The son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been arrested following a shooting at Bieniemy’s home in Virginia, authorities told USA TODAY Sports.
At approximately 7:32 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, where Commander Washington’s practice facility is located. Police found an adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Chiefs manager Andy Reid said on Monday, July 27, that Bieniemy’s wife, Mia Bieniemy, 57, was in stable condition after the incident.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm for the purpose of a felony, and discharging a firearm in a dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and held without bail.
Elijah Bieniemy was arraigned Monday morning and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 31, according to online court records.
The Chiefs confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that Bieniemy is currently away from the team.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” the team said in a statement. “Out of respect for their privacy, we will not be commenting at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
According to the release, property records show Eric and Mia Bieniemy own a home in the 20000 block of North Park Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, where the shooting allegedly occurred.
Bieniemy served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, returning to the position for the 2026 season. He served as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator in 2023 and as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach in 2025.
Bieniemy spoke to USA TODAY Sports about his decision to return to the team on Saturday, July 25, during the Chiefs’ training camp.
Coach Reid told reporters after training camp practice on Monday, July 27, that he has the full support of Eric and Mia Bieniemy.
“We have reached out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Reed said, declining to provide specific details. “…Eric will get through it. He has a great support group here and will be with his family if he needs to. Time will tell from there.”
With Eric Bieniemy away from the team for the time being, Reid said Joe Breymeyer will take over offensive coordinator duties for the time being. Breimeyer has been with the Chiefs since 2016 and was promoted from offensive quality control assistant to passing game coordinator, a role he has held since 2023.
Reid added that there is no timetable for Bieniemy’s return.
