Savannah Guthrie shares message 6 months after mother’s disappearance
Savannah Guthrie shared a “very specific message” with her followers nearly six months after her mother disappeared.
Savannah Guthrie has released a new emotional video statement as Arizona authorities continue to search for her 84-year-old mother.
The Today host, 54, shared a “very specific message” to his followers in a video posted to Instagram on July 27, nearly six months after the disappearance of his mother, Nancy Guthrie.
“Our family is suffering. We are in a never-ending nightmare. Nothing has changed for us,” she said in the one-minute video. “We will never stop searching for her. We will always think of her and feel a hole in our hearts.”
Guthrie did not appear on Monday morning’s broadcast as he continues to film a new NBC word game show, but afterward he would speak to anyone who may have information about his mother’s whereabouts.
“I know you were trying to do things the right way. So I’m asking you to do the right thing now. Make the right choice. Please help me find her. Please tell me where to look for her,” she continued. “I truly believe it’s never too late to do the right thing. Please help us end this situation. I believe that for all of us, no matter where we’ve been and what we’ve done, there is always a way back.”
When did Nancy Guthrie disappear?
She was reported missing on Feb. 1 and has not been seen since returning home from a family game night the night before. Investigators in Arizona believe she was taken from her home against her will.
A search is currently underway, but no arrests have been made. In February, the FBI released an image of the suspect who appears to have tampered with Nancy Guthrie’s front door camera before she disappeared, but authorities have not yet identified him. The person in the image is described as a man “approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, of average build,” who was “wearing a black 25 liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.”
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a May 13 interview with People magazine that he thinks the answer is “getting close.”
The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her disappearance. The Guthrie family also offered a $1 million reward.
Has Nancy Guthrie been found?
Nancy Guthrie has never been found.
Savannah Guthrie previously spoke about the incident in a video on February 24, four weeks into the search for her mother. She said in the video that “every hour, minute, second and long night has been painful” since her mother was taken away. Guthrie said he was hopeful for a “miracle” but acknowledged his mother might not be alive.
In the days following Guthrie’s disappearance, unverified ransom notes detailing the alleged kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie were sent to KOLD News, CBS’ Tucson affiliate, and TMZ. The KOLD memo reportedly contained details about the home and the clothing Nancy Guthrie was wearing that night, but the Sheriff’s Department did not comment on its accuracy at the time, and the Sheriff’s Department demanded millions of dollars in the form of Bitcoin to free Nancy Guthrie, with varying deadlines.
NBC News, ABC News and CBS News reported in June that a memo received early in the case claimed Nancy Guthrie was dead.
In an interview with NBC in March, Savannah Guthrie said she and her family believed two of the many notes she received were “real.”
“I think there’s a lot of different notes, and I don’t think most of them are authentic,” Guthrie told Kotb in a March 26 “Today” interview segment. “However, we are inclined to believe that the two notes we received and responded to are genuine.”
The Guthrie family released several videos on social media during the investigation. The family’s first video featured a ransom note allegedly written by the kidnappers. The family said they were “ready to talk” but had no way to contact the person believed to be holding the mother. “We haven’t heard anything directly,” Savannah’s brother, Camron Guthrie, said in a Feb. 5 video. “We need to reach you and we need a way to communicate with you in order for us to move forward.”
Law enforcement is also investigating ransom notes sent to the Guthrie family and media outlets, and some of the notes may have been legitimate, the agency reported.
In a video posted on February 15, the “Today” show host told the suspect: “It’s never too late to do the right thing.”
