It offers both good news and optics, but ultimately a forced contract with a complicated future.
The Ukrainian mineral agreement with the US comes from months of challenging hugging and the Ukrainian idea first offered during the Biden administration’s friendly climate. Since then, it has become a permanent thorn on the part of Kiev’s enthusiastic relationship with Washington. President Volodymyr Zelensky had no choice but to sign something or risk another seismic rupture in his relationship with President Donald Trump.
However, document CNN sets the stage for long-term relationships between the US and Ukraine. That doesn’t guarantee America’s interests with iron chains in the next year of the Trump administration.
However, symbolism was mainly the point. Trump needed to feel that America was getting something back from Kiev. Ukraine was needed to demonstrate its relationship with the White House. Ukrainian allies need to do this and now become their focus to remove distractions from the complicated stories of military aid and true peace.
The transaction text also includes two phrases that are clearly pleasant to Kyiv. First, it refers to “large-scale destruction caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” And it explains how Ukraine might buy weapons from the US – important considering it escalating the Russian onslaught across the frontline.
If the United States provides new military aid to Ukraine, it states that “the capital contribution of US partners (to the fund) is considered to be increased by the valued value of such military aid.” In short, Ukraine uses this fund to pay for weapons. Until now, it was unclear whether the Trump administration would provide weapons — particularly the desperately needed patriot missile interceptors — in all. Here they explain how Ukraine pays.

It adds to the central message of this annoyed process. To sway Trump’s position in trying to mediate this peace – to shake up wider sympathy with Moscow and maintain US relations with the whole of Europe has returned to the favor of Ukraine. Trump could be clearly seen in Moscow’s progress. This continues to reject Ukraine’s proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Certain terms in the transaction of the way Ukraine pays for future weapon purchases will squeal loudly within the walls of the Kremlin.
The symbolic nature of the document is also partly due to its long-term perspective and how much political change has occurred in the decades needed to bring money to our financial resources. Neither Kiev nor Washington will have the same government for more than three more years, even if the war ends tomorrow.
The new president chooses to respect or revisit the deal. And anyone who has done business in Ukraine or has done business knows that they are masters’ degrees by “interpreting” documents and transactions that are favorable to them. The world of natural resources is already opaque there, and it is unlikely that this famous transaction will suddenly lead to business transparency. The immediate demands at the end of the war can become messy once, but that’s clear.
So it looks broad, huge, and game-changing, but at the same time its impact is not immediate, but primarily symbolic, an urgent band-aid. It’s contradictory and complicated, but for Trump it could be loud and clear.
