Who will Elle Fanning bring to the Oscars?

play

AUSTIN — Elle Fanning will celebrate her first Oscar nomination for “Sentimental Value” with her boyfriend, Gus Wenner, and her mother.

“This is a family affair,” she told USA TODAY with a smile on the SXSW red carpet. Fanning, who will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards on March 15, credits “20th Century Women” director Mike Mills for the role.

“I loved making that movie more than anything. Mike Mills is someone who is really important to me,” Fanning said. “Actually, he recommended ‘Sentimental Value’ to (director) Joachim Trier. So if he hadn’t been in that movie, I don’t think I would have been in that movie.”

She was in Austin on March 12 to promote her new Apple TV series, “Margo’s Got Money Trouble,” which she stars in and executive produces with her sister Dakota Fanning. Based on the book by Luffy Thorpe.

Elle Fanning plays Margo, a college girl whose life changes when she has an affair with a college professor. Due to her experience with an unexpected pregnancy and raising a child, she is looking for ways to make money on sites like OnlyFans.

“It was kind of a hot item,” Elle Fanning said. “I was able to talk to her over Zoom because a lot of people wanted this book, and she thought I would be a good home for this book. And so we assembled this major team with David E. Kelley, A24, Michelle Pfeiffer, Apple, Nicole Kidman. It continued to grow and now we’re finally here.”

she gushed while discussing the role.

“I love playing Margo. She’s in my heart. She’s a very resilient character and a very optimistic character at all times,” the actress admitted. “When she faces some challenges in her life, she really overcomes them in unexpected ways. And that was fun to play.”

Stormy weather forecast for the weekend

0

play

Severe weather gripped much of the United States on March 12 as a combination of weather patterns dumped snow in the Northwest, scorched the Southwest, gusted winds as high as 90 mph east of the Rocky Mountains, and caused dramatic temperature swings along the East Coast.

We expect similar things to happen in the future, so be prepared. Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, told USA TODAY that snowstorms are expected in the Northern Plains and Great Lakes over the weekend of March 14-15, with another round of storms and cold in the East.

After storms spawned deadly tornadoes and 6 inches of hail in Indiana and Illinois earlier in the week, a very strong front moved through the East on March 12, causing major weather changes in the Washington, D.C., and Maryland areas.

At Reagan National Airport, temperatures of 77 degrees at 2 a.m. turned to heavy snow about 12 hours later, with snow actually accumulating in grassy areas, Oravec said. On the same day, the airport broke the record for the highest temperature when snow was observed by more than 10 degrees.

“We went from summer weather to winter weather in less than 24 hours. It was pretty dramatic,” said Oravec from the Prediction Center’s office in College Park, Maryland.

Oravec added, “This is the time of year when you see such a big contrast. But in all the years I’ve been here, I can hardly remember a day when it got close to 80 degrees and then it snowed.”

southeast storm

On March 12, strong winds and downed trees were reported across large areas of Georgia and the Carolinas, particularly along the coast of North Carolina.

Multiple structures were destroyed or damaged and injuries were reported in Bayboro, Pamlico County, North Carolina. At one point, more than two-thirds of the county was without power, according to USA TODAY’s power outage tracking information. Meteorologists from the local weather station in Morehead City are scheduled to leave on the morning of March 13 to assess damage in areas where the tornado may have occurred. However, the office warned that it may be difficult to distinguish between damage caused by high winds and damage caused by a passing tornado.

Other damage reported to the Bureau of Meteorology includes:

  • IRMO, SC – Multiple trees were down and structural damage to a home was reported.
  • GREENVILLE, N.C. – A home under construction partially collapsed.
  • ASHTON, Ga. – Two people were injured after a shed collapsed.

Strong winds expected across western United States

High wind advisories are in effect for parts of the West, including Colorado, Montana and the Dakotas.

  • Wind gusts of 99 mph were reported in Pinnacle, Flathead County, Montana.
  • On March 11, at least seven counties in Colorado experienced wind gusts exceeding 125 mph, including Sunshine in Boulder County, which experienced wind gusts of 92 mph.
  • Colorado State University announced that it will close early on March 12th and remain closed on the 13th to assess damage caused by strong winds in the Fort Collins area.

weekend weather forecast

“Heavy snow and blizzard conditions will occur across the northern Plains and Great Lakes this weekend,” Oravec said.

Meanwhile, the upper ridges are expected to set new high temperature records for much of next week across much of California and the Southwest.

Meta stocks face pressure from rising AI costs

0

Meta plans to significantly increase spending on AI this year.

play

Back in January, Meta Platform (NASDAQ:Meta) announced that it will increase capital investment from $72 billion in 2025 to up to $135 billion in 2026. The company plans to use most of the money to expand its Meta Superintelligence Lab AI division.

This strategy is not surprising since Meta uses AI algorithms across its core social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. However, this plan could backfire and put pressure on the company’s stock price, which has fallen 3% since the beginning of the year.

Could the meta splurge backfire?

Meta is the world’s largest social media company, serving 3.58 billion daily active users (DAPs) across its family of apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp) at the end of 2025. This is a 7% increase from the end of 2024.

For the full year, Meta’s revenue increased 22%, but operating margin fell 1 percentage point to 41% and EPS decreased 2%. The decline in EPS was primarily due to one-time taxes. Still, continued losses at Reality Labs (an augmented reality and virtual reality business), expansion of its AI research and engineering teams, and investments in AI infrastructure compounded the pressure. Free cash flow (FCF) decreased 16% to $43.6 billion.

Meta plans to increase spending on AI infrastructure by purchasing more GPUs, developing custom chips, and building more data centers, which will further reduce FCF in 2026. This decline will compress valuations, as many investors value technology companies based on FCF yield (the percentage of FCF generated for every dollar invested in a stock) rather than EPS.

Meta’s trailing 12-month FCF of $43.6 billion divided by its current market cap and multiplied by 100 yields an FCF yield of 2.6%. A year ago, the FCF yield was 3.3%. The FCF yield will decline further as Meta’s increased capital expenditures will reduce FCF in 2026.

Meta’s increased spending could also weigh on its operating margins, which are already under pressure from the Reality Lab investment. As a result, Meta will need a higher-margin advertising business to make up for and subsidize its losses, which could be difficult if macro headwinds cause companies to rein in advertising spending again.

Should long-term investors be concerned?

Analysts expect Meta’s revenue and EPS to both grow at a CAGR of 20% from 2025 to 2028. The company’s stock appears to be undervalued at a P/E ratio of 19 times next year, likely because concerns about short-term spending are weighing down the company’s valuation. But if you expect these investments to pay off and strengthen Meta’s dominance in the social media and digital advertising markets, Meta’s recent pullback could look like a great buying opportunity.

Study finds referral programs hurt homebuyers and sellers

0

play

A new report from the Consumer Policy Center argues that referral programs through companies like Zillow, Realtor.com, and Redfin are contributing to high commission rates and impacting the quality of service agents provide to consumers.

The report, titled “Commission-Based Housing Placement Services: Consumer Implications and Proposed Reforms,” was authored by CPC Senior Fellow Stephen Brobeck and Fellow Wendy Gilch. It found that an estimated 80% of all home sales come from referrals.

This report considers several forms of referral fees, including agent-to-agent referrals. The group argues that commission-based referral programs through major real estate platforms, which can charge up to 40% of the proceeds to the program’s brokers when a deal closes, are particularly harmful to buyers and sellers.

They found that agents who pay up to 40% of their commissions in referral fees are less likely to negotiate lower commissions. Similarly, agents may be incentivized to make buyers pay more for a home in order to earn higher commissions, or may provide lower quality service for lower-priced transactions.

It also alleges that these companies and agents violate their fiduciary duties because the “contact agent” buttons on some real estate portal sites connect consumers to purchasing agents without clearly disclosing the referral relationship.

“What struck me was how much risk and cost consumers are taking on by using these referral services that charge agents 30% to 40% for referrals,” Brobeck said. “We are not against referral fees, but this percentage is too high.”

The report names Zillow as the most prominent company with a commission-based referral program, noting that the company facilitates more than 1.4 million buyer connections annually through its Premier Agent program and approximately 10% of all home sales through its platform.

A Zillow spokesperson disputed the report, saying it had little to no evidence for its claims and relied heavily on anonymous online comments rather than verified sources.

“Referral fees are a business expense, and agents pay for marketing in the same way they spend thousands of dollars on billboards, print ads, and other marketing tools,” Zillow said. “More than that, there is no evidence in this report that the cost of referral fees actually impacts commissions.”

Zillow also said that consumers’ buying experience will not be negatively impacted when working with affiliated agents, as the company connects potential buyers with agents with a strong track record.

The report also names major platforms such as Realtor.com and Redfin as strong players, as well as companies such as Ramsey Trusted Agent, HomeLight, Sold.com., Home and Money, and Agent Pronto.

This is not the first time the impact of commission-based referral fees has been considered in recent months. A class action lawsuit filed against Zillow in November 2025 accuses the company of deceiving buyers into working with Zillow-affiliated agencies and concealing large referral fees.

The report calls for mandatory up-front disclosure of referral fees and urges consumers to think twice before contacting referral services.

“I would like to see buyer’s agents disclose if they are compensating Zillow, Realtor.com or other referral companies, and at what percentage,” Brobeck said. “Fees have to be disclosed, so it’s fairly easy for consumers to understand what’s going on financially.”

Tennessee Titans’ new uniforms borrow magic from Houston Oilers’ iconic look

0

play

Usually, in the world of fashion, what’s old is new. (If you don’t know about the industry’s 20-year cycle, you’ve got this dad rock, Air Jordan, sweats, and baseball hat enthusiast right in front of you. But I digress.)

And if this rule of thumb holds true for Milan or Paris Fashion Week, or even the highly coveted teenage demographic, why doesn’t it apply to the NFL, where expanding uniform closets and retro looks have been all the rage in recent years?

Pro football fans certainly had flashbacks to March 12, when the Tennessee Titans unveiled a sleek new look that was very reminiscent of the brand from decades ago. This callback seems likely to appeal to more casual football fashionistas (by the way, can fashionistas even be casual?). Titans has gone through various iterations and numerous color combinations since 1999, not to mention bold design choices on the shoulders and hips, simplifying an overly busy thread. Similar to how the Arizona Cardinals went in 2023, going from a mess of different panels and oddly tapered piping and striping to something more Ohio State-adjacent… if you’re interested. that Some kind of thing.

(FWIW, the Titans are ranked 29th out of 32 teams in the league in USA TODAY Sports’ latest NFL Uniform Power Rankings.)

Also? The Titans will no doubt gaslight some of their die-hard supporters, namely Houston fans, especially Houston Oilers fans who lost their beloved “Love Ya Blue” team when they relocated from Texas to Tennessee after the 1996 season. They played for two years as the Tennessee Oilers and re-raised the banner as the Titans in 1999, which was notably the only year the franchise qualified for the Super Bowl…which they lost to the “Greatest Show on the Turf” St. Louis Rams, another organization caught up in franchise free agency in the stupid 1990s.

But there was a fundamental difference between the Oilers, who collected stakes in the Volunteer State, and the Browns, who fled Cleveland for Baltimore in 1996. Meanwhile, while the Browns left their uniforms, wordmarks, colors and records in Cleveland — renaming themselves the Ravens in the process and enabling the Browns’ rebirth as an expansion team in 1999 — the Oilers took all their intellectual property, history and logo with them. Residents of Houston, Tennessee are very angry.

Houston eventually welcomed the Texans in 2002, still the youngest organization in the NFL, but a team with an even worse success track record than the Oilers. The Oilers won at least two AFL titles in the 1960s and lost one game to the legendary Steel Curtain Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s in the AFC Championship Game. The Texans remain the only NFL team to never reach the conference title game.

And Thursday night’s revelations only reopen wounds that have barely healed.

What do the Tennessee Titans’ new uniforms look like?

In a nutshell, these are basically modified versions of the classic Oilers uniforms. The jersey numbers have a simple white, red, and “Titans Blue” color scheme, and appear to have almost the same font. (And yes, “Titans Blue” is almost identical to Pantone’s identical twin of the Oilers’ gorgeous “Columbia Blue.”)

There are subtle differences. The blue home jerseys have “Titans” written above the red-trimmed number, while the white roadie jerseys have “Tennessee” written on them instead. The stripes along the centerline of the helmet and on the sides and shoulders of the pants are also distinctive. It has a wide stripe outlined in red and a series of very narrow “Titans Blue” stripes with a dark outline in between.

What about the new logo? At least, it doesn’t remind you of the Oilers’ iconic oil derrick. Instead, it’s a stripped-down version of the logo the Titans have used since their inception in 1999. The outer fireball effect is gone, and the stylized shading of the “T” that doubles as a dagger is gone. The three stars representing Tennessee’s state flag are left in place and, oddly enough, appear to have been added, grouped more closely together, near the armpit of the jersey.

Shop new Tennessee Titans jerseys and gear.

There’s none of the navy palette that the Titans have always featured (similar to the hue used in the state flag) or the gray and silver trim that has long been a prominent part of the presentation.

To summarize, the effect looks a lot like an Oilers uniform with a modified Titans logo on it…which ironically (or isn’t it?) looks like an “O”.

“We’ve been talking and listening to our fans, and there’s a clear desire to have the Titans and their teams on the field in these striking colors, just as we have from Houston in 1960 to Memphis to Vanderbilt to when we played at (Nashville’s) Nissan Stadium,” Titans president and CEO Burke Nihil said last year.

“This year, I’m going to emphasize that and change the primary color to Titans Blue.”

Will the Texans ever get permission to wear an Oilers throwback?

Hehe. The Titans have dealt with retro looks from time to time over the years, even as recently as 2024, and while they don’t seem to have any plans to do so again, they’re still reluctant to share it. Much to the delight of salty Houston fans, the Texans defeated the Titans in both 2023 and 2024 at their home in Nashville, decked out in Oilers throwbacks.

But now, after being away from the Oilers for five seasons (two more than Cleveland had to wait), those in Houston will be inspired every time they watch Tennessee play.

And certainly, the Oilers’ memories remain strong in H-Town. The Texans have developed an alternate uniform in 2024 with trim very close to Columbia Blue. The University of Houston football team even debuted imitation Oilers uniforms in 2023, prompting the NFL to demand that they stop wearing the uniforms.

The Titans, who are coming off a 3-14 consecutive season, have made a ton of free agent acquisitions in recent days and now own the No. 4 pick in the upcoming draft. The infusion of talent should further support second-year QB Cam Ward and first-year coach Robert Saleh, who should figuratively look even better between the lines in 2026. Literally, they definitely will.

now? Let’s have dreams and hopes. Perhaps in these divisive days, it’s time to throw past history with Houston under the bridge. Perhaps by lending some of its past history, oil derricks and the like, to Houston’s current team.

FTC to send $47 million to renters who were misled by their landlords. Who is eligible?

0

play

More than 400,000 people will receive checks as part of a $47.2 million settlement against one of the nation’s largest landlords, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC announced the settlement on Wednesday, March 11, saying the payments would go to customers of home rental company Invitation Homes. The company, which the FTC calls one of the largest single-family home landlords in the U.S., was accused of “a series of illegal acts” in a lawsuit filed by the FTC in September 2024.

The lawsuit alleges Invitation Homes engaged in deceptive practices, including misleading applicants about lease costs, charging undisclosed fees for services such as “smart home technology” and “utility management,” and unfairly withholding tenants’ security deposits. The company was also accused of fabricating unreasonable fees for tenants to move out, resulting in consumers paying unreasonable fees for normal wear and tear, pre-occupancy damage and renovations.

According to the complaint, Invitation Homes is charging excessive exit fees, returning only 39.2% of the total security deposits returned to consumers between 2020 and 2022, compared to the national average of 63.9%.

Some of the mandatory junk fees could total $1,700 per year per renter, and prospective tenants also paid non-refundable reservation and application fees ranging from $55 to up to $500, according to the complaint. The FTC said application fees alone generated $18 million in profits for Invitation Homes between 2019 and 2024, and accused the company of lying about pre-occupancy inspections and forcing tenants to contend with “significant disrepair.”

As part of the settlement, Invitation Homes agreed to pay $48 million in compensation to affected renters. The company was also subject to several rules, including full disclosure of lease prices and a new system for “fair” refunding of security deposits.

In a September 2024 statement, then-FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said, “No American should have their rent increased or forced from their home because of illegal tactics by a corporate landlord. The FTC will continue to use all of its tools to protect renters from illegal business practices.”

Who will receive the Invitation Homes settlement?

As part of the $47.2 million agreement, the FTC will send checks to 444,131 affected consumers.

To be eligible to receive a portion of the payment, a consumer must:

  • Paid $45 or more in qualifying fees or charges to Invitation Homes from January 2021 to September 2024.
  • I have not yet received a credit or refund from Invitation Homes.

The recipient must cash the check within 90 days. Consumers with questions about the settlement should contact the Refund Administrator, Rust Consulting, Inc. (800) 804-6915 or email info@InvitationHomesRefund.com.

Kylie Armbruster Humphries hands Olympic medal to President Trump

Kylie Armbruster Humphries, who won six Olympic medals, thanked President Trump for expanding IVF treatment that helped her give birth to her son, Alden, in June 2024.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump recognized six-time Olympic bobsledder Kylie Armbruster Humphries as part of a Women’s History Month celebration at the White House, and she returned the favor with Olympic honors.

Armbruster Humphreys, a naturalized citizen of the United States from Canada, said it was an honor to win the medal in his adopted home. She said she was especially happy to achieve this honor as a mother who was told she would never be physically and mentally fit enough to win a medal again. He won two bronze medals for the United States at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

“My ultimate dream was to become a mother and stand on the Olympic podium,” she said. “This year, I was able to do it with my son, who is one and a half years old. To win these two bronze medals, it feels like a gold medal. It really is. He is my gold medal and will always be with me for the rest of my life.”

Armbruster-Humphries thanked President Trump for signing an executive order that expands in vitro fertilization treatment to have children and bans biological males from participating in women’s sports. She gave birth to her son, Alden, in June 2024 after two and a half years of IVF treatment after being diagnosed with stage IV endometriosis in 2021.

Armbruster Humphries, 40, made his first Olympic appearance in 2010, representing Canada in Vancouver. She also competed in Sochi in 2014 and Pyeongchang in 2018 before transferring to Team USA in 2019. She became a US citizen in 2021, five years after immigrating to the US with her husband Travis Armbruster in 2016.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Armbruster Humphries won the bronze medal in the women’s monobob on February 16, and Elana Myers-Taylor of Team USA won the gold medal. Armbruster Humphreys teamed up with Jasmine Jones in the women’s two-person bobsled on February 21 to win her second bronze medal at the Milan-Cortina Games.

Olympic athletes can award medals called the Order of the Olympic Ikko to those who have made a meaningful contribution to reaching the podium. Armbruster Humphries tearfully submitted a photo of herself to President Trump.

“It’s another great honor and a dream come true to have my one-year-old son follow me on the Olympic podium,” she said. “I would like to encourage all mothers out there to follow their dreams and not let anyone limit what they believe they can do.”

She said she believes this is the first medal ever awarded to a president.

“I knew I liked her,” Trump said. “It’s really nice.”

Watch Great Wolf Lodge guests try the new and viral “Ranch” milkshake

Reviews have been posted and Great Wolf Lodge’s newest and most talked about concoction turns out to be pretty fun.

While the limited-time lunch milkshake was taking the internet by storm, several people, including Parade writer Devon Scherer, decided to try the dessert (dip?) for themselves.

“It tasted really good, but it also made me feel naughty, like when you order something wild and comforting after a night of drinking,” Scherer said in an article published March 10. “I kept drinking and drinking.”

Scherer said it tasted like ranch, but a little sweeter.

Great Wolf Lodge guests who posted their own reviews seemed to feel the same way, calling it “really good.”

“You can taste the ranch flavor, but it’s not very strong,” she said in her review. “…It’s not bad.”

Launched in honor of National Farm Day, which was recognized on March 10, the shake is blended with “vanilla ice cream and ranch dressing,” served with crispy chicken, carrots, celery and whipped cream, and features a sweet and salty lime rim.

This “sweet and tangy” menu item is $7.99 and available at any resort location until May 20th.

Internet shaking is “really annoying”

Great Wolf Lodge’s “Lunch Milkshake” sparked a pretty strong reaction online.

“This is not right and I’m genuinely annoyed,” one person responded on X (formerly Twitter). Another user added: “That’s wrong on every level of time and space.”

“I’m getting ready to throw up now,” one person wrote, while Great Wolf Lodge responded with a laughing emoji: “That’s what a ranch shake will do. The atmosphere alone is enough to make your stomach flip.”

When someone asked “why?” the resort spoke up again. “Honestly, the shaking feels like chaos in a cup. ‘Why?!'” That’s the only correct response. ”

Even R&B legend Dionne Warwick commented on a post that mentioned milkshakes: “You’re just wasting food in your kitchen.”

Other companies have developed desserts using this popular condiment in the past. In 2023, Hidden Valley Ranch launched an ice cream flavor.

Federal judge pauses construction of ICE detention center in Maryland

0

play

WASHINGTON—A federal judge in Maryland on Wednesday (March 11) issued a temporary restraining order halting construction on an immigration detention center that the state had sued over environmental concerns.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown argued that President Donald Trump’s administration did not conduct a proper environmental study or receive public input. When the state filed its lawsuit in February, Brown said the federal government spent more than $100 million to convert a 54-acre warehouse in Washington County, Maryland, into a detention center that could hold 1,500 people at a time.

U.S. District Judge Brendan Herson granted Maryland’s request for an injunction to immediately halt construction for up to 14 days while the court considers Maryland’s broader legal challenges.

“The State has shown that there is a strong likelihood that Defendants failed to comply with their obligations under the (National Environmental Policy Act),” the judge wrote. “Defendants do not appear to have ‘seriously considered’ the potential environmental impacts of their plans for the Williamsport warehouse.”

The Department of Homeland Security, which has federal oversight of immigration, previously said DHS was prepared to work with state authorities to expand capacity. The state also previously denied Maryland’s argument that the lawsuit was based on environmental concerns.

The Trump administration’s push for immigration enforcement and deportations has drawn widespread condemnation from advocacy groups, calling it a violation of free speech and due process rights. Rights experts also say enforcement policies create a dangerous environment, especially for minorities.

President Trump has aimed his actions to stop illegal immigration and improve domestic security.

Brown ruled in victory.

“Temporarily, this ruling will stop the construction of this large-scale immigration detention center while our case continues to play out in court. We cannot allow DHS and ICE to rush through the appropriate legal process in their haste to increase deportations,” Brown said.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA scoring record

play

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is alone.

The current NBA Most Valuable Player scored at least 20 points in consecutive games, surpassing Hall of Fame icon Wilt Chamberlain with 127 points. Gilgeous-Alexander made his mark with a jumper from near the top of the key midway through the third quarter of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s game against the Boston Celtics on Thursday, March 12.

Playing in front of his home crowd, the fans in attendance were hoping for a record as Gilgeous-Alexander caught the ball and erupted in cheers as he swung it around.

Gilgeous-Alexander was a little slow to start the first quarter, but he finished the period with 10 points after attacking the rim and getting to the line. He made 2 of 3 field goals and 5 of his first six free throws in the period. Oklahoma City added seven points in the second period as it tried to cut Boston’s lead before the end of the first half.

Four-time All-Star Gilgeous-Alexander, 27, entered the night as the NBA’s second-leading scorer behind Lakers guard Luka Doncic with 31.7 points per game.

Gilgeous-Alexander, one of the most consistent players in the NBA, lined up with Chamberlain on March 9 when the Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets. In that game, he had 35 points, 15 assists, and nine rebounds, making the eventual game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds.

This record demonstrates both Gilgeous-Alexander’s availability and steady production. The last time he failed to score more than 20 points in a game was early last season, when he scored 18 points in a win over the Spurs on October 30, 2024.

Gilgeous-Alexander and Chamberlain are the only two players in NBA history to score 20 points in at least 100 consecutive games. The following players are on the list: Chamberlain (92), Oscar Robertson (79), Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant (72), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (71).

But Chamberlain was pouring in points during his winning streak. In those 126 games, he averaged 49.2 points per game. The streak began on October 19, 1961 and ended on January 19, 1963, when Chamberlain was ejected just four minutes into the game.

Another area where Gilgeous-Alexander outperformed Chamberlain during their respective winning streaks was in the win-loss column. Entering Thursday night’s game against Boston, the Thunder were 120-24 in games in which Gilgeous-Alexander reached at least 20 points. Chamberlain’s Warriors lost just 66 wins and 60 losses during the winning streak.

Brianna LaPaglia slams Ozempic use, says everyone she knows uses Ozempic

Briana “Chickenfry” LaPaglia slams the use of Ozempic for weight loss.

The 26-year-old reality TV star and Barstool Sports personality spoke candidly about the increasing use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic on TikTok on March 10, saying everyone she knows is taking them.

“This is not tea, it’s not shade, it’s not hate. It’s just field research,” LaPaglia said in the video. “Every (expletive) word I know is on Ozempic. People who don’t need Ozempic, okay?”

LaPaglia claimed that people who “don’t need Ozempic” are also using the drug, adding, “It’s like I’m on Ozempic.” He added that Ozempić was not needed, although “we may lose some players”.

“You’re going to die. You’re all going to die,” LaPaglia said, ending the video.

GLP-1 use increases in the US

A Gallup National Health and Welfare Index study released Oct. 28 found that use of GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, will more than double among both men and women from 2024 to 2025, with 12.4% of respondents admitting to taking the drugs, compared to 5.8% in February 2024, when the research firm first measured it.

The drug, approved as a weight loss drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2021, is booming as an effective way to lose weight, stay full longer and reduce food intake, USA TODAY previously reported.

What are the side effects of GLP-1 drugs?

However, weight loss drugs are not without side effects, which include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, heartburn and bloating, fatigue, dehydration, and muscle weakness. Patients may also experience hair thinning when taking high doses over a long period of time, especially when combined with low calorie intake. More rare but serious side effects include acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallbladder problems, and blindness; seek immediate medical attention.

Several GLP-1 manufacturers, including Denmark’s Novo Nordisk, which makes Ozempic, Wigovy, Libersus, Victoza and Saxenda, and Indiana-based Eli Lilly, which makes Trulicity, Maunjaro and Zepbound, also face multiple lawsuits alleging the drug makers failed to adequately warn about the risk of certain serious injuries, USA TODAY previously reported.

The first such lawsuit was filed in 2023, and at least 4,400 patients have filed suit since then, now part of a consolidated federal and state lawsuit, and that number is expected to grow.

Other celebrities have also promoted the use of GLP-1

Although LaPaglia opposes the use of weight-loss drugs, “The View” co-hosts, including guest Savannah Chrisley, spoke out about the drugs and how they have changed their lives last month.

“We all did it,” said Joy Behar, who admitted she lost 25 pounds on GLP-1, and Whoopi Goldberg added, “We were all at this table.”

“GLP-1 is cool,” Chrisley added.

Other celebrities who have been open about using weight loss drugs to lose weight include Serena Williams, Rebel Wilson, Andy Cohen, and Oprah Winfrey.

Williams said she had made every effort to get to a healthy weight, but had no success until using the GLP-1 drug.

“The misconception is that it’s a shortcut,” she previously said. “As an athlete and as someone who’s done everything, I’ve never been able to gain the weight I need to be healthy. Trust me, I don’t take shortcuts.”

Winfrey, on the other hand, said she began taking GLP-1 because she recognized that obesity was a medical condition to be treated, not a lack of discipline or willpower. She knows the drug is “for life” and sometimes takes the injections every 10 to 12 days instead of weekly because she can still feel the effects of the previous injections.

Although Winfrey experienced side effects such as indigestion, she said the reward was worth the inconvenience.

“I feel more alive and more vibrant than ever before,” Winfrey said.

Strait of Hormuz under threat from mines during Iran war

0

play

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping lanes and a chokepoint for about a fifth of the world’s oil, has become a flashpoint in the Iran war after a ship laden with explosives attacked a fuel tanker and set it on fire, killing at least one crew member, Reuters reported.

Iran has warned it will not allow commercial ships to sail while the fighting continues, and the threat is already changing behavior at sea as shipping companies withdraw from the strait.

Despite U.S. attacks on minelayers, insurance companies have canceled coverage, traffic has plummeted, and dozens of ships remain anchored offshore. Even the threat of an attack in a narrow channel is enough to disrupt the market and drive up prices.

Here’s what you need to know about sea mines and why they pose a new danger to the Strait of Hormuz.

What are sea mines? How do they work?

A mine is an explosive device placed underwater and left to detonate when a ship passes nearby or makes contact. Unlike missiles and torpedoes, mines do not need to be aimed. they are waiting.

There are several types, but the most common are:

  • contact mineexplodes when a ship physically collides with it.
  • affect the minecaused by the ship’s magnetic field, engine noise, or underwater pressure.
  • bottom mineIt is located on the ocean floor and explodes when a ship passes over it.
  • moored mineconnected below the earth’s surface by cables
  • limpet mineoften attached directly to the hull by divers or small boats.

Why are landmines such strategic weapons?

Demining is slow, expensive and dangerous. Even after the fighting has stopped, minesweeping can take weeks or months, and shipping continues to be disrupted long after the headlines fade.

This is why military planners often describe sea mines as military weapons as well as weapons of economic warfare. According to NATO.

Have mines been used here before?

yes. During the 1980s “tanker war” between Iran and Iraq, warship mines damaged commercial ships in the Persian Gulf, forcing the United States and its allies to carry out large-scale escort and demining operations.

Judge sides with New York taqueria in lawsuit over spicy salsa

0

“Mexican food, especially salsa, is often spicy,” U.S. District Judge Dale Ho wrote in an opinion.

play

A New York City taqueria is in trouble after a judge ruled against a German tourist who sued the restaurant for selling dangerously spicy salsa.

Faikal Manz sued Los Tacos No. 1 for $100,000 in damages after eating the spicy salsa at a New York City restaurant in 2024, alleging he suffered gastrointestinal upset, high blood pressure and emotional distress, according to a court filing obtained by USA TODAY.

Manz, a sales engineer from Germany who was visiting New York City at the time, claimed the restaurant failed to warn customers about the spiciness of the salsa. Mantz also said he developed blisters on his tongue after eating them.

But U.S. District Judge Dale Ho wrote an opinion last month in favor of Los Tacos No. 1, saying spiciness is “often the key” to salsa.

USA TODAY reached out to Muntz and Los Tacos No. 1 for comment on March 12, but did not immediately receive a response.

German tourist says spicy salsa was a ‘huge shock’

In her complaint, Manz said she wanted to eat tacos while on vacation in New York in August 2024 because “there is no possibility of eating tacos in my small hometown in Germany.”

After finding the restaurant online, he went to Los Tacos No. 1 and purchased three tacos. Mantz said he then added two types of salsa to his tacos, which he purchased in the restaurant’s self-service area.

After eating the salsa-topped food, Mantz said her tongue and mouth “immediately started to burn” and her Apple Watch recorded an increase in her pulse rate.

“For someone like me, who lives in Germany and doesn’t eat spicy food, it was a huge shock both physically and mentally,” Manz said in the lawsuit.

“Spice is often the key,” says the judge.

Mr. Ho sided with Los Tacos No. 1 in part because Mr. Muntz was unable to prove that the restaurant was negligent. Additionally, the judge said, he did not provide any evidence that other customers were injured by the salsa.

The judge also said the restaurant was not liable for injuries caused by the “unusual characteristics” of the consumer’s salsa.

“Mexican food, especially salsa, is often spicy,” Ho writes. “In fact, when it comes to salsa, spice is often the key.”

Apparently, spicy salsa wasn’t Manz’s only obsession on the trip. He also filed a lawsuit over Walmart’s Wi-Fi policies. The case was dismissed, according to court filings.

TSA agents say they’re sleeping in their cars during the shutdown.

Unpaid employees at the Transportation Security Administration say staffing pressures are slowing down airport security lines and increasing financial stress.

play

  • Transportation Security Administration employees are working without pay during the partial government shutdown.
  • Many TSA employees are struggling financially, with some reporting zero or negative bank account balances.
  • Long security lines at airports are a result of the closure, as some employees have other jobs.

With the partial government shutdown continuing and Transportation Security Administration employees working without pay, many are struggling to make ends meet.

The partial shutdown began in mid-February after Congress failed to pass funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA. Approximately 50,000 TSA employees have continued to work, but have not been paid their regular paychecks while the funding lapses, raising concerns about staffing shortages and absenteeism as spring break travel increases.

“Many employees have reported to me that their bank accounts are zero or negative,” Johnny Jones, secretary-treasurer of AFGE TSA Council 100 and a Dallas-based TSA official, told USA TODAY. “There’s no money for day care, there’s no money for food. They just want to know why they’re not getting paid when they have the money to shoot missiles at other countries.”

Friday, March 13 will mark the first time TSA employees will not be paid their full pay.

As TSA agents look for ways to fill their own financial gaps, Jones acknowledged that airport security lines have gotten longer.

“A significant portion of our employees perform other duties outside of their TSA duties,” he said. “I hope they don’t beg at the airport. Some are staying there instead of leaving the airport, sleeping in their cars to save money on gas and enhance their working lives.”

As a result, fewer employees are reporting to work, with White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt saying in a March 11 social media post, “300 (TSA) employees have quit,” citing a CBS News report. According to the same CBS report, the percentage of officers on duty has more than doubled since the shutdown began, with some airports seeing more than 50% of TSA’s front-line workers absent on some days.

“Travelers are currently facing TSA lines of up to nearly three hours at some major airports, resulting in flight cancellations and significant delays during peak travel times,” TSA previously told USA TODAY in a statement. “These frontline heroes, who received only a portion of their paycheck earlier this month, are now facing not being paid their full paycheck for the first time, leading to financial hardship, absenteeism, and devastating staffing shortages.”

Some airports, such as Denver International Airport (DEN), have begun collections to provide basic assistance to TSA officers.

“Again, DEN’s federal employees are working tirelessly without pay to ensure the efficient and safe operation of our airports. TSA employees have just missed their first paycheck and as we enter the busy spring break travel period, we want to do what we can to ease the stress of this moment,” DEN CEO Phil Washington said in a statement. “That’s why we’re asking the public, passengers, and other airport employees to donate grocery store and gas gift cards to help make this moment a little more bearable for federal employees.”

The collection is intended to help TSA employees purchase essential items while they are not receiving a paycheck.

“Gift cards donated are from stores such as King Soopers, Safeway, Walmart, Costco, and Target. Ideal gift cards include stores that sell both gas and food. Gift cards should only have a $10 or $20 denomination. Visa gift cards are not accepted,” the event description states.

Jones added that other airports have similar philanthropic efforts, but it can be difficult to get and distribute support at larger airports. He noted that as a result of the lack of funding, some TSA employees have lost their housing because they are unable to pay rent on their monthly leases.

“We took an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the people, and the people elected to Congress took the same oath, but they are not doing their jobs and they are not funding the government,” Jones said. “We are caught up in partisan politics.”

Does TSA PreChek, Global Entry still work?

Despite the disruption, DHS and TSA say rapid testing programs remain available. TSA PreCheck continues to work, allowing registered travelers to pass through dedicated lanes and generally not having to remove their belts or light jackets during screening. Under pressure from airlines and lawmakers concerned about further delays at airport checkpoints, the agency reversed previous plans to suspend the program, but officials warned that TSA PreCheck lanes could be closed on a case-by-case basis depending on staffing levels during the closure.

DHS announced that the Global Entry Line will reopen on March 11, saying the changes are intended to reduce confusion for travelers during the closure.

How can I check the wait times in the TSA line at the airport?

Travelers worried about long security lines can check real-time wait time estimates before heading to the airport.

TSA publishes historical and live checkpoint wait time information on the MyTSA mobile app and TSA website, which travelers can search by airport and time of day.

As the government shutdown continues, travelers should be aware that some information on the TSA website has not been updated, the agency said in a Feb. 17 statement. Banners on the TSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection websites warn: “Due to the expiration of federal funding, this website will no longer be actively managed.”

This differs from the previous government shutdown, which lasted from October to November 2025, when TSA security wait times continued to update as usual.

Now, the TSA confirmed in an email to USA TODAY that both the MyTSA mobile app and the agency’s wait time tracker are down due to the partial U.S. government shutdown, which is now in its fourth week.

The app is also supposed to show if TSA PreCheck lanes are open. However, some airports publish their own checkpoint wait times on the airport’s official website or social media feed. Checking these before leaving for the airport will help travelers decide whether they need to arrive earlier than usual.

play

Target is redesigning its baby department and creating a new “Baby Boutique” to make it easier to shop for strollers, car seats and other big-ticket items.

The boutique-style concept will launch in around 200 stores starting in March, and the updated online experience will be available on March 15th. Target has not yet shared all participating stores.

These changes are part of Target’s broader efforts to simplify baby shopping and respond to parents’ demand for specific brands.

“Guests trust Target to be there for them during life’s biggest milestones,” Amanada Nush, Target’s senior vice president of essentials and beauty merchandising, said in a statement. “We focus on providing products that busy families love, at prices they expect, and we combine expert guidance with fun, easy-to-shop spaces to make preparing for a newborn feel special and practical.”

What is Target Baby Boutique?

Baby Boutique offers a curated selection of premium baby brands including UPPAbaby, Bugaboo, Stokke and Doona. Nearly 2,000 new items from brands such as Wildbird, Nemah and Toddlerkind have been added to the retailer, including some for the first time.

Strollers and child seats are displayed side by side, making it easier to compare and consider. The Baby Boutique experience is designed to simplify the shopping process for parents, who often spend three times more time researching baby products than any other retail category, according to the announcement.

The boutique setup is designed to resemble a baby specialty store, featuring more interactive displays and a carefully selected selection of products.

In addition to baby boutiques, Target is introducing seasonal “Discover” destinations in 1,000 stores to help shoppers find baby gifts and birthday gifts.

Target adds free baby concierge service

Target is also piloting a free “Baby Concierge” service that provides parents with one-on-one expert guidance when selecting products.

Starting in March, shoppers will be able to book in-person appointments at Baby Boutique stores. Virtual consultations are already available.

How many Target stores are there in the US?

According to Target’s website, there are currently 1,989 Target stores nationwide.

Suspect dies, security guard injured in Michigan synagogue attack

0

play

A Michigan man has died after driving into one of the nation’s largest synagogues, which also includes an early childhood center, local officials said.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the suspect drove into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit. A synagogue security guard opened fire on the vehicle, which caught fire. The suspect’s cause of death remains unknown.

“As you have all heard, Temple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who confronted and neutralized our security guards, who are true heroes,” synagogue staff said in a statement March 12. “Our teachers followed their training and kept our children safe and peaceful.”

Bouchard said one security guard was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle, but is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported. Authorities were able to evacuate the temple school, which was in session at the time of the attack.

“Everyone is safe,” synagogue staff said in a statement. “All 140 students at Susan and Harold Ross Early Childhood Center, our wonderful staff, our brave teachers, and our brave security guards are all safe and sound.”

Bouchard said there was no active threat to the community and local police lifted the shelter-in-place advisory around 3 p.m. local time.

Tears and smiles from childhood, parents leave Temple Israel after attack

Immediately after the attack, parents rushed to the scene to search for their children who attended the temple school.

One mother, her eyes red and frantic, told police at the scene: “I’m trying to get to my baby.” The policeman let her through.

Three school buses carrying children were safely escorted by police to a safe location at the nearby Shenandoah Country Club. The children held hands with each other and with their teachers.

“Okay, kids,” one teacher said to the children.

At around 3:30 p.m. local time, more than 100 adults and children, some in the arms of their parents and others carried on their shoulders, were seen leaving Temple Israel.

The children reached out and touched the existing fire engine. Some parents and children were laughing and high-fiving each other. Some parents cried.

Attack under investigation

Authorities said the suspect’s car crashed into a door in the synagogue hallway and burst into flames after being fired by security guards. Video from the scene shows smoke billowing from the building.

Bouchard said authorities were working to determine if there were any potential explosives in the area. Bomb-sniffing dogs and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on scene. Federal authorities are expected to take the lead in future investigations.

It is not yet clear whether anyone else was involved, Bouchard added. He also said authorities do not know if the suspect fired any shots during the attack.

Attack occurs at one of the country’s largest synagogues

Temple Israel bills itself as “the nation’s largest Reform synagogue,” with more than 12,000 members. According to its website, its history dates back to 1941.

In January, the FBI led an active shooter training exercise with Temple Israel clergy and staff, according to a post on X from the bureau’s Detroit field office. The training will allow staff and clergy to “practice the decision-making process of the run, hide, fight principles and take the actions necessary to survive,” the post said.

The shooting occurred amid growing concerns about domestic attacks amid the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran. Bouchard said authorities will investigate the suspect’s motives, but it’s too early to speculate.

Trump, other officials react

President Donald Trump addressed the shooting in an unrelated news conference.

“I want to send my love to Michigan’s Jewish community and everyone in the Detroit area following the attack on a Jewish synagogue earlier today,” President Trump said at a Women’s History Month event. “I’ve been briefed – I’ve been fully briefed – and as awful as it is, it’s still going on. We’re going to thoroughly investigate the facts of the incident. It’s just unbelievable that something like this could happen.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer thanked law enforcement for their quick action in a statement.

“This is heartbreaking,” she said. “Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Anti-Semitism and violence have no place in Michigan.”

Let’s see how much more we will pay in Iran war

0

Americans are paying more as gas prices soar in states in the wake of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on February 28th. Iran retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil trade.

As of March 11, U.S. states have recorded increases in regular gasoline prices compared to a month ago, ranging from 30 cents more in Hawaii to 87 cents more in Arizona, according to AAA data.

The national average price reached $3.58 per gallon, an increase of 23% from the previous month. This monthly spike ranks as the ninth largest since 2020, when USA TODAY analyzed AAA data using a 30-day rolling window.

USA TODAY previously reported that consumers will begin to feel financial pressure as gas prices reach $3.50 per gallon.

As the conflict continues, prices are expected to rise further due to supply constraints and widespread economic uncertainty.

The conflict continued as of March 11, with three ships reportedly targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. In less than two weeks, more than 1,000 people have been killed in Iran and across the region, including seven U.S. military personnel.

The dead included at least 175 people, most of them children, who were at a girls’ school in southern Iran when a US Tomahawk missile struck the building on February 28, The New York Times reported, citing a US military investigation.

The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of the world’s oil trade. President Donald Trump is facing pressure to address rising gas prices and his administration’s Iran strategy.

Oil prices fell on Tuesday after President Trump’s comments that the war was “very complete” and would be over “soon,” but rose about 5.1% on Wednesday after reports that Iran threatened to cause further disruption to oil supplies.

Analysts say that while oil prices can fluctuate quickly, pump prices tend to lag those changes. That means relief to gas stations could be delayed even if oil prices fall.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, crude oil accounts for about half of what people pay at the pump. The other half includes refining, distribution and marketing, and taxes.
