Beartooth singer Caleb Shomo recalls coming out to wife Fleur Shomo
Beartooth vocalist Caleb Shomo remembers how difficult it was for him to come out to Fleur Shomo, his wife of 14 years.
Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo and his wife have ended their marriage after the musician announced that he is gay.
Shomo, 33, and his wife Fleur Shomo mutually agreed to end their 14-year marriage, according to a July 13 Los Angeles Superior Court filing obtained by USA TODAY. The two married in April 2012, but have no children.
The metalcore rocker came out as “proudly gay” in an Instagram post on May 23rd.
“This is something I’ve been unraveling and thinking about for quite some time in my life. It’s been difficult to control the emotions surrounding this subject and figure out what to do with this fact,” he wrote.
Fleur Shomme also addressed her husband’s announcement in a statement on Instagram on May 23, calling this period “very confusing and hurtful” for the couple, but making it clear that she “will always love, protect and support Caleb.”
Caleb Shomo tells his wife about coming out
On the June 10 episode of the “Dis respectly” podcast, the “In Between” singer opened up about his conversation with Fuller.
“I was just…rolling my eyes and trying really hard to verbalize things, and I’m really having a hard time verbalizing things,” he said. “I’m a highly verbal processor and this is obviously very intense. I’m so nervous and scared in this situation that it’s really, really hard to verbalize and I couldn’t verbalize it very well. I tried my best.”
He said he felt there was “someone else out there who was the real me” and, although he felt “terrified,” he had a revelation that he had to do something about it.
“I was in the shower and I was trying to say to myself what I’ve had so many times. Thankfully, I kind of punched myself in the face (and said), ‘It’s…time,'” he said. “And I talked to my then-wife about how I felt about men and that I’d never allowed myself to explore that before. But I have to say, I can’t do that. And it was just a path from there.”
He said he received “mixed” reactions after coming out, adding: “Some people came here to participate, some people didn’t.”
Since founding Beartooth in 2012, the rock band has released five studio albums, with a new album ‘Pure Ecstasy’ scheduled for release in August, with the title track and two other singles currently available for streaming.
