and has “Concord” printed on the back.
What should I do if I have a recalled helmet?
Consumers who own a recalled helmet should immediately stop using it and contact the manufacturer, Todson, for a full refund at 360concordhelmet@todson.com. To receive a refund, consumers must submit a photo of the helmet with the straps cut to prove the helmet was damaged.
The CPSC said consumers should not throw helmets in the trash because they use lithium-ion batteries. This type of battery poses a high risk of fire and must be disposed of properly. Check with your local municipal household hazardous waste collection center to see if they accept lithium-ion waste, or visit Todson.com/360-concord-recall to learn more about potential disposal locations.
USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale and Steve Gardner discuss the pros and cons of the timing of the World Baseball Classic.
President Donald Trump said baseball is now “not as hot as it used to be” and said the sport is “doing the wrong thing.”
While welcoming Lionel Messi and MLS champion Inter Miami to the White House on Thursday, March 5, President Trump reflected on sports, saying that when “baseball was hot as a pistol,” he would often sit and watch games with the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
Mr. Trump joked that watching a three-hour game with Mr. Steinbrenner was the hardest he had ever seen. “(Steinbrenner) liked me, I liked him, and neither of us liked anyone else,” Trump said.
President Trump did not elaborate on what baseball is doing “wrong,” but he has previously accused MLB of being “woke.”
In his accusations about Steinbrenner, Trump berated his “friend” Alex Rodriguez, who was attending the event. Rodriguez, who won the World Series with the Yankees, was one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history, but he was not inducted into the Hall of Fame because of his ties to performance-enhancing drugs.
Trump boasted of his friendship with Rodriguez in 2026 and hosted him in the Oval Office before Thursday’s event, but the president criticized the former MLB star on Twitter before entering politics.
President Trump called Rodriguez a “drug addict” and regularly advocated for him to be released from his contract with the Yankees. Trump even said that “drugs were the only thing” that made him a great player.
A-Rod doesn’t fare well. We want to give him a chance, but drugs were the only thing that made him great.
Both hardwood floors and engineered wood floors are long-lasting, natural options that bring traditional beauty, warmth, and value to your home. Hardwoods last longer and are less susceptible to water damage, but engineered wood is more affordable and easier to install.
Neither option is best for every room or for every homeowner, so understanding the differences between hardwood floors and engineered wood floors can help you decide which one is best for your space.
What is hardwood?
As the name suggests, hardwood floors are made from hardwood, and manufacturers mill each plank from solid wood. Most hardwood floors are made from deciduous trees such as oak, maple, walnut, and mahogany.
Modern hardwood floors come in planks with tongues and grooves for easy installation, but each plank is constructed entirely of hardwood.
What is engineered wood?
Engineered wood floors are similar to hardwood floors because they often have a top layer of hardwood called a “wear layer.” This layer is much thinner than hardwood floorboards. Engineered wood floors are made with multiple layers of plywood underneath to give them extra thickness.
Engineered wood floors are made of planks that fit together with tongues and grooves, the only difference being the plywood layer that makes up the core layer.

Engineered wood flooring is more affordable than hardwood flooring. The criss-cross pattern of engineered wood plywood reduces the risk of warping, but both materials can be exposed to moisture and water.
The biggest difference is in the longevity of these materials, with hardwood floors lasting twice as long. While a solid wood floor can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifespan, engineered flooring can only withstand a few sandings before it breaks through the top wear layer and reverts to plywood.
This helpful visual comes from Lowe’s. Engineered wood (left) is indistinguishable from hardwood (right). The real difference lies in the structure of the material.
Lifespan and durability
On average, hardwood floors last twice as long as engineered wood floors. This is primarily because solid wood floors can be sanded and refinished more times than engineered wood.
“(Full-engineered wood) is as durable as its solid hardwood counterpart, but depending on the thickness of the veneer, it can only be refinished one to three times,” says Carly Harrington, owner of Floor Coverings International (South Atlanta), a flooring contractor in Georgia.
This means that if your floor is subject to increased wear and tear from pedestrians, children, and pets, solid wood is likely to serve you better over time.
Water and moisture resistant
Because wood and water don’t mix well, any type of flooring that includes wood is susceptible to warping, rotting, and permanent water damage. Hardwood doesn’t have a resilient plywood layer like engineered wood flooring, so it’s more susceptible to water and moisture damage.
“In a climate where weather, water, and humidity vary dramatically, engineered floors are more dimensionally stable, reduce gaps between boards, and perform better over their lifetime,” says Alyssa Tautman, interior designer at flooring retailer Floor360 in Wisconsin.
However, neither option is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms that are prone to leaks, spills, and high humidity. However, engineered wood provides a little more resilience in these areas.
Looks and feels comfortable
Both solid wood floors and engineered wood floors bring natural beauty, add warmth and luxury to your home, and often look the same.
“Once installed, many engineered hardwoods look no different than solid wood because the top layer is real wood,” says Matt Wien, vice president of sales and marketing for Marshall Flooring, a flooring retailer in Cleveland, Ohio.
However, one important difference in terms of aesthetics is the width of the board. If you prefer wider planks for a more open, traditional look and feel, engineered wood is a better option as it is less likely to expand or contract as it gets wider.
“We typically don’t sell hardwood wider than 5 inches because solid wood is less stable as it gets wider,” Wien said. “Using engineered wood provides greater stability when using wider planks, which is ideal for customers who prefer the look of long, wide wood.”
Other flooring products, such as luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, may include a cork or rubber backing layer for added comfort. Solid wood and engineered wood do not have these backing layers, so they are not very comfortable to walk on. It’s also cooler underfoot than carpet, but warmer than concrete.
Installation and maintenance
Both types of wood flooring can be difficult and time-consuming to install, as each plank must be individually nailed by the installer. DIY installation is possible, but the job requires specialized tools and advanced techniques, so it’s best to hire a wood flooring specialist to ensure a professional look.
Routine maintenance for solid wood flooring and engineered wood flooring is similar.
Wipe up spills immediately to prevent water damage and stains.
vacuum regularly
Avoid wet mopping
Never use steam cleaning tools
Use wood-safe cleaners
The same goes for long-term maintenance, which means that your floors will need to be sanded and refinished every 5 to 10 years depending on their wear and tear. However, engineered wood floors do not have as deep a wear layer and should be replaced sooner.
Cost considerations
According to our experts, solid wood floors typically cost between $6 and $22 per square foot for materials and labor, while engineered wood floors cost between $6 and $14 per square foot when fully installed.
“Solid wood is more expensive because you have to factor in the professional labor costs for both installation and stain field finishing,” says Tautman. “(Solid hardwood) adds $2 to $8 per square foot.”
Hardwood vs. engineered wood: which is better for each room?
Hardwood and engineered wood floors are most popular in primary living areas where the risk of exposure to water and moisture is low. Solid wood is a good choice for rooms with a lot of foot traffic, such as living rooms, hallways, and dining rooms. There will be more opportunities to sand and refinish the floor before replacing it.
In a low-traffic bedroom, both options look beautiful and should provide decades of value. If durability is important to you, choose solid wood, but if you’re on a budget, consider engineered wood.
Neither option is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms where there is a high risk of exposure to moisture and water. However, if you want uniformity throughout your home, use engineered wood in these spaces, which is slightly more durable.
The same applies to basements and underground spaces where moisture and moisture are more common. Although engineered wood is slightly better, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring may be a better investment.
conclusion
Although hardwood floors are more expensive, they last on average twice as long, making them a better investment in the long run. Buyers who understand the long-term value of solid wood floors may be willing to pay more for a home with solid wood floors.
If you are on a tight budget, engineered wood flooring is a better option. It’s also slightly more resistant to water and moisture, so engineered wood flooring is better in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements.
If you’re still not sure which type of wood flooring is best for your needs, talk to a local flooring expert about your home and lifestyle to help you decide. Discuss what kind of wear and tear you expect your floor to experience and whether you’d prioritize longevity or initial cost, and ask a professional for their opinion.
FAQ
What is the healthiest flooring for your home?
Natural flooring products such as solid wood, stone, and tile are widely considered to be the healthiest for homes because they are less likely to contain chemicals during the manufacturing process. However, the porosity of the floor should also be considered, as some woodwork and grout between tiles can retain moisture and grow mold if exposed to water or moisture. If allergies are an issue, avoid carpeting as it can collect dust, pollen, and pet dander, which can worsen allergy symptoms.
Is artificial hardwood similar to real hardwood?
Engineered wood floors not only look a lot like solid wood floors, but they can also be hard to tell apart on the surface. Engineered wood floors have a hardwood wear layer on top of them, the only difference is that the core layer is made of plywood. Engineered wood floors look like real hardwood because the plywood is not visible after installation.
Will engineered wood floors increase the value of my home?
Yes, engineered wood floors usually increase the value of your home, depending on what you replace it with. Whether you choose solid wood flooring or engineered wood flooring, wood is one of the most desirable flooring options and many buyers will pay a premium. Solid wood floors are typically twice as durable as engineered wood and can withstand refinishing, making them more valuable.
Can you mop engineered wood floors?
You can mop engineered wood floors, but never use a wet mop. A damp mop with a wood-safe cleaner is best. This limits the amount of water that can seep into the porous wood and threaten the integrity of the floor. Also, avoid using steam mops or other steam cleaners, as heat and moisture can cause engineered wood floors to warp and expand, causing permanent damage.
On March 5, President Trump fired Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, thanked her for her service, and appointed Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to replace her.
Trump replaces Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security
President Donald Trump replaced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after she was hounded by lawmakers over a $220 million ad campaign.
President Donald Trump’s reshuffle of top immigration enforcement officials has added to the confusion over his administration’s signature second-term vision, drawing renewed attention to a deportation push that has faced setbacks amid fierce opposition.
On March 5, President Trump fired Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, thanked her for her service, and appointed Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to replace her.
Noem, who was the face of President Trump’s sweeping and controversial immigration crackdown, became a lightning rod for criticism, with Democrats pushing to impeach her and some prominent Republicans criticizing her leadership weeks before Trump moved to remove her.
Matthew Bartlett, a Republican consultant, said the DHS secretary has become increasingly a political liability for President Trump.
“For a long time, there has been a complete failure of leadership at DHS, and the problem has gotten horribly worse,” Bartlett said.
President Trump is pushing a hard line on immigration enforcement, and Noem sought to fulfill the president’s campaign promise to enact the largest mass deportation program in U.S. history, something Trump Border Secretary Tom Homan promised would bring “shock and awe” in a 2024 post-election interview.
The result has been dramatic scenes in American cities where immigration agents have flooded into communities, sparking anger over their tactics and violent clashes with local officials. The Trump administration has repeatedly taken a tougher stance, deploying the National Guard to support the effort and pursuing a confrontational approach that tests the public’s desire to aggressively target millions of immigrants without legal borders and status.
Nomu has been at the center of this effort, garnering public attention by sparring with local officials and often touring with President Trump the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida and the notorious prison in El Salvador where undocumented immigrants are sent.
But the deportation efforts led by Noem have repeatedly hit roadblocks. Some of Trump’s moves were rejected in court, with judges ruling against deploying the National Guard and the administration withdrawing troops from Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles. Trump also withdrew immigration officials who killed two people in Minneapolis, sparking protests. After Minneapolis, Democrats targeted DHS funding and allowed it to lapse and shut down as they pushed for ICE reform.
Noem was criticized for her response to the Minneapolis operation, but President Trump backed her at the time, saying, “I think she’s doing a very good job. The border is completely secure.”
Meanwhile, the public began to grow dissatisfied with Trump’s immigration policies, as polls showed a majority of Americans disapproved of his performance on issues central to his political identity.
Bartlett said immigration has now become a “strain” for Trump and Noem’s resignation could signal a “course correction.” Some of Mr. Trump’s allies welcomed the move.
Asked whether Noem’s firing signaled a change in the administration’s immigration strategy, the White House referred to social media comments by press secretary Caroline Leavitt.
“President Trump’s immigration policy is to secure our borders and remove criminal illegal aliens from our country, and that will continue without interruption,” he said in comments posted on social media on March 5.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said in a statement about DHS reform that “the time for change has come.”
Noem has faced intense criticism, including from some Republicans, for the way her administration has pursued the deportation drive. She was grilled in two Congressional hearings this week, with North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis accusing her of pursuing “quantity over quality” in pursuing immigration arrests.
“We are an exceptional nation, and one of the reasons we are exceptional is that we expect exceptional leadership. And you have demonstrated anything but that,” Tillis said.
During the hearing, Noem faced questions from lawmakers about a $220 million Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign that featured her prominently. She said Trump had endorsed the campaign, a comment that reportedly upset the president, who later told Reuters he “didn’t know anything about it.” Noem was also asked about DHS’s purchase of luxury jets and other concerns about the agency, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Protection operations.
Democrats have focused on allegations of abuse by immigration officials during Noem’s tenure. Democratic leaders who have fought ICE tactics in their communities were quick to celebrate her removal.
“Kristi Noem, please don’t hit the door while you’re out,” Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker said in a video posted to social media. “This is your legacy: corruption and chaos, parents and children tear gassed. Mothers, nurses, American citizens shot in the face.”
Mr. Pritzker clashed with Mr. Noem and Mr. Trump over the ICE operation in Chicago and the administration’s deployment of the National Guard to the city.
Minnesota’s Democratic governor, Tim Walz, said on social media that the DHS secretary had done “a staggering amount of damage.” But Walz continued to express concerns about the agency’s implementation of Trump’s deportation push.
“The fact remains that we need a complete overhaul of DHS,” he said.
Lowe’s flooring prices are among the best in the industry, and we have a wide variety of flooring types to choose from. While some may be hesitant to use third-party contractors, Lowe’s remains a leading flooring installation provider due to its national reputation. But is it your flooring installation company?
In this Lowe’s flooring review, we’ll cover everything you need to know to decide if this company is right for you, including available products, customer reviews, and cost.

How is Lowe’s flooring installed?
Lowe’s utilizes a large network of local flooring companies to handle all physical installation work, so everything after the first measurement is subcontracted out. Lowe’s begins the process by having a representative from the selected subcontractor visit your home to take measurements and evaluate the project.
Once Lowe’s has your measurements, we’ll create a quote based on the type of flooring you want, the labor costs from your chosen contractor, and the fee Lowe’s charges to connect you with the flooring installer. The contractor then completes the installation, and Lowe’s handles communications and customer service throughout the project.
Lowe’s flooring installation price
Lowe’s will not provide specific prices until measurements are taken and labor costs are calculated. However, there is a tool on the site to estimate the cost of flooring so you can get an idea of the cost. To illustrate the prices in the table below, we have used a 100 square foot room as an example.
Types of flooring
Average cost (per square foot)
carpet
$3.88 – $6.62
LVP or LVT
$2.29 – $4.29
laminate
$1.44 – $3.99
Hardwood/artificial wood
$2.99 - $6.89
tile
$0.99 – $3.49
Although Lowe’s has very competitive pricing, it’s important to note that cost isn’t everything.
“The biggest mistake homeowners make (when installing new flooring) is basing their decision on price rather than actual cost,” warns Tim Oswald, owner of Floor Coverings International in coastal Rhode Island. “Focusing only on the lowest price can result in choosing flooring that wears out or breaks down quickly.”
Additionally, please note that these prices are just estimates and numbers can vary significantly. All of the following factors can affect cost:
Types of flooring that must be removed before new flooring can be installed
condition of your subfloor
Contains the amount of trims and other add-ons you need
Room complexity, including layout
Contractor labor costs assigned to the project
room size
Quality of the flooring material you choose
Flooring will be installed by Lowe’s
Lowe’s offers all standard types of flooring in the table below. For other types of flooring, such as polished concrete, bamboo or cork, you may be able to connect with a local flooring contractor, but these prices and services are not listed on the Lowe’s website.

How to measure the floor that Lowe’s installs
The first big step that Lowe’s takes in a flooring replacement project is measuring. Once you’ve assigned a contractor to your project, arrange for someone from that company to come to your home and take the next steps.
Take overall measurements. First, the person in charge will measure the entire room and obtain the total area. Depending on the type of flooring desired, it may be rounded up to account for offcuts.
Add-on measures: The representative will also take measurements for additional services, such as the linear feet of trim that needs to be replaced or the number of door sills that need to be installed.
Assess the complexity of your installation. Field professionals should look for and avoid items that can take longer to install, such as baseboard heaters and HVAC grills.
Assess the condition of the subfloor. Although the subfloor is not visible beneath the existing floor, the technician will need to measure the condition of the subfloor to see if repairs are needed, and if they are, the cost could be higher. They may also look for signs of uneven floors or evidence of past leaks.
Take a reference photo: Finally, the representative must take a photo to provide to Lowe’s and for their own records.
Should I buy flooring before or after Lowe’s measures?
Lowe’s only offers installation services with package deals. This means that you will need to purchase the flooring at the same time as the installation. If you purchased your flooring before Lowe’s took measurements, you will need to contact a local contractor to install it yourself. All quotes for Lowe’s flooring include materials and installation labor.
How much does a professional measurement at Lowe’s cost?
Lowe’s does not charge for professional measurements, so this service is included with your flooring project.
Lowe’s Flooring Reviews
There are countless reviews about Lowe’s online, but most of the reviews on sites like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website and TrustPilot are about the retailer and not specific to the flooring installation services the retailer provides.
We’ve seen several reports on Reddit from past customers and contractors who work as subcontractors for Lowe’s Flooring. Customer reviews and experiences vary, with some having no issues throughout the process and being satisfied with the low cost and high value. On the other hand, some people warn you to never work at Lowe’s.
Unfortunately, this range of experience is always possible with subcontracting companies like Lowe’s. Your experience will vary depending on your local Lowe’s branch and the flooring contractor assigned to your project.
Lowe’s Flooring Alternatives
Below are some of Lowe’s direct competitors. These are all regional or national companies that subcontract the work to local installers.

You can also choose to hire a local flooring contractor instead of going through an intermediary. That way, you’re more likely to have a good experience and receive solid customer service. Smaller companies also tend to have better quality control on their work and may offer longer labor warranties and more flooring options.
How does USA TODAY rate flooring companies?
When evaluating a flooring company, consider all of the following:
years of experience
Typical price range for materials and labor
Types of flooring available
Whether the company handles labor internally or through a third party
Measurement and installation process
Online company reviews
Customer reviews and general opinions about our services
Take the time to read customer reviews on multiple sites whenever possible, as this is often a good indicator of the quality of service you can expect.
Bottom line: Is Lowe’s flooring right for you?
Lowe’s has a national presence, works with local flooring contractors in every state, and offers all major types of flooring, so it may be an option worth considering for its simplicity. However, because all work is subcontracted to third parties, many homeowners face issues such as poor customer service, poor communication, and lack of accountability.
Lowe’s is a budget-friendly flooring option, so it might be a good choice if you’re on a budget. However, if you want to ensure quality installation and excellent customer service, you should consider a local flooring contractor with a history of positive reviews from customers.

FAQ
How much does Lowe’s floor installation cost?
Lowe’s flooring installation costs vary widely depending on the type of flooring you want, the existing flooring in your home, and the condition of the subfloor. However, according to direct estimates from Lowe’s, costs typically range from $1 to $7 per square foot, based primarily on the type and quality of flooring you’re looking for. This cost includes materials and labor, initial measurements and project evaluation.
Is it worth hiring a flooring specialist?
It’s usually worth hiring a flooring professional because you’re likely to get a finished product that looks great and lasts for years. A professional can also guide you to the right type of flooring for your specific needs. We can also repair and level your subfloor and assess any hidden issues that may be leading to ongoing problems with your floor.
Does Lowe’s move furniture before installing flooring?
The contractor assigned to your flooring project through Lowe’s will move your furniture, but you will have to pay an additional fee. Prices vary depending on the amount, size, and bulk of the furniture in your room and whether it requires disassembly to move. They can also provide you with an estimate for furniture moving along with an estimate for flooring installation.
Which is better for flooring: Lowe’s or Home Depot?
In our opinion, home improvement stores are better for flooring. Both companies have large locations nationwide, offer a variety of flooring products, and are budget-friendly. Both are subcontracted to local flooring specialists. However, Home Depot’s flooring installation services seem to have more positive reviews. However, the estimated prices at Lowe’s are lower, so if you’re on a budget, Lowe’s may be a better option.
Thousands of Americans are fleeing the Middle East amid wars, Rubio says.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that 9,000 Americans have been evacuated from the Middle East since the outbreak of the US-Iran war.
Missile sirens sound every few hours. Young children scream in fear. Fire lights up the sky.
For more than 1,000 Afghan refugees holed up in a US-run camp in Qatar, this has been life since the US and Israel began a war with Iran less than a week ago.
Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, these people have been waiting to be resettled in the U.S. at Camp al-Sayriya, a U.S. military base-turned-refugee camp on the outskirts of Qatar’s capital Doha.
Many of the 1,100 Afghan refugees stuck at the base served with the U.S. military during the occupation of their homeland, and about 150 of them are family members of active-duty U.S. military personnel. They can no longer return to their homeland, where they risk persecution and death by the ruling Taliban government.
A new war in the Middle East, launched by the Trump administration and Israel on February 28, has left both countries in fear and confusion as Iranian retaliatory missiles fly overhead, are intercepted by US and Qatari air defense missiles, and rain debris. Residents told USA TODAY that people could not sleep all night standing outside watching the missiles pass through the sky. An explosion was heard nearby and the children screamed.
Four refugees at the camp spoke to USA TODAY on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation. Residents of the camp have received messages from officials and the Qatari government ordering them not to speak publicly about the missile attack since the war broke out days ago.
“We came from the war,” a 14-year-old girl living in the camp told USA TODAY. “Right now, there is a war going on here, and every day there are missiles flying, missiles flying, explosions happening.”
“We haven’t committed any crime,” she said. “We are in this camp like people in prison.”
Approximately 800 of the camp residents who fled Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal were admitted to the United States under the Refugee Resettlement Program after an extensive screening and interview process, according to a letter sent to Trump administration officials by AfghanistanEvac, an advocacy group for Afghan allies. Within hours of taking office in 2025, President Donald Trump suspended migration programs indefinitely, plunging their lives into chaos and uncertainty. Many Afghans have now been stuck in camps in Qatar for years.
After the first U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, the country launched a barrage of missiles and drones at U.S. allies in the region, including Qatar. In the days that followed, refugees said there was panic at Camp as Sairiya, a former army base in the desert outside Doha, as sirens blared intermittently throughout the day and residents took shelter in small shipping containers.
“The container detention facilities we live in do not provide meaningful protection and there are no hardened shelters readily accessible to residents,” the camp residents wrote in a joint letter to the State Department and members of Congress. “When these alarms go off, mothers and children often have no safe place to go.”
“Roughly 1,100 civilians are currently living in conditions of anxiety, fear and waiting.”
A State Department spokesperson told USA TODAY in an email that the agency is “actively addressing all relevant operational concerns in the region,” including “the safety of the residents of Camp As Seiyah (CAS), which is under U.S. control.”
Missile fragments hit family shelter
Refugees at the camp told USA TODAY that on the first day of the war, missile alerts came within 15 minutes. Now it happens every few hours.
Refugees said young children and pregnant women screamed in fear as explosions rang out nearby. According to the 14-year-old girl, most people at the camp, including the girl and her parents, have already been prescribed antidepressants due to high stress. One man said he believes his wife went into premature labor a few days ago due to the stress of being caught up in a war with no way out.
The missile barrage has not yet caused physical injuries to anyone in the camp, but several refugees reported that fragments from the intercepted missile hit one family’s empty shelter. Photos and videos of the aftermath showed a gaping hole in the roof and people examining a dinner plate-sized piece of metal found on the ground.
The 50-year-old man, who fled Afghanistan after working for the U.S. government for more than a decade, said he begged camp authorities to move his children to a safer location, but was told authorities had nowhere else to go.
The man said that on March 2, about 100 people packed up their belongings and arrived in Doha, sought help from Qatari authorities and tried to flee through the camp’s main gate, but guards ordered them to turn back.
“The government is busy. It can’t do anything for you,” they told the man. “They are busy saving their own people.”
People who have lived in the camps for years are already “mentally numb,” the man said. But the barrage of missiles has pushed many over the edge, he said.
The camp has become a “hellish place,” he said. “It’s because of God’s kindness that we were saved, but nothing has happened yet. Things will only get worse if things continue like this.”
Hundreds of refugees in the camp live in large warehouses and sleep in bunk beds. Since the missile barrage began, people have been moved to metal shipping crates to sleep. Photos and videos they shared with USA TODAY showed families of seven or eight crammed into a single container, with children huddled in a narrow niche along a wall. Evacuees say walls shake when missiles explode outside.
The father, who has been living in the camp with his wife and five children for more than a year, said his youngest daughter, 10, had stopped eating or sleeping since the missile barrage began.
She’s “re-traumatized,” he says. “She cries day and night.”
The State Department says it plans to close the camp by March 31, but has not specified where the residents will go next. Refugees who spoke to USA TODAY said they were told they would be sent to an unspecified third country. A March 3 meeting with State Department officials was told that the next destination had not yet been determined.
“The war has started. We don’t know what will happen,” the father said.
“What will our future be? What will our children’s future be?”
For years, McDonald’s and its competitors have tried to lure customers with great value meals. Their menu now has room for bigger burgers, like the Big Arch, the largest burger in McDonald’s history.
Burger King appears to be overshadowed by viral McDonald’s taste test
After McDonald’s CEO Christopher Kempczinski’s Big Arch taste test went viral, other fast food bosses decided to get in on the fun.
where’s the beef? As the battle rages on, there are plenty of places to go for a burger.
Fast food chains are trying to lure consumers not only with value meals but also with beefier burgers. McDonald’s just expanded its menu with the Big Arch, the biggest burger ever, and Burger King revamped its already gigantic Whopper for the first time in a decade.
“Chains are pursuing two strategies simultaneously: value and premium,” said Taylor Tomita, research and outreach specialist at data and content agency NeoMam Studios. “Companies like McDonald’s have leaned heavily into value menus over the past year to attract budget-conscious customers. But they’re also launching larger burgers like the new Big Arch to appeal to those looking for something closer to a restaurant-style experience.”
He said other examples of large burgers include In-N-Out’s Double-Double, Shake Shack’s Shackburger, and Whataburger’s signature burger, which NetCredit recently judged to be the best value for a single-patty burger, weighing 3.56 ounces and costing $5.92.
Wendy’s: Fast food chain is offering $100,000 for its chief tasting officer. The application method is as follows.
McDonald’s “bigger, more luxurious burger” Big Arch price range
McDonald’s may be experimenting with Big Arch pricing. According to research by NeoMam Studios, burger prices range from about $8 to more than $10 at most restaurants, with the average price being about $8.88.
But the highest price in Lewiston, Maine ($12.99) is 74% higher than Columbia, South Carolina, at $7.46, he said. “This gap suggests chains are testing how far customers will go for bigger, more luxurious burgers,” Tomita said.
Big Arch’s appearance and subsequent conversations “started tasting and comparing, got both chains’ attention, and put both burgers in the spotlight,” he said.
Burger executives take to social media to fight
The burger fight resulted in jabs between combatants online. After McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski posted a video taste-testing the Big Arch, some commenters jeered him online for not being a big fan of the Big Burger.
Burger King continued to post videos of an “excited” company president, Tom Curtis, stuffing his face with a Whopper. Wendy’s President Pete Serken also weighed in on Wednesday, March 4, posting a video of himself biting into a Baconator. “This is what a great burger should be,” he says in the video.
Jack in the Box posted a video on Thursday, March 5, of its Jack mascot saying, “Just a bite? We don’t do that here.”
Even as the online battle heats up, the burger giant is hoping its savings-size sales plan continues to be a success. McDonald’s U.S. sales rose 6.8% in the three months ended December 31, 2025, the largest increase in nearly two years, thanks to the MacValue menu and meals priced at $5, $6 and $7, according to Reuters. The sales increase compares with the chain’s 1.4% decline in the previous year, when an E. coli outbreak affected demand. Burger King, which had its own $4.99 meal deal, also saw sales jump 2.6% in the three-month period at its U.S. restaurants.
The “barbell strategy,” which emphasizes value meals on one side and hearty dishes on the other, has worked well for restaurants like Taco Bell and Olive Garden, said Sara Senatore, an analyst at Bank of America Securities.
“You have what we think of as value in your price range, but you also have value in abundance or quality. People really want value for money,” she told USA TODAY.
Catering to consumers looking for value, burger chains are now promoting “these upscale, hearty sandwiches,” Mr. Senatore said.
Big Arch, I tried the new Whopper. Here’s what we thought
McDonald’s is raising the bar on burgers at the Big Arch. It weighs about 1 pound, has 1,020 calories, and is made with two quarter-pound patties, three slices of cheese, and a dressing that includes the new Big Arch sauce.
“You should be hungry when you order this,” I said in the video taste test. I was happy with the burger, but it’s hard to eat the Big Arch Burger without making a mess, as it’s covered in so much mustard-scented Big Arch sauce, so bring your napkins. Eating while driving is not recommended.
Try McDonald’s Big Arch Burger on USA TODAY
USA TODAY’s Mike Snyder sampled McDonald’s Big Arch Burger, which will be released nationwide in March 2026.
I also sampled the new Whopper and the sandwich was delicious. It also “looks great” thanks to Burger King’s new wrapping paper and boxes for serving the burgers. “If you had a smashburger, I would try this one now.”

Her tenure was marked by controversies ranging from pets and government contracts to defending the killing of American citizens by federal agents.
Trump replaces Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security
President Donald Trump replaced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after she was hounded by lawmakers over a $220 million ad campaign.
Kristi Noem’s career as Homeland Security secretary has been mired in controversy during the year she led President Donald Trump’s agency.
On March 5, President Trump announced that Noem, a former South Dakota governor and congressman, would resign as secretary of the department. Trump said in a post on Truth Social that her new role would be as special envoy to a new security coalition in the Western Hemisphere.
Her tenure since Trump took office in January 2025 has been marked by controversies ranging from pets and government contracts to how quickly she defended the killing of American citizens by immigration enforcement officers.
Still, she was tasked with overseeing one of the Trump administration’s most high-profile initiatives at the time, when she headed the agency that oversees federal immigration enforcement. For example, during the first year of the Trump administration, border crossings plummeted. Meanwhile, DHS is overseeing an increase in deportations, especially for people with no criminal records and other Trump priorities.
Here we introduce five controversies surrounding Nomu, a Republican who was once considered President Trump’s running mate.
He fabricated a meeting with Kim Jong-un and shot his dog to death.
Excerpts from Noem’s 2024 memoir, “No Going Back,” were highlighted when she was floated as a running mate. But they resurfaced in a Senate hearing this week.
In her book, she details how she fatally shot a 14-month-old wire-haired pointer on her family’s farm because it was “untrainable.” She also killed a goat.
At a March 3 hearing, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) accused her of killing the animals.
“These are bad decisions made in the heat of the moment, similar to what happened in Minneapolis,” Tillis said. “We are an exceptional nation, and one of the reasons we are exceptional is that we expect exceptional leadership, and you have demonstrated anything but that.”
They exchanged farewell remarks on March 5, after President Trump announced that he would be fired and replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma). “He loves dogs, which is a big plus,” Tillis posted on X, along with a photo of Marin and their six children.
Additionally, Noem’s memoir included false anecdotes about meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Her spokesperson reportedly said that this section would be corrected.
The murders of Renee Goode and Alex Preti and the rise in deaths in custody
In January, federal agents under DHS killed two Americans in the span of two weeks in Minneapolis during an immigration crackdown. Noem commented on the two shootings before the investigation concluded, criticizing the people who were shot.
On January 7th, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good in her car. Noem said Good attacked and attempted to run over an ICE officer. Video evidence disputes Noem’s account.
On January 24, Border Patrol agents shot and killed Alex Preti multiple times. Noem said Preti had a concealed carry permit and brandished a firearm. The video shows this did not happen.
Noem accused both Good and Preti of committing “acts of domestic terrorism.”
Asked to apologize for her comments about Ms. Good and Ms. Preti during a Congressional hearing, Ms. Noem did not apologize to the families, but expressed condolences for their loss.
At the same time, Noem’s DHS is under questioning over a record number of deaths in ICE custody in 2015.
DHS ads, corruption allegations
DHS has grown further with federal funding, and the agency has spent millions of dollars to advance mass deportations, a priority of President Trump. ProPublica reported that DHS has a $220 million advertising deal with Strategy Group. The company has ties to Noem, the husband of former DHS press secretary Tricia McLaughlin, and a top aide to Corey Lewandowski, a Trump ally who ran the president’s 2016 campaign. Lewandowski serves as a special public servant for DHS.
Noem reportedly had an internal policy at DHS that required her and her aides to approve agency spending on contracts over $100,000. In Congressional testimony, she said Lewandowski was not involved in approving the contract, which ProPublica reported was contradicted by internal documents.
Kristi Noem faces relationship allegations with Corey Lewandowski
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was asked about her relationship with Corey Levandowski before the House Judiciary Committee.
Luxury jet plane launches pilot from above blanket
Noem’s DHS has purchased private jets to use for deportation flights, including during the government shutdown.
Just recently, the Department of Homeland Security purchased a $70 million luxury jet, which Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said was like “buying a Rolls-Royce to turn into a subway bus.”
Noem reportedly lost her blanket on one of the government planes during a flight in the spring of 2025. Lewandowski, who was traveling with Noem, entered the cockpit and fired at the pilot from above his blanket, Reuters reported. The pilot was later reinstated because he was one of the few people to fly the plane.
El Salvador prison shooting
At the beginning of the first year of the Trump administration, Noem oversaw the deportation of about 250 Venezuelan immigrant men to a notorious El Salvadoran prison due to gang ties. She boasted that she had placed the men in El Salvador’s terrorist confinement center, which Salvadoran President Nayib Boucle, an ally of President Trump, has used to imprison suspected gang members indefinitely without trial.
In late March, Noem showed up at the prison wearing a $50,000 Rolex watch, demonstrating the administration’s aggressive stance on immigration enforcement.
The men were later released to Venezuela in a prisoner exchange.
In her new role, Noem will be responsible for security issues in the Western Hemisphere. Noem is expected to serve as special envoy to President Trump’s new coalition, working with a list of Latin American leaders on immigration and drug trafficking issues.
This article has been updated to clarify information about Noem’s tenure at the Department of Homeland Security.
The virus outbreak in China is raising concerns reminiscent of 2019, but this time the focus is on human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common respiratory virus.
Unbranded – Lifestyle
Cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have hit certain states, including California and New Jersey.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory tract disease, and there is currently no vaccine to prevent HMPV or specific antiviral therapy to treat HMPV.
Rather, medical care can be “supportive,” treating symptoms, the CDC notes. “Most people recover spontaneously,” the agency said, but added that those who become ill should drink plenty of fluids, stay home and rest.
The Cleveland Clinic says treatment for the virus may include oxygen therapy if patients have trouble breathing.
Here’s what else you should know about this virus:
Is HMPV a new virus?
HMPV is not a “new” virus in 2026. HMPV was first discovered in 2001, but since its outbreak in April 2025, cases in the United States have not surged to recent levels.
According to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS), as of February 21, the latest data available, HMPV accounts for just over 5% of positive tests for respiratory viruses reported each week. This is up from 3.83% the previous week.
In April 2025, the weekly percentage peaked at 7.43%, according to NREVSS data.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health, in addition to the increase in the number of HMPV infections, New Jersey is experiencing an increase in the number of people infected with respiratory syncytial virus, the new coronavirus, and influenza, and the number of people seeking emergency medical care is rapidly increasing.
High levels of HMPV have been detected in sewage in communities in Northern California, according to data from the WastewaterScan Dashboard, a public database that monitors infectious diseases in sewage.
Symptoms of HMPV
Symptoms of HMPV include cough, nasal congestion, fever, and shortness of breath, according to the CDC. In some cases, these symptoms can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia.
Like influenza, HMPV is seasonal. That is, the epidemic begins in winter and lasts until spring.
According to the CDC, the incubation period for HMPV can be 3 to 6 days, and the groups most at risk include young children and adults 65 and older.
Prevention of HMPV
There is no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV, but there are steps you can take to prevent infection.
Because this virus can be transmitted from person to person or through surfaces, the CDC recommends the following key prevention strategies for respiratory viruses:
wash hands properly
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with sick people
Cleaning frequently touched surfaces
Initiatives for cleaner air
Also, if you have cold-like symptoms, cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze to prevent infection.
Vinyl and laminate are both manufactured flooring types that are budget-friendly alternatives to traditional hardwood flooring. Vinyl is generally considered to be a premium choice that is durable and visually appealing, but the quality of each product can vary widely.
If you’re not sure which is best for your home, understanding the differences between vinyl flooring and laminate is a good place to start.
What is vinyl flooring?
Vinyl flooring is primarily made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), but it also contains plasticizers to increase flexibility, stabilizers to increase UV resistance, and printed layers similar to other flooring materials such as wood and stone. There is a wear layer on top, a decorative layer below, a core layer made of PVC, and a backing layer.
There are three main types of vinyl flooring.
Vinyl sheet: Vinyl sheeting is usually the most affordable to install, but the least aesthetically appealing of the three options. It seems to be highly waterproof as there are no seams. Vinyl sheeting is less durable than other options, so it’s most common in rooms with low foot traffic, such as laundry rooms and utility rooms.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): LVP flooring closely resembles traditional hardwood floors and can provide greater durability and water resistance than engineered wood flooring. Most common in living areas and bedrooms.
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT): LVT flooring is as durable and water resistant as LVP flooring, but it is harder and more similar to stone or tile floors. Most common in bathrooms and kitchens.
What is laminate flooring?
“Laminate flooring has a core made of high-density fiberboard and a top laminate made of melamine-impregnated paper,” explained Thomas Borcherding, owner and principal designer of Homestar Design Remodel, a home improvement company in Missouri.
Laminate flooring also has a wear layer for physical protection and a design layer to make it resemble other materials. Like vinyl flooring, laminate flooring comes in sheets or tiles, but the material looks more synthetic and doesn’t resemble real wood or stone as much as LVP or LVT flooring.
The core layer of laminate flooring easily absorbs water and moisture, making it much less resistant to spills and humid environments.
Laminate flooring is more affordable, but less common, especially given its lack of visual appeal, durability, and moisture resistance, and is typically used for low-traffic rooms such as utility rooms and laundry rooms.
Vinyl flooring vs. laminate: key differences at a glance
Neither flooring material is best suited for every situation, so you should understand the pros and cons of vinyl and laminate before deciding which one to install in your home.

Durable and water resistant
Vinyl flooring is more durable because it is harder and has a thicker top layer that resists scuffs, scratches, and footwear. PVC is also impermeable, making it highly water resistant, while the laminate’s HDF or MDF core layer easily absorbs water.
For these reasons, vinyl flooring is a better option in high-traffic, damp areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. It’s also a long-lasting option, especially if you have kids or pets, as it can get a lot of wear and tear.
However, laminate is more affordable, so if you want to optimize your installation for an affordable price, laminate is a better option. Note that the long-term value will be lower since you will have to pay to replace it more frequently. Some homeowners choose vinyl for high-traffic rooms, such as the kitchen, and save laminate for low-traffic rooms, such as the laundry room.
Looks and feels comfortable
“For certain people, laminate flooring has an image of being outdated and of lower quality than vinyl flooring,” says Borcherding. “Vinyl flooring is considered a more modern flooring solution and, as a result, more appealing to potential buyers. For this reason, vinyl flooring often improves the resale value of a home over laminate.”
Not only does it resemble more expensive materials such as wood or stone, but it also wears out more slowly and physical damage does not appear as quickly.
Both flooring materials offer some cushioning and comfort underfoot, but laminate’s core is more flexible and may be a little gentler on your joints. You can also choose a thicker underlay underneath either for increased comfort. Underlayment reduces the noise generated when walking on either type of flooring.
Installation and maintenance
Installing flooring requires some tools, patience, and skill regardless of the material you choose, but both vinyl and laminate flooring are easy to DIY compared to options like hardwood, natural stone, and tile. Both can be cut using a standard blade on a table saw or miter saw, and both materials are lightweight and easy to place into place.
However, if you have no experience installing flooring, it is best to leave the installation to a professional. A professional will not only be able to handle any subfloor issues and repairs, but will also be more likely to install the flooring without any visible mistakes.
In addition to ease of installation and cost, maintenance must also be considered. Both types of flooring are easy to clean, but most homeowners find vinyl easier because they can use a wet mop without worrying about water intrusion or warping. Vinyl flooring lasts a long time, so using vinyl flooring will reduce the need for replacement in the future.
Cost considerations
Laminate is one of the most affordable flooring options, so it’s a better option if you have a small renovation budget. However, vinyl is more durable and water-resistant, meaning it needs to be replaced and repaired less often, increasing its long-term value.
Expect to pay between $4 and $12 per square foot when installing vinyl flooring and between $4 and $10 per square foot when installing laminate flooring. But be sure to consider the long-term value as well. Vinyl flooring is long-lasting and durable, so you may get more value in the long run.
Additionally, vinyl looks better than laminate, so unless budget is the main deciding factor, vinyl is usually a better option.
Which one is better for each room?
“Neither laminate nor vinyl is generally ‘better,'” says Mike Solomich, owner of Quality Hardwood of Michigan, a Michigan flooring supplier. “It depends on the space and how you use your home. Vinyl tends to perform better where moisture is a concern, while laminate shines in dry living spaces where homeowners want a more traditional wood look at a lower price point.”
Laundry rooms, utility rooms, and guest bathrooms are good choices for laminate because they have low foot traffic and the risk of spills and leaks is relatively low. These rooms have low foot traffic, so visual appeal isn’t necessarily your biggest concern.
Most homeowners find vinyl to be a better option for living areas that are visible to guests, high-traffic areas, or where moisture or water is a constant concern. Kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and bedrooms are often suitable for vinyl flooring.
For basements and subterranean spaces, laminate is best if you’re on a tight budget, but if you and your family regularly use the space for entertaining, vinyl may be a better long-term investment.
conclusion
Vinyl flooring is more durable, aesthetically pleasing, and water-resistant than laminate, adding value to your home. “In most cases, LVP and LVT tend to add more value to a home than laminate,” said Brian Mussner, president of Mr. Handyman, a full-service manual labor and home improvement company. “Vinyl is durable, water-resistant, and low-maintenance, supporting long-term performance.”
However, in low-traffic areas of your home, laminate flooring will provide more than enough longevity. Additionally, laminate is more affordable, so it’s a better choice if you’re on a budget.
If you’re not sure which option best suits your lifestyle and desires, talk to a local flooring professional about your project. Discuss how you plan to use the space you’re renovating, the expected costs, and ask which option is best for your particular case.
FAQ
Is vinyl flooring better than laminate?
Vinyl flooring typically looks better and has better resistance to physical abrasion, water, and moisture than laminate, but it’s not better in all cases. Laminate is much more affordable, so if you have a small renovation budget, you may want to choose laminate. Laminate is also a good choice for rooms that don’t get a lot of activity, so your choice will depend on your specific needs.
Is it okay for laminate flooring to get wet?
Laminate flooring can get wet as the top layer has good water resistance, but prolonged exposure to water or moisture can cause irreparable damage. The core layer of laminate flooring is HDF or MDF, which is highly absorbent and will warp or crack when wet. When cleaning laminate, be careful not to use a dripping mop and spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible.
Does vinyl flooring look fake?
While low-end vinyl flooring can look fake, high-end luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring look very similar to more expensive materials such as hardwood, stone, and even ceramic tile. Purchasing natural-looking vinyl flooring is more expensive, but it can enhance your home without the drawbacks of real wood or stone, such as poor water resistance and high installation costs.
Which will last longer: vinyl or laminate?
Vinyl flooring almost always lasts longer than laminate. Vinyl flooring has a PVC core material, so it won’t get damaged even if it gets wet. Laminate flooring contains a wood fiber core that expands and warps in the presence of moisture. Even in rooms where spills and leaks aren’t an issue, vinyl lasts longer because it resists physical abrasion.
Is vinyl or laminate easier to install?
Both vinyl and laminate floors are relatively easy to install. Notably, both are available with a click-lock system, making them easy to install by DIY. However, laminate flooring may be easier to install because it is more flexible. This means less work is required to level and smooth the subfloor. This is especially important when installing in a basement or directly over a concrete slab foundation.
Jeffrey Epstein-themed ‘Walk of Shame’ art exhibit pops up in Washington DC
A Jeffrey Epstein-themed “walk of shame” has sprung up in Washington, D.C., featuring stars linking to public records that have published the names of people with ties to Epstein.
The Justice Department announced this week that it would restore nearly 50,000 documents to the public Epstein files. The files came under scrutiny because they had previously been published and posted online by federal authorities, but were removed without notice after news organizations flagged them for exposing sensitive content.
The ministry confirmed that some files exposed sensitive content. These are not permanently deleted and will be edited and reposted.
“The Department has not removed any files from the library. In accordance with the (Epstein File Transparency Act), our teams are working around the clock to address victims’ concerns and redact any personally identifying information or images of a sexual nature,” the department said in a March 5 statement to USA TODAY.
The Epstein File Transparency Act required the Justice Department to release all investigative files it kept related to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who has been accused of sexually assaulting more than 1,000 women and girls. He died by suicide in custody while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
The department has released about 3 million of the 6 million pages in its collection and has steadfastly resisted demands from Congress to release the remaining pages.
As of March 2, 47,635 files have been removed from the site for further investigation. The ministry said it is expected to be published by the end of the week.
“All corresponding documents will be reposted online after appropriate redactions have been made,” the Justice Department said in a statement.
The missing files came into focus after multiple media outlets reported that files related to allegations against President Donald Trump had been removed from websites. NPR reported in late February that the Justice Department had withheld some of Epstein’s files related to allegations that Trump sexually abused minors. NPR’s investigation also found that some documents in public databases that also mentioned Trump in the accusations against Jeffrey Epstein had been deleted.
CBS News reported on March 3 that an analysis found the department had deleted more than 47,000 files, totaling about 65,500 pages.
Gasoline prices soar as Strait of Hormuz closes due to Iran war
Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz is raising gasoline prices, threatening oil supplies and raising concerns about the impact on the global economy.
U.S. stocks fell throughout the day, with the blue-chip Dow index closing around 800 points lower as oil prices rose above $80 a barrel, the highest in more than a year, after Iran said it had hit a tanker with a missile off the coast of Iraq.
The missile attack signals a growing risk to ships in the Persian Gulf across the Strait of Hormuz. Iran earlier announced it had closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes. President Donald Trump has offered U.S. Navy ships to protect the waterway, but shipping bottlenecks have held up oil and container ships. Oil prices have soared to their highest level since January 2025, with blockades limiting supplies and attacks spreading to more countries in the region.
Although many analysts and economists are not yet concerned that the recent rise in oil prices will significantly boost inflation or bring the economy to a standstill, they acknowledge that the longer the disruption lasts, the more likely it is that inflation will flare up again.
“The situation is very uncertain, but if WTI stays around $80 for a few months and then falls later this year, the direct impact on inflation could be as little as 0.3%,” said Stephen Brown, deputy chief North American economist at research firm Capital Economics.
The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.61%, or 784.67 points, to close at 47,954.74, while the S&P 500 composite index fell 0.56%, or 38.79 points, to 6,830.71. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 0.26% (58.498 points) to 22,748.986. Meanwhile, West Texas crude oil rose 6.64% to $79.62 per barrel.

Rising oil prices aren’t the only thing disrupting the market
Beyond oil prices, some economists are concerned that the economy’s resilience will keep inflation high.
“Perhaps the more important issue for the Fed is that oil prices are rising at a time when other indicators of pipeline inflationary pressures are also rising,” Brown said.
Tariffs and developments in AI are also putting upward pressure on producer prices for IT equipment, and more recently memory chips, he noted. He said consumer prices for IT equipment and mobile phones will rise this year due to rising prices of memory chips.
Brown said all of these factors could prevent the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates this year.
The CME Fed Watch tool, which uses market data to estimate the likelihood of a Fed rate cut, puts the probability of a rate cut this month at just 2.7%, from less than 11% in April to about 30% in June. Both rates are less likely to be cut than they were a month ago.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose for the fourth day in a row on these concerns about inflation. The previous increase rate was 4.131%.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a former mixed martial artist and member of the Cherokee Nation, will replace Kristi Noem.
Democrats slam Kristi Noem in DHS oversight hearing
A tense House hearing with Secretary of State Kristi Noem sparked debate as Democrats grilled her about DHS tactics and the shooting deaths of two Americans.
Political committees in Washington are stirring again. President Donald Trump announced on March 5 that Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin will become the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026, replacing Kristi Noem.
The appointment brings a politician with the unusual profile of a former mixed martial arts athlete, businessman and member of the Cherokee Nation to head one of the federal government’s most powerful agencies. From border security to disaster response, DHS directly impacts the lives of millions of people in the United States, especially those in immigrant and Latino communities.
Who is the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin?
Markwayne Mullin (born July 26, 1977) is a Republican politician and businessman from Tulsa, Oklahoma. After serving as Oklahoma’s 2nd Representative in the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2023, he won a special election in 2022 and currently serves in the Senate.
Mr. Marin is also a historic figure in Congress. He is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and is the first tribal member to serve in the Senate since Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell retired in 2005. His career combines politics, Indigenous identity, and the story of an entrepreneur raised in the family business.
What was Markwayne Marin’s career before politics?
Before entering national politics, Mr. Marin had a varied professional life. He is a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter with an undefeated record of 3-0, an aspect that President Trump himself referenced when he described him on social media as a “MAGA warrior.”
Additionally, after his father became ill in 1997, Marin took over the family business, Marin Plumbing. Over time, he expanded his business and opened other ventures, including a steakhouse restaurant. That business experience is a central part of his political speeches, where he claims to be a champion of small businesses and independent work.
What political positions has Mr. Marin championed and what does his appointment mean?
Marin is considered a close ally of Trump within the Republican Party. He has publicly supported several of the former president’s positions, including on questions about the 2020 election and proposing legislation in line with the conservative policies of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement.
Among her legislative efforts is the introduction of the Women’s Sports Protection Act, which would prohibit transgender athletes from participating in sports based on their gender identity rather than their assigned sex at birth. He also pushed for passage of a resolution to remove Trump’s impeachment proceedings from the Congressional record.
What does this change mean for the Department of Homeland Security?
The Department of Homeland Security is one of the federal government’s largest agencies, overseeing key areas such as immigration and border control, airport security, cybersecurity, and emergency response. Therefore, DHS leadership often directly influences immigration and public safety policy.
For Latino and immigrant communities in the United States, a change in leadership could result in adjustments to political priorities and security strategies. Experts recommend following official DHS announcements and consulting trusted sources such as dhs.gov and local organizations to understand potential changes to immigration programs, border controls, and protection policies.
What can immigrant communities expect?
Markwayne Mullin’s appointment will be effective March 31, 2026, according to the President’s announcement. Meanwhile, current Secretary Kristi Noem will be transferred to a new regional security initiative called “Shield of the Americas,” but details have not yet been disclosed.
The priorities of DHS’ new leadership are expected to become clearer in the coming weeks. For millions of Americans, especially those in immigrant communities, the focus will be on the central question of how security and immigration policy will play out under this new phase of federal government.

Britney Spears arrested on drunk driving charges in California
Grammy-winning pop star Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Ventura County and released shortly after an early morning traffic stop.
Fans of Britney Spears are worried about her again after she was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in California.
This isn’t the first time the Grammy-winning pop star, 44, has provoked mixed reactions from fans, including concern. And while therapists say these reactions are normal and expected, there are better ways to share your concerns about someone, especially someone you’ve never met.
“As caring and empathetic humans, we’re going to worry about someone, and that’s okay,” psychotherapist Stephanie Serkis previously told USA TODAY. “When you’re observing someone from a distance in a situation like that, people can feel helpless and want to help, but they don’t know how.”
Previously, a social media post of Spears appearing to dance while holding a knife was also a hot topic among fans. Some fans feel extra protective of the star because of her legal battle to be released from her conservatorship, which sparked the #FreeBritney movement. However, it’s important to remember that Spears’ mental health has long been the subject of deep and often inappropriate scrutiny and speculation.
Because mental health remains such a sensitive topic, and because you can’t really make assumptions about what other people are going through, it’s important to focus your comments on your own experiences rather than those of others.
“What I would suggest to people who are witnessing something like this happening is to talk about yourself, talk about your emotions, talk about what’s going on, talk about your reactions to what’s going on,” relationship therapist Philip Lewis previously told USA TODAY. “That’s what you really need to hear.”
What’s more, our feelings toward a celebrity often say more about us than they do about the celebrity, Serkis added. For example, Ms. Spears’ challenges may remind you of times in your own life when you struggled with mental health or when you dealt with a loved one in a similar situation.
“This is a really good opportunity to look at yourself and think, ‘What experiences have I had to go through to connect or identify with this?'” Serkis said. “It’s simple. You feel like you don’t fit in, you feel that society doesn’t accept you.”
And it’s not just Spears’ supporters who will benefit from such reflection. Trolls and keyboard warriors also need to take a hard look in the mirror, Lewis said.
“I would tell them the same thing,” Lewis said. “What happened to make us react this way? Is there a way to be more compassionate and empathetic?”
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Spears’ rep said in part, “We hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
“Her sons will be with her. Her loved ones will come up with the necessary plans that were overdue to prepare her for success in her well-being,” the spokesperson added.
In November, the Brennan Center for Justice state court report, and Northwest Law Review He hosted a symposium focused on state constitutions. Several state Supreme Court justices who participated in the program agreed to brief interviews. state court report” is published as a series.
Judge Elizabeth Welch was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 2020 and joined the bench in January 2021. Prior to joining the Court, her legal practice included practicing at a large law firm and extensively pro bono representation of individuals and nonprofit organizations. She also served as Vice President and Trustee of the East Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education and currently serves as Director and Vice President of the Steelcase Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving access to quality public education and fostering communities that support children and their families.
In an interview, Welch talked about the changes artificial intelligence is bringing to the practice of law, the similarities between school funding and court funding, and why law students need to prepare for a turning point in their careers.
The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
When you were in law school, what did you expect your legal career to be like?
I went to law school with a clear interest in public service. I grew up thinking I might go into politics, but as it often does, life takes detours. I had the opportunity to work at a large law firm and thought my career would be in labor and employment law. I’ve been doing that for 25 years. I never thought I would become a judge. However, I have been fortunate that my career has allowed me to do a lot of extracurricular activities that many lawyers tend to do. We are a very civic-minded group. I loved it and the extra work outside of it drew me back into public service.
I am grateful to have worked at a major law firm. They brought me on board and made sure I developed litigation skills.
What advice do you wish someone had given you when you were a law student?
It’s okay if you don’t know exactly what you want to do. Soon people will start asking, “What kind of lawyer do you want to be?” You may think you know it, or you may not know it at all. Or maybe your situation changes while you’re still in school. I wish someone had said, “It’s okay!” The pressure to know the answer to that is very high. The reality is, it’s up to you to decide, but the first choice you make may not be where you land. In fact, the odds are probably not.
The great thing about this profession is that you can change direction. You can decide that you’re really interested in this other area of law, and there’s nothing stopping you from finding a way to make it work. You can also decide that there is a niche that needs to be filled and start thinking about how to fill it. I’ve seen countless friends do it and it was scary at first. They had to find mentors outside of their usual world, and they found them because people in this profession are incredibly generous with their time and support each other.
You may not be able to practice law. Many of my friends who started out as lawyers are now in the prime of their careers but no longer practice. They run nonprofits, work for elected leaders, and serve as strategists. Please be flexible. You’ll see detours, some of which may be great. But know that sometimes you will be disappointed, and someday you may look back and be surprised that those disappointments led you in the direction of great success.
What challenges are students facing today that are different from your experience?
Generative AI is a big thing. Lawyers are notoriously slow to adapt, so I’m really proud that there are so many people working so hard to solve this problem. Although it is not yet clear what legal work will look like, I think it is safe to say that many of the tasks that new lawyers typically perform will be performed by AI. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I think it will allow businesses to accept more customers because some tasks will be faster. But we still need to train new lawyers, and it’s hard to know what that will look like.
For law students, they enter the profession at this incredibly important moment. When I was in law school, Westlaw and natural language were very important studies in legal research. This is an exponentially bigger deal. It’s a tool, so there’s a huge opportunity. And I think people who embrace that and find ways to use it productively and ethically will do well.
What do you enjoy about being a state court judge?
I really love my job. I especially love interacting with the public on a regular basis. Campaigning is very hard, but I think interaction is very important and helps us do our job better. We’re connected to what’s happening on the front lines.
I also love the administrative work we do. The state courts have a state court administrative office, and the Supreme Court is located above that office. We can focus on the system and how we can better serve our people. I am very proud to be part of a court that has focused on this issue for the past eight years. We have committees, task forces, and various groups focused on access to justice and equity. They have done incredibly specific work. For example, our courts have made serious efforts to help self-proclaimed litigants navigate the courts through in-person assistance, court kiosks, or online self-help tools. We’re always thinking of new ways to help people navigate the courthouse.
What is something people might not know about your state constitution?
It has been amended 39 times since 1963, and the number of amendments has increased significantly over the past 20 years. Direct democratic processes have become more common in Michigan.
The Michigan Constitution also protects the state’s natural resources, with specific language directing the Legislature to protect land, air, and water.
Perhaps one of the most interesting pieces of information is the proposed amendment that would protect the right to conduct stem cell research.
What is the most memorable opinion you have attended?
people vs park Coming in 2022. I wrote it. We extended the (U.S. Supreme Court) decision mirror Factor used in cases involving juvenile life without parole proceedings. We have expanded these elements beyond minors to 18 years of age. The framework was later extended to 19- and 20-year-olds in Michigan. park Cruel or Unusual Punishment Provisions of the Michigan Constitution and (U.S. Supreme Court) mirror and montgomery case. The opinion also addresses neuroscience and the evolving understanding of young people’s brains.
The second case is Mothering Justice v. Attorney GeneralThe case included direct democracy efforts to mandate paid sick leave and increase the minimum wage. Both initiatives are citizen-driven efforts and were successful in gathering enough signatures to place the initiatives on the November ballot, as required by the Michigan Constitution. However, the initiative did not appear on the ballot because Congress passed the law before the election.
Under the Michigan Constitution, this is one of the means by which the Legislature can make such a provision. The second option is for Congress to amend the provision and place it on the ballot next to the original proposal. And a third path would allow lawmakers to reject the proposed initiative, resulting in its language being placed on the ballot for voters to decide. Those are the options. But Congress chose a fourth path. They adopted initiatives, amended them in lame-duck sessions, and dramatically changed laws proposed by citizens. We determined that this violates the direct democracy provisions of the Michigan Constitution.
What are some of the challenges facing state courts?
Some of the same things our students are facing. Everywhere I go, generative AI is at the center of conversations. People don’t know what’s going to happen. How do you plan? How do you staff? What ethical rules are involved? For example, everyone generally considers video to be reliable evidence. But now we’re in this incredibly complex world of AI-generated video. The courts will have to deal with that.
On a personal level, I am currently using several AI tools. You will not spend less time preparing for oral argument, but you will be able to dig deeper into difficult questions. Easy questions are solved faster, and the really difficult questions have more time to dig deeper.
Funding is always an issue. Before this job, I spent 20 years working on public school issues, and the way funding works, at least in Michigan, is similar. There are funding units that raise money from all different sources. Some of the funding comes from federal grants, some from state appropriations, and some from local resources. The need for courts is often greatest when the economy is not doing well. Even if you have less money, you still need to meet your needs. It’s always a challenge.
There is also a sense of distrust in the system. It happens everywhere, and courts are not immune to it. In the divisive online world we live in, how can we ensure that people trust our third branch of government? Appellate court judges are of course important in shaping the law, but trial court judges are where the public engages with and builds trust in the court system. When someone goes to court for a divorce, debt collection, or landlord-tenant issue, it is important that the judge treats the parties kindly, that they feel heard, and that the parties feel that the system is fair.
How do you respond when people say the courts are too politicized?
I wish there was a magic answer to that question. Again, I truly believe in the power of the courts. They are very local and our judges are deeply involved in their communities. Local courts are a place where we can solve problems and meet people where they are. I don’t hear anyone commenting that these courts are politicized. But you will certainly hear something like that about certain state supreme court decisions. People don’t realize how many cases in state Supreme Court cases are decided unanimously or where members of different judicial ideologies agree on the outcome. There are many cases. Anything controversial gets noticed, but how often people forget what we agree with. Perhaps we need to talk about it more.
I think it’s important that judges don’t spout a lot of rhetoric, whether it’s an opinion or a bench. The best legal decisions are well-reasoned and persuasive, without throwing personal jabs at other judges. I was taught in law school and early in my legal career that if you’re using hyperbolic and insulting language, it’s not particularly persuasive legal writing. Judges should emulate professionalism and do their best to ensure the trust of the third division.

Neither Ecuador nor the United States has disclosed who they are targeting, the location of the operation, or the scope of their military operations.
US launches new military operation in Ecuador
U.S. Southern Command announced that Ecuadorian and U.S. forces have begun an operation against a designated terrorist organization in Ecuador.
Fox – 2 Detroit
The latest U.S. military operation in Ecuador signals an acceptance of past U.S. strategies to combat drug traffickers in Latin America.
U.S. Southern Command announced on March 3 that Ecuadorian and U.S. forces have begun an operation against a “designated terrorist organization” in Ecuador. Ecuadorian authorities confirmed the joint operation on March 4.
However, neither Ecuador nor the United States has disclosed who they are targeting, the location of the operation, or the scope of their military operations.
As more details emerge, here’s what you need to know about the Ecuadorian operation.
US and Ecuador claims
“The people of Ecuador, like others in the region, are experiencing the violence and corrosive effects of narco-terrorism up close and personal,” Gen. Francis L. Donovan, commander of U.S. Southern Command, said in a March 4 statement. “Now is the time for our partners in the Western Hemisphere to take decisive action against this disaster, with confidence that SOUTHCOM will support them.”
The White House referred to Donovan’s statement. The Pentagon referred questions to Southern Command. “For operational security reasons, we will not provide specific details regarding continued support for this operation,” Southern Command spokesman Stephen McLeod said in response to emailed questions.
Ecuador’s Ministry of Defense and its embassy in Washington, D.C., did not respond to requests for comment.
On March 2, President Daniel Noboa Azin said his country would launch a joint operation with the United States starting in March in a new phase against “narco-terrorism and illegal mining.” The presidential office said joint efforts will include information sharing and coordination of operations at airports, ports and other locations.
The fight against cocaine, money and militarized crime
Ecuador, led by conservative Noboa, has emerged as an ally of President Trump as the United States seeks to expand its influence in Latin America. At the same time, Ecuador, a center for international cocaine trafficking, has seen a sharp increase in crime in recent years.
Cocaine seizures have reached an all-time high globally, especially on the way to the United States, according to the United Nations and the U.S. Coast Guard. Ecuador, located on South America’s Pacific coast, shares borders with Colombia and Peru, the world’s largest producers of cocaine, according to research group Insight Crime. Ecuador currently ships about 70% of its cocaine to all parts of the world, including the United States.
“Ecuador is basically sitting on a river of cocaine,” said Adam Isacson, director of defense oversight for the nongovernmental human rights organization Washington Office on Latin America.
Illegal gold mining and illegal logging operations are also on the rise in Ecuador, said Douglas Farrar, president of security consulting firm IBI Consultants and a former foreign correspondent, adding that Ecuador has problems with criminal organizations operating in other sectors.
Farrar said turf control between criminal groups was leading to a surge in violence. Over the past decade, Ecuador has gone from one of the safest countries in Latin America to one of the most dangerous.
Isakson said corruption is also rampant in the country, which allows organized crime to flourish.
Since taking office in 2023, Noboa has taken a hard-line approach to fighting crime, similar to El Salvador’s President Nayib Boucle, another right-wing Trump ally who has overseen a decline in crime with an aggressive crackdown that has suspended democracy and judicial norms in El Salvador. But while Noboa has also been accused of human rights violations, crime in Ecuador continues to rise.
Farah said a military approach against drug cartels in Latin America could have short-term benefits. However, he added that drug traffickers typically seek to influence the government rather than fight it, resulting in deep-rooted corruption in the military ranks.
Who can the US military target?
U.S. forces have raided personnel on several ships accused of drug smuggling in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean. At least 150 people have been killed in 44 known strikes since September, according to a tally by The New York Times. The United Nations human rights chief said the tactic violated international law.
Ecuador’s ground operations signal an escalation in American military strategy.
In September, two Ecuadorian criminal organizations, Choneros and Lobos, were designated as foreign terrorist organizations by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Choneros, considered one of Ecuador’s two largest criminal organizations by the research group Insight Crime, began as a local gang before the Lobos split. Both were hardened in prison.
Mexican drug cartels are also fighting over drug trafficking routes in Ecuador. News outlets have reported a growing presence of the Sinaloa Cartel and the New Generation Cartel Jalisco, which was led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes until his death in a Mexican military operation at the end of February. Both cartels are also designated as terrorists by the State Department and operate in conjunction with Choneros and Lobos.
Similar to criminal groups in the Western Hemisphere, Albanian criminal groups also operate in Ecuador to smuggle drugs to Europe.
What is the operation?
Multiple media outlets, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported that U.S. military personnel were in Ecuador to provide advice and support but were not directly participating in the operation.
It is unclear whether the operation was a military strike against an alleged criminal group or a law enforcement raid to arrest a wanted person. U.S. officials have declined to provide information about ongoing operations.
Isacson said Ecuador is receiving increased U.S. security assistance and is on par with Colombia, which is accustomed to U.S. military assistance in its fight against drug traffickers.
At a security forum in Ecuador’s capital Quito on March 4, Gen. Henry Delgado, commander of Ecuador’s joint forces, said the original March 3 operation began the day after Mr. Noboa met with Mr. Donovan of Central Command.
“We are not afraid and no one is going to intimidate us,” Delgado said. “Because we are convinced that what we are doing is exactly what will benefit our beloved Ecuador.”
Decades of drug war
This operation is not the first time the United States has entered a Latin American country with military force in the more than 50 years since President Richard Nixon declared the eradication of drugs. Past administrations have sent aid and personnel to Colombia and Peru.
Experts said these efforts have largely failed to stem the flow of drugs. Actions in Ecuador are at risk of suffering the same fate.
“This reflects how little we have absorbed the lessons of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to fighting crime,” Farrar said. “Using counter-drug strategies against a problem that is much more multifaceted than drugs is also not the way to have a successful strategy.”
“I don’t see how this will prevent other armed groups from filling the vacuum,” Isakson said.
On March 4, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt announced that the United States would host a weekend summit in Miami with 10 Latin American countries, including Ecuador, to address drug trafficking and immigration issues. Almost every country has conservative or right-wing leaders who align with Trump.
The White House did not list Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, three large Latin American countries that also face organized crime problems. All three have left-wing leaders. Levitt said other countries may also participate in the Miami summit.
