A woman dies in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, after a bomb she was carrying in her hand.
The 38-year-old apparently tried to place his device outside the bank early on Saturday, police reported. The explosion damaged several storefronts and vehicles.
“It appears she was carrying an explosive device and was planning to plant it in the bank’s ATM,” a senior police official told Reuters.
“Something didn’t work and exploded in her hands,” the official added. A criminal investigation is underway.
According to the Associated Press, the woman was known to police for her involvement in a past robbery. Authorities are reportedly investigating links to the left group of extremists, the agency added.
The explosion occurs less than a month after the bomb exploded outside the Hellenic train office in Athens.
Police ousted the area after two Greek media organizations received warnings that the explosive device would disappear within 35 minutes, officers said at the time. A suspicious bag was found outside the evacuated building.
